Omar,
I concur with Michael. You need to correct this problem. It's not
something you want to ignore.

Please provide us with the additional information he requested.

Just a WAG: did you connect the cat5 cables to the correct NICs?

ps aux | grep sys

Do you have any running process like syslog? If yes, then you can kill
it.

If not, as I mentioned, these messages are generated by the kernel
itself and it maybe that kernel generated messages *must* goto console.

Either way, as I have been insisting, you need to correct the root cause
of these symptomatic messages. What is the underlying cause?

Please, post a few lines from /var/log/kern.log or /var/log/syslog that
immediately precede some of these `NET ... suppressed' messages -- we
can help you eliminate the root cause.

Trust me, you will not be satisfied with your firewall until you
eliminate this problem. Whatever this problem is, it is a bad thing and
you must correct it and not ignore it.

I think you are THE MAN! I really appreciate this man. I'm gonna give it a

Yes:

svi sysklogd stop

However, you really do *NOT* want to do this!

Look near the end of your /etc/syslog.conf -- is there something like
these?

*.emerg *

*.err |/dev/console

I'm not familiar with Eigerstein, so I don't know what the installed
default it; but, on Dachstein the default is the *.emerg line. That
line means that any messages of priority `emerg' or higher will go to
every local tty. The problem is, the only severity higher than emerg is
panic. My point here is that the underlying cause of this message is
probably important if it is showing up on your console.

Besides, even if this message is *not* important, shutting off syslogd
will shutdown most logging on your system. Logging is good. Logging
allows you to troubleshoot things when they go wrong. Things will go
wrong.

What do you think?

> I am asking for your help please.

Everybody has tap danced around your original question for a reason;
but, nobody has come out and explained it to you.

Consider this:

May 19 11:09:32 trout kernel: martian source c521fea9 for fea9, dev
eth1
May 19 11:09:32 trout kernel: ll header: ff ff ff ff ff ff 00 01 03 79
6c a9 08 00
May 19 11:09:36 trout kernel: NET: 6 messages suppressed.

The 'NET ... suppressed' message is symptomatic of some other problem.
Please, re-read my last sentence.

In my example, above, the *real* problem is an influx of `martians' and
`ll headers' messages.

Sometimes, when the there is a flood of messages through syslogd, it
recognizes that repetition and consolidates repeated messages, like
this:

May 19 21:34:51 trout last message repeated 3 times

Can you imagine how many more messages you'd be dealing with, if it
actually logged every one, instead of this consolidation? Imagine if
that number `3' was actually `300' ;<

In your case, the kernel itself recognizes the repetition and
consolidates repeated messages.

Bottomline, if you identify the root cause of this message flooding, and
correct it, then you will no longer witness these 'NET ... suppressed'
messages.

For the hardware I had good luck with Eicon's Diva Server boards,

give you 16 B channels.

The following message describes some linux specific driver issues:

A new driver with binaries for kernel 2.4.18 seems to be avalible "real soon now".
Alternatively an open source driver is availible, which would require rolling your own
kernel.

I didn't try it out yet, as you have ofcourse some hardware
problems, most isdncards only allow at most two connections, so
you will get out of pci /isa slots and interrupts.
I used for the isdn connection the following programm
isdn4linux
www.isdn4linux.de
the faq is rather extensiv,
special interest will be :
http://www.isdn4linux.de/faq/i4lfaq-5.html#ss5.14
and a few links from this question.

http://www.isdn4linux.de/faq/i4lfaq-6.html#config_manycards

we limited the number of utilities in the isdn.lrp for reason of size, if
you have a problem please feel free to ask again.
Please if you succeed in accomplishing this task report back too :)

Try this

For getting W2K and Free Swan to cooperate.
ALso, for SSH on WIndows 2000 try loading the Cygwin
tools on your system OR several more methods of ssh on
WIndows systems

[leaf-user] ISDN with 16 lines/modems possible with Bering ?

2002-05-21 Thread Francois BERGERET

Hi folks and gurus !

