I agree with all who made inputs about Legacy needing charting capabilities

as, Reunion, and Family Tree Maker (that I use for charts) , and GenBox.
Charting Companion and Tree Draw are not the answer. Very inferior when
compared
to the above. This has been discussed many times in the past and looks like
it
is back again. Legacy needs to listen. My opinion anyway.

Family Historian also does it, but the chart is basic.

 My opions anyway.

Legacy (or one of the add ons) needs this chart. It is the best for
family reunions. And only takes one click

[LegacyUG] Which files do I back up?

2006-11-27 Thread Elaine O'Neill

I have been through the archives and did not find the answer to my
specific question. I don't know if I'm just not using the right
criteria or if I'm simply missing something. This is a very basic
question and I'm sure the answer is somewhere, I just haven't found
it.

Anyway, I finally got a new CD burner (my other one wouldn't recognize
any disks) and I want to back my family files up on a regular basis.
My question is WHICH files do I back up to maintain current backups of
my family files? Do I just back up the zip files? Do I back up
everything in my C:/Legacy/Data folder? Or do I back up both? I'm
relatively new to Legacy after using FamilyTreeMaker for years. FTM
didn't make zip files, and it was easy to tell the correct files to
back up. I'm just a bit confused and don't want to miss anything.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Off Topic. Please answer at my address.
My Windows 98 computer is the one that handles my Email. I have used
Norton
Antivirus for years. I need to update it for 2007, but cannot find a
Norton
Product to do so. Last year I was able to update with Norton for XP, but
the

have any suggestions about what I could use for virus protection of Win98,
free or otherwise? What are other Win 98 users using for 2007? Your
suggestions will be much appreciated. Thank you. Winifred

Elaine, basically you only need to back up your zip files, you should have
both one containing the family data and one containing the multimedia
(pictures etc.). You may also like to back up the contents of the Settings
folder which contains the information relating to how you have set up the
various screens/reports/web pages etc.

[LegacyUG] Multimedia Files

2006-11-27 Thread LloydLHite31
Hello List,
What is the proper way to put pictures in Legacy? I have a folder in My
Pictures named Obituary Pictures and I copied the file and pasted it in the
Picture folder in Legacy. I have open the file and verified all the pictures in

it, however, when I open Legacy and click on a person to add the picture to and

then click on Tools Picture Center or whatever, most of the pictures will
show in the list but, two or three will not show in the list. I can open the
folder in Legacy and they are there with the correct file extension. I will get
the message that the file cannot be found and if I want to search for it. I
have tried everything I know to do including deleting the picture folder and
reloading it to uninstalling Legacy and reinstalling it. Does anyone have
any advice on how to correct the problem?

2006-11-27 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
When you run Legacy's backup, as far as I know, it
does all data files needed. Never had a problem. Send
the whole backup, as a zip. When I backed up to my old
CD burner I learned it could not handle 100Mg disks.
If you are concerned, run the standard backup, then
restore to another place. Once convinced, delete the
test one. I also didn't trust it at first.

RE: [LegacyUG] Multimedia Files

2006-11-27 Thread ronald ferguson
Lloyd, I am not fully clear as to what you are saying but may I initially
clarify one or two points. It is not necessary to put your pictures in the
Picture folder in Legacy (although apart from taking up more memory, if you
don't delete the originals, there is nothing wrong with doing this.)
Secondly Legacy only remembers the path as to where the pictures are and
finally the Picture List only shows those pictures which have been linked to
a person or event etc.

This only leads to four possibilities:
1) the path is incorrect
2) the file name is incorrect
3) the picture is not linked to anything
4) the picture isn't in the folder

If 2) and 4) are correct, as you say, then the problem would seem to be
either 1) or 3), so the first thing I would do is to check that the picture
is linked to something.

There is one remote possiblity that I have come across and that is that the
file extension is incorrect ie the extension given in the name is wrong. You
can check this by trying to open the picture in Irfan View which will tell
you if this is the case. (other programs may also do this but I don't know
of one.)

Re: [LegacyUG] couple married twice

2006-11-27 Thread Susan Daily

Mary Ann,
I added a new wife and selected the same person (link to an existing
person), and used the new date. I made sure to note the status of the
divorce in the previous MRIN. I also changed the wording in the second
marriage to say remarried instead of married - comes out much
neater and clearer.

So it reads something like (from memory):
John Doe married Jane Smith on 2 Feb 1966. This marriage ended in
divorce on 28 Jan 1970. John Doe remarried Jane Smith on 6 Aug 1980.

