Re: [lace-chat] Posts and summer
Hi Alice Norfolk Lacemakers have a very large library but we cannot store them where we meet but are lucky enough to have two very good librarians who supply a list of all our books. If we want a book we simply ring or email them and they bring it to the next meeting. They used to bring four boxes of selected books to look at but as we are all not as young and able as we were it's far too much carrying about. Re: [lace-chat] USA places to visit help
The high desert between Santa Fe and Taos is beautiful, even in winter, especially if you take the scenic drive. You will need a 4 wheel drive to be sure of the roads round Taos in January. I personally prefer Taos to Santa Fe. https://santafe.org/Visiting_Santa_Fe/ https://taos.org/ We have stayed in the Inn of the Turquoise Bear in Santa Fe on our way to Taos. The Inn has great history, delicious food and very entertaining innkeepers (assuming it hasn’t changed hands since we were there). https://www.turquoisebear.com/scenic-drive-from-santa-fe-to-taos.html David - you will love Chimayo. A great place for pilgrimages for healing, and a tiny church. Also great spices available in the little outdoor market across the street. There's also a fiber arts trails in New Mexico: http://www.nmfiberarts.org/ I've have taken great weaving classes at https://www.weavingsouthwest.com/ Though remember that if there is heavy snow some of the roads my be impassible. We've still to get here: https://christdesert.org/ We have often stayed in Albuquerque on our way back to ensure we could get there in time for morning flight's and can recommend http://www.chocolateturtlebb.com Sue suebabbs...@gmail.com To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat y...@address.here. [lace-chat] Great Lacemakers
Hi All It is with sadness that I am writing to say that another Great Lacemaker has gone to join her thousands of friends in that great Lacemakers Forum in the sky. Sheila Brown from Essex passed away on Friday morning. I got a call from her daughter a short while ago and volunteered to let people on Arachne know. I know that many of you met her on here as well as in person, and will no doubt share your rememberances of her. I can remember doing the proverbial 'open mouth, insert both feet' I was a new lacemaker at the time (some 10 or so years ago), and was put in touch with Sheila via email regarding some lacemaking equipment and books she was selling for another lacemaker that had 'joined the Great Forum'. During the course of the email conversation I suggested she try lacemaking... sent the email and went to look up some of the books on SMP Lace site. The first thing to come up were... books written by Sheila! I then found her phone number and called! Her reply? 'Oh well, Sheila Brown is a common name isn't it?' A week or so later Agnes & I drove to Essex and had lunch with Sheila and Alan, and returned home with a boot full of lace equipment, books, beads and bobbins! It was the start of a great friendship. We have driven to Walsall, and a number of other places to meet up, look at lace and chat! I was also privileged to be able to attend Alan's funeral, which although it was a sad occasion, gave a number of us the opportunity of sitting and discussing 'all things lace' at the do afterwards! The last time I saw her was a couple of years ago in Solihull at the Christmas Fair. She crept up behind me and made me jump!! Much to her delight of course! I've done Christmas Exchanges with her, and am probably among the last people to receive something from this wonderful and 'missed already' lady, having got her name among the Christmas Exchange in 2016. If anyone wishes to send their condolences I do have her daughters address, and will pass it on privately if you email off list. If you wish to send by email, please email me privately, and I'lll print them out and pass them onto the family on your behalf. [lace-chat] Beware of Gmail phishing scam
Iâve just been alerted to a new scam being played on gmail users: http://www.chicagotribune.com/bluesky/originals/ct-gmail-phishing-attack-uiuc -bsi-20170119-story.html The brief details are: Gmail users receive an email that may appear to come from someone they know, including what looks like an attachment. When users click on that attachment, a new tab opens up and users are prompted to sign into what looks like Gmail. But that copycat site is actually a site attackers use to collect login information, and once users log in, their Gmail account is compromised. and to avoid getting caught: users should be careful to spot a green lock icon in their browser address bar â if using Google Chrome â and make sure the URL begins with âhttps://â. The copycat Gmail login site begins with ââdata:text/htmlâ and should not be trusted. I have just realised that I haven't seen any of your messages since February - and certainly none asking if the messages were being received. I was very happily and diligently downloading your patterns every time I saw a message about them, and have them all saved up till 2016 week 7. Dear Vivienne, I know that, and make tea in that way myself at home. But for groups of 60 who want to drink at the same time, organizing 10 teapots to go off at the same time, and then refills, is a bit of a tall order. And, must admit, I pour the tea from the pot into a mug from time to time. Lyn from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA "My email sends out an automatic message. Arachne members, please ignore it. Leave to stand depending on how strong you like your tea. Heaven. Unfortunately many of the young in Britain are making tea in mugs and cups. Awful. Re: [lace-chat] Tea for a crowd?
