I have an original KR2 built to ken' and Ed's revised plans, and I have

Does anyone have any advice on how to increse it?
They only move about 5 deg. up and 10 down. That can't be enough.
Any help please.

Ok Guys I was doing some Taxi tests yesterday with my KR2 and found two
problems, first one is the engine idel, I couldn't get it to sit still on
the runway at the lowest throttle setting so I need to look at that again.
And the other problem is the one I need the most help on.,My brakes.
Apparently I still have air in the lines that I can't seem to get out. Can
anyone give me some advice on how to bleed piper master cyclinders with a
remote resivore.
Thanks

I was thinking of giving Orma's method a try.
Do you belive that the post office has yet to send me any thing on that

KR> KR Paint job

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville

Hi Guys , just wanted to give an update on the painting of my KR.
I decided to go with the white , and used a very good polyurathane enamal,
with a HVPL gun. This time no runs or saggs, and very little difficulty
geting it to look decent.
I regret not being able to get the silver to look good but I am really happy
with the way she looks now. The white does alot to hide imperfections, and
the self leveling polyurathane sprays great .
I will not be able to fly her to Airventure, as I will not have the 40 hrs
flow off of her yet. But I am thinking of trailering her there.

KR> Prefab bits vs self manufactured?

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
I used A Great planes gear spring, they are just as good at half the
price.you will still have to fab. your own mounting brackets, but that is no
big deal . just use 6"x8"x4"wide 1/2"thick 6061 Angle stock mounted to the
forward of the spar(x3). you have to use doublers 3/8"thick to clear the
crossmember that is in front of the spar.
send me your e-mail address and I'll send you a few pics. of my instalation.

KR> KR Paint

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Hi James,
They said that they may set by themselves to a satisfactory condition, but
may not. I put her out in to the sun again today just to see how bad it is
,and I am reasured that there wasen't as many today. but I will decide what
too do on sunday after she sits outside all day in the sun. If there are
only a few areas that are bad, I'll fix them and just plan on repainting the
intire plane this fall.
If this is the case please be kind with your evulation of her. I can hide
alot of the defects with the placards, but not all of them.
BTW The manager of the dead letter office in Atlanta is still trying to
locate all the parts, I am very disgusted with them at this point.

KR> KR Paint

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Well Guys , I am very depressed with what happened today. It was about one
week ago that I shot the finel coats of paint on my KR fusalage, and today I
decided to finish the wing outer panels . I pulled the fusalage out in to
the yard to clear the shop for the wings , in to 85 deg. direct sunlight.
after shooting the last coat on the wing, I went out to play with the
engine, and discovered to my dismay, that I had bubbles under the new paint
in several areas.
After talking to the folks at polyfiber, they said that I had solvent
outgassing from the primer. Now I will admit that I was some what relived
that it wasen't delaminating of the fiberglass,I still have a crappy paint
job now.
They also said that I picked just about the hardest paint to shoot(Navada
Silver), for a novice painter(Me).
So after wasting $250 on silver paint I guess I should conform to everyone
else and paint it white.
I was not completly happy with the paint job before the bubbles now I'm
disgusted with it. I do love the color, but I doubt I have the experence to
get it to look right.
I do not know if I will be ready for Airventure.
Damn, looks like I'm driving again.

I have been thinking that maybe I need to put her back in the sun to" Bake "
her again and identify the bad areas, then trim out the bubble with a razor
knife to release the trapped solvent and remove the loose paint.I think this
would allow me to feather edge the damaged areas without disturbing the good
paint to much.
It will take about three days to get the new paint from aircraft spruce, and
for my next weekend off to paint it.

Well guys I got the fusalage painted today, she is drying as of right now, I
have two areas that I need to redo because of runs but other then that it
doesnt look that bad.
I am here to tell you that silver paint is very hard to shoot, and only with
an HVLP gun of good quality.
Two gal. of paint are enough to finish a KR2, if you don't make too many
mistakes.
I used Polyfiber enamel,Nevada silver.
When you see her at airventure please be kind on your evauation of her, I am
not a pro painter, but she looks nice enough to fly around for awile.

