Re: [LegacyUG] Apple computers
You don't need windows installed to run DarWine and it will run on either version of OS-X... Intel or PowerPc. However, this setup is not one for the beginner. I am running it just fine on an older G3 iMac running under Darwine... but it took me DAYS to get the setup just right. WINE stands for (Wine Is --NOT-- and Emulator) meaning Windows is not needed at all. However there are some .dll's you will need to acquire from a working windows system to get it 100% right. Re: [LegacyUG] Apple computers
While I use Legacy for my hard core research you can not top iFamily for a mac native family history program. It prints some of the most awesome and unique reports I have ever seen... however it's lacking a bit on the research side (but they are improving it very quickly.) Take a look at http://ifamilyfortiger.com/ for more information. I absolutely love Legacy though... but iFamily brings photos and media together in a way only the mac can do it. I have the best of both worlds. Wendy Howard wrote: Hi Tim, How does Legacy work on Apple computers? A search of the list archives (see the link at the bottom of this and every post) on the word apple (without the quotes) will bring up past discussions about this. Legacy is a Windows-based program, however it has been reported that it will work on an Apple with the resources to emulate or otherwise interact with Windows. Rather than try to reproduce it all here, it's probably better to go to the archives and read the posts from the people with the experience and knowledge you seek. Re: [LegacyUG] Apple computers
On my newer MAC, I peeled the label off of an older PC that I was junking that had a windows XP serial number on it. I then installed that machine's XP on my newer mac using bootcamp I used clear contact paper to re-affix that windows license sticker to my mac. It's still a vailid license and it's no longer being used on the original machine. Much like when I bought a new machine I installed MS Office on the new machine after uninstalling it from the old machine. Thus transferring my license to a new machine. The license reads may only be used on one machine... and since it is, it's in compliance with the license. If you have an old machine that you will junk just recycle the XP license number... if not, I have found older machines with valid licenses for free on Craig's list or freecycle. This way you can run bootcamp on the newer machine and have legacy with minimal cost. Or you can go with WINE, but beware it's not something that someone who doesn't understand higher machine setup should attempt. WINE works, but it's not an easy setup. Darwine does not require windows at all and you can use it under older machines. I'm running it on a G3 imac using panther. http://darwine.sourceforge.net/ Allen Sherry/Support wrote: I would recommend just installing Windows XP rather than Vista and make sure you update to the latest service pack so you can install IE7 for the mapping feature. RE: [LegacyUG] Source Translation between Legacy v7 TNG
All the information gets translated over to TNG one way or another. I can still easily find the source and that is all that matters to me. Other software will not include the complete source… and that I have a problem with. TNG appears to use the Source Name list field, rather than the source title field. I create my gedcoms using 5.5 and the sources are still identified as yours are in my TNG site. I don't think it's anything you're doing or could do differently, unless you want to change over all of your source names in the list. I use it to help me group sources, so I won't change anything in Legacy. Perhaps one day Darrin will change the way TNG reads the sources in Legacy. Mary From: Gail Nestor mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] I have a few questions for those of you using TNG v7 (The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding) to create your website and using Legacy v7 for your database. 1) Have you converted any/all of your sources using Legacy's new sourcewriter? 2) Have you imported a gedcom file to your website? 3) Did your sources appear on your website as you wished them to? An example of one of my census sources shows on my website as follows (see http://www.roots2buds.net/getperson.php?personID=I6256 http://www.roots2buds.net/getperson.php?personID=I6256tree=nestor tree=nestor): Census: Alabama, Marshall - 1850 U.S. Census [Ancestry.com images], Alabama, Marshall County, (http://www.ancestry.com: National Archives and Records Administration, 2005), M432, roll 10, District 23, p. 272, dwelling 123, family 124, David Rich household, accessed 16 Feb 2007, 1 Jul 2008. This is how it appears on the screen in Legacy (and the way I would like it to appear): 1850 U.S. census, Marshall County, Alabama, population schedule, District 23, p. 272, dwelling 123, family 124, David Rich household; digital image, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 16 Feb 2007); citing National Archives and Records Administration microfilm M432, roll 10. It seems that TNG is using the Master Source List Name (Census: Alabama, Marshall - 1850 U.S. Census [Ancestry.com images]) of the source in place of the master source template information from Legacy (1850 U.S. census, Marshall County, Alabama, population schedule). Is this due to the way I am generating my gedcom? I created the gedcom in Legacy v7 using the following options: Export To: GEDCOM File Produce File For: Legacy Keep embedded formatting codes within text: checked Convert formatting codes to HTML style: checked I would very much appreciate help with this issue! How do you get Legacy 7 to pass the lat and long to TNG so that it's mapping will work? You do have to go and manually link your media for best effect... TNG v7's new web 2.0 interface makes