As in everything there are different preferences in making tea!! I'm not at all sure what a tea concentrate is. Loose tea or tea bags - your choice. Jane Austen would not have used tea bags! Don't forget a tea strainer if you use loose tea. Vital to warm the pot before adding the tea leaves, so it is already hot before you add the BOILING water. Leave to steep, before pouring - again a matter of preference as to how strong you want it And, of course, served with milk not lemon! Some believe in adding the milk to the tea cup first; and others add it after the tea has been poured in. [lace-chat] Fw: Today from Sapiens
This arrived from one of my American friends so I though you might enjoy it. Whether true or not it was still quite amusing and shows how easy it would be if you learned languages, to send messages without others understanding what you are saying... Sue T, Dorset UK http://www.snopes.com/humor/jokes/moonshot.asp G'day all, thought you might enjoy a story I read today in the book the book called "Sapiens" which I'm currently reading. It tells of the days early in 1970 when Buz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were doing their intensive training in outback USA prior to their moon mission. Towards the end of one very tedious day the were met by a very old native American from the area who asked what they were doing there. When they told him he smiled and asked whether they'd mind doing him a very special favour. They said they'd do their best. Apparently his people held the Moon Spirits in very high esteem and he wanted them to learn by a heart a message in his language to take to them on the moon. He made them repeat it and repeat it until they had it just right, but he wouldn't tell them what it meant as it was all such sacred business. When they got back to base they searched around and found a younger man who spoke the language and asked him what it meant. After they rattled it off to him, he burst into laughter and told them it meant: "Don't believe a word they tell you. They've only come here to steal your lands!" I've no idea whether its true, but this author has no reason to lie. To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat y...@address.here. Re: [lace-chat] Pennsic Wars
There are many re enactment groups in this country. Many different times in history and includes American, Roman, Tudor and any other time you can think of.It amazes me how much time and effort goes into researching to get things right and so many times crafts come in as well. We had someone come and demonstrate how a forge worked and allowed people to try their hand at it. My husbands character was of a scot who had gone out to the americas on a vessel and been left behind, so I ended up making the red and beige jacket, kilt, knitted white socks and then 18 months into my lacemaking learning I made him a jabot and cuffs to wear with the jacket. We bought a pair of trews which were worn more than the kilt (it can be very chilly even in August at many of these events). Although I spent more time in colonial type costume with the lovely tight laced wool waistcoat which kept my back nicely warm, he made me a couple of different leather fringed dresses, hand stitched and beaded, sewed beads onto my moccies and also some leggins up to the knee also beaded. My possibles bag was made by him for me with a fabulous turtle design on the front, cut away leather with felt showing through, plaited leather around the shell part, beads, fringes with bells on the bottom so they could tell whether i was in a hurry or not going about my business on the field by the jingles I made, I heard someone say âhere comes a woman on a mission,â LOL. His bag had a bear paw on the front, almost his signature for a while, beautiful work. I was always stunned by his ideas and the end product and able to offer suggestions sometimes. I tried to make a dream catcher once with a bear paw inside the lace to go in the centre of the ring, its ok but not as good as i would have liked, but I was still a fairly new lacemaker at the time, so i wont beat myself up about it. Another one had the dragonfly from one of my patterns. It hung on my wall for a long time and I hung it outside our tent at quite a few camps in the awning part. Re: [lace-chat] Pennsic Wars
Our group was an informal lot, and met up in a piece of privately owned ancient woodland with a big field attached. For a number of years it worked very well with a few competitions of hawk throwing and knife throwing. One session where they were working with flint and steel to light a fire. I learned quite a bit from one of our friends about cooking on the camp fire and many pleasant evenings spent round log fires, chatting. The sight of a field half full of tents and tipis with candle lanterns burning and some of the fires lit is magical. Many of the folk there took up some sort of craft, beadwork, weaving on finger looms and jewellery making so my lace pillow fitted in very well. We imported a few books from America about Buckskinning and still have those in our shelves today all these years later. Our costumes were generally made with cotton, wool or leather, most as practical as possible for working around the tent during the day and then dressing up in better for the evenings and my blanket coat is still up in the loft, which we made out of a whitney blanket. Some of our day stuff was a bit tongue in cheek and we once organised a hobby horse race with the men starting off running the course between the tents guaranteed to have us all in noisy laughter all afternoon. In the evening my husband sang a song he had made up