Re: [LegacyUG] One couple, two divorces

2008-10-18 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
The dates of the four events should show it is not duplicates, and in the first
marriage you are a 1/2 child of them, the second a full child. A quirk of
computers.

RE: [LegacyUG] Children's settings - step, adopted, twin etc

2008-10-18 Thread ronald ferguson

Jan,

Well since I haven't managed to get the child status to show on Family View
(not that I'm bothered as I don't use it) I am not sure that I am a good guide,
but on mine when it is not checked it displays "married" on the bar with the
marriage details on ie. the one between the kids and parents.

Connie,

That is correct. It doesn't really matter for uploading small files onto one's
server, say 2000 providing broadband is used, but otherwise it begins to take
up quite a bit of time.

As a result many of use use comparison programs to sort out which files have
been changed and only upload those. Clearly this would not work if the RINs
were ever to be changed.

They are also used to a greater or lesser extent in other web pages. So far

BTW changing them can also really mess up a website, unless one complete

RE: [LegacyUG] Children's settings - step, adopted, twin etc

2008-10-18 Thread Jan Roberts
I have just had a bit of a play with this - and if you have designated a
Child Status it does indeed show beside the children's names in Family View
(very helpful if you also have 1/2 children showing because it reads - First
Name Middle Name SURNAME [RIN] (Birth year / Death Year) (Child Status - in
my case the user generated terms of Step-son / daughter of xyz) (name of
other natural parent). Just as Linda McCauley said.

However - when I went into Options > Customise > View to check if I had it
set to show status I noticed a check box for Don't show "Married". It was
ticked. But what does it actually do? Unticking it didn't make any
noticeable change to the Family View - but I'm not sure what it is meant to
affect. Does anyone know?

Mark,

If you go to Options>Customise>View there is a check box for showing child
status, however in v7 at least it doesn't seem to do anything, not on my set
up at anyrate. It is not something I have used so I don't know what it
should do and there is nothing to assist in the Help Files.

To test it again I made my daughter adopted and nothing showed, and this is
not because I have columns of kids! Whether other symbols affect the output
I don't know.

I would suggest that perhaps Legacy could give a definative answer?

Ann,

I would make appropriate notations in the Comments section of the Source Detail
and attach both images. I would also to note the volume and page number in the
original record.

Apparently the record was filmed twice. I've noticed that in other LDS
microfilm. Sometimes they filmed pages twice and sometimes they missed pages
completely.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Advice: How to source two different entries for same person
& event in FamilySearch Labs

I have the printout & digital image from FamilySearch Labs. This is a page from
the Oakland County Michigan Marriage Register. The printout in the same
except the grooms age, birth year image number and Reference number.

The first printout has Groom age 24 years; Groom birth year 1849; Image number
15; Reference number v. 1 p34 rn 1650.
The second printout has Groom age 25 years; Groom birth year 1848; Image number
624; reference number v. 2 p34 rn 1650

The first image clearly has the groom's age 24. The second image is exactly the
same as the first one except the right hand sheet overlaps the left hand sheet
making the age appear to be 25. No where on either image does it give a birth
year for the groom. Both entries are on lines 10, 11 & 12. The notations are
the same at the bottom and top of both images.

A family member went to the Oakland County courthouse and looked at the entry.
The grooms age is 24, however they said it was on page 117 of book i. The
images do not have a page number written on them, there is a stamped 34.

There is no explanation on the FamilySearch Labs printouts as to why there are
two entries.

I thought about having one source with notes explaining the two entries and why
I think the age 24 printout is correct, also that FamilySearch Labs offers no
explanation why there are two entries.

I would appreciate ideas on how you would source this type of situation.

Thank you,
Ann

You could create a "Remarried" and a "Redivorced" event. Then if you used a
Marriage and a Divorced event all 4 events would show in chronology and FGS

If you're using Family Tree Maker 2009, click on File, choose and click
onExport from the window that drops down. In the Export window that pops up
you should see a box titled Output Format, select GEDCOM 5.5 to create a
GEDCOM file which then can be imported into Legacy Family Tree.

Hi Joyce

You are right, I did purchase Legacy and meant to say transfer Family to
Legacy, but my problem is that when I go to export it says "save as" and
then when I press the down button I am only given one choice, .ftmb, thank's
for trying.

