[JAWS-Users] JAWS 11 and the Itunes Store

2010-07-08 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi, everyone,

Is there a way to use JAWS effectively with the ITunes store? I specifically
want to be able to navigate the store easily and search for and download
applications for the IPhone. I'd like to be able to do this without scripts,
if possible.

Hi,

You might want to contact the Qwitter support staff about this. I'm sure
they would be able to help, especially since Qwitter is the offspring of
Jawter. You can find their contact info as well as other information and
downloads at:

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem with latest Jaws in windows live mail whenarrowing through messages with alt left arrow

2010-05-26 Thread Erin B. Edgar
I have noticed this, although it may not be specifically related to Live
Mail; it seems to happen in other programs. I've found that if I tab
around, I will eventually find a link or another field. If I hit
control+home to get back to the top and then do say all, it reads fine.
Somewhat clunky, but it works. Fortunately, this doesn't happen for me very
often.

Hello everyone, I'll try and keep this nice and simple. Basicly if you
read the subjectline it basicly says it all. Have anyone notice this
lately in the latest version of Jaws. I thought all my problems were gone
when I got the latest update of Jaws 11 this month. lol I can prove this
because when I am checking my mailing lists what I do is hit enter on the
bottom of the unread message then jaws says from then the subject then
goes on to read how many links in the email then would normally read the
text of the message. But every now and then jaws finds a message and for
some weird reason won't read the body of the message. After this I tryed
using NVDA and it red the message that jaws was unable to read. So don't
know what's going on there.

Have anyone else notice this issue with live mail?
Using latest build of jaws 11 and the windows live mail 2009 version.
Hope to hear some comments soon.
Thanks
Daniel

Re: [JAWS-Users] firefox process and the new jfw update

2010-04-21 Thread Erin B. Edgar

Hi, Chris,
I am having similar problems, and I don't know what is causing them. If you
haven't updated Firefox recently, then there might be a conflict between
JAWS and Firefox.

However, not only did JAWS 11 update last week, but so did Firefox. I'm
wondering if your issues are resulting from the latest Firefox update rather
than the JAWS update. I'm having similar problems to yours. My husband,
who is sighted and doesn't use a screenreader, is also having similar
processor issues after installing the latest Firefox update.

I've also been getting weird blue screens since installing the latest
version of FF, so I'm using Internet Explorer until I figure out whether
these are conflicts between JAWS and Firefox or just simply a buggy Firefox
update.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] firefox process and the new jfw update

Hello list,

Since updating to the new JFW release that came out last week, I've been
noticing that my Firefox browser has become quite sluggish and over all
more
cumbersome. Jaws frequently pauses for quite a bit now after the browser
is

open for a few minutes and often, I have to click on a link more than once
for it to activate. Checking out the processes in the task manager, I see
that my Firefox process gets into the 40 range after only 40 minutes
or

so and goes up to 6 and 60 soon after. Before doing the upgrade, I
wouldn't see those types of numbers only until the browser had been open
for
a long time. Now, if I want to continue using Mozilla on a prolonged
basis,

I find myself having to close and relaunch Firefox throughout the day.
Something I never really had to do except for every blue moon prior to
doing

the upgrade. IE 8 seems to be working fine with no wild increase in its
process.

I have no idea whether this new JFW 11.0.143 upgrade and my Mozilla
performance issues have anything to do with each other, but I can't think
of
anything else that has changed on my system that could be affecting it.
I've
got both antivirus and anty spyware programs (Microsoft security
essentials
and A2squared) running on my machine and everything's up to date and
clean.

Also, I'm running XP Pro 32 bit.

I know others along with myself have been reporting various problems since
upgrading JFW and was curious if my Mozilla process issue was in fact
being

experienced by others as well.

Any input or observations or perhaps even confirmation of this problem
would

be quite welcomed. Firefox is my prefered browser and I'd like to keep it
that way. I've already contacted FS support about some other update issues
but so far after a couple of e-mail back and forths, I've gotten the
standard "your inquiry has been bumped up to a research supervisor"
response. I'm not exactly holding my breath...

Thanks,
Cristobal

Hi, Leonard,
I have to second Cliff on the reasons why.

