[lace-chat] Lace on stamps - my re-organised web pages.
I've just spent the last week re-organising my Lace Stamps webpage - so what do you think? Not all stamps are featured as yet as I wanted to make sure that the layout and links worked 1st. Would also be interested how you view my website - Desktop PC, tablet or phone? https://www.annmcclean.co.uk/LaceStamps/index.html N.B. this is NOT a selling post. [lace-chat] Selling my lace bobbins :(
After not making bobbin lace for over 15 years [due to osteo-arthritis] and 4 house moves later, I've started sorting through my 500+ lace bobbins that I collected over the years from various places - both home and overseas, with a view to giving other lacemakers the chance to enjoy them. I've begun listing them on eBid.co.uk, but it's going to be a long job ! Please email me for a direct link as I don't think I can post it here. Could someone also forward my post to Lace as I'm not on that list. [lace-chat] Charity fundraising on eBid.uk
I hope it's OK to post this - so please delete if you're not interested. I participate in the monthly charity auctions - Your Donation Counts - on uk.eBid.net and this month we're raising funds to help a local school to me here in Newtown, Powys, UK buy a Defibrillator to keep on the school premises. The approx. cost for one is around £800-£1000. Did you know that there is a rising incidence of heart attacks in children and the nearest A&E dept. for Newtown is over an hours drive away in Shrewsbury. We only have a MIU here that is based at the local Surgery and only open 9-5 M-F :( The YDC auctions run from 24-28th each month and there's usually 150-200 items listed from the UK, USA & Australia - and sometimes from other countries inbetween. Quite a few are up already although any bidding cannot start until 24th :) More information can be found here: http://www.annmcclean.co.uk/eBid/YDC130_Penygloddfa.html I hope some of you will join us for YDC130 and look forward to seeing you there. (Hope it is OK to post this) With retirement looming, the time has come to downsize my collection of lacemaking books acquired over the last 25+ years. [lace-chat] Used postage stamps
Hi Margery, I send my stamps to the PDSA & RSPB to help with their fund raising. Most of the major charities will accept used postage stamps as they can then sell them on to stamp dealers. [lace-chat] Ravel's Bolero @ Copenhagen Train Station
On May 2, 2011, the Copenhagen Philharmonic amazed commuters at the Copenhagen Central Train Station, as they created a kind of orchestral "flash mob" – performing Ravel's famed Bolero, with the musicians gradually assembling in place as the work progresses. The video – which shows not only the assembling orchestra, but also the delighted faces of the commuters – has generated overwhelming interest, and indeed has exceeded the orchestra’s expectations. http://www.classicalarchives.com/feature/dont_miss_this.html Regards, Ann McClean in Kerry, Mid-Wales, U.K. ~~~ CAWTHORN, SCOTT, PALMER & DeSILVA PALMER Family History Pages: http://www.annmcclean.co.uk/ CAWTHORN, SCOTT, RUSSELL, PALMER & SCALES Family photos on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/anniemcc/ ~~ -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. [lace-chat] Dress embroiderers were kept in the dark
Royal wedding: Dress embroiderers were kept in the dark It has emerged that the embroiderers who beautifully hand crafted Kate Middleton's dress did not know the designer's identity until shortly before the public announcement. Lace featured heavily in the dress, with it having a lace applique bodice and skirt, and veil. The lace work was carried out at the studios of the Royal School of Needlework (RSN), at Hampton Court Palace by embroiderers aged from 19 to in their 70s. They had to wash their hands every 30 minutes to keep the lace and threads pristine, and the needles were renewed every three hours, to keep them sharp and clean. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13249018 Regards, Ann McClean in Kerry, Mid-Wales, U.K. ~~~ Vintage lace + lace postcards: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lacelady2008 -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. [lace-chat] Wrapping presents with a Cat :)
For Christiane: Wrapping Presents with a Cat 1.. Clear large space on table for wrapping present. 2.. Go to closet and collect bag in which present is contained, and shut door. 3.. Open door and remove cat from closet. 4.. Go to cupboard and retrieve rolls of wrapping paper. 5.. Go back and remove cat from cupboard. 6.. Go to drawer, and collect transparent sticky tape, ribbons, scissors, labels, etc. . . 7.. Lay out presents and wrapping materials on table, to enable wrapping strategy to be formed. 8.. Go back to drawer to get string, remove cat that has been in the drawer since last visit and collect string. 9.. Remove present from bag. 10.. Remove cat from bag. 11.. Open box to check present, remove cat from box, replace present. 12.. Lay out paper to enable cutting to size. 13.. Try and smooth out paper, realize cat is underneath and remove cat. 14.. Cut the paper to size, keeping the cutting line straight. 