I flew home yesterday from the KR Gathering so I could tailgate and watch my KC Chiefs today. It was great seeing everyone at the Gathering! I think the weather reduced the number of attendees but it was certainly was a great time for those who did make it. KR>O'Keefe Aero
I still use Great Plains for most of my VW replacement parts. I just found out a couple days ago that Linda Bennett is actually still working and running "O'Keefe Aero" with one of her children. Talked with her on the phone for a bit. She kept the landing gear, wheels, axles, and brakes side of Great Plains when the company was sold. I had to replace some brake pads and found this out while tracking down replacements. She is pretty knowledgeable. Most of the calls I made for parts over the years were answered by her. http://www.okeefeaero.com/about-us.html Thanks, Rob Schmitt N1852Z Lee's Summit MO -Original Message- From: Mark Langford Sent: Thursday, November 11, 2021 7:53 PM To: KRnet Subject: KR>Re: HAPI crank Mike KSEE wrote: >>I'm sure Mark will offer more helpful info than I'm able to . . . but from what I've picked up over the years - mainly from Steve Bennett - the HAPI cranks were cast. A forged piece will have a wide, irregular rough patch. A cast component (shown) will have a very sharp, well-defined line where the mold was separated." It may be that a Great Plains crank and hub assembly are interchangeable. My concern would be does GPASC still sell those prop hubs, bearings, and cranks (which I'm pretty sure are SCAT-forged with a 3 degree taper on them). Indeed, Steve was the expert on what was interchangeable and what wasn't. He left a pretty big hole in the VW aircraft arena. It may be that Joe Horvath at Revmaster would know also, or Revmaster's hub/crank may be interchangeable. KR>Re: KR2S tail dimensions.
Larry, I just rechecked my plans, I put handwritten notes for the KR2S changes directly on the KR2 manual pages when I built it. The horizontal stab and elevator width's are the same as the KR2, but there is an addition in length on both the stabilizer and elevator dimensions. So yes, there is an increase is area for these surfaces. The vertical stabilizer and rudder are both taller and has more length as well. Thanks, Rob Schmitt -Original Message- From: Flesner Sent: Friday, September 24, 2021 1:47 PM To: krnet@list.krnet.org Subject: KR>new W&B I've installed my wings after working on a fuel leak at the fuel senders and took the occasion with empty tanks to do a new W&B. To no surprise, with the addition of wheel pants, possible first round poor scales, and other changes, my KR has put on 30 pounds in the last 15 years just as I did personally. That's the equivalent of 10 gallon of fuel. My CG range is 53.5" to 61.5" and with me and 25 gallon of fuel my CG falls at 58.9". I seldom if ever fly with more than15 to 18 gallon so I'm in good shape. I sure wish I could find a place to park my extra 30 pounds. With the addition of another 10 pounds or so in the baggage areas and other items I add my normal T.O. weight would fall in the 1130 pound range. I would be grounded in the U.K. I'm convinced that my flight to Oshkosh a few years back with Mark Langford as passenger, near full fuel, and all our Oshkosh baggage, that I was pushing1300 pounds and was in the very aft CG range. It certainly flew that way in pitch forces, le ss noticeable in weight. For some reason I always believed that the plans for the 2S increased the width of the horizontal stabilizer. At the Gathering I acquired a tape measure and checked. All the 2S KR's that had not been modified had the same width horizontal as mine with the standard KR2 width. I have no idea where that misconception came from. On another note, on a short auto trip yesterday I noticed a great number of Monarch butterflies were on their migration back to Mexico from the northern USA and Canada. Today while eating lunch I watched a Monarch fluttering about the flower bed out back. While I was impressed with the capabilities of the KR on the return trip from the Gathering I am humbled by the performance of the Monarch. In just 4 or 5 generations this tiny creature travels thousands of miles from Mexico to Canada and back with no GPS, ATC, Google Maps or other aids, right back to the place of it's ancestral origin. I will concede that they make a number of fuel stops but while we often pat ourselves on the back for our accomplishments I think we need to stop occasionally and appreciate the fact that Mother Nature has us beat hands down. KR>Re: Gathering Update
KR Gathering attendees. Covid information for Lee's Summit, Jackson Co MO. There are no vaccination requirements to attend the gathering. We plan to do the majority of the activities in our large open hangar that many of you will remember from 2017. We do not need to wear masks in this open hangar. We do have an indoor training room which is air conditioned. Weather permitting, we should still try to do all activities in the hangar if possible. Please bring a mask, there are "County" requirements for wearing masks in indoor spaces. That may end soon, but there is no guarantee of that. KR>KR 2021 Oshkosh events
KR Oshkosh 2021 4 KRs flew in to Oshkosh this year. Mike Sylvester, Mark Langford, Chris Price and Rob Schmitt. Two are still hear as of Thursday evening. Mike and Mark flew home on Tuesday morning. The forum on Monday presented by Mark Langford was well attended, per usual we met at the planes afterward and answered questions. We are definitely getting attention in the Homebuilt community here. Chris Price was asked to present his aircraft today at the Homebuilders Review. He got to do a question and answer session on Corvair powered aircraft with William Wynn and the owner of the twin Jag, a twin engine RV type with corvair engines. The Session was moderated by Charlie Becker, head of Home Builder operations for the EAA. My plane will be presented this Saturday at 1 pm at the Home Builders review regarding “affordable aircraft”. If you are at Oshkosh please stop by. The KRs are in row 370 if you have not found them yet. Lots of fun being had here at Oshkosh! KR>Re: Excited to meet you all at Oshkosh!