-- better performance (usage of memory, responsiveness, etc.)
-- easier navigation
-- certain areas, such as control panel, are simpler to understand
-- better security protection

Still, it comes down to personal choice.

There may be some software out there but one off the cuff way to do this
and I don't know if it would work but...

Open .pdf file using scanning software.
I think scanning software like Openbook reads PDF files better.
File is read using synthesized voice, eloquence, sappy...
You can then record the synthesized reading using a digital recorder.
You now have a audio file on your recorder that you can copy to your PC.
I know that you can go from speech to text using Dragon or similar
software but don't know if there are other ways.

Good morning everyone:

Is it possible to be able to use windows liv mail on an xp desktop
computer with jaws 11? I'm asking because over the last 5 or 6 months,
when using outlook express 6, I have noticed that when I delete a message
while the in box is open, when I open the next message to read it the
cursor doesn't track properly. Let me try and provide an example. I'll
get a message in my inbox from the list such as, there was a message from
Ward and Cathy about an xl colum question. When I deleted that message to
go on too read the next one, They'll be the message from a lady by the
name of miss Cantrall, but, I'll still see the name of Ward and cathy,
from the previous message that I had read before. I'm not sure if this is
perhaps an issue with jaws 11, or if it might have something to do with
the windows home xp operating system. If I am able to have windows liv
mail loaded on this system instead of outlook express 6 maybe this problem
will no longer exist.

In addition to what Anne has already mentioned, there is now a new option

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about Sapi 5

2010-01-24 Thread Erin B. Edgar

Hi,
You can change the speed and volume of SAPI voices in the control panel.
The specific title of the option differs depending on the version of
Windows. In Windows XP, for example, there is a category in the control
panel called "speech". In Windows 7, you can look for something in the
control panel called "text to speech", or you can simply type "speech" in
the start menu's search box. (That last also probably works with Vista.)

As for extra SAPI voices: Microsoft XP comes with horrible Microsoft Sam,
and Windows 7 and Vista come with Microsoft Anna, which isn't half bad.

On the jaws-users.com web site, you can find a package containing the
Microsoft Mike and Mary voices which will work on Windows.

Later versions of JAWS should also come shipped with versions of the
ScanSoft SAPI voices called either Realspeak Solo or Realspeak Solo Direct.
I'm not sure which version of JAWS started shipping these voices. I do know
that my version of JAWS 9 shipped with the Solo voices, and version 10
started shipping with the Solo Direct voices. (The direct voices are thought
to be more responsive.)

Also, if you received the JAWS 11 DVD install disk, you will be presented
with three buttons when you insert it: one will allow you to install JAWS,
another will allow you to install Magic, and the third will allow you to
install the Realspeak Solo direct voice packages for English and Spanish.

Hello Folks,
sometimes there are pull down lists (whatever they are called by an
english version of jaws) (oh wait hang on for a sec...)

They are called combo box!
These combo boxes change the content of the web site just by moving the
focus up and down. Once they cursor has changed once the web site
changes and this makes it impossible to view the available choices. I
think these combo boxes lack a submit button and are javascript based.
Is there a work arround that makes it possible to view the available
choices and pick one later on.

An example is found here:

Just press f for form fields twice.

To answer your first question about headings, you can get to the various
headings on the web site by either pressing h, pressing numbers for heading
levels, or, depending on your screenreader, there may be a keystroke to pull
up a list of headings.

Regarding making changes on the mobile site: To make changes to your
profile and guarantee that they stick, it is still a good idea to use the
full site. I've never had a problem with deleting messages from the mobile
site only to have them show up on the full site, so I'm not sure about that.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Erin

Hi Erin,
Good info on tutorial. I am Unsure how you navigated from heading to
heading, I'll assume you typed the letter h? Yes?
I only listened to part 1. I'll listen to part 2 at a later time today or
tomorrow.
Maybe my questions will be answered by reading the application part on
Facebook or in part 2.
Anyway, I had a photo on profile which I have no idea how it got there.
My friend sent me a photo in Facebook and suggested that I use it on my
profile. I ignored this message and photo.
A few days later, I did post a message to my wall and a friend sent a
message to ask me who was other person in my profile photo.
When I was on the mobile site I deleted this photo; Facebook confirmed
deletion.
However, it still showed on the Facebook site. So my question is that if
you want to change anything on profile do I need to be on Facebook and not
the mobile site for changes to occur?
I also noticed that when on mobile facebook site, when I delete messages
either sent privately or on wall that messages are deleted from mobile
facebook but still appear on Facebook.

