Well guys, I hate to do it but I need to get rid of my KR2s. After I had
my heart attach last year I don't want to keep jumping through the FAA
stress test hoop every year to keep my medical.
 What I have is a Langford KR2S extended 14 inches with AS5046 Airfoils. I
bought the Wix kit when I started so most everything is there to finish the
Airframe plywood, both mahogany and birch spruce for outer wing spars foam
ETC. Currently she is in the boat stage with completed tail section. I have
also fabricated much of the control assemblies bell cranks as well as the
WAF which were CNC cut at a local shop. Landing gear attach fittings also
CNC cut and many many other items , to much to list here. I am keeping my 3
corvair cores for use in my future LSA homebuilt. All the parts and
assemblies are here at my shop in Cameron SC, if you would like to look at
them . I can also send any pictures you would like to see if you contact me
off list. I will not separate these parts, mainly because I will have to
remove a wall in my back room to get her out, so it's all or nothing. The
workmanship is excellent this would give someone a huge head start in
building there KR for about the cost of the basic kit. I really hate to give
her up, but it's time to move on to something low and slow.

Subject: KR> Turbo vs NA - fuel efficiency

I've enjoyed the posts. This is my .02 when it comes
to cost-benefit and efficiency.

It occurred to me one day when I had the choice of flying
east one beautiful day when I had no wind up to 15k' [okay, maybe 3kts] for a
200nm trip in my C-150. No one ever taught what altitude to fly for best
efficiency, government this, regs that, etc... What was the best alt from
gnd-effect [not possible for the obvious terrain changes] to 15k'? Yes,
my 150 would make it! Whats the best fuel consumption altitude? I
won't address speed for this particular post as it?s a fine line to opening up
different discussion altogether. I'll just post you what I have done as
it helps answer to turbo, or not to turbo.

I have access to a few planes POH's: my C-150, a twin
comanche, a turbo twin comanche [normalized only], C-210 [turbo >35in
single], and a good ole gas-drunk piper apache!

I felt crazy plotting these data because no one can
answer my question as to what alt. and speed to fly at to earn the most MPG in
a no wind environment and explain why. Is climbing for the TAS benefit
worth it? in short, no. Turbo is closer to fuel saving however, and
this surprised me.

Over the next probably 20hrs of flight planning scenarios
[excited new pilot has this energy], I planned my own trip I faced that day
with each plane, and again for flights at 1k,3k, up to ceiling, and svc.
ceiling. Parabolic ascents, descents, jet-type ascent/descent profiles,
etc. After that, I planned full fuel tank burn for each plane.
Aside from the predicted ground effect winning efficiency in all cases, I
found its best to stay as low as possible because the fuel spent climbing does
not earn its keep for the TAS payoff when climbing to altitude for a no wind
condition. I tried different climb speeds, etc to cover all angles.
I learned much in the process. Two upsets though: The turbo planes
[both normalized and boosted] climbing to their high cruise altitude provided
to be equally efficient as the NA planes that didn't climb. They were in
turn faster in the process as well. the turbo's payoff occurs when the
tanks are fully used because its more time spent at altitude benefiting from
the TAS gain. Now does fuel price offset the price of the turbo?
That depends on how much the pilots time is worth.

My opinion, is that the cost of the turbo, certified and
experimental application is not worth the benefit regarding effieciency.
On the other hand, if you live on an ocean island would you want a turbo?
What if you lived in the Rocky mountains? Envrionment and safety can
persuade otherwise and other people have posted positives and negatives I won't
repeat here. At Oshkosh last year, I talked to a guy named Jer from
Colorado in the Cessna Pilots Assoc. I flew in with that is a CFII, and
specializes in mountain flying instruction. If you look him up, you
didn't hear he was an 'old guy' from me :) He also does not desire turbos
and this lead to an interesting conversation of mountain flying in normally
aspirated planes because I'm near the smoky mountains. Contact me and
I'll flip you his email from his biz card if you care to share a conversation
like I did.

My twin turbo Nissan 300zx is just an experience everyone
should enjoy. I do like turbos. They are fun! I like the
power if the engine can withstand it like the car can. Having a turbo on
a twin and losing an engine in Idaho is better than crashing because single
engine performance is not what the poh says when you need it most. Seeing
a kr with a turbo definitely is sophisticated, complicated and something to
be proud of because it does have its element to once again, outperform a
certified plane in all regimes. Cost-benefit? eh, when it all comes
down to it, as an airport manager, I see too many obstacles to general aviation
to warrant making a plane that takes great sunset pictures endure less flying
time because a more complex system requires more maintenance and threatens the
pilot with added cost and time.

Get em flying!

Andy

Subject: RE: KR> Any word on NVaero after airport flood?

Those pics pretty well sum up my past couple weeks. The large hangars
midfield in the bottom of the horse shoe is where we were located. We ended
up with about 9' of water. I received the call about 1:30 in the afternoon.
After renting two 26' u-haul trucks and a flatbed, we worked until about
4:30 in the morning getting as much as we could. Both trucks were packed to
the gills, KR-1 put on the flatbed, and the Clausing lathe and Bridgeport
mill made it out. All the molds, much tooling and supplies, as well as 3
airframes remained. We came back a couple hours later and were turned away
as water was already in our hangar.

I was able to walk in today. About 2 - 3 inches of muck and mud remains.
The KR-100, the new KR-2S fuselage, and a few molds, including a set of
center section skins that are ready to be pulled from the molds were
untouched by water. The new design light sport airframe we were building is
shot so we will have to start over and probably will not make it to
Sun-N-Fun with it like we had hoped. Most of the remaining mold were in the
water but fortunately look like they will clean up well. There were a few
tools and parts I thought had made it into the truck that were found in
various places of the hangar. I had a new Bosch drill/ driver that
apparently was left on one of our fabrication tables. Somehow it escaped
unscathed and works perfect. It seems that particular table floated and
never submerged. Our fuselage table and glass cutting table weren't so
lucky. We will have to build new ones.

