2007-10-28 Thread Valerie Garton
Thanks for your reply Kathy.

No they were not from a recent import and I have no idea how this
problem occurred.

I did try to merge the two Patrick's but you can not merge two people
with the same RIN.

Valerie:
Have you imported these folks recently? It appears as though they
somehow got duplicated during a recent import. The solution is to do
a merge and merge them all togetherthen your linkages should be
correct. You can verify this by looking on family view and seeing
how many spouses each one has...if more than what they should have
then you know you have"ghost" marriages that a merge should take care
ofHOWEVER...you need to be very careful when doing merges that
you don't accidentally merge people that should not be merged(if you
have a lot of unknowns in your file you'll need to very carefully
examine surrounding families to determine if they are actually
duplicates.) Legacy has an automerge feature that works really
nicely...but always make a backup of your file before you try merging
these folks. The good news is that if you just unlinked them they are
probably still in your file. Try running Tree finder( on the top
menu, click on view and then look for Tree Finder.Click on that
and see how many "trees" show up...I'm betting that you may have a
bunch of themThe kicker is that Tree Finder does not
automatically refresh itselfYou'll need to click on Refresh after
you do your merges.

The last email got away from me without my permission so here I am
again.

Firstly thanks for the " big breath ".

Yes I agree with you that the information is probably still there, just
not where I want it to be.

Firstly I need to get 15 and 883's children back where they should be.

I now have 15 & 883 with no children and also 15 & 883 with 3 children
nos 1365, 292 & 1364

[LegacyUG] Step children

2007-10-28 Thread Marg Hope
Hi All,
I have a cousin that had
(1) A daughter out of wedlock. The daughter was not raised by her mother but
was reunited when she was in her 40's
(2) A son to another man and stated on his birth certificate that she was
married to the father. Certificate not found)
(3) 12 months later married another another man and had 3 children.

Her second child (son) was raised with the other 3 children and he did not
find out that his "father" was his step father until after his mother's
death.
He has since found his natural father who has been married twice and had 2
children to each marriage.
My problem is that I want to be able to view the the mother (my cousin) and
her 5 children in the family view page.
Can someone please tell me how to do this?

Thank you in advance,

We would have to have at least one common biological parent which we don't to
be 1/2's.

Valerie - it is hard to help if you can't tell me what the worse mess
is.

You had the 2 people entered into legacy only once - but you had the
marriage set up twice. The instructions I gave should get rid of one
marriage, and they should be all good.

I'm sorry - but it is hard to help if I don't know what the situation is

Are what you are calling your step brothers and sisters the children of a
spouse from an earlier marriage? If so all you need to do is attach them to
the correct parents and they won't show as 1/2s (they won't show as step

The only thing that I would add to this, especially if you
have not done it before, is to FIRST make a backup copy of your
database. Then, if things do not work out as you expected, you can
recover easily.

At 05:44 PM 10/27/2007, you wrote:

Valerie - if both Patrick's have the same RIN, and both Elizabeth's

You probably have 2 marriage records for them. What you need to do
is get them on the family screen, with the marriage that you don't
want to keep, and then unlink them. To unlink them - (once again,
have them on the family screen with the marriage you do not want to
keep) and then select the Edit Menu, and choose Unlink. Select
Husband, and then select from Elizabeth Beddy.

That will remove the duplicate marriage.

Hope that made sense!

had three children. So the seven of us children were "step" but because later
my father adopted her children and she adopted us we would like to be included
in one another's family trees. They should be on my father's and we should be
on their mothers. Does this make any sense to you? I know it's very confusing
but we aren't 1/2 we are step and would like it shown that way on "trees".
Thanks for any help you can provide for me on this situation. Marilea Reinke

RE: [LegacyUG] Step children

2007-10-28 Thread glove
I have a similar situation where my 2nd great granduncle adopted three
children of his second wife's first marriage. I've recorded each child under
the birth parents AND have them showing under my 2nd great granduncle as
adopted (using the child status under children's settings). They only appear
once in the file but correctly show under biological parents and adoptive
parents. Each child has two sets of parents when you look at the parents
icon in family view.

