RE: [LegacyUG] Vista and V 7 and new computer - any helpful comments please ?
Valerie, Like you, recently I have had to make the same decision. I first had a look at what I really needed which was to run OpenOffice.org databases in which I store details from parish registers and a light copy of my genealogy files for reference only. Speed was not terribly important but I needed a reasonable long battery life and I would encourage you to look at this aspect. The operating system was not a high priority. Whilst I can run OOo on Linux, for various reasons I decided not to go this route which left XP and Vista (or a Mac). Because my needs were fairly straight forward I opted for Vista Home Basic as I did not need the bells and whistles of the Home Premium and have not regretted this. So far it has been completely problem free. I cannot comment on the use of Legacy V7 with Vista as I opted for another program with a much lower memory overhead, copying my DB across using a Gedcom. Legacy will, of course, continue to be my program for doing all the work on the DB using my PC, and I will not be updating my DB on the laptop. [LegacyUG] backing up Legacy from the keyboard
To the person who was looking a few days ago for a way to back up Legacy from the keyboard with less than 8 or 10 clicks, there's a program called Qliner Hotkeys at http://www.qliner.com/hotkeys/ that is designed to allow the entire Windows keyboard to be programmed to files, folders, web pages and applications. If some-one knows how to write a script for Legacy backup, it can be assigned to one key. If some-one knows how to write the script please let me know. Zero problems with L7 and Vista. And Vista itself is fine, very stable (unlike a couple years ago when it debuted). And the Vista replacement (it is being referred to as Windows 7) won't be available until at least 2010 and probably much later. Re: V7: Just follow the download/installation directions. [LegacyUG] Marriage Records - Volume Page Number
I want the Volume page number to print out on reports, not just on the source. The only solution I've found is to make a marriage event including the Vol. pg number, I also include the recorded date and officiator when I have it. It looks like it would be so simple to have a space for this when you add the date place of marriage. Adding marriage events just makes the reports longer, and there is plenty of space by the date and place line on the Family Report for other information. I was wondering how others handle this. [LegacyUG] Most used narrative reports
I am curious as to which Legacy narrative/book reports are most used as generated by Legacy or found to be most useable by experienced Legacy users. Do any users print these narratives as created, or are these raw reports usually transferred to a word processor where they are extensively re-edited or even re-written. I ask because many of the legacy created sentences read so awkwardly (no fault of Legacy, a computer generated text can only do so much) that I wonder if it is really useful to take the time to create alternative sentences in Legacy or just send the material to Word where the reports can be re-written in good English. It's easy to think there is plenty of room to add more fields to the existing ones which everyone uses, but where do you draw the line? You would like the Register or Index details, someone else will want the witnesses, someone else will want the cleric's/Registrar's name etc. I think it is perfectly satisfactory that we have a Marriage Notes field for all this additional optional information. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

RE: [LegacyUG] Most used narrative reports
I create ancestor Descendant reports frequently for various cousins, and use the PDF's as is from Legacy (including doing any necessary editing in Legacy) for two reasons. First, the RTF comes out not looking nicely formatted like the PDF, and it's a lot of work to resize pictures for consistency, and reformat all the paragraphs etc. Second, if it is fixed to look nice in Legacy, it will already be nice for the next report. For my dad's cousin (turning 100 this month) I did a Descendants report from her grandfather as a birthday present. This was an as is PDF out of Legacy, printed in color bound. It was MUCH nicer than a chart, more readable, includes events and makes a very nice present. To encourage all the cousins to send info pictures, I sent an Ancestors of present for each kid whose info picture I got, which helped make the book complete and cost me nothing as I e-mailed PDF files and let them do the printing. Preview a few generations of various reports and you'll see. My main use for other reports is for help in research, so the as is PDF is always fine. Re: [LegacyUG] Most used narrative reports
Jeff, I was primarily using the Narrative Book Report but have switched to the Register Book Report for now, due to formatting issues when including photos in my reports. I'm in the process of moving material previously entered into notes into an event I also call notes. If it is a long narrative, for instance, I can break it up to smaller sections of the narrative, so I can add photos and assign sources to each segment, if desired. I like to use a lot of photos in my reports so sending the report to a word processor is not my personal choice. I think you just have to goof around with a couple of generations of a family member, try different things and see how you like the results. Just print to the screen and look it over. If you see something not to your liking, try something different until you achieve the formatting style or look that you want. NO genealogy program I'm aware of is going to produce the report that meets everyone's needs, but with a little trial and error, Legacy handles this better for me than any other program I've used (and I own and have worked with most of them). I have to admit my preference for using a lot of photos is what settled me on Legacy. And my greatest hope is they will beef up this feature some day. In my opinion, photos add so much interest to reports and engages the reader in a way that text alone cannot. To be able to add different sized photos in the reports is my greatest wish for Legacy. To further answer your question, I use very few canned sentences. I