Could you select songs with WMP 11 and Vista? For instance, you only want tracks 1, 3, and what ever other tracks maybe interesting. You can with WMP 12 uncheck all the tracks you don't want. But as far as I could see, going back even to XP, you had no choice but to rip the whole CD like it or not. There fore I never bothered with it. Eric, what about Dell's touch pad that they offer if you don't want to pay $300 for a touch monitor? You can also use it with a lap top too. It's $60 and if I do recall correctly, it is 10 point touch. It's one of the extra things you can get with your brand new PC as you build it. Which I do plan to get a new PC. I just ask since what I want to get is a desk top and if I can save some money. Especially since I already have a Samsung TV/monitor combo. Also, what about the so called all in ones? I'm using Ava right now. She'f quite expressive no pun entended but not as much as I expected. I'm no longer using Elequence. I'm just using Ava. It's so disappointing they got rid of Jenn though. I loved Jenn. She was a very good reading voice. But then again, I may have just gotten too use to her from listening to the PTR1 and PTR2 manuals over, over, over, over, over, over, over, over and over and over again. Front to back too. Jill was okay too. Sam sounds annoyed kind of, and she's also too cliché for my taste. The Apple stuff has her, The first Victor Streem had her, and on it goes. Enough already with Sam! I really wish they'd bring Jenn back I wouldn't mind her all over the place. Smile. Also, why don't they ever use hot chicks for these voices? It's always women in there 40s or something. Overall though, for JAWS, I still prefer plain old Eloquence. I have used it for 15 years or so, ever sense they started packaging it with JAWS, and I have just gotten so use to it that it seems a little strange using anything else. The Eloquence voice itself sounds very robotic but I think that it does a better job at very high speeds and the pronunciation is a little better than many of these more natural sounding voices. I am using Ava myself and am very happy with the response on my Windows 7 64 bit running both jaws and magic with 6 gigs of ram. I am not up on all the additional voices for other countries but I am impressed with all the vocalizer expressive voices out there for everyone already. I am also very happy with the first public beta so far. It's playing very well with Magic 12 and comes in handy on all these overcrowded web sites today. blind5sparrow For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Ah, good point. That reminds me then, how about Liz Phair. Let's hear some hot chick for once. I have used Ava a little and I don't think that I have ever heard a happier sounding synthetic voice, unlike Samantha, who always sounds a little mad. I wish that Ava was available for my iPhone. Bigger is not always better. Remember, if you get a 4TB drive as compared to a 1TB drive, the magnetic plates are thinner, so the failure rate is going to be marginally higher. So, balance your storage needs versus longevity. Also, solidstate drives won't tolerate as many write/rewrites, so they are better as a place where you load your operating system and programs, i.e. things that you won't move and rewrite as much. SSD's do fail, and typically, when they do it is pretty sudden and likely data is lost. That 12TB drive you mentioned had multiple RAID backups to protect it from failing, but then for $240,000 bucks I'd hope it would. Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws-compatible Terabites
You're welcome. I just wanted to correct 1 thing. It's 2 thousand gigs if you get a 2 terabite drive like me. The one your uncle is talking about only has 1000 gigabites. There are 3 and 4 TB drives too. Now you meantion flash drives though, that reminds me of one I'd really love to have. It was shown at CES. It's a PCIE one which means you stick it in the back of your pc like a sound card, and it's what's called an SSD or Solid State drive. It literally is like a flash or thumb drive. This one has 12 terabites.tThat means 12 thousand gigabites I think. So, how do you like that? I for one love it and cant weight until it comes out. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Nicole Valicia Thompson-Andrews Sent: Wednesday, May 01, 2013 12:34 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws-compatible Terabites Thanks. Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW and Windows Surface Pro
I haven't used it, but I should think so. It is Win 8 pro you are using on it. Think of it this way. It's a actual computer in a tablit. So, if ypu've used a PC with Win 8, then you know how it would work. Note get the type cover. This is the one that has a keyboard with actuall keys on it. The touch one has key shapes on it. I've heard the JAWS 15 roomer too. We'll have to weight and see. But from what I understand from the access talk podcast, this is what people were posting was being shown at CSUN. They weren't sure since none of them went to the presentation, but that's what they raid. We'll see though. I've heard it is true from some friends but the thing is that it's kind of hard for them to figure out since they can't buy some of the touch tech they needed from Apple. Selfish apple, some one should get the whip. But any ways, yeah I guesss it's kind of true, but we'll just have to see how well it works since Apple won't share. They have to figure it out from scratch because of their selfishness. I mean, come on man, we're talking about helping blind people here. Some one has to get the whip like I said before. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Bubba Sent: Sunday, March 31, 2013 6:29 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] JFW and Windows Surface Pro Hi, I was interested in if anyone had heard or used the windows surface pro with JFW? Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2013 with JAWS
