[JAWS-Users] 360 Total Security and how to get rid of it?

2016-08-03 Thread Lisa P. Geibel

Hi,
Please, please, tell me there's a way that my husband and i can get rid
of this on our own as totally blind people? We have the latest version
of JAWS and are using Windows 10. When my husband got an i Cloud update
this program got on our computer and it now is preventing us from
updating to the latest TWBlue or using it at all. It's also slowing the
computer down somewhat too. We have and use Viper and are amazed it
allowed this on here. The program is not accessible with either JAWS or
NVDA and we've tried to remove it the normal way to remove a program
with no success. If anyone can help or knows anything about this, please
email me either privately or on list? Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] Help, please?

2014-01-18 Thread Lisa D Porter

Hi,
I'm dealing with this annoying issue in my emails. I'm using Windows 7
Home Premium, JAWS 15 and Thunderbird 24.2.0. When reading emails, I
hear this XWestern thing before any text of the email, on blank lines
and such. When trying to demonstrate this problem to others by
forwarding a message to them, they do not hear this. I've had my
settings to read in HTML and Plain Text with the same results. It does
not do this if reading messages with NVDA. Can anyone help please? It
also did this with JAWS 14. Do I need to back Thunderbird back to a
previous version, change a setting or am I just stuck with this? Thank you.

[JAWS-Users] Possible bug in JAWS 15 with latest Skype?

Hi,
I'm running JAWS 15 with Windows 8 and the latest version of Skype. I've
run into a strange issue. When IMing with someone, I can no longer read
what they say with alt 1, 2 and so on. Is this normal? Is there a

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws saying wrong things at times

2013-10-29 Thread Lisa D Porter

Hi,
I have a different question about JAWS saying wrong things or not saying
things. I'm running Windows 8 and JAWS 14 as I haven't installed the
update yet. Sometimes I've noticed if I'm reading something and try to
use ctrl left or right arrow instead of hearing the word, I hear >. In
some messages I was sending today I would sign Lisa as I will here or
things I'd put in the message it wouldn't read it till I hit left arrow
and then it was there, but if I did the command up arrow-JAWS it would
not read that it was there. My mail program is the latest beta for
Thunderbird and I keep saying I'm going to downgrade it, but I might not
have to. Have any of you seen this behavior or do you know of a fix?
Thanks and sorry for the long post.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problems With Rakuten.com Site

2013-07-12 Thread Lisa belville
Hmm, Just tried this with IE 8 and JAWS 10 and was able to add the product
to the cart. I moved the virtual cursor over the word product in the
button and used the left mouse click option to do a single click. Once I
did this, the add to cart link showed up as visited, and I got a message
from the web page saying the product was successfully added to my cart.

You might try the above method and then refreshing the page with insert
escape and see if this makes a difference, because sometimes links are
activated but the info doesn't show up until you refresh the JAWS buffer.

Hi gang. I would like to purchase a Kingston 8gb flash drive from the

13. I cannot seem to activate any links on this page, including the link
to add the item to the shopping cart. When I click on some of the links,
the entire page seems to go blank and JAWS will not read anything. I have
tried the JAWS cursor, mouse clicking and the links list with no luck. I
have tried both IE 8 and Firefox 18, and get the same results with both
browsers. I cannot even get their contact information because nothing
happens when I click on the Contact Us link. I am running XP, but I don't
think that should make any difference. Has anyone been able to shop
successfully on the Rakuten.com site using JAWS? If so, did you need to
change any settings? Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] focusing on buttons

2013-03-12 Thread Lisa belville
Oh, I feel better, I thought it was just me and my antiquated JAWS 10 using
IE 8. This is particularly bad on the schwans.com site, and sometimes even
bringing up a list of links and pressing enter to activate the link that way
doesn't solve the issue. If I try moving to the link instead, the cursor is
actually one or two lines above the link, which explains why I was always
going to other parts of the site totally unrelated to what I was clicking
on. I usually refresh the screen and then move the virtual cursor right to
the place where the link starts and then either left click or press enter.
it's still hit and miss, though.

Honestly, the only way to avoid this is to use another screen reader which
won't be mentioned.

Yup, it has been doing that since at least Jaws 13. Very frustrating.

You need to go into the links list to make sure it focuses correctly.

I've had a similar problem to the one Miriam is having. If I go to the
AT&T website to check mail, every time I hit the link for "spam", it
takes me to "create a new folder". I can only get to the spam folder
using the jaws cursor. Then, to empty the spam folder, I have to go back
to the jaws cursor since, using the virtual cursor on "empty the spam
folder", it sends me to the sent folder.

