Re: [LegacyUG] Entering a sibling without parents
Good Evening, Years ago, I made up a system for folks for whom I had only one name, either Given or Surname or no names at all. For the women with a given name:: Anna Nomaid For the men: John Nolast For a male with no names at: Nofirst Nolast For a female with no names: Nofirst Nomaid This works very well, and for reasons that become clear when someone swipes my work, it is identified by the unusual way I formatted the unknown's in my data. [LegacyUG] Creating a separate tree for research
Good Morning, Jane poses a good question and a nice way to do specific research. I would do this: 1. Find the particular Ancestor in question on the index - bring up the family page 2. Go at least two generations back from that Ancestor [his or her G Grandparents.] 3. Export to a Ged com. Using the 'record Select button' 4. Notice that it is necessary to have a way to isolate the particular individuals - otherwise you will wind up making a gedcom of your entire database. Now, here is the fun part. Create either a focus group with the Ancestors G Grand Parents and descendents or Tag that set of G Grand Parents and descendents Then go back to Export and create a gedcom of that particular set of people. Import the new specific Gedcom back into legacy as a separate database and you have it set to use. Re: [LegacyUG] Which report?
Good Morning There are a couple of reports that would work for Jane The Descendent Report / either book or narrative will have all the information. Clicking on Reports, then pick one and test it. For the person, there are two ways to find him. If you have him on screen, Family, then he will come up as the person for whom the report will be. If not, then click on the 'change' button at the bottom of the report screen and select him from the list that pops. If you want your children in the report, you need to make sure the # of generations cover everyone. If not, then change the # to match what you need. Make sure you check all the options. At the bottom - investigate all the options, Index. Report & Title Page The 'Report Options' is critical as it has check boxes for the various types of info to include. Do a preview before printing. I like pdf files because of the format, but a text file is easily editable. Re: [LegacyUG] Help needed to create a special report
Hi Linda, Bring up the location list. If you have tagged all locations that you know are for folks in your direct line, then you should be able to print a report that will show everyone who is both location tagged and direct line tagged. The problem I see is that the list will be huge! So, in order to make lists that are specific to one State, for instance, you need to untag everything else in locations. You could just print the whole thing, but there might be overlap. I make Location / Surname / Event lists all the time. Since it is almost impossible to focus on a large group of people in various locations. I would create lists specific to one State at a time. It would be tricky at first because you will be looking at locations and tagged individuals at the same time, but once you get the hang of it, you can go through the location list quickly, tag the places where your direct line folks are and create the list. There is no way to include events in the above lists. Those will have to be separate functions. Re: [LegacyUG] Census Dates
Hi June, Interesting question and I'll bet there are others who did not enter dates. Most of the Census takers did not work in the winter months. I use Census for the Event, Then for the description I put in "1850 Federal" Then I put in the actual date located at the top of the Census Sheet Then the location. So each year is a specific event, which makes searching for a particular year Census event easy. If you have done as I listed above, you might be able to edit the individual event to include a range of dates: Sorta like this: 1 Mar 1850 > 31 Nov 1850 This should change each person's information who has a Census record for 1850. The other option would be to eliminate the date field. Re: [LegacyUG] Comprehensive .pdf?