Anthony, I typically stay at Camp Scholar in a tent. The earlier you get there, the better the camping spot you can get. There is a bus shuttle service to main gates if you end up camping far away from the main grounds. Yes, there is a cost to camp and I do recommend you read up on the AirVenture web site Larry F noted. The cost is not bad, $28 to camp per night - minimum charge of 3 days. They do ask for the money up front to pay for the entire week, but if you only stay a couple days you get reimbursed when you check out. It is a very friendly campground with great atmosphere. There is a Red Barn for purchasing anything you might have forgotten. Generators are allowed during the day, but have to be shut off at night - 10 pm. That way folks can get some sleep. The tickets to Airventure itself are paid for separate. I always get the weekly ticket, but there are options to pay per day. Being an EAA member does offset the cost of the tickets. I will be there all week myself. I signed up to work at the Home Builders Headquarters, so if you see me say hello. My airplane will be parked out of the HQ, in the Automotive Engine Row typically. Gerald, Have you looked at all of the web pages and blogs that are listed at http://www.krnet.org/ ? There are at least 50 of those sites which detail almost all aspects of typical KR construction, many in excruciating detail. Perhaps you should start by reading the plans, searching the links at KRnet to see what kind of construction details you can find under each of the "Projects Under Construction" and "Completed KRs" headings. If you can't find anything there regarding any given specific aspect of KR building, I'd be quite surprised. And then there are the old KR Newsletters. There are thousands of pages of similar information, complete with photos and drawings. Some of this stuff is outdated, but many of the construction ideas that are now commonplace came from these old newsletters. The link to those is at http://www.krnet.org/newsletter/ . Specifically, http://www.krnet.org/newsletter/kr_newsletter.pdf will get them all in one file, but give it a few minutes to download. If you don't have time or willpower to do the research and finish the plane, then yes, perhaps it's time to pass Tim Brown's very nice start on a KR2S down to someone who is willing to finish the plane and fly it some day... KR>Re: Fuel Pump
Luis, I have and KR2S with 2100D. I do not have a fuel pump. As originally installed, the fuel line is 3/8" from the header tank to the gascolator, then 1/4" to Carb inlet. I did do a fuel flow test before phase I testing. Rechecking my notes, for the Revmaster you should have 8 gallons/hr minimum to pass the test. Test should be performed with a nose up attitude to simulate takeoff and have just minimum fuel in the tank. It has worked fine for my airplane over the years. I did replace the gascolator with a fuel filter later. Am I correct in my assumption or should I add one and will I have to add a fuel pressure regulator too? KR>Re: NOTICE: KRnet transition to Mailman 3 tomorrow!
Dr. Hsu, The youtube link says the flight was in Devonport Tasmania, that is a long way from KAEG. Robert Gill looks like the owner. I'm not sure this flight was the best. On takeoff, it is best to level out once off the ground and build up some airspeed (at least 80 mph) before starting a climb out. It looks like he just kept up a high nose angle and might have been pushing along just above stall speed. On landing, he was way long, he should have gone around. But reading his details he had to land due to high EGT temps. Look like he got everything sorted out, he has another youtube video posted two years later in 2016. Re: KR> supplied air respirator options?
