RE: [lace] Wedding Hankie poem

2017-07-15 Thread Noelene Lafferty
It's just a square of fabric
Edged with lace that's made by hand
For the happy bride to carry
When she gets her wedding band.

But when the day is over,
Wash and fold with care
It can become a pretty bonnet
For a new born babe to wear.

Just turn one edge over
And gather fold so neat
Some ribbons on two corners
And the bonnet is complete

[lace] Threads for Cluny de Brioude dentelle polychrome

2017-07-11 Thread Noelene Lafferty
The Bord de mer patterns in Cluny de Brioude dentelle polychrome book call
for Soie d'Alger. I assume this is the Au ver a Soie D'Alger in Threads
for lace, but if I try the Ganse princesse edge with an equivalent 22 wpc
thread, it looks far too thin. Has anyone tried this pattern and can

[lace] Mounting on silk fabric

2017-06-11 Thread Noelene Lafferty
A friend of mine is seeking advice on how to mount some lace she has made on
to some fine silk fabric. It was brought back from Japan for her, and the
giver says it is "vintage" silk offcut from a kimono. It is 13" wide by
39" long. The longer sides are woven and wont fray. She wishes to sew her
lace, which she has made to the measurement, onto the shorter sides.

Can anyone suggest the best method of sewing her lace on to this flimsy silk
fabric?

RE: [lace] Testing whether Italics will process on Arachne's Old Server

2017-06-07 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Your test here in Australia came through as with others, Jeri. Punctuation
but no italics, or bold, or underline.

I would welcome a change to another email exchange base, as messages from
some members of Arachne get truncated as soon as they use an unusual
character like an apostrophe, and I have to go to our archive to read the
whole message.

I run a small email chat group, just for Australian lacemakers, through
Google Groups which is free, has no ads, does not generate any spam, and
allows the inclusion of formatted text but I don't believe it would be
possible to mass transfer 1,000 plus new members on to it. And it does not
offer any support (being free), so there is no way I can enquire about this.

[lace] New Book Bedfordshire Lace Designs

2017-06-05 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Jeri, thanks for your advice that a new book by Jana Novak is available.

I don't think I've seen mention of the new book by Louise West, Bedfordshire
Lace Designs. I've just received my copy from the UK, and am delighted
with it.

To quote the forward, the designs in this book have been inspired by a range
of sources, some historical, others from plant life, and one from another
artist's paintings The book is not aimed at the complete beginner to
lacemaking, but at the lacemaker who has some knowledge of Bedfordshire who
wants to work new patterns.

The book starts with a simple bookmark with full working instructions, and
progresses through a total of 25 various lovely patterns of increasing
difficulty until the final patterns are just the pricking and a photo of the
worked lace.

[lace] French lace term Aponce

2017-06-03 Thread Noelene Lafferty
I thought I would share this with Arachne.

On page 14 of Cluny de Brioude by Fouriscot and Arpin (not the Cluny de
Brioude dentelle polychrome) is a phrase "Pour obtenir une belle aponce .."
and goes on to say don't make picots and substitute plaits for tallies. My
Google Translate app failed to translate the noun "aponce", and no amount of
research helped - it led me down the track of "ponce" being related to
sandpaper and smoothing things.

I asked a French speaking friend for help, and through her French lacemaking
friends, she finally came up with a meaning. It means a join, as in when
you join by overlapping your two pieces of lace and sewing them together. I
was given a quote written by Michel Jourde in an old edition of La Dentelle
describing this technique.

[lace] Translating lace books

2017-05-27 Thread Noelene Lafferty
I sent a message to Arachne yesterday, but it didn't show up on my computer,
so here it is again. My apologies if it is a duplicate.

I recently discovered the free Google Translate app for android smart phones
and tablets.

You set your languages (e.g. French to English), point the lens of your
phone or tablet at the printed text, press the camera button, and it
translates for you. It can't understand lace terms, of course, that's
asking too much, but it does at least enable you to get the gist of the
text.

And I was pleased to discover it worked with Japanese, so I can finally read
the text in my Japanese bobbin lace book!.