Good Morning Legacy Users & Pat, I did an experiment with your question of a comprehensive pdf report. I have 13,173 individuals in my database. 1. Attempted to do a complete individual pdf report: System locked up & Legacy shut down. I did this twice. [I have 16gb of Ram] 2. Created a htm file of all individuals, took about 4 minutes. 3. Created a text file of all individuals, this took not quite 5 minutes. 4. Opened the text file with two different types of software, neither of which gives the # of pages. The txt file cannot be opened with Word or Clones such as Kingsoft Writer. So, this site will convert txt to doc https://convertio.co/txt-doc/ File converted to doc and saved to hd = size of converted file: 23.4mb The converted doc file has 7439 pages to it! Re: [LegacyUG] Linking files
Good Morning, Linking files is an ok idea, but if your main hard drive dies or you move files, the link becomes invalid. That said, here is what to do - this also works for cloud accounts such as dropbox. If, for instance, I want to link a pdf with a list of folks in Nebraska that are part of my family, here is what to do. 1. Locate the file using Win Explorer 2. It is on my external Drive G in a folder. 3. Right click on the file and copy the name AncS-AirAllegPA.pdf Then Right click and copy the path: G:\Ship-Air1914-62/ Combine the two: G:\Ship-Air1914-62/AncS-AirAllegPA.pdf Copy the link to your Person in the Notes Section of Legacy If the file is in your DropBox. Open Win Expl C:\Users\MarthaAG\Dropbox C:\Users\MarthaAG\Dropbox\Legacy If you have a separate folder for Documents in your DB Legacy folder, the path is as above. If the file is online, access the file and copy the link, inserting it into your notes. But, be careful, the fluid nature of the web tells us that stuff can go away. And if you have files on RootsWeb, be careful. They lost tons of data with the recent hardware failure. Open the 'Search' Function, click on the 'Detailed' Tab The first set - Select: Individual. Where: Dropdown box, select Surname. How, Equal. What: I entered my 3 x G Grandfather's Surname: Averill 3. Second Set: Individual, Relationship, Equal to, Related 4. Third Set: Individual, Surname, Equal to, Simonaro [my Grandson's Surname] Use 'and' in all the slots. Then Click the 'Create List' tab at the bottom. Guess what? My grandson is not related. If I set the 'and' to 'or' in the 3rd set, it produces a list of 97 people who are related. The search list of the 97 people can be tagged and a report made. I have never experienced any of these problems and am wondering if they are 'Version Specific'. I ran Win 7 Pro for years, then upgraded to 8 and 8.1 Pro, then Win 10 Pro. All the while using Legacy and its Versions, upgrading along the way. I have also used One Drive and have the app installed - at no time have any of my legacy files been sent or installed there. So, it would be helpful if those who are having these problems, be specific as to which version of Win 10 they are using. [LegacyUG] Websites / Legacy Files
Good Morning, In the spirit of 'sharing', here are a few suggestions about websites and information for sharing online and preservation of work. If you don't want to continue to 'fiddle' with your research and have reached a point where you consider it as complete as it can be for now, you might want to consider 'donating' it to the LDS. You can upload a gedcom with all the info and it will go into their archives and [I think] be posted on their web pages.. But, with a bit of further exploration, I find that the Internet Archive will take electronic - digitized books, family and otherwise. So if you wished to create descendent narratives for your family, they might just take them and put them online for others to view, etc. Certainly worth checking into. http://en.flossmanuals.net/e-book-enlightenment/donating-e-books-to-the-internet-archive/ You could also create files on Family Search, but that involves direct data input and if you do not 'lock' the files, they will be altered. I will say, as an avid web design person, the work is tedious, but addicting. I am the State Coordinator for the CAGenWeb and also County Coordinator for many USGW States. I love the work, but in truth, spend hours at it. I also create files from Legacy that I upload to appropriate locations, thus sharing my personal research. Re: [LegacyUG] Relationship indicator
Good Morning, I have a lot of collateral and miscellaneous family in my database who are not related and are not researched to a great depth. Because I do not want to delete them, I use a system of identification for them. First, I set the relationships with myself as the person 'related to'. Then I add a column to the index [far left] that shows the relationships. Then, I tag all of the 'non related' folk with Tag 3. I prefer the type of relationship on the index so I do not have a 'Tag' Column. This way I know at a glance if a person is related when I am looking for information on the rest of the folks. The tags show up on the both the Name List and the Marriage list. Re: [LegacyUG] what a mess