We had been diligently working on the final plugs/ molds for the new AS-5046
airfoil, center section, and 009 tail group. I am happy to say those were
all loaded and safely stowed away in the U-hauls.

This is the second major flood in 5 years at Corona. The past couple years
we had the threat of flood but it never happened. The Army Corps of
Engineers had modified Prado Dam so many of us thought the flooding issue
had been finally resolved so there was a false sense of security with most
of us I think. Now that we are producing parts and kits for the KR, as a
company we cannot afford this type of damage or losses. Just the move so
far has cost us about $3500 and that does not include losses from parts/
machinery, or tooling. I figure the total hit will fall around $25k. In
light of all this we have relocated our facility to Chino (CNO), which is
about another 10 minute drive. Corona was about a 30 minute drive for us
from home so now we are looking at least 40 minutes depending on traffic.
There is a lot of activity at Chino and several businesses that will be
beneficial to have access to. While I prefer Corona overall Chino is by the
far the best choice from a business standpoint.

The hangar is a bit smaller at the new location than what we had at Corona
but we are still planning a build out with a classroom/ pilot lounge with a
full bath and kitchenette for events or builder workshops. Once we are
built out we will have a Saturday morning breakfast club for those
interested in building their first few parts with factory support. New
builders will be able to gain some hands on experience and build confidence
to complete their projects. If any of you are ever in the area, feel free
to stop in. It is always best to give us a call so we know to expect you.

Regards,

Steve Glover

Craig,

Just a suggetion but the Dynon really gives you everthing you would need for
VFR + with the attitude indicator. Keep it simple.
For backup, you can use a GPS for altitude, direction and ground speed.

Now that I have a D6 in my KR2S, and if I had to do it all over, I would
just have use only a D6 in the 1st place. Room it pretty scarce in a KR
panel.
I also love the attitude indicator. Never knew this untill I started flying
as much as I do now and get close to a cloud every now and then.

Been tinkering with a new old style panel design and I have 3 versions so
far.
I tried to stay with the standard T configuration but I have room to move
and
mix. My thinking right now is to make this main panel all flight
instrumentation and put the engine and nav displays to the sides. Nav CRT
on
left and eng steam gauges on right. Take a look and I sure would like to
get

KR> fuel system fittings

Dene,

I believe that the only flexible hoses which will get the nod from
your inspector are the MS28741 series rubber hose assemblies. These
hoses are rated for use both inside and outside of fuel tanks and,
unlike a single barb with band clamp, have a threaded barb which
engages the inside of the hose and a threaded collar which engages the
outside of the hose to 'clamp' the hose to the barb (note - if you
have not seen them before, they are not flare fittings).

As others have noted, flexible lines are heavier then rigid lines, but
they do have their place. Specific examples of usage would be input
lines for pressure transducers or carburetors and output lines for
fuel pumps, where flexing caused by changing pressure or vibration
from pump/engine operation would have a detrimental effect on rigid
lines over time.

For aircraft applications, I absolutely agree with the opposition of
others to the single barbed connections. This is one of those aspects
of aircraft construction where I believe that one cannot compromise
safety for the sake of saving a couple of dollars.

My two-cents worth,

KR> Friday off topic; GPS Software

2010-12-18 Thread Larry Knox
We sell the Anywhere map and the Pro has the updatable charts on it. It is
north up or track up and is a beautiful and easy to use GPS. The standard or
the pro is a reasonable 6 to 700$ unit that is easy to use moving map GPS.
We also have an Apple IPad that is a marvel with the big screen and the
unbelievable easy to use moving map chart system with 40$ yr update charts
but it is north up only plus it does not give you running mileage or time on
your screen. I still fly with my anywhere map standard as it is so simple an
all that is needed. I also have XM weather on it and so simple to use. I
have a complete 496 Garmin set up with XM weather that I will sell very
reasonable as I dislike the complex damn thing. I have the yoke mounts,
several, and the gismo panel mounts 2 as well as the XM antenna, in house
charger and 12 volt plugins. la...@lebanair.com

The only thing I did not like is that the map does noy rotate to match your
direction of travel as does the Garmin. I also fly the Garmin and love it. I

also have all the sectionals on my laptop which hooks up to my GPS and gives

me a huge moving map display but it does not rotate to follow direction of
travel either. You can put all the sectionals on your laptop for about $30
but they are not updateable.

I have been looking at that same system and thinking it is a good buy for
what it does. A G armin 296 is the only other moving map that I have used.
If you have ever used one of the Garmins let me know how it compares. I
watched the video and have read some of the website and don't remember
seeing terrain warnings. I'm sure there are other features that need to be
compared but the Adventure Pilots big screen and touch screen icons are a
plus. Let us know the pros and cons once you have some experience behind it.

I still need to buy a set of plans, maybe some of you have an old set??

What has been the most recommended epoxy for this purpose?

KR> KR2S vs KR2; Bill of Materials?

2010-12-18 Thread Larry Knox
Dan, I have a hanger full of Kr2's and everybody wants them for nothing with
free delivered it seems. I don't want to sell them piecemeal as it is almost
impossible to ship anything without it getting destroyed in the mail. I have
an almost completed KR2S that was supposed to be bolt the wings on and fly
it. I have as complete a kit as you will ever see for a KR2S with engine,
minus prop and instruments. And I have a Kr2 boat that has some extra's. I
lost my right shoulder, for it looks like the last time trying to prop an
airplane and they say there is no fix for it. I am hoping for some patch as
I had pretty good use of it before but if I get enough to fly my plane I
have now it will be used only for that for as long as I can. I have a motor
home and a 22 ft enclosed van trailer and love to travel. We will deliver
anywhere in the US cheap. Check out the stuff on www.lebanair.com or
la...@lebanair.com Let me know if you want more pictures and I am open to
any reasonable offer for a bunch of stuff.