[LegacyUG] Birth/Death locations

2006-11-27 Thread eldestdaughter
I would appreciate knowing how others cite a birth or death location when the
event happened on a body of water. Other than a few relatives who were
reportedly born/died on steamships headed to the US, I am particularly
referring to accidents on lakes/rivers. I have considered the embarkation
port, the name of the lake, the state to which the lake is contiguous or the
area where most of the bodies washed up. I have been unable to locate death
certificates or burial locations for about 6 people, and I don't want to add
the name of the steamship to the location field. I can always add notes in the
events or cause of death field, but the actually location has me stymied.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

There is not an eay answer to this. I only have one relative for whom this
specific circumstance applies and he was a war casualty who died in the
English Channel. As such the exact cause of death is not known and as I do
not know the ship he was on only the sea in which he died. His body was
never recovered. Thus the entry can only be Cause: War Casualty. Place: The
English Channel.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Birth/Death locations
Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2006 20:59:03 +

I would appreciate knowing how others cite a birth or death location when
the event happened on a body of water. Other than a few relatives who were
reportedly born/died on steamships headed to the US, I am particularly
referring to accidents on lakes/rivers. I have considered the embarkation
port, the name of the lake, the state to which the lake is contiguous or
the area where most of the bodies washed up. I have been unable to locate
death certificates or burial locations for about 6 people, and I don't want
to add the name of the steamship to the location field. I can always add
notes in the events or cause of death field, but the actually location has
me stymied.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

June, assuming that you used the Legacy default installation, it is in

see all of the .usr files individually which in my understanding would need
to be selected one by one (or, of course, by selecting them all) but I
haven't yet found a Setting folder as such which contain all of those

Elaine, basically you only need to back up your zip files, you should have
both one containing the family data and one containing the multimedia
(pictures etc.). You may also like to back up the contents of the Settings
folder which contains the information relating to how you have set up the
various screens/reports/web pages etc.

What you propose is very similar to what TMG already offers. (And if I

Re: [LegacyUG] Which files do I back up?

2006-11-27 Thread Ron Taylor

Elaine,

Others have given good advice on what and how to backup Legacy data. Here
are a couple more ideas that I have found helpful.

I regularly run the FileFile MaintenanceCheck/Repair to be sure that the
database has no structural problems. Then if the database needs to be
restored, I will not have to wonder if it had errors before the backup.

I also include the full Legacy install file with my backup so that if I need
to return to that earlier data I will also be able to re-install the version
of the program which created the backup. This could prove useful if a later
version was shown to be responsible for corruption of the data.

And last, just to second what has been said about the backup...always use
the zipped backup files to store or move the database because they will
contain all the pieces of the data structure which the Legacy program
utilizes in the Microsoft Access database.

Based on recent memos from Millennia, it seems that they are working on a
programmed method to restore the backed up multimedia files so that those
items will be easy for the end user to move and restore like the regular
data files. That will be a welcome improvement.

Tehre is no hard and fast way to handle data in genealogy. For instance, I

I presume you already have the couple's original marriage and then any
other marriages they contracted entered.

Click on the icon representing the wife/wives of the husband and then
select Add New Wife and then select Link to an Existing Person. Choose
the woman to whom he was previously married and has married again.

Legacy will point out that he is already linked to this woman and ask if

Llyod;

Have you tried deleting the pictures that are the problem and reloading them
with a new name? Being that this is a problem with just a few pictures
instead of the whole folder, it seems to me that you may have cross linked
sectors on your drive. To solve this problem, run disk check (dskchk) with
the f option, this will convert the crosslinked sectors to files which can
then be deleted. This is a function of the computers operating system, it is
not a Legacy function.

Re: [LegacyUG] Which files do I back up?

2006-11-27 Thread Cathy

Hi Ron,
Settings isn't a default folder - unless it's very recently been
introduced. It's one you've chosen to create to save Report Settings etc.

I also have created a folder but mine is called Report Options ;-)

When you are saving report or web page options, like in all save
dialogues, you have the choice of where you save them. It's a good
idea to create a special folder so that they are easily backed up.
Also give the files a useful name so it's easy to choose which one to load.

I have Karen's Replicator set up to save my .usr files (along with
bits and pieces from other programs) to my Backup folder - which I
then backup to my external hard drive and periodically cut to CD.
Like all settings, the .usr files can be recreated but it takes time
going through Options Customise etc.

Other settings you might want to backup are Colour Schemes you've created.

Cheers,
Cathy

Ron,

I think you must have set this up yourself somehow. I don't have such a
folder and all the report settings etc are in the data folder.

June, assuming that you used the Legacy default installation, it is in
C:\Legacy and comes after the Legacy Home and Pictures folders. The usr
files which you see are those generated by Legacy (personally I don't bother
to back them up as Legacy will recreate them when reinstalled) and the
folder is at the top before you get to them

Ron, Where is the Settings folder you mention? I can't see such a folder. I
see all of the .usr files individually which in my understanding would need
to be selected one by one (or, of course, by selecting them all) but I
haven't yet found a Setting folder as such which contain all of those
settings. What am I missing?

Elaine, basically you only need to back up your zip files, you should have
both one containing the family data and one containing the multimedia
(pictures etc.). You may also like to back up the contents of the Settings
folder which contains the information relating to how you have set up the
various screens/reports/web pages etc.

Elaine O'.

Re: [LegacyUG] Multimedia Files

2006-11-27 Thread Cathy

Hi Lloyd,
Like Ron, I'm not quite clear what you were asking originally. You
use file at times when I think you mean folder - but I'm not sure.