Hi Laurie,

I'm not sure you understood what Erin said. You do not try to "Save" your
file. Go to "File" on the top Menu bar. Go down to "Export to" Click & the
menu should fly out with 3 choices listed, the first is "GEDCOM File"

If that doesn't work, you need someone from support to help you, 'cause what
I wrote is how it's supposed to work.

Hope this helps:-}

If you're using Family Tree Maker 2009, click on File, choose and click
onExport from the window that drops down. In the Export window that pops up
you should see a box titled Output Format, select GEDCOM 5.5 to create a
GEDCOM file which then can be imported into Legacy Family Tree.

Re: [LegacyUG] entering first-person

2008-10-18 Thread Gene Young

Lavern Hall wrote:

Hello,

I have always heard that it's best to begin entering data with yourself as #1.
I've done this and know it is a practice followed on this list. That
said, I recently
attended a genealogy conference where the speaker was strongly suggesting
that if you have only one child, that child should be entered as #1
and by doing
so, a clear picture of both parent's families would result. Has
anyone tried this?

I brought up the fact that starting with the child will change the
"usual" numbers
seen on a pedigree form, but was countered with "Numbers are not important."

The fact that I have one child is allowing me to consider this option,
but after
entering hundreds of names into Legacy, I'd hate to have to start over and I
won't do it without the expert advice on this list. Does the speaker's
suggestion
have merit? Any thoughts?

Thanks so much,
Lavern Hall

It seems to me that you and the speaker are talking apples and oranges. You start your research
with yourself because that is the person you already know the most about. This provides the most
clues about where to look next. It is just logical and common sense. The numbers mean nothing more
than a way to uniquely identify a person.

The speaker was talking about generating a report that shows a clear picture of the child's
ancestry. Your speaker may have been a good genealogist (though I doubt it) but apparently knows
little of modern genealogy computer programs. (a good genealogist would at least have a passing
knowledge.)

You can start entering your genealogy information with your 5th ggrandfather and as long as all the
information is entered and linked correctly you can generate any report that your program of choice
is capable of producing, clearly showing your child's relationships to his/her ancestors.

I wouldn't worry about that speakers advice and just keep doing what you are doing, especially using
a program as versatile as Legacy.

Connie,

Whilst you are correct is saying that when it concerns written reports the RINs
have no value, that is not true when it comes to web pages. In fact without
them there would be no Pedigree web pages which are based on the RINs.

They are also used to a greater or lesser extent in other web pages. So far
from cluttering up the brain for those, like me. whose main interest is
creating websites they are essential.

BTW changing them can also really mess up a website, unless one complete
replaces all the pages (which can run into 1000s ) on the server.

There is nothing to prevent you from "marrying" them twice. Legacy makes it
easy.
Enter the marriage, then within that show status as Divorced, perhaps also
add an Event for the Divorce. Save. Right Click on husband or wife, select Add
| Husband (or Wife), and do the same again for the re-marriage. Then add the
children.

Re: [LegacyUG] entering first-person

Connie's last statement should put your mind to rest.
"If you decide you do have a use for the RINs, you can always change them
later if you don't like how they are automatically assigned."
So, if you do decide you want your people's RIN in some particular order
(say for filing purposes, not reporting purposes), you can RENUMBER them
anyway you choose, anytime you want to.
Perhaps some other software programs require you to enter people in a
particular order, but Legacy does not.
When you create a pedigree chart, whoever you choose to start with will be
numbered #1. That could be you, your child, or your 3rd great grandmother.
Welcome to Legacy. You will enjoy it.

There is nothing to prevent you from "marrying" them twice. Legacy makes it
easy.
Enter the marriage, then within that show status as Divorced, perhaps also add
an Event for the Divorce. Save. Right Click on husband or wife, select Add |
Husband (or Wife), and do the same again for the re-marriage. Then add the
children.

2008-10-18 Thread Wynthner
Numbers associated with a person aren't important unless those numbers are
serving multiple purposes (like also serving as document numbers, etc.). As to
pedigree numbering, there are several numbering systems in use around the world
so trying to keep them in order is like re-arranging deck chairs on the
Titanic- it may look pretty but is, in the end, a futile attempt at order.

