Me, too. I have the LUG set for Plain text only even though I disagree with
the policy. So, if my email had an ad in it, it was because I was replying
to some previous message. It wouldn't have originated with me.

Thanks for the help, but everything the article recommended, I already had
set. So, I wouldn't know why the attachment was still sent unless I replied
to an HTML message or something and didn't think to make sure it went Plain
text. But, either way, I have LUG set for Plain Text only and have for

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources in Family Tree

2007-07-10 Thread Bob Brehm

To set default Surety level, click Options from Main Menu, then
choose Choose Customize, then Sources tab, then under Source Surety,
the default is probably set to 3. You can change it anything from 4
(convincing evidence) to 0 (Have not decided yet). 3 is Almost certain
conclusion. A safer for unverified sources choice might be 2 (Probable
conclusion).

When entering source data detail, you will see Surety Level directly
below the data box. It will already be set to the default value for
you, which you can change. Notice the box to the right also.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Ron,
I came to the same conclusion. I've spent the better part of a day reading
and re-reading the help files, the Tips and Troubleshooting pages in the
Legacy web pages and searching the LUG archives until I'm pretty well blind
and sick of the whole thing. Didn't find anything of any value to solve my
problem.
I found several items in the archives where items were being exported in
GEDCOM files that should not have been included, but those little problems
were fixed.
Guess I'll download a copy of the Res Privata program suggested by Gary
Templeman and see if it'll solve my problem. More "outsourcing"!

Anyhow, thanks for the confirmation.

Sorry it has taken me a couple of days to get round to it but I have now
checked your work having tested pretty well all the Gedcom formats with
sources attached and can confirm that in all the cases I tested a source
was added to the name "Living" on all the Gedcoms I tested.

In some cases this could be unfortunate as they had the names of living
individuals as the source.

Ron - you should be in bed by now but just to let you know.
I have exported my data base to GEDCOM using 5.5 only standard and also a
GEDCOM prepared "for Legacy", and those folks who are renamed to "Living"
and details are suppressed, still have sources attached.
Seems to me that a few years back, there was a problem with sources being
included on GEDCOM exports where the individuals were "private" or had
details suppressed.
I can't say about my web pages because I withheld sources from being
published on my web.

Hi Ron,
I didn't do anything tricky - I just exported my entire data base to a
GEDCOM file specifying to produce file for Pedigree Resource File with
ANSI Character set. I check the box to "Suppress details for living
People and also the box to "Change name to "Living". No other options
were selected on the GEDCOM Export page.
Then after producing the GEDCOM, I imported it back into LEGACY for
viewing, where I noticed that sources were still attached to those people
with suppressed details and named "Living".

I may give it a try using GEDCOM 5.5 only standard.

There seems to be something very wrong there aince marking as "Living"

that is how I do my web pages with no problems. I cannot suggest what as

I just created a new family file to place on Pedigree Resource File,
suppressing details and changing the name of those not deceased to
Living - 7,032 of them are now named Living. That should drive someone
up a tree!
Not acceptable and the worse part is... you guessed it -
about 75% of the Livings had sources attached to them. Some of the
sources Very revealing as to who AKA Living really is.

FamilySearch has some good solid info - but the ANCESTRAL FILE withing
Family Search (and also the Pedigree Resource File in it) is just submitted
trees from other researchers. The quality will vary greatly depending on
who did the research, and everything needs to be taken with a very big grain
of salt on those 2 parts of it. I would use it as a starting place.

The IGI part of it is either stuff submitted by people, or basically an
index of some original source records. You can find out which it was for

There are also indexes to a Canadian census, a US census, and a UK census.

btw - the Legacy Deluxe (not sure if in standard) has a fantastic search for
the IGI which I find wonderful for looking for people in it!

find how to get from Research Guidance directly to her screen.

How do I navigate smoothly from info obtained thru Research Guidance so that
I can enter the data quickly into data file?

  Thanks for your help!