Hi Jodi, I would begin with the Name List. Because the Name List comes up alphabetically, it will be fairly simple to find the various spellings. With the Name List up, over to the right is the data for each person. Click on the 'edit tab' and notice bottom right are slots for tagging. Using a tag # that is not currently being used, I would tag all of the Surnames that are the ones you feel may be different spellings of the same name. Then create a list of all tagged folks. I would then create a spreadsheet for the tagged folks that shows dates of birth and parents. You won't know if they are the same person unless you have vital data. Brian has a point though, time frames do make a difference. But since you have so many who may be the same, I would pick the earliest spelling, then create aka's for the later spellings. But you will have to do manual merging to get everyone connected properly. Good Morning, A word of caution. RW will not delete your files if you upload them and then discover that you have errors or need to update it with a new file. I have fought with them for over 15 years to get files taken off of 'World Connect' - they just will not do it. As for Ancestry, do not use their system for the same reason and one more. If you do pony up for a subscription, read the fine print. They will charge you 20 to 25.00 for a gedcom should you discontinue your subscription without creating one and downloading it before you quit. Additionally, Ancestry, as well as FS are only good for CLUES and in some cases viable data, they are no substitute for Legacy or any other Genealogical Software to be used offline. The outage last March of RW is a case in point. The same thing has happened with Ancestry and their system has been hacked more than once. Preserve your work, in multiple places and share it. [LegacyUG] Death Certificate Info
Good Evening, I have collected hundreds of digital copies of Death Certificates. I also have Death information from other sources where the info has been abstracted and indexed. My question: Since the format for D/C's has changed over the years and the available information is different, it is difficult to come up with a format or template for the information. There does not seem to be any reason to duplicate what is on the abstract and what appears on the D/C. So, what is the best way to record the information on the D/C in the Notes / Medical section? There are almost always at least 3 dates on a D/C - and sometimes many more : Date of Death Date [found] Date when last seen by a medical person Date when signed off by Coroner or MD Date when Certificate is Filed So if I create an event for both the items where the death info is found, then what date get's used for the info on the D/C? If I use the date of death, both dates will show up together, but that is not exactly chronological because an exact time is not part of the date. Thoughts? Re: [LegacyUG] Events & Sources
Evelyn & Shirley, Thank you for the ideas on Events, etc Long ago [almost 20 years] when I began using Genealogical software, I included the source of an abstracted or transcribed document at the bottom of the abstract or transcript. When Legacy came along with it's 'Source Writer', I tried it and found that the process was so blasted tedious, I went back to my original idea of having the source as part of the transcript. I know that this will cause shudders of horror, but believe me, it saves oodles of time with data input and accomplishes the goal of having the source bound to the event in a way that works with no hitches. It prints out just fine, is where it belongs in the grand scheme of things and does not get forgotten. In fact, I copy and paste the source to the bottom of the page before ever abstracting or transcribing. If I am entering the event directly in to Legacy as a copy and paste, it still goes in the notes section first, then the info slots are filled, then the abstracted data is entered in the notes section. Save and if it is a shared event, then do the share. In the scenario I described earlier, putting info and sources from both a DC and a Vital Record in the same event would not work because of the different dates. But having two events connected to a death could be accomplished by creating another Event Definition: Cause of Death. Because the two events are close together in time - not more than a few days at most, they would still fall into chronological order. Thanks for your help. [LegacyUG] Research / General Notes