KR> KR paint job

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville

Well guys, in between rain storms and overtime at work, I am finaly ready to
shoot the top coats on my bird.I am still using Stits Navada silver.
Now before I get flooded with e-mail, I did a test for radio interference.
Now I know that this is not a very accurate way to test it but I sprayed two
coats of paint on a cardborad box, and transmitted to an aircraft in flight
from underneath it, I belive this would simulate any interference form the
paint. I am also using a canopy mounted ant.
I have finished wet sanding the entire airframe and finding areas to spot
puddy, I will apply a sealer coat before the paint.
My plan is to camp with my plane at airventure this year, is anyone else
going to do this?

KR> Alternator

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Try a Chevy sprint or Geo alt for the 3 cycl. engine. it is 50 amp and just
about as small as the get on a car.
I use a Kabouta dynamo, with a Harly Davidson reg. on a volkspower case and
driven by a modified gland nut/pully.
I use a Rotax starter now, but when it fries I'll go with a subarue starter
and adapt. plate. My batt. is a Dry cell for jet skis .
I have a strobe, Radio, DG,fuel ,hobbs ,fuel boost pump and primary ignition
driven off this set up and I still have about 6 amps to spare.
Do the math on your amp load ,you may not need all that power.
I have used this set up on two aircraft with no problems.

keep up and want to go with an automotive type alternator that can deliver
more along the lines of 45 - 60 amp output. Any suggestions by any who are
using them, actual applications. I have the common Type I VW with Diehl

know that we are subject to the wims of the homeland security act, and there
may have been some new rules.

KR>Sanding and lovin it

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Thanks for all the info guys, but I get the impression that I've led you
astray about the finish on my bird, It was not about pinholes as much as it
was about wavyness of the layups, like when you look down the beam of the
wings there is some wavy countoures to it, they were all hand layed up
panels and I will never be able to match the finish of a vaccuum bag part.
And I have used that bondo spot puddy for years, and it does work
great, but needs to be primed over. I have saved about 1/2 gal of primer for
this.
Thanks again guys.
Now please when you see her at a fly in or airshow don't judge her too
harsly on the finish, but be glad that there is another added to the flying
ranks.

KR>Sanding and lovin it

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Gee Guys,
You are making ME worry about the quality of my finish.
After two coats of smooth prime, and three of u2k, I have decided that I will
never reach even close to a perfect finish, So I made the command decision
to declare it done, and ready for paint. Small imperfections be damed. I
want to fly this thing this spring and I don't want to add any more wt. with
fillers.
I have a rare KR2 in the respect that it only weighs 535lbs. empty(before
finish paint).
Now for a new one to chew on, is it permisable to make your own Data plate
from raw stock?
Or do you have to use an approved plate?
Thanks

Joe,

My experience has been, that after the Smooth Prime, comes the real priming
and sanding. At least then, you can wet sand it. There is no way that you
will have all the pin holes out of it after smooth prime, so now the real
work begins.

The nice thing about having that layer of Smooth Prime on there is that, if
you put on a grey primer, you quickly know when it is time to stop sanding,
look for pin holes, fill them, prime, and start sanding all over again.

Ain't it fun?

Sorry about that test Guys, new computer!

Anyway , I have a KR2 that was assembled with hughs glue and some T-88, not to
mention all the layups with west system epoxy.
Here is what I'm worried about, does anyone see any problems with these glues
in cold weather? Not in applying them but ,but in using the plane in fridged
weather.
Do the joints become brittle with cold?
Till now , it has always been in a heated shop, but now it sits in whatever the
outside temp is, and I am worried that I may be stressing critical joints in
the airframe.

BTW I found a print shop here in Toledo the will make any vinel lettering or
logo for a very reasonable price.