There are several other websites with buttons rather than links that
give me grief as well. It seems to be a focus thing since jaws reads a
and I'm really on b. karen

2013-01-04 Thread Lisa belville
Another solution is to have the site mail you your password, assuming you
have the same Email address you had when the account was originally set up.
This usually doesn't take very long for me, even from smaller mom and pop

Several strategies for dealing with passwords are:

Use the same password everywhere but add the name of the site to the end
of the password.

Use a password vault. That way you only have to remember one password,
then you can grab the password out of the vault, and you don't have to
remember each individual password, or username for that fact. And, you
can make the passwords extremely complex since you don't have to remember
them.

You could do the whole spreadsheet thing.

Also, one thing I did years ago, when I got frustrated because any
username I came up with was never accepted on every web site, there are
only so many combinations of Dan rossi DRossi DRossiBirthDay blah blah
blah. I just recreated all my accounts with a nonsense word that no one
else would ever use. Now I have the same username on every account. Which
is helpful.

Also, you can use grade two braille as a great way to come up with some
very funky passwords. Lots of numbers and punctuation marks and no
dictionary words.

Hi Dan .

Keep Me Signed In" Checkbox
a.. Troubleshooting Problems Signing In
a.. Signing Out
When We Ask You To Sign In
We ask you to sign into your Amazon.com account any time we need to verify
your identity. This includes times when you access account or order
information to review or change something.

"Keep Me Signed In" Checkbox
When you sign in on Amazon.com, you may be presented with the option to
"Keep me signed in." If you choose this option, Amazon will keep you signed
in for common activities such as making purchases and viewing your orders.
This option will only apply to the browser that you are using when you
select the box.

You should only choose to stay signed in if you're using a computer that you
don't share with other people. If you share the computer with others, they
may be able to access your Amazon.com account and perform actions on your
behalf without knowing your password. Never choose this feature if you are
on a public terminal, such as at a library or an internet café.

Even if you choose to remain signed in, you'll still be prompted for your
password at least every two weeks. We may still ask you to enter your
password for certain activities such as modifying your account.

Stop Staying Signed In
If you no longer wish to stay signed in on a particular browser, simply sign
out of Amazon.com on that browser. If you don't have physical access to that
browser, you can cancel all saved sign- ins by resetting your Amazon.com
password. This will cancel all existing "Keep me signed in" feature in"
enabled.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Amazon funkiness.

2013-01-03 Thread Lisa belville

Hi, Dan.

This has been going on quite a while, at least it has for me, but I'm using
an older version of JAWS, still with IE 8 and XP, though.

If you click the my account link, you're taken to a page containing a list
of links that lists all of the info you can see pertaining to your account.
You can choose from Orders, Address and payment, etc. Once you click on one
of these options, a new page loads with the fields for user name and
password.

So for example, when I click the my account link, I wait for that page to
load and choose the Orders link. When the page loads, I move to the bottom
of the page with control plus the end key and press shift plus B and land on
the Continue button. Shift tabbing from here will take you to the password
and user name fields respectively.

Hope this helps. It's an extra step that's completely unnecessary, IMO, but
you can get around it.

Like someone else that posted here, when I first began using Win 8, I
loved it too until I started trying to do more of the things I'm used to
doing and discovered some of its inaccessibility issues so I reverted
back to 7 and that was a nightmare. I don't like that I could never get
the Weather or news app to read with either JAWS or NVDA. I did not like
that I could not use the built in chat feature. I was also disappointed
that the built in mail program wasn't accessible for me. I'm happy in
Windows 7 again till things are more accessible with 8.

Just to generalize, my take would be as follows:

If things perform as you like now, then it is probably not worth the
upgrade. If you want quicker boot-up times, you may get them with
Windows 8. If you are an access trainer, as I was, then you might want
to put it on your system either as an upgrade, or as a dual-boot so you
can become familiar with some of the new features as the experience is
quite a bit different from earlier versions of Windows.

[JAWS-Users] Web Braille with JAWS?

2012-11-07 Thread Lisa D. Porter

Hi all,
I just got Windows 8 and am using it with JAWS 14. I was able to
download books from Web Braille with no issues in Windows 7, but now in
8, I can't in either Firefox or IE. Have any of you heard of any issues
with this and my type of setup? I also have taken into consideration the
site could be down or they're stopping it in preparation for the move to
BARD. Please help? Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] Windows 8 and messengers

2012-11-03 Thread Lisa D. Porter

Hi all,
The only messenger programs I can get alerts when someone pages me are
Skype and Windows Live. Thank God, FB is integrated with them. Does
anyone have any clue why I can't get them with JAWS 14 in Windows 8? The
built in messaging app that comes with Windows 8 is totally inaccessible
for me. Has anyone been able to make this work or had any of these
problems?