15.. Throw away first sheet as cat chased the scissors, and tore the paper. 16.. Cut second sheet of paper to size - by putting cat in the bag the present came in. 7.. Place present on paper. 18.. Lift up edges of paper to seal in present. Wonder why edges don't reach. Realize cat is between present and paper. Remove cat. 19.. Place object on paper, to hold in place while tearing transparent sticky tape. 20.. Spend 20 minutes carefully trying to remove transparent sticky tape from cat with pair of nail scissors. 21.. Seal paper with sticky tape, making corners as neat as possible. 22.. Look for roll of ribbon. Chase cat down hall in order to retrieve ribbon. 23.. Try to wrap present with ribbon in a two-directional turn. 24.. Re-roll ribbon and remove paper, which is now torn due to cat's enthusiastic ribbon chase. 25.. Repeat steps 13-20 until you reach last sheet of paper. 26.. Decide to skip steps 13-17 in order to save time and reduce risk of losing last sheet of paper. Retrieve old cardboard box that is the right size for sheet of paper. 27.. Put present in box, and tie down with string. 28.. Remove string, open box and remove cat. 29.. Put all packing materials in bag with present and head for locked room. 30.. Once inside lockable room, lock door and start to relay out paper and materials. 31.. Remove cat from box, unlock door, put cat outside door, close and relock. 32.. Repeat previous step as often as is necessary (until you can hear cat from outside door) 33.. Lay out last sheet of paper. (This will be difficult in the small area of the toilet, but do your best) 34.. Discover cat has already torn paper. Unlock door go out and hunt through various cupboards, looking for sheet of last year's paper.Remember that you haven't got any left because cat helped with this last year as well. 35.. Return to lockable room, lock door, and sit on toilet and try to make torn sheet of paper look presentable. 36.. Seal box, wrap with paper and repair by very carefully sealing with sticky tape. Tie up with ribbon and decorate with bows to hide worst areas. 37.. Label. Sit back and admire your handiwork, congratulate yourself on completing a difficult job. 38.. Unlock door, and go to kitchen to make drink and feed cat. 39.. Spend 15 minutes looking for cat until coming to obvious conclusion. 40.. Unwrap present, untie box and remove cat. 41.. Go to store and buy a gift. Merry Christmas to one and all, and best wishes for 2010. [lace-chat] Re: 'Something' may have moved into the compost bin
The saga of what was in/under the compost bin has been resolved - a rat. After we'd emptied the bin and re-set it on concrete slabs, the 'visitor' came back and moved in under the slabs, and also managed to still get into the bin through a minute overhang. Badge (our Jack Russell) flushed it out this lunchtime after much digging .. I saw it's face It got away across next door's garden (Eric saw it) and into the next field. So the bin is now surrounded by rocks and bricks and big stones to try and stop the blighter digging in again. Needless to say, Badge is covered in mud, as am I, and she needs a bath! [lace-chat] eBay UK listings not showing on .com searches anymore
I know that there are quite a few of you who use eBay and buy from eBayUK listers - myself included. However, are you aware that in their wisdom, eBay are now excluding eBayUK listings from general eBay.com searches? BUT eBay.com items are being shown on UK searches! I didn't know this until last weekend when I happened on a thread in the UK eBay Forums - and it's hitting UK listers hard, very hard. I'm OK as it's not my main source of income - it pays for our holidays :), but even I have noticed the lack of overseas interest in my listings. It's the fact that eBay didn't publicise this change that has got people's backs up most - even major sellers had no idea why their sales had dropped by over 60%+ in less than 3 months, as not everyone reads the eBay Boards [I don't as a rule]. SO, from now on, when you do an eBay.com search, please tick "world wide" down on the left-hand side if you want to see what's available from UK-based [and other non-U.S.] listers :) OR log onto eBay.co.uk and search there instead :) If anyone wants the relevant Forum links, please email me privately, as it's not just the eBay Forums that are running "discussions" about this. [lace-chat] Prawn allergy - followup
My thanks to everyone who emailed regarding my nasty reaction to eating prawns last week. Spoke to the emergency doctor and as I hadn't suffered any breathing problems or skin rashes, he thought it was more of an intolerance than an allergy - and to steer clear of shellfish in future - and I love prawns! With hindsight, I've had reactions before over the past 2 years, but nothing as severe as last week. I now have a prescription for antihistamine which I now have to carry with me at all times - but they send me to sleep! BUT am seeing my own doctor in the New Year and see what she says. [lace-chat] Reactions to eating prawns?
