[lace] There's never enough room!
Hi David A few years ago at a Congress in either Denmark or Germany we saw one of the suppliers working on a project which required some 4000 [continental] bobbins [not sure if my husband misunderstood the number when he asked how many - but there was an awful lot of them] - she managed them beautifully. Those not in use were slid into an implement shaped pretty much like a tuning fork [but with longer arms] the handle part was actually a long pin which was stuck into the pillow, holding the bobbins in a vertical stack. They were kept in order and pinned neatly like sentinals on her pillow and were kept out of the way while not in use. I have a number of similar holders [though not the version with the pin] which I use for my Suffolk bobbins, for Midlands bobbins I use slim metal knitting stitch holders which I can then stack on top of each other and secure with a long pin or two [ie a hat pin] to keep them out of the way. Nicky in Suffolk The thought came to me that there never seems to be enough room for all those bobbins - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Hi Not remotely lace related, but you are such a wonderful mine of information, that I thought I would ask if any of you have experience of using the computer programme by Photodex called ProShow Gold for producing photo slide shows. Would be interested in your views on it, understand that the latest version5 has made it more user friendly. Can't find it readily available here in the UK (unless you know otherwise) but was wondering how readily availbale it is in US shops (rather than online purchasing) and which ones, all being well I will be over in the US later on this year. Probably best to reply to me direct. many thanks Nicky in Suffolk ... Why would it be wonderful to move arachne to 'ning?' whatever that may be. Leave arachne alone it's just fine where it is thank you. If you want what ever 'ning' has to offer then set up an independent group on it and those who wish to use it can do so. And thank you Avital for stepping in when the discussion about teachers and teaching methods became somewhat personal, that is also quite unnecessary. Discuss teacing methods and what does and doesn't work by all means, it's good for those of us who teach to hear these comments and we can learn from them, but it isn't necessary to name and slag off people. Nicky in Suffolk Date: Mon, 31 Oct 2011 14:40:39 -0500 From: Lorelei Halley lhal...@bytemeusa.com Subject: [lace] facebook Bev There is actually a bobbin lace group on facebook, with pictures already uploaded. The problem is that somebody uploaded a bunch of Romanian needlepoint lace photos. In other words the group's administrator isn't trying to keep the membership on topic, and there hasn't been much activity. (I don't have anything against Romanian needlepoint lace, but if a group is called bobbinlace it doesn't belong there.) We recently had some discussion on needlelacetalk about how wonderful it would be to put up a general lacemaking site on ning -- the platform that needlelacetalk uses. It would be wonderful if arachne could just move there. The problem is that ning charges a fee. For a group as large as arachne that wouldn't be much of a problem, and could be handled by donations. It doesn't allow video conferencing, but you can put photos or diagrams directly into your comment box as you answer somebody's question. I went onto the website too, I have no French so it was initially a little daunting, then I noticed that I wasn't viewing the whole page so moved it around and found at the very top right four/five flags and clicked onto the UK one, and hey presto the pages were translated into English - no problem - the payment pages were in French only but it was all quite obvious as to what to do so all very straightforward - for a change. [lace] Lacemakers in art - Netscher/Vermeer
Have found this thread about Caspar Netscher and Johannes Vermeer most interesting, thank you to those who've posted snippets about the interpretation/meaning on them something which I find quite fascinating. But it has made me wonder if anyone knows where in the world, which gallery/museum or even private collection the paintings of lacemakers by artists such as Gabriel Metsu, Steven van Duyven, Pieter Jacobsz Codde, Thomas Woolner and Quirijn van Brekelenham might be? Nicolaes Maes has around 12 paintings of lacemakers credited to him I beleive, I know of 3 but not the others, and I understand J L Dyckmans painted one too, but I've not seen an image of this. I don't doubt there are others, but if anyone has any answers I'd be most interested to hear - either on or off 'lace'. happy lacemaking Nicky in Suffolk - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] spangles/spangling
