Re: KR> Flight Training

2017-01-24 Thread Dan via KRnet
Hi,

I am new to the KR list. This is great information for me. I am considering
moving from the Yankee that I currently own as well as an Avid Flyer which is
even lighter on the controls and a tail dragger to a KR2. Sounds like I might
not have too much difficulty making the switch.

Thanks,
Dan

I would highly recommend the Yankee. I owned one for years and it would be a
much better choice than an RV as they are too easy to fly. The Yankee is
fairly quick on the controls, climbs like an anemic kid with a cold but does
act a lot like a KR except during landing where it sinks like a rock instead of
floating!!

An F86 would be ideal. If that's not available I'd go for one of the lower
numbered RV's, i.e.
6,7,8. The 10 is too big and heavy. I've heard the Yankee might be good. If
you haven't flown much lately I'd suggest you get 10 hours in 30 days in
anything then go for a ride in something slick and light on the controls like
the RV series. First flight in an experimental is not the way to get current
again.

Biggest thing to remember is rest you arm on your leg or similar, fly with your
wrist, relax, and fly it like any other airplane. It will be quick and lighter
on the controls than most any other airplane but push the stick forward for
down, back for up, left for left wing down, etc.. I can tell you got the idea
already

I designed the speed brake and flaps to operate separately. Travel time on the

you can see in the gathering photos.
And yes, the plane is still for sale. Lots of tire kickers.

KR> On slime and nitrogen in tires.

2016-09-12 Thread Dan Branstrom
A note for those using slime in their tires. It is fine on tires that
use tubes, but if you really want to piss off your local tire dealer,
use it on tubeless tires. It makes a real mess on the wheel and
difficult to work on.

The reasons for using nitrogen to fill tires is that it doesn't migrate
through rubber as fast as air, it expands and contracts less than air
does when the tire temperature changes, and it contains less water.

Don't let being a "purist" stand in the way of logic and making a good
decision. The continental will go 200+ with accessories and neither it or
the Lycombing are suited for the KR1.

I seem to recall Jab's had some early problems but if those have been

KR> Parachutes

2016-05-11 Thread Dan Branstrom
Some considerations:
First, I'm not a big fan of Cirrus' system on its planes. Why? First,
let me point out that the descent rate on a Cirrus under a canopy is
more than a (What is now called) Cessna TTx in a glide. It is for good
reason that the Cirrus has seats that are designed to cushion a high
vertical G load in a crash or parachute deployment. A KR has no such
cushion or crush area under the pilot.

Generally, it is the vertical component of a crash that is a high factor
in survivability when crashing on a relatively smooth surface. Ya go
straight in, you're gonna die. If you don't have a crush area under you,
you may end up a lot shorter.

Next, the Cirrus has a definite deployment envelope. There have been
several crashes, if I recall correctly, where the airplane was found in
one spot and the chute in another because, obviously, the chute was
deployed at high speed and simply ripped away from the fuselage. There
have also been crashes where someone deployed the chute too close to the
ground, perhaps to stop a pattern altitude stall/spin event.

I think it's good that Cirrus has apparently started training for
deployment of the chute, because the fatality rate for Cirrus was
actually higher than for comparable aircraft. Perhaps it was a
psychological over-dependence on the chute or a misunderstanding of the
deployment envelope. The Cirrus is a slick airplane, and it is easy to
exceed the deployment speed with the nose pointed down.

Another thing to consider when wearing a chute is the ability to get out
of the plane. Will your canopy open enough to get out? It is for good
reason that aerobatic planes usually have a way of ridding the canopy so
that the person can leave the plane. In the service, we didn't have
ejection seats, (that tells you how long ago it was) but we did have the
ability to blow the canopy open. I knew one guy that had a midair in the
pattern (1200' agl, if I recall) and he made it out successfully, but he
acted instantly. The other pilot didn't, and died.

Have you practiced getting out of your plane as quickly as possible?
It's easy to get tangled in seat belts and headset wires, and, in a KR,
you're sitting with your legs under the instrument panel. Even if you
roll the plane upside down to fall out, what can hang you up?

Remember that we only hear stories from survivors. The people who didn't
make it out, or died can't tell us how wonderful their chute was.

I have wondered about him myself. I had not spoke to him in several years
and a while back I tried searching for him, but old number and email did not
work. Did some searching on the Vans Airforce site and last I found is that
he was selling Black Magic so not sure that he still owns it. Not sure if
he is still flying anymore either. Let me know if anyone knows how to get
in touch with him. Great guy and is certainly missed here.

