Re: [LegacyUG] Book done by compiler, NOT author or editor

2009-09-17 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
I would put whatever name connected with the document (publisher, government
name), I can find and put in the field what I picked and why. Changing the
'category' would not help, because changing author to compiler will not be
documented, in a list of books, but  naming the author  'Bricks Publishing Co.
as compiler' will always note the variance. There will always be something that
refuses to fit organized rules.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Book done by compiler, NOT author or editor

I need to source a book which is clearly NOT done by an author or an editor,
per "Evidence Explained" (EE), by Elizabeth Shown Mills. (See 12.8, Author's
Role: Compiler or Author, page 668.)
Legacy's SourceWriter, however, ONLY allows me to enter an author or editor, if
I choose to use SourceWriter for a book.
Is there a way for me to override the text (change author/editor to compiler)
when Legacy shows the source?
I prefer to use EE and SourceWriter; so please let's NOT digress into
discussions as to perceived shortcomings of either.
Thank you,
Arnold

Simply chose whichever template seems most appropriate, assuming a known
editor and at the Master Source level you can override the Bibliography
to change the word "editor" to "compiler".
Then at Source Detail level you can override the Footnote/Endnote
citation to change "editor" to "compiler" there.

michele,
The book is "Protestant Marriages from Almonte & Region, Ontario
(1817-1943)."
It very clearly states, "Compiled by Peter Anderson."
Per EE, page 668, it does *none* of the things required to have the
status of "author." It does no more than show marriage names and
dates. This is not meant to be a put-down at all. It is over 370
pages of helpful information. I would like to show it as a compiled work

2009-09-17 Thread Michele Lewis

actually, you have to put it after the first name

It will print like this...

Anderson, Peter, compiler

Or, you could put "compiled by" in front of Anderson...

compiled by Anderson, Peter

Either way it will work

In the Picture Centre, find the relevant individual in the list on the
left. In the Attached Pictures section (middle/lower screen) highlight
the picture you want to remove. In the upper right section of the
screen, click on the Attached Pictures tab and you will see that

You will get a message that this picture will be UNLINKED from the

If you happen to have linked the same picture to 2 different
Individuals, the above procedure in Picture Centre will only unlink it
from one of those Individuals. If you happen to have linked the same
picture to ONE Individual twice (say as an Individual's Picture and as
an Event picture), the above procedure will only unlink one of those

I think I probably am expecting too much from the Legacy program and

I'm not sure what you want here. However, there are 4 lines on the Title
Page for the Descendant or Ancestor Reports and I have been able to enter
100 characters on each line. How much info to you need to put in the title?

You can certainly put a picture on the Title Page. Click on Title Page and

Yes, quite normal. All reports "default" to the person or couple on the
screen when you open the Report menu.

Sometimes I forget to change it. What difference does it make?

Whenever you select a Report to form a new chapter for your book it will
be based on the person showing as Current Person or the couple showing
as Current Couple. You may want the same person as the focus for every
chapter of the book, but you may not so you need to select the right
person or couple accordingly.

New pictures I just put in from the Picture Center started duplicating
again in the book. I called the book showing "photo 2" as a title so I
can get to the problem.

As requested before, you need to say where they are appearing and how
your book is made up. For example, what chapters/reports have you
included? Are the duplicates appearing all in the same chapter or in
different ones?

Could it be that you have selected 2 different reports which both
include the same picture. For example, you might make a book which
includes 2 chapters which both include Joe Bloggs and his photo will
appear in both chapters

The other book, Richard Ashby Johnson b 1927, only shows one picture

show on a page?

I wouldn't have thought so.

And where do I get to that (I forget easily? What am I not

Do you mean in a Picture Scrapbook as a chapter in a book? If so, it's
Edit Settings for Current Chapter... then Options.

If you are finding it difficult to remember how to do things, why not
write down the steps you take each time you do something new, such as
create a book? If you find something goes wrong you can change your
steps a little next time and once you have a set of instructions which
work you can keep them to use next time.