Jeff, I think it is up to those building to make their own decisions. Your airplane looks great! But how many flight hours do you have? I will freely admit that my airplane has never won, nor will ever win any awards. But I do have over 900+ hours flying time. The two-part epoxy catalyzed Stewart systems has held up well during those flight hours. I give it a thumbs up for durability. Thanks, Rob From: Jeff York Sent: Tuesday, October 27, 2020 7:00 AM To: KRnet Cc: ROB SCHMITT Subject: Re: KR> supplied air respirator options? I would never recommend the water based paints. It takes far more air movement with water based paints in order to get the correct flash times. Far more air movement then you can achieve without a spray booth designed for water based paints. Your results will be lots of runs in the paint and a very poor finish. As far as the cheap Harbor Freight spray guns and the idea that they will paint as well as say maybe a Devilbiss or Iwata or Binks, but just not last as long ? Absolutely not true. An Iwata and other high end guns will atomize paint far better which will result in a far superior paint job. Spraying composites is far different than spraying metal. Composites will leach for months to years causing delamination. There are many steps to a great paint job and this is not the time to cut corners or scrimp on equipment and paint materials. Proper etch priming is critically important. I suggest a true 2 part epoxy primer. I know many spend so many years building and then get anxious and dont do the needed steps and correct steps to achieve the highest end results that highlight years of work. But, I have also spent a year painting a car , airplane or restoration vehicle. But, that efforts shows in a paint job that doesn't fade, peel, have orange peel or runs. I'm with Jeff on this one, by that I mean what are we doing getting rid of a perfectly good airplane when we buy or build a second one? I love my KR, but it does have limitations. So, I am building a Wittman Tailwind so I can carry passengers in relative comfort and have a faster traveling IFR aircraft. The same could be said if you want to go lower and slower. I have no intention of giving up my KR just because I have a second airplane, it is just too much fun to fly. With mine built as a tri-gear, I don't think age is going to be a problem flying it until I am really losing it. If I can fit it in the hangar I have, I might just find a low and slow aircraft project to finish up after I get the Tailwind done. We had a "Free" super cub project show up in our EAA chapter, and no one wanted it for months before someone finally grabbed it. I've seen several project hoarders who have half a dozen projects they are working on. Rob Schmitt N1852Z > Personally, I think everyone should have one of each. KR> Pandemic #6 and Mount Vernon
Sure, wish I could have made it to the Pandemic #6, but I will be at Mount Vernon. I do believe I have my KR Engine issues finally resolved. But I'll be driving this one with the spouse. Should be coming in on Friday afternoon. The Revmaster VW engine was giving me a scary stumble and loss of power when going to full power on takeoff. I keep aborting the take offs. Tried several solutions, but the most likely factor was the fuel filter. I had changed its location from forward of the firewall to behind the firewall. Either it was the new location, or it got something in it. I did also do a full disable and clean of the Revflow carb. Also found my Mag timing off about 2-3 degrees. Regardless, multiple engine runs, then a short flight this morning. No more engine stumble. Next best thing is The Light Sport Expo there in Mount Vernon this coming Thursday Friday Saturday. Re: KR> Building Question
Dr. Hsu, There are lots of other solutions for the wing gap besides vinyl tape, I've seen fiberglass, aluminum and old Venetian Blinds used. All builder preference. You could fly a KR without a covering for the gaps if you like as well. For stowable wings, you could just build a cradle to carry them vertically that fits on your trailer with the airplane. I've seen many variations on this with all types of experimental aircraft. With two people, I am sure the wings can be taken off or installed in less than 30 minutes with the current design. I have not seen a BRS on a KR yet. Does mean it hasn't happened, I just have not seen one. It is experimental, no reason you could not try it. It would need a beefed-up structure to handle it, so some real engineering is needed for that design. I thought about using tape at first, but I was hoping to hear something better than that. I kept wondering what was in the mind of KR on this matter when he was designing this aircraft? I don't understand why KR didn't choose the design solution on the wing management like what the Sonex designer did for the Sonex with very limited design changes... I have some idea to make small modifications to make the current KR wings stowable, and I would like to hear any other ideas which may work better with minimum effort?! Also, I am wondering if anyone ever did or tried to install a BRS on the KR2? KR> KR Gathering 2020 cancelled. Rescheduled for 2021
