Re: [LegacyUG] Entering Unknown People

2014-02-23 Thread Wendy Howard
If all I know is the person's first name, that is all I enter. I don't
put 'unknown' or any variant of that in the surname field.

If I later find out more, I create an AKA with appropriate sources, and
then swap it for the current name.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Best to leave all unknown fields blank. For dates, a good guess based on
birth years of parents or children or spouse or marriage date will help
when doing merges.

"Unknown" wastes ink when printing and looks terrible to me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering Unknown People

2014-02-23 Thread Boyd Miller
This is my approach to people whose names are not known.
In the absence of a name Legacy sometimes adds a non-person called
“Unknown”. To distinguish from this, my choice is usually to put “not
known“ in the given name field. You can find these not known "people"
from a Given Name sort of the Name List.
If you have
•a second marriage but you don’t know who the first spouse was - put
“not known” (all lower case) as a given name
•people known to be siblings but don’t know either of the parents -
put surname (same as siblings) for father only, put mother’s given name
as “not known”
•mother and children but don’t know the father - put “not known” as
father’s given name (not surname) so as not to compromise the children’s
surname
•father and children but no mother - put “not known” as a mother’s
given name.

These people are not “unknown” – it’s just that at this time I do not
yet know their names.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant chart filling only half page width

2014-02-23 Thread Boyd Miller
Thanks for your thoughts Peter.
Try as I might, I cannot 'make' the problem happen. It occurs randomly,
after several completely normal charts, some with exactly the same
people. When I close Legacy and restart, and produce a chart with the
same people the problem has disappeared (until next time!)
It seems not to relate to any particular person. I've changed many of
the chart settings and cannot make the problem recur. There are no
particularly exotic programs on this computer, but I will watch out for
the problem on my netbook which has even fewer programs. Next time it
happens I will try a few more things before resorting to shutting the
program down.

RE: [LegacyUG] Descendant chart filling only half page width

2014-02-23 Thread Peter Haughton
Boyd

A number of years ago I had a problem different but
equivalent to what is happening to you.
Purely by chance I found some other setting somewhere
in the options for the chart/report was interfering with
the setting that mysteriously changed; in other words
they were using the same portion of memory somehow.

Try checking on ANY changes at all you make to options
between any chart generation and see if you can narrow
it down to one particular setting,
OR
check if it always seems to occur immediately after one
particular person is the focus of the chart. In which case
it may be a particular setting for that person.

[LegacyUG] Possible bug

2014-02-23 Thread Ed Ladendorf
Some of you know I've been having a problem opening a .pdf file in Legacy 8.
Here's what I found out:

I have Legacy 8 on my desktop computer and on my laptop. My desktop is Legacy
8.0.0.397, build date Feb 4. I can not open .pdf files on it. My laptop has not
been able to access the internet for a while. It's version is 8.0.0.367, build
date Dec 20. I added the .pdf file on it, and it opens as it should!!

If you have the Feb 4 build date, please try to open a .pdf file if you have
one in Legacy, and let us know if it's the build or not. Thanks.

OK, I'm perplexed.

Here are my options:

3.1 3.2 3.3all Initial Caps

Format names and places checked.

Import surnames all in UPPERCASE (not displayed .. in the database in
Uppercase ... they shouldn't be!)

?

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem viewing .pdf files

2014-02-23 Thread Darlene Carerros
Ed,

I had that same problem on another computer, and somebody on the list
suggested using another pdf reader, (two years ago, can't remember the pdf
reader I used think it was firefox??) that did the trick. Adobe worked
fine on one computer, not on the other. It's got to be something in the
operating system, but that's how I got it to work. The computer that it
wouldn't work on died last summer!!

Re: [LegacyUG] 'How To' YouTube video for changing tag colors in Legacy v8

2014-02-23 Thread David Cripps
Title: Re: [LegacyUG] 'How To' YouTube video for changing tag colors in Legacy v8

Hello Mary,

Can I echo the praise from other Listers, and say thank you Mary, brilliantly done.

This homemade video is made with basic screen capture software and is nothing fancy but if you can view it in HD 720P on YouTube, I think it will be satisfactory for viewing and following the steps.
I believe the default viewing begins with 480P. It is much clearer if viewed in 720P. If it doesn’t switch automatically to 720P, you can make this change under settings on the YouTube viewing screen. I hope this might be helpful to Legacy users who recently asked about changing the colors of their nine tags. … Mary

Re: [LegacyUG] Using Dropbox with Legacy8

2014-02-23 Thread Kathy Meyer
Yes, Pat, I love it. And I can even share it with someone else through the
Dropbox 'share' option (when they work on it, it doesn't change my database
though - they would have to access MY dropbox for it to sync like that) It
saved my bacon once when my data files got deleted by accident. I can work
on my Legacy file easily from my laptop or desktop or if I go to the
library and it syncs up perfectly. The only thing you can't do is work
from two places simultaneously. So if you use it to work on it with a
relative, for instance, you have to make sure you are not using it at the
same time or you will cause problems.

This has been discussed in the past, however, new members join us all the
time and sometimes we just don't see posts or aren't interested in certain
topics until we get further into the process. I certainly don't mind 'old
topics' being posted; sometimes there are changes that have occurred since
the last discussion and we always want to be helpful to anyone who posts a
query.

If anyone does wish to look at old posts on this or other topics, you can
search the archives. Sometimes that can be a challenge to find what you
want too, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from posting a query here either
way. Every query helps not only that person, but others who had not asked
the question yet. That is what this group is for.

