Anne, Yes. Windows allows one to use Word, Open Office, Wordpad or Notepad or any other text editor as the default for program for any text file. I have previously explained in this thread how to set Windows if you wish to go this route. Alternatively, with Legacy, you can over-ride the Windows default by putting any of the programs which will read text into the Launch Screen of OptionsCustomise. Re: [LegacyUG] A small point
What is the name of the font that is not working? The developers can't see the problem unless they see this for themselves. I can duplicate this, but only after changing my font to something that will force that to occur. The programmers can't accommodate every font out there. (Not even Word / Excel will accommodate every font available!) It would be easier to stick with fonts that do work. Robert glove wrote: I've finally figured it out and this must be the same for everyone. The Died field in the family view is misaligned so the data appears lower on the screen than it should. This results in the bottom of the comma being cut off - you can see the same thing with other letters with tails. A minor fix for the programmers! Re: [LegacyUG] Report content
Welcome to Legacy! The sentence formats are predetermined in Legacy, but you can change them to whatever you want in the deluxe version. I wish I could show you a screen shot showing how flexible it is, but this group is not supposed to have graphics. You can certainly define your own formats so that they do appear the way you want. I have had Legacy for years, and will not go back to any of Legacy's competitors. I can change the Education event from the standard format of: He was educated at MSU in 1992 in Murray, Ky. To something less generic, such as: James attended MSU, and in 1992, he graduated from MSU in Murray, Ky. The latter sounds better to me. This is a Deluxe Edition feature, but I don't think you will be unhappy with the deluxe feature. Robert Jane Sarles wrote: Please excuse a lot of questions. Re: [LegacyUG] surnames in all caps
On the customize tab, you can select an option to APPLY the settings. In other words, go to : Options, customize, Data format, select Initial case and then click the APPLY button. This will catch 90%+ of the surnames. Then go into: View, Master lists, Surname and manually fix the rest (MacXx and McXxxx and names such as that). This will fix all the names in your file. Then, in the report options you can opt to have the names printed as keyed, or all surnames in caps, or all surnames surrounded by //. You can also have them DISPLAYED this way (in all but the primary edit screen) by using another option on that DATAFORMAT tab. So, really, there is no reason to KEY them in all caps. But is there any HARM to keying them that way? None that I'm aware of. (P.S. - you can turn off that individual all caps standardization warning I believe). Personally, for programs that need it, I've created 4 directories: windata winprog wingame winutil I then install old style programs in one of the bottom three (i.e.: if they only support 8.3 filenames, or for whatever reason), and put their data in the windata folder (instead of My Documents or Documents or Public Documents, or whatever MS decides to name it to on the next version). This keeps my root directory somewhat uncluttered - I only add 4 directories in the root and put stuff under them, rather than having each program with its own directory directly off of the root. P.S. - in case you didn't guess, I also have: dosdata dosprog dosgame dosutil for REALLY old DOS programs! Yes, I still use some of those OLD programs! They beauty of them - I just COPY those 4 dos directories to a new PC and - viola - they work! No installs, no configuration, etc. I sometimes miss those old DOS days! But then we didn't have copy/paste between programs back then either (not to mention all the other Windows bells/whistles). Re: [LegacyUG] Dealing with unknown maiden names
I just leave it blank. I don't spend time looking in the name list for people I know nothing about, so having people without a surname isn't an issue for me. At the beginning of my research, I did put in Mary, wife of John Smith, but I have stopped doing that. When looking for marriage records, it's just easier to look from the side that you know the name. If I might be looking at wills, where a woman's married name might be mentioned, I already know which surnames in the region are in my database, and probably have family group sheets in hand. Re: [LegacyUG] surnames in all caps
