Re: [lace] What would YOU do?

2011-02-12 Thread Malvary J Cole
Carol - what a shame that happened to you. I hope you can get the rest of
the 'mess' sorted out with no broken threads etc.

I had an incident, but with no malicious intent, when I was making lace at
an old heritage farm - 1850's houses with earth and straw floors. I had
temporarily put my pillow on my chair while I stretched and had turned away
to look at someone else's lace. There were no visitors in the farmhouse at
the time. While my back was turned, a little boy of about 6 came in and
walked over to look at my pillow. He put his hands on the front corners of
the pillow and leaned over. Of course, the pillow flipped over and landed
face down in the straw. The look on the kidlet's face was a picture of
horror and alarm, especially as his mum came in just at that moment.

I did Jacquie's trick of holding the pillow upside down while the bobbins
untangle themselves and then carefully tipped it flat again. Luckily there
were no broken bobbins or threads.

Boy - I should have proof this message before I sent it. I'll try again so
it makes sense!

I might try one of the products. For the rings, it doesn't matter if they
are
a little loose - weren't some of pewter rings loose and called 'jingles' or
similar. Some of the bobbins have a spiral and generally are too rough to
use as they are at the moment.

I've been pondering this for quite a while, so I can ponder a bit longer -

Re: [lace] How do you feel about "Restored Bobbins?

2011-01-20 Thread Malvary J Cole
I have rewired several bobbins where the wire has long since gone to
wire-heaven.

I'm sure (as Jacquie has also mentioned on several occasions) that the
spangles we see on old bobbins we buy today are probably not the spangles
that were on the bobbin when it was new. Some of those old spangles are
s big that I and probably others would not find them comfortable to use.
So, I take off the old beads and use them to respangle the bobbin and save
the excess to spangle old bobbins which have no beads.

A couple of years ago I bought several old bobbins which had originally had
pewter inserts, bands, plugs etc. I took them to a local pewter worker that
I know and after a very long discussion decided that there was no way that
new pewter could be added at an even remotely economical method. Now I have
to decide what to do - whatever it is will not be even remotely like it was
originally. I'd just like to do something with them so that they can be
used again.

One time I had a class of seniors at a local community centre. Starting off
with "put 2 over 3, put 2 over 1 and 4 over 3" one lady couldn't understand
that the bobbin then took on the number of the space it was in, not the
number it was when it started. Anyway, after several tries of explaining
and she still didn't understand I put 4 chairs in front and had 4 parcels on
the chairs and showed her two over 3 - she didn't have to remember which
parcel was which, she had to remember that the chairs were 2 and 3.

Finally, the penny dropped.

Later as I was going round the class, I heard a little mutter from her "put
chair 2 over chair 3."

When I'm using my roller pillow it is because I'm making a long length. In
my opinion it is better to have the pattern a little larger than the roller
so that as you go over and over the pattern the pin holes are not always in
the same place. If the roller is padded to make the pattern fit snuggly
round the roller then the pins are always going in to the same hole.
Possibly not a problem with a straw filled roller, but with a foam roller it
will break down if a long length is made.

I realise that the PBS station in Watertown, NY does carry a lot of UK

After having made a big boo-boo in laying out the completed pieces for the

so I asked him if he could turn me some smaller ones. In due course 6 pairs
arrived the bottom more like a Honiton bobbin - quite pointed, but not
drilled for spangles. He wrote that they had all been made out of one piece
of lignum vitae. The colour ranges from black to pale yellow, some are
multi-coloured. I started to drill holes using a little drill bit in a
pin-vice (I didn't have a drill that would hold the tiny bits in those
days). Boy, is that wood hard!! I later learned that it is supposedly one
of the few woods that is so heavy/dense that it won't float. I can attest
to its hardness.

I believe that Mr. Le Grande's wife was one of the founding members of a BC

range of pink/red colours.

I would say that I had a piece of filet lace which was very badly stained
and I left it in soak, changing the water every day for about 2-3 weeks.
Rubbed the stained bit with neat cleaner (i.e. Orvis or one of the liquid
soaps suitable for woollens and cold wash). However, I'm not sure that even
that much soaking will remove rust stains.