I've eaten prawns twice this last week and appear to be having a reaction within hours of extreme pain in my shoulder joints and discomfort down my arms for quite a few hours afterwards. Does this happen to anyone else? The 1st attack was after a Prawn Curry [frozen prawns & jar sauce]; I woke at about 2.30 a.m. with excruciating pain in both shoulders and aches and tingles down both arms and puffy hands. Couldn't get comfortable so sat up for about an hour until it began to ease slightly then managed to doze for a while. Once up and about, took pain killers. The 2nd time was yesterday afternoon at a friends house where we had a light lunch of crusty bread and cheese + cold prawns with a dip. I had a reaction almost at once and once home, spent the rest of the evening with a hot water bottle stuck to my shoulder. Today - I'm fine :) I do have arthritis, and it has been very damp this past week, but I don't think it's that. Am I right in thinking that it's the prawns that are at fault. The staff at my local Post Office in Newtown are dreading this - the queues are bad enough on Benefit days and at the end/beginning of the month when road tax is being re-newed, but this will lead to even more frayed tempers, etc. etc. I have the details, but haven't yet worked out how it will affect my eBay trading. [lace-chat] Probs downloading pictures from camera - Solved
Thanks to "Tech Support Guy Forums" & http://gladiator-antivirus.com/forum/ problem solved - I had recently downloaded "RealPlayer" to use with listening to BBC Radio online - and it knocked out the Scanner & Camera Wizard. I simply removed the program with Control Panel\Add or Remove Programs and the Camera Wizard's autoplay feature started to work again. For playing music, I now use Winamp which works fine and without interferring with the autoplay feature. Hope this helps anyone else who has had the same problem. - Original Message - Subject: Probs downloading pictures from camera Having problems downloading pictures from my Nikon 4300 camera since a major XP update last week. [lace-chat] Be Careful Out there - Visa/mastercard scam
>From a posting on another Forum - it comes from the genuine Halifax Visa Team This is a customer's story: A friend was called on the telephone this week from 'VISA' and I was called on Thursday from 'Mastercard'. It worked like this: Person calling says, 'this is Carl Patterson (any name) and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My Badgenumber is 12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Company a device/any expensive item, for £497.99 from a marketing company based in (any town)? When you say 'No'. The caller continues with, 'Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from £297 To £497, just under the £500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (they give you your address), is that correct?' You say, 'Yes'. The caller continues . . 'I will be starting a fraud investigation. If you have any questions you should call the 0800 number listed on your card and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this "control Number. They then give you a 6-digit number. 'Do you need me to read it again?' The Caller then says he 'needs to verify you are in possession of your card' and this is where the scam takes place as, up until now, they have asked for nothing. They then ask you to turn over the card. There are 16 numbers followed by 3 which are the security numbers that are there to verify that you hold the card. Those 3 numbers are the ones they are after because they can be used to make purchases over the internet. 'That is correct' they say 'just needed to check that the card wasn't stolen and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions? - don't hesitate to call us back if you do.' You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the Card number, but after we were called on Wednesday we telephones back within 20 minutes and are glad we did! The REAL VISA security department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of 497.99 had been put on our card. Long story made short. We made a real fraud report and closed the VISA card and they are reissuing us a new number. What the scam wants is the 3-digit number-By the time you get your statement, you think the credit is coming and then it's actually harder to file a fraud report. THE REAL VISA/MASTERCARD DEPARTMENT REINFORCED THE POINT THAT THEY WILL NEVER ASK FOR ANYTHING ABOUT THE CARD SINCE THEY ALREADY KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. What makes this even more remarkable is that on Thursday I got a call from 'Jason Richardson of MasterCard' with a word for word repeat of the VISA Scam. This time I didn't let him finish. I hung up. We filed a police report (as instructed by VISA), and