I've been using the Ching Shen tires that replaced the Lambs (see
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/lgpages/lambtires_tubes.php ) for a
source. I get the 8 ply tires, but have no idea if the 4 ply or 6 ply would
wear better. I'd have sent you the Wicks link but I'd rather take a beating
than try to find anything from their web site. I keep about 35 psi in them.
Any less and I think they are more prone to tube pinching, any more and they
are too springy to land on. This time around I'm going to put some tire
sealant in them, in addition to liberally coating everything with loads of
talcum powder. Walmart sells some tire sealant that never hardens, it just
runs around in there waiting for a leak. I don't think that will lead to
any kind of balance problem, but I will find out Sunday afternoon after the
new tires are installed and I fly it.

My tailwheel is just a 4" "homebuilder's special", also from Wicks or AS&S.
See
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/lgpages/homebuilder_tailwheel.php for
that one. I've had no problems of any kind with my tailwheel, and although
I bought a replacement wheel, the old one looks so good that I've just left
it on the plane and will continue to fly with it until something happens to
it...

I have the same tires on mine as does Mark but no landings yet as I am still
under construction. I have experienced one of them going flat and so suspected
the valve core assy or tube. What I found was that it was likely is tubes
valve seat or core and cured it by installing a metal valve stem extention.
Not a bad Idea anywaybecause it made it easieir to inflate. Take care on the
length of extention though because of the limited clearance of the wheel pants.

Wicks Aircraft used to be my favorite, but last time I checked their online
catalog, I got a bunch of hits for everything BUT tires, so now it's
Aircraft Spruce. They are made by Cheng Shin, but started out as "Lambs",
and are often called that today. The supposedly come in 4, 6, and 8 ply
versions, but it's been a long time since I've seen an 8 ply, so I buy 6 ply
tires. If you'd seen my last pair when I took them off, you'd know why I
want 8 ply tires...

I wondered about 8 ply tires, went to www.aircraftspruce.com and keyed in
"Lamb tire", and immediately was staring at 6 and 8 ply Lamb tires. I've
ordered two 8 ply tires for next time. By comparison, the
www.wicksaircraft.com site shows nothing for "Lamb tire", and even just
"tire" doesn't get you much, mostly everything BUT tires. It does work for
"cheng tire", but only shows one, and it's not a 11x4-5.00, even though I
know they sell them. Very frustrating website, and all but useless. They
apparently don't realize how important a functional website is to their
business. I've learned that I can beat my head against their website for
ten minutes and leave frustrated, and then have my order executed about a
minute later with AS&S. I've been a Wicks fan forever, and deliberately
paid more for Wicks items over many years, but the website ended that for
me.

There are probably other sources for these, and anybody that knows of them
is welcome to post them. There are other 11x4-5.00 tires out there, but the
tread patterns are probably more conducive to gaining traction to mow lawns,
rather than maintaining directional stability down a runway. Then again, it
may not make any real difference.

But the main reason I'm replying again to this is to mention tubes. I've
been buying Larin tubes from Fleet Farm or somewhere like that. They are
considerably heavier than the tubes you get from AS&S and Wicks. Since I
started using these tubes and spreading loads of talcum powder inside the
tures and on the tubes during installation, I've had zero flat tires. It's
only a couple of ounces of weight per tube, but that's one place I don't
mind carrying extra weight.

The Aero Classic tires are about twice the price of the Cheng Shins, but
maybe they'll last twice as long, for all I know. They both appear to be 8
ply though. I notice even Van's sells the 11x4-5.00 as a nose wheel tire,
but it's more expensive than AS&S, at $21 rather than $17.50.

I average about 400 of my very sloppy landings on each pair of these tires,
so in the grand scheme of things, I don't mind spending $40 to swap them out
every year or so.

I've met with Scott Wicks about it personally, and talked to him on the

I feel exactly the same. I have always favored Wicks, but lately, I go to
Spruce first and I don't like doing so. Also, Wicks just doesn't have the
stuff anymore. Are they going into the car business? Well, if that is what
they want, then that is what they will get. Tell Janet that I am sorry.
Wicks has always been good to me, but it is just too hard to do business

As Jim Morehead recommends, I also am happy with Desser.

I bought these tires a year ago, less than $20 each and I got free, next
day ground shipping from L.A. to San Diego.

http://shop.desser.com/IW_Products.m4p.pvx?;MULTI_ITEM_SUBMIT

Pretty scary they're so inexpensive, but they've been fine. And I've
been using Cheng Shin's on my motorcycles for 30 years. They are decent,
reliable tires.

I must have a couple hundred landings on them and, although they are
showing wear, they still withstood fully loaded high-altitude takeoffs
recently. Take-off's are harder on tires than landing, according to a
piece in the current AOPA magazine. High altitude (above 5000 ft.)
take-offs with crosswinds are harder still since you have to hold that
bugger down and get it going really fast before you let it off the
runway. Otherwise, you'll get blown off the runway and to the side with
gusts and not have enough airspeed to climb. Then you're at the mercy of
any obstacles around the airport as you nurse it along in ground effect
until you get enough airpseed to climb. Visual cues will tell you its
rotation time but that can be a big mistake at altitude. I just about
lost it on takeoff in high winds at Raton, NM coming back from last
year's Gathering trip. One KR builder crashed his plane at St. John's
AZ a few years ago in just such a scenario. I was just discussing that
incident with the airport manager there. That plane was rebuilt and was
for sale a year or two ago.

Anyway, I recommend Desser.