2012-10-31 Thread Lisa D. Porter

Hi Alex,
So far aside from the little quirks I just wrote about, I really like
Windows 8 and notice no major differences as long as you don't mind the
file explorer thing popping up when you want to go anywhere and not
having the quicker ways to get there. That's why i put shortcuts to my
most visited places on my desktop. If you have any more questions or

Oh, it's not exactly the same, but it mostly is and although it doesn't

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 8 / JAWS 14 Installation Problem

2012-10-31 Thread Lisa D. Porter

Hi Tim,
I did not have the same experience as you, but once JAWS was installed,
the authorization box popped up so I went through the steps to authorize
it, restarted JAWS as it said and then the authorization box came up
again after telling me the authorization was successful. I called FS as
didn't have any more authorizations left. For some reason I'm only
getting 1 at a time which makes it difficult if something comes up on
the weekend and I have none. Good thing have NVDA as a backup I guess.
LOL Anyway, FS had never heard of this and she said she would bring it
to the attention of those that needed to know as it could be a bug with
JAWS 14. Has this happened to any of you? Also, MS Word told me
yesterday I had to register it again so hope that doesn't stick. Have
today left and my time will be up, it said.

I downloaded JAWS 14 64 bit using another machine and installed it on my

reinstalled JAWS several times with the same error. The internet

a problem with the internet connection. If I do a check for updates on
the help menu it says there is a problem with the internet connection.

The internet connection is working with no problems. Only JAWS can't
find it. I don't think it's trying to use the connection because it
comes back instantly and says there is a problem with the connection.

I have successfully installed JAWS 14 on a Windows 7 laptop using the
USB modem and the Verizon software. (VZAccess Manager.)

Not sure what to check or why JAWS doesn't recognize the connection.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

[JAWS-Users] JAWS & sending emails

2012-09-25 Thread Lisa D. Porter

Hi all,
I'm using JAWS 13 as don't usually run beta programs. I'm using it on a
Windows 7 Dell laptop and my mail client is Thunderbird, the latest
version. Whenever I try to send a message to certain people in my
address book JAWS will put a ( before the address and a ) after it thus
causing the message not to be sent. If I clear the address from my book
I can then create a brand new message manually typing it in and it goes
just fine. Thank God I also have NVDA on my system to do little tests
like this and I hadn't even planned to test it, but I ended up in here
with NVDA and was able to create a message with one of the addresses
JAWS gives me problems on. The message was sent successfully. Any ideas
on what's up here and any possible fixes? Please? Thanks.

Hi all,
I'm posting this question for a friend. She's using JAWS 12 and
Thunderbird 12. She actually can't use this combination as it simply
won't read for her. Is there a better version of Thunderbird that she
should use? Thanks for any help.

2012-08-11 Thread Lisa D. Porter

Hi Scott,
I use and love Magic DVD Ripper. I used it with JAWS 9 to 13 and Windows
XP, Vista and 7. It is not free software, but very easy to use and it's
not too expensive. You can get a trial of it from

Good luck and email privately with any questions. Enjoy.

Nothing too fancy. I just want to rip some DVDs to add to iTunes so I can
play them on my Apple TV. I'm using Windows 7, 64 bit, with JAWS 13.

it doesn't. You don't see any of the recommendations based on your shopping

Hi group:

I finally got brave enough to try Amazon and I love it.

Most of you probablly already use the Accessible Amazon site.
I just wanted to let the rest of you know how easy the site is to use.
Just go to amazon.com, down arrow one time to the accessible link and
press

enter.
You can save this site in your favorite list and you can put a shortcut
key

for it on your desktop if you want to for easy access.
Amazon makes Christmas shopping much easier and more fun.

I

have, luckily I selected and copied this message.
For when I went to press f-7 to spell check my email in WLM, WLM froze and
restarted making me loose the message.
This must have something to do with the update, this has always worked
fine.

Any suggestions.

Re: [JAWS-Users] is there a way to open a link in a new window

2011-11-16 Thread Lisa belville
Well, I use IE 8, and honestly, i can't tell the difference between a new
tab and a new window if all I want is a link to be opened in a separate
window from the page I'm currently on. The functionality is the same either
way.