If That antenne doesn't work then I'll go with a turtledeck mounted whip.

Hi All,

Can anybody share with me their successes with drum cable operated brakes
such as the Azuza?? compared to disk hydraulic callipers.

Seems the drums are a lot less expensive and just as easy to install,
though I'm not sure how efficient they are.
I'm planning on using 6" wheels and a tri gear.

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Hi everyone,
I would like to tell you how my family and I spent this Blessed day, first
we spent the morning at the Air Force Museum on Wright -Patterson, and saw
all of the fantastic aircraft on display. It truly is worth the trip.
Everytime I visit,it feels like I am walking on hallowed ground.
Then we went to the memoral on the hill ,over looking the site of the
brothers first hanger and flying field. This too was a walk in the presence
of greatness.
But to truly make this a speciel day ,I felt that we needed to pay our
respects to the Bishop's Boys in person.
There was more then a few wreaths and flowers on the family marker , and we
said a few words of thanks for the sacrifices and achivements that they
made.
I was disaponted not being able to attened the recreation at Kill devil
hills, but spending the day at aviations birthplace and with the fathers of
all, was just as special .

Hey there netters. I am looking for a sample of a fixed gear for the KR2s
that I can make my own with. Also the rim, brake disc and mounting bracket
with axle.I have 3 relatives that are machinists and I intend in no way
to pay out a thousand dollars for what should be maybe a couple hundred
bucks worth of stuff. The same type goods on any other vehicle would be
priced much much less. So if you have a junk one laying around and are
anticipating getting new stuff, maybe we can help each other out. The one
relative owns his own equipment and does jobs on the side, so maybe we could
get a group run going. Any one???

KR>Wheels and stuff

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Also Steve , since you are asking, I may be able to send you the 3 angle
brackets to mount the spring gear ((6"x8"x 4"x1/2" 2024 t3) to your spar.
you will need to drill the holes and clean up the rough edges but will save
you time. I may have enough stock left over to cut 3, 41/2" brackets out of
.

KR>KR;radios

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Hi Netters,
well after kicking around the problems of using aluminum pigmented paint. I
have a new question.
Having decided to use the silver paint scheme now I have to address the best
location and installations of the antennas for the nav /com handheld and elt.
As for the ELT , I decided to install it on the back of the "package tray" and
extend threw the turtle deck a few inches, insulated by a rubber grommet.
I would like to do this with the comm. antenna as well. mounted a few inches in
front of the ELT antenna, with both on the center line.
Does anyone see a problem?I would like to keep drag to a min.
Thanks

Tim,

I have two points. First, the ELT will transmit on 121.5 Mhz, right in the
middle of your comm frequencies. When the antennas are in close proximity,
it will send an extremely high level of power into the receiver. That might
fry it. The solution is to keep the ELT and comm antennas as far apart as
is possible.

Secondly, 90% of the signal is transmitted in the part of the antenna
nearest the feedpoint. The top half of the antenna is there to make it
resonant, but radiates only about 10% of the signal. If you in effect have
the majority of the antenna shielded, then your signal will bounce around
the inside of the plane like inside a microwave oven.

Have you thought about imbedding the antennas into the canopy? It might not
be vertical polarization, but at least it would radiate outside the plane.
Just a thought.

KR>carb heat box

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Yes , GM used a small elec. grid heater under the carbs on chevettes and
citations. it is 12 v and easily adapted to use as pre or post heat.
Go to a junk yard and get one they may just give it to you.
It is part of the gasket, but can be cut out.
I used one on my Sonerai and it worked great.

KR>KR Testing

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Hi Everyone,
I just finished testing my knew engine on the KR, and would like to tell of the
results.
First , the nomenclature of this engine a 1775cc,with a oo9 ignition and blue
super coil,Kubota 14 amp. Dynamo/alt.
with a HD regulator and drycell Batt. Duel port heads and a Zenith model 68
carb.