So do all changes need to done on Facebook site?
Thanks,
Ann

I have finally gotten around to installing it to my Windows 7
machine,thanks

to Donald pointing me in the right direction.
Apparently, it seems that there are 2 versions so-to-speak.
One is, web-based, and the other is a client installed on the computer.
The web-based requires you to sign in to your Microsoft "Live" account,
and

looks to me like Microsoft does store your contact info on their server.
When I accessed the Live account yesterday, I chose to import my contacts,
and what popped up were the contacts that I previously
had in Windows Messenger, which is not even on this machine.
The client does have a similar look to Outlook Express.
If I seemed to discount anyone's posts on this subject, I apologize for
that, it was not my intent.
This is a list for learning, as well as helping each other,
and I certainly learned something today.

If you are referring to the digital talking books such as those found on

2009-10-21 Thread Erin B. Edgar

Hilbert,

The short answer is no. If it is coming out on DVD and you only have a
CDRW drive, then your computer isn't capable of reading DVD's. I would
call sales about this and ask if there is a way you can get the software
on CD. If they say there isn't a way to do that, then you could copy
the downloaded version to a CD. I hope they will be able to make
accommodation for you. My guess is that there will be many people
calling with the same complaint.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Authorization Number

2009-10-20 Thread Erin B. Edgar

Hi,
I'm getting the same messages as well. Your authorization number for
Jaws 9 should be on your software CD packaging. If you're trying to
activate over the internet, you might not have authorization to upgrade
to 11 until they charge your credit card, or otherwise make record that
you upgraded. As I recall from my last upgrade from Jaws 6 to Jaws 9,
it took about a day to obtain my new authorization. If you go to
fsactivate.com you will get further instructions on what to do, as well
as the number of licensing codes you have available and for what version
they'll work. If you aren't authorized for version 11 in a couple of
days, I would call the sales department.

Hi,
No, the games and other third-party applications are not available on
the mobile site. They are also not available on the Facebook Lite site,
although you can access your groups and events.

The mobile site:

http://m.facebook.com

was developed for use with mobile devices, although some people with
screenreaders prefer it to the regular site, which is cluttered with
various advertisements, graphics, and flotsam that screenreaders might
have trouble with.

In case people don't know, FB Lite came out in August and is only in
the developing stages. People in the US who already have Facebook
accounts can preview it by going to:

http://lite.facebook.com

It is not quite as stripped down as the mobile site, but it is optimized
for users on slower or intermittent internet connections. Facebook Lite
offers fewer services, excludes most third-party

applications and requires less bandwidth.

I personally have no problem using JAWS in conjunction with the main
Facebook site. If anyone would like help with this, I created a
two-part tutorial for Main Menu. If anyone would like a copy, please
e-mail me privately.

Hi, there,
If you want to create individual podcasts, you can upload them to Blind
Cool Tech.

http://blindcooltech.com

You can upload to that site easily, and the podcasts should be posted to
the feed relatively quickly, depending upon how busy the feed
maintainer is.

If you want to create a podcast feed and are looking for an accessible
site to upload and a way to maintain your feed, that is a whole other
kettle of fish and can be quite an involved process.

However, for individual podcasts, blind Cool Tech is probably the
easiest and most worry-free method that I am aware of.

Hi all,

One has to be a bit generous with beta software, of course: it's
intended to
be tested and was never meant to be perfect. However, JAWS betas in
general
seem to be quite polished already. At least in my case, this has
totally

changed with this beta of JAWS 11.

Incredible focus problems make browsing the web, installing

give up

were unloaded. This means, for example, that silencing speech,
requesting
to hear the current line, and so forth, would not work. This has
absolutely
never happened to me with any other versions of JAWS. Personalized
settings

aren't properly erased, even when you purge the contents of your JAWS
settings folder.