Good Afternoon, The discussion on what happens to the three 'Note' sections has encouraged me to dig deeper into finding exactly what I have put in the Notes and where the info should really be. Some of the Notes fall into the 'Research' Category and I have a handle on what to do with those. What bothers me right now and something I would like input on is the info I have that tells me where I got information via email lists, and direct communication with various cousins, etc. Back in 1999 when Mail Lists were in vogue, a lot of us shared information via them and also personal communication. Sharing sets of files as well as gedcoms. But, those bits and pieces wound up in General Notes because I had no place else to put them. The info is, obviously, scattered among my people. So, how do I preserve the original source of email addy and date along with a brief explanation of what was sent? If I create a general event such as 'Electronic Source' or 'Email Communication' or something similar, will anyone know what it is 50 years from now? What about the date when I actually got the information? For instance: Abraham Adsit, DOB: 3 Mar 1850, Conneaut, Crawford, PA DOD: 9 Nov 1936, Pennsylvania An event for the origin of the data on him and his ancestors was shared: Abram Adsit, and ancestors courtesy of Patricia M. [LegacyUG] Locations in General Notes
Good Evening, In the process of cleaning up the three sections of Notes, I am noticing that there are locations in the 'General' Section of the Notes. I know that I did not enter these locations in the Gen Note Section. From what I can determine, the locations in the Gen Note Tab match the following location data entries: Birth Event: Census The entries are not consistent over the whole database. What could cause this? Thanks for any suggestions. Re: [LegacyUG] Research / General Notes
Hi Jenny, Thanks for your thoughts. I guess I did not make clear my concerns. I know what and how to put information into events, what I did not know was how to use email notes, etc as sources. Generally, I do not use the Source writer because it is just too much work. And I want the source of the data right under the information so there can never be any doubt where it came from - attaching stuff might get lost if I ever exit Legacy. Good Afternoon, My apologies. Here is what happened when I tried to install Linux 'Mint' I wanted to install Linux Mint in order to create a dual boot system so that I could try other programs that might work better than those associated with Win 10. After what I thought was a successful installation, the whole system crashed, no Linux and no Win 10 - nothing worked at all. I wound up having to reformat my primary hard drive, and beginning with Win 7 Pro [I still had my original Win 7 Pro Disk with Key] went through re-installing from there to Win 8 & 8.1, then on to Win 10 Pro. I had full back-ups of all data and a list of programs to reinstall so did not lose anything but a lot of time and sleep! I have plenty of Memory: 16gb and two Hard Drives, so they were not the problem. It was an exercise in frustration, to say the least. Re: [LegacyUG] Searchable PDF's & linking
Hi Joyce, Thanks, I knew how to do that, but... According to the help file, it does not show up on any of the reports. It is just accessible internally. Adding Other Documents (Deluxe Edition Only) In addition to pictures, sound, and video files, you can also attach any other type of document to a person (or to an event, source, or location). These documents can be word processing files, PDF files, spreadsheets, web pages - whatever you like. Just as with sound and video files, these other documents cannot be included on reports, but you can load and view them as you would any other file. Double-clicking on a word processor document starts your word processor and displays the file. The same happens for any other type of file. Whatever program is associated with that file type will be loaded to display the file. To add a document, click the Add Media button, choose Document, and then specify the drive and folder where the document file can be found. Re: [LegacyUG] Family vs non-Family
Hello, I set my files up so that I have an index and tagging system that shows the relation to me. That way I can tell at a glance which person is mine. By setting the relationship settings high enough, I can see how deep the 'cousins' go. Most of the time, I do not search for anyone born after about 1950, but since those folks are now in their 60's, it is time to begin checking up on them. I use Tag #3 because it shows up on the Name list and I do not have to change the settings. Also, since I know what it is being used for, I do not mess with it once the relationships are set up. I do update the relationships when I have been adding or deleting folks. I use the far left col of the regular index for my Relationship Col. The folks who are not related have a blank in the Col, so it is easy to see who is not related and equally easy to see who is a 5th cousin 2x removed. I do not use RIN's on the Index - Customizing the index is very helpful. I hope this helps. [LegacyUG] Descriptions in Events