Someone gave me a bag of the beads they use to stuff dolls to use in a

use stainless steel). And is quite weighty, so it sits on my pillow without

This note is especially for lacemakers who may be alone this Christmas Day:

The January/February 2017 "Victoria" magazine shows a SweetMarveLace lace

A name search came up with this address:

"Victoria" is a lifestyle magazine for those with daydreams and money to

We exist to quickly present news of importance to the international lace
community. Why has no Arachne member written about this new lace museum
that opened less than a month ago?

I am half a continent away, there are lace experts closer to it, and I am
the first to find it while doing a search for something else? Or, in a
reversal of faulty mail reception, has someone written, but the news not
come to me?

Would someone or a lace group in the Detroit Area please physically visit
this museum, write a report to us, and find out if IOLI is writing about
this new member? IOLI is mentioned at the bottom of the new museum's
website:

_www.thelacemuseumllc.com/_ (http://www.thelacemuseumllc.com/)

This museum's name is close to the name of The Lace Museum in Sunnyvale
California.

About 20 years ago, Lace Fairy was developing as the first virtual lace
museum in the U.S., with my support.

The name Lori Howe wanted to use was Lace Museum. I suggested not trying
to compete with an existing museum, even if the management of that museum
was slow to present itself to people who owned computers. Now, we
Americans have a welcome mid-western lace facility, with very little in the
name to differentiate it.

[lace] Lacemakers' Hands

2016-05-04 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Yvette Slabbert in New Zealand has a wonderful blog size with some really
good articles about lacemaking: https://letslace.com/.

Her latest project is to document pictures of lacemakers' hands making lace
- see her blog site for more details.

So I wrote her a poem to go with the display:

Hands above the bobbins
Hands with bobbins held
Move with speed to place a pin
Move slow to tension thread

Old hands, young hands
Hands both dark and fair
Hands young and plump with gift of youth
Hands lined with time and care.

Some with rings or bracelets hung
And nails of polish bright
Others show the scars of time
In the lamp's exposing light

But underneath's the product fine
With twisted thread in place
A joy to work, a joy to see
The delight of making lace.

RE: [lace] Re: Lazy Loops

2016-04-11 Thread Noelene Lafferty
When I have a lot of magic threads at the beginning of a piece, I make them
quite long, and plait them together, in a couple of groups. I also knot the
raw ends together. I then pin all the ends together through the loops with
one safety pin. When I finally finish the piece, I undo each plait in turn
to use the threads to finish off. Keeps them tidy.

Rats! I wish there *were* a Lazy Loop - I'm lazy! With Magic Threads I find
I have to move the threads and their supporting pins at least once during

RE: [lace] need help with one-liner

2016-03-22 Thread Noelene Lafferty
I've gots lots of longer poems, Sharon, but this might be short enough for
you

Peacocks and Rainbows

Some people knit wool into blankets.
Some crochet with treble and chain.
Some people cut lovely new fabric
Just to sew it together again.

But me, I like to use bobbins
And weave patterns in thread without fear.
And if someone should say it's so useless
So are peacocks and rainbows, my dear.

I really need help with finding a new humorous one or two liner or maybe a
short poem concerning lace makers for an upcoming project I have in mind for
a friend who could really do with a lift. We all know the one about lace
makers do it on pillows. Is there anything different? Thanks. Sharon

Thanks for re-quoting Brenda's message, Clay. Brenda's emails are amongst

I would like to second Jeri on this. Sometimes members post to Arachne
using software that doesn't send in plain text, and I get messages cut short
- usually it is as soon as someone uses an apostrophe, then the rest of the

message is not there.

RE: [lace] Christmas Ornaments and Decorating for One

2015-12-25 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Jeri, thank you for your heartfelt Christmas message.

And our list has been quiet of late - a real shame, as the informative
exchanges that take place here were of enormous benefit to me when I first
started lace - what was it? - over 14 years ago.

And I'm sure Arachne has been of great help to many alone, or in isolated
places, in keeping contact with the lace world.

Facebook seems to have taken over of late, but that method of communication
leaves a lot to be desired for me.

Jeri, your Christmas tree, and in particular the lacis box sounds wonderful.

