Re: [LegacyUG] One last question about place names
I can't imagine it ever being correct. England is a more or less defined piece of land. It didn't expand as the British Empire grew. Similarly Great Britain, although more difficult to define, hasn't ever even included Ireland as I understand it. Just because India was ruled by the British, would you list places there as being in England or Great Britain? Cathy At 02:17 PM 23/11/2007, you wrote: That would depend on the time frame. Re: [LegacyUG] Surnames in all caps?
Hello everyone Please forgive my intrusion on this BUT en I was a little whipper snipper we were taught to enter a persons Christian (First & Middle) names as a Cap for first (1st) letter as a Capital balance of those names in LOWER case, the Surname (last) name/names was then to be entered completely as CAPITALS. Also a little old lady once told me if you see a name written that way can do you have a very good idea of what the persons surname (last) is, and that way if you record your information in the same format you are taking away to a high degree the chance of information being misinterpreted. Try the Ancestor Book Report which is probably much closer to what you are doing with webpages. The Pedigree Report is a chart with just basic data. Whatever you do, don't tell the programmers I told you. ;-) First, go to the corresponding Legacy report (yes, I said report) and check the "Addr for birth, chr, death, bur., marr." there. [LegacyUG] Nickneames [was:Surname formatting part II]
Hi Barbara You're looking for the "Quoted Name" feature. Instead of entering May Elizabeth (Mayme) Scruggs (To convert: Use Search and Replace on the Given Names to change ( to " and then ) to ") Enter given names May Elizabeth "Mayme" The advantage of this entry style over adding it to the AKAs is that Legacy can pick up the Quoted Name in Narrative. In the Report Options, on the Format Tab, you'll find options three options for how names appear in reports. 1) remove Quoted name - so that when the whole name is given you get May Elizabeth Scruggs 2) use quoted name in narrative so that it will read May Elizabeth Scruggs was born on Mayme married ... 3) use full given names in narrative so that it will read May Elizabeth Scruggs was born on May Elizabeth married ... Obviously you only choose one of 2 or 3. In Event Sentences and Report Titles, where you choose to use [FirstName] or [FirstHeShe] if you check Use quoted name in narrative, these codes pick up the Quoted Name. Re: [LegacyUG] Surname formatting part II
I can find the alternate names, but I don't have a clue about the proper format for nicknames in Legacy :-). I know I don't like the Alternate Name wording when applied to nicknames i.e. "Another name for Jacob was Wildcat." I tried adding a nickname event so I could control the words but that prints under "Noted events in his life were:" which seems a little stiff for a nickname. As I recall, I had problems with the way FTM handled nicknames also. I wish the programmers would just provide a real nickname slot. I have a lot more nicknames than I do true alternate names. Barbara, I have the same problem coming from FTM. Try searching for Individual, Alt. Surname, Not Equal to, and leave "What to look for" blank. That seemed to work for me. Re: [LegacyUG] Surnames in all caps?
<> I started on a different program which stored each name the way you typed it in. It also displayed surnames in caps, no matter which way they were typed, but I did not realized that at first. I merrily typed the surname in all caps, then had occasion to type the same name as a middle name (or a given name). It came out all caps, so I 'corrected' it (I thought). Next time I got that name as a surname, it was lower case with leading caps. What Happened I finally realized that each name was stored only once, and if it was not in mixed case either the given name or the surname would display wrong. Once I typed them all in mixed case, and let the computer do the capitalizing, there was no problem. Legacy does not have the same display rules of the other program, but another program could cause similar problems. --http://oscox.org Pioneer histories and descendants of Jonathan Upham Cox. Re: [LegacyUG] Surnames in all caps?
One other thing about surnames in all-caps I know for a fact, that a different genealogy program a few years ago stored all names in one list. (I don't think that program does anymore, so I'm not saying which one.) That list included place names (a city, or a state, or a country, etc) first names, middle names, last names. It was only stored in the computer once, and how you typed it last was how it stored it. So. If you had a person whose last name is Washington, and didn't know not to put it in all-caps (like their manual warned you not to) you would enter it in as WASHINGTON. Ok, then you later on had someone from Washington state, so you entered that as Washington. Ok. much later, you went to the person with the name of Washington, and it wasn't in all-caps strange so you change it back. Then later you are printing a report, and all the washington states are now in all-caps. Confused a lot of people even though the manuals, help, and everything clearly said to put it in mixed case, and it would display on non-entry screens and reports in all-caps (unless you turned that off.)Same confusion with people that had surnames the same as other's given names. (ie, I knew someone with a surname of Henry) So - what does that have to do with Legacy? Nothing directly - but it might affect someone else that uses a GEDCOM you send them. And btw - not all people like to see surnames in all-caps.I have a Mc surnmae for my maiden name, and HATE it in all-capsAnd I have Mackie's and MacKie's - which are spelled the same except the capitalization, but are pronounced entirely differently. So I don't display anything in all-caps, and instead have the /'s displayed to denote the surnames. So I just think it is incorrect to say "everyone likes" anything. Re: [LegacyUG] Surnames in all caps?
If you type the surnames in all caps, then you won't have the option to have them print written as normal in any reports. However, since everyone likes to see the surnames in all caps there is a box you can check in the preferences that will make it so that when you are working in Legacy you will SEE all caps (But don't type them in that way). If you type them as normal names (but display them as all caps) then when you are printing a report you have the option of having them displayed either way in the written report. I hope I explained that right :) michele - Original Message - From: "Jenny M Benson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Thursday, November 22, 2007 6:44 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Surnames in all caps? Jenny, The primary reason for this is because you would lose the flexibility if you want to switch between ALL CAPS or mixed case. If you type in mixed case, you have the option to display in ALL CAPS. If you type in ALL CAPS, you don't have the option to display in mixed case. Re: [LegacyUG] Surnames in all caps?