[LegacyUG] BOOK FORMAT QUESTIONS

2009-06-03 Thread Nina K. Johnson
When making a book, the names change at the top of the screen to the last
person I've gone to on the main Legacy screen. Is this right? Sometimes I
forget to change it. What difference does it make?

New pictures I just put in from the Picture Center started duplicating again
in the book. I called the book showing "photo 2" as a title so I can get to
the problem. The other book, Richard Ashby Johnson b 1927, only shows one
picture of my husband. Has it got something to do with the number of
pictures I show on a page? And where do I get to that (I forget easily?
What am I not understanding?

Also, could someone tell me HOW I get the individual picture screen to show
up to 25 pictures (cannot remember that either)? I have looked at the
Picture CD many times.

IDEA: Could the title of the book show somewhere on the Publishing Center
Page? I have about four now. It seems to take a long time to go back to
the SAVE AS page. How does that work?

  I am using Legacy 7.0.0.86

  I just used the SourceWriter book template; book, authored; author known;
basic format.

The resulting source citation is blank, except for the bibliography entry.

  Can anyone confirm this bug?

Hi Momalot66,

Yes you can. :-)

In the Publication Centre (Reports > Books/Other > Publication Centre)
there are options at the bottom on the right to specify your output type.

Choose "PDF File" then click on the Create button to create a PDF file.

Choose "Screen/Printer" then click on the Print button to print it on
your own printer.

The selections are much the same for any report you generate in Legacy -
you can view it on the screen, print it on your own computer, or create
a file in a format of your choice (note that not all formats are
available for all reports).

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

Yes, but it's difficult to make suggestions without knowing exactly what you
wish to do.

I would suggest that you look at the drop-down menu under the Report Tab, in
particular All Reports (Books and others) and the Publishing Centre. Also
remember that the Help button on each page is a context help which will take
you to the specific help for that page.

If you still have questions please come back with more details.

If you send a message in HTML instead of plain text, please do not resend
the message in plain text. That just increases the number of messages that
come through to the list and heaven knows it's busy enough as it is!

Listers might reply to either message so the whole thread continuity will be
lost.

And don't write "oops, I'm sorry I sent that last message in HTML". Again,
unnecessary. Just put a big sticky note on your monitor that says "LUG

[LegacyUG] Book publishing

2008-11-26 Thread Laurie Hicks
Hi

Can any one help me please, I am trying to print a book on my Ancestors, in
my first proof there was a lot of conflicting information, such as births
etc. I went to each person and changed the information so that looked like
it was fixed, yet, when I went and viewed the book that I wanted to print
the conflicting information still showed as being there, any help would be
greatly appreciated.

If you need to print before the next update is issued, I'd suggest
proofreading the preview *very* carefully before using up any amount of
ink

[LegacyUG] Book Source Citations and Bibliographies

2008-08-16 Thread Thomas Herson
I have created several books. I have selected that source citations and
bibliographies are printed for all the books.

Also, for each book I have opted to have the sources show as footnotes at
the end of each page.

One, and only one, of the books will not print the Bibliography (or show it
in the Table of Contents) when I have the sources shown as Footnotes. The
Bibliography will print for this one book when I opt to show the sources
after the last chapter.

Any idea why this is happening?

Thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] Book Report Length

2008-05-18 Thread Tom Kemp
They can test a sample book report by "printing" it out to the screen
instead of actually printing it out on paper. This way they can see how many
pages it will be etc. They can also see and adjust the page layout as well -
title, headers, footers etc. One thing they will want to look at is the
number of columns in the name index and if they want an index by geographic
locations to print out.
Give it a try.

However, I have 2 distant cousins who are working on one and I am trying to

One concern is the length of such a book ... we have no idea how long it might

My suggestion is to start with each of the Reports, especially the
Book Reports and get to know them and their options before
considering combining various Report types in the Publication centre.

