Re: [LegacyUG] Apple computers

You don't need windows installed to run DarWine and it will run on
either version of OS-X... Intel or PowerPc. However, this setup is not
one for the beginner. I am running it just fine on an older G3 iMac
running under Darwine... but it took me DAYS to get the setup just right.

WINE stands for (Wine Is --NOT-- and Emulator) meaning Windows is not
needed at all. However there are some .dll's you will need to acquire
from a working windows system to get it 100% right.

On the older versions of the Mac OS or without the Intel chipset, you will

Legacy will run just fine, although slower than it would under Windows.

While I use Legacy for my hard core research you can not top iFamily for
a mac native family history program. It prints some of the most awesome
and unique reports I have ever seen... however it's lacking a bit on the
research side (but they are improving it very quickly.)

Take a look at http://ifamilyfortiger.com/ for more information.

I absolutely love Legacy though... but iFamily brings photos and media
together in a way only the mac can do it. I have the best of both worlds.

A search of the list archives (see the link at the bottom of this and
every post) on the word apple (without the quotes) will bring up
past discussions about this.

Legacy is a Windows-based program, however it has been reported that
it will work on an Apple with the resources to emulate or otherwise
interact with Windows. Rather than try to reproduce it all here, it's
probably better to go to the archives and read the posts from the
people with the experience and knowledge you seek.

Hope this helps. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Apple computers

2008-08-04 Thread Allen Prunty
On my newer MAC, I peeled the label off of an older PC that I was
junking that had a windows XP serial number on it. I then installed
that machine's XP on my newer mac using bootcamp I used clear contact
paper to re-affix that windows license sticker to my mac. It's still a
vailid license and it's no longer being used on the original machine.

Much like when I bought a new machine I installed MS Office on the new
machine after uninstalling it from the old machine. Thus transferring
my license to a new machine. The license reads may only be used on one
machine... and since it is, it's in compliance with the license.

If you have an old machine that you will junk just recycle the XP
license number... if not, I have found older machines with valid
licenses for free on Craig's list or freecycle.

This way you can run bootcamp on the newer machine and have legacy with
minimal cost. Or you can go with WINE, but beware it's not something
that someone who doesn't understand higher machine setup should
attempt. WINE works, but it's not an easy setup. Darwine does not
require windows at all and you can use it under older machines. I'm
running it on a G3 imac using panther.

Gail,

My sources are displayed the same way. TNG appears to use the Source Name list
field, rather than the source title field. I create my gedcoms using 5.5 and
the sources are still identified as yours are in my TNG site. I don't think
it's anything you're doing or could do differently, unless you want to change

so I won't change anything in Legacy. Perhaps one day Darrin will change the
way TNG reads the sources in Legacy.

I have a few questions for those of you using TNG v7 (The Next
Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding) to create your website and using
Legacy v7 for your database.

1) Have you converted any/all of your sources using Legacy's new sourcewriter?
2) Have you imported a gedcom file to your website?
3) Did your sources appear on your website as you wished them to?

An example of one of my census sources shows on my website as follows
(see http://www.roots2buds.net/getperson.php?personID=I6256
http://www.roots2buds.net/getperson.php?personID=I6256tree=nestor
tree=nestor):

Census: Alabama, Marshall - 1850 U.S. Census [Ancestry.com images],
Alabama, Marshall County, (http://www.ancestry.com: National Archives
and Records Administration, 2005), M432, roll 10, District 23, p. 272,
dwelling 123, family 124, David Rich household, accessed 16 Feb 2007,
1 Jul 2008.

This is how it appears on the screen in Legacy (and the way I would
like it to appear):
1850 U.S. census, Marshall County, Alabama, population schedule,
District 23, p. 272, dwelling 123, family 124, David Rich household;
digital image, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 16 Feb
2007); citing National Archives and Records Administration microfilm
M432, roll 10.

It seems that TNG is using the Master Source List Name (Census:
Alabama, Marshall - 1850 U.S. Census [Ancestry.com images]) of the
source in place of the master source template information from Legacy
(1850 U.S. census, Marshall County, Alabama, population schedule).

Is this due to the way I am generating my gedcom? I created the
gedcom in Legacy v7 using the following options:
Export To: GEDCOM File
Produce File For: Legacy
Keep embedded formatting codes within text: checked
Convert formatting codes to HTML style: checked

I would very much appreciate help with this issue!

You do have to go and manually link your media for best effect... TNG

any other application, including people who only use TNG.

With the introduction of mapping with Legacy 7 and the ability to mass
resolve most of your locations with VE (and yes, I know, that they
then have to be checked. Yet, getting a large number done with little
work is worth it when the rest are no more work than if you did them
manually...) allows you to make use of TNG's Mapping facility
seamlessly. This is, I believe, a Legacy only feature.

Legacy users should definitely consider TNG if they wish to publish on
line.

Courier Journal, Louisville, KY (ARTICLES)

Christian,

I totally agree with you. And the same you apply when you buy a car. I have
only bought Fords ever since I got my first one 22 years ago. I think the Ford
automotive company should give me a new car everytime they come out with a new
model. I deserve it! After all I have been a faithful Ford owner for over 2
decades! Right?

 Ken,

 You said:

Those who purchase in last 10 months have already paid for Legacy 7.0

Deluxe and really deserve to have it first.

My question is: What about the loyal customers who started way back with

Legacy version 2.0; also bought version 3.0 and version 4.0 and version 5.0

and purchased the download version of version 6? (By the way I have CD's of

each of these versions except v6.0, for which I have my customer number, to

prove my point). Are these people because they bought the new versions more

or less at the time that each was released not MORE important than Johnny

Come Latelies that only bought a copy within the last 10 months?