Michele, I clicked on Legacy Help and looked up Surnames Case. The first two entries seem to be what you need: Customize - Data Format Letter Case of Given Names and Locations Upon Field Exit Capitalizes each name in the Given name field and each word in the Place fields when you leave these fields. To leave the entry just as you typed it, select the Don't change what I enter button. (The default is Initial Caps.) If you would like Legacy to go through the entire family file, formatting each given name and place name to the Initial Caps setting, make sure the Initial Caps option is selected, and then click Apply. Letter Case of Last Name Upon Field Exit Select the capitalization option you want to have applied to the Last Name when the field is exited. (The default is Initial Caps.) If you would like Legacy to go through the entire family file and format all the last names to the specified setting, click Apply. So you need to go to Options -> Customize -> Data Format Good luck! By the way, you will need to fix and McNames and O'Names etc. Susan Daily On 11/22/07, Michele Lewis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > I am watching the videos again just for fun. Re: [LegacyUG] Using the To-Do list feature as a research log/correspondence log
Hi Michele I use the To Do-List as a research log. For me, anything I have "to do" for particular individuals, or for selected groups, in my Legacy file - is - generally research related. The tabs in a To-Do item are handy the way the are set-up. They give a quick description of what needs to be done, with categories, locations, repositories, etc. The actual Description Tab is where I put more information: Such as who to contact, a copy of correspondence sent and when, questions needing answers, etc. The Results tab is where I keep in a running account of what's been accomplished and when. Occasionally there may be a need to update the description tab with follow-up ideas or start a new to-do if appropriate. Repository information can be linked as well as Sources, etc. Since adding information to To-Do List item is mostly freeform, a lot of information can be tracked in a way to suit your personal needs. Also, the the To-Do's can be tracked as Open or Closed - in other words, as still awaiting results or as completed. When completed they can be simply deleted, or for use as a Research Log, they can be kept for reminders of what has been done. When you experiment with the To-Do List, the uses you can find for it for are amazing. There are places like that in the US, you just don't hear about them. Pat, Do you have Legacy 6 Deluxe? The update feature is a Deluxe feature. If you are using the Standard version you will have to download the way it is suggesting. [LegacyUG] Export to GEDCOM
Hello Listers (and Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it) I have been trying for two hours to export a file to Gedcom to upload to Ancestry and keep getting an error that say it is not a valid gedcom file. I have used the one for 5.5 only and for Ancestry but neither one seems to work. I know it works because I had loaded the same tree a few months ago. It has been deleted on Ancestry and I am ready to upload an updated version. Anyone got any hints for me today? Thanks Myrna Give Legacy as a Gift for 25% Off. Re: [LegacyUG] New Laptop Legacy Help
Hi all The comment I would like to make is that in addition to the thumb drive I make a CD backup once a month. This CD is then taken OFF the property from where the computer is located. The reason I do this is so that in case of a fire or other problem I still have my Legacy information. I have no problem getting a friend or relative to keep the CD until I exchange it for a new one each month. No, Pat! Read what Ron wrote together with this. You can get the program to update itself straight from the "Legacy Home" tab. With the program up and running, simply click on the tab under the menu and toolbar that says "Legacy Home". Then in the "Updates" box, click on the word "Updates". You should now get the "Check For Legacy Update" dialog box. Now, click on the "Check For Update" button. If your version is *not* up to date, you can now start to download those parts of the program that need updating. (I am using Legacy Deluxe 6.0.0.155--28 July 2007 build -- because although I have attempted to download the latest version, and click on download UPDATE I am eventually taken to a Download Legacy 6.0 screen, which has no options to download the update and I certainly do not want to download 6.0 again -- so I keep giving up on downloading the latest update.) At any rate, I just imported a very small .gedcom (consisting of one couple and their ten children -- no spouses of children) into my main database and performed the necessary merges with no problems. I do want to add a source to show that the mother's name and all the children's names were found in the father's will. (I would have done this in the .gedcom, but I didn't have the source, which was very complicated, in the .gedcom -- just in my main database.) So, I thought "Aha, I will import the .gedcom and then use Advanced Tagging and Advanced Sourcing to add the source to the Name field in the children's names. And SO after the import I checked the Name List and removed all tags from the entire database, as I didn't need any old ones. Then from the father's Family View screen I clicked on> Edit Tag Records (the "Advanced Tagging" window opened with the father's name in the box) Tag Make changes on #4 Family (the "Spouse List for" window opened with the father's name in the box) I unchecked all the little boxes as I did not want to include any spouses, etc. There was NO WAY to "save" these choices so I clicked the "X" to close the window. I was now back at the "Advanced Tagging" window. There was NO option saying "Apply," "Proceed," or "Next," etc., so I clicked Family (again, which took me back to the Spouse List AGAIN [with some check marks I DID NOT WANT back in the boxes, so I unchecked them AGAIN] and again clicked X which took me back to the "Advanced Tagging" Window AGAIN so I clicked Close (not seeing anything else to click on, see above). Then to check to see whether the family had somehow gotten tagged, I clicked View Names and, contrary to what I wanted, NONE of that Family had ANY tags on Tag 4 (Tags 1,4, and 9 were shown) -- or anywhere else! Can somebody please tell me what on earth I failed to do this time!!?? (Legacy Help simply says "A family is considered to be the selected individual and his or her spouse(s) and all the children from the spouse(s). To tag (or untag) a family, click the Family... button. The Spouse List for the current individual appears. If this is not the individual you want to add, click the Change button to the right of the name and select the desired person from the Name List. If the individual has more than one spouse, you can select one of them or all of them by clicking the appropriate button on the right side."
