Anne,

Yes. Windows allows one to use Word, Open Office, Wordpad or Notepad or any
other text editor as the default for program for any text file. I have
previously explained in this thread how to set Windows if you wish to go this
route. Alternatively, with Legacy, you can over-ride the Windows default by
putting any of the programs which will read text into the Launch Screen of
OptionsCustomise.

I don't know the proper words for what I learned in a
prior life, so please pardon my word use. I suspect
that e-mail addresses have some kind of length rules,
but URL's can have many extra address parts as they
want, so what you call an e-mail address is a webpage
address. We don't have to KNOW these things until they
don't work. That is why I said you might add it to the
top of the document. I had one I needed to type once
that was over 100 characters. Took 20 minutws with the
mis-keys.

Have you tried copying the string to the first
line of
the report, in the place I might loosely call the
'salutation' of a letter? Any field that has 'no'
volume/size issues. Many fields can have over
100
characters, so it is just needed that you paste
said
string where normal sentences are expected?

 Yes

Legacy installs to C:\Legacy by default.
Legacy use to default to C:\ , Now it defaults to C:\Program Files\Legacyv7

If you want to keep old version(s) of Legacy and have new one just install
 Legacy7 somewhere else like
 c:\legacy7

then if you want to keep you old Database Files for Ver 5.
Copy the old version 5 files

if you are talking .usr files. If you are talking about moving the actual

(usually located in C:\legacy\data into the new Legacy7 Location\data

they will be converted. Keep your data files in different place. v2, v3, v4

If you open database files with new version once converted previous
versions will no longer be able to access them. This is how most programs
 work.

 Correct.

If you didn't want to convert, keep the same version.

Re: [LegacyUG] File ID

2008-06-23 Thread Robert Carneal USA

We have that already. The presentation output is different.

Tell you what, try this:
1. Go to the Assigned Sources For: window
2. Pick a source, write the name down so you want forget. (You probably
will want to come back to it.)

3. Click Edit Detail.
4. File ID is located here, be something is entered. If not, enter
something. (You can change it later.)
5. Be sure that Add this Detail to the Source Citation on Reports is
checked.

6. Click Save.
7. Go back to the Assigned Sources For: and make sure the Show Entire
Source is selected.
8. Go to the Output Tab in the Assigned Sources For: window, and look
at the output.

You should see:
Cit. ID: Test Filename

Test Filename is my temporary File ID for this.

You are entering File ID into the File ID field, but it is being
outputted to sources at the end of the source after Cit. ID: Here is
what mine looks like:

Kathy Carneal DeBoar, CARNEAL-DeBOAR - THE CARNEAL FAMILY of Virginia,
The CARNEAL HISTORY, PRIMARILY WILLIAM CARNEAL, HIS PROGENITORS,
DESDENDANTS AND ALLIED LINES (Indianapolis, Ind. 123 Publishers Road,
1992), In possession of Robert Carneal, Page 57. Cit ID: Test Filename

That Cit. ID: Test Filename is the file ID. This is located at the
end of the citation.

Admittedly, it is presently differently, probably to adhere more
strictly to Elizabeth Shawn Mills' style of formats, but it is still there.

What is the name of the font that is not working? The developers can't
see the problem unless they see this for themselves.

I can duplicate this, but only after changing my font to something that
will force that to occur. The programmers can't accommodate every font
out there. (Not even Word / Excel will accommodate every font
available!) It would be easier to stick with fonts that do work.

Welcome to Legacy!

The sentence formats are predetermined in Legacy, but you can change
them to whatever you want in the deluxe version. I wish I could show you
a screen shot showing how flexible it is, but this group is not supposed
to have graphics.

You can certainly define your own formats so that they do appear the way
you want. I have had Legacy for years, and will not go back to any of
Legacy's competitors. I can change the Education event from the
standard format of:

He was educated at MSU in 1992 in Murray, Ky.

To something less generic, such as:
James attended MSU, and in 1992, he graduated from MSU in Murray, Ky.

The latter sounds better to me. This is a Deluxe Edition feature, but I
don't think you will be unhappy with the deluxe feature.

RE: [LegacyUG] Install Directory was: Online download of Legacy 7 Question:

2008-06-23 Thread John Carter
Up through XP, Windows allows data to be almost anywhere.

Vista prefers having data in \UserName\My Documents\ProgramName and
normally does not allow data in \Program Files\ProgramName.

Using C:\Legacy as the default works in *all* versions of Windows and
makes finding files simpler for most users (simple path with no spaces in
the name).

John

I believe it is installed to the root directory as some programs have
issues writing to files in the C:\ProgramFiles\ directory.