I must admit your explanation as to who really deserve to have the new

version first, makes no logic sense to me.

Assigned Source ListDiane...

Open a wordpad window... simply click start then click run and type wordpad and
hit enter to open this program (or you can even us MS Word). Go back to legacy
and get the data to display on the screen like you like it.

Then hit your printscreen button.

Click on the wordpad program and go to edit and paste.

An image will appear in that window where you can print it.

There are also other handy little print screen programs out there I like this
one a lot.

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: [LegacyUserGroup] (No Subject)

2008-06-09 Thread Allen Prunty
If the publisher's colophon is intact and you know who the original
publisher, author, where the book was published, and all other information
relevant to the source I would enter it just as you would source the book...
then enter the website as the repository.

I also would strongly suggest using Adobe PDF (Full version) to create a PDF
of the website to store (since they have a habit of going down) or creating
a web archive (MHT) file with internet explorer to preserve the website for
your use only not to be distributed. I have accessed some wonderful
sites in the past that are no more. Also... websites that disappear over
time can also be accessed from http://www.archive.org which is also known as
the internet way-back machine.

To me there's nothing so frustrating when I am grading papers as not being
able to find the root source... in this case the book is the root source
the website is nothing more than a repository like the library.

Your source would be where you read the information. In this case an

Re: [LegacyUG] how to register foster siblings?

2008-06-09 Thread Allen Prunty
I have a cousin that mom adopted that I grew up with and this is how we
recorded him after his parents were killed.

Simply record them (or link them) as a child under the family that's
fostering them.

Go to the edit pulldown and choose Children's settings.

You will see Mother's relationship to child and Father's relationship to
child just pull those down and select foster, adopted, step or whatever
applies.

Hope this helps... let me know.

It's my understanding that Source Writer is designed to format source
citations according to Evidence Explained -- which I don't have. I
have Evidence! from 1997. I didn't think there would be much
difference, but so far there is. Since no one's complained til now, I
figure I must have done something wrong.

Example of a death certificate cite from the 1997 book:

Floyd Finley Shown, death certificate no. 59-0224 (1959), Tennessee
Department of Public Health, Nashville.

Cite with Source Writer:

Tennessee Department of Public Health, death certificate 59-0224 (1959),
Floyd Finley Shown; Tennessee Department of Public Health, Nashville.

I haven't found a source yet that's cited the way I would expect. Is
the 1997 book just plain obsolete? Am I missing something obvious? I
know I can keep doing things the way I was BS (before Seven), but I
was really looking forward to using the Source Writer.

Having entered the child with the desired parents, right click on the
child and select Children's Settings. With the child highlighted (it will
be if there is only one entered) select from Child Status.

I think the default list for Child Status is Adopted, None, Stillborn or
Twin, but you will see that there is an option to add any other Status you
wish, so you can create Fostered.

[LegacyUG] Historical vs Geo Location Database

2008-06-07 Thread Allen Prunty
I have a location...

Topanemus, Monmouth, New Jersey, USA

How do I get Legacy to make it compatible with it's Geo Location database?

How would I check for historical county information?

And most importantly how can I get V7 to insert Co. after the county?

2008-06-05 Thread Allen Prunty
The install password is on the screen immediately shown after you put in
your information. I did not get the e-mail either and noticed it after
signing up.

No where on their new site does it show what was added between versions...
the only thing I know for sure is maps and the talk of a new source template

I'm not sure if it's worth the bother right now.

The install pasword only gives you the standard version. You need the
customer number from the email to enable the Deluxe version.

From receipt of purchase confirmation email to receipt of customer number
email took 4 hours and 34 minutes: 11:34PM to 4:08AM.

John

Very frustrating--I am a paid customer. I wanted to upgrade to the 7.0
Deluxe from my 6.0 Deluxe. First I downloaded the free 7.0 version and
then purchased the upgrade. In the meantime, I was told I would be
emailed the install password (used to be family for 6.0) so I could at
least play around with the 7.0 standard.

Alas, I got no such email and the recorded message on the Tech line
(long since closed) had the OLD password.

Does anyone know the new one for 7.0? I was hoping Legacy would keep up
with their tech recorded messages--don't release 7.0 until you have that
in place. Very frustrating to any customer, free or paying.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy vs TMG and then some

2008-06-01 Thread Allen Prunty
The new version of FTM does -NOT- require the older program to import... you
can directly import from any older format however, it is a one way
import... any changes in data done via FTM2008 must be exported to GEDCOM in
order to re-load into older versions of FTM.