And when you get right down to it: Research It is a stripped down
version of
the Windows sidebar; currently, in fact, it can only search through
sources
such as Wikipedia and Wictionary, which are absolutely never accepted
in an
academic context anyway. Word Index is "cool", but it's not a screen
reader
feature and there are widely available freeware packages that do
exactly the
same thing. The Gmail support has stopped working entirely. And
while
there are a few enhancements under the hood, they're not the
incredible
screen reading breakthroughs that were rolled out in versions such as
3.31
(the virtual cursor), 4.5 (quick navigation keys), 5.0 (place markers)
or

9.0 (a new Word engine and better access to rich edit controls on web
pages). I am incredibly faithful to JAWS and love it immensely, but
after a

year's development, frankly, I expected a little better.

Let's definitely not rant: I'm looking for constructive comments by
others.
Has JAWS 11 been performing up to JAWS' usual standard? (If not, be
sure to
report everything to the FS test department.) Do you see yourselves
using
the new features found in JAWS 11? Am I alone in having mixed
emotions over

this beta?

cheers,

Grant

Hi,
Have you tried routing your JAWS cursor to the PC cursor while in the
error message, thus reading the message with the JAWS cursor?
Sometimes, that can be a little more helpful.

Once I enter my username and am transferred to the page where I need

This behavior continues throughout the entire site from then on.

I would like to inform the developers of this problem and suggest a

Hi, Kerry,
I have not used it much, but it is loaded with hotkeys, although they
aren't generally visible. I think there is a list in the help files.
If you can't find them there, I have a list around here somewhere; it
contains many many hotkeys. I'm not sure where it is, however. If I
find it, I will send it along. If, in the meantime, you want to use it
to simply play a file, the space bar works well to play/pause.

Hello, everyone-
I am wondering if anyone is using Facebook successfully with Jaws. I
tried to set up an account but had difficulty with the audio security
code you have to use (since copying the code seen in the window is not
an option). My husband is sighted and said he could help me set it
up, but I'm wondering if it will work with Jaws or just something that
will be frustrating for me. I am currently using Jaws 7.

Thanks in advance for your input,
Erin

[JAWS-Users] Weird Outlook Express problem

2009-03-09 Thread Erin B. Edgar

Hi, all,

For some reason, when I type a message into Outlook Express which has
multiple paragraphs, using the control key in conjunction with the up
and down arrows will not read the previous and next paragraphs. It just
jumps me to either the top or bottom of the message. Curiously, this
is only happening in Outlook Express. I looked in the keyboard manager,
and it indicates that control-up-arrow and control-down-arrow are
supposed to say the previous and next paragraphs, but they don't.

I did not notice this problem until a few days ago when I installed JAWS
Script Exchange. I'm wondering if that would have modified my Outlook
Express script files? It is the only thing I can think of. If anyone
has any suggestions on how to fix this problem, please let me know.

BTW: I am using JAWS 9.0, Windows XP, and Outlook Express 2003.

Thanks,
Erin

Re: [JAWS-Users] podcasting programs and jaws

2009-01-29 Thread Erin B. Edgar

Hi, Andrew.

I am not sure if you are looking for programs to create podcasts or to
receive them.

For creating podcasts, I have used both Audacity and GoldWave with JAWS
with good results. For the most part, all or most functions can be
accessed either through menus or hotkeys.

For receiving podcasts, I prefer to use Juice (or I-podder, as it was
first called) to receive my podcasts. There is also the accessible
podcatcher.

I am not sure of the links to all of these programs, but these, along
with other alternatives, can be found on the JAWS users list programs
page at

Re: [JAWS-Users] extracting audio from a dvd to mp3

Hi,
GoldWave does have a merge option whereby you can merge several audio files
into one. I use it a lot when I'm creating podcasts or if I've accidentally
extracted audio from DVD's in multiple chapters. As I don't have time to
start the program, I'm not sure where the option is right now.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Baloons in win xp

2008-08-12 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi, Christy,
Reading help balloons in JAWS 9 sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I
know that isn't really much of an answer, but it just doesn't work perfectly
yet.

Hi, Christy,
I think you're referring to the Downloads manager, which is in the tools
menu. Alternatively, you can access it via the hot key, which is control+j.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox 3.0 Scripts

2008-07-14 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi, Derek,
I have no idea. I've never used scripts with Firefox and never seen the
need for them, so I'm not really sure what they do. I guess Donald is using
JAWS 8. I never used that so I'm not sure how compatible it was with
Firefox.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Announce Caps

2008-07-13 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi, Donald,
I'm sort of ashamed to say that I don't know for sure. I got JAWS 9 only a
few months ago and am still getting used to it. :) So here's the answer of
a slow learner.