Marliea,

I am not at all sure that I agree with your definition of 1/2 siblings in so
far as it is based on having a common biological parent. Particularly, I would
suggest, in view of the adoptions you would be 1/2 by adoption at least.

If you attach them to the correct parents as biological ( or leave blank) and

[LegacyUG] Using the Event Clipboard

2007-10-28 Thread Graham Porter
Hi All

I'm new to this group so please forgive me if I'm covering old ground.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to assign an event to a number of tagged
individuals in one go. I want to record a census as an event in the lives of a
number of members of the same family. Having entered the details and source
citation and having copied to the event clipboard I can then add an event to
each individual and paste from the clipboard, but can I do the whole family in
one hit?

As far as I know, this is not possible (but I would love to be contradicted!)
However, once the people are tagged and the event is on the clipboard,
you can work up a fair turn of speed with practice

[LegacyUG] When to say thank you [was Died unmarried]

2007-10-28 Thread Susan Daily
Hi Valerie,
Ron is correct, the etiquette guidelines ask you not to send your
thank yous to the list. You can always send your thank yous off list,
as it is nice to know that you've helped a person.

If, however, you've asked a question, and people are offering
different solutions to create a work-around, many times others of us
who are reading about it are interested to know which one worked. In
that case, you can do a group thank you, and then say which method
worked best for you, and that your problem has been solved. I think
that is useful information for the list.

RE: [LegacyUG] Report Contents [was Step children]

2007-10-28 Thread ronald ferguson

Marilea,

Those questions do not indicate that you are "Green"! In fact they are not
straight forward at all: I will try to answer one at a time.

Marriage photos: These will not print. A work around is to create an Event
called eg. "Marriage Photos" and attach the photo which you wish to print to it.

An Obit: This is similar; again create an Obituary Event.

An Individual: The selected one from the Individual's Picture Gallery (Click
the picture icon in Family View) will print.

Marriage Status: This will print.

To enable the above to be printed it is necessary to go to Report Options on
the report and check the appropriate boxes.

The above relates to Book Reports and not all options may be available for
Charts.

Re: [LegacyUG] RE: both Patrick's have the same RIN, and both Elizabeth's have the same RIN [ was Oh dear am I in a mess ]

2007-10-28 Thread jean van horn
So now you need to look to see if the children are still linked to wife 15
or husband 833 or 1358 ... who is 1358? and where did he/she come from? Is
there a marriage to an unknown and all these children linked to that
marriage?

If not then you just need to find the kids and link them to the couple again
and that should bring their decendants along with them.

If the children are linked to one of the parents with an unknown other
parent, you tell legacy that unknown is actually known and say it is the
correct other parent and then you can merge those two parents. That merge
should bring in the decendants.

This mess may take awhile to iron out, so take it slow and steady is my
advice. And as someone said, keep saving your database before you do things.

Thank you for getting back to me. I saw my problem, threw up my hands in
horror and went out.

I will now try and explain what I now have.

Ni 1.

Patrick 579 m to Elizabeth 580
Patrick 579 m Elizabeth 580
Children
Children
311
311
159
159
15
15
581
581
6 m 2
6 m 2
316
316
51
51
Then Elizabeth 580
Then Elizabeth 580
Children
Children
1358 m 883 with children 1365 292 1364 m 294 [then 3 generations of
children] 1358 m 883 with children as before
302 403 295 404 405
6 m 2
6 m 2
51
51
20
20
And it goes on further fro 2 1/2 pages
and it goes on further

I unlinked the marriage of the right hand side

Now I have

Patrick 579 m Elizabeth 580
Children
311
159
15 m 883 no children
581
6 m 2
316
51

I now have no children for 15 m 883 nor childen of 20 another 2 1/2
pages

I realize it is a matter of linkg people and I had to link 883 to his
wife 15 but I do not have any of the children and I have lsot the link
from 20 to all of his descendants.

I don't know whether you can make sense of this but I did not know how
else to explain it to you.