  Cathy,
Thanks for the comments and I am looking forward to trying V7. For the
FTM problem, I have reinstalled it on three drives now always from the original
FTM disk. The problem may come from the bug patch (?) that had to be down
loaded and I have that on disk also. I have tried all export and import options
but nothing effects the fragmentation problem in the slightest. FTM was bought
out after V.11 and they refused to address my problem. Their solution is to
upgrade to 2008. Someone told me that 2008 required the older programs to
export to a GED. If that is the case than the FTM people have their heads in
the wrong place and I have heard nothing good about 2008. I could, if I felt
bold (don't really) try to make corrections to the code but I really don't know
what I am doing and I have a lot of large family files (since FTM doesn't
handle well over 15,000 people). I don't want to mess with it right now. As
for mapping. My husband is a Linux geek and my son is a programmer. Neither
care much about MY research so if I want them to be of any Tech Support, I
have to stay clear of anything MS if at all possible and that includes
anything IE. My husband in particular keeps pointing me toward the Linux
screen. He has even given me programs that run on both OS's to make the
transition easier. LOL {Laugh Out Loud}
I don't yet understand how Gramps (Linux program written in Python, a
programing language) can read my GEDCOM when others can't. Chalk one up for the
Linux people. But there is a positive side to this. I can import to Gramps
(Windows version) and then export to Legacy with very few, minor, problems to
correct. (No more fragmented families!) This is why I am exploring Gramps and
Legacy side by side. Thus, it would not be much of a problem to import some of
my smaller, less developed projects in to Legacy. I will be trying that latter
this summer.
Wishing us all happy trails in all our V.7 adventures!
  Jane

Hi Jane,Three comments.Legacy 7 reports give the option to have sources as
footnotes, endnotes or endnotes at the end of each section/generation.Re
importing an FTM generated GEDCOM into Legacy. There are notes on the Legacy
Web pages on what options to choose
when exporting the Gedcom and I think there are also notes about the import. I
know that you need to check the notes after import. If they have developed
strange spaces, then you've used the wrong option for notes and need to import
again.Legacy 6 works far better on XP - and a computer with more RAM. Legacy 7
requires much the same although for mapping you need IE7 and I think it would
drive you mad without broadband connection. I don't understand people not being
interested in maps. :-) To have the relevant map available with a click or two
is wonderful. Perhaps you haven't seen the zoom level and the Aerial and Bird's

FTM 2008's latest version is 17.0.0.965 and it's not based on one line of

Re: [LegacyUG] Maintain Perspective

2008-05-30 Thread Allen Prunty
Well from my perspective the virtual downloadable product only needs to be
set up once and takes absolutely no time and physical work to ship out.
It's merely a download.

From my perspective it would be best to get the product in their older

user's hands first... then the newbies second.

Legacy v7 should have been downloadable the -first- day the -first- box
shipped. As a paying user for a long time I feel we should have gotten
first treatment... not the second banana.

I agree whole heartedly. Every time I have ever contacted Legacy the
service has been exemplary and these days you do not see that very
often. Even when we did not totally agree on a solution, Sherry (and
the others) goes out of her way to try, and come up with something
workable. I am NOT looking for a new job (I am lucky and have very
enjoyable decent paying work), but if there was ever a company I
thought I would like to work for, this is it! I admire the way they
do things, and how robust, yet streamlined and sensible the program
is. I like the way the developers know their stuff and obviously are
genealogy nuts themselves, and are not just a university grad trying
to make a buck after graduation.

While I would like to see whats new, I am in no panic cause we already
have an excellent workable product with Legacy 6. If we are lucky
maybe Legacy will put an extra treat in for those of us who have
supported them over the years. Remember the easter eggs that
software developers used to put in their new releases. I have not
seen one of those in years and they were fun! Perhaps a special
background or templates of some kind dedicated to those of us who
waited?

Sherry...

I wish legacy would officially take a look at http://www.winehq.org/ and see
how well legacy v5 works under Unix and Mac OSX under wine. It's almost
flawless.

There are some help issues (based on the new windows XP's Help files) with
the v6 but I can get it to work and do all the major functions of the
program.

I am hoping that v7 will be as functional.

We are not using an intel chipset here... still using the power-PC Chipset
running legacy under wine and not having any problems with it. I do have XP
on my laptop run native there.

On the older versions of the Mac OS or without the Intel chipset, you will

It will not run on an Apple computer directly, however:

You do have the option on Apple to run a virtual machine of say
Windows XP or Vista on the apple machines. There are about three
different emulators or dual boot packages that will do that. Once you
are running the virtual machine (Windows XP), you could install Legacy
and run it as if you were on a Windows machine.

So, you can run Legacy in a Virtual Machine.

Re: FW: [LegacyUG] Legacy 6 on Website??? But I have 7

2008-05-29 Thread Allen Prunty
That's a feature that is used in The Master Geneologist... and it is
interesting in the way it generates it's narrative reports... for instance,
in TMG you would use... John Smith as the primary event person and add
anyone under the event as a witness. As I recall you also assign a role to
the witness (which can be defined per fact)

For instance...

Census 1910 John Smith --- Fill out all the data you need
== Witness Jane Smith - Role Wife
Witness Jim Smith - Role Son
Witness Joseph Smith - Role Son
Witness Jenny Smith - Role Daughter
Witness Sam Brown - Role Boarder
Witness Millie McPhee - Role Nanny

and it would take all that and write out a narrative like this.

John Smith's household was enumerated in the 1910 census. Jane Smith,
his wife; Jim and Joseph Smith, his sons; Jenny Smith, his daughter; Sam
Brown, a boarder; and Millie McPhee, a Nanny were recorded as living in the
household.

(My wording and grammar may not be correct, but TMG is very strong with it's
narratives because of the witness features)

Jay/GC

The purpose of being able to add witnesses allows you to link
multiple persons to an event at one time. Ex: You find an ancestor
listed as head of household in the 1880 Census. You create an event
for the Census. Your ancestor's role is Head of Household. With the
witness feature, you can enter all of the other members of the
household as witnesses to the event - You have created only one
event for the Head of Household, but if you go to each of the other
family members who have been entered as witnesses to the event, you
will find that each one has an event for the Census. Bear in mind,
the term witness is not used in the sense that you would normally
think of a witness. It means that someone was associated with the
event.