My Christmas present was a copy of Lace by Santina Levey, and I look forward
to many hours of enjoyment with it.

Seasons greetings to all, may 2016 be a year of lace related challenges and
triumphs.

For those lacemakers who are alone today, Merry Christmas:

Our lace community has become rather quiet, and so this moment to thank a
couple of our members.

Why I Like to Make Lace
By Noelene Lafferty

In today's busy world
Where life is one rush
And it seems to me speed is the norm -
When people can't stop
To hear a bird sing
Or thrill to a thundery storm -

In a quiet little nook
Just my own little space
I like to make time that's just mine -
With pillow and thread
And pattern all pricked
And bobbins all neatly in line.

There's something so good
To place thread over thread
And slowly see lines making sense
To cross and to twist
And to put up a pin
And forget all about feeling tense.

So when pressure is on
I retire from the world
Leaving troubles behind in my wake
To create something of beauty
So calming and quiet
And marvel at what I can make.

Also, does lacemaking fill an emotional need for you like it does for me?

one town in France. It is a point ground lace with delicate motifs
surrounded by a prominent gimp. The book's title is the name of the lace and
as far as I can remember it stats with Bal.!

RE: [lace] Undelivered Arachne Mail / Archives

2015-06-17 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Many thanks Amanda for the explanation of why certain messages go missing.
We have a similar problem with another chat group I belong to, and I will
pass this on to those who are affected.

My biggest problem with Arachne (I use Explorer, but nothing goes into Spam
and I don't miss any messages) is that many messages get truncated, it seems
to be as soon as the sender uses some form of punctuation other than a full
stop or comma. If the subject is interesting (like yours Alex recently on
Bucks picots!), I immediately go over to my internet where I have a direct
link to the Arachne archives as a bookmark on my top bar, and read the
message there.

As you say, these mailing lists are a tiny and shrinking part of the
internet, and it's not likely that this could ever be fixed, so I've had to
find my own way round the problem.

[lace] Updates

2015-06-13 Thread Noelene Lafferty
I concur, Alex, long may Arachne continue. Some days there are very few
messages, but when real information is available, or help needed, we're all
here ready to respond.

My latest "discovery" involves a large half stitch fan in a pattern in
Ulrike Voelker's "Master Torchon". It is supposed to be a French fan, with
the workers looping around a final passive pair, but this doesn't work well
for me, it's never a smooth inner curve. So for the final stitch at the
pivot point, I've used the "turning stitch" of CTTCT (the final twist
because it's half stitch), and pin back both pairs. Each time I get to the
inner pivot point, I use the same pin, just taking it out and replacing it.
It has worked beautifully, I now have a half stitch fan with a lovely smooth
inner curve.

2015-04-30 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Thanks for that line "Teaching is teaching" Alex, it prompted me to start
writing again.

Teaching Lacemaking.

Teaching is just teaching
Whatever subject might be sought
But if you become a teacher
By your pupils you'll be taught.

Take the task of teaching
Lacemaking from the start
You'll find yourself presented
With new ideas to take to heart.

"Why are there two twists there?
Why can't you work uphill?
Why don't my pairs remain the same?
Why is my fan a frill?"

So then you have to puzzle
Work out the reason why.
And not just do it without thought
'Cause it's pleasing to the eye.

And the pleasure gained in teaching
Passing on this noble art
Is worth the time and effort
And gladdens every heart.

[lace] Arachne 20th Anniversary Commemoratives

2015-03-24 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Just to let Arachne-ites know - we managed to form a small international
committee, and have approached a couple of suppliers in order to be able to
have commemorative bobbins (of different sorts) and tatting shuttles.
This process is now underway, and we will let you know when a decision is
made, and how to order. The plan is that everyone will order direct from
the supplier, and pay them direct.

To get an approximate idea of numbers required, would anyone who thinks they
might like a bobbin or more, and/or a shuttle, please email me direct at
noel...@lafferty.com.au and advise how many they think they might like.
This will definitely NOT be committing to an order, we just want an idea of
numbers involved. Please do not send your email to the list, send it to us

RE: [lace] Arachne Commemoratives

2015-03-15 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Such a good thought to plan this a year ahead, Jeri.