Control+W will close the window regardless, or if you have multiple tabs
open and forget and do an Alt+F4, IE will prompt you about closing all tabs
or the current tab.

The fastest way is to tab to the Move to link button and press enter. Now
you're on the hyperlink itself. now press Shift+enter and this will do the
trick.

I have this issue from time to time. sometimes moving the physical mouse
helps and at others I need to unload and then reload JAWS, reboot, or both.

I'm not sure what causes it, but I've had it with the past few versions of
JAWS. It comes out of no where and then doesn't happen for a while, so it's
kind of hard to pinpoint a reason.

Hmm, Brian, I've been running MSE since last August and I've kept the
default scanning time of 2 Am on Sunday.

I don't see any allowed items or quarantined items. The last time I even

updating the definitions, so should there be something listed under allowed
or quarantined items, or is my inability to find them due to my using an
older version of JAWS?

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] MSE history

Hello,

I am using JAWS 12 with Windows 7 64-bit and an up-to-date Microsoft
Essentials program. I am able to get history information quite well.

Although identified as buttons, the choices like home, update, history,
and

others are really treated as page tabs.
The graphics are near the top of the window just under the status that
says

your computer is protected.
You can use CTRL+Tab key to switch pages and eventually get to history.
You can also use tab key until you find any of the following controls and
then use right arrow key to find history: Home, update, settings, help,
and
additional help. Of course, if you use tab key and find the history
choice

then using right arrow is unnecessary.
After labeling, the history choice will be identified by JAWS as
"history",

but if you route JAWS to PC and read the current button, JAWS says
"Summarize view of the items detected in previous scans and the actions
that

were taken."

If you tab from the history button, you will find a group of radio
buttons.
Use up and down arrow keys, but if you choose "all detected items" then
tab

to the list view of those items. Use down or up arrow key in the list to
review items found that the program considered malicious. With focus on
an

item in the list, use tab key to move to a read-only box that gives
information about the item. In that box, such things as category,
description and recommended action are given for your review. Continue to
use down arrow in the read-only box to find a list of files associated
with

the item selected in the list. Move back to the list and choose another
item. Each time an item is selected in the list, you can tab to the
read-only box that contains information about the given item.

If you tab past the read-only box, you will find a button for deleting the
history.

If you tab back to the group of radio buttons where you chose to view all
detected items, use down arrow key and you will find quaranteened items.
Use tab from that selection to find a list of items that the program moved
to quaranteen. Use tab to move to the read-only box for information about
the item you select in the list. use tab to move to the "Remove all"
button.

Use tab key to move back to the group of radio buttons and use down arrow
to

find allowed items. If you have allowed any then tab to the list of items
you allowed. If you move back to the radio buttons group and use down
arrow
from the choice for viewing allowed items, the next three times you use
down

arrow you will basically get a description of what each of the first three
items did.

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] MSE history

2011-02-23 Thread Lisa belville
Hi. I'm using JAWS 10, so the following may not work exactly depending on
the JAWS version.

You may not see anything because MSE doesn't show anything in the history
unless MSE detects something.

I tab to history, press enter and then tab again.

JAWS says "View the list of following items that Security essentials
detected as potentially harmful."

My version of JAWS doesn't show this, but there's a list of check boxes for
buttons. The choices are:
All detected items, Quarantined items, and allowed items. Use the down
arrow to read and select the option; it's checked automatically as soon as
it's arrowed to.

this is when I route JAWS to PC. There's a table listing the item, the
recommended action and the alert level.

The list you get would depend on which option you check and what, if
anything MSE found.

It's been a while since I've had any items listed, but I believe you route
JAWS to PC and then left click on the item. Either that or you click on the
detected item column in the table I mentioned above.

Unnecessary. you can have the two open separately at the same time, even

I use both Internet Explorer and FireFox and find them to be pretty
similar in accessibility.

Webvisum is mainly just used for solving CAPTCHAs and isn't required
for a screen reader to work with FireFox. You no longer need an invite
to get a webvisum plugin. You can just sign up and get one.

As far as flash goes, it is hit or miss on both sides. Listening to
samples on audible.com has been a problem for a long time. Apparently
in JAWS 12 it is no longer a problem. also System Access seems to have
had no issue with the samples for a while now. Having said that,
running JAWS 11 I cannot easily access samples on audible.com using
Internet Explorer, but have no problem accessing them when using
FireFox.

I see no reason not to have both browsers on your machine. It is very
nice to know that you can easily try a second browser if one is giving
you trouble. Also, the ability to automatically solve CAPTCHAs is
extremely satisfying.

