[LegacyUG] Source pictures

2008-07-10 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
I'm about to start using source pictures in my file and would like to
know if I should continue transcribing the information from the source
or leave it for the source picture to display?

I can't seem to use the Picture Gallery to add a source picture, I
seem to have to add the picture to each source. I noticed that the
source picture wasn't sticking when I used the source writer and
source picture for different people. It's very time consuming to have
to add details to the picture each time you add it to a different
individual. Is there a short cut that I'm missing?

Cheers
Tracy

RE: [LegacyUG] 7.0.0.53 Plagued by Bugs

2008-07-10 Thread Belinda
Thought I might experiment to see if I have a similar bug as I've
occasionally used the conversion to RTF. I generally use the Descendant
Narrative and have never had any problems in the past - it has always been
formatted correctly.

However today it is all weird and wacky. Most of the formatting is correct
except for the paragraph to do with the marriage of a couple. This reverts
to the size of a citation number, and instead of a number an actual citation
is included (e.g. ibid...blah blah blah)Any further information is included
in the smaller size text. This does not change no matter what the type of
source citation method is selected e.g. Endnote or Footnotes. Also no matter
what type of citation is selected (and included in the preview) these are
not included in the RTF report opened in word.

My conclusion, this has to be a general bug and not isolated to you both
Kirsten and Ruth. Not that this changes anything but hopefully if it is not
an isolated case then it will get fixed sooner rather than later.

Hope this helps.

Belinda

Ruth:

For me in the past, the RTF version of Descendant Book Reports always looked
the same as Legacy's Print Preview. It's only since Legacy7 that they've
gone wacky. I've made no changes to Word, only upgraded and updated Legacy,
so I have to believe it's a Legacy issue.

I'm sorry you're having the same problem, but can only say, Misery loves

Bugs in certain SourceWriter templates make the Descendant Book Report
unusable for me, so I thought to convert the report to an rtf file and
 edit
manually. Then I found that in converting, Descendant Book Reports now
 lose
much of the original formatting, sources appear in a huge blob after each
individual, and the report is just an unholy mess. Much the same thing
 happens with the Narrative format.

Does anyone know of a way to get the Descendant Book Report into a file
 that
retains most of the formatting and can be edited in Word?

As someone else has said it is the printing of this list (ViewNames) that is

Re: [LegacyUG] Filing - Again

2008-07-10 Thread s2f
I'm confused about 'renumbering' the MRIN's. What happens to the old MRIN if I
have already assigned some to sources? i.e., if I renumber MRIN 12345 to 1 what
becomes of 12345 if it is already assigned to a source? Will this 'scramble'
the MRIN system and make it unworkable?

I use tabs that are two sided 00 - 99. I stick them on a clear sheet

bit wider than the sheet protector and I punch 3 holes in it. I than number
it with 100, 200 ... and up 1400, 1500. This way I can use the numbers in
any order that comes up. So I might have MRIN 1225 and than 1259.

You can get the double sided tabs from Smead. Color code labels, Double

I usually put the family group sheet in the first sheet protector with the

I was not subscribed to the list when your question first came onboard.
So, I'll try to answer now, belatedly. Having physical filing capacity
for MRIN's that are not being used, and may never be, takes alot of
unnecessary space and would also be expensive. That's why I recommend
renumbering your MRIN's as you create your filing system. This way you only
have tabs numbered 1, 2, 3 etc and you don't have blank spaces everywhere.
I don't use binders myself, but I'm pretty sure there are numbered tab
dividers that are split many more ways than 5 or 8.
Whether you keep your MRIN-numbered documents and your Master Source
documents in the same folder or separate is a small matter. As long as each
one has a number they'll line up numerically. I keep everything in one
folder because there's no reason not to. I used to keep my mother's and
father's sides separate but that didn't make sense either. It just gave me
one extra place to Browse to when linking documents into Legacy.