First I had some difficulty getting it started and had to use starter fluid, but
after wile it fired over. After setting the timing and mixture , I got in and
slowly ran it up. That is when something amazing happened, with full up
elevator, the tail tied down and brakes applied, at 1/2 throttle, the tail came
up!
The outer wing panels were not installed and I only had about two gal. of fuel
in the header tank.
Has this happened to anyone else? I never seen a control surface generate that
much lift with full opposite deflection.

Hi Dan,
I have fuselage mounted spring gear.
I don't believe that it is the problem. And now I really don't think that I
have a problem. Given the amount of thrust, and I believe some lift from the
stub wings. but after I put some more thought to it I realized that I may
have created a ground effect from the fence that I had the tail tied
to.(6'stockade), it was 6 feet behind the tail.
I plan on doing more tests in an open field.

KR>KR Testing..and the tail comming up......

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Hi Jerry .
No problems here. yesterday I was playing around with her again and this
time I had nothing behind it and she behaved normally and predictably. with
75% power, the tail came up from neutral and was very controllable. I was
able to hold it from 1" to 2' with no adverse reactions. I believe I created
a vortices last time that produced the "reversed lift".
I will do as you advise and check my angle of incidence , but I don't think
I'll find any problems.
I am not use to a tail dragger behaving this way. I had a Sonerai I that
wouldn't raise the hail in a hurricane, and I like the ease of the kr2 .
Thanks.

It might be TOO simple; but might I suggest that you check your horizontal
stab incidence to your wing stubs chordline. If it is over about three
degrees, you have a large problem..

KR>paint

Hi Mark,
Well I'd be lying if I said you didn't scare the hell out of me about using
silver paint.( I have two Gal.)
Do you see any problems using a handheld with it's own antenna not grounded
to the airframe?Would it be the same as in a Spam can? I don't plan on using
the Nav on it as this is a day VFR only plane(mine, not the design)
As far as the feather fill, I too am not trying to achieve perfection but
get close as I can within reason and feather fill is said to be great at
sanding and filling imperfections, But I still want the UV protection from
the smooth prime.

KR>sonerai landing gear

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Hi James,
yes you can use the Gpas gear on a KR2 but I recommend that you mount them
un cut to the fuselage, and not to the outer spar. this is less stress on
the spar, and much easier to retro-fit. use 6x8x1/2" angle alum. for
mounting brackets and doublers on the forward spar.
If you are interested in this I will go in to greater detail on how I did
it.

KR>Kr Progress

HI everyone,
I just finished putting the third coat of smooth -prime on the bottom of my KR2
. This marks the completion of the retrofit to the fixed gear (Fuselage mount,
spring gear from great plains,).
This stuff is great to work with and sands very well, to bad it is so expensive.
I made my mounting brackets from 6x8x1/2" , 6061 extruded alum. angle (X3) and
doublers on the forward part of the spar to clear the cross member on the front
of the spar. I cut three 4x6" holes in the floor , and used the original holes
on the spar for mounting the angle brackets.
With her on her back I did the alignment of the spring gear, and used the
original holes for mounting to the brackets. I then cut a foam wedge and
glassed it in to the bottom of the fuselage to flair in the leading edge of the
gear.
Filling the holes from the original gear was a lot of sanding but straight
forward, and now you could never tell it had retracts.
I plan on top coating the belly before I put her back on her gear,as to not
have to do it on my back, but to also have it done, and allow me to concentrate
on the top.

I sounds to me like you are trying to reinvent the wheel.
It also sounds like you have no plan to benefit the widow of the man that
designed this plain and construction concept.
Are you going to buy parts from R/R inc. ?Pay them royalties?
This little plain was meant to be a homebuilt, and built by people that
could not afford a Cessna.
You are trying to stand on the shoulders of others to make a buck.
I for one, do not want to see a bunch of "factory built" KR's showing up on
NTSB reports and dragging down the name of this well designed and conceived
aircraft.
Come up with your own concept, and hire a Aeronautical engineer to invent
your new store-bought and leave the KR's to those that love to build and fly
them.
I for one will not help you, and I don't think you will find much help here!

