Geoff, I really don't mean to add to the flames but beyond everything else that has been said there was a problem with their mic picking up their breath sounds like they were in a wind outdoors. But on the positive side, I have heard worse and it was definitely worth the price of admission! Larry On Wed, Apr 4, 2012 at 9:25 PM, Judy Bingham wrote: > Whew! Re: [LegacyUG] Reminder - Webinar Wednesday
Thanks, Michele. I was just trying to compare & contrast the two processes, and was frustrated at what I found (or didn't) at the ICAPGen website. I knew about the videos, but didn't want that much detail / couldn't spend that much time as a first step. I have checked the BCG website and found information at a better level. It gave me an idea of the amount of time required after just two clicks. And I have been keeping track of your posts regarding mismatches between what Legacy can do and what certification requires in the area of source citations. ;) I am also going to pursue training now offered online by the DAR this year. Perhaps it could count toward the 1000 hours? ;) And I think it was more than just a shared headset; it sounded like they had not practiced or something. --Paula From: Michele Lewis To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Wed, April 4, 2012 5:13:41 PM Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Reminder - Webinar Wednesday One thing I will say about ICAPGen, watch the mentoring videos! That was my point: This one was not up to the usual "awesome-ness" of Legacy webinars. ;) --Paula From: Linda Hauley To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Wed, April 4, 2012 5:05:11 PM Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Reminder - Webinar Wednesday Paula: I agree with you wholeheartedly about your assessment of today’s webinar. I have completed my requirements for my certification at the National Institute of Genealogical Studies here in Canada and was looking for more wisdom on transitioning from a Hobbyist to a Professional. Obviously a lot of what was talked about from a business perspective did not interest me for two reasons: 1. I’m in Canada and everything was based on US requirements (there were only a few similarities) and 2. I am an accountant too so I know what is required business-wise. This webinar was not up to the usual standards of Legacy’s previous ones I’ve attended! Sorry, Geoff!! Linda J. I had mixed feelings about today's webinar. The material was covered too fast for me to take notes (which is one way I learn) -- but I will get the information when I watch it again later. But it also felt a little bit unprofessional, ironically. They didn't explain each slide... well, one in particular I didn't know what the columns or rows had to do with each other, and they didn't verbally introduce the slide at all, then bounced around the items on the screen. (I'll try to figure that out later.) In the end, though, I was excited about the possibility of moving toward "professional" in my genealogy journey. So, I felt I was ready enough to take the next baby step and look at the two websites for accreditation/certification. I selected ICAPGen.org first. Sure, the layout looks simple, but they don't really explain things for a beginner. I felt I had to infer a lot... like, you get accredited for a region, because the first thing they show you on the website is maps of the regions. Trying to keep this short... The description of the process to get accredited is VERY wordy and NOT straightforward. There is no flow chart, for example. Then I opened the application form and saw there are 1000 hours of education/experience required which was not listed in the description of the process. I don't know where to start. SO I think a webinar on how to get accredited "for dummies" would be great. I haven't looked at the BCG website yet, but I would think there would be two webinars - one for each process/organization. Or maybe one webinar split between the two and kept at the really high level. I especially did not like how the presenter today avoided answering the question about what the difference is between the two processes. I think she should've been able to describe them at a high level at least, professionally & without partiality (if that's what she was worried about). She left it to us to "read the websites" which you know by now I don't think is very easy to do. Okay, perhaps I'm rambling now. [LegacyUG] Search List Question
Thanks to all for the advice so far. When I am going through my 1911 possibles, some are found and some are not. Those who are found get a 1911 Census source citation. When I rebuild the search list, I untag those who have a 1911 Census citation and then search for all tagged. This new list includes everyone I have not yet checked, plus everyone who was checked and not found. I want to restart at the person who would originally have been next in line, so I open the search list and navigate to the right person, double-click them and they appear. When I have done with them, I hit F3 (find next) and the second person on the list appears, instead of the person next to the one I've just processed. If this is a bug, it should be fixed. If it is by design, we need some way of telling Legacy to set this person as the current in the list. It would also be nice to have a "Save/Restore Search List" facility. This would just need to be a comma-separated list of RIN's or MRIN's with an "*" to show the current position. If I can't do what I need, I'll put in a suggestion but I don't want to waste Support's time if I'm missing something. RE: [LegacyUG] Reminder - Webinar Wednesday
