[LegacyUG] Source template conversion tool

2009-08-11 Thread Laura Taylor-Hanson

I have the following version of Legacy deluxe version 7.0.0.100. In the Legacy
User Guide on page 72, it explains how to convert your basic style master
source citations to the Sourcewriter template. I have tried to follow the
instructions in the book but am unable to locate the Source Template Conversion
Tool from the Master source list options button. I am stumped. Can someone help
with some basics on how to accomplish this task?

Thanks, Laura

Legacy never completed a source conversion tool but a very nice one is
available from a 3rd party.
See:

I have been using it on dozens of old style sources.

I also was one of these people hunting for the Source conversion tool for
the longest (after reading about it in the manual), just to find out that it
wasn't implemented yet. Unfortunately Millennia didn't chose a fairly simple
solution by adding an itme in the Tool menu Source Conversion Tool and
when you click on it, giving a short explanation that it is not implemented
yet and will be done in a later upgrade. It would have saved a lot of time
for a lot of people. It's still not to late to add this temporary message in
the next update, because we see this question is coming up over and over.

You can't help but be aware that the Source Conversion Tool was a primary
reason many people switched to Legacy. I hope that every effort is being
made to get this tool done and made available to owners of Legacy Family

Mike,

I'm an ex-TMG user myself. You're gonna love Legacy!

I find just showing the Citation Previews in the Add Source Detail screen

It's SO much easier than TMG and as flexible as it needs to be. Good luck.

I have been trying (unsuccessfully up to this point) to access the Source

Both the help system and the user manual instruct me to open the Master

Options for Non-Sources...

And that's it.  If anyone can enlighten me as to what stupid thing I'm doing

How de know that what you ultimately come up with reagrding the source
converter will match the instructions for its use which is found in the
printed user manual and the on-line help screens?

I really think that more programmers needs to be hired to bring the source
converter to reality and to fix the dozens and dozens of problems that
currently exist. In the absence of something like that, I can see the
software and the company going down the drain. There are just too many
problems and too many required work-arounds to accomplish things.

Template Conversion Tool to convert a bunch of basic-type sources from my
initial data import to the Sourcewriter format.

Both the help system and the user manual instruct me to open the Master Source
List, click the Options button, and then choose the Source Template Conversion
Tool from the submenu. The problem is that I am not seeing that menu option on
the submenu. When I click the Options button, I see:

Delete Master Source
Tag/Exclude Options...
Change Surety Settings...
Combine Duplicates...
Purge Unused...
Import Lists...
Print...
Zoom...
Options for Non-Sources...

And that's it. If anyone can enlighten me as to what stupid thing I'm doing
that is keeping me from seeing the Source Template Conversion Tool option, I
would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Mike D.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Template Conversion Tool?

2008-08-29 Thread Jennifer Trahan

Mike,

I've spoken with the support desk and other Legacy users, and it will not be
ready until a future update. In the meantime, I am converting my sources
without it. I think if you are a splitter vs. a lumper, the SourceWriter
Conversion Tool will not help much anyhow. I was a major splitter, creating a
master source for every death record and whatnot. Therefore, I don't think I
can convert most of my old master sources, b/c they are not true master
sources. By the way, if you are unfamiliar with the terms splitting and
lumping there are extensive discussions on them in the archives.

Thanks Jennifer and Keith,

That explains why I couldn't find it. I was beginning to think I was losing my
mind...

I've been a TMG user for a couple of years now, and although I have found it to
be an incredibly flexible program, I have been getting increasingly frustrated
with the micro-management that it often requires to complete even mundane
tasks. As I said earlier, I'm only a couple of days into Legacy, but I believe
I'm going to find it to my liking.