mentioning various people and their part in the race was very well received. For One of the arachne lace exchanges my partner sent me the humming bird (before I bought the disc and made one myself). It was definitely the best one I could have received and is now attached to my long pocket which is part of my evening dressing up outfit, as well as some lace cuffs and a lace edged kerchief I made to wear to keep drafts off my neck and prevent pain but looked ideal. So I was able to bring both hobbies together for about 7 years before we stopped going, but we still have the costumes stored. We also went to the re enactors market when it was held in Oxford one year and close to there another year. Ruth Goodman was there manning her stall which was all about Tudor times which is her favourite time but she also does other television programs from other times down the centuries for british television one of which featured Pat (sorry my brains gone dead) the lady who got a cbe for services to lacemaking last year who showed her how to work a piece of bobbin lace to give to the lady of the mansion when they did a christmas special. Right time to get back into the here and now, I have some work to do. Sue T Dorset UK Okay, now I know it is SCA. I didn't know anything about either when I lived in Pennsylvania. I had heard the name, probably on Arachne at some time but never followed it up. Sounds like fun. I remember going to a reenactment in Lichfield, England when my kids were little and it sounds a lot like that. I went again on a visit and this time found a bobbin maker and bought my one and only jingle bobbin. I used to demo at another reenactment in Illinois every September, but it was only for a weekend, which was enough sometimes as it could be very cold. Sounds amazing and I did just look on google. Didn't see anything lace though sadly. We used to do living history American fur trapper times and we made a Tipi and used it for a couple of seasons camps. Amazing dwellings and I would think the yurt would be fantastic. Moving the 22 ft poles about because too difficult for us so we went back to using a trailer caravan and using a white wall A frame we made instead just to sit around in the day time. I took my lace pillow there several summers and did some bits of work. Always something that it didn't matter if it got dirty but would be useable if it came home clean at the end of the time. Re: [lace-chat] Caring for needles
About 15years ago I bought an old leather sewing case at a car boot sale. I was so surprised when I opened it because the contents were in such good condition, it has a holder across the middle with 6 reels of thread 4 of which look to be silk for mending stockings, needles of all sizes wrapped in little packages which have black tissue inside, to this day they are as shiny as new, I think this case must be at least 70 years old. There are very fine crochet hooks and a ribbon threader that I use to this day but cannot bring myself to use the needles in case they snap, would hate to lose them. [lace-chat] Caring for needles
This is a general question about sewing needles but also tatting needles and keeping them in good condition. I recently went to use some sewing needles that have been stored in a little cloth carry case and they look rusty at the point where they stick through the cloth so not something I would use to sew with, particularly not lace. This particular case has been sitting in a cupboard in our caravan so may have got damp at some time so understandable I suppose. My tatting needles have been kept sticking through the paper which came with it (to let me know what size they are), inside the self seal bag and inside a pencil type case and have a slight mark at that point although it doesnât affect them in use, certainly not yet. But of course I want to keep them in good condition so I can use them when I want to and wonder how best to do that. Any advice would be welcome. [lace-chat] Lace and vision
Hi spiders Recently I have been having more trouble with my already dry eyes appearing like I was looking through dirty spectacles and spent lots of time keep checking and cleaning them etc but then started to see things out of the side of my eye which became much more obvious after my recent trip away and coming back to computer, television etc. I am currently finishing off some knitting, easy pattern on almost auto pilot but hoping to get back to my lace making once that is complete.I got my eyes checked out yesterday and was told they are viscous floaters and that the left eye is the worst which I could clearly see on the letter chart when some of the letters were badly blurred. I have changed bits on my computer to increase the text size etc and I am currently learning how and where to look out of my eyes to get the best view of text etc but haven’t had my lace out in the last couple of weeks at least. I know some of you have had cateracts removed and other eye problems, have any of you had this problem and if so how did you best manage it. They say there is nothing they can do to help it but that gravity might actually move them lower out of my immediate view which would help a lot. Thanks to Clay and Sue Babbs coming to my rescue there are now three more photos on my Hurwitzend folder. Clay and I were discussing her tree and lace decorations and I explained that our tiny tree was now too small to hold all my pieces, some from exchanges but also lots of other little pieces done by myself or gifts from friends. Some are momentoes of lost family and friends including our two pet cats so I made a red curtain strip to hang from one