The members of the KR Gathering Steering Committee made the decision to cancel this year's KR Gathering that we had scheduled in September 2020 at the Lee's Summit Airport. There were just too many issues with the Covid 19 that were going to make this difficult for us to execute. The biggest issue was going to be meals and meal serving at the EAA Chapter. The county also recently instated new mask wearing policies as well. We are just not sure when any of this was going to end. We would however like to try again in 2021 in Lee's Summit. The tentative dates in 2021 will be the weekend of September 10-12. I have already talked to the Airport Manger and he is good with these dates. Sorry for the change, folks. See below for details. I won't beat a dead horse on the events leading up to this, so for a complete background on the aircraft/engine, please see my previous post. That said, here is my complete setup. Revmaster 2100D 94mm AA Pistons/Cylinders MOFOCO 041 Heads CB 2232 Camshaft SDS CPI Electronic Ignition (Dual) AutoLite 4164 Spark Plugs Sterba 54" x 54" Fixed Timing at 25 BTDC (to replicate the magneto) Compression Ratio: 9.5 RAF48 Airfoil Stock KR2S (~650 lbs empty weight) Clear Skies Light Winds On deck and aloft ALT: 3024 Temperature: ~58F Ground Testing/Runup - My previous post discussed getting a very powerful 3300 static RPM with the engine barely broken in. One thing I did not mention (and didn't really notice until today) is just how different the idle/low power throttle response is when compared to the stock VW cam. I set my idle at about 1000 rpm, and I will say, the CB 2232 has a pretty big lope at idle, which is one change I DON'T like. It makes the engine sound sort of rough, but still retains the throaty-ness at the same time. It isn't as big of a deal with the propeller off the plane, but as soon as you add the extra load on the engine, it is very noticeable. Where the stock VW cam had a pretty snappy throttle response throughout the entire RPM range, the CB 2232 has a pretty sluggish throttle response from about 1000-1500 RPM. Once above 1500 RPM, up to about 2000 the throttle response gets better, and above 2000 RPM everything is fairly normal. The Cam does state that the power band is from "1500-4500 RPM" range, but I did not think it would be this literal. As soon as you hit 1500 RPM, everything smooths out quite a bit, and by 2000 RPM it feels almost like the stock cam, with quick throttle responses. This is very important when coming in to land, because in the event of a botched landing and/or go-around, you have to really be prepared to add power, because it will take that extra second to spool up. It doesn't sound like much, but trust me, it is just enough to potentially get you into trouble if you're late to add power. If this lope or laggy throttle response is a potential annoyance to you, then do not go with this cam. In that case, the CB2280 may not be a bad option, since it has a decent power increase throughout the entire RPM range. However if you don't mind the lope and want the extra throaty-ness of the CB2232, this cam is a solid choice in my (limited) experience so far. Regarding the SDS ignition, I set the timing to 25 BTDC since I knew the engine would work in that configuration, since the magneto was fixed at this setting throughout the entire RPM range. The SDS does allow the user to configure the timing however they want at a particular RPM (10 BTDC at 1000 RPM, 12 at 1100 RPM, 25 at 2500 RPM, etc.) however since the engine was designed for 25 degrees BTDC at all RPM ranges, I just stuck with this for now. In addition, the SDS dual ignition incorporates a "Run-Up" feature, in which you can shut off one ignition coil for approximately 3 seconds, then shut the second coil off for approximately 3 more seconds, listening for the drop in RPM very similar to a magneto check. Mine both checked out okay, and I noticed no abnormalities between both ignition coils. The only downside (at least on the basic CPI version) is that when you're in "Run-Up" mode, you cannot monitor the RPM on the CPI controller to see just how much RPM is lost. You just kind of have to listen, and gauge it appropriately. The CPI controller does include a lead wire to hook up to an analog RPM gauge, which you could use to note the drop in RPM, however the lead wire itself is calibrated in thousands of RPM, not "hundreds" of RPM like my old gauge was (with the magneto). Basically my analog RPM needle is always in the very lower portion of the gauge since it thinks my engine is running 1/10th of it's actual speed. So for the time being, all I have is the digital readout on the CPI controller, and to re-iterate, cannot be used in the "Run-Up" mode. That's ultimately a minor complaint, and I completely forgot about it when this happened: Takeoff - After running up the engine on the ground, and running it up again, then again, to the point where I was confident the engine would not fall apart on me upon takeoff, I taxi'd onto the active runway and gave her full
KR> KR GATHERING 2020
KR Gathering 2020 We are still on track to have the KR Gathering the weekend of Sep 11-13 at Lees Summit Airport (KLXT). I just talked with the Airport manager. With the current Covid-19 restrictions, it would be cancelled. But no one is projecting they will last until September. I have not started ordering shirts/hats/meals yet because of the current situation. I plan to call him back up around the 1st of July to confirm. The restrictions affect our EAA Chapter as well, but still think September will be clear. Side note, the Chiefs are playing the Texans on Thursday night September 10th (if the NFL gets to play). I'll be at the game that evening, but I'll make sure everything is setup for arrivals, etc. Thanks, Rob Schmitt Kansas City, MO KR2S N1852Z ___ Search the KRnet Archives at https://www.mail-archive.com/krnet@list.krnet.org/. Re: KR> Yes I fly again.