Re: [JAWS-Users] update on trying to install and run mse on windows xphome with sp 3 and jaws 7.

2011-02-16 Thread Lisa belville
Mich, I get that sometimes even with JAWS 10. It won't read the system tray
icons accurately when I use the insert f11 key, I have no clue why not.

You can always minimize every thing then tab to the system tray from the
desktop. Once on the desktop, I tab once to start button, twice to land on
the taskbar, and the third time is the system tray. You'll hear whatever
icon is currently active. When I tried it just now, the icon telling me I
had new Email was there because I'd just gotten new Email.

Use the down arrow key to move through the system tray choices, then press
enter when you hear computer at risk. This should land you in the MSE main
window.

If this doesn't work, you could always just unload and then restart JAWS or
reboot the PC. This has helped with the issue of JAWS not reading system
tray icons properly.

Otherwise, I'm stumped and someone else with more knowledge will have to
give it a shot.

This does sound like more of a screen reader issue, though.

Hello Lisa. The problem is this. I am not hearing anything when I click on

but this icon only shows up for a minute and then when you go back to the

in short this is really weird and quite frustrating. I am running windows

Mich, the dialog of MSE is a bit of a combination between a Windows seven
menu structure and a old school layout.

Are you asking MSE to scan your PC or what? when you first open the
program, you should be sitting on a scan now button. If you press enter
here, I believe the default is to do a quick scan, which really doesn't
take all that long if I remember correctly.

It's not very obvious while it's scanning; you won't get anything on a
status line, there's no progress beeps or anything like that, and because
it doesn't use resources, you won't know until you actually open the main
window. I use my JAWS cursor to read around in here, but you can also
tab to the different options for the scanning preferences.

When you go to the system tray, is there an icon in the list saying
computer status protected or computer status unprotected?

If you haven't gotten this far, let us know so we can suggest other
things. Are you getting an error message, or do you just not know for
sure if you're in the MSE window. I'd assume that an earlier version of
JAWS would work with this because the buttons and other options are
clearly labeled, but this could also be an issue.

The program's interface is like a web page, and the instructions are very

The link to download it is http://appremover.com/.

I'm currently running MSE, but my brain is blanking on the URL to download

Actually, this is more of a Windows view issue.

If this is Explorer or just a general list view from within a folder,
have you:

1. made sure the window is maximized

2. that details is checked under the view menu?

the other thing you can try is deselecting the item and using the say
current line keystroke. This should give the position of the file and
the details, assuming you've made sure that the details option has been
checked under the view menu.

Hi gang. I'm really stumped. For some reason, JAWS no longer speaks
the detail information for each file as I scroll through the list of
files in a particular folder. JAWS will speak the file name but not
the detail information like file type, file size and creation date. I

JAWS cursor or by pressing the Alt key twice to launch and exit the
Menu bar. I haven't changed any JAWS or Windows Explorer settings.
This behavior just started recently. Can anyone explain why JAWS now
only speaks the file names and not the other detail information when I
scroll through a list of files? Is there any way to fix things so that
JAWS once again speaks the file details without having to switch to
the JAWS cursor or pressing the Alt key twice? I'm running JAWS 9 with

Re: [JAWS-Users] squares in a search box

2011-01-19 Thread Lisa Belville
Hmm, What's the difference? I've always used the control plus F command
with JAWS and IE and I get a JAWS search dialog rather than an IE dialog. I
type in what I want JAWS to search for and press enter. If it finds what I
want, I just press escape and the dialog goes away. I can use F3 or shift
plus F3 to repeat the search for the same item.

I know that the control F is used to search in IE if JAWS isn't running, so
I'm wondering if this is just duplication on behalf of JAWS or what?

Hi Kimsan,

These squares are presumably what the person sees, perhaps visual effects
or something due to the interaction of JAWS with the page. Now, there's
also JAWSKey+ctrl+f Find if you'd like to use that. Type in what you're
searching for. Press ENTER or activate the find button. if it's on the
page, it will be found. If it isn't, it won't and you'll get a bong sound
back.

2011-01-19 Thread Lisa Belville
Hmm, you mean this is a JAWS search and not a search on a specific web page,
right?
If you're using the control F to activate the JAWS find, it does keep a
history of past searches if you check that specific box. you could try
selecting everything in the box, deleting it, and typing in your search or,
if your feeling adventurous, press the control F combo and then press enter
to see where the search goes, assuming there's anything for it to find.

Yes.

