Re: [LegacyUG] Error opening database------could not lock file----flash drive

2009-01-01 Thread jmglover
Hello again everyone,
I'm sorry to have had to take a couple of day's break from this
thread, and I thank you all for your help and patience.

Original query was
snip Error opening database
When I answered 'yes' to the query if I wanted to try again, up came the
words 'could not lock file'.
I've been unable to open the .fdb family file from the flash drive since.

This is the message I get when I try to save the Legacy file to Flash drive
K, which is the one I've been having trouble with since the update of
Legacy.

Error saving Family File as: K:\glover main one 1-01-2009.
Error 67: Too many files
Would you like to TRY IT AGAIN?
There is very little 'used' space in the flash!!

Mike ,
I have checked for multiple copies of Legacy to be running, and
also switched the machine off, restarted it, etc. That doesn't make any
difference.

Gary,
I have looked at the 'read only' box, it's not ticked, 'archives' is
ticked.

I am able to save the Legacy files to another flash drive though. That's
working alright.
So though the problems not solved, I will just copy the files on the K flash
to my hard drive, and then to the other flash I have. So problem solved that
way.

Thank you all for your help,
Happy New Year,
Jill

Should the above read, There is very little un'used' space in the flash!!
and that the flash drive was full!
A right click on the drive in Windows Explorer and click on Properties will
tell. Unless I have missed it, so far I have not seen this mentioned.

I am trying to compare two different databases, using the split screen.
When I move from one screen to the other I keep getting the following
message You cannot copy to/from the same family file.

Why does it say the same family file? It is a different file,
composed yesterday, under a different name, although a lot of the
information is to be found in both files.

As it happens I would like to copy information from one file, which
contains the sources, to the other, which lacks them. Does this mean I
have to tackle another merge? I would like to drag and drop as
suggested by Ron Ferguson some time ago.

Any advice before I give up completely would be welcome.

[LegacyUG] Error opening database------could not lock file----flash drive

2009-01-01 Thread Sheri Harris
Don't know if this applies or not, or even if there is a connection here,
but about a couple of weeks ago I began to have problems with printing,
flash drive errors, and malfunction errors for anything connected to my USB
ports. It started right after a automatic update of Windows XP and since
that was the only thing that had changed on my system, I feel that has been
the problem. My external hard drive is connected via USB and it continued to
work fine, so that eliminated a USB port failure.

Anyway, just thought I would pass this along as updates (Windows,

On Split Screen, the 'working' file is denoted by strong blue top line,
while the inactive file is grayed somewhat. When I click on one file, on
someone's name, then click on a name on the other 'inactive' file, I get
that message. However, if I first click on the top grayed line to make that
the working file, I do not get the message. In any case, once you click OK
to the message, you can then click on the inactive file and do what you were
intending to do anyway. It just takes an extra click sometimes.

RE: [LegacyUG] How to convert Family Tree to Legacy

2009-01-01 Thread Richard and Evita Piepho

Let me put in my 2 cents worth As I advise in my classthere is a way to
gedcom the data in ...but I myself am doing it manually... now I have 18,000
names to move from FTM to Legacy and it will take me a year to finish this move
but it is well worth it because I have in FTM some very large bodies of notes
because of the limitation FTM had and find Legacy gives a better method of
showing timelines on the person. I did gedcom a small portion at first to see
how it worked and found it took me longer to correct the problems than to just
enter manually. It also gives me an opportunity to review my data and
especially on the source data find need to make adjustments to better meet
proper documentation because my earlier data from 10 years ago wasn't up to
par. Mind you also found that the notes data would be divided between the
event field and various note fields in the Legacy formatt and also some of the
note data had to be rewritten to give a better read in published reports. I
work on one group sheet at a time and when I need to add a piece of data within
a group sheet at that time make the connection in Legacy and update in Legacy,
but still if someone wants details on a family group not in Legacy can pull the
report from FTM even tho it has not been moved to Legacy. Richard

I have checked the archives but could not locate the correct answer, if it
has been answered please accept my apologies.
I have always used Legacy and think that it is the best program on the market.
I have a friend who has always used Family Tree Maker, she has just purchased
the Legacy 7 program and would like to know what is the best and easiest,
step by step way to transfer all her data from her Family Tree Maker program
 into Legacy.
I'm sure that there are quite a few x-ftm's out there who have been converted
to Legacy, I'm sure that those of you who have transferred your data base
incorrectly have learned by trial and error.
There must be a way to transfer the data and still keep one's sanity intact.