I recently renamed all my files using the MRIN system because digitally it
sorted all documents relating to a particular family together. This was an
enormous undertaking, but well worth the effort before I continued further
research. As much as I love Legacy, it does a poor job of printing
  documents
from within the program. This system makes it so much easier to find what
  I
want in my PC documents folder. That being said, I don't actually file the
hard copy by MRIN. I'm much too visual to file them in such an arbitrary
order! I use 4 binders - one for each branch. So that I'm not confined to
tab positions, I make my own dividers using card stock and printable
self-adhesive tabs. Name and MRIN is on the tab. Each binder is organized
  as
a descendant chart - though I only use 6 tab positions - anybody 4th great
and beyond goes in the same position because I just don't have that much
information from that point on. Anyway, the top position is for 4th greats
working down to my parents' generation in the bottom position. This way I
can easily see who is in what generation. If two people are on the same
level with no one above them, they're siblings. If there is an above tab
between them, they're cousins. I also color code the direct line.

Just my way of doing things.

I am intrigued by using the MRIN as the filing mode and using 2-inch

  would like some advice.

For example - for my physical files if I have MRIN 1234, 1410, 1500,
  etc.,
how would you handle the filing need of an MRIN 1450 using folders with a
  5
or an 8 tab cut? Probably inserting the MRIN 1450 with a tabbed divider
would not be in sequence - and unsightly for we 'neatniks'. :-). Would
  one
use 1st place tabbed dividers exclusively?
Also, if using Master sources and also MRIN filing, are these kept in the
same digital file on the PC or separated with the MRIN's in one digital
folder and the Master source in its folder? I'm toying with the idea of
filing all of them in one computer folder without regards to Master Source
(numbered in the 9000+ series) or MRIN numbers.

Just looking for some good ideas before upending my current files.

Legacy is confused between its own use of the word Relationship (which
shows relationships of other people to the person you have set as the
starting person) and your use of the word as a Field Name.

When you are selecting Relationship as a field to view, Legacy is
showing its own version, not your custom Event. You need to rename your
Event, from the Master Event List and then try again. (I don't think you
need go back to version 6 to do this.)

You can! You select Event... from the list it then gives you the list

Thinking about it, it isn't essential to change your Event Name as I

If you renumber a RIN or MRIN to a number that was already in use, the 2
numbers get exchanged.

So if the Jones=Smith MRIN is 12345 and the Brown=Green MRIN is 56789
and you renumber Brown=Green to 12345, Jones=Smith become MRIN 56789.

on the Individual's Information screen, just to the right of the Title Suf. box are three radio
buttons. They are labeled M, F ?. If the person is single you can just select what sex they are
by clicking on the appropriate radio button. If the person is married, you can only change the sex

To swap positions:

1. Choose Swap Husband and Wife from the Edit menu. Legacy asks for confirmation that you want to
swap the two individuals and change their gender.

2. Click OK to make the change.

Sorry if I have caused some confusion. I hadn't looked at both the
on-screen and the RTF version of my Reports before. Now that I have done

There seems to be 2 basic problems with the Sources. One is the RTF
report is not picking up where exactly the same Source has been used for
more than one person or event. So instead of one person's name having
Source numbers 1 and 2 (1=My personal knowledge, 2=Person's BC) and
another person's have Source numbers 1 and 3, the second person has Source
numbers 3 and 3. In other words, the Source My personal knowledge, which
is identical Master and Detail, is repeated each time with a new number.

Taking one person in my Report, in the screen preview she has the Sources
6, 9, 11 9, 11, 12 6, 13 1, 10, 14 15 for Name, Birth, Baptism,
Death, Burial. These are shown correctly in the endnotes. In the PDF
version, the same items are Sourced consecutively from 13 to 24.

Which leads on to the second error, which is that the Source numbers do
not relate to the correct text in the Endnotes. Of those 12 Source, 13 -
24, only 7 are correct.

I know there *were* some problems with Citations in version 7 and I know
some problems have been corrected in the updates already released. I have
lost track of what was reported and what was corrected and what
corrections have not reached us yes. Possibly this is one of the reported
bugs that will be fixed with the next update.

