Re: [JAWS-Users] PDF why some work and some don't?
This is because the ones that say blank are only images and have not been formatted correctly by the pdf creator, thus you have to use OpenBook, Kurzweil or another OCR program (Abbyy FineReader) to perform OCR (optical character recognition). Hi all, Sometimes I can press application key on PDF and I enter on open with Adobe x and the file reads fine. Other times it states empty document or something like that. So my question is Is there a formatting issue that could be implemented on PDF file so that when one opens it the PDF reads fine with Adobe4x reader? I am on a web site and there is a PDF. When I open it states empty doc. I download it, scan with OpenBook and doc is mostly readable. I would love to instruct this web master to get PDF in accessible format but haven't a clue what to say. Hi All, I am running windows 7 on this computer with outlook 2007, and jaws 12 on a 64 bit machine. I have several folders in outlook, and I have them off of my In Box. When I want to read a message in one of these folders, the message won't read when I enter the folder. It will read, if I tab over to, it, but it doesn't land on the message when I open the folder. If I hit control Y and go to that folder, it will open and read the messages. The Reading pain is set to off. So, I have my In Box, and then, all the folders I have created after that, and if I go directly to one of those folders without hitting control Y first, the messages will not read when I hit enter on that folder. They only read if I hit control Y first. Why can't I just go to a folder, hit enter, and see the list of messages? Re: [JAWS-Users] a slick method for installing applications
Hi On the http://ninite.com site Adobe Reader is just called Reader - I don't know why the webmaster has just labelled it as such doesn't give it it's new name. The site does not include any of the Windows Updates as they are readily available through windows. I guess he gives the other browsers as he is aware that some people prefer on of them instead of IE. Also with IE it is probably left up to Windows Update to determine the correct version of IE because as you know IE9 will only run on Vista and above. Hope that helps a little. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Support in future releases like 13 for latest build of Yahoo Messenger 10.
Hi Keith It is worth bearing in mind that when Jaws 12 was released it might have worked with a version earlier than the one you have i.e. 10,0,0,000. They can in no way know that Yahoo will do an incremental update to Messenger which will then not work because Jaws wrote in for Yahoo M 10.0. This is the same for all software no matter who makes it and remember there are thousands of software titles out there. Jaws can only support the most popular ones but you really cannot expect them to be Fortune Tellers to be able to predict that Company X is going to update product Y and they have to remember to build in accessibility! Similar things have happened lately, which is why there have been 3 if not 4 incremental updates to Jaws 12 for Microsoft Office 2010 and Apple iTunes, because both companies did incremental updates which then affected how Jaws 12 worked with them. Because these were 2 high profile, high common usage programs Jaws did quite well in releasing updates they did not have to address if they did not want to, until the next major release. Please please remember the above before complaining that programs won't work because that an incremental update has taken place, which as far as a screen reader is concerned can knock out of jaws radar and will not work properly. It is also commonly known that some software publishers has no idea of accessibility whatsoever where as if their programmers knew what was out there, and aware of guidelines in place to make software more accessible this wouldn't be a problem, because when it comes to Windows one of the worst offenders are Microsoft themselves! You only need to look at Windows Mobile 7 to note they have built in no accessibility! Also if you take MS Office for the Mac they have not built accessibility into that either. The above applies to all operating systems and I really do not want to go off topic, but from the above you can apply the thinking to all software titles and apps for computers and mobile phones and until you get this concept you will never understand how difficult it is for people to program in accessibility. Sorry folks if this is a bit long drawn out but I felt this point, so often over-looked by people, needed to be pointed out. When you have installed TBI you will need to reboot your pc, the program will tell you this. Once your computer has restarted you will then need to launch Image for Windows which should be on your desktop. It is at this point a box will appear on-screen but as people have said jaws will not read it, so if you have very poor sight it is probably a good idea to get someone sighted to help you will this step - they need to click on the Enter Key button and then Jaws should come back and speak to you. Thanks for the info Wynn But Outlook 2010 has reverted to back to how it was in Jaws 11 whereas I have to either cursor down then back up to read the current message details in a list view or Insert + Up Arrow. If I read a page on www.macworld.co.uk I can see the page appears on white on black then it is immediately covered with white flash sort of thing and it is then only possible to see some of the adverts. This is using Windows 7 using the High Contrast white on black theme. And what's all this rubbish about NFL? Isn't that putting U S A specific stuff that only affects the USA and not the rest of the world? Isn't Jaws a GLOBAL product? So does this mean you are now going to do the same for every country in the world giving them the same instant access to their favourite sport? I doubt it very much so why are you giving a preference to American users and not the rest of the world? I think have been moaning enough about the amount of money they pay for Jaws, so why are those outside the US having to pay for US only features? Thanks to all of you who have provided feedback and we look forward to hearing move in the coming weeks. Regards, Eric Damery Freedom Scientific New Features added in second Public Beta, JAWS 12.0.451 The following features have been added to the latest JAWS 12 public beta release. Reading HTML Tables The default setting for reading HTML table titles has changed so that JAWS now conforms to industry defined HTML standards by only reading table headers that are properly marked up. You can see this when using the CTRL+ALT+ARROW Keys to move through an HTML table. While the default setting is now set to Only Marked Headers, you can continue to use earlier functionality for reading HTML tables if you are more comfortable with those settings. To