I disagree with that. The majority of charts that I produce are never
printed out and just a visual representation of a particular part of the
tree. I like to save in PDF format in as large a page format as I can
manage then send to someone for them to view.

File maintenance doesn't remove unlinked individuals. If you want to

Re: [LegacyUG] Nephew - don't know who the father is ?

2008-03-05 Thread MagnoliaSouth
Not sure how others would do it, but I'd make an unknown sibling then
add William as a child of that person with a note explaining why I did
it attached to William.

You could just add William as an unlinked person until you find the
link. The only reason I wouldn't do that is that I'd be afraid I'd
loose William in the shuffle.

Finally, be sure to remember that William could be a nephew-in-law as
well. A lot of people call their nephew-in-laws, nephews. I just
thought I'd throw that in there, just in case. :)

Good luck!

Re: [LegacyUG] Adding Illegitimate Children

2008-03-05 Thread MagnoliaSouth
I've had to use this as well. The best way I know of is to create the
marriage and add the child. Once done then select the member of the
family, click Edit > Marriage and check the box near the top left that
says, "This couple did not marry". On reports it will now say "Jill
had a relationship with Jack" instead of something like "Jill married
Jack".

There is no real reason to worry over it being listed as a spouse
within the application, so long as the report gets it right. It's the
print version that needs to eliminate it as a marriage and as long as
you check the box, it will.

Geoff,

Twice now when in the charting program I get *hung up* with this error
menu:

Sizing Options: LegacyCharting.EXE - no disk
There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive E:

Of course there is no disk in the drive. I was not doing anything with
that drive. No matter what I do it is STUCK! I cannot get out of this
without going to task manager and closing the program. When this
happened this time I was changing the 'themes' to see what each looked
like and checking out the other options of the program (trying to learn
it). I don't remember what I was doing the first time the message came
up.

There are only 90 people in this particular DB so I know I am not going
to try it on one of my larger ones.

OK, so I am gonna go back to reading the help section and see if I can
figure this out.

[LegacyUG] Legacy 7 Charting

2008-03-05 Thread leo macdonald

I have had very little experience using any of the charting programs, I
downloaded the free program and tried doing a 9 generation ancestor chart. I
like the ability to add pictures as well as all the other features.
When I printed off a standard ancester chart, I found that the starting person
was placed about half way across the page, I would like to see it placed closer
to the left side of the page. I also noticed that some of the earlier
generations landed on the left edge of a page and as a result part of the block
of information was lost.
Later on I used the drag all individuals of the same generations and the drag
only one individual features to reposition these generations, by doing this I
was able to print off a good chart without losing any information.
I would like to see the program have the ability to make adjustments
automatically to position a generation so that it does not land on the edge of
the page (top or side).

One feature that I have always thought would a good addition is, in a
descendant tree, to be able select to add the parents of a spouse.

Also to be able to add a previous/later marriage of a spouse with the
children from that marriage.

If done through a right click then you could decide just how much extra
information to add on the chart.

I am wondering if in Legacy 7, if it will be possible to incorporate charts

RE: [LegacyUG] Nephew - don't know who the father is ?

2008-03-05 Thread Valerie Garton
Thanks Ron.

The other thought I had after sending the message, isn't it always the
way, was to add another unnamed brother - of course either of all of
these one would have to add a note ?

Valerie,

There are only two possibilities: show him as the son of Andrew with a
note to say he might not be; or enter him as an unlinked individual with
a note to say he is the nephew of "x". I suppose there is a third -
don't enter him at all, though I do one of the first two.

[LegacyUG] charting pre-edition

2008-03-05 Thread JLB

Yet, one more opinion on the new charting program:

Although there is an option to print charts as images, I'm not sure
why. When blown up large enough to be seen the resolution of the text
is too low and consequently blurred. Are the charts only meant to be
printed on multiple pages, taped together and then looked at through a
microscope? I've only experimented so far with the fan and bow tie.

I've read several people so far saying that they like the
Microsoft-look. I am flummoxed once again. As I was when Version 6
changed all its icons to looking like Microsoft. Even more notable for
the fact that the rest of Legacy kept on looking like Legacy. It took
months for my vision to adjust. With unlimited creativity available for
designing graphical interfaces, why would Legacy be imitating Microsoft,
unless there is intent to be the default genealogy program in one their
future operating systems?

[LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-release

2008-03-05 Thread Graham Mason
I was working on a Standard Descendant Chart and noticed the boxes for
my uncle's 3 wives were not in the correct order. When I checked on my
Legacy file I do not have a date of marriage for his 3rd, and last, wife.
The Chart that had been made had her first -- presumably because the
lack of date means she is sorted first.

Can anyone duplicate this?

We are getting closer to the release of Legacy Family Tree version 7. We are
just as anxious as you are for the great new features to come, but we also
want to be sure that we haven't overlooked anything.

One of the biggest new features will be the ability to create large-scale
wall charts, including drop-down descendancies, fan charts, hourglass
charts, and many others. This part of Legacy 7 is nearly complete, and we
are now "officially" inviting you to take it for a free test drive.

Legacy Charting will be included with Legacy 7 Deluxe edition, but until
June 15, 2008, this special pre-release edition is freely available to
everyone.

Key features:

- Creates 18 different types of family charts
- All charts are easily customizable
- Choose the number of generations to be displayed
- Select the contents of each box
- Pick from a variety of color themes, including the popular 4-color coding
system
- Select from a variety of beautiful backgrounds and page borders
- Insert your own pictures and clipart
- Easily email any chart to family members
- Export to .pdf, .bmp, .jpg, .png, .tiff, .psd
- Order a wall chart and have it delivered to your front door
- Includes a thorough help reference system for easy reference

System Requirements:
Windows 98 or higher (including Vista); 20 mb free hard disk space; 256mb
RAM

Pricing:
FREE for the pre-release edition

Not sure how others would do it, but I'd make an unknown sibling then
add William as a child of that person with a note explaining why I did
it attached to William.

You could just add William as an unlinked person until you find the
link. The only reason I wouldn't do that is that I'd be afraid I'd loose
William in the shuffle.

Finally, be sure to remember that William could be a nephew-in-law as
well. A lot of people call their nephew-in-laws, nephews. I just thought
I'd throw that in there, just in case. :)

Good luck!

Re: [LegacyUG] Adding Illegitimate Children

2008-03-05 Thread Joseph

The way I've been doing it is to set them up as married, but when the
marriage page comes up, I set them as "never married." This way it
doesn't list them as a spouse, but as an unmarried relationship with issue.

Joseph

MagnoliaSouth wrote:

I've had to use this as well. The best way I know of is to create the
marriage and add the child. Once done then select the member of the
family, click Edit > Marriage and check the box near the top left that
says, "This couple did not marry". On reports it will now say "Jill
had a relationship with Jack" instead of something like "Jill married
Jack".

There is no real reason to worry over it being listed as a spouse
within the application, so long as the report gets it right. It's the
print version that needs to eliminate it as a marriage and as long as
you check the box, it will.

[LegacyUG] May not be the right place for this, But

2008-03-05 Thread Donald M. Bjuland
I just recently signed on to this group when I downloaded the latest update
to Legacy and also I noticed that the Legacy people are on here from
looking at all the mail that has come in.

Since downloading the update 6.0.0.190 I had trouble on my
computers. Maybe was a bad idea on my part to keep up with the updates but
was doing it anyway. My old computer is running ME and I use Eudora 5.1
for email and the new one has XP on it and has Eudora 7 for email. Both
computers were working fine until after downloading the update and then
Eudora on the old computer will download mail but when I try to pay bills
via on-line banking I discovered I can no longer get into secure sites and
all I get is the message "page not found" from any secure site.

I then went to the newer computer and tried to use it and found that I can
get Eudora to sign on to my server but when I go to download email nothing
happens and so I went to outlook express and I can download the email ok.
Then I tried to go to the on-line banking site and I can get into the site
but the computer will not sign onto the site. Tried to go in to reset Id
and the site does not accept the information it asks for when I type it in.

I know this is wild but it is the only thing in common as I just done the
update yesterday morning on the new computer and the old one was a couple
of days ago. Found the problems later when I want to do the new tasks. By
the way I am on dial up so hard to talk to someone and check the computer
at the same time. DSL is not available to me, told it is 2 blocks from me.

Any suggestions to the assumptions I have made. By the way the new
computer's Legacy program was installed from a new program disk I ordered
that was to come with version 7 when it was released and it would save all
the updates that would have been needed if had used the old software
disk. Ordered out a couple for people that wanted to get something else
besides PAF.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-Release Edition Now Available For Free Download

2008-03-05 Thread Dermot McGlone
Have just had a very quick look at this (15 minutes so far, but going
back for more!), and I must say I like it.