RE: [LegacyUG] Filing - Again

2008-07-10 Thread Claire Spinelli
I renumbered a few. Generally, the MRIN doesn't matter. When I renumbered, I
temporarily renumbered one to a high number, leaving the low number unused.
Then I moved whatever marriage I wanted to that low number. It went slowly!

I'm confused about 'renumbering' the MRIN's. What happens to the old MRIN
if I have already assigned some to sources? i.e., if I renumber MRIN 12345
to 1 what becomes of 12345 if it is already assigned to a source? Will this
'scramble' the MRIN system and make it unworkable?

I use tabs that are two sided 00 - 99. I stick them on a clear sheet

little
bit wider than the sheet protector and I punch 3 holes in it. I than
number
it with 100, 200 ... and up 1400, 1500. This way I can use the numbers in

You can get the double sided tabs from Smead. Color code labels, Double

I usually put the family group sheet in the first sheet protector with the

So, I'll try to answer now, belatedly. Having physical filing
capacity
for MRIN's that are not being used, and may never be, takes alot of
unnecessary space and would also be expensive. That's why I recommend
renumbering your MRIN's as you create your filing system. This way you
only
have tabs numbered 1, 2, 3 etc and you don't have blank spaces
everywhere.
I don't use binders myself, but I'm pretty sure there are numbered tab
dividers that are split many more ways than 5 or 8.
Whether you keep your MRIN-numbered documents and your Master Source
documents in the same folder or separate is a small matter. As long as
each
one has a number they'll line up numerically. I keep everything in one
folder because there's no reason not to. I used to keep my mother's and
father's sides separate but that didn't make sense either. It just gave
me
one extra place to Browse to when linking documents into Legacy.

I recently renamed all my files using the MRIN system because digitally
it
sorted all documents relating to a particular family together. This was
an
enormous undertaking, but well worth the effort before I continued
further
research. As much as I love Legacy, it does a poor job of printing
  documents
from within the program. This system makes it so much easier to find
what
  I
want in my PC documents folder. That being said, I don't actually file
the
hard copy by MRIN. I'm much too visual to file them in such an
arbitrary
order! I use 4 binders - one for each branch. So that I'm not confined
to
tab positions, I make my own dividers using card stock and printable
self-adhesive tabs. Name and MRIN is on the tab. Each binder is
organized
  as
  a descendant chart - though I only use 6 tab positions - anybody 4th
great
and beyond goes in the same position because I just don't have that
much
information from that point on. Anyway, the top position is for 4th
greats
working down to my parents' generation in the bottom position. This way
I
can easily see who is in what generation. If two people are on the same
level with no one above them, they're siblings. If there is an above
tab
between them, they're cousins. I also color code the direct line.

Just my way of doing things.

Has anyone had a Run-time error '9': subscript out of range when previewing a
report from a detailed search. This only happens when using versions of Legacy
above 7.0.0.40. I have tried this from both my desktop and laptop and have the
same results.

Following is my setup;

Legacy 7.0.0.53 (Cust.No. - 71-730-XXX-XX)
Windows XP - SP2 with all updates
AMD Anthlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor 5400+ 2.81GHz
3gb Ram
Office 2003 with all updates

The problem;

1 - Detailed search of individuals with a Tag of 1 = 75 individuals

2 - Click the print button

3 - Customize the report with name of report, individual, and spouse

4 - Click the preview button

5 - Program freezes and I get a Run-time error '9': Subscript out of range
error notice

(BTW, this happens when attempting to print anything from the search results on
desktop or laptop)

Proposed Solution (from the help pages of Legacy Solutions by error number);

1 - Delete from the Legacy folder all files that end with a .dbm .usr
extension.

2 - Did File Maintenance - Check/Repair (File File Maintenance Check/Repair).