Yeah I know. Yeah Win 8 aint that different but for the few things that are. The start screen is the really big thing, but other than that, it's almost like Win 7. Like I said, I had just thought you had checked it out on win 8 is all. That's fine if you didn't after all, for what we do with it there shouldn't be too much of a difference with it on Win 7 or 8 I gather. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Kliphton Sent: Monday, February 18, 2013 11:26 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2013 with JAWS Right, and since the touch screen stuff doesn't interest me, I have no desire to install windows 8. Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2013 with JAWS
I guess the signature thing could be major if you are a bit skeptic, the E-mail account not being listed could really be major, and the spell check thing really is major. The sky drive thing, well if you're going to usit, then it really is major too. I guess one could get away with Office 2013. At least I could but for the spell check. I mean, I don't have a lot of E-mail accounts, I don't really use signitures all that much, and as for sky drive, I'm kind of skeptical about all that cloud stuff. I mean if the internet goes down, so does the access your stuff. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Kliphton A M Sent: Monday, February 18, 2013 12:17 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2013 with JAWS I was the one who said he was using jaws 14 and office 2013. When I first started using it, it was very clunky, somethings just wouldn't load, and sometimes you had to reboot for better results. Now that jaws 14 has an update, most things work. The main thing that doesn't work is when you go to type a signature, it doesn't read you the text, but it is there. When you try to switch between accounts it won't tell you witch account is highlighted. Spell check does the same thing, it will tell you there is a miss spelled word, but not read you the suggestions. Your suppose to be able to sign in to your sky drive account, and have your word documents saved there, but mine always tells me to look because there were arrows discovered. That's all I have found so far. FS knows, so we will see if they address it in the next update. As for activating office, now you go through an automated system, that walks you through and asks questions about how many pc's you have activated there product on, say 1, and it will give you a knew one. I have a copy of 2010 if any one wants to buy it. It is office home and business edition. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 14 with Windows 8
I'd say go ahead and go for windows 8. It works just fine for me. It's not hard to use it's just people don't like to work hard. I'm like that to some times to be honest. So I'm not really bashingthem. See what is hard wal what was kind of for me was that things aren;'t all where you know them to be. Some things work differently too. So yeah, it's not all that bad. The start screen, it's like a table. So, yeah. It's your choice in the end, but I would go for it if it were me. You're very wize to ask how it works. I applaud you. One shouldn't just fall for the it's hard to use with a screen reader thing so easily. One should ask Oh is it r4eally? Then you will see for your self. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 14 with Windows 8
Cool man. Like I said. It's your choice in the end, and yeah, I guess if there are things that don't work then yeah that is something to be carefull of. Like Open Book for instance. Come to think of it, Magic is another example. It don't work. I guess that the lay out thing didn't really bother me as much as it did others. That's fine I guess. I guess my main theme should have been try it out for your self and see what you think. Take a win 8 PC out for a spin in other words. But I guess you said you'll stick with Win 7 though. That's fine. I was just saying it's fine, win 8 is fine that is, and it was good of you to ask. It would have been even cooler if you could try it out which I don't know if you have. Paull Thurott guesses that Win 9 will be more metro like then Win 8 already is. But who knows. We'll just have to weight and see. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Steve Sent: Wednesday, February 13, 2013 1:51 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 14 with Windows 8 Certainly, Win 8 is useable by Jaws 14 etc. I guess I'm an old fuddy-duddy, comments like what is below don't seem to be very helpful. Here are some considerations to bear in mind: 1. Win 8 layout is completely different from earlier versions. I do AT training, and there are several people who have upgraded to Win 8 and subsequently had their systems rolled back to Win 7. Yes, there are workarounds like classic shell etc. but the Win 8 experience is if not quite radically different, it is certainly a lot more unique that previous upgrades. Second, you may not have support for some of your programs in Win 8, I don't know if Openbook has released a patch to work in Win 8 yet, for example. If you are getting a new computer, then there are some nice advantages with Win 8 including Safeboot. But, since there are so many sighted users unhappy with Win 8, for my money, I'm sticking with Win 7 which will be supported for another seven years, and I'll await a more user-friendly Windows 9 which will probably be out sooner than later. I think Win 8 is Microsoft's latest equivalent of Windows ME and Vista, as Herman and His Hermits would say A Must to Avoid! Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. I must say it is quite easy to configure but so far not noticing a major jump in performance yet. That maybe because this system does function fairly well on it's own but like I said it is still early in my research. On the other hand there is no decrease which I wouldn't expect. In reading the documentation I took note of the line that said something to the effect that you should have at least twice the available storage on the card as the system onboard memory which at the moment is not the case. This system has 3 GB of memory and the SD card I am testing with is a 2 GB. Now I do have an 8 GB as well as a couple of 4 GB cards but for now they are all being used for other purposes. I am curious as to what experience any of you out there who have tried this feature have had and would be willing to share. The way the instructions are written I take them to say if my system has 4 GB of memory then the card or flash drive should be an 8 GB device, on the other hand I suppose it could be argued that the directions mean simply that the card in this case simply double the amount of memory in the system. In other words for example for this system I would need to utilize 3 GB of a 4 GB card for best results. Feedback on this subject would be welcome as improving system performance will benefit us all. I'd get it with the GForce only because you may want or even need it later, and since we're talking about a laptop, either you do it now or you'll be stuck with out it. I don't know, but I've been told you can't add it later and if this is true, I'd take the chance if I were you. As for Win 8, well you have your reasons, but again, I'd go with it. I'm using the latest build of JAWS 14, and I'm finding it very difficult to do some things I've grown accustome to doing quite easily in previous versions of Windows. Not sure if this is due to the limitations of JAWS 14 or my lack of knowledge on navigating Windows 8, but I'm willing to learn. Just don't understand why Henter-Joyce hasn't posted some sort of audio tutorials on this subject yet. Are there any mailing list out there I can subscribe to for learning how to use JAWS with Windows 8? I know the list moderator doesn't like people posting off-topic things here, so please send this info to me privately for I don't want to get band for starting an off-topic thread here. Now, I haven't done anything with a separage graphics card, but I'm sure the normal lower-end ones will work well. I suspect some of the high-end gamer ones will, but if there was going to be a problem, I'd suspect that you might see it in one of those high-end cards. Plus, many folks on this list appear to be professionals, so may have some unique input on this question. Does anyone use a headset that can both receive input from the computer, and from the telephone? IE, so you can hear your screen reader and talk on the phone. I used a rig like this many years ago, but haven't in a long time. That rig had the synth in one ear, and the phone in the other ear. Personally, I would prefer to have the synth and phone in both ears. Especially if I were using the headset all day for screen reading, and only occasionally using the phone. Barring that, does anyone have any experience with wireless headsets for use with the computer output. I am tired of getting tangled up in my headphone cord. I've been reading about many of them, but it is difficult to know how a set of headphones will feel after 8 or 9 hours on your head. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- Blue skies. Well, I guess it would be exactly what you said. It's fast. Pluss, I'm a geek so I guess I also love the fact it's simpally new. It's all cool. The only thing that probabally isn't so cool is that Windows Media Center has to be added on. I did but I just don't get why MS is wining about not enough people using WMC when it's parcially their own falt for not marketing it the right way. Pall Thurrot said once that HP's M495C ruined it too since it was a tower and not one of those dvd player looking HT PCs'. Maybe so, but who knows. It's just too bad they gave up on it. If you can talk to who ever is sending you these files, if I were you, I'd ask them if they'd be so kind as to save them as DOC files Vs DOCX files. I was able to put XP Widows7 32 Bit on the same computer using just 1 harddrive but, when we tried to do the same with XP Widows7 64 Bit, we had to use a second harddrive. Essentially what i have with the XP the Widows7 64 Bit desktop is 2 500 gigibite drives with XP Pro on 1 drive Widows7 Pro 64 Bit on the other drive. What had to install a third party boot manager, I think that's what it's called, to handle the dual boot system. We assigned XP Pro to be the default operating system so, the computer boots into the XP Pro OS on startup or reboot. If I want Widows7 64 bit to fire up, after starting or rebooting the computer, my desktop makes a beep sound, then I wait 20 seconds, arrow down 1 time, press enter. Now, this is where the fun begins, Widows7 firesup! Joy, Joy, more Joy! I don't know how someone would do this with a laptop, being I've never heard a laptop make that beep sound like a desktop computer when Windows is starting, at least I think the beep represents that Windows start up screen?! I know someone can sure as hell explain this beep sound a lot more professionally that I am doing. On the desktop computer running XP Home Widows7 32 Bit the boot-up process works the same as the 64 Bit computer except that, we didn't have to use a third party boot manager. Larry, if you have any more in depth questions, contact me off list I'll hook you up with the geek, whoops I mean computer technician, that configured my computers. Hope this helped. Take care. Only on a 64bit op with 4gig or better ram. Would I say it might not matter with on board graphics. But with prices now it really ain't that much. You don't get into real money cards until you run dual video cards. At 05:23 PM 2/16/2012, you wrote: Tim, Respectfully, I think funds are better spent in other areas. I have done computer tech work for years, run Jaws on lots of different configurations, and except for certain video conflicts back several years ago, I really don't see any performance differences with high-end video cards vs. shared video on the motherboard, as long as there is enough system memory to share. I guess the only way I'd change my opinion is to see a comparison of the same OS where a high-end video card could do certain things that couldn't be done with shared graphics, all other things being equal. So, I don't really see the point of spending an extra $150 on a high-end video card just for Jaws. The processing and front-side bus speed should be fast, and get as much memory as you can, 4GB preferrably 8GB although you really don't need more than that. If you go above 4GB, you will by definition be getting a 64-bit system. Frankly, I would opt for a desktop because of the additional ports and possibility to expand it easier.