have changed almost all of them to [notes][sources] and I write what I want for each event. In my opinion, it's far easier to format my notes once, than to have to redo them each time in a word processor. Some exceptions are the obituary event, where I have it set up to read; He/She was remembered in an obituary on [date], in [place]. Then I place the text of the obituary in the notes section of the obituary event and source it. Most of my family likes to have a printed record of the obituary for those who have passed, so this is how I handle this often used event in my narrative reports. It provides the reader, at a glance, when and where the obituary was published and the obit content. The He/She could be changed to insert the given name, if so desired, to personalize it a bit. This is a good question, Jeff, and I hope other Legacy users will chime in with their suggestions on how they format their family reports. Reading the various suggestions is how we all learn to better utilize Legacy. Mary From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ... [LegacyUG] Use of Correct Given Name in reports
Some of the people I have in my database use their second given name instead of their first given name. I have shown that the second name was the one they used by putting the second name in capitals. However my problem arises when printing out reports is that the first given name is always used. For instance Shawn DAVID Smith shows me that David is the given name he uses but in a register report I get the sentence, Shawn was born Oct 21, 1910. RE: [LegacyUG] Most used narrative reports
Jeff: I agree that in any narrative report (from any genealogy software program) the language is going to be stilted, repetitive, and fairly boring. Professional genealogists and history writers use software for recording facts and then convert those to narratives written from scratch. I do use the Descendant Book Report extensively, but only to exchange data with other researchers. When studying a family group, I use events to build a timeline but don't bother with tweaking the language. RE: [LegacyUG] V7 Sources: Nifty formatting lost in gedcom output
Dave and I met about this yesterday and have some ideas. First of all, one of our great challenges when developing the SourceWriter was to ensure that no information is lost when sharing via GEDCOM. Because the GEDCOM standard does not have specific fields for the specific SourceWriter fields, Legacy has to break apart the nice EE-style citations into the source fields as accepted by GEDCOM, namely title, author, publication, etc. So, while no SourceWriter information is lost, the formatting is not retained when exporting. But...the SourceWriter citations are so nice :) that it'd sure be great if when publishing to the web, such as to TNG, WorldConnect, and other GEDCOM-based publishing cites, that Legacy's SourceWriter citations were preserved. Therefore, we have some ideas about adding a new GEDCOM Export option. When you go to the GEDCOM Export screen, we could add new choice under the Produce File For drop-down list called The Web or GEDCOM-based publishing or something like that. With this option selected, when the GEDCOM is uploaded to the site of choice, the entire citation will read as it is displayed in the Footnote/Endnote Citation of the output preview. Re: [LegacyUG] Most used narrative reports
I haven't learned how to do sentences in Legacy which would probably help the readability of book reports. It's pretty dry and choppy otherwise. In any case, I'm doing somewhat similar to this person in writing my own narratives for publication but using a wiki, and only using charts for additional information. It's a more contemplative way of 'publishing' genealogy as it requires getting to know your people rather than whatever comes from how a database can arrange the facts. The advantage is that it can be added to, subtracted from and rearranged, at any time. Photos are done separately. This idea of editing reports after they've been put out by Legacy sounds like a very long way of going about things, as they would need to be redone every time on every report if I'm understanding that process. Jeff, I use the chronology and ancestor reports quite a lot, with full sourcing. What I generally do, is output the report to pdf, and with the pdf as a reference, go through fixing sentences. It is time-consuming, but I think it is worth it, for quick output of reasonable quality. I don't try to work my way through the whole database - just do it for the reports that I need, as I need them. Having said that, I write my own narratives for publication, and just use charts, reports, etc, as exhibits. I'm sure others do a variety of things. Put the preferred name in double quotes in the individual entry and check the box for Use Quoted in the report options. I don't remember whether you can do this in all reports. I have not tried it in the charts. John Some of the people I have in my database use their second given name instead of their first given name. Re: [LegacyUG] Most used narrative reports
Thank you Kristen. I am coming to the same conclusion. When thinking of future descendents - isn't that why some of us do this? - I cannot imagine them going through Legacy to find information or reading through a Legacy prepared book. Of course printed trees are always crowd favorites and good guides to the generations but I too have decided to use Legacy primarily as a database and write the narratives separately based on the data. The book reports are tantalizing but not really adequate as an end product, though they might supplement some of the hand composed narratives and perhaps provide a more complete list of known facts. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. Jeff Kirsten Bowman wrote: Jeff: I agree that in any narrative report (from any genealogy software program) the language is going to be stilted, repetitive, and fairly boring. Re: [LegacyUG] Most used narrative reports