The Save to PDF option (available in Legacy Deluxe) gives you what
you see in Print Preview in PDF format usually read by Adobe Reader.
The Save to RTF (Rich Text Format) option gives you a file you can
open and edit in your Word Processor. Only some of the formatting is
maintained. Note that pictures can be embedded or just the link
shown. See option on the Pictures tab in the Report Options.

The pictures will not be placed as they are in the Print Preview.
Also, if you want the pictures to travel to another computer with the
RTF file, you need to further embed them in the file. In Microsoft
Word 2003 you go to Edit> Links to save the picture in the document.

When you do come to the Publication centre, note that some decisions
are made for the whole book and others are specific to the "chapter"
(the report being used for this section of the book). See the
Additional and Options Tabs in the Publication Centre for the
elements that are decided for the whole book.

Re posting in Plain Text. I can't see what email program you are using.
See

This group requires plain text format for a variety of reasons. See the

To answer your other question, it is quite easy to create a Gedcom using
Legacy - see File>Export. You may also like to note that the Help Files on
each screen are context Help Files relating to that particular screen.

RE: [LegacyUG] Book

2008-01-11 Thread ronald ferguson

For Outlook please visit:
http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/msg11753.html

If that link doesn't give an answer that works for your version of Outlook then
visiting the LUG Archives (address at the tail of all email threads) and
inserting "Outlook" in the Search Box will give you loads of answers.

As far as AOL is concerned I'm sorry but I dumped them after 5 weeks of
testing, so I'm unable to help.

RE: [LegacyUG] Book printing orientation

2007-10-20 Thread Dan Deck
I thank everyone for their answers to this question. I see there are a
couple of ways to get around this, but I still see this as a short coming in
the program. I have worked in windows for years and have seen this
capability demonstrated in many programs. That is the ability to switch
orientation mid-stream through a document.
I hope the developers can add this as it should be something nice to see.

Dan

I don't think you can do it within Legacy - however, I haven't used the
Publishing Centre which allows you to combine charts and narratives. Don't
know if it let's you specify that the charts should be landscape for
instance. However, if you create an RTF file you can divide your book into
sections (Insert > Section > Next Page) and then alter the page orientation
for a single section. Of course, you have to insert another section break
at the end of the page / pages you want in landscape. Just make sure, when
you change the page set up that you have the cursor in the section you want
changed, and that you choose 'This section' in the dialogue box so it
doesn't change the orientation for the whole document.

Jan

Orientation doesn't affect page size - only layout. It is quite common to
have most pages in portrait (higher rather than wide) and occasional pages
landscape (wider rather than high) so you can, for example, fit a wider
table or chart across the page. The book has to be turned to read those
pages, but all pages are the same size.

Choosing a landscape orientation does affect the whole book but, if
you use publishing Centre you can specify"placeholder pages " that
mean that you can publish your book using normal orientation using
these placeholder pages and then go back and print your charts using
landscape orientation...means you have to go through all that you
have printed off and remove your placeholder pages and substitute
them with the right charts but the end result is a publication that
holds both orientations...you just have to do them in different stages.
In most cases, selecting a smaller print size for pedigree charts and
not including all dates will eliminate most printing problems...you
can make these changes using the report options of Pedigree but in
some cases, especially with a full chart the printing seems to
overlap a bit. I would also welcome suggestions on this item.My
solutions is to not print as many generations. 5 generations appears
to be the max. but would like to be able to do 6. Does anyone have any
ideas?

Err.. I've never seen a book with two different size pages in it.
I'd consider it strange if the orientation *didn't* affect the whole
book.

Maybe a custom paper size of 11" x 11"... then orientation wouldn't
matter

HI All,
I am a recent convert from Family Tree Maker and have a couple of
questions.

1. I have seen that when you choose a report type, say a pedigree, you
can
change the orientation to landscape. But this setting seems to affect
the whole
book and all the pages come out in landscape then. Some reports would
be better

displayed as portrait and others of the book landscape.

2. Also while I am on the subject of pedigree charts, there doesn't
seem to be a
way to exclude out certain fields so that the boxes don't overlap and
the

writing doesn't overlap, which it seems to do.

