Kurt,

I think you meant hours. ;-)
2 to 3 minutes to print 1000 individual reports is incredibly fast.

If a person has children, in Legacy they have a marriage relationship
even if to Unknown/Blank.

Re: [LegacyUG] Potential Problem - Unrecognized Event Date

2014-04-24 Thread Cathy Pinner
Paula,

I don't think there is a viable alternative for this sort of date.
Nothing else makes English sense.
I guess if you really can't stand the PP alert, you can put the date
in the notes and write a sentence override for this event.

However, I think there is a bug in that you don't seem to be able to
override the problem checking for this particular event OR override
the date checking for the individual.

Jenny, have you been able to exclude a problem like this?

Cathy

RE: [LegacyUG] Event Definition Sentence

2014-04-24 Thread Cathy Pinner
Mercifully, if you have [Notes] and/or [Sources] in the Event
Sentence Definition they only appear once.
This is the case even if for some events you rely on the tick in the
Report Options - event options - tick to include event notes to
include event notes.

If you want the notes to start on a new line you need to include
[CR][Notes] in your Event Sentence Definitions.

Paula,
The tick box in the Report Options to include Event notes does not
override the tick on the Event itself to exclude the note from reports.

These myriad of tick boxes work the same as the tick boxes in the
sources which have always been with us though we probably don't
notice them so much as most of them are set the defaults and forget.

The difference is that with the tick boxes on eg Source Detail Text
and Comments, if you've set the default to be unticked, you tick to include.
However, with Event Notes, the default is to have the notes checkbox
checked and its not a default that can be controlled.

Personally I don't like the new system for Event Notes. I argued
against it during development but didn't succeed.
I have also argued that if we have them, we ought to be able to reset
them in the same way as you can reset the source options in option
7.3. But that hasn't eventuated.
Apparently checkboxes are easier for most people to use rather than
the codes in Event Sentences. Mystery to me as I find them much
harder. And to test whether all the varying options are working
properly is a nightmare.

Note that option 7.10 controls whether notes or sources comes first
if they're not included in the Sentence Definition.

To give you an idea of what is involved in such an online questionnaire, see
this link.

http://mygenealogy.atspace.com/questionaire.htm

It is a very basic form but if you look at the html code for it, you can see
that a more complex form would be very involved, indeed. You would also need a
web hosting site to make it available to your target audience. You could email
the link or put a link to it on your own web page. What this form does, when
filled out and submitted, is send an email to the email address you designate
with the information the submitter provides.

You may feel free to use the code yourself if you are able to modify the
necessary parts.

Is there some way to adjust the Legacy logic where it thinks you should be

Save it as a Text file and e-mail that, then your family member can edit

The current release of Legacy has not implemented the use of a second

Re: [LegacyUG] Pedigree Chart Colors

2014-04-24 Thread Robert Stewart
My starting person happens to be my son.

I have gone with the 8-color route coloring all his ancestry, both on my
side, and my wifes. (I've got the 1st, light, set, my wife's the 2nd,
the darker version of the colors.)

The pedigree chart coloration option, however, appears to be only
4-colors. I didn't equate the on-screen "Ancestor Color" with the pedigree
chart option.

Is that to say on-screen, I have the option to show 2 color schemes, 8
colors total, but in a printed/pdf pedigree chart it will only show the 1st
and is limited to 4 colors?

Re: [LegacyUG] e-mailing questionnaire

2014-04-24 Thread Jessica Morgan
You could put the questions in Google Docs as a spreadsheet, form fill, or
survey type. Then they type answers directly into it, and it saves in your
Drive. You can then retrieve the answers from multiple people. Or as a doc
and one person could fill out one doc.

Did that make sense?

I have a survey online for family to fill out with name, address, email,
phone, etc. to keep up with current info for reunion notifications.

RE: [LegacyUG] Print out of all info and images in family file

2014-04-24 Thread Kurt Kneeland
I think the closest you can get to “everything” is the Individual Chart Report.
You can select “everyone” for the records to report. In report options, go
through and select everything possible, including stuff under Privacy, Media,
Events, etc. You probably want to turn off the Chronology option. The report
will print in alphabetical order (last name, first name) so you probably don’t
need the index unless you want the cross-references of where the individuals
show as children, parents, spouse, etc of other individuals. Note that this
report will take a very long time to run if you have a large file. I ran one
for about a 1000 individuals and it took 2 – 3 minutes.

Pat, What are you trying to find out? Is there a problem you're trying to
solve? Or are you just trying to figure out how to share an outline of the
information you have easily with someone else? I think this is a case where
"the end justifies the means" but we need to know your "end" in order to

I haven't thought beyond that.

What are you trying to achieve?

You could use the Name List to get a printout of certain information
(of your choice) on everyone in your database.

You can use the View - Scrapbook and choose ALL in all sections to
get a printout of the images - they're not usually in an order you'd
expect. You can get a list of images attached if you choose that
option rather than the images themselves and that may be more
helpful. It really depends what you are wanting.