Personally, I have a strong dislike for any program installing to the root
directory but with some you have no choice. How some programs work properly
from the C:\ProgramFiles\ directory and others don't would seem to be an
issue with the people writing the program.

If you look at the Report OptionsEvent Format for Descendant Narrative
Reports and then click on Event Narrative Format you can select to have
all the events in one paragraph as above.

On the first screen when you select Descendant Narrative Report, if you
select the Wording 1 tab you have the option to change the wording of
the sentence Noted events in his life were: (I have changed it to
read Noted events in [Firstname]'s life were:) I guess you could omit

brought up several times (Jun 11-14 by myself; Carol Costa; Claire Spinelli;
Tracy Skegg and Margaret Ullman) and possibly other posts that I'd not
saved.
I have not seen any reply as to how to avoid/correct this *bug*, though it's
possible I've missed a reply with the onslaught of messages on this and the
Beta list...
I realize the ghost info is not transferred to printed reports, but it still
irks me to see it on screen :-). Hopefully now the lists have quieted down a
bit, this issue can/will be addressed.

Perhaps someone can tell me what's going wrong here.

I've created some generic Master Sources for birth certificates held at the
state/provincial level using SourceWriter (different Master Source for each
state). Then from the individual's screens, I've selected the Master Source
and added specific detail. The quirk: When I view the Master Source List,
the Output Screen shows *details* not associated with that particular Master
Source. Theoretically that screen should show only the generic Master
Source with no details at all, but it seems to retain the most recent
details used or entered. Does anyone else see this condition or can anyone
tell me why details appear on my Master Source List screen?

(Reports print with the correctly associated Master Source and details,
regardless of what shows on the Master Source List--except for the
previously reported problem of omitted details if a common Master Source is
used by two different people.)

Re: [LegacyUG] surnames in all caps

2008-06-23 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
On the customize tab, you can select an option to APPLY the settings. In
other words, go to :
Options, customize, Data format, select Initial case and then click the
APPLY button. This will catch 90%+ of the surnames. Then go into:
View, Master lists, Surname and manually fix the rest (MacXx and McXxxx and
names such as that).
This will fix all the names in your file. Then, in the report options you
can opt to have the names printed as keyed, or all surnames in caps, or all
surnames surrounded by //. You can also have them DISPLAYED this way (in
all but the primary edit screen) by using another option on that DATAFORMAT
tab.

So, really, there is no reason to KEY them in all caps. But is there any
HARM to keying them that way? None that I'm aware of. (P.S. - you can turn
off that individual all caps standardization warning I believe).

2008-06-23 Thread Robert57P via Gmail

Personally, for programs that need it, I've created 4 directories:
windata
winprog
wingame
winutil
I then install old style programs in one of the bottom three (i.e.: if
they only support 8.3 filenames, or for whatever reason), and put their data
in the windata folder (instead of My Documents or Documents or Public
Documents, or whatever MS decides to name it to on the next version).

This keeps my root directory somewhat uncluttered - I only add 4 directories
in the root and put stuff under them, rather than having each program with
its own directory directly off of the root.

P.S. - in case you didn't guess, I also have:
dosdata
dosprog
dosgame
dosutil
for REALLY old DOS programs! Yes, I still use some of those OLD programs!
They beauty of them - I just COPY those 4 dos directories to a new PC
and - viola - they work! No installs, no configuration, etc. I sometimes
miss those old DOS days! But then we didn't have copy/paste between
programs back then either (not to mention all the other Windows
bells/whistles).

Up through XP, Windows allows data to be almost anywhere.

Using C:\Legacy as the default works in *all* versions of Windows and

I believe it is installed to the root directory as some programs have
issues writing to files in the C:\ProgramFiles\ directory.

Personally, I have a strong dislike for any program installing to the

issue with the people writing the program.

[LegacyUG] V7 Prompt for Detail

2008-06-23 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
I am using the Basic Source. I have, at present, 3 sources saved on the
clipboard and am toggling back and forth between them. I have Prompt for
Detail ticked to on. As long as I continue to use that source, it prompts
for detail. However, when I load a different source and then come back to
the first one, it no longer prompts for detail. I have to go back into the
source and tick it on again. Not major, but annoying. I did try check/repair
to see if something had gone wrong with one of my sources, but that doesn't
seem to have changed this behavior.

This did not happen in v6. Is anyone else who is using the Basic Source
having this problem?

Hi Kirsten,
You are not the only person this is happing to... This issue has been
brought up several times (Jun 11-14 by myself; Carol Costa; Claire Spinelli;

I just leave it blank. I don't spend time looking in the name list for
people I know nothing about, so having people without a surname isn't an
issue for me. At the beginning of my research, I did put in Mary, wife of

records, it's just easier to look from the side that you know the name. If I
might be looking at wills, where a woman's married name might be mentioned,
I already know which surnames in the region are in my database, and probably
have family group sheets in hand.