Thanks

Hi all. I found a digitised version of a book on the internet and am
confused about recording the details for a new Master Source.

The web site is AmericanSouth.Org <http://www.americansouth.org/index.php>

After performing a search, it takes you to another page which says:

Title: Reminiscences [electronic resource] / by Emory Fiske Skinner.
Archive: Florida Center for Library Automation - Florida Heritage
   Collection
   URL: http://purl.fcla.edu/fcla/dl/WF0020.pdf

"Electronic reproduction. [Florida] : State University System of
Florida, PALMM Project, 2000. (Florida heritage collection)"

The actual document is at
<http://fulltext10.fcla.edu/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=fhp&idno=WF0020&format
=pdf>

At the Progenealogists.com they say you enter a citation for a book that's
published online like this:

Book author, book title, page number cited (Online: Online publisher,
online published date) [Original published original publisher name,
original publish date], , web page access date.

In this particular case, who would I enter as the online publisher and whose
URL would I add? AmericanSouth.Org, Florida Center for Library Automation -
Florida Heritage Collection, or Florida - State University System of
Florida? Or would you quote all of the above organisations and all the URLs?

Is the Type, Electronic (like they say in the Title), or a Book?

Is the Repository what they give as the archive (Florida Center for Library
Automation), or AmericanSouth.Org?

Does it make a difference in the way you enter the author whether the pages
are the actual pages or a transcription?, i.e. Author: Emory Fiske Skinner,
transcribed by .

I hope these questions aren't too stupid. Any advice would be appreciated!

Finally, does anyone know if the new Legacy v7 source templates will include
fields for entering WHERE you actually find source data?

Cheers,
Christine

To the many Legacy uses:

A lot of you have waited for Elizabeth Mills "Evidence Explained" book.
There are other books out there that are as good or even better. Please
do not take me wrong Elizabeth Mills books are great I have two of hers.
And I have ordered her latest book. I have not received it yet.

The one book I refer to has templates that will handle 99% of any
source material you would find the the realm of family history is a 116
page notebook called "Family History Documentation Guideline" Second
edition. It is put out by the Silicon Valley Computer Genealogy Group.
Their web site is; http://www.svpafug.org

The price of the book $13.50. This has been one of the best hided
secrets of genealogy that I have discovered.

To Christine Pearce you will find --You will find how to source your
book on page 53 Its under title: Book compiles from other sources.
Its in Chapter Four Source Entry Examples.

[LegacyUG] Book published online advice and Legacy 7 template query

2007-09-02 Thread Christine Pearce
Hi all. I found a digitised version of a book on the internet and am
confused about recording the details for a new Master Source.

The web site is AmericanSouth.Org

After performing a search, it takes you to another page which says:

Title: Reminiscences [electronic resource] / by Emory Fiske Skinner.
Archive: Florida Center for Library Automation - Florida Heritage
   Collection
   URL: http://purl.fcla.edu/fcla/dl/WF0020.pdf

published online like this:

Book author, book title, page number cited (Online:  Online publisher,
online published date) [Original published original publisher name,
original publish date], , web page access date.

In this particular case, who would I enter as the online publisher and whose

Florida Heritage Collection, or Florida – State University System of

Thanks Cathy, Found the option to include child status, will report the
lack of inclusion in the comment section & hopefully footnotes will be
included in version 7.

If in the Child Status, then you need to include Child Status in the

See the Include Tab of the Report Options.

Comments in the Compiler information?
They don't appear to be included. I'm not sure whether this is by
design. Why not put in a bug report or suggestion re this?
A work around: The compiler information is printed as a one line
footer - if you've ticked the option to include. If you put your
comment in the Address section it prints.