Re: [LegacyUG] Logic for statistics reports

Hi Paula

There was an eventually fruitless discussion about this problem last
December

http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup%40legacyusers.com/msg33263.html

I have to confess I did not report this as a bug because I dont' think
it is a bug. In my opinion this is a result of faulty logic in the
programming of the statistics calculations for lifespan by century and
until someone representing Legacy comes clean and explains why this is
happening and what they are going to do about it then the only safe
advice is to ignore those statistics and not place too much trust in the
rest.

I'm not trying to find out anything by printing out everything. It's just
that I'm getting old, have family papers on deposit at the state historical
society and would like to be sure that all the info I have in my family
file is available on paper for others to see.

It's no big deal. I just thought that if there is an easy way to
accomplish that I'd like to know what it is. I appreciate your interest!!

I have one event where I want to say "She was a member there until 1977."

I can enter "until 1977" in the date field, but the dread red circle P pops up.

So, what would be your recommendation on "until 1977" ... "through 1977" has
same result. Just enter what I want and ignore the PP?

Because I apparently cannot tell Legacy to ignore the PP, because nothing
happens when I click on it in the Event screen, and checking the box in the
Event sentence/structure window to ignore PP doesn't really work at the field
level (not intended to I think).

I try to word everything so that it makes sense both now and at any point in
the future (e.g., 10 years from now). The word ‘present’ would be completely
ambiguous. I would try to get the event to read nicely while leaving the end
date out. You might have to use the notes field instead of the date field. In
notes, you can say things like ‘she started in 1980 and was still in that
position as of Apr 2014’.

Is there a way to display it for all of an individual's source citations??  Or
do we have to open each citation and click through to see how we had set the

get that added to the Individual's report ASAP, at the least.

Hold on... no Individual report anymore?  NO>>> it's just not in the "other
reports" drop down menu from the tool bar.  If I click on FGR, then the
Individual report tab is still there.  Whew.
My bad, again... this report is under the Charts tool bar icon.  I see that
once you click on one from either drop down menu, you get the familiar window &
tabs of reports or charts.

Re: [LegacyUG] "Right" way to add essays or excerpts from others to Family File

2014-04-24 Thread Paula Ryburn
Cathy, Thanks for clarifying for me ;)  I do think the Events are important,
just not what their names are in our Events Master List... we don't have to
have a new Event for every little event we might need to enter, especially if
it's just one individual.

The "essay" I was thinking of adding is the main event in this person's life.
I'm also not sure I will find out more about this person, so I would leave it
in General Notes.  Or maybe it's a great "intro" to this person... needs to
print even if Events are not included in the particular report.  Etc.  Legacy's
flexibility here is key.

Ron,
I don't think Paula is saying that Events don't matter.

She's saying that it doesn't really matter what they are called. What
you call an event depends on how many events of a similar nature you
expect to have and how you may want to search on it later.

Paula, I think the advantage of adding the excerpt to an event rather
than General notes is that it can be dated and placed in
chronological sequence.

I prefer to keep General Notes to an overall summary of someone's
life that theoretically is better constructed than a collection of
bits and pieces. If I have a good obituary and nothing else, I'll put
that in General Notes and make my Obituary Event for that person
Private or exclude the notes so that it doesn't appear twice in reports.

Re: [LegacyUG] Restoring picture links

2014-04-24 Thread Paula Ryburn
That would be so NOT quick.  I can't imagine trying to find each particular
source detail citation and relinking---yikes!
And I have done some renaming to have file names be more organized.  It was
time-consuming, but not nearly as scary as relinking everything could be...
especially if files are renamed in Picture Center.

Okay, now I see what you're saying... *IF* you're working on a file you
imported into an FDB separate from your main database.

1) If you'd attached some files and then realised
you needed to be more organised in naming files -
the quickest way would be to remove the links and start again.

2) If you got a file from someone else that had
media links but you didn't have the media - you'd
want to get rid of all the links.

I have not had any problems with "Exclude the following potential
problems from the Potential Problems list for this individual." I use
it a lot.

Yes, there is! Look at Tools>Potential Problems>Gaps and decide how you
want to change the settings. You can change the "length of time between
children" and/or you can have the "gap settings" only apply to marriages
(and the children thereof) before a certain date of your choosing.

Re: [LegacyUG] Potential Problem - Unrecognized Event Date

2014-04-24 Thread Paula Ryburn
I have one event where I want to say "She was a member there until 1977."
I can enter "until 1977" in the date field, but the dread red circle P pops up.

So, what would be your recommendation on "until 1977" ...  "through 1977" has
same result.  Just enter what I want and ignore the PP?
Because I apparently cannot tell Legacy to ignore the PP, because nothing
happens when I click on it in the Event screen, and checking the box in the
Event sentence/structure window to ignore PP doesn't really work at the field
level (not intended to I think).