I have started Bering this week on PPPoE / WANADOO /
France Telecom with success !
Previous was K.HADDLEY PPPoE image distro and it was ok during
more than one year without any problem or bug/reset.

Many thanks to all of you who accept to share you knowledges !

Now, I want to add IPSec between two Bering's PC to connect
together two W2K local nets...

But, my question is other today :
One of my friends want to have 15/20 ISDN lines/modems to connect
externals employees to his company's mail server.
This server have not other access, no Internet or WAN.

CISCO has a router to do that, but, is it possible to do with Bering ?

Best Regards.
Francois BERGERET

Omar,
We're not trying to be difficult. We just need some additional
information from you. The first bit that would help is "uname -a". This
will tell us which branch/release you're using.

The second bit is verification that you're using a null modem/laplink
serial cable. A standard cable will not work.

Last but not least, please paste in-line the contents of all files you
modified in your attempt to get serial console to work.

With this information we should be able to help you. I hope this
information is useful.

Win2k ipsec client works reliably with Bering with preshared secrets and
x509 certificates. Documentation is found at

Hey, guess what? I'm new to this whole LRP thing, I've been really trying
to follow protocol in seeking help with these hiccups. My apologies if my
descriptions are not a "distinct" and "exact" as you would like them to be.
I am really just grasping at straws, I now see that this probably isn't
necessarily the right place to seek help because I am a newbie, so I feel
confident that if I keep at it I'll get it worked out somehow on my own.
You Linux techies just keep doing your thing, when I get more buffed with
this maybe then I'll come back to the list if needs be.

Just for the record I have checked and tried every instruction/documentation
I could find related to this issue, checked the capabilities against my LRP
distro and done tests on my cable. Don't worry about it tho' I'll get it.

What happened since you sent your prior message to reassure you about
suitability of your cable? And why is "pretty sure" sure enough for a
troubleshooting exercise? Since you *know* there is a problem, isn't it
worth a few minutes of your time to check this as a possible source of the
problem ... especially since you yourself suggested it as a candidate for
the cause?

Mike, Charles, and I have all tried to respond to your very vague problem
descriptions ... but leaf-user is a troubleshooting list, not the Psychic
Friends Network. We can't read your mind, and we don't get to see what you
are seeing. If you don't actually describe the details of your setup, what
you did, and how it failed, we can't help you spot what is wrong.

At this point, you haven't even been definite about which LEAF (not LRP)
variant you are using (an early message said you "think" it is Eigerstein 2
with "a few modifications to tune it to my needs"), let alone anything that
might help us spot the actual problem with your setup. So we've referred
you to standard HowTo-like docs, which describe the procedure (and its
limitations) in general terms; we can do no more in individual responses,
given the absence of any troubleshooting details in your messages.

Have a look at SSH Sentinel (ssh.com). My understanding is that
personal use is free, but you should read the fine print to be sure.
It's know as a solid IPSec client for windows and works well with
FreeS/WAN.

Re: [leaf-user] A NET question

2002-05-21 Thread Ray Olszewski

The documents that Mike referred you to do discuss cable issues, though
perhaps briefly enough that you missed it when you read them. To connect 2
computers, you need either a null-modem cable or a regular cable with a
null-modem adapter ... this is not a LEAF or even a Linux issue, but a
standard bit of PC hardware lore.

Unless you are interested in building your own cable, there isn't much
point in including diagrams or pictures; you get the right cable or adapter
by reading the labels on the packages at the store. If you do want to
build your own cable, I'm sure a Google search will direct you to any of
the many hardware sites that discuss how to do this.

Serial support has been well documented throughout the mailing list. First
off, I might try using a real serial console. I use securecrt (w/ serial
support) it works really well. Secondly.. I think the first problem might
be the fact that there is not serial support by default. You will need
either to grab the serial.o file and load it with the other modules
(although you won't see kernel boot messages, or you will need to grab a
linux kernel w/ serial support compile in. And lastly, just try reading the
docs

If you have some more specific questions, please ask them...

Did you read this HOWTO?