Re: [lace] We did it

2009-06-28 Thread Malvary J Cole
A quick check on google tells me that French Ivory is a plastic produced to
simulate ivory. It is made from celluloid plastic with some ground powdered
ivory mixed in. It was first produced by the Xylonite Company in 1866. It
is most commonly made into sets for the dressing table - very popular and it
is often found in second-hand and antique shops.

Unlike ivory, and if you can see the grain, the grain on French
Ivory/celluloid should show wavy parallel lines. The lines don't intersect
or cross-hatch as they would in ivory.

Re: [lace] We did it

2009-06-27 Thread Malvary J Cole

Sue - your other options are: Wood, bamboo, French Ivory.

When you remove the fabric that is on the sticks at the moment, do so very
carefully as it will give you a good template. Also, before you remove the
fabric spread the fan out and draw a good shape and take careful
measurements. It will make life easier when/if you decide to make the lace.

I have a lovely set of sticks which I bought at a flea market but there was
no fabric on them, so it is much harder to draw the shape as there is
nothing to hold the sticks in place to draw around - also it isn't the usual
half circle design it is more of a half oval shape.

Re: [lace] torchon lace query

2009-06-22 Thread Malvary J Cole
I am making an edging which I started at Lace Convention in Bristol (2005?)
(Lavender and Lace workshop). I was just turning the 4th corner when I
noticed that I had done Dieppe ground in the triangle next to the footside
rather than the Roseground that was in all the other triangles. I really
don't know why I didn't see it earlier.

However, it screamed at me, so I started to undo. I had taken out many of
the pins so had to put pins back before I could undo each element.

The lace pillow is at my boyfriend's apartment but I don't go there very
often, so it took me about 2 years to undo!! However, earlier this year I
finally got there and am now going forward again. I'm not saying that there
are no other errors in the lace, but I couldn't live with that one.

Eventually, I'll finish it and be able to let the teacher know that it is
finally done!

I was looking for the Arachne cover cloth and pin cushion that sister
Jacquie made for me. Could find it anywhere and was very upset, and then
realised that they were the ones in use on that pillow.

If the book has mould the following might work. We have a phone in show on
the radio. Last week's guest was an antique and furniture conservator.
Someone phoned in because he had a wooden chest which had been stored in the
basement and had got some mould inside. The conservator did not recommend
using bleach because of the long term damage that it does, but he did
recommend using vinegar. He said to put a dish of vinegar into the wooden
chest and shut the lid down. He said the mould spores are drawn to the
vinegar. Perhaps standing the book on end and fanning the pages a little
inside a container and putting a dish of vinegar inside the container might
work.

I have not tried this, but it is offered as a possible solution to the
problem.

Re: [lace] Moving Lace

2009-05-23 Thread Malvary J Cole
Lesley - if you can still work for a little further before you need to move,
I recommend using a 'felt bridge' i.e. 1 piece of felt about 2" wide with a
piece about 1.5" wide centred on it, with a piece about 1" wide centred on
that, and stitched together. Tuck the bridge under the pricking and work
until you are completely on the 1" wide piece (if you make the layers
different colours it helps you see). Then when you pull out the pins that
are only in the pillow you can lift the felt bridge and the pins stay fairly
firmly in the felt. You can then move the whole thing. (Measurements for
the felt are approximate and you can make it with more layers so that the
last 1" of pins are through even more layers.)

I agree about keeping all the bobbins in a bundle and also try to keep the
threads a little slack when you move the whole thing.

I have several Aluminum bobbins, but I have no idea who made them. I also
inherited a few of mum's aluminum bobbins (although I think hers would
probably be made of aluminium as they were English)!

I love them. I don't find them any different to work with except that they
hold lots of thread because the necks are longer than on most of my wood
bobbins. I have a couple which have the names of lakes in the Lake District
(NW England) and others commemorate marriages and/or births of members of
the royal family. They are straight with no other decoration than the
inscription.

When I was at the Lace Show in Birmingham last November there was a company
there selling aluminium bobbins, but although I loved the colours I did not
like the feel of them as they were too heavily decorated with grooves and
bumps.

I tend to look for plainer shaped bobbins (wire in grooves, pewter inlays
etc are ok if the bobbin is smooth) and prefer lovely colours in the wood
grain or other forms of decoration.