that much easier. Can I look at your site? I also will gladly help anyone set up TNG and can arrange hosting if anyone is interested. Allen John B. Lisle wrote: Allen, I have been using Legacy and TNG now for almost 4 years and quite agree. These programs work very well together. In fact, a survey of TNG users done a few months ago showed that more TNG users use Legacy as their principal database (I think it was something like 30%) than any other application, including people who only use TNG. With the introduction of mapping with Legacy 7 and the ability to mass resolve most of your locations with VE (and yes, I know, that they then have to be checked. Yet, getting a large number done with little work is worth it when the rest are no more work than if you did them manually...) allows you to make use of TNG's Mapping facility seamlessly. This is, I believe, a Legacy only feature. Legacy users should definitely consider TNG if they wish to publish on line. john. When I find information that's useful, I use a PDF writer that's free called CutePDF and I will print that website to the PDF printer which saves it as an Adobe PDF file. I can go back to it any time I please even without an internet connection. This does not violate any copyrights unless you print and publish that information... If the publisher's colophon is intact and you know who the original publisher, author, where the book was published, and all other information relevant to the source I would enter it just as you would source the book... then enter the website as the repository. I also would strongly suggest using Adobe PDF (Full version) to create a PDF of the website to store (since they have a habit of going down) or creating a web archive (MHT) file with internet explorer to preserve the website for your use only not to be distributed. I have accessed some wonderful sites in the past that are no more. Also... websites that disappear over time can also be accessed from http://www.archive.org which is also known as the internet way-back machine. To me there's nothing so frustrating when I am grading papers as not being able to find the root source... in this case the book is the root source the website is nothing more than a repository like the library. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy vs TMG and then some
The new version of FTM does -NOT- require the older program to import... you can directly import from any older format however, it is a one way import... any changes in data done via FTM2008 must be exported to GEDCOM in order to re-load into older versions of FTM. Allen From: m absalom Sent: Saturday, May 31, 2008 3:10 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy vs TMG and then some Cathy, Thanks for the comments and I am looking forward to trying V7. For the FTM problem, I have reinstalled it on three drives now always from the original FTM disk. The problem may come from the bug patch (?) that had to be down loaded and I have that on disk also. I have tried all export and import options but nothing effects the fragmentation problem in the slightest. FTM was bought out after V.11 and they refused to address my problem. Their solution is to upgrade to 2008. Someone told me that 2008 required the older programs to export to a GED. If that is the case than the FTM people have their heads in the wrong place and I have heard nothing good about 2008. I could, if I felt bold (don't really) try to make corrections to the code but I really don't know what I am doing and I have a lot of large family files (since FTM doesn't handle well over 15,000 people). I don't want to mess with it right now. As for mapping. My husband is a Linux geek and my son is a programmer. Neither care much about MY research so if I want them to be of any Tech Support, I have to stay clear of anything MS if at all possible and that includes anything IE. My husband in particular keeps pointing me toward the Linux screen. He has even given me programs that run on both OS's to make the transition easier. LOL {Laugh Out Loud} I don't yet understand how Gramps (Linux program written in Python, a programing language) can read my GEDCOM when others can't. Chalk one up for the Linux people. But there is a positive side to this. I can import to Gramps (Windows version) and then export to Legacy with very few, minor, problems to correct. (No more fragmented families!) This is why I am exploring Gramps and Legacy side by side. Thus, it would not be much of a problem to import some of my smaller, less developed projects in to Legacy. I will be trying that latter this summer. Wishing us all happy trails in all our V.7 adventures! There are notes on the Legacy Web pages on what options to choose when exporting the Gedcom and I think there are also notes about the import. I know that you need to check the notes after import. If they have developed strange spaces, then you've used the wrong option for notes and need to import again.Legacy 6 works far better on XP - and a computer with more RAM. Legacy 7 requires much the same although for mapping you need IE7 and I think it would drive you mad without broadband connection. I don't understand people not being interested in maps. :-) To have the relevant map available with a click or two is wonderful. Re: [LegacyUG] Maintain Perspective