The project I took over has half the elevator missing, I've debated with

"I guess I'm looking for pros and cons more than anything."

The most abused components on airplanes are tires and wheel pants. Even if
you don't operate off grass or dirt strips they just take a beating
especially if they are in the prop wash which basically means sand blasted.
Already mentioned weight and vibration issues are real considerations. To
minimize the ingestion and accumulation of mud/ice/debris I took some 1/4"
clark foam and glassed in a bulkhead into each half of my wheel pant around
the tire. This also adds a lot of stiffness to the pants instead of having
to make them with multiple layers of glass to attain the same strength.

Craig,

I purchased the Henrob torch several years ago. It welds 4130 tube quite
well. Of course you have to practice on some small pieces before you go and
weld on and engine mount or push pull rods. I use 1/8" 4130 rod. It works
very well on auto body panels too. The small concentrated plume  burns with
just 4 psi set for oxygen .  Check out Aircraft Spruce. they sell it
there.   Joe Cruz

Tig is nice but the equipment to do it is expensive so I would have to pay
to all my parts made.  With gas I have all the equipment and as I build I
can make changes or totally redesign a part as necessary.

KR> KR-2 . WANTED TO BUY

2010-09-18 Thread Larry Knox
Derek, I made the dicission before we left 3 weeks ago to sell my KR2S. I
have a lot of veriaty to choose from. If you want to do a lot of work or a
very small amount of work we can fix you up. We live in Lebanon OR and I
have property in Parachute CO so we travel thru there a lot. I have a
started Base model and enough parts to complete it minus a prop. I have a
very nice almost complete Corvair Powered one that needs a small amount of
work to fly. My wife don't like them and I have not enjoyed working on them
so I am looking for a 180/182/172/170/175 that I can upgrade to a back
country airplane. I can make you a real deal and include delivery if needed.
We are in Akron, CO now and headed for NM and AZ and then on home. We are
heading south as soon as the weather will let us out of here and will be
home in about a week depending on how much fun we run into. There is some
pictures on our Web at www.lebanair.com Tebo will be back in there on the
19th or 20th and he can send you some pictures of the one in the shop. Phone
is 541-258-5029. Derek King is our Mech. Flight instructor and can tell you
about it as well as Doug our Mech. That helped me upgrade the engine to the
Nitride crank and the 5th bearing with a complete new internal package. My
cell phone is 541-405-5911. And can return a call when on the ground.

I have been fighting my new brakes, getting them properly "bled". For some
reason, they don't pump up from the bottom like the Rosenhan did. PS: I
have a full set of Rosenhan (Matco) wheels, brakes, axles, and spacers for
the Diehl gear, for sale OFF NET.

So, knowing that I am going to make the forward deck removable, and move the
fuel to the wings, I decided to bite the bullet and "git er done". Today, I
cut off the old deck and it appears that I am going to have to cut the tank
to get it out. This tank has a Princeton Probe fuel sender, and all the
stuff that a header tank needs, and will go to some lucky builder, cheap,
when I get it out.

The next step is to remove the wings and cut them open , once I get the new
tanks built. The plan is to fly to the Gathering on the VW, with new fuel
tanks, and change it out for the Corvair, soon after I get back, in hopes of
flying to the Corvair college in November, on Corvair power. So, needless
to say, I will have a complete 2276 VW with all the trimmings, and I mean
ALL, from in front of the firewall, to the tip of the spinner, with very few
exceptions. As good as this engine is running now, if I did not already
have the Corvair, I would just keep on flying it as I am not looking forward
to all this work in the 95 degree weather that we will have between now and
Gathering time.

So, I am sorry to say that, the time for building has begun again. I must
be a sick puppy.

KR> Wing gap cover screws ?

2010-06-28 Thread Larry Knox
I'm having my spacers machined now as I no longer have my equip. and the nut
plates built. I'm going this way so I can remove my wings in a short time
and load my plane to haul it south for the winter. I'm having the spacers
machined with an ear on them so I can install them with a rivet so they
can't come out. This is my own plan so if you find something that works good
please post it. I Don't know how to post pictures or all this stuff you guys
do with these damn computers and as slow as I learn anymore I don't think
I'll live long enough to figure it out. la...@lebanair.com

My gap seals were (up until a couple of weeks ago) held on with a
combination of double-sided tape and two #4 woods screws abouv 3/8" long on
each seal. One was in the bottom into the rear spar, and the other was at
the trailing edge where top and bottom of the gap seal met. That worked
OK, but now that I'm trying to get the double-sided tape off, I can say that

I wouldn't wish that job on my worst enemy! It takes about an hour per
wing, is an exercise in futility, and has resulted in damaging some of the
only real paint on my plane, the underside the stub wings.

I've been kicking myself that I didn't simply extend the stub wing surfaces
out that extra inch and a half so attaching the wings left only an eighth
inch gap or so, which could easily be filled by colored vinyl "electrical"
tape. I'm doing that right now, and it's really not that hard to do, even
after the plane is built...assuming you haven't painted it yet! The
downside to a small gap is that you have less flexibility in manuevering the

wings around to line up the wing attach fittings. But another thing I'm
going to try to implement is nutplates and 4130 steel spacers on the main
wing attach fittings so I'll only have four long 3/8" and four long 3/16"
bolts to fool around with when removing and installing the wings. I'm not
sure why I care, since it's been 5 years since I had the wings off last, but

if nothing else it will help minimize the discontinuities in the outer
wing/stub wing gap. The aft fittings are easy to access...just drop the
flaps and there they are, but the mains will require a hole the diameter of
a socket. The longer bolts and steel spacers will cost me some weight, but
at this point I'm happy enough with my plane to expect no real degradation
in performance by gaining another few ounces...