Press insert+f2 to get to the list of JAWS managers.
Go into either the first or second one, , which is adjust JAWS options.
This will take you into a treeview.
Arrow down until you get to "editing options" which is on the first level of
the treeview.
Press right arrow to open this. You will come to a list of options and one
should be "caps indicate". I believe you press the spacebar to toggle the
option from character to word etc.

Hth,
Erin

Re: [JAWS-Users] FireFox

2008-07-12 Thread Erin B. Edgar
hi, there,
If you go into the JAWS main help system, there is a book entitled "Using
the Internet with JAWS". It talks mostly about IE, but the keystrokes for
Firefox are almost the same, with a few minor exceptions. As has already
been pointed out, if you have Firefox 3 you cannot access JAWS help on the
fly while in the browser.

Hi, Donald,
Oh, interesting. I have the same problem. I didn't notice it until you
pointed it out, as I generally don't access JAWS help on the fly. However,
if you know the IE keystrokes, Firefox is pretty similar. :)

[JAWS-Users] VLC Media Player

2008-07-04 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi, all,
I'm trying to use this player, and it looks excellent. However, I cannot find
a list of hot keys. I go into the preferences menu and try to pull up the
dialog that I think reassigns hot keys, but it looks very unwieldy and clunky.
If I use my JAWS cursor to navigate around in it, seems very slow and complex.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS & Fire Fox

2008-07-04 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi,
I'll admit that Firefox isn't good for everything. For example I find that
it works with my blogging software (WordPress) but that IE is easier to use
for editing my blog. I haven't had a problem with form fields in Firefox
but have noticed that it tends to crash more than IE. Still, I like the
speed and more efficient use of memory enough to use it most of the time.

Re: [JAWS-Users] FireFox

2008-07-03 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi, Larry,
I have found Firefox a lot less memory-heavy than IE., especially the later
versions like IE 7. In other words, Firefox seems to require a lot fewer
system resources in order to run at a fairly fast speed. There are also some
add-ins, such as Add Blocker and an accessibility plug-in, for Firefox that
make it more blind-friendly. There is a JAWS help section on Firefox, and
in general, the accessibility commands JAWS uses for IE work in Firefox. I
found the change-over very smooth and almost seamless. I changed to Firefox
when I updated to IE 7, and so I'm still not used to tabbed browsing in
either program. :)

It all comes down to personal preference, however.

Hth,
Erin

Re: [JAWS-Users] Accelerating Audio CDs

2008-06-16 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi, David,
Funny thing. The version of Windows media Player I have does this just
fine. I use Version 11 with Windows XP. The hot key for this is
control+shift+g. It takes it up about half again as fast, so it is not
incomprehensible. To get it back to normal speed, it is control+shift+n.
Alternatively, if you have this, programs such as Kurzweil 1000 can play
audio files such as mp3 files. I'm not sure about audio CD's.

Hi,
In my case, I find that things like this happen to me when I've had the
computer on for awhile. computers can often benefit from a reboot,
especially if they've been on for days at a time. So for me, that is
usually my solution. Other people might have different experiences and

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws & voices

2008-05-30 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi,
That would all depend.

Basically, you would probably want to find the .exe file associated with
these voices. It would probably be called something like setup.exe. It
should bring up an install shield that will guide you through the setup
process. Without knowing anything else about the voices you have, that's
all I can tell you.

Re: [JAWS-Users] loading indication

2008-05-30 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi,
Pressing JAWS key+F2 will take you into the list of JAWS managers. Arrow
down and press enter on "Adjust JAWS Options".
This will take you into a tree view. Open the group of options called
"general options" with right arrow.
Arrow down until you hear something about progress bars. It will probably
say something like "Progress bars - spoken."
Press space bar until you hear it say "silent".
Tab until you hear "execute button" and activate it with space bar or enter.

That should fix the problem.

Are there any programs that are JAWS-friendly that can help one access/search

Re: [JAWS-Users] Should I upgrade to a newer version of winamp?