Using Unknown, or ??? creates a lot of individuals named Unknown

One idea is to enter ???husb where husb is the husband's surname (as

You could Publish you chart to a jpg, tiff. Open with a graphics

Probably more importantly
The scaling will also apply to maximizing a chart to fully take
advantage of the printed image based on the roll paper being used.

If scaling or resizing is important you might want to submit it via

It would be nice if it was possible to resize these charts so that
they print on a single sheet of paper. This would allow us to look
at them in that format and see if we wish to fiddle with them
further before sending them out for professional printing. I
suppose that one could achieve something similar by resizing all
the components and fonts, but that is impractical. It would be
nice if Legacy Charting permitted an option to fit to page that
is available in many graphic programs.

Presently, one work around might be to publish the chart as a jpg
file which can then be printed using a graphic program's fit to
page option, but it would be nicer if the option to print in that
manner was available from Charting itself.

This will fix all the names in your file. Then, in the report

Because I turned on the standardized prompts in my new Legacy 7, I

You should use mixed case when entering names. (There is an option

That is because I obviously entered my surnames in all caps. (I

I do not have this problem. The died field clearly shows commas, no periods,
and all letters that have a tail show in full. I am using the default font.

This is not a font issue - if it were it would be wrong in all fields.
This

only applies to the 'Died' field hence it must be something that can be
fixed. You can see it on screen with any font - check the position in
relation to he labels.

What is the name of the font that is not working? The developers can't
see the problem unless they see this for themselves.

I can duplicate this, but only after changing my font to something that
will force that to occur. The programmers can't accommodate every font
out there. (Not even Word / Excel will accommodate every font
available!) It would be easier to stick with fonts that do work.

was about 3 months after the first use.

However, this is well off topic!

that e-mail addresses have some kind of length rules,
but URL's can have many extra address parts as they
want, so what you call an e-mail address is a webpage
address. We don't have to KNOW these things until they
don't work. That is why I said you might add it to the

Because I turned on the standardized prompts in my new Legacy 7, I
now get frequent warnings of:

You should use mixed case when entering names. (There is an option
in Customize for showing surnames in all uppercase.)

That is because I obviously entered my surnames in all caps. (I also
have that option selected in the customized options). Is it a problem
that I initially entered my surnames in all caps? Is there a way I
could change them all globally to non caps and let Legacy do the
capitalizing? Should I even want to do that?

Thanks.

RE: [LegacyUG] Dealing with unknown maiden names

2008-06-23 Thread Connie
Hi Jeff,

The way I handle in my files is:

First Name: Joanne

Surname: [--?--][[wife of Joe Brown]] *note privacy brackets

AKA: First Name: Joanne Surname: Brown Prefix: Mrs.

Which prints on reports as: Joanne [--?--]. Another name for Joanne [--?--]
is Mrs. Joanne Brown.

This way she is shown in the name list with others of unknown surnames (with
the explanation of who she is connected to within privacy brackets) and also
with her married name of Mrs. Joanne Brown.

Additionally I will use this method to enter unnamed children (usually found
in pre 1850 US census):
1st Daughter[[of Joe and Sue]] Smith
1st Son[[of Joe and Sue]] Smith
2nd Daughter[[of Joe and Sue]] Smith
Which allows me to track them in later census and rank them in appox. birth
order from later census entries.

Can't say this is the 'right' way to enter names... but it works well for me
:) But will admit it sure is giving the 'Standardization Tip' popup in
Legacy 7 a workout!

Deb,

Just wondered - I was puzzled!

If you delete the Legacy 5 from the Desktop all you are doing is deleting the
Icon, nothing else. This is true of pretty well all programs, as very few will
install to the Desktop. You main find that some programs use the Desktop as
storage for a set-up file from which their program is installed onto your
computer (Open Office is one example) but when the program has been installed
even that can be deleted.

Deb,

I cannot understand why you might wish to go back to version 5. However, You
are correct version 7 does overwrite previous versions if it is installed in
the same folder. Furthermore, if you have run version 7 then an earlier version
will not be able to open your files. If you haven't over written your

[LegacyUG] Source Citation Reports

2008-06-23 Thread Thomas Herson
I have checked the archives and I see nothing about the problem I'm dealing
with.

Source detail is printing fine in the footnote/endmote.

What I am trying to get across is that the source (or citation) detail is
not printing on the Source Citation Report even though the option to include
it has been checked.

