Have you tried the Native fax and scan in vista? It works a bit like Outlook

Type Fax and scan in to the search box.

Re: [JAWS-Users] PDF why some work and some don't?

2012-02-26 Thread LaMcAs
This is because the ones that say blank are only images and have not been
formatted correctly by the pdf creator, thus you have to use OpenBook,
Kurzweil or another OCR program (Abbyy FineReader) to perform OCR (optical
character recognition).

Hi all,
Sometimes I can press application key on PDF and I enter on open with Adobe
x and the file reads fine. Other times it states empty document or
something like that.
So my question is
Is there a formatting issue that could be implemented on PDF file so that
when one opens it the PDF reads fine with Adobe4x reader?
I am on a web site and there is a PDF. When I open it states empty doc.
I download it, scan with OpenBook and doc is mostly readable. I would love
to instruct this web master to get PDF in accessible format but haven't a
clue what to say.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Ann

The latest pc and laptops I've seen this on are Dell's and the Lite will
only do a system recovery media and they are trying to get you to buy the
fully pledged program which will allow you to do other backups. I strongly
suggest you don't buy the upgraded version as it is likely to be

Hello there;
Has this just appeared recently?
Or, is this normal for your computer, perhaps it's software put on by the
manufacturer, Dell, hp, etc.
Do you see the program in add slash remove, or, control panel, programs and
features?
Or, maybe it's some type of malware/spyware?
Most likely you can uninstall if it's a program.
Did you do a google search to asertaine if it's a ligitament program?

arrow up or down and jaws will read it, however when I open an email and
read it, the above happens.

Hi Patti. If you are referring to the latest youtube to mp3

Jaws doesn't seem to read the options as well as it did in the last

you can choose the format to which you want to convert the video
into. I notice now, you can choose between: OG, Wave, MP4 and MP3.
Perhaps, you have it set to MP4? and this is causing your trouble?

 Take care

Hi Patti,
It looks to me like you are downloading the videos, and not the audio.
From what you have written, you need the youtube to mp3 converter, not
 the youtube downloader.

Hi Patti. If you are referring to the latest youtube to mp3
converter? I think that is also the version that I just upgraded too
 a
few days ago.
Jaws doesn't seem to read the options as well as it did in the last
version. When you tab through the options? After pasting in the URL
of the youtube video you want to convert. There is a list. In which
you can choose the format to which you want to convert the video
into. I notice now, you can choose between: OG, Wave, MP4 and MP3.
Perhaps, you have it set to MP4? and this is causing your trouble?

 Take care
 Jason

Hi All,
I am running windows 7 on this computer with outlook 2007, and jaws 12 on a
64 bit machine.
I have several folders in outlook, and I have them off of my In Box. When I
want to read a message in one of these folders, the message won't read when
I enter the folder. It will read, if I tab over to, it, but it doesn't land
on the message when I open the folder. If I hit control Y and go to that
folder, it will open and read the messages. The Reading pain is set to off.
So, I have my In Box, and then, all the folders I have created after that,
and if I go directly to one of those folders without hitting control Y
first, the messages will not read when I hit enter on that folder. They only
read if I hit control Y first. Why can't I just go to a folder, hit enter,
and see the list of messages?

The Ninite site with the flash player tells me, You have version 10.0.0

Re: [JAWS-Users] a slick method for installing applications

2011-06-07 Thread LaMcAs
Hi

On the http://ninite.com site Adobe Reader is just called Reader - I don't
know why the webmaster has just labelled it as such doesn't give it it's new
name.

The site does not include any of the Windows Updates as they are readily
available through windows. I guess he gives the other browsers as he is
aware that some people prefer on of them instead of IE. Also with IE it is
probably left up to Windows Update to determine the correct version of IE
because as you know IE9 will only run on Vista and above.

Hope that helps a little.

