[JAWS-Users] punctuation success!

Hi everyone,
I just set my punctuation to some, and now Jaws is reading email and web
addresses correctly. Apparently, I had somehow set it to none without
realizing it (smile) Thanks for your help.

[JAWS-Users] Punctuation Settings Reminder

2017-10-13 Thread Mike B.
This is a note on the difference between changing punctuation settings in
Jaws quick settings, Insert + V, & customize punctuation in the Settings
Center default all applications
/ configuration manager. They work backwards from one another.

When setting punctuation in Jaws quick settings, this controls the amount of
punctuation JAWS will speak / recognize. The default setting is most. To
hear less
punctuation spoken you would select some or none.

When making changes in the customize punctuation list, this basically tells
Jaws how much of a selected punctuation mark to ignore. If you do not want
Jaws to speak/recognize a particular punctuation mark you want to choose the
" all " selection. You will have 4 radio buttons to arrow up or down
through. They are none, some, most, & all. In these selections they work
backwards than what you would think. For example; If you choose " none "
for the dollar sign, Jaws will speak / recognize every dollar sign in
whatever you are reading. On the other hand, if you choose the " all "
radio button, Jaws will not speak / recognize any dollar signs.

Summary: In short the Jaws quick settings tells Jaws what punctuation to
recognize / speak, & in the Settings Center default all applications /
Customize Punctuation settings, tells Jaws what punctuation to ignore / not
speak. Hence, they work backwards from each other.

Hope this helps some of you understand the differences between the 2
punctuation setting options.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi All,

Assigning A Keystroke To Adjust Punctuation On The Fly by our esteemed
leader, David Ferrin:

1. Press, Insert + F2, to open the Jaws Manager.
2. Go to Keyboard Manager and press enter.
3. Navigate to Default, & then tab 1 time to get into the list of options.
4. In the Default keyboard manager list navigate to Set Punctuation Level
If it says none. That means there has not been a keystroke assigned.
5. Press the Alt key to open the menues, & right arrow to Action. Then down
arrow to Add Keystroke, & press enter. Or press control + A which is the
shortcut for asigning a keystroke.
6. Insert a keystroke combination like control + dash for example. If the
combination is already being used for another command jaws will tell you.
Doing this in the Default Keyboard Manager, allows this keystroke to be used
in all aplications.
7. Tab to the Okay button, press the spacebar, then a dialogue will open
asking
if you are sure you want to modify the default JKM. Press the spacebar on
the Yes option.

Now, every time you press the control + dash keystroke it changes the
punctuation level. So press the control + dash keystroke until you hear
the punctuation level you want.

If you ever want to change or remove the keystroke, simply repeat the above
steps.

There is any problem if you set as you are writing and under options/voices
set to none, no punctuation's should be read, but in version 17 it isn't
working properly and I informed FS about this.
For example I am having in customize punctuation set all and voices none,
but for example in IE and FF it is reading each punctuation's like as :, $.

Thank you Ted. You are right. However, before I saw your reply, I called
Freedomscientific and they said that Word 2007 sometimes turns these things

I had to have an open document and then Alt F and up arrow to options and
then Tab until I heard something with the word all in it and uncheck it.

Thanks again!

In earlier versions of Jaws I could open notepad and set how punctuations

change this while in default mode. Why was this changed?

If we can't look at ourselves, and ask, why? then where does the learning

I have spent a while looking into this, and the only way I can find for you
to do what you wish is when you are in OE, or which ever program you are in,
go to the JAWS window and hit ALT, hit ENTER on Options, hit ENTER on

Try with a different speech synthesizer. Or, you can customize this
punctuation. First, set it to MOST or ALL. then, open the Settings Center
and, in the search field, type punctu or similar. In the list of result
that come up will be customize punctuation. You can press F6 on it to bring
up the dialogue; and change the button to ALL. (This has the effect of
silencing all speaking of the quote sign.) Close, and save changes.

Try with a different speech synthesizer. Or, you can customize this
punctuation. First, set it to MOST or ALL. then, open the Settings
Center and, in the search field, type punctu or similar. In the list of
result that come up will be customize punctuation. You can press F6 on
it to bring up the dialogue; and change the button to ALL. (This has the
effect of silencing all speaking of the quote sign.) Close, and save

I have spent a while looking into this, and the only way I can find for

ENTER on Voices, and TAB over to punctuation level, and hit up or down

See the change in subject line, which more accurately refelects what you
say you want. Press JAWSKey+v to get into what used to be called JAWS
Verbosity, now known as Quick Settings. Search for or type punctuation.
Now you can change the level with up/down arrow keys.

Another way is to change your Voice profile in the JAWS basics | Voices
| Voice Adjustment dialogue.

the Customize Punctuation dialogue, to which i referred earlier, allows
you to change or choose which punctuation marks are unspoken and how
often, at the chosen high level. It woirks, and it also works when any
or all other reasonable measures fail. By design in JAWS13 the changes
you make in these dialogues are automatically saved to their
approrpriate settings file(s).