On that subject, to those running any kind of 5th bearing, is there any
reason not to run an aluminum line from the bearing to the oil port? I know
most "aircraft" engines with prop governors run stainless lines. A 3/8"
aluminum line has a rated burst pressure of 300 psi or so (and that's with a
2x factor of safety.) The line on the 'vair is attached to the engine on
both ends, and adel clamped at various locations along the length, so I
can't imagine vibration/fatigue being an issue

I'm thinking it's probably a good idea to run stainless, but just wanted to
see what those with experience have done.

Thoughts?

Matt

-Original Message-

Hi Dan,
The only thing I would suggest is putting stainless steel fittings in the
5th bearing if it is not and in the oil filter adapter that the 5th bearing
oil line is attached to. It may not be as critical on the Corvair engine as
compared to a Lycoming.

Unless you want the rather considerable expense of thorough
 non-destructive testing ~ ~ ~ such as dye-penetrant and
 Magna-Flux, maybe even X-ray &/or ultra-sound ~ ~ ~ unless you really
think you need any or all of those procedures, there is a rationale to
re-building a used case. Old-timers refer to them as being "seasoned",
which I
guess is similar to 'seasoning' a new cast iron skillet.

If you are comfortable with the absolute knowledge of the source of your
used case and know that the engine it came from was actually running OK the

last time it was shut down, clean it up - immaculately! Then, visually
examine it as closely as you know how. Ask for help: there is nothing
like a
second set of eyeballs that may see something you missed. Get out your
best sets of micrometers, bore-gauges and calipers and mike the bloody
thing;
again, as closely as you know how.

Heck, even if you are going to trust a new case to keeping your rear-end
in the air you'll probably do all of the same inspection work, any way . .
.
. . . . .

I have yet to fly a Vee-dub, but have rebuilt several of Dr. Porche's
beauties for automotive use. Never once started with a new case. Even
hopping-up a couple of them for off-road racing and dune-bugging in The
Imperial
Valley/Yuma desert areas, where/when we ran the hell out of them in the
very worst of environments, we NEVER had a failure of an accepted &
inspected
used case!

Well, that's not exactly true. We did have one failure in a used case
that we had cleaned up, inspected and found acceptable. We sent it out for

machine shop work - boring & stroking, etc. Even installed needle-bearing

mains on the crank. Damned thing was a real work of art. Unfortunately,we

did NOT re-check the machine shop's work as closely as we should have . . .

. . . . Three cylinder/head hold-down bolts on one of the cylinders pulled
out of the case. Nutz!

down test but I knew the result before I even tried as I could see the valve
seat turned sideways by shinning a flashlight in the sparkplug hole. I just
didn't know weather it was the intake or exhaust. Well it was the intake, I
could also see somesmall peces of metal laying down in the bottom of the
cylinder barrel.
So I will pull it apart to see what i have to do to fly again.

Larry,
sorry i didn't answer sooner, I missed the fact that you were talking
about an Areo carb. I think that a little information might be needed but
I'll take a shot at it. I am thinking that you have a 35mm carb on a 2700
cc corvair? i any case the success of anything but the #3 needle has been
elusive. Make the mark on it just like the instruction say where the flat
ends. This is the starting point for setting the needle depth in the slide.
I am working from memory so the instruction should be referred to to allow
for my dyslexia, I think the flat faces away from you when viewing from the
intake throat. Make sure that you have the mixture cut off set up by the
instructions also. Make sure you have your timing set on the engine at least
as accurate as you can for the start. That affects low end idle
tremendously. I left the stop nut for the throttle adjustment loose so that
I had a full range for starting and running. When I had the engine running i
then pulled the throttle out at slow increments until I reached what I
thought would be my low idle without it being rough (for me that is about
700-750 rpm) At this point i redid timing dynamically to full static rpm
(again for me i am set up to 32 deg. advance at 2900 Rpm) At this point
started to adjust the mixture needle. I did not have a mixture gage at the
time and used a dwell/rpm to visibly see results as well as the sound of the
engine. I was making adjustments with the engine running (this is not for
everyone-let your personal safety be your guide) When I made an adjustment I
would run it up and down to make sure that it would return to the same rpm
and still idle smooth. The needle needs to make very small turns when you
are close to the results that your after. I made an adjustment this past
week for summer time temps and it was on the order of an 1/8 turn at a time.
I think that I have mine adjusted to the rich side of the original set
point. In the end I really was lucky I guess as the engine started the first
time and was able to run. The adjustments were not far from what the
instructions tell for set up. I have nearly 500 hours with the carb now. The
only thing is the slide type carbs will always favor a side of the engine
for rich and lean. maybe 100 deg from side to side. The solution for me was
to install a tornado directly behind the carb to swirl the mixture before
the split in the intake risers.
Roy, I fell that you may be a little over optimistic about exhaust spans
with respect to the comment of 80 deg. span being a lot. I currently have my
alarm set at 170 deg. span and it occasionally goes off in full power climbs
and requires a slight mixture adjustment to settle it. But on the other end
of the spectrum I can get exhaust spans at altitude (7500 or higher) below
30 deg. At low altitudes 50 to 70 deg spans are common. A friend with a hot
Lance air (actually several of them) told me that 80 deg. span is the lowest
he has ever gotten to.
   Hope this helps a little.

Coopersburg, Pa.

I was just reading an article the other day in an old sport aviation
about setting up the posa. You might want to search the Sport Aviation
archives on www.eaa.org it seemed a very good article and apparently you
need to set up the high speed first then switch out the needles to find
the best overall idle and low speed operation. I think it was in a feb
82 sport aviation but I am not sure.

Joe Horton is running an Aerocarb.  I'm sure he'll chime in when he gets
a chance, but basically it does work and once properly adjusted, tends
to stay that way.  I do know that they don't appreciate fuel pump
pressure, and prefer gravity feed instead.  There should be plenty of
info in the CorvAircraft archives (see
ttp://www.maddyhome.com/corvairsrch/index.jsp  ), using the keyword
"Aerocarb".