Well from my perspective the virtual downloadable product only needs to be set up once and takes absolutely no time and physical work to ship out. It's merely a download. From my perspective it would be best to get the product in their older user's hands first... then the newbies second. Legacy v7 should have been downloadable the -first- day the -first- box shipped. As a paying user for a long time I feel we should have gotten first treatment... not the second banana. I am NOT looking for a new job (I am lucky and have very enjoyable decent paying work), but if there was ever a company I thought I would like to work for, this is it! Sherry... I wish legacy would officially take a look at http://www.winehq.org/ and see how well legacy v5 works under Unix and Mac OSX under wine. It's almost flawless. There are some help issues (based on the new windows XP's Help files) with the v6 but I can get it to work and do all the major functions of the program. I am hoping that v7 will be as functional. Re: FW: [LegacyUG] Legacy 6 on Website??? But I have 7
That's a feature that is used in The Master Geneologist... and it is interesting in the way it generates it's narrative reports... for instance, in TMG you would use... John Smith as the primary event person and add anyone under the event as a witness. As I recall you also assign a role to the witness (which can be defined per fact) For instance... Census 1910 John Smith --- Fill out all the data you need == Witness Jane Smith - Role Wife Witness Jim Smith - Role Son Witness Joseph Smith - Role Son Witness Jenny Smith - Role Daughter Witness Sam Brown - Role Boarder Witness Millie McPhee - Role Nanny and it would take all that and write out a narrative like this. John Smith's household was enumerated in the 1910 census. Jane Smith, his wife; Jim and Joseph Smith, his sons; Jenny Smith, his daughter; Sam Brown, a boarder; and Millie McPhee, a Nanny were recorded as living in the household. (My wording and grammar may not be correct, but TMG is very strong with it's narratives because of the witness features) Allen -- From: Ron Bernier [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2008 9:22 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: Re: FW: [LegacyUG] Legacy 6 on Website??? But I have 7 Jay/GC The purpose of being able to add witnesses allows you to link multiple persons to an event at one time. Ex: You find an ancestor listed as head of household in the 1880 Census. You create an event for the Census. Your ancestor's role is Head of Household. With the witness feature, you can enter all of the other members of the household as witnesses to the event - You have created only one event for the Head of Household, but if you go to each of the other family members who have been entered as witnesses to the event, you will find that each one has an event for the Census. Bear in mind, the term witness is not used in the sense that you would normally think of a witness. It means that someone was associated with the event. There are other programs that have implemented the ability to record witnesses, and it is a very nice feature. Again, the best reason for having/using witnesses is to link multiple people to an event and not have to create a separate event for each person. 2008/5/28 Jay S. When version 6 was released withhout a witness feature, we were told it turned out to be more complicated to implement than anticipated. Following the release of version 6, Ken McGinnis was asked seveal times about the ability to include witnesses in Legacy. Each time we were told that this was a very important enhancement in the eyes of Millenia and it would definitely be included at some point. It never did get included in version 6 and from the banter regarding the new features in version 7, it still doesn't sound like the ability to link multiple individuals (witnesses) has been implemented. [LegacyUG] Re: [Legacy] v7 update to 7.0.0.38
Geoff, Why can't you guys release it for immediate download for those who would like to pay for the upgrade. There are no discs to produce and send. I choose not to purchase discs nowadays because it is much friendlier on the environment. My cousin is a new Legacy user who has v7 and will be bringing her computer to the family reunion next weekend... sadly when I called in to see if I could purchase a copy I was told I would have to wait like everyone else. It would be nice to be able to pass her a copy of my data file and know we will have no problems sharing data. I can understand if you were sending tons of discs out... but setting it up for download should not cause too much trouble... especially if you farm out the download to cnet's download.com like a lot of other software companies do. Please consider your older loyal users... I for one feel a bit slighted that the newer ones are getting priority. You run a class act and I know it will be well worth the wait. [LegacyUG] Legacy List Problems - Stem from someone reporting false spam
I called a friend at Comcast and here is what she told me. It appears that someone is sending in the same-sex messages as spam reports. What they don't realize is that this serves no purpose but getting the whole list marked as spam for all of their subscribers after so many reports. This happens automatically after so many messages are reported and it's eventually reviewed by a human being. The person who is doing this will soon be getting a message from Comcast explaining when it's appropriate to mark something as spam. In this case it is not appropriate because this is a mailing list that each person must ask for to subscribe to. Just because you don't agree with the topic doesn't make it spam. This happens from time to time on mailing lists that are hosted independently. This list is an independent list and legacyfamilytree.com can be flagged as spam where topica and yahoogroups are obviously mailing lists. I hope this helps Allen -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Sherry/Support Sent: Thursday, October 11, 2007 4:24 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy List Problems Dave, I tried responding to your email to Support this morning. When spam is reported from this list... it is reported as the listserver not the individual. If you look at spamcop, the best antispam group on the web I might add, they say NEVER