3 - Re-installed Legaacy with a freshly downloaded version from server no.1

4 - Tried my file again and had the same problem

5 - Did this procedure 3 seperate times with different family files and had the
same problem

6 - Did a complete uninstall and re-installed Ver.- 7.0.0.40 from the CD and
all worked well

I'm not quite sure if you are editing the Sentence Defnition for a
specific Event for one Individual or if you are editing the Sentence for
everyone from the Mast Event Definition list. Assuming it is the
former, Notes disappear because they are on the Notes tab and you have
just opened the Sentence Override tab which was behind Notes and is now
in front of it. When you click on the Notes tab again, the Override tab
will go behind again.

If you editing Sentences in the Master List you are probably forgetting
to add [Notes] to your re-defined Sentence and that is why they are not
appearing.

If you look at the original Sentence Definitions (Edit Sentence
Definition) you will see that they comprise ordinary text which does not
change (eg ... was enumerated in the) and the fields in which data
changes for each record (eg [Date] or [Desc].)

Supposing the original Sentence began [HeShe] ... and you wanted it to
being with the person's first name instead, you would delete [HeShe],
select [FirstName] from the list below and click on Insert. There are
lots of options to choose from for fields to include in your Sentence.

[LegacyUG] Child relationship to wife's husband

Ron,

I always import a gedcom into a new Legacy file, clean it up, check for
unwanted user ID's, AFN's Living or non-living, location formating,
families

with multiple parents or unknown and unknown parents (which can mess up
ancestor view after merge when you have the individual with valid parents)
and several other things.

And yes, I do make a back-up, named beforeXXXmerge.zip.

But I think linking my wife as the husband of an individual that was in
the

original file and lived centuries ago is a bug.

I have since found MRIN's created with other existing individuals
separated

by centuries where the husband an wife were of the expected sex, so it was
not reported as an error, but the MRIN # was in the block of MRIN's with
the

reported wrong sex for husband or wife.

I have reported this to Sherry, with a screen shot of a split-screen of
the

bad file side-by-side with an older copy of the file.

Art,

You do not say what you were merging, and how. For once I believe that
there

is a golden rule - one should import a Gedcom (if it was a Gedcom) into a
new .fdb file before trying to merge and clean the new file up first. You
may not be aware that you can also read a Gedcom in Notepad or similar
before doing anything with it. I have never known Legacy mis-link

If you still have a back from premerge (Goodness Me a second golden rule

Restore that and start from scratch

See MRIN 18604, RIN 89. Verify/correct the Gender of the Husband.

Among those weirdly linked is my wife, to someone who lived centuries

These are all newly created MRIN's from MRIN 18588 thru MRIN 18652. The

[LegacyUG] V 7 Problems

2008-07-10 Thread Albert Johnson
I have 3-4 problems that I can't seem to get resolved.

I downloaded V7 and installed it.

Because the program was not operating just right I decided to
uninstall/reinstall. Went to all

programs. Clicked on uninstall Legacy and got the message 'unable to open
install.log'.

Legacy was not uninstalled. Then went to add/remove, clicked on remove, got
the same

message 'unable to open install. log' as a result cannot uninstall.
Reinstalling from CD or

   downloading does not work either.

Then I clicked on Chronology tab got error message 91, followed instructions
for correcting

this error. Created new file exported to new file, still got error message
91. Deleted file,

should have deleted old file instead of new file but did not, then went to
charting tab,

clicked, got message 'unable to find charting file, please reinstall Legacy'
but since I can not

reinstall I am not able to use charts. Haven't tried anything else other than
mapping and

have problems there to but they will have to wait.

Am thinking I may have to revert to V6 if I can figure out how to remove V7
but support says

there is no way to uninstall V7 without being able to open the install log.

  Thanks; Al

RE: [LegacyUG] Event Definition

2008-07-10 Thread Cary
Does your edited event info include the Notes? They would show as [Notes]
at the place in the event description where you want them to appear.
However, if there are any Notes, by definition more than date place are
filled.

Below is a sample. Each bracketed item is filled by Legacy from the
appropriate field in the event (except the [He/she] which is filled by
Legacy's knowledge of the person's sex). These insertable fields can be
selected in the order that you want them, with the prepositions you want
(of, on, etc) in the field at the bottom of the screen.