There are other programs that have implemented the ability to record
witnesses, and it is a very nice feature. Again, the best reason
for having/using witnesses is to link multiple people to an event and
not have to create a separate event for each person.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand your request for a Witness feature.
Is
this a space in sources that allows one to source data that we received
from
direct interviews of the ancestor? If not, could you please let me know
what

you mean.

While I cannot do anything achieve your request, I am very intersted in
knowing what the Witness (Participant) feature is.

Sorry for the neophyte question.

Christina,

Legacy still has the potential for being a great product, but you need
to understand that some of us have lost respect for Millenia and do
not put much faith in anything they say these days. Prior to the
release of version 6, I (among others) asked if there were any plans
to include a witness (participant) feature in Legacy 6.0. We were
told that this would be included. When version 6 was released
withhout a witness feature, we were told it turned out to be more
complicated to implement than anticipated. Following the release of
version 6, Ken McGinnis was asked seveal times about the ability to
include witnesses in Legacy. Each time we were told that this was a
very important enhancement in the eyes of Millenia and it would
definitely be included at some point. It never did get included in
version 6 and from the banter regarding the new features in version 7,
it still doesn't sound like the ability to link multiple individuals
(witnesses) has been implemented.

In fact it has become apparent that when users ask about features that
Millenia has no interest in implementing, we get that now famous
mantra It will require a compete database re-write. Wholly Genes
(Bob Velke/The Master Genealogist) did a complete database rewrite
when they released version 6.0. TMG is now on version 7.02 Genbox
(Bill Flight) has a complete database re-write when they released the
current version 3.0. Genbox version 4.0 will be going to the beta
testers in the near future.

Bottom line, yes, I would like to continue using Legacy. However, I'm
willing to bet that I am not alone when I say I am tired of the Legacy
folks lying to the users and stringing us along.

[LegacyUG] DARWINE - For Older Power PC Macs

2008-05-29 Thread Allen Prunty
BTW... WINE stands for Wine Is Not An Emulator meaning you are effectively
running windows programs directly on a Mac without an emulator.

Here is the version for the older macs http://sourceforge.net/projects/darwine/

I'm hopeing that this will lead more mac users to the most useful PC Software
out there ... Legacy.

And I'm hoping that Legacy may consider looking into how they can make their
program a little more friendly towards WINE which would ultimately bring them
more users since there are not any really good Genealogy programs for the UNIX
and MAC... although iFamily Tree is pretty interesting... still not no Legacy.

Hmm... Guess they are just not Nerd enough... I run into that with our Apple
store... the clerks are just that... Clerks.

Wine means Wine Is Not an Emulator .

The earlier versions of WINE were not very good at running legacy. I think
that they are only recommending legacy 5 right now but it has reached the
Gold level of running under SUSE Linux
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=versioniId=7930iTestingId=11809
but I have had it run very stable under DarWine for Mac OS under version 6
with only problems with the help system.

Hope this helps a bit... and Sherry... for all my Whining about not
getting in the loop for version 7 I do appreciate all you guys do.

I'm glad to hear this because in the past, WINE for Linux did not test
well

with running Legacy!

Is this something new for the Mac? Is the speed adequate? Previous
emulators have been painfully slow for Legacy users.

It's interesting - I don't know anyone who uses a Mac and when I go into
the

local Mac store and ask about running Windows programs on the Mac, they
stare at me blankly and tell me to search the internet!

Thanks for using Legacy.

Sorry to inform you of this... but running legacy on a MAC does -NOT-
require windows to be installed... people who do not have MACs
should -NOT-

speak for those of us who do.

There is a compatibility layer that is written on 100% non-Microsoft code
called WINE that will allow you to install and run many windows programs
on
Mac OS-X (and you do not necessarily have to run the Intel version of a
Mac

either.)

Wine will run under Linux and other Unix types of systems. The version of
wine composed for the Mac is called Darwine which runs on the University
of

Berkely's Darwin unix core that the mac runs under.

Legacy v5 is absolutely stable with WINE. v6 has some issues mostly with
the help system but the developers of Wine are working them out... I am
interested in seeing how V7 works because it may be compiled in a more
modern way that will take advantage of the newer WINE librarys.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 and Apple Computers?

2008-05-28 Thread Allen Prunty

Not necessarily true...

Legacy 6 will run quite comfortably on Mac OS X with WINE see
http://www.winehq.org/

And it's fully functional. Wine is a compatibilty layer (it's 100%
non-microsoft) that will run windows programs on Linux, FreeBSD and MacOSX
(DarWine).

I have been able to run both Legacy 6 and Roots Magic under wine. I have
not yet tried sp3 of FTM 2008... but the other versions were so slow running
they were non functional. There is not a SP3 only install of FTM 2008 so I
can not test 2008 as of yet on it.

I can't wait to test Legacy 7 under wine to see if it works well on my Intel
Chip iMac.

Janis,

Running Legacy on a Mac still requires a version of Windows to be
installed.
If you are running Windows XP on the Mac, then you will be able to have
IE7
installed under the Windows XP system. (I don't have Mac experience, but
I
would guess it is running in a Virtual Machine like VMWare or Virtual PC
on

the WinTel PC side can do.)

On a newer Mac with the Intel processors, you can use several programs as
mentioned below by Sherry to run Windows XP. If you have an older Mac
with

a Motorolla processor, you need an emulator.