Hi all Have been reading the spangles / spangling thread. My understanding has been that East Midlands bobbins began life unspangled and they tended to be slimmer and shorter in earlier years, then as thread gradually became thicker, (perhaps the change from s to z twist thread also played a part) that spangles gradually began to be attached to give a little more weight to the bobbins and the size of bobbins also began to get a little larger too. I have several examples of old bobbins with staples used to attach the spangle to the bobbin and also examples of the wire being wrapped around the tail end of the bobbin. The drilled hole was a progression from this. I also have examples of old bobbins being spangled with a bent pin (passed through the drilled hole) and forming a U-shaped loop and the spangle is then attached to this. These bobbins are part of two collections that have been passed on to me. The original owner of one collection had 14 lacemakers in her family tree. The other was a collector of bobbins and she also made a little lace (this collection has spent the past 20 years in an attic). I've just about completed cataloging the first collection, but I've not fully sorted through the second, I've only had it a couple of weeks. In both collections there are some very small / slim East Midlands bobbins when compared to those made by say the Blunt End Man, and other 19th C ones which are longer and generally that bit larger. Brian, happy to send you photos - but it will have to wait until I return home. Am interested in having a read of your article on spangles/spangling. Sue (Harvey) - would be interested to see a picture of your East Midland bobbins with bulbous ends/ Bucks thumpers. [lace] visit to Brugge
Have just returned from a few days in Brugge - hence my DH and I weren't at Wymondham Lace day on Saturday - we were over there to celebrate my youngest sons Graduation with an MA in European Economics from the College of Europe in Brugge (Nick Clegg also graduated from here). Needless to say we did get time for visiting various museums and the Kantcentrum, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed. The chocolate drinks and strawberry waffles were also rather yummy. On route home we stopped off at the new lace museum in Calais which, if you get a chance to visit, I would highly recommend. We spent 3 hours looking round and it really wasn't enough time. Part of the permanent exhibition was dedicated to handmade lace and there were some exquisite pieces on display and all beautifully displayed too. The machine lace section was fascinating too. Two things let the museum down - signposting to find the museum on Rue du Commerce / Quai du Commerce. Calais has an interesting one way system around the back roads and we only came across two signs for the museum, one of which directed us the wrong way down the road supposedly in the direction of the museum car park - which is on the opposite side of the canal to the musem, with access via a footbridge. However, there is another car coach park - right next to the museum, but it wasn't signposted! The museum shop as far as I was concerned was a great disappointment. Most of the postcards were views of Calais, a few lace related ones were formerly sold at the Museum of Beau Arts (I purchased them from there years ago), the rest was exhorbitant tat (ie frilly red knickers purses). There were quite a few books which were abysmally displayed, in fact it looked as if the shelving would collapse if you dared to touch them, and despite all my searching which included crawling along to look at books dumped on the floor, I couldn't find a basic book in any language about the museum and the permanent exhibition. However, I will be going back sometime for a better look around, preferably for a couple of days and hopefully the shop will have improved. The cafe food, we had sandwiches, (a baguette stuffed with salad, cheese and ham) was tasty, filling and reasonably priced, half was wrapped up for later consumption. Oh quick mention of an excellent book shop in Brugge, on a corner along Dijver close to the College of Europe and the Groeninge Museum - the owner is one of the new directors(?) involved with the work going on at Kantcentrum the lace books were in the basment, but a fabulous selection. Also roughly opposite the Groeninge Museum by the canal is a very very large map of Brugge in lace (not hand made of course). [lace] Travel Pillows
Hello I have two travel pillows, both of which I love working with. One made from a converted DIY electric drill case, great to work on but limited to narrow edgings or small motifs. It had become very worn down from use and need to be completely refurbished which I was able to do with the help of David Turner of Church Meadow Crafts who kindly provided and cut to shape the new blocks I needed. The other which allows me to work more flexibly I purchased from Axel Rina Zijp, of Kleinhout, the case contains an internal lift out tray which is basically a small block pillow of five moveable blocks - two square, one half square and two longer thinner blocks. It means I can work a wider variety of patterns and I love it, worth every Euro. Hoping to see some of you in Tonder Denmark for the forthcoming Lace Festival 4th-6th June, I will be there exhibiting Suffolk Lace, thank you also to all those who have sent messages of encouragment since the book was published last year, they've been greatly appreciated. [lace] Optoma Digital Projectors - warning
Hello all I appreciate that this is not lace related, but having been through a very traumatic few weeks and still immersed in trying to recover our money I would just like to warn anyone who is considering the purchase of, or who has, in recent months purchased an Optoma digital projector, to be very very wary. We purchased an Optoma digital projector a few weeks ago from a reputable merchant. Being new to this technology I encountered probems in getting the projector and my lap top to communicate, the upshot of this led to the projector being returned to the manufacturer, who subsequently informed me that they were impounding the projector because it was part of a consignment STOLEN earlier this year. I am not making any criticism regarding the actual projector itself, but posting this merely as a warning because I wouldn't want anyone else to find themselves in this situation. regards Nicky in Suffolk - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] lace room at the VA
