Have you tried going to Reports > All Reports Books & Others and then
clicking on Source Citation Listing.
You can bring the details up on the Screen and it shows who has what source
etc etc. Up to you what you include in Options etc. You may find it
there...
Other than that I can't think of any other suggestions.

Good luck

[LegacyUG] a problem with a source - let's start again please

2008-07-28 Thread Valerie Garton
Using Version 6 I have a source which appears in the source list at the end
of the Family Group Record report which says:

A number eg 3(National Archives of Ireland) - exactly

So it looks like this:

3. (National Archives of Ireland)

And this is not in my source list, nor are there any blanks, and so I am not
able to find out who else has the same source.

I would like to delete this source but:

a. I do not know who else has the same source

b. As I can not find it I can not delete it

Can I have some new ideas please ?

Regards from Valerie in sunny Sydney.

Using either IE6 or IE7 seems to give same performance to me. I
don't see a slow down.

IE7 and mapping is a cool feature on Rev 7.

Why don't you load IE7, and try it, you can remove it if it
affects you machine and go back to the old IE6 if you have to.
You'll probably have no problems with IE7.

the (National Archives of Ireland) is the publication information. In
that
case, the "source" will be a blank entry at the beginning of your Master

Re: [LegacyUG] Where to enter a street address?

2008-07-28 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
Today I was doing that exactly.
There are 2 methods to use, if you are going to change
EVERY instance of the locaton (example Buckingham
Palace), you can do it in the Master Location List but
if you will be adding a new place/address (I have
added 18 different street addresses in Chicago so far)
you want to do it in the Individual Information
screen, Event screen or other screen (?). Then you
must go in and change the location for the 'other'
people using that address. It does NOT ask do you want
to change or make new in the MLL, but allows in IIS.
Be careful.

Valerie, this looks like you have no title or author for this source,

rather

the (National Archives of Ireland) is the publication information. In
that

case, the "source" will be a blank entry at the beginning of your Master
Sources list. Take a look there and see if you don't find something like
what you're looking for.

[LegacyUG] Reports - Family Picture Tree - Ver 6 Deluxe

2008-07-28 Thread Trippsibs5
I noticed a problem in the Family Picture Tree Report (Books/Other) in that the
tree looks fine for 3 or fewer generations, but when 4 generations are
selected, the tree comes up with some missing and/or some blank boxes in the
4th generation.
I see the same results in the Sample file. I am assuming that parts of the
Pedigree View tab would match a Family Picture Tree Report.
In the Sample File, I chose David Clark Brown, RIN 92 as my Gen #1. All is as
expected until his Gen #4 that has no boxes above John Huffman & Molly Smith -
this is fine as there are no ancestors in the Sample file for them.
His Gen #4 has 4 blank boxes (for 2 sets of parents) above Nathan Brown (RIN
54) and Molly Clark (RIN 53). In the Pedigree View, both Nathan and Molly have
parents listed. I would expect those parents to be the Gen #4 in the Family
Picture Tree in Legacy Deluxe, Ver 6.0.0.190 (latest). I have never used this
report before.
If someone can reproduce this, I'll report as a problem. If I'm missing
something here, please advise.
Regards, Jane Tripp

I think that Legacy is a great GENEALOGY progam and I couldn't live
without it to control vital records for my research.
The Individual's Information window and its event/fact are critical for
understanding the information collected and it points to areas of
future investigation.
I would not placing any of this sort of information under the marriage
events. I try to be consistent and apply repetitive information to all
individuals
associated with the events/fact. If a husband and wife immigrate on the
same ship, is this a marriage event? I would apply it to both individual
events.
Each individual must stand alone for research purposes and consistence.
Focus on the genealogy side first, then reports, chart and vacations.

that person "only" such as his occupation, birth, etc... and anything to do with the
Marriage such as Residences (while married), family trips, etc.. under Marriage Events. This way
no matter what the report, it shows a full history of a person or family without the same
information printing out twice.

When you are intering information that pertains to both spouses should you
enter individually for each spouse or wuld it be better to enter it into the
marriage section. I am thinking of something like vacations or other things
that the family might do.

Re: [LegacyUG] Where to enter a street address?

One has to wonder - How do you map items in the address list?
If the address is in the "Master" location list it is possible to map right
to the house, farm, cemetary or whatever.

Phil,

They're obviously obsessed with the mapping feature and too easily led by
the "experts" who think the program's user manual and the instructions if
provides are superfluous.

Chap,

So do mine. I did use the Individual Reports as being one where I know they
don't print. As I do not produce many reports, for all I know there may be
others - hence the use of it an example rather than the only one (of which I do
not know the accuracy).

My marriage events prints in Descendant reports, Family group sheets & others.
I tipically use a marriage event called:
"Family Picture"

in which I have text about a marriage picture or family group picture.

It all prints just fine.

I think there is an issue with certain named events not printing, but
making new events like family picture, marriage picture, should work
fine. You do have to have the Events & Event Pictures option checked
in reports.