Perhaps, the problem here is the way you presented your self to us,
Surly you can see why some of us are apprehensive to things such as your

if you have an arrangement with Jeanette, you should have been up front with
it.
As vast as the internet is and originating in another country, skepticism
should be expected.
If you are only seeking information about a possible business venture that
has the blessing of R/R Inc., Then there are many people more qualified to
give it then I.
I too am interested why you choose to built out side the United States.
I am also a former Marine, But I fail to see why it should be an issue.
As far as your parameters for your finished product, my personal opinion is
that it is over built and too heavy in your configuration. Just my humble

KR>Kr2 Rebuild

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Hi Netters,
Well between working back to back double shifts at work ,I have managed to get
a great deal of work done on my KR.
First, she is no longer a retract. I have just completed the conversion over to
the fuselage mounted spring gear with hydraulic disc brakes. I have filled the
holes in the wings and flaring in the gear to the bottom of the fuselage.
I am now re designing the tail wheel and rake of the tail spring.
I have rebuilt the engine, and changed the carb to a updraft Zenith, and a 009
dist. with a high output coil.
I have a starter and acc. case but no longer using a mag.
I have changed the alternator to a Kubota 14 amp. dynamo and a Harley Davidson
14amp. regulator. That is belt driven off the flywheel end of the crank.
I used a standard gland nut with the bearing removed, milled out to a 5/8" hole,
and welded a shaft to it and matched a pulley to it from a old alt.
I have also solved my aileron problem by carving out holes in the wings and
ailerons , drilling threw each rivet, and installing a ss screw and nutplate(to
the back of the false spar) then floxing in the nutplate and filling the holes.
I am hopping to have her painted and reassembled by the end of September.

KR>Ailerons

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Ok Guys , I'm back from the Holy land and making great progress on N7038V.
I have turned my attention to the hinge mounts for the Ailerons, and per some
suggestions to correct the "rivet" installation, I have begun to flox in the
nut plates to the spars.
I would like to repeat my steps for you, and welcome input.

First, I removed the rivets from one side of one of the four hinges to maintain
alignment.
Then I drilled out the holes to 7/32" , and placed the two lug nut plates in
the holes, then check to see if the holes in the hinge were on center.
I then used #2 ss screws to hold the plates down, and traced the outline of
them, then removed them.
Using a dremal and a router bit, I made sockets for them to be recessed below
the top of the spar, and then reinstalled them with the screws in the mounting
lugs.
I then folded the hinge back down to check alignment and flushness.
I dipped the 8-32 truss head machine screws in wax the lightly screwed them in
the nut plates.
Lastly I mix some "West systems" epoxy with flox to a peanut butter
consistency, and with a wood trowel filled the holes and encapsulated the nut
plates.
I then used the remaining mixture to make a test piece, to test the strength to
destruction,of this type of installation.
Anyone see any problems?
Thanks

Can anyone tell me where to find the mounting brackets for a spring gear to
mount to the bottom of the fuselage of a KR2?

Check with Grove.. http://www.groveaircraft.com/landing_gear.html

Also I would like to see pictures or a web site of KR2's with spring gear
landing gear.

This is not a Grove, but it is a one piece aluminum gear that is very
similar to the Grove. I bought it from someone who was parting out stuff
and I don't know where it came from.

Thanks David,
I guess the only apprehension I have about mounting the gear this way is
cutting in to the floor to "Submerge"the gear. I am worried about structural
integrity.
I was thinking about just cutting holes threw the floor, mounting the plates
flush with the bottom , mounting the spring then flaring it in with glass.
Does anyone see a problem with this?
I am committed now, my retracts are removed and packed up for Oshkosh.

Help Guys,
I made a horrible discovery today, and I need some help. On doing an inspection
of the wing outer panels, I discovered that the original builder had used SS
rivets to mount the piano hinges to the spars, and one came loose!