Sue - when my sister Jacquie came to teach Milanese for the first time here
in Canada, she told us that we needed two pillows and two sets of bobbins.
The first set was to practice the stitches that we were going to use on the
finished piece and the second set was for the actual pattern. We were
reminded that when we left the pillow for any length of time (i.e. lunch or
overnight), then we should practice a repeat or two before going back to the
actual pattern just so we could get back into the rhythm of the pattern.

It also meant that if, when we tried a pattern that we didn't like the
finished effect, that we wouldn't have to undo work on the 'special' piece.

Now that we know which part of the lace is a "slince", maybe that will

This is primarily for Avital - just a quick question for my own information,
but I thought others might also be interested

I heard a program yesterday talking about the rules of Kosher with respect
to fabric and it mentioned that linen and wool can not be mixed. One of the
reasons given was that the Essenes (at Qumran) dressed only in linen because
the invading Romans dressed in wool fabric. However, I'm sure the rules of
Kosher regarding this was probably much, much earlier than that, and that
the Essenes were actually just following the law. Also, during the Exodus
they would have probably worn wool - they probably wouldn't have been able

To get to my question - does the mixing of thread only apply to linen and
wool or does it apply to other threads? Would linen and cotton be ok
because they are both 'plant' origin OR would wool and silk be ok because
they are both 'animal' origin, but you couldn't mix cotton and silk any more
than you can mix linen and wool?

What came to mind was the piece of lace made by the lacemakers in Montreal
at IOLI. Sort of like maypole dancing.

It could work nicely in the Cirque setting. Tatting might be a little more
difficult, slipping that knot from one side to the other!

[lace] Urgent help needed to identify object

2008-11-14 Thread Malvary J Cole
Sorry to post to both boards, but sister Jacquie has asked me to post the
following pictures for some urgent help in identifying this object. She
urgently needs to find out what this is before the end of the weekend.

http://good-times.webshots.com/album/568383048jvtGIk

Here is the text of her message to me - she is away this weekend

"Just arrived at Dover and been shown this thing by Pat Read. What is
it, she wants to know, and was sure I would know. Well, I haven't a
clue but do know the way we might fond out. .

"It is NOT a bobbin display thingy (no slots for the necks). On the top
ring there are small holes on top, at the sides and grooves on the
back (see photos). The top comes off but I don't think it should.

"The base has holes on the top only. Size is about the same as a bobbin
display."

Thanks for all your help. I bet someone knows what it is.

Dover for the weekend.

Re: [lace] Really small thin bobbins. -now Travel pillow

2008-10-27 Thread Malvary J Cole
As Jacquie says, I have one of the little pillows. It is very comfortable
to use and when you could take such things on the plane, it fitted nicely
into the hand baggage and was easy to use even in the confined space of an
airline seat. I haven't travelled with it since 2001and miss having it on
hand when I'm away. I'm leary of putting it in a suitcase in case it got
broken. I have a long edging on mine that I take when I go to do
demonstrations (the only time I work on it) as it shows a different type of
pillow.

Jacquie - perhaps you should cut it off and include it on the quilt or
whatever it is you are going to make with all the little bits of lace of
mum's that you took or finish it off and put it round a wedding hanky, (in
joke - I also had a piece of lace on a pillow that mum had started and I
finished it, added it to a hanky and surprised Jacquie and her DH when I
turned up at her wedding (unannounced).

Re: [lace] Really small thin bobbins. Why?

2008-10-26 Thread Malvary J Cole
I have one very, very thin bone bobbin - it has obviously been well used and
is very worn. Perhaps they started off thinner because of the amount of
bone available to use - better to make a thin bobbin than no bobbin at all.
Mine is of average length, but I do have a couple of very short wood bobbins
also very worn but where the spangle has obviously worn through and broken
the end and a new hole has been drilled on the body of the bobbin. On one
it is very obvious that this has happened because the remains of the damage
is still there to see, but on another, I think that the damage has been
cleaned off and a new hole drilled.