KR> Facet fuel pump flare?

2016-04-23 Thread Dan Heath
I have hooked up many facet pumps on both my first and second KR2. I always
used the standard AN flared tube or AN fittings and they all fit perfectly.
I bought my facets from either Wicks or AS, but I am not sure that would
matter at all.

KR> VW type 1 questions - best reliability

2016-04-23 Thread Dan Heath
I had a GPASC 2180 back before they realized that the oversized valves were
useless and a detriment. The replacements that I got from GPASC, were from
EMPI. If you want good heads, get the ones manufactured under license from
VW, note, that is NOT WW. The ones that I got were from Brazil with
standard sized valves and never had another problem with them. However, my
problem was not the same as yours. The exhaust valves in my heads were
sinking into the head. The reason was because EMPI makes them with plugs in
the valve recesses, to make it easy to remove after casting. This, plus the
oversize, causes the exhaust to have less meat around the valve seat, than
is necessary to remove the heat.

So, the message is get the right heads with standard valves and keep them
cool.

KR> W & B

2016-04-02 Thread Dan Heath
I used the firewall because I figured that it was the least likely point to
change, like tip of spinner that may change every time your old spinner
cracks up and get's replaced. I don't think the spread sheet really cares
if the numbers you put in are positive or negative. It will always give you
the right answer if the formula is correct. Several W & B sheets are
available on this site:

Someone mentioned using the firewall to keep the numbers positive. That

The WHLW50S1.25 using the WHLAXLE2 axle assembly will work with the 11x4-5 tire
and tube. The WHLAXLE2 uses 4 0.25 bolts on 1.25 centers.

KR> Will Tracy O'Brien wheels work fine with heavier plane?

2016-03-13 Thread Dan Heath
The one thing I may have done wrong, was to use the larger diameter tubing.
With my Matco, I use the 1/8" line and it is perfect. Tracy sent it with the
brakes, but I had never used a small line like that. Also, my existing tubing
was very old. Thus why I said that it could have been from a bad installation
on my part.

Always had a problem with my GPS in my KR-2 not operating on aircraft power,
but ok on internal batteries. Always made a note to trouble shoot that when I
got a chance. Did not need GPS on first flights over the airport. Today while
hooking up power for the new flap actuator, I found 2 each AN970-3 fender
washers on the power control printed circuit board. One was laying loose on
top of some components; no problem there, but some bouncing around could create
some excitement. The second washer was wedged firmly between a grounded brace
part of the power panel and the output terminal on the GPS power toggle switch.
So, every time GPS power was switched on, the electronic circuit breaker would
trip and no power for the GPS. Removed the offending washers and all is well.
Have no idea how these two big washers got there. Stuff happens.

So, have possibly toned down the level of excitement for subsequent flights.

A smooth 6 cylinder Corvair with an Ellison is probably the better choice it
appears since a number of KR people have made that decision along the way.

Just got mine from Todd's last month and it's fantastic. I have not detected

happy with the quality and workmanship. Be patient with your order. Todd

You're supposed to use stop nuts on the back of the spar but good luck keeping
resin out of them.

KR> Aileron spar

2016-01-02 Thread Dan Prichard
I had a few nuts get blocked with resin and flox after attaching the aileron
spar to the wing. After the resin set I used a 3/32" drill bit to cut through
the bulk of the overfill then used a tap to clean out the threads. Minimal
amount of effort.

Again, Merry Christmas and I pray that you all have a happy and prosperous

At 876 lbs empty I'd be looking for a bigger engine than a VW - especially
at that altitude and with those temps. Also, I'm pretty sure 3,000 rpm is a
bit low - most of the VW guys seem to go for around 3,400 - 3,600.

No indicator. I also found that it worked for me, the best, all the way up,

always worked perfectly. The wiring would be different for each

KR> Bleeding brakes

2015-11-08 Thread Dan Heath
I highly recommend putting the fuel in the wings and leave out the header
tank and make the deck removable.

At one time before I did that on the Black Bird, I got under there and was
afraid that I was not going to be able to get back out and no one was at the
airport that day.

After that and other bad experiences trying to work under there, I would
NEVER build a plane without a removable deck.

On the brake bleeding issue, I also swapped out the masters with the built
in reservoir for those with a remote reservoir that is clear, so you can see
exactly how much fluid you have at any time.