Jim,

Sorry it has taken me a couple of days to get round to it but I have now
checked your work having tested pretty well all the Gedcom formats with
sources attached and can confirm that in all the cases I tested a source was
added to the name "Living" on all the Gedcoms I tested.

Jim,

There seems to be something very wrong there aince marking as "Living"
and supressing the details should ensure that no sources are attached -
that is how I do my web pages with no problems. I cannot suggest what as
you have given no details.

Well, here I am talking to myself - so sad.

Enough to make a grown man cry :(

Re: [LegacyUG] New Version of Legacy

2007-07-10 Thread Syble Glasscock
I bought Vs. 5 first then when vs. 6 came out, I bought it, but in my opinion,
there was very little difference. I actually imported one of my family files
back into FTM recently just because of the charts, and reports, I think Legacy
could do a much better job on this. I loved the Events feature in Legacy and
the way Events prints on reports and the option of tagging a particular event
if you want to exclude it. There are several other areas that I would like to
see options in, but I want to know what's in the new one before I buy it.

I like Legacy also much better than FTM that I use only for trees. (From
this list I see many other user do also). So far I use Legacy version 4 that is
adequate for my requirements at this time. The reports, books etc. are
wonderful. However, I want desperately to get the NEW LEGACY when it come out
if it will include REAL BOX trees as let us say MAC's Reunion or even FTM. Now
then, within Legacy, if I go to reports there is a Descendants chart complete
with pictures, if I want them, and a lot of other facts that I can include. It
looks like a waterfall chart.(Would be better in if I could color it)
Now then, again, is it possible to turn this chart around and make a " Top
Down Descendants Box Chart "? By no means am I a programmer, but if other
genealogy programs, not nearly as great as Legacy, can include all manner of
box carts, why not Legacy? ( I am not very fond of Charting Companion)

RE: It is possible to send in plain text in MSN formerly [LegacyUG] Forms Menu

2007-07-10 Thread Sherry/Support
Ann,

Those aren't our instructions - the link is to a Rootsweb site.

Before we switched servers some time ago, the LUG list deleted messages that
were in HTML. Any messages sent in HTML would have never made it to the
list. Unfortunately, our new program that we switched to doesn't have this
capability.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Thinking you might find this of interest.

This is what the Legacy Help has about MSN & HTML messages in the link you
sent me.

MSN Explorer Tech support states "that MSN Explorer and MSN.com send
web-based HTML e-mail ONLY and cannot be configured to send plain text." If
you use MSN as your e-mail service (i.e., [EMAIL PROTECTED]) you can go to
Hotmail.com and send e-mail from there in plain text via the PASSPORT
system.

It is possible to send plain text without using Hotmail, etc. I asked MSN
support to help me here is what they walked me through. Help &
Settings>Writing e-mail settings>Font. One sees drop down lists for font,
size, etc.

Perhaps the Legacy folks would be interested in updating the instructions in

the above link that it is not necessary to use Hotmail.

I have been using Legacy since before February 1999 and never ever, ever,
would I knowing send messages to LUG in HTML. I appreciate you and the LUG
members who let me know I was doing so.

RE: [LegacyUG] ERROR: 339

2007-07-10 Thread ronald ferguson

Valerie,

Please see http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/helpDLL-OCXerrors.asp

However, basically I am afraid you need to uninstall and reinstall from the
Legacy site and not by using the updates. This should not affect your data
files but if it does worry you, then copy C:\Legacy\Data to My Documents
before going through the procedure and you can then copy it back in the
unlikely event of you hitting a problem.

Hello everyone.

I am back again with another problem.

When I tired to print a descendency chart I got ERROR 339: a file is
missing or invalid and then the picture of the printer just kept sending
pages non stop.

The only way I could get out was to turn off the computer.

The previous day I had tried to update my program but it got aborted
before it finished. I tried to update again and I was told there were no
more updates.

What do I do now please ?

Regards from Valerie in sunny Sydney.

Ann,

In msn.com clikc New>Tools in the drop down box youw will see "set rtf OFF"
(or something like that) click it and click OK in the pop-up. This sets
*all* you msn emails to plain text.