[LegacyUG] Legacy List Problems - Stem from someone reporting false spam

2007-10-14 Thread Allen Prunty
I called a friend at Comcast and here is what she told me. It appears that
someone is sending in the same-sex messages as spam reports. What they
don't realize is that this serves no purpose but getting the whole list
marked as spam for all of their subscribers after so many reports. This
happens automatically after so many messages are reported and it's
eventually reviewed by a human being. The person who is doing this will
soon be getting a message from Comcast explaining when it's appropriate to
mark something as spam. In this case it is not appropriate because this is
a mailing list that each person must ask for to subscribe to.

Just because you don't agree with the topic doesn't make it spam. This
happens from time to time on mailing lists that are hosted independently.
This list is an independent list and legacyfamilytree.com can be flagged as
spam where topica and yahoogroups are obviously mailing lists.

I hope this helps

Dave,

I tried responding to your email to Support this morning.

Comcast is bouncing our emails. I checked into this and it showed that we
weren't on their two spam blocker lists so I don't know why we're still
being bounced.

If you could check with Comcast about why LegacyFamilyTree.com is being
bounced, we'd appreciate it! They seem to like input from their customer
better than the senders!

The bounce message they're sending out is

I haven't received a single message from the list via my comcast email

suspect it's the same old thing where Comcast has added Legacy to their

When spam is reported from this list... it is reported as the listserver

Ultimately they damage the list and then themselves. It is not for us

I have done a limited tree on them, using their family bibles, photos and

When I print a report for my family, I use the publishing center and include

importance to our family in their individual notes.

My only complaint is not being able to show it as the Ancestor Chart of

export it as .rtf and change it, but I like doing my reports in .pdf.

Note: all you have to do is go to Add then New Unlinked Individual.

Allen,

I haven't seen a reply to this, but forgive me if I missed one.

I would make the website the source. Use the name of the website
and the title of the record (such as Access Genealogy, Bible
Records, FAMILY BIBLE OF JESSE BAIRD, put the URL in the
publication details and the date you accessed it. I would then
put the entire text in the Source Text.

When you use the Source for each person mentioned, you could put
in Source Detail the page number and the record such as Page 2,
Births, Joseph B. Baird born Aug.25th 1854.

That is just my take, others may have different ideas.

Do I take my computer and scanner, and scan the pages

take digital pictures of the pages, or a combination
of all of these?

As a beginner (less than six months), I've not begun
to deal with sourcing as much as I should, and want to
start doing this as I go.

Also, I saw that someone stated to also put in the
source the type of Bible, printing, etc. Is that
recommended as a standard, or is it just personal
pref?

I will, undoubtedly, do what I feel is best for me,

It helps establish the time period of the bible and the printing method

Just helps you to authenticate it later and know that it is a bible from

My event for jail is simply called jail.

The sentence that it generates is...

[HeShe] was incarcerated at [Desc], [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes]

My moonshie event reads

[HeShe] was a moonshiner [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes]

I usually on the jail event use the Between Jan 1, 1920 and Feb 14, 1920
for the time he was in jail... then freeform sentences as to why in the
Notes field. Looks good on the reports.

My Grandparents actually met running moonshine from Tennessee to
Chicago. Grandma told me stories of putting it in tires and doing all
kinds of things to get it up there during prohibition. How else did a
Country Irish boy and a city mob family-girl get together. The only
things they had in common was moonshine and Catholicism.

If things keep going the way they are in the US they will have to add
the relationship... Baby Daddy and Baby Mama to the list. I have
worked as a social worker and some of the young ladies I have had in my
program have four or five children each by a different man (more like
boy) and they refer to him as James' Baby Daddy etc. (Yest Baby Daddy
and Baby Mama is a term that is frequently used in socialwork and court

The traditional family in the year 2007 is a VERY rare thing now days.

Now my question is (as my GGG Uncle that really got around the town) has
many relationships recorded as children there are descriptors like
spouse we could change on that page.

How can we respectably change it to something other than spouse...
there's the old word concubine... what's the appropriate word to
describe someone who has had a child with someone out of wedlock.

I know that the legal term for the child is Bastard... is there a nicer
term for that? I do want to publish this for my family eventually and
want to use the most polite terms as I can. My grandmother who keeps up
on modern terms has labled him as a man-slut but I don't think that's
what I want to go down in our history either.

===

The problem is not the topic of how to enter same-sex relationships per se.
The problem is that this topic gets very heated amongst the users so we have
asked that it not be discussed and questions about how to handle these
relationships be researched in the archives.

If people could sanely discuss the question about how to handle same-sex
relationships in Legacy and not start spouting personal beliefs one way or
the other, there wouldn't be a problem.

The whole thing is getting rather tiresome, quite frankly.

The programmers have said in the past that when they started Legacy, they
never considered same-sex relationships. Ken wrote in part Adding same sex
marriages at this time is simply a change that we feel would require
considerable programming time and would rip the guts out a huge percentage
of our core code base. We could add some patch style work-around but the
program would suffer greatly in processing speed in many areas

It has nothing to do with Millennia being adult about the real world.

able to have them now.. perhaps it would be best to leave him as a him

something like that.

It's still a sticky one... or you could record that the person known as

I know what you mean... my other grandparents told everyone that they
met in college...

sure enough they met in college... I wrote the university with copies of
their death certificates and told them i was doing family research and
wanted to know if they had records of them in college. Sure enough they
did... Both enrolled and stayed there exactly two weeks then left...
they were married almost one year to the day afterwards and my eldest
aunt was born exactly nine months after their marraige.

I questioned my eldest aunt who had all the answers and found it to be
more honorable. This was verified by a great aunt still living that
went to college with my Grandmother.