Paul,

I am just curious, when did you order your intake manifold from WW. It might
be a good idea to ask him to bring it to CC in Barnwell and I can pick it up
there and see to it that you get it. I know you come down this way quite often.

That would be better than your having to borrow one, until WW can ship yours to
you, then you would have to return the one you borrowed.

Just saying, since you have already purchased it from WW, I am sure he has it
ready for you.

Does anyone have a WW intake manifol that would fit on a KR that I can borrow

I have a complete retract gear system for a KR 1 or 2 to include wheels and
cable brakes. All mounted 30 years ago. If you're interested contact me @
dprich01 at comcast.net for pics and details. Also have an A-65 with motor

I let my DAR know, or ask someone at your FSDO. They will tell you, but I
do believe that an engine change will do that. In fact, if I remember
correctly, I went back to phase 1 when I changed from the VW to the Corvair
on the BlackBird.

Interesting...I never thought you ever would go back to Phase 1. So let me
pose a question. If that is true and you make a major change like going
from a VW to a Corvair do you have to go back to Phase 1?

KR> Phase 1 and Phase 2 flight testing

2015-10-23 Thread Dan Heath
You are going to get 40 hours for phase 1, and unless I am mistaken, you
never get out of phase 2, unless you go back to phase 1 due to major changes
to the aircraft.

You should perform all the basic tests in phase 1 during the 40 hours that
you will have to fly within the area that you are given by your DAR.

This is standard for most experimental aircraft.

2015-09-28 Thread Dan Prichard
Are you using the new airfoil? If you are, then your rudder post will be 34" s
above the top longeron or about 44" total. After discussions with Mark L. I
raise my rudder post up to 40"s making the rudder 50"s overall. I also extended
the horizontal surface outward. Full width is now 84"s. Elevator has remained
the same depth. I'm sure there is some argument about width vs depth because
the square inch factor would probably be the same. Wider and narrower made more
sense to me in relation to pitch input.

Having small local/regional meets will work great. All YOU have to do is to
set it up and DO it. As Larry has described, hosting a "Gathering" is a lot
of work. I once set up a small meet in Florida, and I had the only KR
there. You want it, DO it. I keep reading about people wanting this, over
many years, and yet, NO ONE has DONE it. There is nothing stopping you from
doing this.

On my VW with the Zenith carb that had the choke removed I put in primer
nozzles on only the two back cylinders. I welded small blocks of steel on
the intake tubes and tapped them for the nozzles about an inch from the
heads. It worked great. I would think that only two on the Corvair would
be enough also. Might not start quite as fast as Mark's though.

I am going to be cutting a thin line in the wing so I can lay electrical
cable to the position lights and strobes at the tips of the wings. The
person I bought the aircraft from didn't run any electrical through the
wings, so I'm thinking of using a dermal to cut a narrow deep line so I can
lay the cord without having to dig through the spar and what not. Then I
plan on filling in the hole with foam and re-applying fiberglass.

It was suggested that instead of placing it on the leading edge, that I
place the cut under the wing.

I believe that is the way most RV builders do it. Vans has a kit for that.

To pressure test a tank you use a pressure gauge connected to a T fitting
screwed in to the tank.
One of the T connections to the tank
Another to the pressure gauge
The third to the valve
Open the valve to allow air to go in to the tank Close the valve and make
sure the pressure doesnt drop after a set time say 24 hours.
Open valve to vent the tank and then unscrew the T.

KR> Glassing Tiger Gear legs

2015-09-14 Thread Dan Prichard
I did not thin them out. I dialed in the flex I thought would work by reducing
the width. I read of an earlier KR2 which the builder simply cut the leg down
the middle. He said they worked just fine. His KR was a 900 # plane. From that
point I knew my plane was going towards the 1250 # GW range. Applied some
simple math and there you go. The flex and deflection seam right. If I find
them to be to stiff I'll cut the down. If it's not stiff enough I'll use the
other set of legs I bought and start again. At that price you can experiment
some.

KR> KR Gathering

2015-09-10 Thread Dan Prichard
I want to put everyone at ease. I'm not out of pocket on any thing concerning
the gathering. I did use my money along with the funds sent by Larry to keep
the gathering machine moving forward. I never felt at risk or uneasy about the
funds and I was confident the good KR folks would cover the expenses. Donations
are still coming and Im confident that all the monies sent by Larry and Steve
will be returned to the gathering fund. I didn't even know there was a fund
when I volunteered to host this year. It's all working out just fine. Thanks
for your support.