I scanned the plans but could not find anything about the installation of the
aileron, just the control horn .
What kind of fastener should be used? and how many?
Could someone please go in to detail about this most critical assembly.
I have spent a great deal of time finishing this little bird, and hopefully
this is no big deal.
At this point, I thought The wings were complete, ready for paint.

KR>Carb fuel pressure

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
I too have a EFS2 carb on my 1750cc engine. If I was ever to change
anything on the set up it would be the intake manifold to the GPAS unit for
the KR, I have a "Facet" fuel pump for starting and landing, but normally
don't need it on.

Ok Guys,
I am getting flooded with questions about the fuselage now that I have
offered it up for free. Please and again I emphasize, please only e-mail me
with questions if you meet the following criteria:

1) You will pick up the fuselage or
2) You will arrange for all shipping, including having the freight company
crate the fuselage for you or you can come to Wisconsin and crate it up. The
fuselage is located 25 miles west of Milwaukee.
3) You will make an honest attempt to complete the plane.

Now, if you have already e-mailed me once and can still meet the above
criteria and really want to commit yourself to this project, then e-mail me
again and we will make arrangements.

KR>KR landing gear/brakes

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Hi everyone,
I have a couple of new questions.
Awhile back , when I wrote about putting toe brakes on my Kr2, a gentleman
warned me to beef up the rudder control horn else I would bend it pressing to
hard on the brakes. I have found this to be true.
On my sonerai this was never a issue due to the metal construction of the whole
tail, but on the Kr, I am hesitant to change the design.
Does anyone know of a way to reinforce this area without doing major surgery or
adding to much additional weight?
And has anyone ever used a hand brake mounted to the stick to apply both brakes
at the same time? I had this Idea when I was contemplating the control horn
problem.
Also I have retracts, if it matters.
Thanks everyone,
Tim

KR>hot battery

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
No that this could happen to a KR , but I want to write about something that
happened to a bank of batteries that we use at our water plant to start our
high service pumps.
When I flipped the switch on one of these pumps last Wednesday, there was an
immediate loud explosion from the back room where the batteries are kept.
Upon investigating I found a mist of atomized electrolyte in the air and
battery parts in a 25 ft. radius of the bank.
I will use a dry cell battery in my KR2 from now on, as far as I know these
cannot explode if use properly, and need no ventilation.
I had one in my Sonerai I for two years with no problems.
I was the same one that they use in Jet skis.

KR>Gel Batteries

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
Not to pick a point at you Jim, But the Hindenburg fire was caused by the
dope on the fabric of the outer skin, the hydrogen explosion was secondary,
but still Very violent.
The Drycell I use is a "Oddessay P545" out of a Jet ski application , from a
battery wholesale house here in Toledo. it works great.

I put a gel battery in my KR-2. It's worth a few extra bucks to not have to
worry with venting and getting rid of the acid vapors.

Batteries explode because they generate hydrogen gas when they are charged.
Look at a picture of the Hindenberg to see what hydrogen can do.

I found a small company that sells a full range of gel batteries. They are
most professional in their service and shipping, and their prices are
competitive. Their catalog can be seen at b and c specialty.com.

Can anyone give me some designed spec's and materials, Installation

Does R/R have any plans supplements?

I would prefer to copy a proven set up rather then blaze new ground.

KR>vert. card compass

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
HI Ed,
I too was a Sonerai driver that was lurking on the KRnet to glean more
information on different installations of the VW, and the more I read ,the
more I fell in love with the KR2. I purchased a set of plans to study, and
as luck would have it, a friend sold me his pride an joy for a song.
The wife only has enough tolerance for one mistress in my life so the
sonerai had to go.
They are good little ships, and I am in no way say that they are better or
worse then a KR2,just that it had one less seat.
I will always love that little bird, and if you need any help with yours
,just ask, I'd be glad to help anyway I could.