EVER report mail from a listserver... it's against their terms of service. It's also against comcast's terms of service. They will get a stern warning from Comcast, or some of the subsidiaries that comcast serves (smaller cable companies that sell comcast as their brand). Ultimately they damage the list and then themselves. It is not for us to deal with... comcast will handle it. Oh but you can title it that way... there's a way to over-ride the title... it's on one of the tabs at the top of the ancestor book report. One of my granddaughters is named after one of them. I have done a limited tree on them, using their family bibles, photos and county histories and letters that were found among their things. When I print a report for my family, I use the publishing center and include their tree as a separate chapter. I have adequately explained their importance to our family in their individual notes. My only complaint is not being able to show it as the Ancestor Chart of Miriam and Marjorie Haire. I must choose only one of them as the starting person, but that is the nature of the program and I accept it. I could export it as .rtf and change it, but I like doing my reports in .pdf. So, when I go to get this information -- I will not be able to leave with the Bible, I must do it all there, in his presence. Do I take my computer and scanner, and scan the pages to PDF, do I write down the information on paper, do I take digital pictures of the pages, or a combination of all of these? As a beginner (less than six months), I've not begun to deal with sourcing as much as I should, and want to start doing this as I go. Also, I saw that someone stated to also put in the source the type of Bible, printing, etc. Is that recommended as a standard, or is it just personal pref? I will, undoubtedly, do what I feel is best for me, but at the same time, I like to loosely stick with the known standards, so that in the future my work can be picked up by my descendents and other family members as needed, and it won't be hard to follow. Re: [LegacyUG] Family Bible Sourcing
It helps establish the time period of the bible and the printing method (helping establish provenance) on old bibles those are usually the most adorned and well printed pages in the bible. Just helps you to authenticate it later and know that it is a bible from that time frame. My event for jail is simply called jail. The sentence that it generates is... [HeShe] was incarcerated at [Desc], [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes] My moonshie event reads [HeShe] was a moonshiner [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes] I usually on the jail event use the Between Jan 1, 1920 and Feb 14, 1920 for the time he was in jail... then freeform sentences as to why in the Notes field. Looks good on the reports. My Grandparents actually met running moonshine from Tennessee to Chicago. How can we respectably change it to something other than spouse... there's the old word concubine... what's the appropriate word to describe someone who has had a child with someone out of wedlock. This I can solve with a bit of logic... a fact that they transgendered would probably be appropriate in this matter. The bottom line is their DNA will always show their birth gender no matter. #1. They are sterile so if they previously had children they won't be able to have them now.. perhaps it would be best to leave him as a him and put a transgendered fact on it stating that he had a sex change to a she on xx date. #2. If they have not had previous children I would just change the sex and use the same transgender fact saying that she was a he by birth or something like that. It's still a sticky one... or you could record that the person known as Jim Smith died on 1/1/1980 and Jane Smith was born on 1/1/1980 the day that the sex change happened? Whew... what a mess. Re: [LegacyUG] Children out of Wedlock
I know what you mean... my other grandparents told everyone that they met in college... sure enough they met in college... I wrote the university with copies of their death certificates and told them i was doing family research and wanted to know if they had records of them in college. Sure enough they did... Both enrolled and stayed there exactly two weeks then left... they were married almost one year to the day afterwards and my eldest aunt was born exactly nine months after their marraige. I questioned my eldest aunt who had all the answers and found it to be more honorable. This was verified by a great aunt still living that went to college with my Grandmother. They did meet in college... the story was my Grandmother was instantly in love with Grandpa... and she told my Great aunt I'm going to make that boy get me a glass of water (which my Grandfather joked I've been bringing her water ever since). I had always thought my grandmother was college educated (she was very intelligent) but found out that was not the case. My Great Aunt and Elder Aunt told me that she, indeed left college about two weeks after she started... she had appendicitis... my Grandfather was also very much in love with her and stayed with her the entire time at the hospital. Her parents were unable to come and take care of her so he arranged transportation and accompanied her home where he was welcomed by the family... he stayed and took care of my Grandmother and helped on her parent's farm until she was better. She took about ten months to recover and they married shortly afterward. I wrote the hospital and sure enough they provided me with more proof of her stay there and what was done. Being a small town hospital they had access to their records archives and did not destroy them I was fortunate. Isn't it amazing what you can find out if you just dig. Re: [LegacyUG] Please take it off list -- IT'S A LEGITMATE QUERY, FOLKS!