2008-09-29 Thread Malvary J Cole
I looked at someone's webstore the other day (don't remember the name) and
was amazed to see bookmarks for sale for $10.00 and handmade scarfs with
what they say is expensive yarn also for either $10 (shorter) and $15
(longer). I'm sorry to say that I find that this undervalue's our work. It
must take a while to knit the scarves - ok they aren't very wide but they
are 40+ inches or 70+ inches long, and if the yarn is expensive that doesn't
leave much in their for the time spent. The same with the lace bookmarks.
Supplies virtually $0 but time and expertise $10 for the whole thing.

Sorry - this might spark some bad feelings somewhere - don't mean to upset
folks, but I feel that this doesn't represent the time and effort put into
these items, and is not a realistic price for hand-made items. Have you
tried getting a plumber to your house $45-$50 for them just to turn up
before they even start work or a mechanic to work on your car??

I find a good source of hankies is your local charity shop. There are

I made two hankies for the mum and mum in law for a wedding last year. I
based the edging on the pattern I had used for the garter. I used hankies
which had come from the sale at their church. They were patterned with some
drawn-thread type embroidery and looked very nice with the lace on them.

Re: [lace] Miss Warren

2008-09-14 Thread Malvary J Cole

The picture on the dust wrapper is also plate 47 facing page 245.

There are several Warren families in the 1901 census for Stoke Goldington.
Page 239 of the same book says that 1906 was marked by the establishment at
Stoke Goldington by Mr. Armstron of what is known as the "Bucks Cottage
Workers' Agency". (snip some other stuff but it goes on) Lace-makers who
had long previously given up their lace work, again brought out their
pillows, and being assured of immediate sales and remuneration, put their
energies once more into the delicate and artistic occupation of their youth.
The Agency moved to Olney in 1909.

Can't find any reference to Habberton Lulham. Some Lulham's with H as a
middle initial.

Re: [lace] Miss Warren

2008-09-14 Thread Malvary J Cole
Have now found the book. There is no indication of her age, however, I
would suspect that the Miss Warren was in the original edition which was
printed in 1909. There is a picture of a class but that is dated 1918 so
would not have been in the original.

Another signal that perhaps she was in the original 1909 edition is the
length of her skirt which appears to be long. I think she looks about 25 -
Rebecca would have been about 42 by 1909 (I know the photo didn't have to
have been exactly that date, but I would have thought that for someone of
that age it would have been a 'current' photo, rather than one which had
been taken years before). But we will probably never know!

There are several other young Warren girls that would fit the age nicely,
but who had no occupation shown on the census. Lacemaking would not
necessarily have been considered an occupation - what is on the census form
is what the person filling it in considered to be relevant. For example,
some put down the fact that the children were students, but few of the Stoke
Goldington returns include that information.

"Cherry Knobloch" asked: "The lace maker on the cover is identified as Miss
Warren, of Stoke Goldington. Does anyone know anything about this woman?"

A quick check at the 1901 census for the name Warren and Stoke Goldington
lists about 7 families with the name Warren.

3 ladies Elizabeth (55) married; daughter Rebecca (34) single; and Mary A
(84) widow are shown on the census as being Lacemakers. I don't know the
age of the photo nor how old the lady looks in the photo. Perhaps
guestimating the age in relation to when the book was first published might
give an idea of which of the Warren ladies it could possibly be.

The meaning I had heard was that the weasel was a hat - made out of weasel
rather than more expensive pelts, and to pop something is to pawn it.

So, when you think of the rhyme:

Up and down the city road (i.e. strutting around in your finery with your
posh hat on you head)

In and out of the Eagle (going into the pub for a drink or two)
That's the way the money goes (when you buy the drink or two)
Pop goes the weasel (you pawn the hat so you have more money)

But I like the other explanation too, especially if the spoked wheel came
around and 'popped' you on the head if you weren't paying attention

Re: [lace] roller or block

2008-07-27 Thread Malvary J Cole
Both Carol and Clay mentioned 'fitting' the pattern round the roller. May I
suggest that when using a roller that you have the pattern larger than the
roller.

If the pattern is fitted closely round the roller, then you are using the
same pinholes on every rotation of the roller. This is probably not too bit
a problem with straw or similar type fillings, but with the proliferation of
styrofoam type materials the pin holes will become very loose, very quickly.

By having the pattern larger than the roller you will be using a slightly
different place on the roller with each rotation, thereby extending the life
of the roller considerably.