KR> 2015 Gathering

2015-09-10 Thread Dan Heath
I have always made a generous contribution to the HAT, in the past.
However, I have never in the past paid fees to attend. I prefer the "HAT",
but either way is good for me, but do we really need to pay fees and pass
the hat?

It is worth noting that we simply forgot the customary passing of the hat
during the KR Banquet. The passing of the hat is typically done to assure
some funding for next year's gathering. I know I intended to add a
substantial donation, and had told DAn I would remind him during the
banquet. So, I'll put Dan Prichard's PayPal address out here. To donate to
the KR Gathering, you can send funds to Dan via PayPal at

KR> 2015 Gathering

2015-09-09 Thread Dan Prichard
Now that things have calmed down a bit I would like to say thanks to all those
who attended the 2015 Gathering @MMV. It was a pleasure to host this years
event and hope to see everyone at next years gathering where ever that may be.
I don't think I could have pulled this off without the help of John Bouyea and
my wife Marsha. And thanks to all of those who pitched in to help. A special
thanks to Larry Flesner for taking on the grill and sharing his poems with the
group. Both Mark Langford and Jeff Scott did a great job in educating the
masses in fiberglass techniques and weight / balance. Jeff Bertuleit's
propeller lecture was excellent and very informative as was the presentation
from Kurt @ Dynon.
We hope to have a full account of the funds by this weekend. Doesn't look like
we broke even but we still have 4 shirts to sell and some have promised
donations. If you would like to donate to the Gathering General Fund you can
send it through PayPal to my email. Dprich01 at comcast.net

Thanks again for letting me host the 2015 Gathering

That is how we get the bulk of our rainfall here in the Southwest. The good
news is that you can see them from some distance while airborne, so are easy

2015-08-27 Thread Dan Heath
WOW!!! EFS-2. Most of you can not know what an awesome thing this is for
the VW flyers. These carbs are the best thing for the VW that you could ask
for. I put one on my first KR and it was "plug and chug". There are three
tuning steps that take less than 30 minutes total and you will never have
carb problems again. These have become virtually impossible to get since
Ellison quit making them.

If you ever use an Ellison on your VW, you will never want for any other
carb. It is a pay me now, or pay me later in money and frustration, so get
this when it is available, treasure it, and have no concern for what it may
cost as it will pay you back many times over.

As the Ausies say, Steve, GOOD ON YA.

Carbs - Since purchasing Ellison Fluid Systems we have been busy with shop
renovations, servicing and overhauls. We have a batch of EFS-2's nearly
ready for assembly. The bodies are back from the platers so they just need
assembly. We will have several on the shelf soon if anyone is interested.

KR> Dacron substitute

2015-08-21 Thread Dan Prichard
If the nylon you're looking at is water or wind resistant then its coated with
silicone. Don't use that. Any fiberglass supply shop will have some sort of
peel ply. Prices vary. Tap Plastics, fiber lay, US composites etc.
I bought mine from a.s after picking up a few samples from local fabric stores.
The peel ply from a.s has worked the best for me and was cheaper. Good luck

I have had both and the Corvair is more powerful and trouble free than is

Also, I am going to a new aircraft with a different engine, so have my

I used the firewall, figuring that, that location would never change.

Subject: KR> weight and balance

Hi guys,
Monday we will do a weight and balance check to calculate the engine
position. We did build a KR-2 but did extend the tail like an kr2-s, have
the old kr2 wings but with the extension like the kr2-s. Fire wall is
reinforced for the more powerful engine but have no two inch extension to
the front. Can you guys give me the advice what you should use for the fwd
and aft gravity point? I think I can use the drawing dimensions. Result will
be more space after the engine.

KR> MMV Gathering

2015-08-10 Thread Dan Prichard
Getting close, 24 days. Things are moving well on this end and the excitement
is growing. There's still rooms available and plenty of camping space. If your
not attending and want a shirt or hat just let me know before 17 Aug. I have to
get the order in to make sure they're available to the attendees.
I'm setting up a table for smaller things you want to trade, sell or give away
( no wives or kids please). Being them out and make another builders day.

>>I'm looking for a suggestion on how to put a bulkhead fitting for my fuel
line though my center spar. All the ones in the book are for thin metal
bulkheads. Not two inch wood. I don't want to just RTV a piece of tubing
in. <<
