[LegacyUG] Problem with modified date

2006-12-15 Thread glove
I've only just noticed this but there appears to be a problem in the
modified date field (which I have showing on the family screen). This only
seems to occur if you do the following:

>From an individual that has at least one source open the individual screen.
>From there choose a field that has an entry with an assigned source and open
the source.
Close without changing anything and then cancel from the individual screen.
Nothing has changed but the date modified is updated.

This does not happen if you open a source directly from the family view
icon.

Can anyone else confirm that this is not just me?
Graham

Here we go again, complaining about Legacy's lack of a Top Down Box Tree. I
use FTM to make my Trees. ( FTM is what is taught at the local college) No
company's Trees, except maybe Mac's Reunion is better. My opinion anyway.
I sure hope the in the next revision or update we see included Real Good
Trees. If this happens, Legacy would rule the industry.

I have an additional issue, that is, names in a non-Latin languages,
this gives many different spellings when names pop up in latin languages
or when you have to translate it yourself.. And no way of recording the
original spelling. I started to put these in a document of Word, and now
face the task of integrating them user-friendly into Legacy. Probably I
will use PDF files or print screens .jpg and attach them to the
individual. Any other idea's are welcome though I am still in

Re: [LegacyUG] Attaching Digital material

2006-12-15 Thread WILLIAM HATHAWAY

Ron, Jim, others interested,

I agree with Jim - very general question. But I too include any detail I
can that might be relevant to people in my file. I (in progress) point to
all the digital media - scanned photos, digital camera pics, video and audio
clips, etc.) I have on family. (Fifty years of my photography, plus a
hundred years of family records - I hope to live long enough to get it all
in one package - digitized and archived in permanent media.)

I too also have separate (Legacy file) data bases for some names which are
spelled the same and may have lived in the same geographical area but (so
far) I have not found any connection. Even if I never do - others working
after me will not have to plow the same ground. They can see that these
have been explored and need only know that the work has been done. Also
several separate just for testing various "how-to" techniques for performing
large changes. If my tests fail, I do not have to recover - my "good" file
still exists untouched (although I *always* keep backups on external media
as I proceed - burnt once, never again. BTW - I don't "zip" - storage media
is too cheap to bother compressing - I like my data raw. Floppy drives are
nearly as hard to find as punch cards these days.)

Also any info downloaded - I always segregate that until I see what parts
are legit for including in my personal family. (The Internet has quite a
collection of inconsistencies and outright nonsense in genealogy as it does
on any topic - although it does seem (to me so far) to have a better "signal
to noise" than many other areas - I think this reflects the seriousness of
those involved and their personal interest.)

More general though - I do not see Legacy as my "single database." I have
been exploring completely separate software to do an inventory of my
collectibles - from books to scientific instruments to artwork - both stuff
of others I've collected and my own creations ( www.teslamania.com ) .
Legacy is too specialized for family relationships and their stories or
history to handle such things as cataloging music, video, audio, property,
etc. I found one program which looked promising, but it is not able to
print out my lists in PDF - a virtual necessity for a collector. Some
people love Excel. I'll spare you my rude expletives.

RE: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw

2006-12-15 Thread Cathy

My mind always boggles at the thought of an "All in One" tree.

To put only the descendants of my maternal grandparents on a wall
chart at a readable size (11pt and 9 pt fonts) takes 2 B1 sized
charts (B1 paper is 1000 x 707 mm). I repeat the children on both
charts but have a note that the rest of the descendants for other
branches are on the other chart. My maternal grandparents had 8
children, 6 of whom had children. One branch takes a chart to
themselves as they joined a religious sect that not only doesn't
believe in birth control but also believes in early marriage and very
large families. It's only recently we've had positive contact and
collected this part of the current tree.

I did the chart on two sheets as most of our family reunions are
picnics in parks. I did shrink them to A1 size (841x594mm) so they
were easier to hold and pass around.

Legacy appears not to display unicode correctly, but I did not do a
full test and I don't have my system set to do non-english characters.