Joni, John here.
I'm able to create different punctuation settings for each of my programs.
Hmmm! That's really odd. Oh sure, you can change punctuation in the
Default and it will effect every program in which individual settings have
not been made.
But as far as I know, you can create settings for each program. You'd
almost have to with something like Excel.
I never imagined that there would be an issue. But I believe that the way
to make a permanent change is to create a separate profile for each program.
There are specific steps to do that.
As I'm sure you know, part of any voice profile is how punctuation is
processed. If Miriam's settings aren't holding, I suggest that she create
separate voice profiles for each different program, save them and then make
that particular profile the one which is used when the softwear is called
up.
I can dig up those steps for creating separate voice profiles if anyone
wants them. I got them directly from Freedom.

Miriam, as an alternative to Quick Settings, I opened the Settings Center
with insert and 6 on the numbers row. I typed punctuation into the edit box
and it said it could only be modified through the default setting, which
would then I assume affect all programs, not just the one you want. My
settings using quick Settings have seemed to hold for me, so I don't know
what to suggest.

Maybe someone with more experience and expertise with JAWS can help you sort
it out. I am curious now also to know if punctuation an be set for each
program or only as an across the board default setting.

Miriam, you should be able to set punctuation to some, most, all or none
through the Quick Settings in JAWS 13.

Open this with the insert key and v. When it opens you will be in the edit
box. In the edit box start typing the word punctuation. When JAWS says
punctuation, arrow down once. You can cycle through the various punctuation
levels by hitting the spacebar. When you get the choice you want, then hit
the tab key to okay and hit enter. You should be able to do this in any
program you have open. I have not paid much attention to punctuation on my
personal computer, so I don't know how reliable JAWS is once this setting is
changed, but that is how to change it in any given program.

It seems to me that in the good old days Jaws 10 and before, I had jaws
settings which allowed me to hear full punctuation in word and no
punctuation when I read emails or articles from the web. I was working in
those days and writing adoption home study reports and I needed to hear all
that punctuation, but I didn't need to hear it if I was reading an article

everyone's experience? Am I doing tomsething wrong?

Open this with the insert key and v. When it opens you will be in
the edit box. In the edit box start typing the word
punctuation. When JAWS says punctuation, arrow down once. You can
cycle through the various punctuation levels by hitting the
spacebar. When you get the choice you want, then hit the tab key to
okay and hit enter. You should be able to do this in any program
you have open. I have not paid much attention to punctuation on my
personal computer, so I don't know how reliable JAWS is once this
setting is changed, but that is how to change it in any given program.

It seems to me that in the good old days Jaws 10 and before, I had jaws
settings which allowed me to hear full punctuation in word and no
punctuation when I read emails or articles from the web. I was working in
those days and writing adoption home study reports and I needed to hear all
that punctuation, but I didn't need to hear it if I was reading an article
or an email. Now, it seems that even if punctuation is set to none, I
still hear it when reading emails and articles from the web. Is this
everyone's experience? Am I doing tomsething wrong?

2012-01-27 Thread John Justice

Miriam,
I believe that you may have inadvertently changed the settings in your Jaws
13 default. That program is used whenever no particular arrangements have
been made for a particular program. For example, if you are using a web
browser such as Internet Explorer, if no profile for that program has been
created, then the Jaws 13 default will apply. If you have the punctuation
set to All, then you will hear it and no subsequent setting will hold unless
you create an independent profile for that particular application.
This is what the reps at Freedom Scientific told me and they gave me a set
of instructions for doing that.
I'd appreciate it if anyone reading this would confirm what I'm saying,
here.
I don't recommend changing that default for any reason.

Thanks Rose, that pointed me in the right direction.

Miriam, after reading the what's new section on JAWS 13 for the Quick
Settings feature, this is how it sounds like things should work. While in
the program you are interested in, open Quick Settings with insert v. Type
the word punctuation. Arrow down when JAWS says punctuation and enter. Now
hit the applications menu key, which is just to the left of the right
control key. There are 3 choices for a persistence level in that menu.
Enter on the save the settings choice. Now hit the space bar on punctuation
to get the level you want. Hit enter and, hopefully, your setting will be
saved this time.

I did not remember that there were 2 steps involved, the persistence level
choice and then the amount of punctuation choice.

I received the following directions from someone on another list, for
changing the punctuation settings. These apply to all applications,
apparently, and they appear to be permanent. They are different from what
most of you have suggested.
Insert J
O for options
V for voices
V again for voice settings
Tab to punctuation.
Arrow through choices. I arrowed up to find none.
When you find the setting you want, tab to OK. Then press enter.
But my computer made a rude sound when I pressed enter so I guess that
wasn't acceptable.