Some things I liked:

1. The general lay-out/look/feel of the screen, i.e., the MS Office 2007 style;
2. The ability, after creating a chart, to change the starting/current
person dynamically, without having to create a new chart each time;
3. Also the ability to change the chart privacy options, chart type,
Etc., Etc., in the same way.

Some things I've noticed may need tweaking/improving:

1. When I ran a Y-DNA Descendants chart, for my grandfather, it
included the adopted sons of my uncle, i.e., my cousins. Perhaps I'm
misunderstanding what this chart should do, but these people obviously
don't share the same DNA as their adoptive father. When this charting
option is built-in to V7, I assume the child-parent status will be
picked up and not include these individuals in a Y-DNA chart.

2. I'd rather that you could zoom in an a particular
individual/marriage/part of the chart, rather than always the
top-left.

As I play with it a bit more, I'm sure I'll come up with further
things in both lists which i could comment on. If any of them haven't
been raised here, I'll bring them to yoru attention.

Thanks, Geoff, for bringing this out, it may keep some of us quiet
while we wait for V7. BTW, your family looks great on the samples,
what beautiful children!

Regards,

Dermot.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-Release Edition Now Available For Free Download

2008-03-05 Thread ronald ferguson

Mary,

The way I have done this is to go to the Home page and adjust the size of the
chart so that I can see all the pages. My objective was to stop splitting a box
or marriage over a page break and by using the options on the bar on the left
it was reasonably easy to move the boxes around to avoid this and optimise the
pages.

I have not found a "Page Set-up" as such but maybe this is what it means.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-Release Edition Now Available For Free Download

2008-03-05 Thread RoadRoy
Geoff,

I attended your presentation in Tucson a few days ago and when you displayed
the descendants chart, the pictures were large with small descriptions
below. When I use the default settings the pictures are on the left side and
the description is on the left.

Your help section says The *Picture Settings* tab is part of the main Ribbon
of Legacy Charting. It only appears when you have a picture selected within
your chart. I cannot get it to appear on the Ribbon. How do I select a
picture within the chart?

Re: [LegacyUG] Unlinked individuals

2008-03-05 Thread Dermot McGlone
Carol,
As Heather says, File Maintenance does not remove unlinked
individuals. To find them again, choose View>Tree Finder... and this
will show each "tree" in your file. Any unlinked individual will show
with a count of 1, i.e., a tree with only one person in it is, by
definition, an unlinked individual.
Hope this helps,
Dermot

Yes, t'was using the descendant chart and yes, it would print

[LegacyUG] Time Lines

2008-03-05 Thread MagnoliaSouth
Perhaps I'm not understanding this whole timelines thing. I cannot
figure out how to include a timeline or timeline event in a report.
The Help file says "To select a timeline for use in a Timeline or
Chronology report, highlight the desired timeline in the list and then
click OK."

I have gone to View > TImelines and selected a timeline and clicked
OK, it then closes the window and does nothing.
I then went to View > Timelines > Edit and selected a date then
clicked OK, then once again it closes the window and does nothing.
I've tried selecting several different kinds of reports after having
both selected a Timeline and clicking OK, but the Timeline still
doesn't show up in the report.
I've searched all over the options in the reports, but I cannot find
anything which mentions the inclusion of a Timeline.
I've gone to an individual to try and add a Timeline event, but again,
I can't find anything there either

Can someone please tell me what this feature is supposed to do, and
how to do it? I understand what a Timeline is, but I cannot figure out
how to include it in a report, or attach either part of a timeline or
a whole timeline entry to an individual.

To explain why I'm trying to do it, I was reading the archives and
came across this post:
http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/msg19753.html

Am I misunderstanding something? Is there another type of Timeline I
should be looking at?

Any help is appreciated,

Cindy

[LegacyUG] Legacy Charting - where to print your charts

2008-03-05 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
For those that have starting using the pre-release edition of Legacy
Charting, you'll notice on the Publish tab that the Order Chart button does
not yet allow you to order a wall chart. We're putting the final touches on
this. We will release this in a free update.

In the mean time, you could generate a .pdf of the chart and have it printed
at Kinkos or other printing places.

One feature that I have always thought would a good addition is, in a
descendant tree, to be able select to add the parents of a spouse.

Also to be able to add a previous/later marriage of a spouse with the
children from that marriage.

If done through a right click then you could decide just how much extra
information to add on the chart.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-Release Edition Now Available For Free Download

2008-03-05 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
G.C.,

Legacy Charting doesn't yet have the ability to lock in a specific page
size, such as 11x17. Legacy Charting provides you with the page size in the
lower right of the screen. I see that when you adjust the sizing of the
chart that you can get it to size at 11x17 or 17x11. So it should work as
you desire.