Alt+D to move to the address bar, Control+A to select it, Control+C to
copy it to the clipboard. Now press F6 to move focus back to the web
page, you'll need to press it twice at least depending on how you have IE
set up.

Once the address bar is copied to the clipboard, you can paste it into

No, and I was about to mention that the option to right click something and

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Burn CD with Media Player

Well, the process is more straight forward.

I have tons of ram and a pretty fast processor, but WMP constantly hangs
on my system and I need to go into task manager to shut it down. I know
it's WMP because before it starts all is happy, and once it's gone, all
is well again. I'm not sure what's causing this, but it's a fairly
consistent occurrence for me.

Plus I don't find this version of WMP, version 11, to be as user friendly
as previous versions. I think there's a tutorial out there specifically
designed with keyboard commands and screen readers, but I've had good
luck with CDex, so that's what I'm sticking to for now.

As far as usability of CDex, You just download and use the accompanying
documentation to configure the program. It will also burn data CDs and a
few other types of files, but I haven't explored this further.

Then you put in a CD, start CDex, and it goes out to the net and finds
the CD in a huge data base. If there's more than one match, it shows you
what options are available. There's sometimes a data listing and a
regular music track listing.

You tell CDex which selection you want and it automatically fills in the
meta data with album name, artist, genre, release date and track listing.
these all appear in separate fields you can tab to and edit if necessary.

The tracks appear in a simple list view, so you can use arrow keys in
combination with control or shift to select the tracks you want or
Control A to select all tracks. Then you press F9 for MP3 or F10 for a
wave copy and the program does the rest.

Once in a great while, it can't find a match. This usually happens with
copies of CDs that aren't the original, like stuff you've burned on other
PCs.

cd the other day I got static so I thought maybe I should unload Jaws
and then reload after ripping and burning. But after some analysis it
had to do with my CD drive itself. Whenever I played a cd on player I
could hear some static. So then I tried to burn a disk and the CD kept
ejecting. I went into My Computer and the D drive was not even part of
the list of drives. So I thought perhaps a virus or something but did
not know. I rebooted and then the D drive was listed and no more
static. I burned some CDs and all sounds fine.
I think I will download this software and give it a whirl. But honestly
I felt thrilled that I finally understood WMP. I just learned by trial
and error. I ruined so many CDS.
I usually don't use CDs much because I can copy songs in MP3 format on a
thumb drive, Cf or SD card. I can plug in NLS digital player with songs
into my radio or use my Dell PDA and plug into radio to hear music. I
am happy that I learned how to burn because I'll use CDs while
travelling in car.

If you just want to center it, the control E instructions others have given

under a different menu option I'd have to go look up. I've got Word 2003,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Burn CD with Media Player

2010-10-11 Thread Lisa Belville

Well, the process is more straight forward.

I have tons of ram and a pretty fast processor, but WMP constantly hangs on
my system and I need to go into task manager to shut it down. I know it's
WMP because before it starts all is happy, and once it's gone, all is well
again. I'm not sure what's causing this, but it's a fairly consistent
occurrence for me.

Plus I don't find this version of WMP, version 11, to be as user friendly as
previous versions. I think there's a tutorial out there specifically
designed with keyboard commands and screen readers, but I've had good luck
with CDex, so that's what I'm sticking to for now.

As far as usability of CDex, You just download and use the accompanying
documentation to configure the program. It will also burn data CDs and a
few other types of files, but I haven't explored this further.

Then you put in a CD, start CDex, and it goes out to the net and finds the
CD in a huge data base. If there's more than one match, it shows you what
options are available. There's sometimes a data listing and a regular music
track listing.

You tell CDex which selection you want and it automatically fills in the
meta data with album name, artist, genre, release date and track listing.
these all appear in separate fields you can tab to and edit if necessary.

The tracks appear in a simple list view, so you can use arrow keys in
combination with control or shift to select the tracks you want or Control A
to select all tracks. Then you press F9 for MP3 or F10 for a wave copy and
the program does the rest.

Once in a great while, it can't find a match. This usually happens with
copies of CDs that aren't the original, like stuff you've burned on other
PCs.

Hi Lisa.

You can upgrade without any
worries.

The only thing you will recognize that gives a bit of frustration, is by
configuring the program settings, where there is different tabs, but you
can

only switch to them, by clicking on it with the Jaws cursor.

It is happening e.g. when registering and updating manually.

You can also experience that all the shield's are disabled after
installation, and you must activate them yourself, to be protected.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] My serial number for activating

2010-07-12 Thread Lisa Belville
Hi. if you've done a fresh install, it's actually asking for the
authorization code. This is a long series of numbers and not the serial
number.