Stacey... I agree fully... I got a free copy of Roots Magic with my World Vital Records subscription. Legacy has much more features except the ability to record a Male-Male / Female-Female relationships. I am honestly disheartened at the fact that we can not discuss real world issues. I do stress that I am no fan of Same Sex Marraiges or relationships. I am sure that the ones that are so opposed to this are Christians... as I am... but they forget that we are to love the person not the sin. I don't judge my homosexual family... and like you I feel that it should be recorded in our family history. I have a cousin who is a lesbian who has a biological child with her lesbian partner using sperm donated by her gay brother... (talk about a mess there). I also have another cousin who is gay that legally adopted his partner's biological children. They come to the family reunions and we welcome them as family... to not do so would mean we are judging them and we too will be judged as we judge. Now that you know the mechanics of the situation... how best should this be recorded in our family history? I know that this is an Elephant in the room but ignoring it won't make it go away. I am trying to discuss this as an adult keeping my beliefs and negativity -OUT- of the equation. I would hope that others (especially the Legacy staff) would take note that this is a real-world issue that is going to become more and more prevalent as governments continue to Legalize same-sex unions. It is nothing that has not happened throughout time... just in modern times it's not as hidden as it once was. Allen Stacey Connella wrote: I certainly hope the petty arguments I see on in this list aren't representative of all the Legacy users. I'm currently evaluating Legacy against RootsMagic after 15 years on FTM. All things being equal between the two (i.e., same number of pros and cons, and neither being lacking in any key features I consider to be essential to my style of research), I must say that the tone of this thread is enough to be the tie-breaker (in favor of RM3). I find it astonishing that an obviously legitimate, family history subject should be banned. Note, I said family history, not genealogy. Let's face it... the vast majority of people working on family trees, are NOT engaged in academic genealogy of a purist nature. They are recording everything they find to be relevant to their family's history, everything that might be potentially meaningful to future generations. This type of research and documentation is much more about family relationships than blood lines. As long is this list is not restricted exclusively to Legacy users who are rigidly academic genealogical purists, the subject is without question a legitimate one. It could even be argued that it's extremely relevant to pure genealogy, as well. After all, if homosexuality is ever proven to be genetically determined, one might expect future members of their blood line to find it helpful to to know whether it runs in the family. I've only been on list a few weeks, but nearly every time I've seen the topic raised, it's been in a process-related vein. People simply want to know the best way of documenting these relationships in their family histories and/or how to process them specifically with their Legacy software. There is nothing about the decision to include this subject in their histories that is any more wrong or offensive than any other of the other non-mainstream events that come up -- things like children born out of wedlock, philandering, insanity, murder, mixed race relationships, and so on. (I'm guessing most of these might be similarly offensive to those who have a moral objection to homosexuality; if so, I'd be curious to know how they deal with these *problems* in their family trees.) Granted, users SHOULD search the archives before posting any query, but the reality is that they often don't. Or, if they do, perhaps they fail to find the previous discussions of a topic. So, when a repeat query is posted, why can't somebody simply reply with the link? This POLITELY and helpfully provides the desired assistance, AND effectively ends the thread. As far as I can see, the only reason the discussion goes on and on and on and on is because users feel compelled to respond with their opinions on (1) the appropriateness or inappropriateness of same sex relationships, (2) whether it's right or wrong for Legacy not to revise its code in order to more easily deal with these relationships, or, (3) most frequently, whether the query should even be posed in the first place. This final response always seems to be based on the argument that too many people are offended by the topic, or that it's genealogically inappropriate to record such relationships. I see similarly heated responses to other subjects, especially adoption. So why has this volatile subject not been banned? Bottom line: These argumentative,