There's not currently a way to suppress spouses, but we'll add that to the
enhancement request list.

Claire,

Regarding the tiling of background pictures - when you click on the
Background button (on the Appearance tab), try the Stretch to Frame option
in the Display options. This will stretch the image to the entire chart.

Using the Themes button on the Appearance tab you can create/save templates.

We'll try to enhance the zooming, I, too, would like to see what you

I'm sure there will be some more considered reviews along from the "old
hands" on this list, but after having a play with this program I think a big
well done is deserved for the developers.

What I particularly like:
The Office 2007 style. I'm sure there will be those that dislike it
because it's a bit of a change, but having been using Office 2007 for
several months I was very happy to see this style being used, it is, IMHO,
much more intuitive than the 'standard' windows menus lists.

The drag and drop options. It looks like this is very straight
forward to use, especially with the generational and familial group options.
I like how it auto-draws the drop lines, rather than some other programs
where you have to specifically tell them to pick them up, or have to
reposition them by hand.

The selection of charts. I love the father and mother charts. I
didn't see an "all people in db" chart, but I'm not sure what I'd do with it
anyway. Looks like a pretty good selection to me.

Unexpected behaviour/Niggles
The background pictures don't tile as I would expect. When I have a
slim chart up (for instance the father ancestor chart) the background I
chose tiled vertically, but only the centre portion of the picture was
visible. I would have expected the whole picture to be used and then it
would be tiled vertically and horizontally as appropriate

When starting the program new and with a new chart all the previous
settings are kept, including the background picture. I would have expected
them to reset.

Leading on from that, the possibility to set templates would be
really nice - set up different colours + background + info per family, or
per chart.

Items to display box: a select all/deselect all check box would be
nice to quickly change the viewed information settings.

Using the scroll wheel always zooms into the top left corner. I was
hoping there might be a scroll into the selected person on the chart, or
based on the mouse position.

OK, perhaps I'm being greedy, because niggles apart there is a lot that I
like about this software. Thanks Geoff for the chance to get the charting
module ahead of schedule. I'm looking forward to hearing what the other list
members' first impressions are!

Claire

Because it is easier for people to learn to use a program if it has an
interface that is "standard"... ie, one used by other programs. As
Microsoft (rightly or wrongly) has the most people using its programs, it is
a main standard to follow.

I well remember the days when in one program, to get help, you would press
, another program it was , yet another it was , and
another it was (I think), etc etc. Another wide variation on how to
save. etc, etc. It is a lot easier to use programs if most of the
programs use the same keystrokes to do common things - and the same with the
menus and toolbars, and other graphical interfaces.

I for one am glad that Legacy is using a commonly used interface for the
toolbars and menus.

coding

system

I am wondering if in Legacy 7, if it will be possible to incorporate charts

- Easily email any chart to family members
- Export to .pdf, .bmp, .jpg, .png, .tiff, .psd

The one feature I really like but was not on the list.

It appears you can copy/paste text on to the charts like a list of sources.

i.e. like an Elizabeth Shown Mills example?

Or you can copy/paste the chart to a word processor program?

I have not explored this in detail as yet.

Question:

After Legacy 7 is released will it be an available option to add the source
documentation to the chart by selecting that option?

RE: [LegacyUG] charting pre-edition

2008-03-05 Thread Eric W. Galloway
The ability to sit down at a program and use it quickly without a
massive learning curve is a great advantage when you get a new piece of
software. This is why there is are standard GUI Guidelines for windows
development from Microsoft. Although it would be lovely if each new
piece of software could be a new work of art, consistency in behavior
and look and feel is about Productivity (what you can get done). Every
Windows app could also define its own collection of keyboard shortcuts
(Cut =Ctrl+X in windows but why not use Ctrl+Shift+2 in Legacy and
Alt+Shift+R then Enter in Photoshop, etc., etc.) giving each programmer
a chance to creatively express themselves artistically in their choice
of keys too but in the long run this slows down new learners or those
who use more than one piece of software.

The more consistency in the App with other apps users are used to, the
more quickly new adopters get up and going and the more likely they are
to stick with the app and keep using it (and to pay for the Deluxe
edition). The real place Legacy Programmers should be flexing their
creative muscles are in the areas that make Genealogy Software unique
and powerful, Legacy or Genealogy specific features.