Valerie, this looks like you have no title or author for this source, rather

the (National Archives of Ireland) is the publication information. In that
case, the "source" will be a blank entry at the beginning of your Master
Sources list. Take a look there and see if you don't find something like
what you're looking for.

If you have any one of the "Show Only" items checked, it could explain
why it is NOT showing up in the Master Source List. I assume when you
say "source list" you are referring to the Master Source List. Or are
you talking about the Assigned Sources for: window?

If that is not the problem than I am not comprehending your situation.
You say it is a source but later you say something about a repository.

anything to do with the Marriage such as Residences (while married), family
trips, etc.. under Marriage Events. This way no matter what the report, it
shows a full history of a person or family without the same information
printing out twice.

Re: [LegacyUG] Use of the marriage information

2008-07-28 Thread Bruce Jones
Interesting questions.
My current approach on census is to put the full composition of the
household in the source detail text and use the clipboard to copy the source
to each census event. Then, as long as I specify both events and source to
print, I get just one full copy of the household for any report. I even
have some census events in both individual and marriage (duplication, I
know, but still prints just once in the sources).
I will be watching for any other thoughts on this matter to see if I want to
change my approach.
Just my current way.

On my Pentium III w/512Meg memory and Pentium 4 2.53GHz w/2Gig memory,
Using either IE6 or IE7 seems to give same performance to me. I don't
see a slow down.

IE7 and mapping is a cool feature on Rev 7.

Why don't you load IE7, and try it, you can remove it if it affects
you machine and go back to the old IE6 if you have to. You'll probably
have no problems with IE7.

RE: [LegacyUG] Use of the marriage information

2008-07-28 Thread Laurel Feal

I like "everything" to print so I use Events a lot. When I first started with
Legacy, I entered everything under each Individual - so for example a
Residence, I would enter it under the Husband and then again under the Wife.
This was great for Individual Reports, however, it didn't take too long to
realize it was a lot of repetitious information when running other reports as
the same information would be repeated.

So now I enter "Individually" anything to do with a person that I consider
relating to that person "only" such as his occupation, birth, etc... and
anything to do with the Marriage such as Residences (while married), family
trips, etc.. under Marriage Events. This way no matter what the report, it
shows a full history of a person or family without the same information
printing out twice.

At first I thought the idea of having Marriage Events and entering
things such as holidays etc was a nice idea, and I really see no good
reason for *not* having the option to include them in Individual
Reports. After all, if Mr & Mrs Smith went on holiday together, Mr
Smith went on holiday and why shouldn't that appear on a Report of his
life? More importantly, Divorce could well be considered a "noted event
in their marriage" but should definitely appear in an Individual Report.

Perhaps someone from Legacy would like to comment on the thinking behind
excluding Marriage Events from Individual Reports?

Taking a different point of view, though, where do you draw the line? A
couple going on holiday together could be a Marriage Event and could be
entered as such. But what about a family going on holiday? Is that a
Marriage Event? What if they take the grandchildren? Should that be
entered as a Marriage Event and as an individual Event for the
(grand)children?

Personally, I tend to use Marriage Events only for things which relate
very specifically to the *marriage* rather than generally to the married
couple. So, I consider a second marriage service or Blessing, a
honeymoon, a Divorce to be specifically Marriage Events.

I have a similar "individual entry" vs "group entry" quandary with
Censuses. Up to now, I have created Census Events for each individual
and entered all the relevant details in the Description field, but only
in the Event Notes for the Head of Household (provided the HoH has an

household. I put something like "Other members of the household were
his wife X, their children Y and Z, a Parlourmaid and a Kitchenmaid."
For the wife and children, the Event Notes read "See A" where A is the
Head of Household.

The disadvantage of this system is that I do not get that full overview
of the household in any Reports which do not include the Head of
Household - eg an Individual Report for one of the children. It is for
this reason that I am re-thinking how I enter Census information.

I've plenty of time for a long re-think while I finish updating lots of
my most-used Sources to the new standard and hope to GET IT RIGHT THIS
TIME when I finally get around to tackling Censuses!

RE: [LegacyUG] Use of the marriage information

2008-07-28 Thread ronald ferguson

Michael,

This very much depends on what you wish to do with your files. For example, my
main interst is in publishing on websites. On these I mainly use the Pedigree
and Family Group options and both of these will publish the Marriage Events in
the appropriate pages.

However, If your interest is like to be in printing say, an Individual Report
then the Marriage Events will not print.

I would suggest that you try out various options and have a look at the output
to see what will suit you best.

Richard & Keith:

Oh, got it (didn't have the "Show Map" box checked)e. Cool!

By the way, it works in "Aerial" view which is great because you can
see the structures to know where to click.

Boy, this will be easier than manually changing them.

Now, how to know which dwelling when you aren't familiar with the
area? That's for another day and time to figure out!

Thanks everyone!

Hope this thread helps everyone that is working with exact addresses
and wants to map them and have them show in all reports.