I really favor the approach of converting the Word to PDF then the
font is preserved and zoomable. Adobe and windoze are unicode
compliant.

I would think Legacy could add unicode display since the allow special
ascii characters.

Anybody out there who has done non-English character entry in Legacy?

14-43-21-w4.

That means it is in Section 14 of Township 43, Range 21 miles West of the
fourth Meridian. LOL, well, ok, I can use a Rand McNally Atlas (or highway
map) and find it.

Dorenlee is no longer a incorporated municipality, but it *does* exist, and
the latest population is reported as 2. It is a little bit South of New
Norway (on the shores of Red Deer Lake), East of Samson Lake Indian Reserve.
Last I heard there are a grain elevator and a cemetery there.

So my query is: How does a person change a Canadian legal location code to
its correct latitude or longitude? Is it even possible? If not possible, how
best to store this information? Just in notes of the person involved?

Thank you.

Robert

I take your point Cathy and I should have been more specific but I was
thinking more of "All-in-One" style trees.
For a large tree to fit one page the dimensions would be unreadable. I can
only say that in this type of case I haven't been able to do it.

Sadly the thing that a list like this cannot put over to the reader is the
tone of voice. People often write as they speak. You can say the same
sentence in different ways and it means something different. Also the
expression on a persons face can help sell the meanings of the words. Let's
try and be as understanding as possible, particularly at this season of

The problem is that people do tend to get rude when forgetting that many
times, genealogists are older people and not always computer literate.
Rather than being so rude, why not just kindly remind someone how to send in
plain text. As for you, Dora, you can be as rude as anyone. Legacy Users
are made up of all peoples from all over the world with different cultures
and perceptions. I try to remember that when I see rude comments. Overall,
the list is great and I learn something about Legacy almost daily. Paul

[LegacyUG] Unicode Support

2006-12-15 Thread Jim Liddil

I installed various languages and keyboards on my XP pro system along
with extended support for Notepad. Legacy does display unicode fonts
in the notes fields but the typical entry fields (surname) don't
support viewing the fonts, only Legacy Special character set.

Having done work of this type in Oracle I know that the fields need to
support double-byte characters to work with Unicode. It seems the
note field does support this but not the other fields. Or at least I
can't get it to work.

Hi Ron,

Your response helps a whole lot. I have version 2, and it did not get
reinstalled the last time I cleaned out my computer. I did some checking and
see that they have gone to ver 3, and I can upgrade for just a bit of $$. I
do remember not being particularly happy with ver 2.

I did check out your website ... love those scrolling charts! #3 on your
list bothers me since I do all of my work via printer, not website. I don't
understand why they don't let your shrink to 8.5 x 11 pages, though probably
manipulation by removing information or generations could whittle it down to
that point.

Again, thank you.

is necessary to download Tree Draw Viewer (FOC from my site).

There are, however, some disadvantages.
1. Whilst it auto updates entries, if a specified entry is void when entered
it will not enter new data.
2. There is no All-in-one-Tree.
3. It will not shrink a tree to fit a single PDF page.
4. Multiple PDF pages are spilt in the data panels (instead of only in the

5. Some auto amendments are no easy to pick out.

RE: [LegacyUG] Child Event

2006-12-15 Thread Cathy

Hi Ron,

Depends what you call your specific tree.
It will give all descendants of the originating couple (or couples in
the case of Multiple Descent Report)
They'll all be related but how distantly depends on how far out
you've researched your tree.

I see an Ancestor Report as a summary report - which of course is all
that some are interested in seeing.

Re: [LegacyUG] Non-latin languages

2006-12-15 Thread Jim Liddil

Legacy appears not to display unicode correctly, but I did not do a
full test and I don't have my system set to do non-english characters.

I really favor the approach of converting the Word to PDF then the
font is preserved and zoomable. Adobe and windoze are unicode
compliant.

I would think Legacy could add unicode display since the allow special
ascii characters.

Anybody out there who has done non-English character entry in Legacy?