Thank you, David. I tried using the site David sent out for installing the
new Adobe for Windows 7 64 bit for I.E.9, Yes, it is now in my control
panel/programs but does not work on a site where it used to work with I.E.8.
I think I missed something. Is it on this list of applications? If so, what
is it's name. Also, once I check it, how do I get to install it? Hope I'm
making sense.
Just by some luck, I found that I still have I.E.8 in my laptop and
everything works fine when I use that.

Hi all:
Just wondering,
I'm using IE8 on a windows 64 bit machine running Win7 and JFW 12.
Lately I've been coding a site which I've been programing completely on html
4.01 and javascript.
It works well for sighted users, and runs smoothly with NVDA and Voice Over,
but for some reason whenever I go to it with IE and JFW 12.58 all it says is
blank, blank, blank as I try to move, and it won't allow me to bring up
links or anything.

Is this an IE issue or a JFW issue?

Is it something to do with the software or the way I'm coding my sight that
won't allow it to run with JFW?
As far as I know my website stands within W3C standards so I don't know what
could be wrong?

Thanks,

Jorge

Bank of America has just come out with a new program called Rapport that
 is
supposed to supplement antivirus software in protecting online
communications. I am running XP, IE 8, and Jaws 12, latest update. I
installed Rapport, and it protected me by making Internet Explorer 8.0
totally unusable. No links on any page I went to. I tried using the
Rapport console to shut down; no luck. Unable to shut it down, and unable
to uninstall it from the control panel. When I tried uninstalling, a web
page came up which I browsed with the Jaws cursor. I clicked on Chat with

 a

I ended up having to do a system restore to get rid of it.

I'll be curious to know if others have success with this program.

Yes, I've already sent a message to Bank of America.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Support in future releases like 13 for latest build of Yahoo Messenger 10.

2011-05-14 Thread LaMcAs
Hi Keith

It is worth bearing in mind that when Jaws 12 was released it might have
worked with a version earlier than the one you have i.e. 10,0,0,000. They
can in no way know that Yahoo will do an incremental update to Messenger
which will then not work because Jaws wrote in for Yahoo M 10.0.

This is the same for all software no matter who makes it and remember there
are thousands of software titles out there. Jaws can only support the most
popular ones but you really cannot expect them to be Fortune Tellers to be
able to predict that Company X is going to update product Y and they have to
remember to build in accessibility!

Similar things have happened lately, which is why there have been 3 if not 4
incremental updates to Jaws 12 for Microsoft Office 2010 and Apple iTunes,
because both companies did incremental updates which then affected how Jaws
12 worked with them.

Because these were 2 high profile, high common usage programs Jaws did quite
well in releasing updates they did not have to address if they did not want
to, until the next major release.

Please please remember the above before complaining that programs won't work
because that an incremental update has taken place, which as far as a screen
reader is concerned can knock out of jaws radar and will not work properly.
It is also commonly known that some software publishers has no idea of
accessibility whatsoever where as if their programmers knew what was out
there, and aware of guidelines in place to make software more accessible
this wouldn't be a problem, because when it comes to Windows one of the
worst offenders are Microsoft themselves! You only need to look at Windows
Mobile 7 to note they have built in no accessibility! Also if you take MS
Office for the Mac they have not built accessibility into that either.

The above applies to all operating systems and I really do not want to go
off topic, but from the above you can apply the thinking to all software
titles and apps for computers and mobile phones and until you get this
concept you will never understand how difficult it is for people to program
in accessibility.

Sorry folks if this is a bit long drawn out but I felt this point, so often
over-looked by people, needed to be pointed out.

Do you (or your brother) see any error message when JAWS doesn't read it? If
you do, it may be helpful to know it. have you gone throughadobe's
accessibility options? Reader Options? Are the pages normal sized, or large?
(If large, then that could be causing more delay. the way around that is to
have Adobe process just one page at a
time.) in any event, if you have OCR capable of recognizing pdf that will
likely do a better job with the particular pdf.