[HeShe] worked as a [Desc] [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes]

RE: [LegacyUG] Source pictures

Me too. Pictures are often small in reports therefore hard to read.
Captions/notes for pictures tend to be harder than source text/comments as
picture info is in a smaller column under each picture rather than across
the whole page

I do both. I put the Source Detail Text and Comments in the Source
Detail box, then I attach the picture to Source Detail Picture (under
Multimedia on the Source Detail screen or by clicking the picture icon
on the bottom right of the Assigned Sources window). If I'm using this
for several people, as in the case of a census record, I then click the
copy button, in the bottom left of the Assigned Sources window and click
the Paste button for the other people involved. I don't add detail to
the picture itself. I don't use the Source Writer either except for the
new Source Detail box which I have no choice about.

RE: [LegacyUG] same-sex marriage in Legacy 7.0

2008-07-10 Thread Eileen
Al,

Under Edit, children settings, you can make your choice of how you are going
to list the child, then you can set the relationship to Father and other, or
Mother. In most cases I believe adopted would be the choice for the
children of a same sex marrige, unless one of the couples had been married
and had a child with another person, which would make the child in the same
sex marriage a step child or again adopted.

To be a DESCENDANT by the dictionary means:An individual descended from
another. Something derived from a prototype or earlier form. Think that
should answer your question about the descendant chart, or in other words,
you can't be someone DECENDANT if you are not linked by BLOOD.

Hope this helps.

Is there anything new in Legacy 7.0 about same-sex marriage and respective

In other words, what´s the best way to go about registering a same-sex

In addition, what´s the best way to create/depict a descendant chart using
Legacy Charting 7.0 in such case?

Sorry if I have caused some confusion. I hadn't looked at both the
on-screen and the RTF version of my Reports before. Now that I have
done so I see that the Sources for the RTF file *are* incorrect.
Everything else is fine - formatting as it should be and Sources where
they should be.

There seems to be 2 basic problems with the Sources. One is the RTF
report is not picking up where exactly the same Source has been used for
more than one person or event. So instead of one person's name having
Source numbers 1 and 2 (1=My personal knowledge, 2=Person's BC) and
another person's have Source numbers 1 and 3, the second person has
Source numbers 3 and 3. In other words, the Source My personal
knowledge, which is identical Master and Detail, is repeated each time
with a new number.

Taking one person in my Report, in the screen preview she has the
Sources 6, 9, 11 9, 11, 12 6, 13 1, 10, 14 15 for Name, Birth,
Baptism, Death, Burial. These are shown correctly in the endnotes. In
the PDF version, the same items are Sourced consecutively from 13 to 24.

Which leads on to the second error, which is that the Source numbers do

The previous question about the possibility of changing the sex of a person
reminded me of another question:

Is there anything new in Legacy 7.0 about same-sex marriage and respective
children?

In other words, what´s the best way to go about registering a same-sex
marriage and respective children in Legacy 7.0?

In addition, what´s the best way to create/depict a descendant chart using
Legacy Charting 7.0 in such case?

Tks.

Ronald,

This may or may not help, but Ancestry.com gives very good source
information along with the records. If you like, you can choose
Printer Friendly from the result window, then print the search
result you're going to use, along with the source information. Having
this in front of you while you work with the various templates may
give you a good idea of which template will produce the best result
for the source you're using.

Maybe so. I don't have my filing system set up to reflect MRINs, but it
seems to me that if you have documents filed under MRIN 12345, and you
change MRIN 12345 so that it is now MRIN 1, your whole filing system is down
the tubes. Frankly, I would think that setting up your filing system to
match some arbitrary computer generated number is a risky business. What if
something happens to your family file, or you change programs?

Oops.. sent too quick.
First, sources are assigned to people marriages (RINS MRINS) not people
to sources.
So, when you renumber MRIN 12345 to MRIN 1 any sources assigned to MRIN
12345 are automatically changed to be assigned to MRIN 1.

I have done this many times with no problems.
Hope this helps.