Jeff, Whenever I email copies of my research to relatives, I send them a Descendant Modified Register Report because it is easy for them to read. About two years ago at a family reunion, I put together a booklet containing a Descendant Modified Register Report, a Pedigree Chart, and a Family Picture Tree. When these three reports are printed and put together into a binder, they make a nice presentation booklet which is easy to read. At the reunion, I also gave out envelopes and asked anyone interested in receiving a CD with all three reports to include $5.00 in the envelope and place their mailing address on the envelope. Then after the reunion, I personalized the reports for each person and mailed the CDs out. The $5 covered the expenses of purchasing the CDs, mailing envelopes and postage. My elder cousin had been working on the family ancestry for a number of years but had never put it all together into a genealogical database program. So, I began to add to the research and entered all of my cousin's data into Legacy, including old family photos.which were scanned and added. And sending out the CD allowed everyone in the family to have access to a personalized copy of the entire book,. To personalize the reports on each CD, the Pedigree Chart and the Family Picture Tree started with someone in their immediate family.. RE: [LegacyUG] Use of Correct Given Name in reports
Marilyn I'm including the relevant bits from the Help screens. In my case it means my name looks like this on the data entry screens: Pamela Margaret Margaret Pegler. From the Help screens: You can enter a familiar name as part of the given names by enclosing it in quotes. For example, Margaret Peggy Ann. This familiar name can then be used in narrative paragraphs when a book report is generated. (See the Use Quoted Names for Narratives topic in the Format tab section of Report Options.) Use Quoted Names for Narratives-If names have been entered within quotation marks, use them in narrative sections. For example, William Bill Martin would use Bill in narrative paragraphs. Removed Quoted Given Names-Exclude quoted given names. William Bill Martin would appear as William Martin. I opt to remove the quoted given names so that my full name appears in headings without the 2nd, middle name in quotes and I underline Margaret (highlight, CTRL+u). It isn't a good idea to write given names in uppercase as it is a general genealogy convention to indicate surnames by the use of uppercase words. To make things absolutely clear, I have also created an event which says that Margaret was named Pamela Margaret at birth but always known as Margaret. (I don't like the way the AKA sentence reads) Hope that helps - play around with different report types and see how various options look -- Kind Regards Margaret Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

RE: [LegacyUG] Portable genealogy
Pati, You do have the option of setting the Pocket Genealogist database to Read Only so you don't accidentally make a change. The 2-way syncing still works though, except there won't be any Legacy database changes on the device since it's marked read only, but any changes you make to your original Legacy database WILL be found and updated to the device. (So you don't have to re-import and sync the entire thing) And you still can enter what we call Field Notes on the device which do sync back to the desktop which can then either be viewed or printed from within Pocket Genealogist on your desktop computer. (or I suppose you could cut and paste them into Legacy) Field Notes can be attached to a person, a family or general. (not linked to anything) You might want to look at our user guide, it has lots of screen prints. http://www.northernhillssoftware.com/documents.htm Kevin -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of aplebary Sent: Friday, August 15, 2008 10:59 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Portable genealogy Thanks Kevin, I guess I will have to look into another device since I prefer Legacy to any other program. Excellent ideas. Thank you. Jeff - Original Message - From: Cathy To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Friday, August 15, 2008 1:36 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Most used narrative reports Jeff, Whenever I email copies of my research to relatives, I send them a Descendant Modified Register Report because it is easy for them to read. I ask because many of the legacy created sentences read so awkwardly (no fault of Legacy, a computer generated text can only do so much) that I wonder if it is really useful to take the time to create alternative sentences in Legacy or just send the material to Word where the reports can be re-written in good English. Janis, If I remember correctly it does but also has the disavantage that you cannot remove it without losing a name. For example not only would George Calvin Gilmore use Calvin when referring to the person eg. Calvin married - no quotes. but would write George Calvin Gilmore born 25 Dec 1881 with quotes. By using George Calvin Calvin Gilmore the only time the name in quotes appears is on your screens, provided that when compiling reports you have it set to remove names in quotes. Elizabeth With the number of indexing errors I have found using the Ancestry census renditions, I do like to note those that I got from that particular source. (Not that other sources don't also have indexing errors - I just find Ancestry particularly egregious - especially in linking the wrong images to people or having names that in the index in no way resemble what is found on the census image.) With items I have found on Ancestry indexes, I do have a separate master source for each census - something like Ancestry 1860 United States Census - with the proper sourcing - and in any details I can also note the error (says indexed as Poploski sted Peacock). My other census results are grouped as 1860 United States Census. Re: [LegacyUG] Master source repository for census