 Listers,

I have installed and uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe reader9.3, and
 am
having the same problem; wich is, Jaws isn't seeing some of the
 scannings.
My brother is telling me that the document is there as clear as day
 but
Jaws12 just isn't seeing it. Now other scanning of the same document
 jaws
 does see and read.

When Jaws doesn't see the document the message is, alert, know
 pages. But
the pages are there! I also know that the pages are there because
 when
Adobe is putting the pages in order Jaws will say how many pages there
 are,
 and again, my brother reads.

Can someone tell me how and why, is Jaws12, reading some scans and not
reading others of the exact same document?!

This is a health document and I really want to have it in PDF form,
 it's
about 70 pages which is really nothing for adobe or jaws to handle.

Well, Please forgive me for such a long post, but I need this help.

 Thanks! To all.

When you have installed TBI you will need to reboot your pc, the program
will tell you this.

Once your computer has restarted you will then need to launch Image for
Windows which should be on your desktop.

It is at this point a box will appear on-screen but as people have said jaws
will not read it, so if you have very poor sight it is probably a good idea
to get someone sighted to help you will this step - they need to click on
the Enter Key button and then Jaws should come back and speak to you.

Hi Alan

Why bother with printing it at all?

Open OpenBook and open the pdf file there and OB will do what is needed to
read it to you!

Just like you get paper stuff through your post to read you just scan it,
having the computer copy of something just cuts out the scanning bit.

You can print anything you produce to the OpenBook Virtual printer, I'm

 Subject: [JAWS-Users] PDF Files

 Hi Guys,

I am very new to JAWS, so I apologise in advance for my lack of knowledge.
I have been sent a PDF form and have been assured that it is accessible
 and
can be completed and then printed off.

I have never opened a PDF on Windows before as I am generally a Mac user,
but sadly VoiceOver on the Mac does not play nicely with Adobe products.

I opened the PDF in Adobe Acrobat 10 and the version of JAWS is 11.
 Should
the PDF start reading automatically? I have tabbed around and also hit
 the
arrow keys, but nothing seems to happen.

I can get the application menus to work, but I can't seem to get JAWS to
speak anything on the 7 page document. I have enough sight to see that it
 is not a blank page.

Do I have to do anything specific with a interactive form? Or is there a
keyboard shortcut I am not pressing to tell JAWS to start reading the PDF?

Many thanks in advance and if anyone would rather discuss this off list,
then feel free to email me.

 Chris

In Windows XP and earlier, you could down arrow, or up arrow thru the

In Windows 7, it is my understanding that the search box is at the top

It would appear to me that down arrowing would move to the next item

[JAWS-Users] dictionary.com

2010-12-06 Thread LaMcAs
Dear list

I have a friend who likes to use www.dictionary.com but I've managed to turn
off the mouse over announcement using the settings centre but when reading
the definitions Jaws keeps saying button and I really do not know which
setting to use to turn it off. And if it is turned off would it affect how
other websites read or is there a way of just doing it for dictionary.com.

All help gratefully appreciated.

I think you are actually wanting to put a password on the BIOS? Once this is
done no-one can use the computer at all unless they enter the correct
password. However you would need sighted help in order to do this as the
bios is not accessible with speech?

Another way to do it is to go to User Account and delete all the accounts

the Guest Account is disabled.

Hello all.
Before possibly reporting this to Freedom Scientific through their bug
report form, I am noticing inconsistent behaviour when reading messages
in Thunderbird. For example JAWS will read part of the body of the
message twice, with the second time reading in its entirity. whereas
other times it reads the message fine. This did not happen with the
first public beta.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Changes and fixes in update for the JAWS 12 Public Beta posted September 22nd

2010-09-23 Thread LaMcAs
Thanks for the info Wynn

But Outlook 2010 has reverted to back to how it was in Jaws 11 whereas I
have to either cursor down then back up to read the current message details
in a list view or Insert + Up Arrow.