They did meet in college... the story was my Grandmother was instantly
in love with Grandpa... and she told my Great aunt I'm going to make
that boy get me a glass of water (which my Grandfather joked I've been
bringing her water ever since).

I had always thought my grandmother was college educated (she was very
intelligent) but found out that was not the case. My Great Aunt and
Elder Aunt told me that she, indeed left college about two weeks after
she started... she had appendicitis... my Grandfather was also very
much in love with her and stayed with her the entire time at the
hospital. Her parents were unable to come and take care of her so he
arranged transportation and accompanied her home where he was welcomed
by the family... he stayed and took care of my Grandmother and helped on
her parent's farm until she was better. She took about ten months to
recover and they married shortly afterward.

I wrote the hospital and sure enough they provided me with more proof of
her stay there and what was done. Being a small town hospital they had
access to their records archives and did not destroy them I was fortunate.

Isn't it amazing what you can find out if you just dig.

2007-10-06 Thread Allen Prunty

Stacey...

I agree fully... I got a free copy of Roots Magic with my World Vital
Records subscription. Legacy has much more features except the ability
to record a Male-Male / Female-Female relationships.

I am honestly disheartened at the fact that we can not discuss real
world issues. I do stress that I am no fan of Same Sex Marraiges or
relationships. I am sure that the ones that are so opposed to this are
Christians... as I am... but they forget that we are to love the person
not the sin. I don't judge my homosexual family... and like you I feel
that it should be recorded in our family history. I have a cousin who
is a lesbian who has a biological child with her lesbian partner using
sperm donated by her gay brother... (talk about a mess there). I also
have another cousin who is gay that legally adopted his partner's
biological children.

They come to the family reunions and we welcome them as family... to not
do so would mean we are judging them and we too will be judged as we judge.

Now that you know the mechanics of the situation... how best should this
be recorded in our family history?

I know that this is an Elephant in the room but ignoring it won't make
it go away. I am trying to discuss this as an adult keeping my beliefs
and negativity -OUT- of the equation. I would hope that others
(especially the Legacy staff) would take note that this is a real-world
issue that is going to become more and more prevalent as governments
continue to Legalize same-sex unions. It is nothing that has not
happened throughout time... just in modern times it's not as hidden as
it once was.

I certainly hope the petty arguments I see on in this list aren't
representative of all the Legacy users. I'm currently evaluating Legacy
against RootsMagic after 15 years on FTM. All things being equal between the
two (i.e., same number of pros and cons, and neither being lacking in any
key features I consider to be essential to my style of research), I must say
that the tone of this thread is enough to be the tie-breaker (in favor of
RM3).

I find it astonishing that an obviously legitimate, family history subject
should be banned. Note, I said family history, not genealogy. Let's face
it... the vast majority of people working on family trees, are NOT engaged
in academic genealogy of a purist nature. They are recording everything they
find to be relevant to their family's history, everything that might be
potentially meaningful to future generations. This type of research and
documentation is much more about family relationships than blood lines. As
long is this list is not restricted exclusively to Legacy users who are
rigidly academic genealogical purists, the subject is without question a
legitimate one. It could even be argued that it's extremely relevant to pure
genealogy, as well. After all, if homosexuality is ever proven to be
genetically determined, one might expect future members of their blood line
to find it helpful to to know whether it runs in the family.

I've only been on list a few weeks, but nearly every time I've seen the
topic raised, it's been in a process-related vein. People simply want to
know the best way of documenting these relationships in their family
histories and/or how to process them specifically with their Legacy
software. There is nothing about the decision to include this subject in
their histories that is any more wrong or offensive than any other of the
other non-mainstream events that come up -- things like children born out of
wedlock, philandering, insanity, murder, mixed race relationships, and so
on. (I'm guessing most of these might be similarly offensive to those who
have a moral objection to homosexuality; if so, I'd be curious to know how
they deal with these *problems* in their family trees.)

Granted, users SHOULD search the archives before posting any query, but the
reality is that they often don't. Or, if they do, perhaps they fail to find
the previous discussions of a topic. So, when a repeat query is posted, why
can't somebody simply reply with the link? This POLITELY and helpfully
provides the desired assistance, AND effectively ends the thread. As far as
I can see, the only reason the discussion goes on and on and on and on is
because users feel compelled to respond with their opinions on (1) the
appropriateness or inappropriateness of same sex relationships, (2) whether
it's right or wrong for Legacy not to revise its code in order to more
easily deal with these relationships, or, (3) most frequently, whether the
query should even be posed in the first place. This final response always
seems to be based on the argument that too many people are offended by the
topic, or that it's genealogically inappropriate to record such
relationships.

I see similarly heated responses to other subjects, especially adoption. So
why has this volatile subject not been banned?

Bottom line: These argumentative,

Jim...

If this is the official word from Legacy Technical support and the
company then I can assume that we will never see this support in the
software in the future. There are several very public messages today
that indicate that there are some of us who need this... granted we
don't always agree with it the need is there.

I, as a long time paying customer, feel very slighted in being silenced
over a real issue because some have their own personal agendas of what
is correct and proper in procedure and what is moral in their eyes.

It is my hopes that as a moderator you can keep the topic on the issue
and not let it degrade into a discussion on how immoral or wrong this
is. Whether we agree if it is immoral or moral we still have it going
on in our family. It probably has repeated before... there are many old
spinsters who had no children and unmarried men in the past. Things
were not as open before and God forbid if it is genetic it could help
future generations.