Re: [LegacyUG] Book-Descendant report problem with creating PDF or RTF format

2006-12-20 Thread WILLIAM HATHAWAY
And I thank Bob for pointing this out. I tried but never could figure out
this "mistake" or user "problem." If it's in the hardcopy Users Guide, I
could not search it out. In that case, I ignored the bumper sticker:
"JWRTM". Otherwise, I would characterize it as a "bug, not a feature."
Never saw such behavior in other interfaces. But then I live with
"workarounds", so am pleased to now be able to make printouts of .txt, .rtf,
etc. of all the reports.I can proofread (and directly edit) such things.
No matter how hard I look, I always miss something on the screen. I think
it has to do with how the human eye processes vision. The first thing the
retina does after catching the photons is to do a two-dimensional double
differential (delta function squared) - or the mathematical equivalent -
filter two slightly separated Gaussian functions - over the scene. This
detects lines and edges - preprocessing the image before the signal even
passes through the optic nerve to the visual part of the brain. A paper
hard copy will move around -either by hand holding and/or by the natural
rapid eye shifting of they eye. A immobile computer screen does not have
this 'real world' motion. (All this developed so that we could detect
predators or prey with surface edges against the grassy or forest
background - a necessity for any creature with sight, not just us
primates..) I wonder how newspaper proofreaders do this on screen. My
time to google.

Thanks again,
Wm. H.

2006-07-21 Thread Peter Haughton
Lyall

If somone else is doing the final editing for the book,
then I am going to suggest what you need to do to
make it easier for whoever that is.
Do NOT use Create it as Text file. You cannot really
just use a simple file.
DEFINITELY use Create as Rich Text File.
This will have a number of advantages for your editor.
If you are going to edit this file yourself before you
pass it to your editor, then you will have to use a
proper Word Processor such as Microsoft Word or
Word Perfect. When you do edit it, be careful not to
delete any of the formatting codes that will surround
names and superscripts. Some of these are used by
the Index generation facilities in the word processor
program. Make sure that your editor is aware that
both a Contents and an Index to the people in your
report can be generated from the codes supplied by
Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Book report problem again

2006-07-21 Thread Cathy

Hi Lyall,

Rich Text file is a format that holds formatting that can be opened
in any Word Processor. eg Microsoft Word or Open Office or Word Perfect ...

If you are wanting to produce a book and be able to edit it, you're
better off using the RTF option than plain text. With the RTF option,
you can also have the codes for indexing embedded.
The see the codes, you need to turn on viewing Hidden text in your
Word Processor. You'll probably not want to see them ;-)
Directions to produce the Index are included in the RTF file. You
need to use the relevant Menu in your Word Processor to produce the Index.

Cheers,
Cathy

Rich text (rtf) can be opened in Word Pad (which is usually included on most
computers) and more sophisticated word processors such as Word (Office) and
Open Office. Just treat Word Pad as an improved version of Note Pad. Unless
you have some fairly expensive gear it is not possible to edit pdf's. So
best bet - save as rtf and open in word pad (you can open rtf's inNote Pad
but you will loose the formatting).

have a lot of large families to do.

I see they are there in a pdf file, but I can`t seem to be able to alter
that.
Also they are there in HTML or Rich text, but I don`t know what to do with
those types of files.

So really just need a simple file such as a text file that I can alter to
suit.

With many Thanks
Lyall

RE: [LegacyUG] Book Report problem

2006-07-21 Thread Peter Haughton
Lyall, to help to try to reproduce this, can you say
What version of Legacy and Deluxe or not.
You don't say how you are "create"ing the report. Do you
mean printing it on a printer?
If so, does it occur when you produce a text, HTML or
a Rich Text File instead of printing it?
If you have Deluxe, does this problem occur when you
produce a PDF file version instead of printing it?

[LegacyUG] Book Report problem

2006-07-20 Thread Lyall Mitchell
Hello,

I have just rejoined the Group as I seem to have a problem.

I want to make a Descendant Report where it shows the line back to the first
person.
When I preview it-the names are there in brackets and italics with numbers
etc-but when it creates the report it leaves them out. I have tried each
different way and it just leaves the "back to starting line out'
Can anyone help please?
With Thanks
