Re: [lace] IOLI Bulletin Winter 2019 & Lace magazine news
I have recently signed up for an e-Membership of the Lace guild, and so far so good got the two Lace magazines for the year thus far. And if I get a membership number I will be even more happy. I've just checked the IOLI website and they too have an e-subscription/membership but no indication how one down loads the magazines. Can anyone tell me more about this. I have subscribed to electronic knitting and quilting magazines, they have been really great. I have the patterns accessible wherever I am, I can print out what I need and do not have to worry about physical storage or the vagarities of the postal system. [lace] IOLI Bulletin Winter 2019 & Lace magazine news
I have been remiss in announcing the arrival of the Winter 2019 IOLI Bulletin. I got it a couple weeks ago, accompanied by the annual handbook. Also, on FaceBook, I saw a post by the Lace Guild that the current digital Lace magazine is now available. Better yet, in July of this year, the digital-only Early Days magazine will be available to members for just an additional $5. I've been curious about that publication, thinking it might be a help in teaching kids and newcomers. As for the Bulletin contents: Detailed information about this year's Convention in Spokane Valley, Washington Articles by a couple convention teachers: Karen Thompson (Ipswich lace) and Mimi Dillman (tatting) Memorials for Judy Zeiss and Marion Jones Proficiency Program information Laurie Waters' second article about Learning Needlelace (I've added this to my list of future projects. She makes it seem doable.) Jennifer Kohn on 3D tatting Spangling bobbins by Lilly Douglass A summary of the recent Figural Lace exhibit at the Lace Museum in Sunnyvale, with photos, by Evelyn McMillan. November 3, 2018, 7:28 AM Yes, the e-version is now available online. Unfortunately 5 pages don't load fully. I've sent an e-mail to the Lace Guild asking if it can be fixed. I'm assuming this is a problem at their end, not mine, but I'm not really tech-savvy enough to know. Perhaps someone else who gets the e-version could take a look at pp. 28-33 and tell me if the bottom of the pages is missing for them too? [lace] Lace (magazine) - and use of magazines for research
When my Post Office burned to the ground on Feb. 21, 2017, the only mail I knew was lost were the end-of-January Lace magazine from England and a PieceWork magazine. Very rumpled sooty waterlogged copies were delivered to me. Certain magazines are so important to documentation of the present that my guest bedroom has 20th - 21st C. publications in bookcases and boxes that fill the room.  In this case, I went to a bookstore and replaced PieceWork, and then phoned The Lace Guild in England to order a replacement, plus calendars for the following year (gifts that are fun to give), and renewed membership. All in one call. So fun to speak with someone in the office.  The bonus for lace scholars who visit here is that they sleep in the library, surrounded by 4,000 + books that tell of the history of needlework in many nations since the beginning of researched time. It is a real celebration of the talents of unknown and known women. Guests probably have interesting dreams. At the least, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The librarian here has read all the books that are in English. Other languages are represented and shelved by nation instead of author name. Research goes much faster when you have her experience to draw on.   If you are a member of IOLI, there is a photo of my research library on page 33 in the Spring 2018 bulletin you just received. It is in the article by Jane Atkinson, of the U.K. What a surprise! Jane took pictures, but I did not know how she would use them. There are still many IOLI members who do not know about this library, because they are not subscribed to Arachne, so thanks for sharing, Jane.  NOTE: If you are receiving this in a round-about way because my AOL and Gmail and the Arachne server are not compatible and if you send me your Gmail address, I will add it to my bcc list, so you can receive posts directly from me. Please tell me a little about your lace connection when you write.  Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center  - In a message dated 4/26/2018 7:50:54 AM Eastern Standard Time, mous...@live.co.uk writes: Lace is due out at the end of April, Liz. It's also perhaps worth noting that what Jeri has cited simply as "(ISP)" is "gmail.com" in the case of the NELG addresses. Dear Jane Partridge, Thank you for this explanation. Nice to know, as The Lace Guild was not mentioned in the original correspondence, only the word Guild. There are other "Lace" publications that members of Guilds worldwide receive. Gmail is used by people in many nations; not exclusive to one country. Some on Arachne will agree (if you are careful as to with whom you are exchanging personal information) that it is best if an official position is given below a signature. In fact, the original old "guidelines" for new Arachne members asked for a signature and general location. As a matter of information, and not to tell anyone what to do: Eight official officers of the New England Lace Group (approximately 100 members) all have addresses formatted like the 2 that follow: _NELGPresident@(ISP_ (mailto:NELGPresident@(ISP) ) _NELGLibrarian@(ISP_ (mailto:NELGLibrarian@(ISP) )These e-mail addresses never change. They are reassigned after elections or upon being appointed to a position. Any of 8 officers may write to one (or all) members, and we know precisely in what capacity they are communicating. Re: [lace] Lace magazine