change settings, press INSERT+V to open JAWS options, and then press T to move to the Table Titles Announce option. Next, press SPACEBAR to cycle through and select a new setting, and then ENTER to save the change. Remember that you can always use Personalized Settings (INSERT+SHIFT+V) to customize how JAWS reads table column and row headers on any given Web site, without modifying how JAWS reads table headers on other Web sites. For more information about reading HTML tables, visit the Tables section of Freedom Scientific's Surf's Up http://www.freedomscientific.com/../Training/Surfs-Up/Tables.htm . NCAA Football Lookup Source in Research It NCAA Football is a new addition to Research It. Use it to search for the schedules or results of your favorite college football teams. Because of the number of college teams, there are several ways to get search results. One way is to open Research It (INSERT+SPACEBAR, R), type a date using the mm/dd/ date format, and then select NCAA Football. This shows a full list of games scheduled or played during that week. Another is to leave the search field blank and see schedules or results for the current week. The last way is to search for your favorite college teams by typing team names separated by a semicolon. This shows the current week's schedules or results for those schools. For example, type Florida; Texas; California to view results for teams with Florida, Texas, or California in their names. Search results display in the Virtual Viewer as a link so that you can open a Web browser and read a recap of past games or a preview of future games. Press CTRL+DOWN ARROW to move between the dates displayed for the week. Update to NBA Scores and NHL Scores The NBA Scores and NHL Scores lookup sources in Research It have been expanded and now provide links to box scores and game summaries. Each game listed in the Virtual Viewer is now a link. Select any link to launch your Web browser and read a recap and statistics of past games, or a preview of future games. Improvements with Adobe Flash JAWS can now announce buttons and other items that did not work correctly on some Flash Web sites. Examples of Web sites that now function properly are Audible.com and Dominos.ca. Enhancements in JAWS 12.0.451 (September 2010) The following is a list of improvements made between this release and the initial public beta release. Avast has got me out of quite a few holes that many other anti-virus checkers haven't been able to, i spend my time testing various checkers this is what i base my opinions on, and user feedback as well. As i said i don't wish to become involved in a debate, each to his own if you're happy with what you use then good for you. Mo. Gerald Levy wrote: To say Avast has gone out of its way to make its anti-virus program blind accessible is laughable. It may well be more accessible now than it was previously, but it is still not as blind friendly as MSE. If Avast really wanted to make its program blind friendly, they would make it easy to remove without having to jump through hoops. In some cases, you need to reboot into safe mode to completely remove it, which is impossible without sighted help. How blind friendly is this? That's why I never considered Avast for my anti-virus program of choice. Until someone can produce test results demonstrating that it is clearly superior to MSE at malware detection, I'll stick with the latter. I think the star is the third key in from the right on the top row of the numpad. Re: [JAWS-Users] re-turn off jaws auto reading
Hi Wayne I recently had a client who had some sort of software that disabled websites from working with Jaws. AS soon as I disable the software Jaws read everything as it should. I think the software was something like Raport. Go to General options. Arrow down one time to document read automatically. Press the space bar to turn it off. If you tab over one time you will hear the following helpful message. When this option is turned on, JAWS performs a Say All and automatically begins reading the Web page that is open in your browser as usual. This mode is convenient when surfing the Web with Internet Explorer or Firefox; however, there are many times when a user would prefer that JAWS just loads the page and reports the number of links and headings, but avoids starting a say all. This could be very useful to disable if you are working on pages with forms or using JAWS in conjunction with MAGic. The default setting for this option is on. [JAWS-Users] Jaws 10 and no links in IE7 or IE8
Hello list I have a client using Windows XP and Jaws and when he surfs the net he gets no link on every web he visits. I logged in and checked and also checked his Outlook Express and Jaws can see the links in emails but not in IE. I uninstalled IE8 and rolled back to IE7 to see if this was the problem and it was the same. Just to check I used my pc to go to the same site he was having problems with and Jaws read fine and picked up all the links so on his I tried another website, it was at this point I found out that it was all websites were showing no links even though you can see there is. Has anyone any idea why and what settings he could have changed? I have to say though if he is on the computer he might leave the pc and his kids will go to the keyboard and press any keys thinking it's a bit of fun as they are not young enough to realise what they are doing, and no matter how much I tell him he just will not keep his young children away from the pc! All help greatly appreciated! HTH Larry Elliot GD (Guide Dog) For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] MS outlook2010
Well I am using Office 2010 beta and there is a lot to get used too!! Any tool bars that were in Office 2007 have completely disappeared! In Outlook specifically, when using the Unread folder, the columns are read in the wrong order and I can't seem to find a way of fixing it and Sight Sound had no idea either. Message rules can be done very easily using the application key on the message in the list view of messages. However, to edit rules is a bit more complicated as you can only access them from within a message and using the ribbons. Though I do love the quick features on the application key now, it's much easier! On the whole I'm pretty impressed with Office 2010! Re: [JAWS-Users] looking for a free accessible acount or budgget program that is accessible with jaws 7.0 and windows xp
Hello Mich I doubt very much if you will find a free one that is accessible. Over the years I have used Money Matters and Microsoft Money, the latter being inaccessible. Now I use Money Talks from APH Software (www.aph.org) and find it great and it gives you all the information you want. Though I've written a few notes which I'm going to post to the Money Talks list, it is very flexible! And it is only $39 though I think with the transfer rate I paid about £24.