KR> Divorce Result of Wing Attachment Fight

2010-05-17 Thread Larry Knox
I use the 2 stool method and the pointed pins and works good but would like
to see the tubing method.
My question: I fired my beautiful Corvair up on Friday for her first run and
what a thrill. I have a Posy type Aerovee? carb. and a dual fuel system. A
manual engine pump and an electric fuel pump mounted as standalone systems
supplying fuel to the carb. where they both connect to a single fuel
pressure regulator that is mounted on the input into the carb. There is no
primer system and no choke system. When I would use the electric pump and
opened the throttle some it would run gas out on the ground until the engine
fired. I turned the elec. Off and it ran great and smooth as silk. Am I
going to need a primer or choke system and what kind of air induction
system. I still do not have a cowl and may just have to try to do something
with this mess I got with it. Thanks in advance, la...@lebanair.com

I may be wrong but I don't think there is any federal requirement to have
insurance but your local authorities may require you to show proof of
insurance to use their facilities. Our airpark requires owners to have X$
liability on their aircraft but guests who fly in are not required to have
it. It only makes sense to protect yourself with liability insurance even if

you don't want or can't afford hull insurance.

just use air out of the discharge from the cylinder cooling. Your engine has
the manual fuel pump and distributor set up mine does so it should work that
way. I see you have cooling set up for your coils, I think that probably is
a good idea. Do you have points or are you using electronic Ignition.

Larry,
If you go to http://www.krnet.org/krs/jhorton/ A couple of the first few
pictures show the current state of my cowl and the very last picture shows
the way it was formed when I first started flying it. The cowl was orignally
bought from Rand but it weighed 18# before any fitting and changing. I
pulled a mold off and sold the cowl and made the one that is on the plane.
It is made from carbon fiber and weighed only 6.5# before I started
modifiying, It probably weighs about 8# now . The orignal way had an out
side scoop for the carb but the aerocarb did not llike it so I changed the
bottom to enclose the carb and filter. I have done some testing on the
intake holes and think that I canclose them up by several sq. inches on each
side with no effect on cooling.

KR> Jabiru engine location

2010-05-01 Thread Larry Knox
Dan, I can't help you with that, but thanks for the general CG location
points. Iv' been trying to find this in my info when I didn't get it off the
KRnet. I still haven't found it. Interesting that you are putting a Jabiru
on your KR, I just received a new crated 2200 that I canceled the order for
as they could not deliver it when I needed it. It will not work on the Sport
Hornet application I wanted it for so I now have a new engine to add to my
collection of goodies that I don't need. I see why you didn't need this cowl
as it sure won't work for the Jabiru application either. Anyone out there
need a beautiful new 2200 Jabiru pusher engine. I'm not sure what the
difference in a pusher and a tractor engine is but I think its accessories.
la...@lebanair.com I thought dealing with Rotax was as bad as it gets but

HI,
Would someone be willing to help verify a reasonable engine location for my
KR2s for a Jabiru 2200. Data is as follows:
Ref line - firewallFuselage levelTanks empty Nothing mounted forward of
firewallFirewall aft - all in place (seats, wings, canopy, turtle deck,
landing gear [conventional gear], tailTwo people in seats weighing 366 lbs
Look at rearward cg @ 15" behind leading edge. Understand allowable range
is 8" to 16".
Firewall to wing leading edge is 14.5"
Weight on mains is 615# 17.625" behind ref lineWeight on tailwheel is 138#
158.25" behind ref line
Estimated weight of engine, cowl, prop, mount, battery, etc. is 173#
Total estimated weight is 173+615+138 = 926#
Solve for D, the distance to the cg of engine, etc.
615x17,625 + 138x158.25 - 173D = 929x(14.5+15)10839.375 + 21838.5 - 27405.5
= 173D
D = 30.48"
Firewall to engine attach points will be 23".
The tank behind the firewall holds 10 gallons. The 8" dia al wink tanks
(formed to a d shape) are mounted directly behind front spar.

Appreciate help and any suggestions.

Everything essential to understanding the new wing can be found here:

http://www.krnet.org/as504x/

On that site Mark's comments on Troy Petteway's replacement of the RAF48
wings with AS504X on his airplane indicates that the CG remained exactly the
same. Obviously, so did the spar spacing and placement on the airframe so
to answer the question indirectly, I believe one of the design goals for the
new wing was to maintain the same structural geometry and CG envelope and
there are enough examples now flying with the new wing to confirm that that
is the case. Mark could tell us more about the aft 2" of the published KR
center of gravity envelope with the RAF48. Most builders consider those
last aft inches to be "no fly" loading.

Today was one of the big milestones. I finally flew my Long X-country.
Started at Gulfport, MS; to downtown Moblie, AL; then on to Gulf Shores,
and back to Gulfport. It involved a lot of Radio operations (Gulfport,
Mobile and Pensacola approach/departure, as well as towered and non
towered operations. Tracked using Pilotage, VOR radials and VOR
triangulation for some waypoints. Altitudes of 5500, 3500 and 4500. 175
Statute miles total. It went pretty well considering how BUSY I was in
the cockpit what with the flight plan, calculations and radios. I was a
bit frazzled, so my landings were a bit less than I have been doing
recently, but nonetheless, I DID IT!! It'll will take a lot more flying
for it to become real second nature, but I AM glad to see it all pull
together. 2.6 hours on the hobbs (NASTY HEADWIND on the way back) I made
it back home and promptly CRASHED and BURNED on the couch!!! Its all
review and polishing from here on. I'll be glad to get the PPL under my
belt and get back to some NORMAL life again!! (it DOES become NORMAL
doesn't it)

Larry and other builders,

NEVER, EVER, NEVER use numbers from another KR to determine the W
of your KR. Too many variables between airplanes like length of spinner,
if that is used for datum point, length of engine mount, was wing
location changed as in 2 inches added forward of the wing in the 2S,
angle of seat back, etc, etc., etc. Remember, these are not Cessnas
or Pipers build in jigs but each is a "one off" airplane. Each one
must be treated as a one of a kind and measured and weighted as
such. Nothing done to that point matters if the flying CG location
is not correct.