Here's hoping and thanks for your time.

Valerie - it is hard to help if you can't tell me what the worse mess
is.

You had the 2 people entered into legacy only once - but you had the
marriage set up twice. The instructions I gave should get rid of one
marriage, and they should be all good.

I'm sorry - but it is hard to help if I don't know what the situation is
now.

I put the cemetery name and address in Burial Address, instead of notes. That
way I can go to the Master Address list and show a list of all people in one
cemetery.

I have the burial locations in the burial notes. I have a lot of people buried
at one Cemetery. Is there anyway I can print all the people with their burial
notes at that cemetery? Or is there a better place to put the burial location?

The only thing that I would add to this, especially if you
have not done it before, is to FIRST make a backup copy of your
database. Then, if things do not work out as you expected, you can
recover easily.

And, and, and, you MUST MAKE backups of ALL your important

If you do a Search > Query by example tab: Look for whom - Individual,
Where to look - Notes:Burial, Contains - [cemetery you want to find] >
Create List button

You should get a list of the people you've added that cemetery to
their burial notes, you can then print the list or used advanced
tagging with an unused number if you want to keep them separate for
awhile. Its easy enough to untag them again when you want to use that
tag again for something different.

Re: [LegacyUG] Step children

2007-10-28 Thread Cathy
The Family View 1/2 kids options doesn't intend to show just half
siblings. The 1/2 here means that one of the parents showing is a
parent of the child. Repeat - it does not mean that they are a half
sibling of the full children. So this includes Step relationships.

The Family View with 1/2 kids showing is for your convenience to be
able to see all the children of the PARENTS at once - not as an
accurate description of relationships between the children.

Note step-children from a previous relationship of one of the parents
showing in family view are not included when you choose to View 1/2
kids. This is because neither of the parents showing are their parent.

The Family Group Sheets and the Book Reports etc will attach the kids
to the right marriages provided they are linked to the right parents.

Re: [LegacyUG] Step children

I have an great uncle who married and adopted 2 children.
I have marked in the children settings that they are adopted to his mother
and father and child status.
My great uncle then seperated from his wife and lived in a defacto
relationship with another woman when the children were very young.
In the family view with his first wife it does not show that these two boys
were adopted and neither does it show in the reports.
In the family view with his second wife it shows 1/2.
How can I show in my reports that these two boys were adopted.
I do not know their birth parents.

Re: [LegacyUG] Step children

2007-10-28 Thread Cathy

To show the children are adopted on the Family View
Options > Customise - View Tab
Middle left of screen
Show Status on Family View
Check the boxes.
This shows the Child Status rather than the Parent/Child Relationship

To show on Reports
Report Options
Include Tab
Check Child Status (and you may also want to check Child-Parent relationship)
Note that these can be included in Book Reports and on Family Group
Sheets but unfortunately not on Descendant and Ancestor charts.

Cecil ...
on the events I have created it is
Edward ..
What have I not done, or what am I doing
wrong?

Re: [LegacyUG] Step children

2007-10-28 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
Can I get it to show Child-Parent relationships on this screen (either
"instead of" or "along with" the Child Status)?

Thanks,
Bob

To show the children are adopted on the Family View
Options > Customise - View Tab
Middle left of screen
Show Status on Family View
Check the boxes.
This shows the Child Status rather than the Parent/Child Relationship

To show on Reports
Report Options
Include Tab
Check Child Status (and you may also want to check Child-Parent
relationship)
Note that these can be included in Book Reports and on Family Group Sheets
but unfortunately not on Descendant and Ancestor charts.

I have an great uncle who married and adopted 2 children.
I have marked in the children settings that they are adopted to his mother
and father and child status.
My great uncle then seperated from his wife and lived in a defacto
relationship with another woman when the children were very young.
In the family view with his first wife it does not show that these two
boys were adopted and neither does it show in the reports.

In the family view with his second wife it shows 1/2.
How can I show in my reports that these two boys were adopted.
I do not know their birth parents.
TIA