Re: [LegacyUG] need help getting rid of duplicates

2009-01-01 Thread Brian/Support

LouAnn,

Legacy has some searches that will help you with this problem. What you
are seeing are multiple links between some people either as children of
the same couple or as multiple marriages between the same people.

Go To Search Find Miscellaneous Searches
There you can search for people with multiple spouses and for children
with multiple parents. Use the search for multiple spouses first.

For those who have multiple spouses who are the same person you can fix
the problem from the search list. In the right side select the family
tab. You will see the list of spouses and children as well as their
parents and siblings.
Examine the lists to see if any full families are duplicated. ie. the
spouse and all children are the same.
Select one of the duplicate spouses then click the Spouse list button
below the family list.
Select one of the duplicate spouses and use the UNLINK button. That will
remove that duplicate link.

NOTE:
The children will still be linked to that person and he/she will now
have an unknown spouse so you will have to repeat the unlinking step
to remove the unknown spouse and make a final break with the children.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Home Tab Problem

2009-01-01 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
But that is not how Americans (IMHO) do it. We do the months for the first
year, and become one year old on the 365/366 date, and are called one year old
from that date until the 730/731 day. So the program uses this plan. It might
be a future fix that whichever language/dialect you use, also picks the date
standard used by the majority of that group, but I for one became aware of this
situation when reading letters and books originating in the other areas, that
seemed to be counting ages 'wrong'. This is a cultural thing, and it will be
incorrect for 1/2 the world, even if switched to the other.

Re: [LegacyUG] need help getting rid of duplicates

2009-01-01 Thread Corrigan
Thanks Brian. I will use that to see if I have found all the clones of
people and marriages. I have unlinked all that I could find as I went
through the people.

Why do you think this happens? I have merged databases before and this didn
t happen.

Until it is fixed in an update to Legacy here are a couple of ways to

a. Click on the title bar above each file
b. Click on either the parents or children area of the other pane.

program uses this plan. It might be a future fix that whichever
language/dialect you use, also picks the date standard used by the
majority of that group, but I for one became aware of this situation

seemed to be counting ages 'wrong'. This is a cultural thing, and it

No, Richard, it's not a cultural thing. The program simply has a bug in
it. Words of 1 syllable :-

dob 01 Jan 1974
current date was 31 Dec 2008
reminder claimed age of 35 TODAY.

What you seem to be describing is an artefact of some old gravestones
which mention that a person died in the nth year of their life. That
means they'd had n-1 birthdays.

Ahem! That's not a date that requires double-dating :-)

For England Wales (Scotland doesn't apply), only dates between 01 Jan
and 24 Mar in the years 1751 and previous, need the double year
notation. Sequence is 31 Dec 1700 - 01 Jan 1700/01 - 24 Mar 1700/01

If your birthday was 1 jan 1900 then on 1 jan 1901 you would have entered

one year old until your second birthday on 1 Jan 1902.

No, ... it's not a cultural thing. What you seem to be describing is an

Perhaps a different type of analogy would help to clarify the two different
types of dating being debated here--both of which seem to be used in at
least all cultures that follow our calendar. Let's say I took a job as a
software engineer (snickers allowed g).

--- On Day 1, I could say it was my first day on the job,
even though I had not finished a full day of work.

--- If I'm still there 3 months later, I could say I was in my
first year on the job, even though I had not finished
a full year.

--- If I'm still there 12 months and 1 day later, I could say
- I had been there for 1 year,
or
- I was in my second year on the job.
Both statements would be correct

Age works the same way. Two days ago I had another birthday. I turned 29
(snickers are still allowed ;-). Today I'm 29 years and 2 days, which
I'll call 29 until my next birthday, rather than keeping track of days and
months. But I'm already into my 30th year.

Sheri, if he was a civilian, then this would not represent military service
for him. It would be a job, handled the same way you'd handle any other job.

If this certificate was passed down in the family, then it's cited like a
privately held artifact. (EE 3.24-3.25, Basic Format, Family Artifacts, pp.
138-39; or QuickCheck Model, p. 105). Essentially, you give the basic
who/what/when/where that describes the document, cite the current or
last-known whereabouts of the certificate, and then cite the provenance of
the artifact (the chain of title that would justify trust in its validity).