I've purchased tires from Desser for years now. I ran their retreads
on the Tripacer and they were great tires. There was a big
difference between the first run tires I was using and the
retreads. The difference was noticeable on the first landing after I
changed tires. They are a heavier, more substantial tire.

KR> Tires

2009-10-26 Thread rdrace...@aol.com

I noticed on the Desser site there was an 11/400-5 8 PLY AERO CLASSIC (NEW
VERSION) listed for a unit price of 39.75. If that's a pair it doesn't
sound too bad.

That link to Desser worked last night when I tested it. It appears they
are in the middle of re-doing or updating their website. Anyway, the
link was to this tire:

410/350-5 4 PLY CHENG SHIN TIRE Unit Price 17.95

There is no part number that I can find, but if you search for Cheng Shin
under the category "All Products", it will come up.

Like I said, they are scary cheap, but they've been just fine for wear
and stress. I'm going to order some more soon.

Desser no longer carries the Cheng Shin 4.10/3.50-5 tires that I use on
my Rosenhaun wheels.

Shopping around I found some tires made by Nanco, same size, that have a
4-ply rating and are only $10.99 each. I don't need tubes but since they
were only $6 each I ordered them too. Nanco is known for their trailer
tires and have a good reputation.

UPS shipping was $13 something.

about things like this.

I highly recommend Desser retreads if they have them in your size.  I've
been running them for 1200+ hours since the first tire change on the
Tripacer back in 98 or 99 with not even a flat tire.  They have lots of
tread with what seems to be a fairly hard rubber and last well.  I've
run 500x5 and 600x6 so I'm not sure if they carry the retreads in
smaller sizes or not.   I think they are reasonably priced for
"airplane" parts.  For those of you with "certified" aircraft I'd check
them out for your next tire change.  I'm sure they have them in your size.

> "I highly recommend Desser retreads if they have them in your size."

I got my first set of tires from Desser in L.A. They were new Ching
Shins. Great tires, great price and were mailed expeditiously and for
free. Great experience with Desser.

When I went to order more (we're talking quite a few years ago now), they
no longer had the Cheng Shins so I ended up sourcing them somewhere else.
I'll certainly keep Desser in mind for my next set.

Regarding retreads, the company I worked for out of Swaziland used Bandag
retreads on the C-310's and C-402's. I've run over many a Mopane thorn,
termite mound, hidden rock, and even a native once in a while while
flying throughout Southern Africa. Never had a problem with those
Bandag's. They even did retreads on DC-3 tires. Retreads can be
excellent.

That's why I cc'd i...@wicksaircraft.com on that message, you might notice,
just like several other times I've posted similar comments. It's no secret.

I've met with Scott Wicks about it personally, and talked to him on the
phone about it 2-3 times over the last few years. He's assured me that
improvements were coming to both website and catalog (which is based on
their website, immediately rendering it difficult to use), but I've seen no
improvement since they hosed it all over several years ago. I don't even
think about buying from them anymore, unless I can't find it at AS&S, or
it's spruce that I'm after. Don't let me influence anybody though...that's
just my experience, and my opinion.

Folks:

This came to me unsolicited. I don't know the guy personally. He just
thinks I know a few "interested" parties. Following is some of what he has
to sell. He is in the San Fracisco bay area (Left Coast).

If anyone has a need or use for them, contact him direct.

I think he built two or three airplanes, belonged to a couple different EAA
Chapters and is now departing this hobby.

I have two sets of unused Matco (nee Rosenham) 4.00-5 wheels, calipers,
tires and tubes. The tires/tubes are Shin four-ply rated. No discs.
Depending how you figure, Aircraft Spruce asks something over $400. My
asking price is $125 plus shipping - maybe $30 depending on distance.

Abusing the brakes with a tail dragger can lead to propeller
rash. In my KR I've never needed brakes for directional control on
landing or takeoff and seldom ,if ever, touch my brakes until the
tail is firmly on the ground. If I were flying off grass I think I
could almost fly without brakes. My right brake has been a bit soft
for a couple of years not but I've never gone through the hassle of
servicing it. Pads are fine.

KR> Tires and waterproofing

2018-07-15 Thread Mike Sylvester via KRnet
Thanks for all the help on the kinds of tape guys. I am planning for Oshkosh
and since I copied Mark's N56ML by making all top pieces removable, there are a
lot of places for water to find it's way in. I just got back from Home Depot
with 2 fresh rolls of white electrical tape.

Tires, I had a flat on the taxiway of my home airport late one evening. I had
to call a friend to bring a dolly because when the tire goes down, the Kr is
stuck right there. My plan for Oshkosh is to carry a tire/rim assembly and the
tools to change it with. Flying solo the weight should be a non issue.

KR> Tires and tire pressure

2008-10-12 Thread Ronald Wright
The biggest problem I have seen is LOW TIRE PRESSURE..
Most of these small tires easily run 50 to 90 pounds
air pressure but most people only run them around
30-35..

Tires can and will spin on the rim at low pressures
during landings..

Another way to stop pinching the tube is during
mounting take a plastic bottle, like a milk bottle or
bleach bottle, and cut a strip about 2 inches wide
around the bottle. Place this inside the expanded
tube before installing it on the split rim.. This
will eliminate the possibility of pinching the tube
when pushing the wheel halves together.

Check the tire pressure regularly.. Keeping the
pressure up also makes the tire run cooler.

I guess I've been lucky.  Not a single flat (other than the tail wheel)
in 14 years and 670 flying hours and another 500 hours on the Tripacer.
I took off from Oshkosh last year with a flat tailwheel and made two
landings on the way home.  It really wasn't a big deal and didn't ruin
the tire or the wheel.