Dr. F Hsu, Steff, It actually sounds like Stef is doing fine on solving this issue of nose heavy controls. Moving a battery is certainly not an easy solution. I have a ground adjustable but otherwise "fixed" trim tab on my elevator. I set it up during Phase I testing to provide for hands off flight with just myself abord. When I have a passenger, I use a bunge cord (same as his spring concept) to push the nose further down to relieve the control pressure needed for the heavier load. It works fairly well. Best option would be for a fully in-flight adjustable system, I see a lot of Ray Allen servo systems out there. But they do cost some money. Fixed trim tab and springs is much cheaper. KR> KR Flying
Finally got back in my KR and up for a flight this morning. Nice low winds, clear sky but a little cool at 25 deg F. But the plane absolutely loves to fly in this weather. Our traditional fly-out breakfast stop was still open for "Take Out" food. We-B-Smokin BBQ in Paola, KS (K81). But it seems I wasn't the only one who thought it was a great day to fly. Several others were heading in/out for breakfast. They are doing their best to stay in business in this current situation. Not a bad morning. Re: KR> ADS-B out opt out
Kayak, Afraid I don't know of any KRs nowadays operating in this fashion (no electrical system), which is probably why no one responded. Without electrical system, you are hand starting. If engine goes out, you have no inflight capability to restart. Your handheld radio will be very limited in duration. Staying out of controlled airspace is fairly easy if you don't live near any large airports. I flew without a transponder for years before I installed one. I always used a handheld comm radio myself for a few years as well. But, I always have had an electrical system. If you build your KR with no electrical, I do recommend you build it so you can add this stuff later. At some point you will want it if you end up flying it regularly. Re: KR> How to get started building?
Sam, Best to start with the "boat" by building the sides. Yes, you can source a lot of it from scratch, but there are limitations. You can probably source wood (spruce, douglas fir, and/or pine) lumber and cut it up down 5/8"x5/8", but it needs to meet the specs for grains/inch. I did some research long ago to see if I could do it myself. There are several references out there that give guidance on what to look for. I ended up buying the kit from either Aircraft Spruce or Wicks. I could never find a decent source for the specified "plywood" for the boat sides other than Aircraft Spruce or Wicks. Plans call for 3/32" thick, 3-ply. I could not find anything at a "lumber store" that came close. If you are a scrounger - I'd say the best/cheapest way to acquire the wood/plywood etc at the lowest cost possible is to find and buy someone's old project that was never competed. You might get lucky and be able to use the materials and still be able to modify it as you desire. Is it 100% necessary to order a kit from somewhere (Aircraft Spruce, Wicks, etc.) or can the entire plane be assembled completely from scratch? I'm planning to build my fuselage approximately 6" wider than the plans call for, which I'm guessing will require heavy modifications elsewhere, so I've been trying to avoid a kit at all costs. Work has kept me busy for the past couple of months and I haven't had any time to actually start building, but I do have a little bit of time off over the Holidays so I'm hoping I can finally begin here soon. Re: KR> Very quiet.
Maintenance update. Not much flying for me either, but I did finally get another breakfast run into Paola KS yesterday (K81). The reason for not much flying was that I just completed my annual. Took a little longer that usual as I found a couple minor pin hole leaks in two of my exhaust pipes. I ended up welding up a new #3 cylinder, and replaced a section of the #4 cylinder pipes. Did some cowling fiber glass cleanup as well. She finally got back in the air yesterday and all is well again. It was also my second flight with ADSB-out running on the uAvionics Skybeacon. I also reloaded the Stratux ADSB-In software lately as it was starting to get inconsistent. All was well with both the in/out, they are showing good information and traffic on my Foreflight software running on the IPAD mini. My KR life is good again. Re: KR> ADS-B opinions/recommendations
I need to add another thumbs up for the uAvionics systems. I installed a Sky Beacon on my KR2S Wing tip last weekend with minimal effort. It was the UAT version. It has the GPS built in and cost was $1849 through Aircraft Spruce. It is only ADSB out, but that is fine as I am already running a Stratux in. I already had a Mode C transponder in my airplane. Simple install right over the old Nav light. I used my IPhone to configure the unit for my airplane. I flew a short flight and received a FAA performance report with no issues. KR> KR Gathering 2020