What is odd is that I series of citations for the Social Security Death
Index as a major source with the detail appropriate to each individual. The
citations printed correctly on the Source Citation Report, including the
source detail

When I went through the same process using the Application for a Social
Security Account (SS-5) as the Master Source, citing source details for each
person, the source detail does NOT appear in the Source Citation Account.

I then did a test with 2 or 3 more made up sources and the problem repeated
itself.

This has nothing to do with source details not appearing in footnotes or
source details not appearing in subseguent citations.

I'm tryingto explain all of this again because I get the impression that
sometimes helpful people answer what they think the question is rather than
what the question really is.

If the problem I am experiencing has indeed been previously reported as a
bug, where is the evidence of that? Why did Geoff not know about it.

I appreciate all assistance.

I use the suffix of MNU (maiden name unknown). As, Jane Brown MNU.

This allows me to find Jane Brown's (after marriage) records easily, etc.
When I find her maiden name I just change the surname from Brown to Smith and
delete the  MNU.

I usually put information in privacy brackets so the name of a woman
with an unknown maiden name would look like this...Jane[[wife of John
Brown]]. This helps me by reminding me that I still need to find her
maiden name and indicate the relationship to known people while at
the same time allowing just a blank to be printed. It also keeps me
from accidentally merging people and from people asking me silly
questions like...why I don't have parents for that MNU family in my

[LegacyUG] Standardization Tips message not shown

2008-06-23 Thread Jim Ormsbee
My wife unchecked 'Always show Standardization Tips' after modifying an
individual's information because it was annoying her. It was displayed
because of the character '\', which she extensively uses to separate
different spellings of the given name. Now it doesn't show for any problems
for any individual, and we can't turn it back on. We looked at all the
options.

Incidentally, '\' is not shown as a character not usually found in a name.

We are using Legacy 7.0 Deluxe Edition. Any thoughts?

If you go to Control Panel_Add/Remove Programs, is there more than one entry

Deb,

Just wondered - I was puzzled!

If you delete the Legacy 5 from the Desktop all you are doing is deleting
the
Icon, nothing else. This is true of pretty well all programs, as very few
will

install to the Desktop. You main find that some programs use the Desktop as
storage for a set-up file from which their program is installed onto your
computer (Open Office is one example) but when the program has been
installed

even that can be deleted.

Deb,

I cannot understand why you might wish to go back to version 5. However, You
are correct version 7 does overwrite previous versions if it is installed in
the same folder. Furthermore, if you have run version 7 then an earlier
version

will not be able to open your files. If you haven't over written your
back-up you should be able to use FileFile Restore to open in an earlier
version.

Oh, and why is it a
problem?

Using Unknown, or ??? creates a lot of individuals named
Unknown without any hint of who they are connected to.

One idea is to enter ???husb where husb is the husband's surname
(as an identifying reference point in a name list) but I would like
to know how others deal with the problem. One problem with using
???husb is that someone unfamiliar with the system might
mistakenly assume that the maiden name was the same as the husband's
surname. Another possibility might be to use Unknown_married_to_husb
(again

husb stands for the husband's surname) which is long and klutzy and
may not be acceptable format in Legacy or GEDCOMs.

Any thoughts?

If the husband's name is John DOE and the wife is Mary UNKNOWN I
enter her as Mary [[DOE]]. This way I know she is married to DOE but
the last name doesn't show up on any reports.

Re: [LegacyUG] Another SourceWriter Ghost?

2008-06-23 Thread Laurel
I had something similar happen. When I was first playing around with Source
Writer, I attached a picture to a source to see how it showed in a report,
and then after doing this with my own Family file, I opened the Sample
Family file to look at a similar report (to compare my reports to them) and
the report I was looking at under the Sample Family file, had the last
picture I had used with my Family file attached to each source. This was
really strange as I hadn't entered or changed anything with the Sample
Family file.I decided to not use Source Writer after all, so this
hasn't been duplicated for me since that first time.

Perhaps someone can tell me what's going wrong here.

I've created some generic Master Sources for birth certificates held at
the
state/provincial level using SourceWriter (different Master Source for
each
state). Then from the individual's screens, I've selected the Master
Source
and added specific detail. The quirk: When I view the Master Source
List,
the Output Screen shows *details* not associated with that particular
Master

Source. Theoretically that screen should show only the generic Master
Source with no details at all, but it seems to retain the most recent
details used or entered. Does anyone else see this condition or can
anyone

tell me why details appear on my Master Source List screen?

(Reports print with the correctly associated Master Source and details,
regardless of what shows on the Master Source List--except for the
previously reported problem of omitted details if a common Master Source
is

used by two different people.)