I try to word everything so that it makes sense both now and at any point
in the future (e.g., 10 years from now). The word ‘present’ would be completely
ambiguous. I would try to get the event to read nicely while leaving the end
date out. You might have to use the notes field instead of the date field. In
notes, you can say things like ‘she started in 1980 and was still in that
position as of Apr 2014’.

I guess I was thinking about those who were born and died in the 1900-1999
range, and there would've had to be a lot of infant deaths (that do not spring
to my mind) to bring down the average from the long-lived relatives I do know
about.  Then again, my grandfather was born in 1896 and my grandmother died in
2000... so maybe they are dropped from the calculations because they cross
centuries...?  Hence, my question about the logic used.  Would like to see that
before I claim there are bugs. ;)

You probably mean "Lifespan" rather than "age."  Do you have death dates
for most of the individuals in that range?  I doubt it as they are
probably mostly still alive!

That is the sort of answer I am looking for from Legacy:
"If the individual does not have a valid birth and death date, they are
excluded from the statistics."
Or
"If the individual does not have either a valid birth date or a valid death
date, they are excluded from the statistics.  Those with a valid date in one
field will be incorporated into the statistics using the lifespan parameters
you have set in Customize."

What about individuals whose lives cross century boundaries?  Where are they
counted?
What about individuals born IN 2000?  Ranges are "1900-1999" and "after 2000"...
Etc.
Why yes, yes, I am a numbers nerd. haha

any problem exclusions that are keeping the birth too soon PP from
appearing. There is a PP indicator on the first listed Twin because
there is a gap of more than 48 months between me and my twin and our
older sibling. Our twin sisters were born just a few months less than 48
months after us and neither of them shows a PP indicator.

Re: [LegacyUG] Event Definition Sentence

"hmm..."
So, if I enter something in Event Notes, it will print on any reports where I
select the option to include Event Notes?  Even if I have changed the Event
Sentence to not include the Notes field?  Or indicated in a Sentence Over-ride
that I don't want the Notes field to print??

So, there must be default "where to print" logic... Print Event Sentence,
followed by Event Notes, followed by Event Sources...?

If I don't want the Event Notes for a particular Event to print (and do want
them to print for others on the report), instead of just removing the Event
Notes field from the Sentence (or removing that field from a sentence
over-ride?), would I need to enclose the Event Notes in [[ ]] ?  (and not print
private)

I guess what I'm asking is do I need to go through all my Event Sentence
definitions and determine if the new v8 report over-rides are going to mess
them up...?
Maybe I am missing something in this discussion...?  Is there an explanation in
Help?
Thanks,

Notes and Sources in event sentences in Legacy 8 are redundant. The
Report options in Legacy 8 decide whether notes and sources are included
in the reports not the event sentences. In Legacy 7.5 and earlier those
had to be in the sentence or, even if notes and sources were asked for,
they would not be included.

Pedigree chart colours are not based on the starting person for the
chart they are based on the starting person from Tools > Set Ancestor
Colours. If the starting person for ancestor colours was the father that
is why only his ancestors were coloured. If you were creating a chart
for someone who is not even in the starting person's line none of the
people would be coloured.

[LegacyUG] Pedigree Chart Colors

2014-04-24 Thread Robert Stewart
I wanted to run a pedigree chart for an individual.

I selected the option for four colors, where the individual was blue,
the father's father as blue, the father's mother tan, the mother's father
green, and mother's mother pink.

What happened however is the individual's father's family received all the
colors (as if coloration was based on, and started with, the individuals
father) and the individual's mother's family received none.

Pedigree chart coloration should start with, and be based on, the target
individual, not their family.

What have I done wrong in generating the report that it would turn out this
way?

Thanks.

When you say "these relationships" I presume you mean "relationships to
the wedding". You have various options. You can mention them in the
Marriage Notes or you can create a Marriage Event (or more than one) to
give all the details of the wedding ceremony.

If the people already have an entry in your family file, you can create
Events for them, such as Witness, Bridesmaid, Wedding Guest or you can
use Event Sharing to share the Marriage with them, assigning them the
appropriate Rôles. If the people do not already have an entry in your
family file you can either add them as a linked or unlinked individual
before Sharing with them, or you can simply add them as person Sharing
the Event by typing in their names when setting up the Share.

Re: [LegacyUG] Correcting birth date

Hi Shirley,

Add the new information as an Alt. Birth in the special events.
Make sure you don't include a description.
Then with it highlighted in the Event list use the Option button and
choose to swap the event with the Birth details.

You can then write notes about the other date of birth being
inaccurate or entirely wrong depending on circumstances.
You may want to change the name of the special Event to Disproven Birth.

Simple. There's an Alt. Birth event. Enter the new date and information as an
Alt. Birth event. Then, selecting the Alt. Birth event, click on the Options
button and swap it with the incorrect birth details. The old details then become
the Alt. Birth event which you can now update the Notes for.