KR Enthusiasts; I am planning to make a pitch at the 2019 KR Gathering to host the 2020 event at Lee's Summit Airport in Missouri (KLXT). I understand a vote will be required and the location needs to be approved. I also wanted to ensure the KR Net folks have an opportunity to review this as well regardless of if they can attend this year's Gathering. We held the 2017 Gathering at our airport and would like the opportunity to host it once again in 2020. Summary is as follows; Proposal for KR Gathering 2020 Lee's Summit Airport (LXT), Missouri Event Organizer - Rob Schmitt (KR2S - N1852Z) Dates: September 10-13, 2020 This event has been presented to both the Airport Manager (John Ohrazda), and the host EAA Chapter 91. I've looked at the site Craig mentions previously. It is definitely a "do-it-yourself" electronics project, and I suspect the cost is relatively low. Looks like they recently added assembly instructions - I don't recall this being on the site before. I'd love to hear of someone building this. Also looks like you can ow buy most of the kit parts from their "Store". Somewhere over the mountains maybe 50 miles west of Roanoke Va. the flight timer clicked from 999.9 hrs to 1000 hours. I has taken 13 1/2 years to get here. I have had a few issues over the years but the confidence in this plane/engine combo is unshaken. I really couldn't be happier with the choices I made back when I knew so much less about flying. I used to hear that the KR was not a great XC machine. The corvair was not near the development it is now. I took my chances anyway based on the bang for the buck theory. I have not been disappointed. simple math puts the plane at well over 125,000 miles traveled. Just this spring with modest flying time I have traveled about 4000 miles. Over the years there are about 10 trips to Florida. 5 to OSH, probably 5 to Mount Vernon, probably 10 Corvair colleges at a number of places, one trip to California and back, A bunch of fly inn's and the ever popular Sunday morning pancake breakfast just to make sure my wing loading stays high. I have talked to some guys over the years that started to fly and found themselves giving up because they didn't know what they would use it for and without purpose the cost became a burden. For me it is simple - I deserve my guilty pleasure...beyond the pleasure there are all the places I would not have seen, all the great people I would not have meet and become friends with, all the exceptional hospitality that I would not have experienced. Stef, I recently replaced brake pads on my airplane and had to release the pressure in the fluid at the lower brake fittings. Both my brakes were locked down until I released the pressure. Most of us just hold the brakes with our feet during run up. On other planes with in line hydraulic lock type parking brakes, they can be an issue with both bleeding off pressure, and sticking, although generally speaking once the valve is open, it shouldn't retain any pressure. Other possible issues can be an air lock in the brake reservoir if there is a venting issue since the fluid has to expand as it heats up. I have also seen the brakes hydraulically lock as they heated up when serviced with ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) rather than 5606 Hydraulic fluid. In that instance I drained the ATF out of the system and serviced with 5606 hydraulic to fix the problem. So the type of fluid in use is also important to proper function of the master cylinders. -Jeff Scott > Subject: KR> taxi testing > > Hi my Friends, > > Yesterday we moved our plane to the airport. Re: KR> Cylinder Heads Cracked - Best brand - Revmaster 2100d
Sam, I am currently running Great Plains cylinder heads on my Revmaster Engine. For spark plugs I am running the 14mm but Automotive Plugs (Bosch 7904). http://www.greatplainsas.com/sccylheads.html I also see the note that the Great Plains might be up for sale. So, I would give them a call before pursuing. I am still using the Bendix Dual Mag, but converted the spark wires and plugs to automotive to save money on future plug replacements. The spark plug conversion was done per http://www.g3ignition.com/index.html. I am on my second set of heads, but I also have about 825 hours on my engine. I bought the heads from GP, had them machined for 92mm and I had the dual spark plug option installed (looks like both 10mm or 14mm is an option per the web site). Cost was about $1000 when completed. I do like how the Great Plains folks installs the second set of plugs below without going through the valve cover. It is actually far better than how Revmaster does it with the bottom spark plug access through the valve cover. Sorry, I don't have a spare set laying around. I trashed my old set, they were used up. Thanks, Rob Schmitt KR2S N1852Z www.Robert7721.com -Original Message- From: KRnet On Behalf Of Samuel Spanovich via KRnet Sent: Sunday, March 31, 2019 3:11 PM To: krnet@list.krnet.org Cc: Samuel Spanovich Subject: KR> Cylinder Heads Cracked - Best brand - Revmaster 2100d If some of you remember I posted a while ago regarding a "chugging" problem with my Revmaster 2100d ("Calling All Revmaster Owners"). I have been hesitant to report back on here without a clear answer to what was wrong because I didn't want to waste anybody's time posting until I had a definite answer. After several days of