If I read a page on www.macworld.co.uk I can see the page appears on white
on black then it is immediately covered with white flash sort of thing and
it is then only possible to see some of the adverts.

This is using Windows 7 using the High Contrast white on black theme.

And what's all this rubbish about NFL? Isn't that putting U S A specific
stuff that only affects the USA and not the rest of the world? Isn't Jaws a
GLOBAL product? So does this mean you are now going to do the same for
every country in the world giving them the same instant access to their
favourite sport? I doubt it very much so why are you giving a preference to
American users and not the rest of the world?

I think have been moaning enough about the amount of money they pay for
Jaws, so why are those outside the US having to pay for US only features?

Beta posted September 22nd

Greeting all,

For those of you who have installed the first public beta of JAWS 12 in
early September, you should be alerted of an update when you restart it
today. Below, I have included the list of changes we have made and we
are continuing work now as we work towards another update in early
October. Thanks to all of you who have provided feedback and we look
forward to hearing move in the coming weeks.

Regards,

Eric Damery

Freedom Scientific

New Features added in second Public Beta, JAWS 12.0.451

The following features have been added to the latest JAWS 12 public beta
release.

Reading HTML Tables

The default setting for reading HTML table titles has changed so that
JAWS now conforms to industry defined HTML standards by only reading
table headers that are properly marked up. You can see this when using
the CTRL+ALT+ARROW Keys to move through an HTML table.

While the default setting is now set to Only Marked Headers, you can
continue to use earlier functionality for reading HTML tables if you are
more comfortable with those settings. To change settings, press INSERT+V
to open JAWS options, and then press T to move to the Table Titles
Announce option. Next, press SPACEBAR to cycle through and select a new
setting, and then ENTER to save the change.

Remember that you can always use Personalized Settings (INSERT+SHIFT+V)
to customize how JAWS reads table column and row headers on any given
Web site, without modifying how JAWS reads table headers on other Web
sites.

For more information about reading HTML tables, visit the Tables section
of Freedom Scientific's Surf's Up
http://www.freedomscientific.com/../Training/Surfs-Up/Tables.htm .

NCAA Football Lookup Source in Research It

NCAA Football is a new addition to Research It. Use it to search for the
schedules or results of your favorite college football teams. Because of
the number of college teams, there are several ways to get search
results.

One way is to open Research It (INSERT+SPACEBAR, R), type a date using
the mm/dd/ date format, and then select NCAA Football. This shows a
full list of games scheduled or played during that week. Another is to
leave the search field blank and see schedules or results for the
current week. The last way is to search for your favorite college teams
by typing team names separated by a semicolon. This shows the current
week's schedules or results for those schools. For example, type
Florida; Texas; California to view results for teams with Florida,
Texas, or California in their names.

Search results display in the Virtual Viewer as a link so that you can
open a Web browser and read a recap of past games or a preview of future
games. Press CTRL+DOWN ARROW to move between the dates displayed for the
week.

Update to NBA Scores and NHL Scores

The NBA Scores and NHL Scores lookup sources in Research It have been
expanded and now provide links to box scores and game summaries. Each
game listed in the Virtual Viewer is now a link. Select any link to
launch your Web browser and read a recap and statistics of past games,
or a preview of future games.

Improvements with Adobe Flash

JAWS can now announce buttons and other items that did not work
correctly on some Flash Web sites. Examples of Web sites that now
function properly are Audible.com and Dominos.ca.

Enhancements in JAWS 12.0.451 (September 2010)

The following is a list of improvements made between this release and
the initial public beta release.