Hi Devon I was at the VA just 4/5 few weeks ago for an appointment, and in our break at lunch time we went along to the lace room but it was closed. We asked about why and were told that because of its location within the museum, if they are short of staff for room watching (can't think of the correct term) this is one of the easiest and more convenient rooms to close, because it's not a through room (if I remember correctly). We were told that if we were wanting to specifically view the lace room to ring on the morning of a visit, before travelling to check that it would be open first. We commented that that could be rather difficult for those living further afield, we had had to leave home by 4.00am to get to the VA for our 10.00am appointment that day We got the distinct impression that lace is very much bottom of the pile so to speak. We didn't find any postcards of lace in the shop and only one book on the shelves. So if you do go ring them on the morning you plan to visit and check first. regards Nicky in Suffolk - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] digital projectors
Hi all This is lace related in a manner of speaking - I'm desperately trying to get my presentation prepared for a Lace Day in September when I launch my book on Suffolk Lace and it is becoming very stressful. Does anyone have experience of using a digital projector specifically in relation to digital slide presentation using power point? I've just purchased a projector and it is not going smoothly, but I won't go into the whole saga here. My problem is that the image on my PC screen is correctly in proportion ie the bulbous end of a bobbin (oval in shape) is just that but when projected the whole bobbin becomes rather squat and the bulbous end far more round than oval. Not very satisfactory. I have tried the different format options on the projector but they don't correct this. It was also suggested to me by the retailer that I change the screen resolution on my PC, I tried this the images on my PC were all out of proportion, it affected every programme and the image was still not projected in correct proportion. Can anyone offer any suggestions. Please e.mail me direct. many thanks Nicky in Suffolk - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Bookmarks
I use the same method as mentioned in other messages for inserting bookmarks (using a folded piece of thin card) but I usually cut the tassle short on the piece of lace itself. I then use a hole punch to make a hole at the base of the plastic sleeve and use the left over thread from the bobbins to make a simple tassle - lengths of thread folded in half, use a chunky crochet hook, put it through the punched hole then pull the folded end of the threads through same punched hole, pull the other half of the threads through this loop, pull up and trim it to whatever length pleases, this secures the bookmark in the sleeve. [lace-chat] Who needs daughters
Hi all This thread reminded me of a now infamous family story regarding 23 year old DD, then aged 10 or 11. I had gone along to the regular parents evening as usual, and seated on one of the chairs set out for waiting parents, I noticed that my daughters form teacher kept giving me the odd surreptitious look every now and again. My presence clearly seemed to be distracting her chat with the other parents who were scheduled before me. My turn came and I was chatting about Sarah's progress, but the teacher still seemed to be looking at me in a rather odd manner. Eventually, the teacher turned the discussion round to my occupation, so I proceeded to tell her that I was currently working for English Nature as a species protection warden for the summer - I was monitoring rare bird species such as bittern, marsh harrier, bearded tits and little terns etc on a nearby nature reserve. The look of relief on her face as she burst out laughing was an absolute picture. It transpired that my DD's class had been talking about the various occupations of their parents, when DD's turn came and she was asked What job does your mum do Sarah? Dear Sarah replied quite proudly, My mum's a NATURIST! Need I say more! PS Antje in Spain, I have tried to contact you but my message was returned, I think the e.address I have may be an old one. Can you make contact with me off line please. [lace] Replica bobbins from Copenhagen
Hello all I've recently acquired two replica bobbins and I'm wondering if anyone can supply any information about them at all. The tag attached to the first says Earthfind in Copenhagen age circa 1570. This replica bobbin is whittled from yew, it is a simple shaft with a small simple head at the top with a bulbous end that is more flat than round more like a shaped cylinder perhaps (does that make sense?) and measures 12.5cms/5ins. The tag on the second bobbin says Earthfind in Copenhagen age circa 1635. This replica bobbin is turned from cherry wood it has a simple head with a collar separating the neck from the shank, and a large bulbous end, it measures 11.5cms/4.5ins long. Would love to know more about the history/story of these two bobbins, and to know if anyone else has come across them. My searches have so far been unsuccessful. happy lacemaking to all Nicky in Suffolk - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[lace] bone /ivory bobbins