It should be on the CD you got with the original purchase of JAWS. Or, if
you were using JAWS back in the day, the first version to have this code was
I think 6.0.

I had to do this last year and I had the same issue until I found the 6.0
CD. The auth code is written in Braille and presumably large print on the
inside of the CD holder.

I don't remember if I used the CD or if I just typed in the numbers, but
that was the code I needed to make the software stop acting like a demo.

Open Book has this capability.
When you are in Adobe, use Control P to print.
But instead of the default printer, you should find, Freedom Import
Printer.
When you choose this printer to print to, Open Book will start, scan the
pdf file as if it were a paper file in your scanner, and hopefully leave
you with readable text.

I have a very old version of Openbook, like version 6.0, I think. I
don't know if it had that capability.

So there is something there, it's just not visible to JAWS?

It's a graphic. Do you have some sort of scanning software that you can
use to scan it like kurzwell?

At 04:33 PM 7/10/2010, you wrote:

It doesn't work in this case because the choices associated with the check
boxes aren't labeled.

however, the yes or no answers do read fine as long as you're not in forms
mode. You just need to explore with the arrow keys or the paragraph
reading keys.

This is just me, but I only go into forms mode to input something in a
combo box or edit field and then I leave forms mode so I can explore the
rest of the page. This way I can find out what types of information is
needed and what types of commands I'll need to use in order to fill out

Re: [JAWS-Users] www.guidedog.org

2010-07-10 Thread Lisa Belville

Hi, Beverly.

I'm using JAWS 10 with Windows XP Home and IE 8. I'm having the same issue.

I needed to turn off forms mode and review the page with the JAWS cursor.

The choices corresponding to each check box are as follows:
1. Print; 2. Large Print; 3. Braille; 4. E-mail; 5. CD ROM.

There are three groupings of check boxes with each of these choices because
they're wanting your first, second, and then last resort choice.

However, I cannot interact with these checkboxes while out of forms mode. I
can go back into forms mode and find this part of the form and check the
corresponding box as long as I know which choice I want.

It would be nice to give their web master a technical reason this isn't
working with JAWS. I noticed that JAWS refers to all forms as mouse over
links, regardless of the type of form, i.e. edit or check box.

I'm a GDF grad, so I'd be happy to pass the info along as soon as I can give
a specific reason for the inaccessible forms.

Did you try finding edit fields after you pressed enter on the My account
mouseover link? If it weren't for that tiny navigation click, I wouldn't
have known anything happened because I don't get the verbal progress

Using JAWS 9, when I hit enter on "MY Account", nothing happens, and I
don't get the user ID and Password edit fields. And accessing the Context
menu, the Forward" option is unavailable, which means that this link was
not activated. I wonder if the fact that I already have an accountis
somehow preventing me from activating the My Account link. Maybe I'll
try my demo version of JAWS 10 or System Access to Go to see if that makes

Hi. I'm using JAWS 10 with IE 8, but give this a try.

I pressed enter on my account. I heard the navigation click in IE eight,
so I knew something had changed on the page. you're correct that there's
not anything obvious for JAWS to load. But, on a hunch, I went to the
top of the page and pressed E in case there was an enter field. Bingo.
There are two enter fields, one for user name and one for password. The
fields are labeled correctly, but they are seen as mouse over links for
JAWS. I was able to both press enter and left click on these fields to
activate forms mode.

I couldn't go any further because I don't have an account.

HTH and good luck.

Greetings listers. Recently, I created an account with Page Plus
Cellular, a prepaid wireless provider that offers some of the cheapest
rates around. In order to review my account, I need to access the log
in page by activating the "My Account" link on the PPC home page. When
I arrow down to "My Account", JAWS 9 announces "MY Account mouse over"
but does not announce "link". When I hit Enter on this object, nothing
happens. When I press Insert-Control-Enter, JAWS announces "content has
changed", but again, I do not get the log in page. I have tried every
keystroke combination I can think of to no avail. I can't find any
other link to the log in page. Am I missing something, or is this link
set up in such a way that JAWS can't activate it? For anyone who's
interested , check out the following web page, arrow down to "My
Account", and see if you can figure out how to activate it to bring up
the log in page. Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Unable to Access Web Site Log In Page

2010-05-05 Thread Lisa Belville

Hi. I'm using JAWS 10 with IE 8, but give this a try.