Jim... If this is the official word from Legacy Technical support and the company then I can assume that we will never see this support in the software in the future. There are several very public messages today that indicate that there are some of us who need this... granted we don't always agree with it the need is there. I, as a long time paying customer, feel very slighted in being silenced over a real issue because some have their own personal agendas of what is correct and proper in procedure and what is moral in their eyes. It is my hopes that as a moderator you can keep the topic on the issue and not let it degrade into a discussion on how immoral or wrong this is. Whether we agree if it is immoral or moral we still have it going on in our family. It probably has repeated before... there are many old spinsters who had no children and unmarried men in the past. Things were not as open before and God forbid if it is genetic it could help future generations. If this is Legacy's official stance then I guess I can abandon hope that it will ever have this functionality... now I am asking you as a technical support representative... how can I best prepare my datafile to import into another genealogy software? [LegacyUG] Adoptions
There were many times when my family were going west on the wagon trains where parents died leaving children. My ancestors adopted and raised those children often they took the family name. THEY ARE FAMILY as far as I am concerned. I tag their biological parents if known as a second set of parents and show them as adopted. I have cousins who are adopted and I love them like blood. Also the LDS Church is pushing adoptions - what is their official stand on it? Sara Binkley Tarpley wrote: So what would you suggest that I call reports and charts that show my adopted child? My child was abandoned shortly after birth by persons unknown. He is my child through love and law. What would it say to him, what would it do to him emotionally if I omit him from my family in charts and reports? The law treats him as my descendant. I am not trying to be argumentative here. This is a subject that comes up on this and other lists not infrequently. It is a serious subject. Loving adoptive parents refuse to hurt their children by not showing them as such. Some genealogists assert that said adoptive parents are being deceptive by so showing them on charts. So, since it is unlikely that adoptive parents will change their practices, what should we call our charts? What about a chart that has 99.9% people related by blood, and one person who is adopted? Are you seriously suggesting that instead of calling a chart Descendants of John Q. Ancestor I call it Social Relationships of John Q. Ancestor? Will I be deceptive if I call it Family Relationships of John Q. Ancestor? Of course, those I send such a report to won't know what in blazes I am talking about. Your messages are far more inflammatory than the topic at hand and serve no purpose but to clutter the thread. Obviously -YOU- have a problem with this thread. If you can't just suspend the ethics and morality (as I am doing) of the topic and just discuss the mechanics of the problem then please just keep your peace and inflame no more. The official moderator has posted his statement and I am getting the feeling that he just might let us talk about this issue if we can focus on the issue itself. Sadly, the legal definition of marriage is changing around the world... and other cultures with other values do genealogy as well. While I will make no bones about it I don't support same-sex marriages, what do we do when children are involved? What if you have 2 females who have children and one of them is in your bloodline? There are -REAL- issues here and we are adults. We all have the capability to discuss this as mature and reasonable adults. Perhaps the people who should be called out by the moderator are the people who try to derail the mature and reasonable discussion... as well as those who are unable to conduct a mature and reasonable discussion about the matter. My Great Grandmother was a very wise woman who always taught us that ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away. So perhaps this is a time when we can come to the table and discuss this problem in a mature and reasonable manner. I'm off my soapbox and my sincere apologies to the moderator. RE: [LegacyUG] RTFM usage
Another blow up from the politically correctness police. RTFM has been around since the punched card days... and it meant back then, and is still taught in university classes to mean Read the FRIENDLY Manual. It wasn't until the late 80's that that the truly Famous Four letter Word came into play. Back in the old days when we actually had to write manuals that came with the software we were driven to make them friendly... hence the term user friendly. The term Friendly Manual has been an industry term for as long as I can remember. Using your logic one can offended by your e-mail address... after all it starts with MF which can be interpreted in many fantastic ways. Stay off of the Diabetic groups... every other message discusses BS. In fact you'll probably see more BS there than anywhere else on earth. Of course the diabetic lists obsess over improving their Blood Sugar. Bottom line... not everything is as it seems... and if you get bent out of shape over someone typing RTFM then you need to really look into why your mind is gutter wandering in the first place. RE: [LegacyUG] photos of documents for sources
