RE: [LegacyUG] syncronizing two computers

2014-02-09 Thread Alan Pereira
You could SyncToy do synchronise the files from you Laptop to the Router's
memory stick and from the PC to the router's memory stick.
Personally I use SyncToy and a portable hard drive.

Not to highjack this thread, but wireless router was mentioned.
My wireless router has a port for a memory stick, which I use to transfer files
between 3 computers.
Could I keep my family file in my routers memory stick, to sink my desktop and
laptop?
I assume it would operate like dropbox, shouldn't work on one, while the other
is open.
  Thanks

 Hi Wendy,

Many thanks for the info. I have never used Dropbox but it sounds like
exactly what I need to be sure both computers have the same data on them. Your
instruction are very clear so I should be able to follow them correctly. The
laptop is only turned on about every two weeks in order to download any
Microsoft updates. I use a wireless router to connect the laptop to the
 internet.

If you do this, be very, very careful with the way you set up security on the
router. The memory stick (thumb drive, flash drive whatever...) is usually
treated as a network drive and can be accessed from the other side of the router
i.e. the big, bad Internet world with all its' hackers.

[LegacyUG] Copy Role Sentences

2014-02-09 Thread Ron Bernier
The default event sentences in Legacy tend to sound mechanical when
viewing in reports. The default event sentences sound even worse for
sharees. In order to create a more pleasant read, I am modifying the
default sentences.

Is there any way to make a copy of a role with the modified sentences
and then just change the name of the role, rather than having to copy
each of the eight sentences one by one from a modified role to a new
role? I.E. I have modified the sentences in Role A. I would like to
make a copy of Role A and rename it Role B.

Re: [LegacyUG] v800-397 Internet

2014-02-09 Thread Brian/Support
Mike's comment about IE is not entirely true. The Legacy Home tab uses
the Internet Explorer (IE) engine which is built into Windows so
anything in that tab which uses the internet such as displaying the
Legacy News and the links in the support section open the links in IE.
Any election by the user to open a link on those web pages in a new
window (via the right click menu) will open IE to display the site.

Legacy does use your default browser to:

a. View web page files on your computer after you create them;
b. Internet Search Internet or Search Search Internet; and
c. The link to the Legacy Home page on the Internet ribbon.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendants report

2014-02-09 Thread Wendy Howard
Hi Derek,

Do you get two copies of everything you print, or just this one report?

My printer gets set to automatically print two copies if I choose to
print two copies of something as the job is being sent to the printer in
my accounting program. No idea if that setting sticks with other
programs, as it's only there that I sometimes need two copies of a
single invoice and I don't want to use the 'normal' invoice printing
route where I can specify the number of copies earlier in the routine.
When I do print this way, I have to remember to change it back to
printing one copy with the next printing job, and all is fine again. I
don't always remember!

Hope this helps. :-)

I've got numerous cases where the Descendant has 2+ spouses,

likely to be mentioned in the obit, but she nearly
disappears in the narratives.

And when the Original Progenitor has a late-in-life 2nd

Manually moving those ladies around is tedious; and some of

RE: [LegacyUG] Copy Role Sentences

2014-02-09 Thread CE WOOD
I totally agree It is an incredible pain! When you find the combination
that sounds good to you there definitely needs to be a way to do this.

I hope Legacy will incorporate this soon. Please send as a suggestion. I have
done so several times for Legacy 7.5 but had no response, and, obviously,
Legacy did nothing about it.

I have not upgraded yet because there are still too many bugs, and I really
have other things I must do besides enter material twice keep two Legacy
programs up to date, which I would have to do to have the reports and sharing
that I do.

Anyway, since Legacy no longer accepts suggestions for Legacy 7.5, I have sent
them a suggestion to incorporate your suggestion in Legacy 8. However, it may
take a while before they get around to suggestions.

Right clicking anywhere in the childs area will return add a brother and add
a sister among other choices. I do not see a plus, but there is a logo that
displays the screen by which you can sort order, select child status, and edit
each child, among other things. I had never seen that logo before.
When you have an empty slot, clicking there returns add or link to a child,
among other options.

When you have set the display for full screen, 6 children can be added, but
with partial screen selected you only get 5 per column.

able to copy customized sentences from one role to another role within the
same event.

Using the Residence event as an example - I create a Role : Son - in order

[LegacyUG] Legacy unable to recognize file

2014-02-09 Thread Pat Hickin
I do not understand this. I have two main databases: one my paternal
side; the other my maternal side.

I recently updated to Legacy 8. I imported both files separately and
saved each to a new name, which I'll call Leg8PAT and LEG8MAT.

Now Legacy can find LEG8MAT but it cannot find LEG8PAT. Why? (I can find
both.) And what should I do?

Thanks,
Pat

Re: [LegacyUG] One Direct Line Report

2014-02-09 Thread Jane Sarles
Thank you Brian. I tried that. It does just give only the ancestor
from me to the oldest one. I guess there is no report of the type I am
looking for.

Jane

Tools Relationship will open the relationship calculator.

Select you on the left and the ancestor on the right.
Print will give you a graphical report with only the line between you
 and that ancestor.

The report formats I try seem to give all my ancestors. I only want the
one that relates me to this person. I tried the lineage, I tried the
Multiple Lines of Descent (couldn't figure that one out, just ended up
 with gigo).

I just need the connection be between myself and a particular ancestor
(the farthest back one of that line) and all those people in betwen. Is
there a report that will do that? I do hope I have made myself understood.

 Thanks for any assistance.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy unable to recognize file

2014-02-09 Thread Bob Austen
Hi Pat,

I’m not quite sure what you did by “importing” the Legacy 7 files. Once you
have upgraded to v8 and try to open a v7 file you will be asked if you want to
convert it, with the option of making a copy.

However, if you can find the LEG8PAT.fdb using file explorer then you should be
able to find it with Legacy. Go to File/Open, navigate to the folder where
LEG8PAT.fdb can be found, click on the file, and click on Open.

Perhaps you were clicking on the blue L in the upper left corner – this
normally shows the recent files opened, and there is a chance that you had not
actually opened the second file?? Navigate as above, making sure the file has
an .fdb extension.