they said they are taking several of these reports daily and to tell friends, relatives and co-workers so please pass this on to your friends Regards, Ann McClean in Llanmerewig, Mid-Wales, U.K. [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~~~ Keep the faith. The compnay I work for would kill you for this !!! You wouldn't believe the number of calls I take at work asking why they have to use a 0870 number, particulalrly for enquiries about delayed/damaged orders! I never use the IVR menu whenever I call my bank, or whatever, as I can't be doing with all that nonsense either. Although the cost is fixed for all 0870 numbers (unlike 0900 ones) of about 7.5 pence per minute, the company still gets a cut, and the longer they can keep you going through menus, the more money they get from the call. To cut the cost to you, you could try 'pretending' not to have a star button on your phone. Apparently this gets you through to a human quicker than the menus, although I haven't tried it. Alternatively, here's a web site which gives alternative telephone numbers for companies (sometimes 0800 ones which are free, otherwise geographical ones which can be a lot cheaper than the 0870 one). The article that contained the web site URL says that these numbers are reserved for sales channels, but that they end up at the same call centre as the 0870 ones. http://www.saynoto0870.com To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

May I just thank everyone who got back to me about the lovely blue flower we saw whilst on holiday in Southern France - it was "Morning Glory". I gather it's a cousin of the Bindweed and just as rampant in the right conditions :( Regards to you all, Ann McClean in Llanmerewig, Mid-Wales, U.K. [EMAIL PROTECTED] CAWTHORN, SCOTT & DeSilva PALMER Family History Pages: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cawthorn/ "BookCrossing" - find a book, take it and read it, and then leave it somewhere for someone else to find and read. http://www.bookcrossing.com/ - Original Message - From: Ann McClean To: Lace-chat Sent: Tuesday, September 28, 2004 10:38 AM Subject: Mediteranean flowers DH & I have just returned from a week's holiday in Southern France. We stayed in Laroque des Alberes, a village at the foot of the Chaine des Alberes mountain range which in turn is the eastern end of the Pyrenees. Everywhere we went we saw a particular climbing flower - which I cannot find the name of! The flower was a trumpet shape, about the size of bindweed, and an intense Mediteranean blue in colour. The leaves were trefoil shaped, about the size of sycamore. And it was the one subject I didn't take a picture of :( At first I thought it was a clematis, but the flower construction and the leaves don't match - hence my request. Can anyone help? [lace-chat] Re:Mediterranean Flowers/ Morning Glory
Many thanks, Pauline. I believe it is a vine type of Morning Glory. Did a Google image search after receiving your e-mail and found a website http://www.exoticplants.org.uk/index.html devoted to Morning Glories and there was a picture of the intense blue flower with the trefoil leaf. I didn't realise that Morning Glory & Bindweed are the same family, or that it could be a vine as well. Have e-mailed for more information as wouldn't mind getting one if it's suitable for the U.K. climate :) Regards, Ann McClean in Llanmerewig, Mid-Wales, U.K. [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~~ "My Collection of Lace on Stamps of the World" http://www.ann-mcclean.mid-wales.net ~~~ - Original Message - From: Pauline To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, September 28, 2004 11:09 AM Subject: Morning Glory Hi Ann, Could it be the intense blue of Morning Glory, which is the same family as the white wild columbine. March 26th, 1833 YARMOUTH The lace shop in King-street, occupied by Mr. BROWN, took fire on Friday, and some mischief was occasioned. The shop is warmed by an iron stove, from which the smoke ascends through a flue of sheet-iron, and the heat ignited some wood work adjacent, which gave rise to the disaster. RE: [lace-chat] XP, computers and firewalls
Don't rely on XP's own firewall - it's just not strong enough. I run XP, with Norton Anti-Virus + Zone Alarm for firewall protection For a free download goto: http://www.zonelabs.com/ ZoneAlarm usually comes top in any survey run by the UK computer magazines. I also use SpyBot Search & Destroy - freeware from http://security.kolla.de to root out unwanted cookies and other spyware. Another useful utlity is "Pop-Up Stopper" which stops those annoying pop-up ads - again a free download from http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html I'm no expert, but I managed to download and set these programs up by myself without reference to my DH!