In my mind we need a single supplier who will
(1) supply both midlands, continentals and squares,
(2) also supply shuttles,
(3) someone who accepts credit cards or PayPal, and
(4) who would be willing to post out individual parcels world wide
themselves, with everyone ordering direct from that supplier.
(5) Those wanting commens would have to commit to an order say 4 or 5 months
in advance so that the supplier could know what quantity to make.

Postal charges are now so horrendous for international (and local) postage,
that anyone ordering would have to accept the cost involved, but this would
be a very special occasion. I would dearly love to have a bobbin (or two)
to celebrate 20 years of Arachne. I think I already have most other commems
issued.

I was the Australian agent for a batch of Arachne commems once; I also
organised a similar issue of commems locally recently, and I've learnt a lot
of lessons from both experiences. Sending a large parcel of bobbins in
bulk to another country often attracts import duty, which complicates things
no end. And means an awful lot of work for the organiser re-posting,
whereas a supplier is usually set up to post out world-wide.

I'm willing to act as an Australian rep in a discussion committee along
these lines. Anyone from other countries interested in forming a committee
to discuss this, please email me direct at the address below. I am retired,
am not in the best of health so don't travel much, and therefore have some
time to spare for this, as long as it doesn't interfere with my lacemaking
time!

All I received of Ruth's message just sent was a "b" in the body of the

this happens to might read it.I've never seen bobbins like this before,

who has used them.

Ruth's message read:
I am shamelessly copying this link from a Facebook site of which I am a

Have a look at the unusual bobbins in the first and especially the third

The first two photos on

RE: [lace] Cataloguing lace books

2015-03-01 Thread Noelene Lafferty
The capacity of the program is only limited to the size of your storage,
Jeri. And I've been using it for several years now, ever since I first got
a "smart phone". It's certainly not some "fly by night" program.

A reminder to anyone using the program - if you update your version of the
program, remember to backup your bookshelves to Archive first, then import
the bookshelves back into the program when the backup is up and running.

Your books can be synchronized between your smart phone and your tablet/s
via Goodreads (another free program). You can export to, and import from, a
CSV file ("comma separated values") which can in turn be imported into
several different types of programs.

You can have multiple "bookshelves", each containing the books of your
choice. Mine has never graduated to anything but lace books, but I really
must get down to creating bookshelves specifically for bobbin lace, tatting,
needlelace, etc.

And as Shirley has so joyfully discovered, yes you can make a record on an
entry to show who has borrowed that particular book! Good work, Shirley!

You can read more about it at http://tinyurl.com/b5lh98x.

A nice solution to a book collector's needs. Is there a maximum capacity?
I mean, did Evan Leybourn make an app for cataloguing thousands of books?
And, how many years will the app be operable for users? (Such things have
a way of losing support over the passage of time.)

[lace] Cataloguing lace books

2015-02-27 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Seeing some members of Arachne send messages on their smart phones/tablets
(many of which get cut off when I receive them after the first apostrophe,
so I have to go to the archives to read the full message), I thought IÂ’d
share a book cataloguing App I found on Play Store. All you do is start
the app, point the camera lens of your smart phone at the barcode, and hey
presto, the full details of the book including a cover picture is stored.
It’s a free app, just called “Book Catalogue” by Evan Leybourn, available
from the Google Play Store.  And if for some reason the cover picture isn’t
available in the data downloaded, you can take your own picture of the
cover.    If there’s no barcode, (like the UK Lace Guild booklets) you can
key in an ISBN number, or if there’s no number, key in the data yourself.  I
love it!

It works on my tablet as well, and the data is synchronised between my phone
and my two tablets. The only drawback is that the camera lens in my 7 inch
tablet does not recognise the barcodes, so I always use the phone to
actually enter the book into the catalogue.

As an avid collector of lace books, I've found this app a great way to have
a full catalogue of what I own.

Leftovers.

The lacework now is finished,
The piece is on display.
But now the bobbins in the box
Have thread too good to throw away.

It seems a crime to throw it out
Could it make another mat?
But no, I know I'd then run short
There's not enough for that.