I use either HeritageQuest or Ancestry almost entirely. Sometimes, for one reason or another I occasionally use first one and then the other for the same census (for one reason or another). For example I have a Source List Name: 1850 Census-VA-Washington Co.-Dist 67-Anc and another entry as 1850 Census-VA-Washington Co.-Dist 67-HerQu I note the repository in the publication facts as well as well as on the repository tab. With Ancestry repository items I just copy the report info into the Publication Facts field, e.g.: *Source Citation:* Year: /1850/; Census Place: /District 67, Washington, Virginia/; Roll: /M432_980/; Page: /215/; Image: /430/. *Source Information:* Ancestry.com. /1850 United States Federal Census/ [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2005. Original data: United States of America, Bureau of the Census. /Seventh Census of the United States, 1850/. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1850. M432, 1,009 rolls. For Heritage Quest items, I take the publication info from the page where you click to download the image. The Heritage Quest info is less extensive but includes everything I need to find it again in Heritage Quest -- or from another repository. Pat But in both cases I can usually copy it, which is less time-consuming and more accurate than typing in the info. These are not from an index, they are from the original records at the county courthouse. Re: [LegacyUG] Master source repository for census
If you were told the exact location of the census page, would you bother using an index? The index has nothing to do with your source if you are citing the exact image, not the index. Whether you accessed that image through Ancestry, the FHL, or NARA matters not. Elizabeth researching the descendants of William and Sarah (Patterson) Thompson From: Jackie King [EMAIL PROTECTED] With the number of indexing errors I have found using the Ancestry census renditions, I do like to note those that I got from that particular source. I too am tidying up my sources. I am going with having duplicate master sources - one for each different repository and with an indication in the title which repository that master source references. For example, I am trying to keep digital copies of the census pages I reference. Therefore I am the repository for some of the 1860 United States Federal Census for Henry county, Illinois. Maybe I'm getting carried away with the guidance to be sure and document your repository so someone else can find it when the census are so easily found. Still, census may not be the only source I run into that warrant one master source but with multiple detailed sources that are found in several places. Re: [LegacyUG] Master source repository for census
Elizabeth, Elizabeth Unfortunately, because some of the images are attached to the wrong names on the index - and some have cut off tops, it is sometimes impossible to tell what image you have - and what roll it came from. You aren't certain that the numbers ancestry is giving you are actually the correct ones. Hence, I go the extra mile so that someone can indeed find it if they are using the ancestry index or if the aren't and can't find it - they have a clue as to why. I have been really disappointed with some of the Ancestry census efforts although I know people who have never run into problems with their images. Unfortunately, I seem to have a number of people in a couple of counties that they managed to really mangle and despite several years of a number of people asking for corrections, they remain uncorrected. Re: [LegacyUG] Master source repository for census
Jackie, I have hundreds of images from Ancestry, quite a few from Heritage, and even some paper copies from the FHL and NARA. The images from Ancestry, Heritage and the FHL are duplicates of the NARA films. Sometimes that transfer to digital wasn't as good as we might want, but it's still the NARA film. I agree that a person might need to be creative in actually locating the census image via the Ancestry index. But if you told me I could find a particular family in a specific county state, a specific ED and page, why would I use the Ancestry index to find that family on that census? I don't even care that the census taker spelled the family's name incorrectly - you've told me where to find it! What we are sourcing is the census - images of the original. Making sure to include the repository might make a difference if you were citing a rare book that might be available in only a few libraries. Another researcher could save hours of research time for your having been so kind. That is simply not the case with the US federal census images. Re: [LegacyUG] Master source repository for census
Elizabeth - The problem with a couple of these counties is that I can't tell you with any certainty what ED or what Page they are on - which is why I have chosen to separate out the ancestry censuses. I can tell you in some of these counties that the ED and page number ancestry sources for what they show me is wrong. And when the tops of the pages are missing on some images - it's almost impossible. Hopefully with the new contract between familysearch and ancestry many of those types of mistakes will be eliminated but until they are - I've chosen to pull out the ancestry citations and put them under their own master source. I don't do it for many things - most times you would call me a lumper. One thing I do appreciate about Legacy though is the ability to tailor it for problems we may find within our own genealogies - and also for the ability to source things down to whatever detail we believe we need so the next generation can find things just a bit easier than we did. Re: [LegacyUG] Master source repository for census
I wholeheartedly agree with Jacki about the egregious indexing errors found in Ancestry -having names in the index that in no way resemble what is found on the census image. It especially annoys me that you can only provide an alternative spelling, and note that it is a transcription error, or else you can submit a more serious comment. But you can't get them to change transcription errors that are obvious when you compare the index with the census image. In my census events, I record the dates and corrections I submit to Ancestry. It was my hope that some day Ancestry.com clean up their census databases and remove the transcription errors. The problem is that once Ancestry.com introduces an error into their index, Ancestry subscribers will copy the erroneous data to their family tree, and before you know it there will be four individual family trees using the incorrect information. This is why I keep track of census index errors in Ancestry.com and corrections I submit. And that is why I continue submitting corrections. The problem is not with someone using my database being able to find the original source. The problem is with errors that are propagated on Ancestry.com.