Just another 2 cents worth.

The type of pillow really depends on what type of lace you make.

To help with your decision just remember that you can easily make lengths of
lace on a block pillow, but it is much harder to make motif's, squares or
shapes on a roller pillow.

If you will be making lots of lengths then a roller pillow can be a useful
addition to your collection, especially as you already have four flat

It is a problem with many books and you need to check out what is being
described as cloth stitch and whole stitch (or cs + twist or ws + twist).

When we first re-started the Canadian Lacemaker Gazette with the Ottawa Lace
Guild there was a lot of discussion on this topic and how we were going to
describe the various stitches. It was decided that half stitch (CT), cloth
stitch (CTC) and whole stitch (CTCT) would be the way that the stitches
would be described. I don't think the current board of the Gazette has
changed that, but I'm sure Bev will let us know when she logs on later.

The 3 grounds are (in my mind at least) Torchon ground (half stitch, pin,
half stitch); Dieppe ground (half stitch, pin, half stitch + twist); and
Brussels ground (whole stitch, pin, whole stitch i.e. ctct pin ctct)

I had a similar instance to that one day when I was demonstrating. One lady
asked if I ever sell my lace and I said no because people don't want to pay
what it is worth. She asked how much I'd charge for the piece I had on the
pillow. I knew how long it had taken me as I'd been keeping a note of time
spent. I said how much an hour would she pay $45? She said that was too
high, I replied not if you are a plumber or a car mechanic, but ok we could
go lower. She finally decided that $5/hour was plenty. The piece of lace
(about 25 inches) was going to cost her over $200. So she looked sadly at
it and said that it was too expensive even at $5/hour.

Hi Jeri and everyone
Thankyou for the link!
The detailed photos of the decorations on the fan are excellent - but not
much about the lace? Anyone have any ideas about it (maker, designer, is
it

silk?)

Re: [lace] Sad news -

2007-11-30 Thread Malvary J Cole

Indeed, how sad.

I was using her little book on Cantu earlier this week as I have a student
who has been working on a piece since last summer.

I remember taking a course with her at Ithaca and she made little boxes out
of paper/light card, one for each student.

Re: [lace] Breaking threads

2007-11-29 Thread Malvary J Cole
Sometimes it is a question of the thread being too dry. Depends on where it
has been stored. I remember my first Honiton course where someone's thread
kept breaking. She was asked to fetch her facecloth, wetted and wrung out
as dry as she could, then lay it over her work. She then went for a walk
around the garden. When she came back to continue working she had no more
broken threads.

Re: [lace] Postage costs - was Arachne pin badge

2007-11-29 Thread Malvary J Cole
Hi Jean and others - you can check out the rate that should have been
charged for sending the parcel. You would need to weigh the books and
estimate the weight of the packing but you would definitely get an idea of
how much you should have been charged. You also have to take into account
the size as it is also based on size as well as weight.

http://www.canadapost.ca/personal/offerings/lettermail/int/rates-e.asp

Interestingly, I made a baby blanket for my new great niece and took it to
the post office to mail. Needed to also buy a large bubble pack envelope to
pack it into which I did. Addressed the envelope, stuck down the flap, put
on the return address and handed it to the clerk to weigh. After various
computations of weight and size he told me that it was too big to send!!
Duh - it is in one of the Canada Post own brand envelope, so if you can't
send things that big why do you sell envelopes that size? Anyway, he folded
over one end of the envelope and put tape right across it. It cost me
$31.00, so $48 for 4 small books sounds a bit high (actually sounds a lot
high).

I hope it comes to Canada - probably will as we get a lot of BBC tv
programming.

Cranford was the book I had to study for my final English Lit exams before I
left school. I remember the story about the cow.

Re: [lace] Another eBay "thingy"

2007-11-10 Thread Malvary J Cole
When I looked at it the first thing that sprang to mind is the "do-hickey"
(don't know its correct name) that is used in synagogues to follow the words
of the Torah when you are reading. Avital or Miriam might know, but we
probably won't hear from them at the moment.

Probably isn't, but other than that I can't think of anything else. I think
it is very interesting.

Interesting too, that they have shown the back of the photo which says quite