That's covered. Actually the names are in a Word document already.
I have no idea if Legacy is Unicode compliant though and what would it
do for non-latin
languages? I am not able to type non-latin in Legacy notes for instance.
I am mainly interested in the use of Legacy to record it. As you mention
PDF is a way, but
only if you have some more info to put in.
I am mostly looking for a way to attach the name written in original
non-latin language, that's
why I was thinking of selecting the name in Word and then capture it
(like print screen), save
it as .jpg file. I use a nice tool for this called FastStone Capture,
that handles the job very well.
I hoped to get some input on this from LUG users, maybe there are other
ways to add it to Legacy.

RE: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw

2006-12-15 Thread Cathy
I agree. TreeDraw makes very good charts - but it takes some learning
- especially learning to select sections of your chart and group and
ungroup to move sections or edit or add information.
Also, if you want different coloured lines for different sections,
but not different coloured text, you need to change the line colour
in Preferences before bringing in that section to avoid the tedium of
changing them one by one.

It does have disadvantages - the main ones for me
You can't choose to remove the quoted name when importing your tree.
You can't choose to import just the preferred picture - it's all
or none. (you can add any photos you like individually)

Ron, I'm not sure what you mean by "not shrink to one PDF page"
You can set the page size to different sizes and can shrink to fit -
provided you've chosen a large enough size - I don't think it will
shrink to unreadable dimensions.

If I want my chart on one sheet, I sort this out before going to export.

You don't get PDF page until you export to PDF.

Cathy

Laura,

From my point of view yes and yes. You can see the outputs on may
web site by clicking on the "name holder" of any Pedigree Page (see below).
On the contents page you can also access some full Descendant Trees
but it is necessary to download Tree Draw Viewer (FOC from my site).

There are, however, some disadvantages.
1. Whilst it auto updates entries, if a specified entry is void when
entered it will not enter new data.

2. There is no All-in-one-Tree.
3. It will not shrink a tree to fit a single PDF page.
4. Multiple PDF pages are spilt in the data panels (instead of only
in the lines)

5. Some auto amendments are no easy to pick out.

Hope this helps,

Ron Ferguson

Re: [LegacyUG] Child Event

To get all the child events, you need to use one of the Descendant
Reports or Multiple Line of Descent.

The Ancestor report is limited to direct line ancestors.

Re: [LegacyUG] Non-latin languages

2006-12-15 Thread Keren
Well, keyboard and added languages in Word and/or XP are not an issue
with me.

RE: [LegacyUG] Child Event

2006-12-15 Thread ronald ferguson

Terry,

Good for him, but I'm afraid the answer is still no (even for England).

A work around would be to make an rtf file and load this into a Word Processor.
Make also an individual report for the child including his events and paste the
events in at the appropriate place.
The difficulty you face is that with the sole exception of Word (so I beliieve)
You would have to re-enter the pictures into file.

[LegacyUG] Canadian Legal Location codes & Legacy?

2006-12-15 Thread Robert Carneal
Hello everyone. We know about Latitudes and Longitudes in legacy. I, for
one, use them extensively.

If we have a person familiar with converting Canadian legal location to the
correct latitude and longitude, could you write me please?

Suppose I have Dorenlee, Alberta as a location. Its legal Canadian location
is given as:

Thank you.

Robert

[LegacyUG] Non-latin languages

2006-12-15 Thread Jim Liddil

I think PDF is the way to go for this issue if all else fails. In
Word you can use various other keyboards for a given language. I have
had a lot of experience with this for Chinese writers. I am not sure
if Legacy is Unicode compliant and would support entry of non-english
characters. If it does then you can use the Windows language support
features.

Jim

I have an additional issue, that is, names in a non-Latin languages,
this gives many different spellings when names pop up in latin languages
or when you have to translate it yourself.. And no way of recording the
original spelling. I started to put these in a document of Word, and now
face the task of integrating them user-friendly into Legacy. Probably I
will use PDF files or print screens .jpg and attach them to the
individual. Any other idea's are welcome though I am still in
doubt how to do this.