Good Afternoon, I have a set of files generated from years of research on one immigrant family. I abstracted the data and created an event for the data which is now attached to each person in the file [almost 400 entries]. The data for each person is different. Is there a way to insert a global description into the header for a set of tagged people for a particular event? I really don't want to do this one at a time. I have an event set up for miscellaneous 'Family Files'. This new abstracted data should have been entered there with a description of where the data came from. I used the name of the original researcher as the name of the specific data and created an event with her name [Zink Data] Here's what I would like to do: Event Name: Family Files Description: Zink Data Date: 1 Jan 1997 [this is the date that I got the files] Thanks for any suggestions. Re: [LegacyUG] Descriptions in Events
Hi Jennie, Thank you. It is not the event notes I wish to change, it is the event description. But I thank you for the detailed explanation. Here is what I have: Event Name: Family Files Event Desc: Blank Event Date: Jan 1997 Here is what I want to have Event Name: Family Files Event Desc: Zink Data Event Date: Jan 1997 I did an experiment yesterday that worked, sorta. And now cannot remember exactly what I did. But I did get the event Desc inserted globally. But, because I made a new file with all 386 folks in it - which turned out to add the families. Did an 'oops' - anyhow, long story shorter... I managed to get the Zink Data inserted. but then added the people back in to a new master file and it duplicated them. Well, that was ok because I had them tagged, but it unlinked some of them and to be honest, I am not sure why it unlinked some of them. Back to the drawing board this morning. I did notice the event notes stuff which I hardly ever use. Played with it a bit, but it will not do what I want. You are probably right, what I want to do is not within the capabilities of Legacy at this point. Re: [LegacyUG] Descriptions in Events
Hello, The name 'Zink Data' refers to the lady who did the original research: Arleen Zink. Here is a sample of the data that was typed up after the research was done. "Dennis was the son of a wooden shoe maker. He had little to no education. His occupation was termed "day laborer." He and his second wife, Florence emigrated to the USA in 1855 with the children. They came to Fond du Lac, WI. They later moved to Kewaunee County where there was a large settlement of Belgians. He purchased land in 1860 at the price of $.50 per acre. He later sold it to his son Jean Baptiste. He is buried in St. Hubert's Cemetery in Rosiere, WI. This cemetery is located on land known as Massart Estate, some of his descendants are still living on this land." Below is the information that goes with each bit of abstracted data. Sect. Re: [LegacyUG] miss labeling of individual
Hi Donna, Here is what Legacy has to say: [From the Legacy Help File] Changing Gender If you find that you need to change the gender of an individual, (if, for example you or someone else set it incorrectly when entering the individual) it is easy to do. The procedure, however, depends on the situation: If the individual has not yet been linked to a spouse, simply open the Information screen for the person and change the gender by choosing the appropriate M or F setting just to the right of the Title Suffix field. If you have already linked the individual to a spouse, you can swap the genders of the two individuals by choosing Swap Husband and Wife from the Edit tab of the Ribbon bar while the desired couple are displayed as the main Husband and Wife on the Family View or highlighted on the Pedigree, Descendant, or Index View. (If either the male or the female is linked to more than one partner, the swap cannot be made. You will have to unlink the other partner(s), swap the gender of the current couple, and then make the necessary gender changes to the other partners before linking them back in.) Hi Pete, I do not use Ancestry for my genealogy, I have used Legacy for a very long time, quitting FTM long before Anc. purchased it. What I am wondering, and others may be able to answer better than I, is the time frame involved with creating a gedcom on Anc and when the original files were updated online. What if and this is pure speculation... the files in your gedcom are old? If you have updated a person or a family and you know exactly when you did the update, you might be able to take a look at the Ged file once it is imported into Legacy, then compare it to that which is currently online. That would tell you that the gedcom contains old files, not the current data. Thinking outside normal parameters. Re: [LegacyUG] Tagged people
Hi Margaret, I am sending this to the list, but would be happy to send you a 'how to' with images if it would help. First, what do you want to do with the list? Reason I ask is that the type of list you will produce depends upon it's purpose. For instance, if you produce a csv list which will become a spreadsheet, you might want that type to use so that you can condense or eliminate folks for which you are making corrections. Or if you are producing a list that will be saved as a pdf and is going to be used for research or reference, you do not need to edit it. So, first things first. What is the purpose of the tagged list? Re: [LegacyUG] Tagged people