Hi all Interesting one this, a couple of years ago I was given a collection of old bobbins, I know a fair bit about their provenance. As I gradually began to unwrap all the different cover cloths (stashed in very old biscuit and sweet tins) and discover their contents, a couple of hundred wood bone bobbins! I came across one that looked most interesting because it looked quite different to the others. I at first thought it was bone, but it just didn't have any of the characteristics of old bone bobbins, none of the dark flecks and alongside the bone bobbins in the collection it looked quite different. I showed it to David Springett, last year I think, and he thought like me that it was most likely ivory, he couldn't be 100% certain, but he was around 95% area sure that it was. When he looked at cross section on the head it had what he described as the right appearance. I have not tried such things as the burn test etc etc. I've not seen another bobbin quite like it, though I do have a modern ivory bobbin, from a legitimate source that was also given to me, though it is not a material I feel comfortable with for obvious reasons. David and I wondered if it had perhaps been turned from another object that had been discarded (by its wealthy owner) because it had broken - it may have started life as say the handle of a hairbrush or hand mirror or a knife handle or some such object. Have to say I feel extremely lucky to have been given such a wonderful collection - along with the pillow, bobbin winder, some snippets of lace and old prickings, an assortment of other bits and pieces all that was really missing was the pillow horse! I even have a photo of the last lacemaker to really use them too, her neice never really got into it very much and wanted them to go to someone who would enjoy and use them, which I most certainly do. [lace] new museum in Calais
Hi spiders I discovered last year when stopping off in Calais that there was to be a new purpose built museum to be called Cite Internationale de la Dentelle et de la mode-Calais, dedicated to lace being built in the town. It is to chart the history of the lace makers of Calais, machine lace workers many of whom originally came from the Nottingham area. I was then told that it was due to open March of this year, so when my DH and I stopped off a couple of weeks ago I decided to check out progress. At the tourist info office I was told it was now due to open in November this year, and there was an exhibition about the project at the Musee des Beaux Arts. We went along to visit, it is just across the small park form the Tourist info office, and have a look. I was able to pick up an 8 page A3 size pamphlet in French and English which gives a lot of detail about the project. We then decided to try and find the actual site of this new museum, not too difficult. It will be a huge complex some 2,500m sq of exhibition space, alongside the quayside in what was once the machine lace making area of Calais. They are renovating the former Boulart factory and extending it. Some 500m sq will be available for temporary exhibitions. It also seems that there has been some liason between Calais and Nottingham and a group from Calais visited the exhibition The Lacemaker's Story at Charnwood Museum, Loughborough last year. From what we saw, I have to say I'm a little sceptical about whether it will open in November or not. They were still tiling the roof, and of course I couldn't see inside, but it seemed that there is a heck of a lot of work still to do. Anyway, whenever it does open, it will be a fabulous place to visit with all kinds of wonderful things going on. Next door, well just round the corner I discovered Noyon - Boutique Dentelle on rue de Vic, absolutely masses of machine lace of all colours and widths, and some lovely sheer ribbons and some quirky lace items, a bit of an aladdin's cave. Great fun. Nicky in Suffolk - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] thread wanted - can you help?
Hi all Can anyone help please. One of my students began a tablecloth several years ago, and having had a break from it the last couple of years she is now wanting to get back to working the last round. She has begun winding the bobbins and now realises that she is going to be short of thread, (having originally bought several reels and been told by the supplier that they would be enough to complete the project) and needless to say it is one that is now unavailable. Does anyone have a reel of FILATO PER TOMBOLO DI CANTU 30 in white that they no longer need, she is happy to purchase the thread and pay postage. If anyone can help please contact me off list. Many thanks Nickyin Suffolk, weather bright but very cold - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] Ipswich Lace
Hello Katrina Have just been catching up on the latest couple of digests and needless to say picked up on the Ipswich lace theme and then spotted that you are from Ipswich, Suffolk. Have you ever been along to a Suffolk Lacemakers Lace Day? There are several held fairly close to Ipswich, ie at Kesgrave in September and Martlesham in May. We've just had one at Wickham Market, hall was filled to capacity. There are currently around 160 members of SLM. I live to the north east of the county and am currently researching the Suffolk Lace industry - yes we did have one once. Sue H, so pleased to hear that your DIL and grandchildren are all ok, there have been some really nasty accidents just lately.