So then I got to thinking
I guess I'm no spring chicken
My time to lace is precious now
So use it while I'm still kicking!

So thread gets stripped and thrown away
It gets chucked in the bin
And I can wind with conscience clear
And make lace with a grin.

[lace] Season's Greetings

2014-12-24 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Especially at Christmas,
Here's a greeting that brings
A whole lot of wishes
For life's nicest things-

May your lace give you pleasure
May your pins never bend
May the thread on your bobbins
Last right to the end.

May there always be prickings
And bobbins galore
And lacemaking friends
Coming in your front door.

And then through the New Year
May the same things hold true
So that each day is filled
With life's best things for you!

I wrote this several years ago now, and it's been a Christmas tradition of
mine to send it to Arachne each Christmas.

And a reminder that the Arachne Christmas Card exchange can be seen at

Merry Christmas, fellow lacemakers!

[lace] Retirement

2014-11-07 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Retirement.

They all promised me
when retirement was due,
I'd be doing so much with my lace.
I'd have oodles of time
To plan and create,
And have projects all over the place.

But then the day came,
And I planned to sit down
With all of that thread that I'd bought.
With pins and my pillows
And bobbins galore
And great piles of books just to sort.

But where does the time go?
I really can't say<
The days seem to disappear fast.
As the days now fly by
I seem to do LESS
Just where did I find time in the past!

RE: [lace] bobbin weight

2014-11-07 Thread Noelene Lafferty
The Torchon Tug

The Torchon Tug is an awesome force
To keep all those passives in line.
If they start in to waiver all over the place
Just give them a tug and they're fine.

A Point Ground Pull is a different affair.
The thread is so fragile and thin.
A Torchon Tug here would wreak havoc galore
And probably pop out a pin.

And Bedfordshire lace is a class on its own
With techniques to avoid any grief
Give a good Torchon Tug to tighten a trail
But watch out when making a leaf.

'Cause a leaf in this lace needs the greatest of care
In keeping the tension just right.
The first thousand leaves are the worst I am told
And I only make two in a night!

...Noelene
noel...@lafferty.com.au

Lyn
I think some tensioning is always necessary, regardless of bobbin weight
relative to thread size. I just do it differently. For fine thread laces it
is enough to just stroke the bobbins in a downward direction, like petting
them.
For thicker threads, especially thicker linens, actually tugging on each
pair relative to every other is necessary.

I used Google Translate to read the late Michael Jourde's blog site, and
spend many happy times browsing through the gallery there of wonderful

There is a catalogue available, and as Sue from France says, his children

family through the website (again, using Google Translate to compose my

sale, to which they replied yes, and that they do accept PayPal.

But as Sue says, I think they will time to organise.

RE: [lace] Noelene's Poems

2014-07-21 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Sorry, my books won't be available at the IOLI convention, freight to the US
would be prohibitive. I only updated the original booklet and had some
printed for the OIDFA congress in Adelaide this year, and sadly, they didn't
sell well, so I definitely don't want the additional expense of posting them
overseas.

The new booklet is some 20 sheets of A5 paper, printed both sides, with a
card back, clear plastic front and wire spiral bound. I'll make enquiries
at the Post Office next time I'm in town to see what they would cost to post
overseas, but that won't be until much later this week - we now live some 20
minutes drive out of the southern outskirts of Canberra on 9 hectares of
Australian bush, and fulfilling overseas people's ideas of Australian life
by having kangaroos and wallabies hopping wild in our front and back yard!

Noelene at The Angle
noel...@ozemail.com.au

I have received an email from a UK lacemaker who has kindly offered to buy
a copy of Noelene's Poems for me but we are wondering if it will be
available at the IOLI Convention this month in the US or whether I've got it
wrong and that it will be available at the OIDFA Convention in Australia,
also taking place this month? Noelene is Australian so maybe I've got it
wrong! However, I do seem to recall Holly Van Sciver being mentioned with
regard to having copies for sale. Can anyone else recall any US lace
vendors being mentioned?