Hi Margaret, Ok, thank you. If each person that you want to view has data in their General Notes Section: There is a way to view a tagged set of folks and edit the information at the same time. To do this click on 'Name List' - top ribbon bar, left side. You should see a list of all your people. Down at the bottom are boxes: To do, options, search Click on Search - another box pops Click on 'Show all tagged' another box pops which will have all the tag numbers. Pick the tag # that you used to make your list. Now you should see all the tagged folks Next click on the box that says 'print' [next to the search box] - another box pops with the 'List Report Options'. You can select any of the options to create a file, but truthfully you can do the corrections without creating another / printed list. Why? Because once you have all the tagged folks on your Name List, you can edit. To the right of your list of tagged folks is an edit screen. Each person has a series of tabs which allow you to edit the data. Click on the 'Notes' tab: General, Research & Medical entry areas come up. You can edit, save and go on to the next person. Additionally, you can untag from this screen . Click on 'Edit', notice on the bottom right a series of little boxes-these are the tags used. Click the blue one for the # you used and that person is untagged. I hope this helps. [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 and F-A-G
Good Morning, I have been using the new F-A-G function of Legacy 9 and now wish to be able to use the search function to narrow down folks to look for or in some cases wish to ignore those who already have a F-A-G Memorial entered. One of the things that I did first was to include a F-A-G Mem # Col on the index. This works fine, and I can see at a glance who has been updated. But, as mentioned above, I now want a list specific to three things: Surname, Birth Location [State] and whether they have a F-A-G Memorial #. The Search function has options such as: Equal, Contains, Not Equal, etc. but the F-A-G Mem #s are huge and not consistent so using any of the options does not work. For instance if the first three #s were 123, a search might work, but they are not. Any suggestions? Re: [LegacyUG] Graphics being posted to the list
Good Morning Listers and Legacy Support Staff I write tutorials all the time using graphics from various types of software along with text explaining the steps- these are primarily for folks who need a visual way to navigate complicated programs and get the results they desire. If we cannot help each other using our experiences, we are shooting ourselves in the foot and discouraging others from expanding their use and knowledge of the software that can make a difference in the organization of their family research. Please consider allowing graphics within email notes and queries, they work! Re: [LegacyUG] Citations, sources, etc.
Good Evening, At the risk of upsetting folks who believe in the E Showen Mills Theory[sorry if her name is wrong] I put all of my citations right at the bottom of the data in any event or note. That way the citation stays with the data, no matter where it goes - into a gedcom or a pdf to send off to a fellow researcher. This also eliminates having to think about format. If I cut and paste the Source Citation right from the webpage, or type the title of a book [adding the page # of course] or an email with a date and addy, it is done and I can move on to doing real research and not fret about what it looks like. And, anyone looking at my work can see at a glance where the data came from. For Instance: the 1850 Census for this family Crosley, Thomas C Age 42, B: Ohio, Physician Crosley, E M Age 42, B: Virginia [Cannot read or write] Crosley, Susan Age 22, B: Indiana Crosley, James Age 19, B: Indiana, Farmer Crosley, M T Age 17, B: Indiana Crosley, John Age 14, B: Indiana Crosley, N Age 12, B: Indiana Crosley, Bennet Age 10, B: Indiana Crosley, A M Age 7, B: Indiana Crosley, D Age 4, B: Indiana Crosley, S Age 2, B: Indiana Image Source: Year: 1850; Census Place: District 56, Mercer, Missouri; Roll: M432_406; Page: 374; Image: 233 Now, Census records are all over the place, so lately I am not including a website url Heck, you can even download a whole roll of digitized census film from the Archive.org site. Re: [LegacyUG] Copying upgraded Legacy Deluxe 9 from PC to Laptop
Hi Maria, Down load the Standard version 9 to your LT, Then take a look at your customer # on your PC, Write it down. Open legacy on the LT then do this: The Deluxe features are hidden inside the free Standard Edition. To unlock the Deluxe features, start the program and click on Help > Unlock Legacy Deluxe. Follow the prompts to enter your name and your Deluxe Customer Number and click the Unlock button. If you are going to use both the PC and the LT, you need to be sure you sync your main file so that it can be accessed from either system. I put my core Legacy files in my drop box so that I can access the file from anywhere I am using Legacy. If you choose to use both, then you need to change the 'location' of the files. This is done through "Options" I hope this helps. Re: [LegacyUG] Copying upgraded Legacy Deluxe 9 from PC to Laptop