I wish that legacy would allow you to attach PDF files instead of JPG files... I scan all of my source documents into PDF file and try to transcribe them into text as well. I then merge the text and image PDF's together. When I was using the other evil (FTM) genealogy program it would allow us to attach PDF's and embed them into your file. It was wonderfully handy to just click on them and I have a PDF of a website or a PDF of a rev war pension file or a PDF of a book I scanned for quick reference. I usually scan all Genealogy books I purchase for the sheer fact that I can easily OCR index them with Adobe and then search them really quickly. In addition to others, I have six basic master sources called: Certificate/Record - Baptism Certificate/Record - Birth Certificate/Record - Confirmation Certificate/Record - Death Certificate/Record - Divorce Certificate/Record - Marriage I might use one of these and in the Source Detail list something like: Email KILKENNEY from Bill Surname to Susan Daily dated Oct 31, 2006 8:35 PM. I then place the entire body of the email into the Detail Text tab. or instead, I will use the master source of Person - William Bill Surname and the detail of Email Re: Presset St. Toledo OH - Kilkenny connection dated Dec 22, 2006 3:57 PM. and place the email into the Detail Text tab. You might think about using this last option, but changing the master source from Internet Web Site to more specific ones like Rootsweb.com Message Board Post. I have been more specific in my Master Source naming when I downloaded a GEDCOM from Rootsweb's WorldConnect and exchanged correspondance with the owner who told me where she obtained her information. In that case I used the Master Source title of GEDCOM - McGovernNY by Patricia Surname, her name as the author, the title of the GEDCOM as the title, the type as GEDCOM, and under publication noted the last update date, and the URL location of the tree. I have a Linksys network access storage point that I attached to my router... it plugs into an Ethernet port and I can plug two USB hard drives in it. I have two 250mb hard drives plugged into it and have it set to mirror them (one is exactly the same as the other). I mapped the first drive to Z: on all computers. On this drive live my digital photos, source documents and etc. Daily I backup my laptop's legacy files to a folder called Leg-Backup and I name the zip files 14-Feb-07.zip for the data and 14-Feb-07m for the media. I keep the data files indefinitely... the media files I back up on Wednesdays and I only keep a week of them. I can't tell you how many times this filepile has saved my butt. My Laptop was stolen once, damaged in a wreck once and I am on the third one... it restored beautifully each time. I have learned much from all of the questions and responses. Now I need some advice from the many who have more expertise than I. Due to a disability I have a PC but use my laptop more frequently. But alas! Last week my laptop hard drive gave up the ghost, died, and I lost everything I had not saved to, yes, floppies. My CD burner also was not working. Not to despair, however. Although I lost all of my Legacy data, it is still on paper. Both my mother and I had been doing genealogy research since the pen and paper days. For the most part I had just been entering data from the paper records and doing some online research to verify. And I had printed most of the data I had found on line of significance. So, before I reinstall Legacy and begin again, I would like to know if any of you have installed Legacy on a shared drive and how it worked for you. In other words, I would install it on both my PC and my laptop, when I get it back, in a shared situation so that what I enter on one computer would be available on the other without carrying CDs or flash drives from one to the other. By the way, I have as secure in-home wireless network for my communication. This would be especially helpful since my scanner is connected only to my PC but I can't spend much time at my PC on each occasion. Your opinions and words of wisdom are greatly appreciated. RE: [LegacyUG] Geo Database
Perhaps legacy can add a feature that will display county in the long format if the user selects it. This way we all can have options. I would also like the county verification that's built into legacy to adjust the appropriate county for the time frame preserving that is entered. For example... Scott, Tennessee, USA was actually Campbell county before 1750... and before that it was part of north Carolina. It would be neat to have ancestry automatically offer corrections for the appropriate time frames. I'm aware of the accepted format. I was asking about and proposing that Legacy give the user the option of having county names entered with the word county after them when using the Geo database. That way users would be free to choose. The Geo database wouldn't have to have its core data changed to do this--only the Geo program itself. It's not a critical issue but I thought I'd ask the question just to be sure I wasn't missing anything. You do bring up some valid points that folks need to consider before using the word county. I may have to rethink it myself! :-) Dennis Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Legacy 6.0 Deluxe has 92 features not found in the Standard Edition.