The source information in Ancestry is what has allowed me to enter sources
pretty much correctly into Legacy 6, and, therefore, the Basic Source
method in Legacy 7. No need for the new Source Templates. Also, it is worth
noting that I became aware of this through the Legacy videos. Geoff also
suggests if you have old sources that you have (perhaps?) not formatted as

Hi all,

No spaces in file names -
I have it now so that it's just work left.
I duplicated the file structure of \Legacy\Pictures and all sub folders and
renamed it \Legacy\Pictures_wo_spaces and all the sub folder under it with
copies of the pictures.
I found a program with a 30 day free trial called FileBoss, downloaded and
installed it and in about 20 minutes had replaced the spaces with underlines
in over 4,000 file names!
Then I got the picture list using the recommended View Scrapbook list of
everybody. Used search and replace in WordPerfect to manipulate that file
into a comma delimited txt file which I imported into Excell and by sorting
by name have a list which shows all files linked to an individual sorted by
individual.
Couple of days work, but it will keep me busy while waiting for the update
that will properly do the merge that has messed up my file every time I
tried it.

That program, FileBoss did a beautiful job and does much much more, but I'm
not into programming enough to justify $49.95. It's worth a look for those
that need it.

legacy will locate them on its own, or do you have to locate each new name
and re-attach it. If the latter is the case and you performed a 4000 batch,
you will have a hugh repair job to correct it. Leo

[LegacyUG] Legacy User group list and could we have 2 lists

2008-07-10 Thread Beth Gay

Dear list members,

While I appreciate all of the information shared on this list; I would
prefer to have 2 lists. Is that possible? When I am really busy I just
cannot keep up. Presently I have over 800 unread messages.
My desire is to have one list that deals specifically with the Legacy
program.
The second list would address such items as how do you enter your
places, how do you enter your sources; how do you print a page from
Ancestry, how do you enter nicknames, how do you enter unknowns, etc.
If this is not possible or the majority are opposed; no problem. I will
just unsubscribe again and rely on the rootsweb list.

Best,
Beth Gay

[LegacyUG] Problem with Legacy Home Page Tab

2008-07-10 Thread Jan Roberts
At the moment I have Legacy Deluxe 7.0.0.45. I have just tried to access
the Legacy Home Page tab in order to download the latest 7.0.0.53 version. I
get the following message and can go no further.

Error displaying Legacy Home page.

Error 13: Type mismatch

Would you like to TRY IT AGAIN?

I can access the Legacy Home Page through the Internet icon, and I know I
can download the update from there - but I'm not certain that everything is
as seamless if I update that way. Could someone enlighten me please? And /
or - does anyone else still with 7.0.0.45 have the same problem accessing
the home page via the Home Page tab?

Cheers,

Jan

Subject: [LegacyUG] Relationships

I have an event I call Relationship where I fill in how the person is
related to me, to my husband, and/or to my son in law. In the
description I put: Great-grandmother to Elsie Scharpf or first
cousin, twice removed, to Robert Smith. In version 6, I set the
burial field on the family screen to Relationship to I could see how
and to whom the person in my database was related. I found this to be
very helpful. Now, in version 7, I tried to do the same thing and it
only comes up with how the person is related to me in the 2nd cousin
twice removed format, the number is not spelled out and the
relationship to me is not shown, second cousin, twice removed to
Elsie Scharpf. How can I tell Legacy to use my event Relationship
for this field instead of its relationship calculator?
Do I have to rename this event before I bring the database over to
7? I have kept a version 6 database.

Jan,

It doesn't matter how you download the update, it's the same from wherever, but
you do not need to download the full program (I'm not clear whether you know
this) the URL is: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp

You might rename it to MyRelationships, or similar, so
the computer isn't confused. And you can change it
ONCE, and at the saving the new name, choose 'change
all'.
Good Luck.

Looked at the link you provided Robert - deleted the contents of Windows /
Temp. as suggested. No change. Ironically the info page also suggests
updating Legacy!! However, I have done that just via the Legacy Homepage
(not from within Legacy) and it still made no difference.