(marriage), but his will was signed "William" so that's what I use as
the preferred name. My database is primarily for posting at RootsWeb,
however, and other researchers of this line most often use
"Wilhelmus" for this individual. In order to have my file picked up
in searches, I now show him as "William or Wilhelmus."
May I add to this, since we have the wonderful feature of AKA's it is
made easier to clarify all the names used by an ancestor. In the tittle
suffix I place info about were the AKA was found. i.e. Say John Smith
was spelled John Smitt in his marriage record in 1830. I place in the
suffix His MARR-1830, this way I will always know, when I search through
the name list which spellings were used and when. Very handy when I go
through digitalized records.
Before this I was taught to use the spelling of the name (first and
last) of birth/bap etc All the other spellings went into the notes.
Actually I believed then it was a general rule :-))
Still this way I always know were the name comes from, that's why I am
still using the birth/bap etc name as main one, see no use in changing
it with so many names in my database.

Hi Diane,

You did nothing wrong, and no need to apologise. You wrote to the list
with a question, and I responded, is all that happened. I only
mentioned that I wasn't Sherry because you'd addressed your post to her
and may have been expecting her to reply, so I was simply pointing out
that it was someone else answering. I'm glad I was able to help you. :-)

As it turns out, we've since heard that Sherry is having power problems,
so you'd have been waiting a while for her to reply it seems. This is
one of the great strengths of a list like ours - anyone can chime in
when they see a need, so you aren't waiting for one particular person
who may not be available just when you need them.

Sherry, when you catch up with the mail, I hope you've come through that
storm okay. I can see stories about it on CNN.com now that I know to
look
(http://www.cnn.com/2006/WEATHER/12/15/northwest.storm.ap/index.html).
A distant cousin of my partner's, who I was chatting to in IM yesterday,
mentioned the high winds they were getting in Portland OR but I had no
idea it was so bad at the time. Not what people need so close to the
holiday season! :-(

Diane, keep posting your questions here as they arise, and we will all
do our best to help you find the answers you need. The only silly
question is one you don't ask. Remember, you're not only helping
yourself when you ask here, you are helping others who are reading this
list, too. :-)

Hi Diane,

I'm not Sherry, but I think I can help point you in the right
direction. :-)

You can have both Legacy 5 and Legacy 6 on your computer at the
same time, if you install them in separate directories.

But, if you had Legacy 5 Deluxe you don't automatically get deluxe
when you download the new version. You can purchase an upgrade
for a cheaper price than buying it "new". See the links on the
right at http://legacyfamilytree.com/ for purchasing Deluxe, and
upgrading to Deluxe.

An update for Legacy 5 was announced in the past few days, and
this may be what you downloaded.

Hope this helps. :-)

If I download Legacy 6 will I lose my Deluxe Edition features?

Re: [LegacyUG] User Manual

2006-12-15 Thread Bob Janice

Marie,

I agree wholeheartedly! While the on-line help is extremely good,
having the manual open in front of you and being able quickly browse
through the chapters is very convenient. I also do the same thing as
you - read through the manual while waiting for an appointment or any
other "slow" time - I've picked up quite a few tips and new ways to do
things that way.

RE: [LegacyUG] Genealogy Etiquette

2006-12-15 Thread Paul C. Abell

  Hi Diane,

I'm not Sherry, but I think I can help point you in the right direction. :-)

You can have both Legacy 5 and Legacy 6 on your computer at the same time, if
you install them in separate directories.

But, if you had Legacy 5 Deluxe you don't automatically get deluxe when you
download the new version. You can purchase an upgrade for a cheaper price than
buying it "new". See the links on the right at http://legacyfamilytree.com/
for purchasing Deluxe, and upgrading to Deluxe.

An update for Legacy 5 was announced in the past few days, and this may be
what you downloaded.

  Hope this helps. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Standard Usage?

2006-12-15 Thread WILLIAM HATHAWAY

Tracy,

Ron is correct. In general, this is not the way names are entered in
Legacy. The
AKA is a good and proper way to enter married names. The info is there -
but I personally

do not want to make extra mouse clicks to see it.