One thing I will say about ICAPGen, watch the mentoring videos! They explain the entire process VERY well. I agree with you that their website doesn’t go into much detail but trust me, the videos do. On the video that explains how to fill out the application step by step, they tell you exactly where to find those 1000 hours J The BCG has an application manual and a standards manual that explains their process in depth. I turned in my portfolio for the BCG in Feb. I am just waiting to hear. If I passed, I will then work on the AG because the AG requirements are quite different. Even though I am an experienced researcher, I learned a lot going through the BCG process and I expect I will learn even more going through the ICAPGen process. One interesting thing (and this relates directly to Legacy), when you do the BCG portfolio you will not be able to print out Legacy reports to use. They will never meet the criteria for a BCG report. You have to hand type all of the components (but like I said, I learned a lot doing so). You can do quite a bit of copying and pasting. That is why I had to make sure all my sources were formatted correctly in Legacy so that I could just copy and paste them as needed. With ICAPGen it is a little different. You will be able to use Legacy to print out the pedigree chart, family group sheets and research calendar but you will most likely will have to hand type the report that goes with it though. (The BCG portfolio doesn’t include pedigree charts, family group sheets or a research calendar). Part of the problem with the Webinar was the two speakers having to share one headset. It's just that I was so excited, but within the first 5 minutes of looking at that website, I was disheartened. RE: [LegacyUG] Reminder - Webinar Wednesday
Paula: I agree with you wholeheartedly about your assessment of today’s webinar. Linda J. Diane, I can't say that I've much of a clue either! I would take a look at Options>Customise>Launch and see if anything has been stuck in the alternative to Adobe Acrobat box. Even if nothing has, I would add your location for Adobe Acrobat. It shouldn't do any harm and may just work! Tersa: To get your event pictures to print: 1. Go to Descendatn Narrative or Descendants Report, 2. Select Report Options at Bottom of window 3. Select the INCLUDE Tab at top, then make sure you include Event Information, Events for marriage and Event Pictures selected 4. RE: [LegacyUG] Problem Creating a PDF file
Mike, I've created many PDF files in the past, many still filed under My Documents. I went to several of those documents and they opened just fine. Today I followed the steps I normally take; e.g., request a pdf file / give the file a name, and I'm then prompted as to whether to view the document or not. I click "yes" but the document is empty. I also just clicked on my Adobe Acrobat icon on my desktop to see if I could launch the FGS from there. All documents I've created in Adobe are listed and the ones I created today still do not open - but all others created before today do. Suggestions? Re: [LegacyUG] Questions about Sorting and Printing
Ron, Thanks, the sorting feature works! Why did I never think to Right click there? Ok, Photos for events. For events, I click on the person of interest so it shows the list of Events/Facts. I add the Event/Fact, and add the photo in the "edit event" form. I set one as preferred (I only have one or two that have more than one photo per event). I then go to Reports. Select All Reports Select Publishing Center Add in Descendant Book Report or Descendant Narrative. Select Preview. The only pictures displayed in the preview are the primary person, the Events never show up. Both data and photo are missing. So let's say I choose just "Descendant Narrative" from the reports. I go to options. Event pictures isn't even an option to select. And again, the Events do not print, nor do the photos. I have played with other reports as well, and not a single one of them seems to include events or their photos. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. As for the version, I have Legacy 7.5, Deluxe edition. Teresa (Who just discovered her Gr Gr Grandfather married a 2nd time. Secrets! HA! LOL.) In a message dated 4/4/2012 12:37:42 P.M. Re: [LegacyUG] Chronological marriage list
Ltools "Sort All Children" will look at each marriage record with children linked and only sort those families where every child has a birthdate. The benefit is that it can scan through the entire database and do all marriages in one sweep that fit that criteria instead of browsing to each one and doing the "Children's Settings" and then "Sort". I ran it on my large database that has over 86000 marriages and it did a great job on all those that had the birthdates entered for every child in the family. By the way, Ron Ferguson is right...these Ltools questions should be asked on the Ltools site because it is not a Millennia Corp program. Re: [LegacyUG] Questions about Sorting and Printing