Level at the longerons. I understand that is what the plans say, and maybe
I read it there myself, but that is also what I have been told and what I
have used. So, I simply put a level on the shelf behind the seat and set
the plane to level.

I have questioned that, thinking that maybe it should be with the mean chord
leveled, but was told no, it was at the longerons.

I don't know why it is that people immediately assume that I've unsubscribed

them unjustly (usually because their spam filter is deleting their KRnet
email) or that I'm otherwise behind some diabolical plot to prevent their
existence on KRnet. When I go to the KRnet search engine at
http://www.maddyhome.com/krsrch/index.jsp and type in "myron" as a keyword,
several thousand hits appear less than a second later. Put in your email
address in the "from" field, and several thousand of the same appear. I'm
not sure what archive he's using, but it's not the one that's listed at the
bottom of every email ever posted to the list, and one in the first
paragraph or two of www.krnet.org! And no, I didn't put them back a minute

ago. And whatever archive he's using, my guess is that he's not doing it
right or there's some other error, but I assure you it has nothing to do
with anything I've ever done regarding your email.

What did I ever do to deserve this other than correct you when you were
spreading disinformation about something you apparently knew nothing about?
And if I have a problem with you personally, it's mainly due to exactly
that. I really do have better things to do than be petty about stuff like
sanitizing somebody's existence. I get a lot of compliments about how
patient I am with people on this list, but I must admit you've really made
my day!

Nice model, by the way...

Good`Ay Phil,

Better still to calculate HP you have to burn around 27 litres per hour to
make 100 hp.

US gallon = 3.78541178 litres Therefore adopt 3.7854

7 gall per hour = 26.4978 litres / 27 X 100 = 98.14 HP

OK 3.8 gallons per hr = 14.38452 litres / 27 X 100 = 53.276 HP

So if you are happy with the performance of your aircraft then the above
doesn't matter a rats.

If you claim 110 and 120 HP then the fuel burn must stack up too and with a
Corsair driving a propeller I don't think so unless rpm is over way over
4,000 .
Claiming a 100 HP would be a more honest engine specification.

HI guys.
I got this today. I was taking engines with a few friends here in Australia.
We were talking VW HP. and finding out how best to work it out. I told them
how well the Cvars were going at the moment.

Is this all true? or not?

Please do not shot the messenger.

I have no idea, so I will throw it into the ring.

Hey guys,

We just made the desision to go for a dragonfly canopy. Now we have the
choice in 4 colors, Clear, Light gray, Medium gray, or EZI green. What color
should you buy.
Maybe some body can give me his site adres and color of his canopy so I have
the impression what to buy. Or someone has a bad experience about his color.

Another question. Where do you get the level flight setting for a weight and
balance calculation. I am going to do my initial wt and Bal. so I can decide
if I can put my battery in the Header tank area. The sliders for the sliding

It'll burn about 7 gal/hr on takeoff or otherwise wide open, and with
reasonable throttle setting and leaning will drop to around 3.5 gal/hr
cruise. The efficiency of the plane determines how fast you'll be going in
cruise, but 130 mph is a pretty safe bet. Mine will do 160 mph true
airspeed burning 3.8 gallons or so, if that's a clue. 10.5 gallons per side
is a pretty nice number. I only carry 15.5 gal total, and I can make over
500 miles if I'm not in a big hurry and throttle back a tad.

For a lot more info on the performance of a KR running a Corvair (both
2700cc and 3100cc) see http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/performance/ . That

first chart stinks because it was made on first flights where the EIS was
all "jiggly", so I need to replace that and generally update that whole
page, but there's some pretty solid info on that page...

I got my new bearings today, and putting them in was fairly easy. At first
they did not fit the axle, even they measured as though they should. A
little buffing with some 220 solved that problem.

However, I tried the Clorox bottle and the light cardboard and neither would
work. In fact, I still ended up pinching a hole in the tube. So I have 3
tubes left and if I go through those, I will have to go to some different
wheels. This is insane. Why would anyone ever design a wheel like this, to
go on an airplane, setting everyone up for failure from the start. I am up
to four tubes shot, now.

I should be flying, instead, I am screwing around with something that should
be a no-brainer task.

More scary. Today, I finally got the other wheel off. And it did take a
wheel puller to get this one off. I have new bearings with the proper ID,
to be delivered today, so this will not be a problem in the future. The
scary thing is that when I finally got the wheel apart, I saw that most of
the inside diameter of the tube had been pinched in the wheel seam. And,
the really scary thing is that the wheel had not been torqued completely,
or, the tube would have been cut. There were no cuts in the tube from where
it was keeping the wheel from going completely together.

I issue this post to any of you who have wheels that you inherited from
someone else. I should have checked these out completely, before flying
this plane. I have 95 hours on it, and have been just plain LUCKY.

I agree. I started my engineering career designing Space Shuttle equipment,

and we used them just about everywhere to take care of tolerances between
existing and new equipment, different vendor items, and it's just generally
good "I know it will fit together" design practice. But when it came to
stuff like mounting my cowling, I match drilled through the cowling and into

the brackets with the same sise drill bit as the fastener (#8 in this case),

then bolted the fixed "nut plate" (anchor nut) to the bracket, match drilled

the rivets and installed them, and the resulting fit is perfect. Otherwise
I'd find myself chasing the floating part around trying to get things to
line up...

hole in the foam and then fill it with mix of epoxy and something, balloons,
flox ? Then drill and tap into this for the screw. ??

Hello Netter's,

Well, it is a done deal. We will be at Sun N Fun and will have a booth near
the lake behind building "D". We can use it for a rally point for any
netters in attendance and maybe have that BBQ and get together that was
mentioned a couple weeks ago. There will be a banner with a big red "KR-2S"
on it so it should be easy to find. I'm looking forward to seeing some of
you down there. We will have a few sets of KR-2S plans for sale and a few
parts on display. Joe Horton should be in around Thursday and will have his
plane in our display for anyone wanting a closer look at one fine KR with a
Corvair power plant.