[lace] Bedfordshire

2014-07-16 Thread Noelene Lafferty
I think I've found a printing error in Pamela Nottingham's "Bedfordshire
Lace Making". My edition is a hard cover, 1992.

On page 11 is a diagram of how to do a leaf. She says make a cloth stitch
and "Take the third thread to the right under and over the outside thread".
But in the diagram, this looks like the third thread to the left being taken
to the left. In other words, I think the diagram has been printed as a
mirror image.

I've looked in her book which covers all three types of lace, and in the
Beds section, the diagram is printed the other way round (correctly, IMHO).

Heather, have fun with your attempt at Beds. I cannot cope with light
continental bobbins, I'm working my foray into Beds with my spangled
Midlands. I do love the squared off bobbins too, but keep these aside for
doing tape laces (where the spangles on my Midlands would be a nuisance when
doing sewings).

Noelene at The Angle

I used to be in Cooma, but have recently moved to live with my son and DIL
on 9 hectares of Australian bush about 20 minutes south of Canberra.

I've written no new lace poetry recently, except for some little ones to go
with Alex Stillwell's lovely pamphlets on baby bonnets / wedding hankies.
But my book of poetry will be on sale at the weekend at the OIDFA conference
in Adelaide.

I'm another who just likes the making, and doesn't care much what happens to

RE: [lace] Stunned

2014-02-12 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Thank you for the explanation of the maker of the Honiton picture on eBay,
Jean.

I wish someone could give us information here in Cooma, Australia, about the
previous owner of some bobbins and shuttles we've recently acquired. They
were sent to our local tip as landfill when the rent on a storage unit
hadn't been paid for some time, but luckily our tip has a Recycle Shop and
the stuff was inspected (and rescued) before it was dumped. The consignment
included over 35 pair of Malcolm Fielding bobbins in Australian hardwoods
(never used, still with their labels and some with certificates), other
collections of bobbins all with the Australian wood inscribed on the body,
some threads, and two hand carved shuttles from a Tasmanian artist who
describes herself as a "Scrimshaw and carving artist, which had cost the
original owner a great deal of money, and which were hidden in a fabric
purse in a bag of thread! But no lacemaking pillows whatsoever. There was
an enormous quantity of other stuff - cartons and cartons of craft books
(including lace books from the 1980s and 1990s), knitting wool, wool and
silk ready for spinning, fabrics, and so on.

We assume the previous owner had passed away, and the executor of her estate
had no idea these things had value! All we can find out is that she was a
doctor, her name, and that she had lived in the small town of Tumut, but
no-one seems to know anything about her. The bobbins are now sold - we were
able to offer the Recycle Shop a lump sum for the whole box, then resell
them among our local group of lacemakers.

Bill Blake was an ex-miner who learnt to make Honiton lace with Elsie Luxton
after he retired. Back in the 1990s he was teaching Honiton lace in
Kirkcaldy, Scotland. Somewhere I have a photo of him at his lace pillow.
Sadly he is no longer with us and I wonder if whoever is selling his lace
realises how much work was involved.

There's no time for self pity or to fret about pain
There's too much to do that is pleasure.

There's books with ideas to astound

I am currently looking at reprinting my little book of lace poetry,
"Inspired by Lace" in A5 format, with a clear plastic front, stiff cardboard
back, and spiral bound in wire, not plastic. I've written quite a few new
poems since I had the original little booklet printed. I can have them
done in a relatively small batch of say 20 or 30, and the batch delivered
free here in Australia to any address I nominate. I'll do a trial run of
20 for myself first to make sure it works, and if I'm happy with them, then
I can have a batch printed and sent to Adelaide for the OIDFA conference
later this year (sadly, I can't go myself, although I'd love to).

If anyone on Arachne is going to the OIDFA conference in Adelaide and might
want a copy (cost will be under $A10 each), could they email me direct
please? That way I might get an idea of how many to send down.

RE: [lace] blue film and book inventory

2013-11-19 Thread Noelene Lafferty
I have been using an App for my android mobile phone called Book Catalogue
by Evan Leybourn for some time. It uses the camera in the phone to scan
the barcode, which then automatically searches the internet for that book,
and places all details of it, including a thumbnail of the cover and a brief
description, into the catalogue. Then, when I bought my android tablet, I
also placed the app on that and I synchronise the data between the two
appliances.