If this is Legacy's official stance then I guess I can abandon hope that
it will ever have this functionality... now I am asking you as a
technical support representative... how can I best prepare my datafile
to import into another genealogy software? Perhaps it's time to look
elsewhere.

[LegacyUG] Adoptions

2007-10-05 Thread Allen Prunty
There were many times when my family were going west on the wagon trains
where parents died leaving children. My ancestors adopted and raised
those children often they took the family name. THEY ARE FAMILY as far
as I am concerned. I tag their biological parents if known as a second
set of parents and show them as adopted.

I have cousins who are adopted and I love them like blood.

Also the LDS Church is pushing adoptions - what is their official stand
on it?

Sara Binkley Tarpley wrote:

So what would you suggest that I call reports and charts that show my
adopted child? My child was abandoned shortly after birth by persons
unknown. He is my child through love and law. What would it say to
him, what would it do to him emotionally if I omit him from my family
in charts and reports? The law treats him as my descendant.

I am not trying to be argumentative here. This is a subject that
comes up on this and other lists not infrequently. It is a serious
subject. Loving adoptive parents refuse to hurt their children by not
showing them as such. Some genealogists assert that said adoptive
parents are being deceptive by so showing them on charts. So, since
it is unlikely that adoptive parents will change their practices, what
should we call our charts? What about a chart that has 99.9% people
related by blood, and one person who is adopted? Are you seriously
suggesting that instead of calling a chart Descendants of John Q.
Ancestor I call it Social Relationships of John Q. Ancestor? Will
I be deceptive if I call it Family Relationships of John Q.
Ancestor? Of course, those I send such a report to won't know what
in blazes I am talking about.

I will probably get a message from the official moderator for this,
but as a list participant I do ask in fairness for people who are not
moderators please let the moderator handle it. Your messages are far
more inflammatory than the topic at hand and serve no purpose but to
clutter the thread.

Obviously -YOU- have a problem with this thread. If you can't just
suspend the ethics and morality (as I am doing) of the topic and just
discuss the mechanics of the problem then please just keep your peace
and inflame no more. The official moderator has posted his statement
and I am getting the feeling that he just might let us talk about this
issue if we can focus on the issue itself.

Sadly, the legal definition of marriage is changing around the world...
and other cultures with other values do genealogy as well. While I will
make no bones about it I don't support same-sex marriages, what do we do
when children are involved? What if you have 2 females who have
children and one of them is in your bloodline? There are -REAL- issues
here and we are adults. We all have the capability to discuss this as
mature and reasonable adults.

Perhaps the people who should be called out by the moderator are the
people who try to derail the mature and reasonable discussion... as well
as those who are unable to conduct a mature and reasonable discussion
about the matter.

My Great Grandmother was a very wise woman who always taught us that
ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away. So perhaps this is a time
when we can come to the table and discuss this problem in a mature and
reasonable manner.

I'm off my soapbox and my sincere apologies to the moderator. I do
value the advice to all who have shared good information thus far.

RE: [LegacyUG] RTFM usage

2007-03-06 Thread Allen Prunty
Another blow up from the politically correctness police. RTFM has been
around since the punched card days... and it meant back then, and is still
taught in university classes to mean Read the FRIENDLY Manual. It wasn't
until the late 80's that that the truly Famous Four letter Word came into
play. Back in the old days when we actually had to write manuals that came
with the software we were driven to make them friendly... hence the term
user friendly. The term Friendly Manual has been an industry term for
as long as I can remember.

Using your logic one can offended by your e-mail address... after all it
starts with MF which can be interpreted in many fantastic ways. Stay off of
the Diabetic groups... every other message discusses BS. In fact you'll
probably see more BS there than anywhere else on earth. Of course the
diabetic lists obsess over improving their Blood Sugar.

Bottom line... not everything is as it seems... and if you get bent out of
shape over someone typing RTFM then you need to really look into why your
mind is gutter wandering in the first place.

Cheers

Hi David,

I'm responding only to you. I, for one, do not appreciate the use of words
such as f There are so many wonderful, descriptive words in the
English language that are also meaningful. The use of such gutter
language does nothing to improve the meaning mostly because of the frequency
of its use. In other words, read the manual says as much as read the f...

is my opinion. Others on this list, however, may also share my opinion--and

RE: [LegacyUG] photos of documents for sources

2007-02-14 Thread Allen Prunty
I wish that legacy would allow you to attach PDF files instead of JPG
files... I scan all of my source documents into PDF file and try to
transcribe them into text as well. I then merge the text and image PDF's
together.

When I was using the other evil (FTM) genealogy program it would allow us to
attach PDF's and embed them into your file. It was wonderfully handy to
just click on them and I have a PDF of a website or a PDF of a rev war
pension file or a PDF of a book I scanned for quick reference.

I usually scan all Genealogy books I purchase for the sheer fact that I can
easily OCR index them with Adobe and then search them really quickly.

I have seen some discussions about attaching pictures to sources so I
decided to give it a try. I scanned a copy of a document and saved the
picture as a .jpg. I viewed it, to be sure it was readable then saved a copy

where I keep my Legacy photos. Then I went to Legacy to attach the picture
to the source and when I do, the picture is basically unreadable. Is there
something in the Legacy program that shows pictures with less quality? (I
guess it has to do with resolution, but I don't know a lot about that.). If
so, is it really worthwhile to attach documents at all?