Teresa, You do not say which version of Legacy, nor whether deluxe, so if my suggestions do not work properly please come back giving these details. To sort the kids in order of birthdate: In Family View with the parents in the main boxes, right click on one of the Kids, select ‘Settings’ and then ‘Sort’. Do note, however, that all kids without a birthday will appear at the start of each list. You will need to do this for every family where they kids are not in date order. Photos for Events: Yes they have to be attached to the Event and the Event will need to be in the report. Only the picture selected as ‘preferred’ will be published for each Event. But where are you trying to enter them? It has occurred to me that you may mean the Chart, in which case I don’t think you can. For the Narrative Report, select ‘Report Options’ and in the ‘Include’ tab the appropriate Events. Then in the ‘Pictures’ tab the picture sizes etc. Note: If you are using an old version of Legacy then it may not include Legacy Charting. This is available in Legacy 7.5, and I think in the Basic version, which will allow pictures in the Wall Chart. Depending on how you intend to print the chart, it may be too big for a large family. Basically, these functions order the birth and marriage events en-mass instead of having the user visit each family and sorting each group sheet separately. Try the GenViewer. How does Ltools handle families where you know the birth order but not the birth dates? Will it leave children with no birth dates in the order that they are listed in Legacy? As to the draft registration cards, I think they were published at 3 separate times and the forms were not local forms but "federal forms." In upper right corner of screen, select Options; select Show List. This should give you a list of all individuals who have an event with a KY location. At the bottom of this screen, select an unused Individual Tag #, say #3, and select Tag Everyone in List. Now all individuals with a KY location should be tagged #3. 3. Now, select Reports, Family; set the Report Options; click on Record Selection; Select Individuals with tag #3. Yes. I watched Geoff Rasmussen's video live, but I think it said available up to the 12th? But I can't explain it, because I watched that video writing notes changing my places for his, and haven't tried access yet. Waiting for one of my states, only one of which is Indiana. My brain is waking up so hear goes. The instructions said that knowing the 1930 address is a good start, because the Enumeration Districts changed, but if you know the 1930 address is still where your family in both 1930 and 1940 Hooray. The tools that were posted helped you to use the address or the city. It had all the EDs? with attached maps of same. It showed the multiple portions of a city, and streets are visible to help. (If you actually know the place). I saw the photo of the house my ggrandfather built in Chicago circa 1902. I had already had that but it verified (to me) it worked fine. Re: [LegacyUG] Search List Question
Print the whole list (with RINs). Then cross off the paper list to get a better handle what you actually have. Not sure about the 'first entry' being workable? Rich in LA CA From: Tony Rolfe To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Tuesday, April 3, 2012 8:45 PM Subject: [LegacyUG] Search List Question Is there a way to create a search list and start using the list from somewhere other than the first entry? I have created a list of people who might be alive for the 1911 census (Thanks census tool) by tagging on tag 1. I spent some time researching these folk and went about half way through. Then I needed to create a different search list and, when I had finished with that, I went back to look at the 1911 census. I recreated the list from the tags but can only start at the beginning. Even if I browse the list, double-click the person I want to start with, deal with them, when I so a "find next", it goes to the second person on the list. At the moment I have to start at the beginning, "Find Next" through a few hundred people to get where I want to be. Any advice would be appreciated. Re: [LegacyUG] Detail fields of 1940 census
IMHO the actual address is more important than the order the taker walked the block that day. But I haven't seen the instructions from the Feds yet for the 1940 census. I can wait a few days until I finally get on. Outside of Legacy. Legacy at this time only sorts dates within 'the SAME place' and SAME total name. Sort of useless. To create a marriage list I use the menu 'View > Marriage List' , also 'CTRL+M'. The only sorting options available, as far a I can tell, is by: - MRIN - Husband - Wife by selecting the appropriate button in the top of the window. Under options, there is one more, 'Sort by given name, surname' and vice versa. So where do I look to sort by date? Re: [LegacyUG] Search List Question
Tony, As I am sure you realise, your problem is that you abandoned the first search in order to create a second. Should it not be possible for you to untag the individuals already visited, as suggested by Chuck, then it is not possible to do as you wish. However, what I am less clear about is why you cannot just make a note of the name you are up to when you leave it to do the second search, and on return to this tagged list just go down to this name and start from there?