If the book has no barcode, its ISBN number can be keyed in manually.
Failing that, the entire details can be keyed in manually and a picture of
the cover taken and included.

Having it on my mobile phone means I can always check if I already have the
book if I see something for sale.
Oh yes, and the whole thing can be exported to or imported from a

RE: [lace] Name the Good Teachers, Please!

2013-10-21 Thread Noelene Lafferty
I'm self taught from a book - Rosemary Shepherd's "Introduction to Bobbin
Lacemaking" which is based on the correspondence lessons she wrote for the
Australian Lace Guild. When you live in a small country town in Australia,
there's no other option. The book is still available from Rosemary direct
at www.lacepressaustralia.com, and is now in its 4th reprint. It is
interesting to read the history of this book in an article on the site.

Thank you for your thoughts for our bushfire victims, Catherine. Rosemary
Shepherd lives in the area experiencing the worst of the present fires, but
is OK.

Cheap chopsticks make ideal bobbins for scarves, with the hair grip as
suggested by Liz, or just rubber bands tightly wound above and below the thread
to stop it from slipping. I've tried this - it works.

RE: [lace] New poem

2013-04-02 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Why oh why when I write an email in Plain Text, and make sure every
paragraph mark in my original has been changed into a manual line feed by
doing a global search and replace, does the Arachne email machinery take
some of the manual line feeds out? If you want to keep my poem, can you
edit it yourself so that each verse has four lines please. The breaks
should be obvious if you say it out loud.

I am looking at putting together a book of my poems plus a few pictures of
lace and their prickings ready for the OIDFA conference in Adelaide,
Australia, next year. If any kind Arachne member has a small, simple
pricking of a small motif or edging of their own design they would like to
include, I'd be grateful. I can't pay you (I don't plan on making any
profit from the book), but I would include an acknowledgement in the book
and send you a copy if it all eventuates. A big "if" right now, printing
costs can be high, but I'd really like to do it.

What's the copyright situation on taking something from an out-of-copyright
book from the Arizona website, redrawing it and making a bit, and using that
in the book? Please reply to me direct.

[lace] New poem

2013-04-02 Thread Noelene Lafferty
As usual, it's conversations on Arachne that have prompted a new poem.

Lacemaking is good for your health.

Lacemaking is such an adaptable skill
It can suit many levels and ages.
And with internet access to help show the way
Just tackle each problem in stages.

We can't all be experts at Flanders and Binche
And use thread of the daintiest weight
But with the right tools and the proper mindset
You can still do your lace and create.

There's a lady I taught once, some 80 years young
Paralysed in one arm with a stroke.
But with bobbins with spangles each secured by a pin
Her love of creating awoke.

If your fingers have joints which have stiffened with age
Try a bigger size bobbin and pin
And the exercise gained without physical strain
>From all views, is always a win.

Is your eyesight the worry? Perhaps a good light.
And a pair of some really good glasses
Even webcam and screen for a really big "look"
Get cracking before the time passes.

For the delight that is gained from creating some lace
Is the best tonic since time began.
Find some way to do it, don't ever say "can't"
And prove to the world that you can.

RE: [lace] Nothing on the pillow!

2013-03-27 Thread Noelene Lafferty
One of my old poems:

My Sanity

I've been out of sorts just lately
And feeling rather flat.
The weather's been appalling
It's even stopped the cat.

I had some jobs to finish
To get entries in a Show.
Ends to finish, hems to turn
It all just laid me low.

And then at last I realized
Just what seemed out of place.
I'm lace deprived - I'm starving!
I need my fix of lace!

All pillows stood there empty.
My bobbins had no thread.
There was no work in progress
To keep me out of bed!

So now the outlook's different
There's bobbins freshly wound
And prickings on the pillows
And challenges abound.

So my sanity is saved again
And for that I'm really glad.
Lace may be an addiction
But I'm still not going mad!