Thanks. As for switching the standardization warning, I had turned it on as a learning tool and to see if it would be useful. There seems to be no way to turn it off only for Surnames in caps and keep the other warnings. Jeff Robert57P via Gmail wrote: On the customize tab, you can select an option to APPLY the settings. Hi Jeff, The way I handle in my files is: First Name: Joanne Surname: [--?--][[wife of Joe Brown]] *note privacy brackets AKA: First Name: Joanne Surname: Brown Prefix: Mrs. Which prints on reports as: Joanne [--?--]. Another name for Joanne [--?--] is Mrs. Joanne Brown. This way she is shown in the name list with others of unknown surnames (with the explanation of who she is connected to within privacy brackets) and also with her married name of Mrs. Joanne Brown. Additionally I will use this method to enter unnamed children (usually found in pre 1850 US census): 1st Daughter[[of Joe and Sue]] Smith 1st Son[[of Joe and Sue]] Smith 2nd Daughter[[of Joe and Sue]] Smith Which allows me to track them in later census and rank them in appox. birth order from later census entries. Can't say this is the 'right' way to enter names... but it works well for me :) But will admit it sure is giving the 'Standardization Tip' popup in Legacy 7 a workout! [LegacyUG] Source Citation Reports
I have checked the archives and I see nothing about the problem I'm dealing with. Source detail is printing fine in the footnote/endmote. What I am trying to get across is that the source (or citation) detail is not printing on the Source Citation Report even though the option to include it has been checked. What is odd is that I series of citations for the Social Security Death Index as a major source with the detail appropriate to each individual. The citations printed correctly on the Source Citation Report, including the source detail When I went through the same process using the Application for a Social Security Account (SS-5) as the Master Source, citing source details for each person, the source detail does NOT appear in the Source Citation Account. I then did a test with 2 or 3 more made up sources and the problem repeated itself. This has nothing to do with source details not appearing in footnotes or source details not appearing in subseguent citations. I'm tryingto explain all of this again because I get the impression that sometimes helpful people answer what they think the question is rather than what the question really is. If the problem I am experiencing has indeed been previously reported as a bug, where is the evidence of that? Why did Geoff not know about it. I appreciate all assistance. I usually put information in privacy brackets so the name of a woman with an unknown maiden name would look like this...Jane[[wife of John Brown]]. This helps me by reminding me that I still need to find her maiden name and indicate the relationship to known people while at the same time allowing just a blank to be printed. Re: [LegacyUG] Another SourceWriter Ghost?
I had something similar happen. When I was first playing around with Source Writer, I attached a picture to a source to see how it showed in a report, and then after doing this with my own Family file, I opened the Sample Family file to look at a similar report (to compare my reports to them) and the report I was looking at under the Sample Family file, had the last picture I had used with my Family file attached to each source. This was really strange as I hadn't entered or changed anything with the Sample Family file.I decided to not use Source Writer after all, so this hasn't been duplicated for me since that first time. - Original Message - From: Kirsten Bowman [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Monday, June 23, 2008 10:15 AM Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Another SourceWriter Ghost? It'll probably get corrected before long, but it's good to know it wasn't something I did wrong. Hi Kirsten, You are not the only person this is happing to... This issue has been brought up several times (Jun 11-14 by myself; Carol Costa; Claire Spinelli; Tracy Skegg and Margaret Ullman) and possibly other posts that I'd not saved. I have not seen any reply as to how to avoid/correct this *bug*, though it's possible I've missed a reply with the onslaught of messages on this and the Beta list... I realize the ghost info is not transferred to printed reports, but it still irks me to see it on screen :-). Hopefully now the lists have quieted down a bit, this issue can/will be addressed. Perhaps someone can tell me what's going wrong here. I've created some generic Master Sources for birth certificates held at the state/provincial level using SourceWriter (different Master Source for each state). Then from the individual's screens, I've selected the Master Source and added specific detail. The quirk: When I view the Master Source List, the Output Screen shows *details* not associated with that particular Master Source. Theoretically that screen should show only the generic Master Source with no details at all, but it seems to retain the most recent details used or entered. Does anyone else see this condition or can anyone tell me why details appear on my Master Source List screen? (Reports print with the correctly associated Master Source and details, regardless of what shows on the Master Source List--except for the previously reported problem of omitted details if a common Master Source is used by two different people.)