2008-05-07 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Well, regarding Winamp and most other media aps, I subscribe to the saying
listed below. With Winamp, I found that version 2.78 was very accessible
with JAWS when I started using Winamp as my default player several years
ago. The version does what I want it to, since I only want the bare
minimum of features, so that's what I use even though the program is miles
of versions ahead of that. I find the interfaces of the higher versions of
Windows Media Player very cluttered as well.

Re: [JAWS-Users] reasignning the JAWS key

2008-04-22 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi, Bill,
1. Go into the Configuration Manager.
2. Press control+alt+D to open the Default configuration file.
3. Go into the "set options" menu by pressing alt+S.
 4. Arrow down until you find "keyboard options" and press enter.
5. This will open a dialog box. In there you should find an option which
allows you to change which key is used as the JAWS key on a laptop. the
options are caps lock, scroll lock, and Insert, I think. (This option will
only be available if you already have your keyboard set to the laptop
layout.)
6. Save the configuration file when finished.

Hth,
Erin

Re: [JAWS-Users] any twitter users on the list?

2008-04-19 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi, Terry,
Twitter is basically a free service which allows you to post messages of
140 words or less for other people to read. It's something to use when you
want to give people an idea of what you are doing or thinking on the spur of
the moment, so to speak. You can find out more by actually going to the
site and reading the FAQ.
I don't use it that often because I don't think my life is that interesting
:) but I have found no problems between Twitter and JAWS 9

I don't know. I never had this problem until recently when I had a new
mother board installed in my computer, re-formatted it completely, and
re-installed everything from scratch. It's sort of weird, but I got used to
it.

Re: [JAWS-Users] realspeak

2008-03-28 Thread Erin B. Edgar
I think it came with both 8 and 9. I know that I received it with 9.
Unload JAWS, install the voices (it is a guided install I think) and then
restart JAWS.

Yes, they should be there.
The path to the folder in which to paste your favorites will go something
like this:
c:\documents and settings\[account name]\favorites

Re: [JAWS-Users] Moving folders

2008-03-26 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi, Patty,
Try this:
>From within "My computer" go into your C drive.
Then go into the "documents and settings" folder.
There will be a list of sub-folders which will be named according to the
names of the accounts on your computer.
Go into the appropriate sub-folder (I don't know what it will be called but
it will be the one in which most of your settings are stored. Probably "all
users" or "default user" will work.)
There will be a "favorites" folder under that.
Go to the folder on your hard drive where your favorites are currently
stored.
Select them all with control-A and copy them to the clipboard with
control-C.
Then paste them into the favorites folder which you first opened in your
account settings.

Hope that helps and makes sense.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Laptop and num pad

2008-03-19 Thread Erin B. Edgar
JAWS has a layout specifically designed for laptop keyboards. If you don't
like it, you can buy a relatively inexpensive external num pad that will
plug into one of the USB ports on your laptop. You can look in the JAWS
help system for more information on the laptop layout.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 9 sluggish unlike 7

2008-03-13 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Chris,
I asked a friend about possible programs which may "hog" memory, and these
were the suggestions I got.

In IE7, turn off phishing (ph-ishing). This will free up the system a bit
when in IE. Also, if running Spybot on the computer, disable TeaTimer.

To find out computer hogs, look in task manager under Resources and it helps
if you can sort the CPU column. This column sorts the programs by how much
of the CPU's processing power they use.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 9 sluggish unlike 7

2008-03-13 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi, Chris,
If you notice the most sluggishness when trying to enter links on a web page
in IE 7, you may have the fishing option enabled in the "security settings"
dialog. I'll have to ask around, but that is the first thing I can think of
that might make IE slow. Before going back to JAWS 7, you could try (aside
from turning that security setting off) using Firefox or downgrading to IE6.
I've been using Firefox ever since I accidentally upgraded to IE 7 and find
it much faster and lighter. I downgraded to 6 when I reformatted recently,
since I still use IE for some things; it is also faster than 7.
There may also be some other settings in 7 that you can tweak to make it
faster; I'll have to ask those more knowledgeable than I.
Just my thoughts.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Caps lock key, JAWS doesn't read out