RE: [lace] Translating the Language of Lace

2013-03-18 Thread Noelene Lafferty
The International Lace Dictionary is certainly an asset to any lace library.
I bought mine from Barbara Fay in Germany by mail order:
http://www.barbara-fay.de/j/. I just checked and they still stock it.

Noelene in Cooma

As for books and the like, I urge anyone struggling with foreign language
lace books to try to find a copy of the International Lace Dictionary, last
published in Gent in 1998. Edith Spee is the first listed Author. Jeri
recommended it back in 2006 or so. It is not easy to find, but it is a
great resource.

RE: [lace] If you can still count your bobbins......

2013-03-16 Thread Noelene Lafferty
As I have received a couple of requests for "How Many Bobbins", here it is.
I hope this works with just line feeds in the right places.
I may not have posted it before, it's quite long for one of my poems.

"How Many Bobbins" by Noelene Lafferty

A friend asked me once

With a quizzical air
"Just how many bobbins are needed?
If you want to make lace
And not spend too much cash
And then they've all got to be beaded."

I took a deep breath
And collected my thoughts
Just how many bobbins' enough?
I thought of my bobbins
In boxes and rolls
Just trying to count would be tough.

"You need some to start with
To make bandage strips"
"Are bobbins that sharp" she did ask.
I ignored that remark
And started again
This would be quite a difficult task

"To start with you need
About 20 odd pair"
"You can't have an odd pair.." "Pipe down"
"But to move on to bookmarks
And simple lace edges.. "
And at this she started to frown.

"You mean you need lots more
But how many's enough?"
There must be a target to aim for.
Like Miss Channer's Mat
How many for that?"
I took another deep breath and said "More".

"To do Miss Channer's Mat
You need three hundred or more
That's pairs, and not for the faint hearted.
And then you need more
For the pillows galore
On which other projects are started."

My friend looked at me
With her quizzical air
"Just how many pillows are needed?
If you want to make lace
And not spend too much cash?"
"I've no answer to that!" I conceded.

I'll second that for doing a panel for our moderator Avital, Ilske . Good
idea.

And it would be wonderful to have a commemorative for our 20th birthday.
I've got all the commemorative bobbins, and the outstanding ones for me came
from Chris Parsons. He also supplies tatting shuttles made by Stuart
Johnson.

The panel would be my preference. And to answer David's question we should
give it to the lady who runs our list. And the person/s joining the panel
make a good picture which each of us could download.

RE: [lace] Bobbin lace accessory

2013-03-12 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Thanks for all the prompt replies, but the item I saw on the website is not
the wooden bridge to secure threads flat on the pillow. As I mentioned, it
is a 50 or 30cm long needle-like gadget, with an eye each end. It is the
two items above the wooden gadget on the langendorfkloeppel website.

The wooden gadget is also described on the site as a "Fadenbrucke" but it
seems to me this needle-like gadget is something different.

[lace] Bobbin lace accessory

2013-03-12 Thread Noelene Lafferty
On the langendorfkloeppel site, I have spotted a bobbin lace accessory
called a "Fadenbrucke" which my Google Translate can't cope with, and which
is described as "an indispensable help for the beginning of lace with open
threads".

It looks like a needle with an eye at both ends - there are two sizes, one
30cm and the other 50 cm long.

My German dictionary translates this as "thread bridge".

Has anyone ever used this?

RE: [lace] Brildor cotton 30/2 thread equivalence

2013-02-27 Thread Noelene Lafferty
I too looked up "Brildor" in Brenda's bible, without success, but by a
process of deduction, (on page 7 she quotes Nel 90/2 and Nel 100/2 as being
90% minimum to 100% maximum size, and Bockens Nel 90/2 is 29 WPC), I figured
Finca 40 (my favourite thread, and also 29 WPC) was the same.

Does anyone know when "Master" Torchon will be published?

Noelene in Cooma

nlaffe...@ozemail.com.au

I bought Ulrike Voelcker's new "Discover, Explore, Master Torchon"
book and she mentions using the Brildor 30/2 cotton thread. I haven't been
able to find an equivalence for it.
If any of you have used this thread and are familiar with the "wraps per
centimeter" concept, could you give me the number of wraps for it?