In short: In the "Individual's Information", I enter in the "Given" box
(first line in the form)
Jane (Mrs. John Doe) - or sometimes: Jane (2nd Mrs. John Doe) if she is
Johnny's second wife. Then her natal/maiden name goes into the "Surname"
box (second line in the form.)
My use of "1st, 2nd spouse" in the Given box helps me especially when I am
descended from only one of his/her marriage(s.) The "Preferred Line" tracks
this, but I want to see it in my printed reports.(This is one case where
I do use the "Ignore checking of illegal characters" in the Potential
Problems report - and I make sure that there are no other true illegal uses
in such an entry.)

I do not know if this non-general use I have chosen will give me difficulty
later in printing book type narratives or such, where Legacy probably
accounts for marriage names, but it suits my needs now.I would only
suggest experimenting with it under a separately named "Family File" - make
a copy of your main File to a different name - play with it and see if you
like the results before converting or entering all pairings in this manner.

HOWEVER, I chose my method for two other reasons. It started when I
entered

the second person in my database - my mother. The name by which she would
be identified in her birth certificate, her college diploma, to history and
to standard
genealogy format would indeed be her natal Surname. So I put her
natal/maiden
surname in the "Surname" box (second line in the Individual's Information)
as is standard.
But I never knew her as FirstName ("Given" box - first line in the
Individual's

Information) MaidenName. Everyone who knows her knows her name as
FirstName LastName = my father's family name. When she taught school,
she was "Mrs. Hathaway."(I don't think I'm giving out any additional
private data
here - you have all seen my last name in my email, so this is a
one-brainer.)
I simply could not bring myself to see or print reports with only a name she
hadn't
used for the majority of her life - virtually all people who knew her before
she took
my father's name at marriage are long dead.Since I paid for the software
and
am using it for my own purposes (records for living family and future
posterity - I am not webbing this info), I can use it anyway I choose.
("The press is free to the guy what owns one.")

Secondly, in general for all the married women in my database, I find it
much
easier to see/read and memorize which woman goes with which man. The
Ancestry
report is more clear to me when I see a husband connected by a line to a
woman
with his Mrs. printed right there (sometimes on a different page, what with
all

the intervening generations placed between.)

So for both these reasons - "that is the name by which everyone knows her"
(and will likely be on headstones, etc.) and for practical utility in
reading reports - I place in the "Given" box, the full identification.
Jane (Mrs. John Doe) Then her natal/maiden name goes into the "Surname"
box. As I add a father, the Surname is already filled in. Neat.

(Oy - when I filled in my cousin line from John and Priscilla (Mullins)
Alden of the Mayflower to Orson Wells - and he had 4 or 5 wives - one of
whom (Rita Hayworth) also had a handful of husbands, including the son and
father of "The Ahga Khan", I needed some way to see directly in which order
who did what with whom. And no, I've not entered the 49 male direct line
to the founder of the Shiia sect - I'd then need to include Rita's Jewish
ancestry. I barely have time to type this note. I'd hate to do a
Hollywood genealogy - they coupled like Rock Stars. I've got enough to
handle with the 900,000,000 plus stars in our astronomy catalog. BTW, her
husband, although his father was the 47th Ahga, made sure his son was
skipped for the title, which went directly to the grandson - as the guy was
a notorious, adulterous playboy and inappropriate for being the titular
spiritual head of a huge following of a religious community - religion
seeming to have an annoying tendency to tell the sheeple when, where, how
and in what manner to breed - go figure...)

As a detail, I have not (yet) run into any formal wife/wife pairings in my
database. Although I myself came extremely close to winning a wife who
this year instead married a woman. Alas, although her identical twin
sister would have liked to have married them (perform the ceremony as she is
a Minister), she was unable to as the couple had to travel to Canada to get
married as she was only licensed in the Land of the Free. To add an
additional riff, I'm sure everyone has heard/read the bleating of "Marriage
Consists of One Man and One Wo