I just did this a few minutes ago and the setting seems to apply to all
programs. I assume this is permanent, I hope, I can then use quick settings
if I want punctuation for writing a word document.

Miriam,
I believe that you may have inadvertently changed the settings in your Jaws

If you listen to What's new for Jaws 13, there is a setting that will cause
your settings to be saved or not saved for each program, not sure how it was
titled, just remember reading it and apparently I figured it out because I
can change settings in every program and retain them.

Joni,

The guy who helps me with my computer had told me that there is only one
default setting which is for all programs and he set it to none for
punctuation, but that certainly didn't work. It just seems that I shouldn't
have to change the setting every time I move in or out of a program. But at

Re: [JAWS-Users] Punctuation, jaws 13 win7, also magic 11

2012-01-26 Thread John Justice

Joni,

The guy who helps me with my computer had told me that there is only one
default setting which is for all programs and he set it to none for
punctuation, but that certainly didn't work. It just seems that I shouldn't
have to change the setting every time I move in or out of a program. But at
least, now I know what to do for a temporary fix.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Punctuation

Hi,

I just installed the latest version of Jaws13 and I am having a little
problems with the Jaws setting center.

I want to change some of the punctuation so that I don't have to hear all
the special characters such as colon, left brackets, right brackets and so
on.

The problem is that when I went into the Jaws setting center, and search for
punctuation and press enter to go to the list, I ended up out of the Jaws
setting center and therefore I cannot make any changes.

I would greatly be appreciative if someone can tell me what I am doing
wrong? I don't think that Dr. Phil is available for Thanksgiving and I am
losing my appetite for that big bird! Many thanks in advance and I want to
wish everyone on the list especially the managing team a very blessed and
happy Thanksgiving! Don't eat too much turkey!

Hi David,

Thanks for your quick reply. I seem to remember something about using
the spacebar instead of the enter key.

I have another problem and perhaps you can help?

I set up my hot key for Jaws13 with CTRL+ALT+J and it doesn't bring up Jaws.

I have removed that shortcut previously from Jaws12 before I set it
up for Jaws13.

Any ideas why it is not working? As usual any help will be greatly appreciated.

Take care.

Howdy Lennie,

The hell with Doctor Phil, he's never around when you need him! damn quack!
LOL LOL

We'll get your punctuation issue straightened out. This is a different way
than what David suggested.
1. Go into your Jaws options, Insert + J, if you run Jaws from the system
tray. Press the letter h, arrow up to Startup Wizard, press enter. If you
don't run Jaws from the system tray, alt + tab to your Jaws window, press
the alt key, press the letter H, for help. Or, after pressing the alt
key, right arrow to help press enter.
2. Arrow up to the Startup Wizard press enter or, just press the letter Z,
after pressing enter on help.
3. Now tab a couple of times you should be on punctuation. Arrow up /
down to highlight your punctuation level of choice.
4. Now tab through okay your way out. You will have a few different times
to okay because you will be going through other dialogue boxes of other
options. Have a great Thanksgiving. Take care.

[JAWS-Users] punctuation in jfw 12 latest build

Hi,

Has anyone experienced punctuation being echoed in latest build of jfw
twice? Let me explain. Lets say I right a href=mailto:kimsans...@aol.com
mailto:kimsans...@aol.com%3eemail email me!/a. Ok, when I read that
back the equals was echoed twice. As in a href equals equals.

Ok, I went into the setting center and checked the level for the equals and
it was set at none. However, I changed it to all and when I read it back the
equals sign spoke once. Can someone provide an explination on why it would
echo once at all and twice at none?

Good Monday to all.

Vicky,

The elipsis is only read as such when punctuation level is set to All, at
least that is the default behavior.

If you are still hearing elipsis, you can go into the customize punctuation

Customize punctuation is only available in the default configuration file

Re: [JAWS-Users] Punctuation during a Say All

2011-01-29 Thread Flor Lynch

Read the JAWS help on this topic a few times, or read this a few times.

You have the JAWS general punctuation settings, [JAWS voices, individual
voice adjustment, etc.], on one hand, and the Default Configuration
manager Customize Punctuation on the other. Customize Punctuation - Set
Options, [alt-s, p], allows for the muting of the speaking of particular
punctuation signs - up to and at the level you have set the JAWS
speaking of punctuation in general to. There is also an advanced...
dialogue in the Customize Punctuation dialogue, where you can further
refine where or how JAWS speaks or mutes a punctuation sign.

Thus, in order to silence a punctuation sign, in all or most SayAll
situations, it's better to have the general JAWS punctuation set to All
or Most; and then to change the radiobutton setting for the punctuation
sign in the Customize Punctuation dialogue to All (or Most). Such
settings will then hold when you reduce the general punctuation via the
JAWS Voice Adjustment dialogue.