troubleshooting, yesterday I finally found my answer: Cracked Cylinder Heads. *Note: I made a crucial mistake in my previous post of not explaining that this problem was "starting" to occur even before I changed my propeller, while still running the Culver 48" (low pitched) propeller. For those of you who suspected too high of an engine load and/or detonation with my new higher pitched Sterba, or advancing the throttle too fast, I greatly appreciate this insight, however this was not the case. I take 100% responsibility for not making this clear in the original post and for that, I do apologize. * Up to this point, the engine would start up normally, taxi, takeoff, cruise, and descend without incident. However after the descent, come time for a T&G or Go Around (basically, running a high power setting), the engine would sputter. Initially this was no more than a nuisance and I just had to go rally easy on the throttle up to full power, but eventually it got so bad that on a legitimate go around (not a practice), I almost didn’t have enough power to safely fly away, regardless of how slow I moved the throttle. Half power was about all I could manage out of the Little Engine That Could. Needless to say, I am no longer flying the bird until I get this problem fixed. I first checked the obvious: spark plugs and magnetos. I pulled out the 10+ year old Champion REL37Bs, andwow..they were nasty! They 10+ were reported at being cleaned at the last condition inspection, however I honestly couldn't believe they were firing at all. Not only were there carbon deposits EVERYWHERE, but the electrodes were getting the aging "football" shape. I elected not to clean them, and instead ordered 8 brand new plugs. As for the magneto, although old, never overhauled, and original to the engine (per the logbook) the Bendix 3000D fired all eight plugs flawlessly, producing a nice crisp spark. After installing the plugs, the engine initially ran very good and I thought all my problems had been solved. However the very next day, while test running the engine again, the problem returned just on the ground alone! When idling at 1500 rpm, there was no roughness, but when the power was increased to 2000-2500 rpm, the coughing/sputtering/roughness/vibration returned, and the engine was meeting all the symptoms of running on three cylinders. To confirm this, with the cowling still on and the engine idling, I took an infrared thermometer and measured the temperature of the EGT coming out of each exhaust pipe and noticed that front left cylinder was running much cooler than the other three. After some further troubleshooting, it was clear the cylinder had very little compression, so off came the head. As all of you VW operators can imagine (or have experienced)….there was a fairly solid crack in-between the valves, despite being the standard 65HP heads. I have been researching the heck out of new heads, from CB performance, Mofoco, EPI, etc. and have found that there seems to be cooling/cracking issues with just about every single one of them. Because of this, I am ha

I was going to point out that the sharp inside corner channel is almost always the much weaker architectural 6063 aluminum, but it looks like you've done your homework on that also. One would think nvAero would be a source of this channel now, so maybe Steve will chime in on this, unless he can't buy it either. Aircraft Spruce has some 1" square 60601-T6 tubing (see https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/mepages/alumtubing-sq.php), but it's 1/4" rather than 1/8" wall. Of course there's the "minor" detail of having to mill out one side to make the box into a channel, but that's quick work for a guy with a mill. I was going to point you to onlinesmetals.com, but they don't have the channel either. They do have some "rounded corner" box cross-section material, which should work assuming there's no interference to rotation. See https://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?id=1761&step=2&top_cat=60 to see what I mean by that. It has an outside radius as well as an inside radius. I probably haven't told you anything you didn't already know, and there are other options as well, (larger channel with spacers, etc), but I'll spare your time with that. For others, as a general rule, the sharp internal radius angle and channel is 6063, which is not nearly as strong as 6061-T6, and the sharp corner exacerbates the weakness, depending on how it's loaded. If you're not sure what you have, but have some known 6061-T6, drill a hole in it, and then try the mystery metal. 6063 drills like butter by comparison! 6063 is a bit more shiny than 6061 also. Worst case though would be to use 6063 and make sure you inspect it every year, or to be absolutely sure, just use steel. That's not a huge amount of steel, although the moment arm is long, and the change in CG direction is usually not preferable. For 6063 in both 1" channel and 1.25" channel, see https://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?id=297&step=2&top_cat=6 . That's probably the simplest option, but not the best. Re: KR> Calling all Revmaster Owners. Exhaust Valve or Carb?