Hi Dennis;
Now that everyone has voiced their opinion about how they like they
locations, it does not answer your question.
One of the control files used with the Geo Database is called:
GeoExtraCodes.txt..
First copy the file and name it GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt

Edit the GeoExtraCodes-Alt file and:
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AT THE TOP OF THE FILE!!!

What you want is the line that reads *USA|111| County
Just remove the * and file it...

This will now put the word County into you location when you use the Geo
Database.

There are many other options listed in these Geo control files

I hope this answers you question...

No opinion, just the facts...

Hi, I'm new here; just bought the program and am now getting familiar
with it.

When selecting or merging a location from the Geo database, is it
possible to choose an option that adds the word County after the
county name? Or is my only option to manually type it in?

In my previous genealogy program I always added County after county
names since so many county names are the same as city names. In some
reports it really helps to clarify this potential point of confusion.

Thanks for the help.

 Dennis,
I don't like to have lots of Master Sources, so I am like Jenny, in
that I don't necessarily fill in all the descriptive items, and I tend
to do like Richard, and use the person as the source, or in the
 detail.

In addition to others, I have six basic master sources called:
 Certificate/Record - Baptism
 Certificate/Record - Birth
 Certificate/Record - Confirmation
 Certificate/Record - Death
 Certificate/Record - Divorce
 Certificate/Record - Marriage

I might use one of these and in the Source Detail list something like:
Email KILKENNEY from Bill Surname to Susan Daily dated Oct 31, 2006
 8:35 PM.
I then place the entire body of the email into the Detail Text tab.

or instead, I will use the master source of
 Person - William Bill Surname
 and the detail of
Email Re: Presset St. Toledo OH - Kilkenny connection dated Dec 22,
 2006 3:57 PM.
and place the email into the Detail Text tab.

For posts, I tend to use the master source of
 Internet Web Site
 and the detail of
Rootsweb Leitrim Message Board post Re: Parochial registers of
Cloone, 1820-1927, Diocese of Ardagh by James Surname dated 11 Feb
2006 7:39 PM GMT (Posted at
 http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YWC.2ACI/5298...)
and I copy the entire post into the Detail Text tab.

You might think about using this last option, but changing the master
source from Internet Web Site to more specific ones like Rootsweb.com
 Message Board Post.

I have been more specific in my Master Source naming when I downloaded
a GEDCOM from Rootsweb's WorldConnect and exchanged correspondance
with the owner who told me where she obtained her information. In that
case I used the Master Source title of GEDCOM - McGovernNY by
Patricia Surname, her name as the author, the title of the GEDCOM as
the title, the type as GEDCOM, and under publication noted the last
update date, and the URL location of the tree.

My philosophy is a more easily managed (i.e. shorter) Master Source
 List.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy on shared drive

2007-02-14 Thread Allen Prunty
I have a Linksys network access storage point that I attached to my
router... it plugs into an Ethernet port and I can plug two USB hard drives
in it.

I have two 250mb hard drives plugged into it and have it set to mirror them
(one is exactly the same as the other). I mapped the first drive to Z: on
all computers.

On this drive live my digital photos, source documents and etc. Daily I
backup my laptop's legacy files to a folder called Leg-Backup and I name the
zip files 14-Feb-07.zip for the data and 14-Feb-07m for the media.

I keep the data files indefinitely... the media files I back up on
Wednesdays and I only keep a week of them.

I can't tell you how many times this filepile has saved my butt. My Laptop
was stolen once, damaged in a wreck once and I am on the third one... it
restored beautifully each time.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy on shared drive

Hello to all,

I joined this user group in November but this is the first time I have
posted. I have learned much from all of the questions and responses. Now I
need some advice from the many who have more expertise than I.

Due to a disability I have a PC but use my laptop more frequently. But
alas! Last week my laptop hard drive gave up the ghost, died, and I lost
everything I had not saved to, yes, floppies. My CD burner also was not
working. Not to despair, however. Although I lost all of my Legacy data,
it is still on paper. Both my mother and I had been doing genealogy
research since the pen and paper days. For the most part I had just been
entering data from the paper records and doing some online research to
verify. And I had printed most of the data I had found on line of
significance.

So, before I reinstall Legacy and begin again, I would like to know if any
of you have installed Legacy on a shared drive and how it worked for you.
In other words, I would install it on both my PC and my laptop, when I get
it back, in a shared situation so that what I enter on one computer would be
available on the other without carrying CDs or flash drives from one to the
other. By the way, I have as secure in-home wireless network for my
communication. This would be especially helpful since my scanner is
connected only to my PC but I can't spend much time at my PC on each
occasion.

Your opinions and words of wisdom are greatly appreciated.

Marcellyn Fowler

RE: [LegacyUG] Geo Database

2007-02-09 Thread Allen Prunty
Perhaps legacy can add a feature that will display county in the long
format if the user selects it. This way we all can have options. I would
also like the county verification that's built into legacy to adjust the
appropriate county for the time frame preserving that is entered. For
example... Scott, Tennessee, USA was actually Campbell county before 1750...
and before that it was part of north Carolina. It would be neat to have
ancestry automatically offer corrections for the appropriate time frames.

Allen, I appreciate your point of view on this issue. I'm aware of the
accepted format. I was asking about and proposing that Legacy give the
user the option of having county names entered with the word county
after them when using the Geo database. That way users would be free to
choose. The Geo database wouldn't have to have its core data changed to
do this--only the Geo program itself.

It's not a critical issue but I thought I'd ask the question just to be
sure I wasn't missing anything. You do bring up some valid points that
folks need to consider before using the word county. I may have to
rethink it myself! :-)