Hello Jeri, I am a member of the Executive Committee of the Lace Guild. If anybody wants to contact the Exec Committee then holl...@laceguild.org is the best way to do it as your question might be best answered by one of our paid staff, somebody on the Museum's Committee or a member of Exec. I hope that when I have been promoting the Guild it has been helpful to the person I replied to (for example when somebody was looking for second hand books). The reason I asked people to let me know when they got their copy of Lace was because I didn't think Arachneans wanted to get loads of messages from people says 'Yes mine arrived on ' and it is easier to just hit [Reply] to my post than remember to send an email to holl...@laceguild.org. My email address is the one I use most and therefore the one I look at most often, I am not in the process of collecting addresses, I have enough clutter in my life already ;-) Clare - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Jeri, Clare is a member of the current Executive Committee of The Lace Guild. She is also a member of Arachne in her personal capacity - so her return address will be a personal one (I don't think I have ever seen a committee member of any of the organisations join Arachne in an official capacity, since it started in 1995, but I may be wrong). I'm sure it would be lovely for the Guild to be able to afford time, money and expertise to set up official accounts for those working outside The Hollies, but the practicalities of ensuring there will always be someone with the knowledge to promptly change the forwarding addresses when the committee changes or someone resigns, or affording a professional to do that for them, make it one of those things that have been discussed and left at that (as you will be aware, I'm a former Hon Sec of The Lace Guild). Other matters take priority where charity finances are concerned. BTW, your email, amazingly, has come through direct on the reflected list - it seems some do, some don't - mostly I have to wait for the digest to see what you have written, Jeri! Re: [lace] Exchange update/Lace magazine
Thanks for the mention, Janice. Yes, I was awarded a Medal of Excellence for the Christening ensemble (dress, blanket and bonnet) which I had made. I am still waiting for it to be sent to me, along with the CD/DVD of the exhibits. When I enquired yesterday I was told by Michelle that the Guild has still not overcome the technical issues (which I assume is with the CD not the Medal production) and so I don't think Jane Partridge can be right about the stack of CDs being sent out. I was sad not to be able to be in England in the short time that the exhibit was up and looked forward to seeing the CD, but I have rather lost interest in the competition now that it has been shut for two months and the lace has been safely returned to me. I would also have liked to see some photos showing the exhibit as a whole, as well as all the entries. I've also not yet received Lace so haven't yet even seen the winners, and have no clue how many entries there were etc Back on August 4th, the Lace Guild invited winners to post their own photo on FaceBook, which I did, but it doesn't seem that anyone else did, so anyone wanting to see my entry can look at that date on https://www.facebook.com/thelaceguild I think the CD/DVD of entries replaced the booklet that used to be sold, but it seems a shame, now that it is so easy to put photos up on the internet, not to show the lace to a wider than those who went to the exhibit : ( Sue suebabbs...@gmail.com http://babbsandbaobabs.blogspot.com/ - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Exchange update/Lace magazine
I suspect that the reason why the photos are not put on the website is because the Guild usually produces a cd/dvd of them for sale, and free access to them via the website would defeat the object. Contact The Hollies (holl...@laceguild.org) if you would like to buy one, I'm fairly certain I saw Michelle with a stack she was sending out when I was there a week or so ago. [lace] Volunteering - Lace Guild UK index to Lace magazine
Thank you, Malvary! Your reply to Susan was just what I needed to read this morning. It illustrates dedication that is often missing on Arachne (though never from you), and which is often unappreciated. Now that Arachne readers know Malvary is one of the proofreaders of "Lace" and also does the indexing - AND makes lace for a Lace Guild publication: What can YOU do? Many of you have skills that Guilds need. The Guilds go begging for help all the time, and that means people are not volunteering. Without volunteers, Guilds in the recent past have been known to "shut down". They often need officers; I see the same people filling required positions (by government, for incorporated organizations) - moving from one official office to another, for YEARS. Recently, I read in "Lace" of several positions The Lace Guild needs to fill. Several memos have left my desk about the high quality of "Lace". Someone told me there are up to 4 (lace-expert) proofreaders who read each issue before it goes to press. Everything published about Lace (books, newsletters, press releases, etc.) should have such attention. I get goose bumps every time I read something that is incorrect from an "expert" who had no editor, because it may reflect negatively on Lace as a whole. Perhaps that is one of the reasons we are not taken seriously enough in the museum world - for funds to be allocated to Lace exhibitions? When a key person is sick, like the Editor of a Guild publication, leadership should have a backup plan in place (perhaps a previous person who held the position). This is where someone with expertise needs to be "on call", just like physicians have backups. It has to be overwhelming to be obligated to a deadline or important meeting, and not be able to participate due to personal incapacity. So many are not actively sharing on Arachne. This is a great place to get experience by writing (for example) that can then be used to benefit Lace Guilds. I'm begging again: Everyone has a story about Lace. Every one of us has received a lot of volunteer (free) help in connection with our Lace passion. Pleaselet us hear from you. You are the future of Lace Guilds, and this is a good place to practice sharing. Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center In a message dated 10/4/2016 11:58:13 A.M. [lace] Lace Magazine