Steve, Probably need to confirm a couple things. Is this a Revflow carb? Do you have the Dual Bendix mags? I have both so this would only apply to these. I have run into "rough" engine running when I've pulled the carb heat "on" in colder weather. 65F does not seem to be that cold though. I stopped messing with carb heat long ago with this carb. I never pull it unless I really suspect carb ice. And then only briefly. It makes the engine go pretty rich, with the denser cold air it can cause my engine to stumble. Check your carb mixture at full throttle. You may be way too rich already at full throttle. The carb needs to be set up per the Revflow instructions using an EGT if you have one installed. I have the manual if you need it. Dual mag. If you have dual mag, check it out on each side. You can do it on a ground run up and not have to get back up in the air. See if maybe you have a mag with issues on one side or the other. It could be the mag or wires if they are getting old. Re-Check prop bolts. Make sure they are tight and did not come loose during the flight. Inspect the prop for potential defects. Good to hear about the Sterba Prop. I got the same results when I went from 54x50 to 54x54. I run Marvel Mystery oil in the fuel and add some to the oil to help keep "lead" buildup down, and only run unleaded mogas (no ethanol) in the winter. It seems to help keeping the engine cleaner. Exhaust Valve or Carb? Before I get into the main point of my message, I would like to shout out to Ed Sterba at Sterba Propellers. I received my brand new 54" x 54" for my Remaster 2100D, put it on, and took N6399U for a ride. With my Culver 54" x 48", I had decent climb out but only averaged about 104-105 knots at a relatively high RPM of ~3300 rpm during cruise. With the Sterba 54" pitch, the climb-out remained essentially unchanged at about 700-900 fpm, sometimes >1000 fpm on occasion, however the cruise speed increased greatly. My old spinner (for the Culver) did not fit the Sterba so I test flew without it, however I still managed around 110 knots cruise at about ~3200 RPM, almost 100 less than before. I am hoping once I figure out the spinner situation, I'll get maybe in the 111-112 knot range. All in all, 6 knots may not sound like a lot, but for me I was greatly impressed for such a simple upgrade. I was also impressed that the climb rate remained very similar; there was no "night and day" difference in climb that I have witnessed on most planes with climb/cruise props. NOW, for the "main point" of this message. After cruising around for a while with the new propeller, I started a descent from about 2500' MSL. Brought the power back to about 2800 RPM, put the Carb Heat On, and descended about 500 fpm back to pattern altitude (2500 MSL --> 1300 MSL, so a little more than two minutes). I arrived at the "abeam" while I was still slightly descending and slowing down, so I just left the power where it was, put the speed brakes out, and flew a racetrack pattern into short final. As I approached the runway, I figured I would try a touch and go to see how different the new propeller felt on a go around. As I ran the engine up to full power, initially everything felt okay, however as I got about 200 feet off the ground, *The Engine Started to make this God-Awful Chugging Noise with Uncomfortable Amounts of Vibration!* As unnatural as this was, *I Pulled some Power Back To About Mid Range, and the Chugging Stopped and the Engine Ran began to run Smoothly. *I continued to climb out at about 200 fpm, and when all seemed okay, I made a very gracious crosswind turn and* Very Graciously Applied More and More Throttle. *Upon doing this, the *Chugging/Vibrations Returned. *After this, I set the power to where the engine was smooth, and did not touch it until the runway was made. I landed safely, took a deep breath, and taxi'd back to the hangar. >From the time I started the descent and for the remainder of the flight, the engine *mixture was at full rich*. The* carb heat was on when I started the descent, and remained on until I added power during the go-around, when I turned it off*. Once the chugging started, I turned the heat back on and *it appeared to have no effect whatsoever. * This is why I am calling all Revmaster Owners, because.any opinions/tips on what to look for are greatly appreciated I am suspecting it is either a carburetor problem of some sort, or worst case the exhaust valves sticking (I have done some research and it seems early model Revmasters, like mine, are notorious for this happening). Re: KR> N6399U Sam Spanovich Here Again: Thank you All/Radio Problems
I would stay away from the MGL V6. I have one in my KR2S, but it is not great. I was very difficult to get the radio to work with my existing antenna. I had to build up a pretty big ground plane to make it work, so I do not recommend it. My original ICOM A4 hand held was better. Was going to ask politely, if anybody has a recommendation on a good replacement radio. I currently have an TKM MX11, and was just going to order another unit, however if there are better units out there (and I'm sure there are, I am just not "too familiar with avionics), I would love to hear what you all have to say. Re: KR> Wing Leveler
Craig, I tried to use a RC servo for my KR elevator trim. The DAR would not accept it. His issue was that if the servo lost power it didn’t have a lock up mode unpowered. The possible result was flutter in the trim tab. I had to remove it. Worth checking before you go that route. Re: KR> Epoxy
Richard, Not sure I agree with your assessment of West Systems. See there web site at; https://www.westsystem.com/ I have used it with cotton flox for structural gluing. And with micro for non-structural. It is used extensive in boat building for all purposes. A better system to use is ProSet it is the same manufacturer. If you are looking to save money another option is Jeffco and only AS sells it. It is a structural epoxy and does have a good pot life if you are doing a large project and it's not 90+ deg. Mark, Both will work fine. I think that Aeropoxy was just a little less expensive. It also takes longer to cure/harden which isn't a bad thing when doing such a large layup as a wing skin.