Is it possible in Jaws 11, while reading with the Say All command,
to have absolutely no punctuation announced?
Those pesky ellipsis or sometimes quote signs can really break up the
flow of the dialog!

Many thanks for any ideas! Vicky

Re: [JAWS-Users] punctuation setting for the period

2011-01-28 Thread Flor Lynch

Kimsan,

Not sure why that is. My latest JAWS12 and Eloquence says DotDotDot, if
punctuation is set to all, or some, and for a proper ellipsis it says
ellipsis. Now, do you mean that when you arrow character by character it
says period period period? (that is the default.) because, in SayAll, it
should say DotDotDot.

Hi Kimsan;

To do what you are wanting to do, I think you will have to do this in the

Insert 4 in Jaws gives a common list of symbols. For those not on the list,
you need to enable the numpad and hold down the alt key and key in the Ascii

Re: [JAWS-Users] punctuation frustration

2009-08-22 Thread Tim
As far as I know, this is not possible. You have to set the verbosity
punctuation settings to all in order for JAWS to read periods at the end of
sentences. Of course, if you set it to all, it will say ellipsis at the end
of any sentence where this sign occurs. It shouldn't read this sign as
period period period or dot dot dot. If JAWS is set to read these signs, it
should only say elipsis. JAWS will say dot dot dot whenever there is a bunch
of periods in a row. You will often find this while reading the table of
contents in a book for example. This is the same for any letter or symbol.
JAWS will only repeat it three times if it is used excessively.

Hi Kimsan,

I tried it to make sure before writing the message to you. In my verbosity
punctuation is set at most and I hear the periods when the level is set at
most for them. I set the ellipsis level at all. I hear the periods but not
the ellipsis symbol. Again though, if someone uses three periods instead of
the ellipsis symbol then the periods will still be spoken. Check your
verbosity in the program to see if the punctuation level is at the most
level after setting the levels in the customize punctuation dialog.

Take care.

Hey Kimsan,

The ellipsis is a symbol used to truncate words or sentences. If you set
the level of punctuation for the ellipsis at all and then set the level
for periods at most you should hear periods and not ellipsis using the
default most level. If three periods are used instead of an ellipsis
symbol then you will still hear the dot dot dot. The ellipsis is found at
the bottom of the list in the customize punctuation dialog in the
configuration manager. You can insert an ellipsis using the JAWS key with
the 4 on the numbers row of the keyboard.

Take care.

When you've entered the Config manager, press alt-s then p, then press
JAWSKey+F1, and we get:

Select the punctuation symbol to modify from this list. To change how
JAWS speaks the

symbol, press F2. To change the level at which JAWS speaks
the symbol, press SPACEBAR. The symbol is always announced
at and above the specified punctuation level. For example,
setting a symbol to none means that JAWS always speaks it.
In addition, if you want a symbol to not be spoken, you must first
set the default punctuation to Most or lower and then, set the level
for the character to be silenced to All. These changes only
affect the active synthesizer.

Therefore, All means Silence All. None means silence None; but you must
first change the default punctuation to Most or All. Why? Another JAWS
mystery. tune in to the next installment! .

manager) you get a new configuration dialog, press enter to create one for
the current application.
If you don't, then the one which exists for say Notepad or Ms-Word for
example will load automatically when you do the following.
1. Open the Config Manager with jawsKey plus Numrow6.
2. Press alt plus the letter S followed by the letter P to open the
Customize punctuation dialog.
3. The first item in the list is Exclaim and is set to all.
Tab once and you have a group of punctuation level radio buttons with the
all radio button already selected which says what level of punctuation
category that symol is assigned to.
4. Press downarrow for none and press enter.
5. Save your changes with Control plus s and alt plus F4 closes the manager.
Hope this does the trick and there is a Restore Default button in that same
dialog if you don't like the results.

Jon

Hi, No I haven't turned it off in the Configuration Manager, because I
thought that there my only option was to alter the default. I still want
to have the keyboark echo a punctuation key, when I type it. Or if I am
going across character by character, checking my typing. I just don't want
to hear any punctuation, when I'm reading in a Say All situation. Do you
have any sugestions for that spacific situation?

I would be very greatful!

Re: [JAWS-Users] punctuation

2008-12-15 Thread Brian Lee

Hello Kate,

You can open the configuration manager and choose the customize
punctuation choice from the settings menu. In the resultant dialog box
there will be a list of all punctuation recognized by JAWS and the level at
which it starts to be announced. You can use spacebar on each entry in the
list to cycle between the four choices of all, most, some and none.
When changes are made use tab key to move to the OK button and depress it.
Use CTRL-S to save changes. Of course if you want changes to be made to the
default JAWS configuration file then load it first when you go into the
configuration manager by using shift with CTRL and D.

Take care.