On a side note, if there are any other KR builders or fliers local or
planning on flying in, please contact me off list as I might have an extra
pass in exchange for displaying your plane or project for a few days.

It's a long trek from California but we are excited to be participating this
year and are hoping to bring the KR brand back into the mainstream of
experimental aviation.

KR> NY KR2S Project For Sale - Price Slashed

2010-04-02 Thread Larry Knox
I've still got mine and was going to inventory it for a guy in CO and
haven't gotten to it. A severe & gusty wind came in last Wed. night and I
tried to get in with my old Stinson 108-3 0470/CS and she couldn't handle
the gusts and I lost her. Was OK until the left wheel dropped off the runway
into the 2 years of construction mud and she went over on her back. I hit
mostly my head and too hard to do any real damage but lots of blood. At my
age it didn't do my back any good from the whip and sudden stop when she hit
the ground. I had her for sale and now have to disassemble her and then try
to sell her as a project. Was a grand bird and a real thrill to fly. Had to
put the inventory and my KR project on hold to salvage my old buddy. I have
one almost complete Kit and another started project and would like someone
to build them. I will take $2500 for the Kit with the Revmaster S engine and
a few hundred for the other complete boat with tail feathers and who knows

2010-02-26 Thread Larry Knox
I have 2 partly built KR2S projects and purchased a 3third that was supposed
to be bolt together and fly. I cannot do my own work anymore due to physical
problems associated with construction work. I am going to finish the last
one but would like the rest to go to a good home. I would put together a
pretty complete plane kit. I have a 2100S Revmaster engine and engine mount
I got in the last set of parts that was originally on an aircraft N52WV that
looks like it was a KR2 Serial # 001 belonging to W. E. Vincent in 1979. I
am open on price if someone really wants to build it and fly it. I also have
a new and pickled English built Rotary that is 100 horse that is only short
the intake air distributor. I have aluminum spring and retract gear as well
as the nose gear, wheels tires and brakes (Cleveland) plus some instruments
and a lot of construction materials. la...@lebanair.com

I've seen the "official" KR3 amphibian drawings, but I suspect there was a
previous "KR3" version that was a twin retract. See
http://www.krnet.org/misc/kr3_twin.pdf . The handwriting looks familiar.

I don't recall ever having said (or thought) anything like the KRnet list
was dedicated only to KR2s. I have no idea where that idea came from.

I do know I'm tired of having to correct people who are bent on dragging
politics, religion, nationalism, and other stuff into conversation. These
topics tend to divide people rather than unite them. I suspect most of us
can agree that building and flying KRs is a good thing, and hope that we can

leave it at that. Everytime one of these post-a-thon things erupts, 2 or 3
people unsubscribe from the list. We've lost some very good contributors
who simply don't have the will or time to sift through all the useless junk
emails to find the few gold nuggets.

Another (of my many peaves) is people who reply to messages and don't bother

to remove most of the previous post. There's a very good description of why

this needs to be done at http://www.krnet.org/info.html . For those who are

too lazy to click on that link, the net rules are presented below. Please
take two minutes and read them all...

KRNetiquette
We have a few folks who feel compelled to comment on just about every post
made, and I can only be thankful that all 600 of us don't do that, or we'd
be wading through several thousand emails a day! Please be considerate of
your fellow KRNetHeads. A few of us would do well to heed the following
advice:

1) Think long and hard before you publicly flame somebody on this list. This

list may not be like others you've been on. We don't do that here, period.
If you have a personal problem with another lister, you need to address it
off the list and spare the rest of us your angst. If you disagree with
something somebody else posted, you can disagree in a nice manner without
getting all bent out of shape. Just point out your side of the discussion
and let others be the judge. Public flaming and superfluous bad language
will not be tolerated.

2) When replying to a post, delete everything except one or two key
sentences from the previous post. It's really ridiculous to have to search
thru 3 or 4 pages of stuff to find down at the bottom where some clown wrote

"me too". Carrying all that useless baggage around from previous posts also
gives people fits when searching the archives later, as they end up getting
10 hits for the same message.

3) Conversely, at least put SOMETHING in the post to remind us what you're
replying to. A post like "yeah, that's how I did mine and it works great"
doesn't mean a thing if you don't know what the guy's talking about, so
please cut and paste some of what you're replying to above your comments.

4) Carefully consider whether or not you even need to reply to a post.
Saying "me too", or "I don't know" doesn't contribute to the thread, it just

makes the list more bothersome. If you don't know what you're talking about,

maybe you should be listening, rather than talking. There are FEW people who

know everything about everything. Try to stick to things you KNOW about, and

let others answer the rest.

5) Try to write "keeper" posts if you're the expert on something. Cover the
whole issue, answer all possible questions, address both sides of an issue,
and make it a post that others will want to save or print out and keep.
Those are the gems that we all search for on KRNet.

6) Put your email address in your signature to make emailing others "offnet"

easier. If we all had our addresses at the bottom of our posts, it would be
far easier to "email direct". If it's blue just click on it, if it's not,
cut it and paste it into the "To" box. If throwing your email address out on

the internet makes you nervous (and it should), camoflage it a little by
replacing the @ symbol with "at", or something similar, so that bot crawlers

won't know what to do with it.

7) If you don't have anything subtantial to say, please don't post anything.

This is a KR list, and as such, really needs to stay focused on KRs, or at
least airplanes. With over 600 people on the list, if we all decided to say
something every day we'd have a real problem. Ask yourself "do 600 people
really need to see this, or are 600 people going to be annoyed by this?"
Personally, my time is pretty precious to me, and I hate to waste it reading

inane email. And is it something that you could find somewhere else?

8) Don't send

I have to agree.