Thanks again,

2008-06-14 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
Here's another thought that might work for some folks. If you still have
Legacy 6 on your computer and have 2 copies of your database (one in Legacy
6 format and one in version 7 format):

Start Legacy 6 and open the old database
Also start Legacy 7 and open the new database
(If you have 2 monitors, you can put one on one screen and the other on the
other screen. Otherwise just adjust your windows accordingly.)
Now you can see your old sources in version 6 and copy/paste from them to
the new setup in Legacy 7.

Now I see the question. Tom asked about having the *Master Source
Definition* window open at the same time. I don't think you can do that
because there's no Add a New Source button on that screen. To revert to
the original question which was how to do the conversion manually. If you
are on either the Master Source List window or an Assigned Sources window
you have the option to click Add a New Source which will bring up the
Source Writer window if you have that option turned on. If you resize
that window smaller you can be see both at the same time. I may have said
it wrong the last time. If you go as far as the Master Source Definition
window you've gone too far.

I don't think you mean *open* a Master Source. You have to click on
*Edit* actually to open an existing source to view it and once you do
that you cannot access the screen behind it where the Add button is.

However, I think what you mean is highlight the old Master Source and
then click the Add button. I think it needs to be stressed that you
must have the Output tab of the old Source to the fore with the Show
Entire Source radio button selected in order to see everything that you
might want to copy over.

It's also a good idea to reposition and/or resize the old Master
Source window before clicking on Add, so that the new window can be
arranged to give you full visibility of the Output section of the other
window.

The point is that for the Master Source, this is not a merge process
but a replacement process.
It's only the source details that are brought over. Note these aren't
merged either if for the same person, same event you had both sources
cited, you'll have two citations of the one Master source perhaps
with different source detail depending on what you'd added to each.

I am sure I am being incredibly dense, but I can't locate the Source
Template Conversion Tool (in Master Source List Options, according to
 the
 manual).

I have the SourceWriter System switched on in Customise.

Yes, it does seem to matter which source is merged into the other one. The
old source needs to be merged into the new one.

Add the new source with the template.
Combine the old source with the new source. The new source will have
a bullet beside it,indicating that it was generated with the Source
Template.
I don't think it matters which one you choose first when you are
combining. The progam recognizes the source created with the new
template.
Verify that your Source Details are accurate.
I have converted several of my sources this way and everything has
been handled beautifully by Legacy. The source detail stayed where it
belonged, with the appropriate person.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Template Conversion Tool

2008-06-09 Thread Dede Holden
The good news is:
Once you've added the new version of your source, you can combine the
old source with the new one and Legacy keeps the new source. The
bullet beside the source in the Master Source list lets you know which
sources have been written with the new Source Writer. I've made the
change for several of my sources that had multiple citations with
different Source Details for each and all have been handled properly
by Legacy. I'm sure I don't have as many sources as many of you, but
I'm finding it helpful to do this conversion manually, since it forces
me to look at each source and rethink my citations.

It also helps to generate some of your favorite reports and see how
the source citations are handled. You can see what needs to be
fixed.

[LegacyUG] Source Template Conversion Tool

2008-05-23 Thread Thomas Herson
I want to use the Source Template Conversion Tool. On page 72 of the Legacy
User Guide it says:

The Source Template Conversion Tool is reached from the Master Source List
by clicking the Options button and then choosing Source Template Conversion
Tool on the submenu.

There is no item for the Source Template Conversion Tool on the submenu.

I am using version 7.0.0.38. Why can't I find the tool?

Thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Template Conversion Tool

2008-05-23 Thread Cathy

The Manual has a lot longer lead time than the program itself.

Manuals can be helpful so long as you realise they are always out of
date and contain some hopes which aren't realised as well as some
prototypes of features that are more fully developed in the released
program. You'll note that some screen shots are different to the way
the screens appear now.

The Help file is always more up to date but that also isn't perfect -
especially when the programmers are working hard on the features and
bugs rather than the documentation at the moment.

It was the Legacy staff trying this that led to it at least being
delayed. The beta testers haven't seen a conversion tool at all.