Avast's removal process has vastly improved from version 4.8, can you
positively state its not better than MSEE if you haven't tried their
latest version? if you have, then that's just your opinion, its enough for

me that i have to use microsoft's software for daily tasks, i'll refrane
from using their anti virus packages as well purely because if they do
inadvertantly break something which they're almost certainly bound to do
at some point just like they've done in the past, then i'm not being
lumbered with an unnecissary problem. Avast has got me out of quite a few
holes that many other anti-virus checkers haven't been able to, i spend my

time testing various checkers this is what i base my opinions on, and user

feedback as well. As i said i don't wish to become involved in a debate,
each to his own if you're happy with what you use then good for you.

 Gerald Levy wrote:

To say Avast has gone out of its way to make its anti-virus program blind

accessible is laughable. It may well be more accessible now than it was
previously, but it is still not as blind friendly as MSE. If Avast really

wanted to make its program blind friendly, they would make it easy to
remove without having to jump through hoops. In some cases, you need to
reboot into safe mode to completely remove it, which is impossible
without sighted help. How blind friendly is this? That's why I never
considered Avast for my anti-virus program of choice. Until someone can
produce test results demonstrating that it is clearly superior to MSE at
malware detection, I'll stick with the latter.

Usually, the right mouse button brings up the context menu for an item, so

To actually do a right click from the keyboard, press Insert plus numpad

Press insert+V. Go to General options. Arrow down one time to document read
automatically. Press the space bar to turn it off. If you tab over one time
you will hear the following helpful message.
When this option is turned on, JAWS performs a Say All and automatically
begins reading the Web page that is open in your browser as usual.
This mode is convenient when surfing the Web with Internet Explorer or
Firefox; however, there are many times when a user would prefer that JAWS
just loads the page and reports the number of links and headings, but avoids
starting a say all. This could be very useful to disable if
you are working on pages with forms or using JAWS in conjunction with MAGic.

The default setting for this option is on.
I am using jaws 11, I hope this helps you.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 10 and no links in IE7 or IE8

2010-05-31 Thread LaMcAs
Hello list

I have a client using Windows XP and Jaws and when he surfs the net he gets
no link on every web he visits.

I logged in and checked and also checked his Outlook Express and Jaws can
see the links in emails but not in IE.

I uninstalled IE8 and rolled back to IE7 to see if this was the problem and
it was the same.

Just to check I used my pc to go to the same site he was having problems
with and Jaws read fine and picked up all the links so on his I tried
another website, it was at this point I found out that it was all websites
were showing no links even though you can see there is.

Has anyone any idea why and what settings he could have changed?

I have to say though if he is on the computer he might leave the pc and his
kids will go to the keyboard and press any keys thinking it's a bit of fun
as they are not young enough to realise what they are doing, and no matter
how much I tell him he just will not keep his young children away from the
pc!

All help greatly appreciated!

2010-05-27 Thread LaMcAs
Well I am using Office 2010 beta and there is a lot to get used too!! Any
tool bars that were in Office 2007 have completely disappeared!

In Outlook specifically, when using the Unread folder, the columns are read
in the wrong order and I can't seem to find a way of fixing it and Sight
Sound had no idea either.

Message rules can be done very easily using the application key on the
message in the list view of messages. However, to edit rules is a bit more
complicated as you can only access them from within a message and using the
ribbons. Though I do love the quick features on the application key now,
it's much easier!

On the whole I'm pretty impressed with Office 2010!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS reading Outlook 2007 message list fields
incorrectly

My folder view is set to read the subject field before the from field. But
JAWS 11 is reading the from field an extra time- before reading the subject
and from fields. If I look at the table headers, the first from field is not
there. Where is JAWS getting this extra information and is there a fix?
Thanks.

Cher

Hello Mich

I doubt very much if you will find a free one that is accessible.

Over the years I have used Money Matters and Microsoft Money, the latter
being inaccessible.

Now I use Money Talks from APH Software (www.aph.org) and find it great and
it gives you all the information you want.

Though I've written a few notes which I'm going to post to the Money Talks
list, it is very flexible! And it is only $39 though I think with the
transfer rate I paid about £24.