There were 8 people rescued in 5 incidents by aviation ELTs in 2009
according to NOAA/NTSB last year. They go off correctly 75% of the time,
originally it was 25% for the first generation. A major part of the
reason for going to 406Mhz is that each one has a identifier. They can
look up the identifier and usually eliminate a false alarm with a few
phone calls instead of sending out search and rescue only to have them
end up at the airport or a private airfield.
On the other hand PLBs were instrumental in 3 times as many rescues and
the Marine equivalent of Elts were responsible for the vast majority of
rescues at sea. When you consider the damage a plane will usually
sustain in an accident or when over water a fixed ELT seems like a poor
option to a PLB which you could activate if you survive and perhaps move
to a better area for sending a signal than buried under a canopy of
trees upside down. Bottom line though is it is mandatory until we can
talk them into allowing PLBs as a substitute.

Personally I think items like SPOT are much more functional and useful
than a ELT.

I listened to the interview and never heard anything about $62 a
gallon.  That might be what it's costing them for their "test"
batches but they claim it should be comparable to 100LL when in full
production.  They also claim it will increase your horse power by
allowing you to advance timing by 2 or 3 degrees.  Personally, I hope
they succeed.  If they do, I don't expect to see it on the market for
3 to 5 years.  Also, if I heard correctly, they have produced a 4000
gallon batch or two for running a test engine (a big one, 540ci or
so) to TBO and check for wear.

between 2 carburetor spacers to help atomize fuel. Theory was that the
screen creates micro vortexes and helps with a more even air/fuel mixture
distribution to all cylinders. We didn't have a dino machine to test this

Stall speed is dependent on bank angle in a known manner, so if you know the

stall speed in straight and level flight, there are charts that will show
you the factor to multiply by to get your stall speed at various bank
angles. My flaps help to lower my stall speed by about 6 mph, best I can
tell, and with more deflection I can improve on that some. I guess the only

time I stalled mine at full gross weight was with Glenda, and I wasn't
watching the ASI when that happened!

There's a nice chart in the middle of
http://www.auf.asn.au/groundschool/umodule2.html that shows stall speeds for

various bank angles, as well as a wealth of other information. Also see the

links at the bottom of that webpage. That whole series of articles should

If you'll send it to me I'll document it and put it on KRnet so others can
build it, assuming it's a reasonable approach to the problem, that is. And
I'll bring it to the Gathering as well, and put it on display.

Ray could you take a good picture or two of it and post it on the Net. I
really would like to see it but I am in Oregon and will have the KR done
before I get that far from home. I want a good folding wing or a quick

Hey Guys,
There was an entire deal about 'folding wings" a few years back.  Basically
a Mr. Moore had a design for folding wings and had offered one free to the
KR community.  I guess in the hope that the rest of the community would buy
his plans from him for any additional sets.  There was a raffle and I
actually won.  However, I have since acquired a hangar and didn't need it
but still thought it might be a good option.
He never sent me a set of plans but he did send me an actual folding wing
set up.  it's just set up on the spars to show you how it would work.  I
have never used it and have now decided that I will never use it.
Therefore, in the interest of what Mr. Moore was trying to achieve I will
offer it back to the KR community.  I don't know the best way to achieve
that goal.
Is it something that should wait for the next Gathering (Dana can use it as
a raffle prize or even a tech session)?  Should we try to do something like
a prop bank and everybody that uses it send a payment to Mr. Moore (let Mark
keep it)?
I still have all the original emails from back then if anybody wants to
track the story.
I don't want to start a thread that will last forever, but I do want to try
to do what I can for the group.  Thanks.

One of our Company's pilots' received his new Canadian Licence. It's just
like a passport but has his picture on several different pages, it also
holds the medical Certificate.

Hi Eric,

I didn't receive any messages that I remember. I did completely lose my
hard drive a little over a month ago and lost virtually all my contact info.
I am still waiting to see what I get back from the data recovery from the
old drive. I try to stay on top of anything that comes in by email or with
the blackberry. I am leaving in a few minutes for surgery but will contact
you direct in the next day or so once I am able to function again from the
medications. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Our web address is www.nvaero.com. The other address that is posted keeps
popping up is left over from when we were searching for a service provider.
Although it will get you there, it is confusing. We have been trying to get
the provider to fix whatever it is causing the change...

Sorry to the netter's for posting here. I just wanted to make sure Eric
received the message before I leave for surgery.

Regards,

Steve Glover

And of course you could also copy Horton or Jones' set up where the tail
wheel was actually installed on the opposite send of the airframe.

KR> Tail wheel/rudder interconnection

2009-12-23 Thread Larry Knox
Thanks, Larry this will work for me. I was going to set mine at 3/16 toe in
but will go with dead ahead. In the piper gear we try for 1/4 or better per
wheel toe in but that's piper gear. Cessna's we try for a little less but
still toe in. The 20 and 20/22 pipers are a little squirlie so we seem to
have better luck with a little more. Of course you have to do a gear spring
or bend to accomplish this as usually its caused from a ground loop or near
so and precision is a little hard to achieve. Again, thank,

That is true and I was using that to make a point. The Diehl gear,
in my opinion, has very little fore / aft movement, or at least not
enough to be a factor. I think that Mark Langford's and my slightly
longer than standard, slightly reinforced, Diehl gear with over 1000
hours of combined flight time would indicate that zero toe-in /
toe-out works well.

While I don't question your statement "(Just apply your brakes and
apply power and see how much they flex, mine move back about 6mm)." ,
that is not a condition your gear sees on most hard surface takeoffs
and landings. Rough sod could cause fore and aft movement but the
effect on directional control has less effect with less tire to
surface friction. Any roughness causing the gear to flex aft will
probably call for immediate and aggressive rudder input to maintain
directional control anyway, independent of gear alignment.

I think this subject is being over analyzed. Go with what has been
flight proven and move along. Zero toe-in / toe-out on the Diehl
gear works well and, if I were doing it again, is the setup I would use.

Larry Flesner