Legacy has a Picture folder under the Program folder as it's a good
idea to keep all the pictures you attach to Legacy together. Whether
you keep them in the folder Legacy provides or elsewhere is up to
you. If you don't put the photos you are attaching together in a
folder or set of folders, then the only way you have to collect them
is the multimedia backup in Legacy. This creates a very large file if
you have attached lots of photos, especially if you haven't thought
about resolution. Unless you understand unzipping, you also have
problems when you come to unzip this file on another computer as it
will recreate all the folders from the originating computer.

I keep my Legacy pictures in subfolders in a folder called Legacy
pictures in My Pictures. I've moved My Pictures so the path is C:\My
Pictures\Legacy Pictures\Harris ...
This means that the path is the same on both my laptop and my
desktop. I like to keep all my Pics together.

Legacy doesn't need large archive sized copies of pictures, so, with
the exception of source documents which need to be a higher
resolution in order to be read, I don't attach photos larger than
Screen sized. Even this small is 2 or 3 times larger than most uses in Legacy.
So, unlike Ron, I do have two copies on my hard drive - though not
necessarily the same resolution or format. I also have them all backed up.

Size may be why the couple of pictures aren't showing up. Your
computer may have run out of display memory.

Free programs like Irfanview or Faststone Image Viewer - which I now
use more often than Irfanview as it's interface is easier - will
batch resize photos and batch convert from one format to another. If
you haven't used these features before, just make sure you have
backups and experiment.

It's well worth reading the Photo Tips on the Legacy Web site. Follow
the Tips from the Experts link on the Legacy Home Tab.

Thanks Ron for you response. I did as you suggested and they are all
in Legacy. I am wondering why there is a folder named Pictures in
the Legacy folder.

RE: [LegacyUG] Birth/Death locations

2006-11-27 Thread B. T. Wehner
I have two cases in my family, one where a relative was born at sea and
another where the relative died at sea. I have the birth as Aboard ship at
sea, Atlantic Ocean. The death is shown as Aboard ship at sea, near Bahia
state of Brazil, Atlantic Ocean. The cause of death was yellow fever, and
Brazilian authorities would not allow the ship in port. I don't know the
vessel name in either case.

In cases similar to yours, I would probably name the body of water and the
best location near the accident site (near ...), if available. If the lake
or river was entirely within one state, province or country, I would show
the appropriate name. Causes might be shipwreck, drowning, etc.

I would appreciate knowing how others cite a birth or death location when
the event happened on a body of water. Other than a few relatives who were
reportedly born/died on steamships headed to the US, I am particularly
referring to accidents on lakes/rivers. I have considered the embarkation
port, the name of the lake, the state to which the lake is contiguous or the
area where most of the bodies washed up. I have been unable to locate death
certificates or burial locations for about 6 people, and I don't want to add
the name of the steamship to the location field. I can always add notes in
the events or cause of death field, but the actually location has me
stymied.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Cathy,

I'm not going to disagree with you but I have absolutely no recollection
of ever having created it! I've assumed it was there by default since I
spotted it (or perhaps respotted it) a while back which was when I got 2
different versions of my web settings mixed up. Must say that that made
life interesting for a while ;-)

Hi Ron,
Settings isn't a default folder - unless it's very recently been
introduced. It's one you've chosen to create to save Report Settings etc.

I also have created a folder but mine is called Report Options ;-)

When you are saving report or web page options, like in all save
dialogues, you have the choice of where you save them. It's a good idea to
create a special folder so that they are easily backed up. Also give the
files a useful name so it's easy to choose which one to load.

I have Karen's Replicator set up to save my .usr files (along with bits
and pieces from other programs) to my Backup folder - which I then backup
to my external hard drive and periodically cut to CD. Like all settings,
the .usr files can be recreated but it takes time going through Options
Customise etc.

Other settings you might want to backup are Colour Schemes you've
created.

Cheers,
Cathy

Re: [LegacyUG] Birth/Death locations

2006-11-27 Thread Susan Daily

I have a fisherman who drowned at sea when his ship sank. I've entered
the location in the four comma format as At Sea, La Have Bank, Nova
Scotia, Canada and changed the short location name to read sea on La
Have Bank, Nova Scotia with the preposition changed to at (haven't
tested the preposition yet).

You can adapt Jenny's idea to read something like - long location:
Winchester,(Mystic Lake), Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA and
short location to Mystic Lake in Winchester, MA so that He died at
Mystic Lake... would be the wording in the report. You can change the
preposition to read in or on as appropriate. Note that by putting
the body of water in parenthesis, this place gets sorted with the
town.

Re: [LegacyUG] couple married twice

2006-11-27 Thread E.Rodier
Mary Ann,
Do you want one group sheet or two? The couple in my files had one son born
during each marriage and I wanted to keep the family together on one group
sheet. Second marriage was on the same date and month as the first marriage.
No other spouses were involved.

Consider the Legacy reports and charts for each data entry option. Check
file transfers if you use non-Legacy products for wall charts or a web site.