of my internal doors and pin them on there each December. It is lovely to take them out of the tissue paper and pin them on. We also bought two glass angel bells which my husband decided needed lace skirts, so they still hang on the tree and the top angel had a lace gown made up using a strip of Christine Springett lace using gold beads in strategic places. Clay asked to see pictures so I took a couple of new ones showing the curtain with lace, the tree angel on her own and also the tree with all 3 angels on along with the little robins and lots of glass baubles although there is already a photo of the glass angel bell on her own in the folder. So with Sue Babbs help they are now in the right folder, something I couldnât manage to achieve. Merry Christmas to all you amateur electricians! This is cool, it looks like the house is jumping. As the story goes, the guy that owns this house lives north of Cincinnati , Ohio .. [lace-chat] Essential Tremors and gree nor blue tints continued
After reading emails about the calming effect of green tint on Essential Tremor I have been trying to research the effect of colour (green and today blue) on my mother with Parkinsons disease. [lace-chat] Good old days
Couldn't resist sending this BTW I am ancient!!! VBG Bring back any memories? Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favorite 'fast food' when you were growing up?' 'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him. 'All the food was slow.' 'C'mon, seriously.. Where did you eat?' 'It was a place called 'home,'' I explained. ! 'Mum cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate, I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.' By this time, the lad was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I'd figured his system could have handled it: Some parents NEVER owned their own house, wore jeans, set foot on a golf course, travelled out of the country or had a credit card. My parents never drove me to school... I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed (slow). We didn't have a television in our house until I was 10. It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at 10 PM, after playing the national anthem and epilogue; it came back on the air at about 6 a.m. And there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people... Pizzas were not delivered to our home... But milk was. All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers--My brother delivered a newspaper, seven days a week. He had to get up at 6AM every morning. Film stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the films. There were no movie ratings because all movies were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity or violence or almost anything offensive. If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing. Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it? MEMORIES from a friend: My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Lemonade bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it..I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old. How many do you remember? Headlight dip-switches on the floor of the car. Ignition switches on the dashboard. Trouser leg clips for bicycles without chain guards. Soldering irons you heated on a gas burner. Using hand signals for cars without turn indicators. > Older Than Dirt Quiz: Count all the ones that you remember, not the ones you were told about. Ratings at the bottom 1. Sweet cigarettes 2. Coffee shops with juke boxes 3. Home milk delivery in glass bottles 4. Party lines on the telephone 5. Newsreels before the movie 6. TV test patterns that came on at night after the last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning.. (There were only 2 channels[if you were fortunate]) 7. Peashooters 8. 33 rpm records 9. 45 RPM records 9a. 78 RPM records and wind-up gramophones 10. Hi-fi's 11. Metal ice trays with levers 12. Blue flashbulb 13. Cork popguns 14. Wash tub wringers 15. Bucket system ??? If you remembered 0-3 = You re still young If you remembered 3-6 = You are getting older If you remembered 7-10 = Don't tell your age If you remembered 11-14 = You're positively ancient! I must be 'positively ancient' but those memories are some of the best parts of my life. Don't forget to pass this along!! Especially to all your really OLD friendsI just did! (PS. I used a large type face so you could read it easily) Regards Sue. To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat y...@address.here. [lace-chat] Re: Borrowers
Hi All I've had words with the borrowers they say they are sorry for causing us all problems/challenges/money LOL Evidently they needed a 'chute' to get stuff to their home faster!! Maybe the tape and the magnifiers have been used similarly tape for mending, and magnifiers because they fancied a 'glass' table?? As for ghosts my children say that their room was haunted. When Kyra was little she used to 'talk' to Bobby. When we asked her who Bobby was she would say that he wore 'long short trousers and boots like daddy's' which we took to mean breeches and walking type boots. Patrick did the same Now, looking at censuses there was a Robert lived on the cottages around 180 years ago maybe it's him. They both stopped talking to him after they started school and Chris & I have never seen or heard anything in this house, although I have seen a ghost in a neighbours house and at my Step-Grandfathers house when I was about 8. So.. at least I found the pricking card and film, and my pricking is now pricked, just some bobbins to wind!! Sue in East Yorks where it can't decide whether to rain or be sunny, it's done both!!