Thanks so much,
Lavern Hall

Re: [LegacyUG] entering first-person

2008-10-18 Thread Connie Sheets
The numbers that are printed by Legacy on a pedigree chart have absolutely
nothing to do with RINs, or who you enter first. (Pedigree charts will always
be appropriately numbered regardless of whose pedigree chart you print).

I completely ignore RINs and MRINs. The only value they have, in my opinion,
is for people who choose to file their paper files by number (I'm an
alphabetical person). And possibly, in some cases, to help distinguish two
people of the same name (though I use other means, like their birth dates or
spouse name, to make that distinction).

Otherwise, they are just something else to clutter the brain, IMO.

It doesn't matter who you enter first; you could start with a 3rd cousin twice
removed. If you decide you do have a use for the RINs, you can always change
them later if you don't like how they are automatically assigned.

Mark, I use Hotmail as well. If you are using the Full Version you will have to
change to the Clasic version first, select either a new message or reply to a

RE: [LegacyUG] entering first-person

2008-10-18 Thread ronald ferguson

Lavern,

If I want an ancestry tree for my grandchildren then I start with them
(actually you can only start with one and the others have to be added in a word
processor). If I wanted the tree for my daughter then I would start with her
etc. The RIN makes absolutely no difference.

Your question seems to imply that you believe that the RIN numbers are somehow
related to the start person, they are not - although some people choose to
ensure that the start person is number 1 (this is a complete waste of time in
my opinion). There is no reason whatsoever why this should be the case. Hence
no changes are need to your file, try just highlighting your child and
compiling an Ancestry Report.

Well it rather depends who's genealogy you are wishing to record and
why, doesn't it?

I think probably most of us here are recording our "family history"
which, in the case of those who have children, means the history of our
children, both their parents and the ancestry or their parents. Most of
us probably hope to pass on our research to our children and/or other
family members after we are gone.

If you are only interested in recording your own family, then don't
bother including your spouse and possibly not your child. If you want
your child to know their inheritance, then include him/her and your
spouse and that side of the family.

As to what shows up on a chart or report - that's entirely up to what
you choose to include. With Legacy you can choose anyone you like to be
the "starting person" and you can choose to display all relationships to
that person. You can still make yourself the "focus" of your family
file, even if you have included your child and spouse and all your
in-law relations.

I agree entirely with your speaker: people are what is important, not
numbers! To paraphrase The Prisoner "I am not a number, I am a free
woman!"

I wonder why the picture would be clearer depending on who you enter first!
The data you enter is the same and as your speaker noted, numbers are not
important, and this must work both ways. I have myself as the first person
and nothing is lost for either of my children. Perhaps the reference was to
a numbering system but since in Legacy this is under your control I don't
see the benefit of changing anything.

I'm using hotmail, and didn't realise it was sending in html. I don't know how

As you say this does show if they are twins but not if they are adopted or step
children.

What I had to do was to go in and create a new category in the child status box
to show the description, in this case "step".

Re: [LegacyUG] Childrens settings - step, adopted, twin etc

2008-10-18 Thread Bruce Jones
Have you indicated that the child is a twin? I had to do some figuring to
see how to do it.
Display the parents in family view. Right click on a parent and select
"View" then "Children List..."
Then highlight the desired child and enter "Twin" "Stillborn", "Adopted"
etc. as appropriate in the "Child Status" box.
Then it shows on my Family View after the childs name and birth/death years.
Hope this helps.

RE: [LegacyUG] Childrens settings - step, adopted, twin etc

2008-10-18 Thread ronald ferguson

Mark,

If you go to Options>Customise>View there is a check box for showing child
status, however in v7 at least it doesn't seem to do anything, not on my set up
at anyrate. It is not something I have used so I don't know what it should do
and there is nothing to assist in the Help Files.

To test it again I made my daughter adopted and nothing showed, and this is not
because I have columns of kids! Whether other symbols affect the output I don't
know.

I would suggest that perhaps Legacy could give a definative answer?

Ron where do I select what colors to show each different child relationship. I
have looked several times.

I have managed to color by sex but I cannot find where it does this by
relationship - twin, adopted etc as you have been able to.

It displays automatically if you have it selected.

Is there any way to display the status of the children in the family view?