2008-03-12 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi Estelita,
Thanks for the compliment. Actually, I noticed the problem myself
after I switched to laptop layout for the first time. I had to dig around
in the help files for awhile before I found the answer; if I had asked like
you did, I probably would have saved time.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 9 sluggish unlike 7

2008-03-12 Thread Erin B. Edgar
I find JAWS 9 very responsive. In fact, I think I remember folks from FS
saying that they had worked consciously to improve the response time in this
version. Maybe memory-hogging programs are running in the background on
your computer.?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Caps lock key, JAWS doesn't read out

2008-03-12 Thread Erin B. Edgar
If you set your keyboard layout to classic laptop, the caps loc key is your
JAWS key. Thus, if you press it once, JAWS will think that you just pressed
the JAWS key and won't say anything. In order to turn the caps lock on, you
need to press the key twice quickly. Them you will be in caps lock mode
until you press it twice quickly to turn it off.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Relating to microsoft word

2008-03-07 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi,
You probably have "use SAPI 5 during say-all" checked in the Configuration
manager. To change these settings, the following:

1. Go into Microsoft Word.
2. Run JAWS configuration Manager by pressing F-2 and hitting "enter" on
the Configuration Manager option.
3. It should pull up the MSWord.jcf configuration file automatically.
4. Hit alt-s, which will take you into the "set options" menu.
5. You will be in a list of choices. Hit "enter" on the "say all options"
dialog.
6. It should pull up another dialog which has options for configuring your
SAPI 5 say-all voice.the first option is "use SAPI 5 during Say-all". It
will probably be checked. If you don't want to use SAPI 5 but just want to
use Eloquence, uncheck this box and hit OK.
7. If you want to use SAPI 5 but a different voice, do the following:
a. The voice will probably be set on "Microsoft Sam" (the default Narrator
voice).
b. If you want another voice, select another in the list.
C. The next tab adjusts the speech rate. Change that to whatever you wish.
D Press "enter" on OK.
8. Then save the file with alt-s and exit configuration manager.

Hth,
Erin

[JAWS-Users] Experience with Microsoft Office 2007

2008-03-03 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi, all,
I am thinking seriously of selling my computer and buying another one. I
currently have Office 2003 and am wondering what people's experiences have
been with JAWS and Office 2007 since, if I get a new computer, it will most
likely come with it. Specifically, I am interested in how easy it is to work
with the new ribbon system.
Thanks,
Erin

I'm so glad it worked; I hadn't actually tried it yet, although I set the

Re: [JAWS-Users] gold wave settings

2008-02-25 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi, David,
I think people were referring to the fact that Goldwave can sometimes crash
JAWS 9.0. Someone on this list suggested setting all of the controls in the
visual tab under the Control Properties window (F11)to blank except for the
frame rate.
Hope that helps.

Hi, all,
Does anyone know of an IRC client that works well with the latest version of
JAWS? I can't seem to find one on the Programs page for this list. I seem to
remember this issue being addressed on the list previously, so forgive me for

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS on thumb drives

2008-02-14 Thread Erin B. Edgar
I think there would be a problem, though, with the host computer. Because
the hotel's computer won't have this JAWS video intercept driver on it, JAWS
won't work properly and won't speak at all when you try to run it from the
thumb drive.
Hope that I understood your question correctly.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS on thumb drives

2008-02-14 Thread Erin B. Edgar
People can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the video intercept
driver on the host computer is not activated unless JAWS starts running from
the thumb drive. So I think the video driver will just sit there and not
bother anyone while JAWS isn't around. That's the impression I got anyway
from reading the documentation on the FS web site.

Using JAWS on a thumb drive is done primarily when you are going to be using
a computer that you don't want to load the actual program onto--say a
computer at a temporary place of employment or someone else's PC that you're
only planning to use for a short period of time.

Hi, all,
I just got a 4 gig thumb drive and want to run JAWS from it. Apparently, I

[JAWS-Users] Goldwave Scripts trianing mode

2008-02-12 Thread Erin B. Edgar
Hi,
I know this has been mentioned before, so I'm sorry for asking again.

I have the latest version of the Goldwave scripts which comes with a training
mode. Although this is nice, it can become somewhat verbose. I try to turn it
off with the keystroke Jaws key+grave, but that doesn't work. Is there an
alternative?
Thanks, and sorry for asking again.