Pat, if you would like me to send you a dropbox invitation, email me
privately kmeyer2...@gmail.com; it will get you a little extra space there
as will I. I keep ALL of my family history related items on there,
documents, pics, etc. as well as a number of other things.

Kathy

Re: [LegacyUG] Question about importing GEDCOMs

2014-02-23 Thread Ron Taylor
Scott,
Check the help file, search for "import gedcom" and look at the section titled
"Format Names and Places".  It will direct you to "Customize" which really
means Options>Customize>Data Format and then 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and you'll probably
also want 3.6 and 3.7.  Look at 3.4 for options for displaying the names
without changing them in the database.

the link was first established, and when you double click on it it is trying to
use the built in picture viewer in Legacy and it can’t because the file is a
PDF. When you attach any media item Legacy 8, you get a drop down menu with
selections Picture, Sound, Video, Document, Internet Website, or Scan a
Picture. Back in 7.5, there were four icons, Picture, Sound, Video, or File if
I remember properly.

I’ve never seen any use made of this data element other than if the type is
picture, it’s tries to use some internal viewer to display the media, and if it
is anything other than picture, it uses whatever default program you have set
up for that file type. You obviously have a PDF viewer set up because it opens
in that viewer elsewhere on your computer (e.g. in Windows explorer).

Now the problem. I know of nowhere in Legacy to see what the ‘type of file’
originally chosen was when the media was linked, nor any way to change it.

I guess you could try reattaching it, making sure you select ‘Document’ from
the drop down, and see whether it works. But, I admit it doesn’t help much with
fixing the issue.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not concerned with it not showing up in the Picture

[LegacyUG] Question about importing GEDCOMs

2014-02-23 Thread Scott Hall
I've begun the process of importing some GEDCOM files to reduce the effort
of loading people in my file. I have one small issue I cannot figure out.

I record surnames in Title Case (that is, only the first letter
capitalized), however when importing these GEDCOMs, the surnames come over
in all upper case and I cannot figure out how to request Legacy to adjust
this.

Thanks!

Re: [LegacyUG] Using Dropbox with Legacy8

2014-02-23 Thread Ron Taylor
This topic has been discussed several times.  The Legacy database can reside
almost anywhere you wish that your computer can access.  The primary limitation
is that only one program should open the database at a time.  This is not a
limitation of Legacy but of Microsoft Access which is where the data is managed
and Legacy only provides functions to use it through Access.

So, if you put your file in DropBox or some other internet sharing folder, you
must also be aware that if it gets opened by multiple users, there could be
trouble.  In the case of DropBox, it may create additional copies of the file.

Re: [LegacyUG] Children View - Show ½ kids

2014-02-23 Thread Ron Taylor
I was only pondering about a feature and wondering if others also had ideas to
formulate a real suggestion.  If you are truly interested in this 1/2 kid
problem, I will send you a detailed document with screen shots that illustrates
some of the problems.  The current program does show the missing biological
parent in parentheses as you described and that is good but not the issue here.
And sometimes, the missing biological parent name is not shown in parentheses
nor is the 1/2 indicator if the children have the Relationship to Parent
statuses set like Step, Adopted, Foster, etc.

Here's the link to my shared google doc with screen shots and details.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzvKiBRiS2YYWE5VdFlXanpSa2c/edit?usp=sharing

I would appreciate comments, solutions, or suggestions.

Ron,

We already display the name of the other spouse following the child's
name when showing half kids in family view. Isn't that enough to show
that the child is not biological to both the current parents? Or do you
mean where a child is adopted and is not the product of any previous
union of one of the parents?

If that is what you mean make a suggestion. Suggestions on this list are
seldom, if ever, translated into recorded suggestions in our
enhancements list.

Re: [LegacyUG] "Set Tag Colors" (Customize 9.2 / Other User-Interface Colors)

2014-02-23 Thread Bill Wilson
Pretty complicated for a casual user (imo)

Change Colors -> Click here to change other user-interface colors
Other Colors (tab)
Click on the tags
Then you can use a pre-defined set of tags (for example one of the rainbow
selections in the drop-down)
Or...
Right mouse-click on a tag to change the bg color for each tag
Left mouse-click on a tag to change the Tag# color for each tag

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem viewing .pdf files

2014-02-23 Thread Ed Ladendorf
Thanks for the replies. I'm not concerned with it not showing up in the Picture
Center. The Media Gallery shows the .pdf file, but as stated in my original
post, double clicking on it will not open it. I'm greeted with the message
"There is currently no default media player set up for your computer."  I'm
baffled by this, as when double clicking on a .pdf file anywhere but Legacy
launches it with no problem.

Re: [LegacyUG] Children View - Show ½ kids

2014-02-23 Thread Brian/Support

I think you will find it is because the pdf is not a picture and therefore
will not show up in the Picture Centre - that is only for actual pictures.

Thanks Mike. Sorry for the poor terminology. No wonder I didn't get a reply.

If I click on the icon for the media gallery for the individual, I'm able to
see the .pdf file. Not so in the Picture Center. If I click on the file in the
Media Gallery, it will not open. Where am I going wrong??

Media Center is misleading, particularly when it's still titled Picture Center.
Note the word Picture: image; photograph etc. PDF files are documents. They may
contain an image but they are not image files.

You can change the tag colours to any bright ones you want. Mine
include black, royal blue, yellow, emerald green, cerise and bright red
- no subtlety about them!