My Lace Guild magazine arrived today but DH didn't tell me. I spotted the envelope after dinner and settled down for a read. Imagine my surprise when, on page 21 there is a photo of my needlelace effort for the Lace Street. I sent the photo I based the design on of my home along with a scan of the lace and Susan put a note in that it looks just like the real house. Then, on page 30 there is a design based on a Viking Stone from St. Martin's Church in Kirklevington which is the small village in Cleveland, UK that I moved from to the US. Imagine, there were lacemakers nearby and I knew nothing about them. I moved here in 1982 and didn't start making lace until 1993, Wow - 20 years ago!! Anyway, now that I know how to get my photos on Flickr, I have added one of the Lester piece after I cut the bobbins off. Looks like spaghetti lace. And, now that the house has appeared in the magazine, I added that one for you all to see in my gallery on Flickr. Thanks also again to Sue Babbs for the review of Lace8 which I have now got to work on my Macbook in VirtualBox. [lace] Lace magazine overseas packaging
Dear overseas Lace Guild members! As you know we had some issues with the mailings for the last membership year (now hopefully resolved) and we are pursuing this with the mailing house. I know this is a long shot, but if any of you still have the packaging from any of the last year's issues of Lace (April 2012 back to July 2011), would it be possible for you to scan it and send it to she...@laceguild.org If you can remember roughly when it arrived, that would be even better. The only person who I thought to ask to do this is Malvary when her April issue arrived, and it clearly shows no airmail markings but now there is some dispute as to whether they were all sent the same way (very probably as they mostly took a long time to arrive) or whether hers is an anomaly that was sent surface mail by mistake. Re: [lace] UK Lace magazine
The Lace Guild has taken the overseas postings back in-house as the late and even non-arrival of the magazines being sent from the mailing house, allegedly by airmail, was just not acceptable to us any longer. As used to be the case, the overseas magazines in future should be arriving at much the same time as the UK ones, which will still be sent by the mailing house. [lace] UK Lace magazine
I'm very happy that my copy of Lace #147 has arrived today. I was pleased to see that the tatted lace on the back cover was made by Europa Chang with whom I shared a hotel room in Caen at the OIDFA Congress. I was sorry that while at Caen that I didn't get to meet Ilske Diane Z and several other UK Arachneans. But I did finally meet one of my second cousins at the Mayor's reception. It was hard to read name tags I know that my name tag kept turning around so that it was always back to front. Maybe if flags were printed on the name-tag attendees wouldn't have to ask where people were from. I think that trying to read small print from a few feet away is hard for many of us who are short sighted. Now I have to write a report of my trip, soon before the memories fade. ;-) Ciao for now, Pene in Tartu, Estonia where we just had a hot Sunday (33C). - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Lace Magazine
HI Sue, We are at the hands of the postal service when it comes to our magazines. I am not sure how it works out side of the US. Here magazines are considered 3 class mail so it sits in a bin there is room on the planes. First class has priority. Once it gets to the destination it can go through customs and they sit there until customs clears them. I have mailed magazines to Brazil and it has taken 4 months to get there. I think I could of walked there faster. To mail a magazine first class for overseas is at least 3 times the cost of the subscription. I wish I could give you a good suggestion but I have none. Tracking a parcel going to a different country means you do the tracking on that country's postal website. I have had to explain the same thing to companies in the US when they say they won't ship to Canada, because they can't track it once it hits the border. Duh, I can, because I track it on the Canadian side, not the US sideWhen I ship something to the US that is trackable, I have to track it on the USPS website once it hits the border. Now that most mail services have websites, makes it a lot easier to track stuff. Hi Malvary and Arachnids, You are very welcome to it as we are about to grow gills. It is raining yet again. We had drought conditions and a hosepipe ban (which was only lifted on 1st July in my area) earlier this year, so I am sure your turn will come. Malvery, I begged the same thing last week as our fires are getting worse. Pretty soon the Rockies will have no trees or vegetation left!! The smoke has finally abated somewhat, but it has been very difficult for the people who live in the areas where the fires are the worst the firefighters have had a very difficult time. The worst part is that not only is nature causing The fires both here in Wyoming and Colorado, but people are causing them too!! In Fuernsey, Wyoming near the very famous Orwfon Trail site Signature Rock were the pioneers craned their names dates of passing through, the fire is supposed to have been started by humans!! Sue, Please accept the Guild's apologies for the long delay, and thank you for your patience. We suspect that the overseas magazines were sent out surface mail by the mailing house (which should not have happened), and they may not have been processed as quickly as we would have liked before posting - as you quite rightly say they should have been posted at the end of April. Certainly items can still be sent from the UK by surface mail, which tends to take around six to eight weeks. We discussed possible solutions to this problem at our Exec meeting last weekend and hopefully you will receive your magazines a lot faster from now on - the first issue of the new membership year is due out at the end of this month, and we are well aware that there may be some late renewals!. If any other overseas members of The Lace Guild have not received their April magazine (which had the renewal slip sent with it) yet, can they contact the Hollies, please? Hello Antje and everyone I have seen this magazine all about lace and I love it! It is beautifully printed, in colour. The stories and articles are varied and interesting, the quality of the patterns are impressive. I am ordering for myself very soon. For us in North America, the cost of a subscription is around $50.00, a bit more including the paypal fee. It is good value. Please take a look at my website www.vueltaycruz.es , where you will find the information on how to buy it or how to subscribe. Now it is a good moment to buy, as the first 3 magazines have already been published and I am sending them in one envelope, charging only one shipping. Hi all It is quiet on the list and herewith a bit of chat. The 'Lace' magazine arrived at the PO box last week, but I didn't know except for a claim card. Of course I knew right away after presenting the claim card and seeing the piece of mail. It had a bulky bit in it, and the people who sort thought the better of trying to force it into the narrow mailbox (I have had to pry mail that was rolled tightly, out of it, ever since the powers-that-be decided to install smaller boxes to fit in more addresses...how efficient is that...). Now what was this bulky bit all about? It was at one end of the envelope, as if something had been tucked in to the magazine. All it was, was a crimp in the fold below the staple, that must have happened when the envelope was stuffed. It was so rigid that the envelope was thumb-thick at that point, and it 'crackled' - (as thick paper does) must have been of interest to the people-who-sort! I popped the bent bit back into place and it was a 'whole magazine' again. That and a stat holiday for Remembrance Day caused a bit of a delay in the mailing to this end. Since then, enjoyable read and visuals ;) (that's my story and I'm sticking to it) -- Bev in Shirley BC, near Sooke on beautiful Vancouver Island, west coast of Canada - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Will people who are interested in discussion of privacy issues please take it to the chat list? I would be very grateful if we can continue to limit conversation on this list to lace issue. Thank you. Re: [lace] NORMAL lace magazine
Francis, Thank you for the great explanation of the reason for the Dutch only printing. I highly respect several of the contacts of the magazine and love the direction of issue I received. There are plenty of images of new work along with the articles. This is so necessary for our visual artform. Although I don't read Dutch, I can understand the gist of the articles from the images and the little I've picked up working through Dutch pattern books. Thanks again for your input, Laura Sandison Lace! in New Mexico, USA do not forget this the NORMAL magazine is listed in: UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL, SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATION about a Provisional list of non-governmental organizations and non-profit-making institutions one more not to thuis all i aslo would have oneted this in english but they get a lot of subventions grants from the Flemish governemetn and so it needed to be in dutch francis - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] re NORMAL lace magazine
From Sister Claire Will people who are interested in discussion of privacy issues please take it to the chat list? I would be very grateful if we can continue to limit conversation on this list to lace issue. Although I agree with the fact that the topic has segued from why people might have got the new(?) lace magazine to privacy issues, Francis has an excellent point that there is nothing *strange* about it as a magazine, it's just that it apparently arrived unexpectedly for most people. As shown by the subject matter of his post, that was his most important point. And many of the comments about privacy issues were about how they affect lace groups and teachers trying to get their name to a larger audience, which I think therefore makes it allowable. Re: [lace] Lace Magazine
That sounds like a delay between the mailing house sending out the magazines and the Royal Mail in the Poole area. Mine arrived n Medway last week. I know that my Kent Family History Society journal which is despatched from Kent usually arrives to UK members after the overseas members gat theirs because the overseas ones go airmail (the reason for the higher fees ) but the UK ones go by bulk mailing which is really third class. You lucky people! I think I must be the last person in Australia to get (or Not to get) my magazine. It has not turned up yet, and I know others both in Melbourne and Interstate have had theirs. I keep hoping, and looking out for the Postie...! Maybe tomorrow...! Hello I also got my copy of the Lace Guild magazine on Tuesday. In it is a memorial for Pat Payne by her daughter Jo. Pat was the lacemaker who started Norfolk Lacemakers here in Norwich England in the 1970`s. In my opinion is was a lovely thing for Jo to have done for her mum. On the headstone is Pats name and underneath it is lacemaker. A fitting tribute indeed.