I pressed enter on my account. I heard the navigation click in IE eight, so
I knew something had changed on the page. you're correct that there's not
anything obvious for JAWS to load. But, on a hunch, I went to the top of
the page and pressed E in case there was an enter field. Bingo. There are
two enter fields, one for user name and one for password. The fields are
labeled correctly, but they are seen as mouse over links for JAWS. I was
able to both press enter and left click on these fields to activate forms
mode.

I couldn't go any further because I don't have an account.

HTH and good luck.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Unable to Access Web Site Log In Page

Greetings listers. Recently, I created an account with Page Plus
Cellular, a prepaid wireless provider that offers some of the cheapest
rates around. In order to review my account, I need to access the log in
page by activating the "My Account" link on the PPC home page. When I
arrow down to "My Account", JAWS 9 announces "MY Account mouse over" but
does not announce "link". When I hit Enter on this object, nothing
happens. When I press Insert-Control-Enter, JAWS announces "content has
changed", but again, I do not get the log in page. I have tried every
keystroke combination I can think of to no avail. I can't find any other
link to the log in page. Am I missing something, or is this link set up
in such a way that JAWS can't activate it? For anyone who's interested ,
check out the following web page, arrow down to "My Account", and see if
you can figure out how to activate it to bring up the log in page.
Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Desperate for Yahoogroups tutorial

2010-04-24 Thread Lisa Belville

Alan,

I moderate a list that was moved from a private server using the Mailman
software to yahoogroups. Yes, Yahoo's group pages are not the most user
friendly, but it's more due to the layout of the pages rather than
accessibility. Yahoo is all web based, so it's a matter of knowing your
browser and your screen reader of choice, as well as a bit of memorization
when it comes to negotiating some of the pages specific to mods.

They just added an audio code that allows anyone with the proper mod
privileges to add members without going through the captcha or invite
process, so that part is at least accessible.

What version of JAWS and what browser are you using? I might be able to
help if you have specific questions.

If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Desperate for Yahoogroups tutorial

Hello Friends,
I have succeeded in setting up a yahoogroups list for our
United States Braille Chess Association,
because our Topica list no longer responds to any commands, and we have
not been able to contact their support department after several months.

Yes, it is set up , pesky captures and such, but it was with a great
amount of assistance from others, and I need to learn how to manage it
myself, and also the people I have assigned as "moderators" need to learn
all about the different functions.

Yahoogroups is not what I would call a JAWS friendly program.
And I would compare it to learning Microsoft Word or Excel!
Word and Excel are easier in my opinion!
At least they have command keys, and menu bars!

Can anyone please help me find a "Tutorial" for learning how to manage a
yahoogroups list?

We would even be willing to pay for it.

Can anyone also give me Kathy, oh I forgot her last name, the lady that
does the "Special Access" training, and produces "tutorials email address
so I can find out if she can assist us?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

With Best Regards,
Alan

Re: [JAWS-Users] Combo boxes

2010-04-03 Thread Lisa Belville
this sounds weird, but have you tried not using the virtual cursor and just
using the JAWS cursor?

Maybe it's just me, but I'm finding some web sites that don't show me things
like the contents of a shopping cart unless I disable the virtual cursor an
use the tab and the JAWS cursor. It's like being back in the mid nineties
again, but it gets the job done.

This doesn't always work. Like RJ, I notice that when you open some combo
boxes and press Alt-down arrow, the first item is immediately selected and
you are taken out of forms mode before you have a chance to arrow down to
the item you actually want. I haven't figured out a way around this
glitch myself, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try opening it by first turning forms mode on and then using Alt plus
down arrow. You should hear something about the combo box being open.
Now arrow down to the choice you want. If it's the type of combo box I'm
thinking of, you can just press tab to move away from that box and it
should open the page with whatever choice you selected.

Isn't that only for a temporary change? I seem to remember trying and
giving up because settings would revert to their former position once I alt

press p until you hear personalized web settings and press enter. the
options are presented in a tree view, so just move to the setting for
forms with the letter F.

Hi All;

If I want to save particular settings through Verboscity / Jaws Options
for
individual websites using XPSP3 Home, how would I go about doing this?
For
example; I want to use the Auto Forms On with just a couple of websites
and

no others. I read somewhere saving settings for certain websites can be
done and I thought what I read was through the Verboscity menu. All
help

will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much. Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Saving settings in IE8 for individual websites

2010-03-29 Thread Lisa Belville
Actually, the JAWS help does a good job at this. While in the dialog for
personalizing web sites, you can tab back and forth from the tree view to a
read only field that describes the function of each item and what the
various options do.

This isn't like the Windows Help system, so no F6 is necessary, just tab and
shift tab should get you what you want.