Hi Jane, The core parts of legacy are in the drop box, not the whole program. You cannot run Legacy from a Drop Box or a Cloud account. The main fdb file and a few bits and pieces are in the db. Everything else is where it should be so that it can work with Windows. I hope this makes sense. Re: [LegacyUG] Hashtag file
Hi Linda, I just looked at the 'bits and pieces' of my legacy file that live in my dropbox - There is a file with the extension 'hdb' In one of my backup files it is smaller than a newer one in which I have increased the # of hashtags I am using. This might be the file you are missing. Hi Leonard, Nice... Here is what I mean, I had no words to describe what all the 'core' files for Legacy were, so I made up my own description. Here are the files in the drop box. Crosley-2May2017.FG Crosley-2May2017.H1 Crosley-2May2017.H2 Crosley-2May2017.ldb Crosley-2May2017.TC Crosley-2May2017~hdb.hdb Crosley-2May2017~hdb.ldb Crosley-2May2017~Rc3.ldb Crosley-2May2017~Rc3.Rc3 Crosley-2May2017~Rc3.Rc3.cal Martha Los Osos, CA -- LegacyUserGroup mailing list LegacyUserGroup@legacyusers.com To manage your subscription and unsubscribe http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com Archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Users Classes
Listers, One of the functions of my Gen Soc was to have Legacy user classes [ way back when Legacy began]. After those ceased, I did Legacy tutorials when it was my turn to 'sit the Genealogical Library'. So, check with your local Gen Soc and see if someone is willing to set up classes for Version 9. Or find a local Legacy guru and meet at the public library where they have wifi. [LegacyUG] Hash Tags
Good Morning Cathy, Thank you for the explanation on where the Hash Tag data is located. If it is 'inside' the fdb file, then they should not have disappeared. I am curious about one other thing. I am using them as a temporary way of marking people. I use tagging for marking people who fit different requirements with regard to my research. Are the Hash Tags meant to be an alternate permanent identifier or just temporary like I am using? Reason I ask is whether they would be included in a gedcom and if so, what happens to them when someone who does not use Legacy opens the gedcom? I hope the question makes sense. Re: [LegacyUG] Hashtag file
Hi Linda, I just started using Hash Tags a few days ago, so I am no expert. But I use tagging all the time. So here is something to think about that might save you some work re-doing your HT's. I am also using the new Find-A-Grave search function. So this note will encompass both, perhaps it will help you figure out what to do. If I cannot find a Cem or Grave location right away for a batch of folks, I tag them using a tag that is not a permanent one [I have several permanent Tags]. Then I use the Search/Find Function and create a list for those temp tagged people. Once the search list comes up on the Name List, click on 'Options' and then 'Add Hashtag to everyone in the list'. Then Untag the people on the Temp list so that particular Tag can be used again. So if you can create a set of tagged folks for those 'lost' HT people, you might be able to get all of your HT people back. Did you categorize your HT's and create one HT for each category? If so, then the above scenario might be helpful. I do not know what happens when you have two different HT's. for the same person But, I just did an experiment and when you have two HT's for a person, the little box pops when you hover over the HT and you can see what both of them are. I hope this helps. Re: [LegacyUG] How to fully integrate all events chronologically
Hi Susan Have you explored the Chronology tab? Click on it at the top tabs [Family View] etc - to the far right one tab says Chronlogy, then when it comes up, Click on Options, Pick either style that you want, Then click on Report and this gives you a format. Re: [LegacyUG] Hints & My Heritage
Hi Brian, Not exactly correct. If you have a LDS account [not as a member, but as a user of the FS - Legacy Integration,] it comes up with the login screen. When I first tried it on day one of V9, it did an auto log in after I set up my user id and pw for FS. Did the first update change that? Re: [LegacyUG] Hints & My Heritage, FS, Gen Bank and FMP
Hello Brian: I have the latest version: Installed Version: 9.0.0.169 From the Help Section - I quote: Yes, I know the below says FS Family Tree, but the hints show up along with My Heritage, Gen Bank and FindMyPass "FamilySearch Family Tree" "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released a web application to be able to interact with very large, unified databases of connected genealogical information. They call it Family Tree. Many of the FamilySearch databases have been combined into one database and all the records for each individual have been combined into folders. These folders are linked to pedigrees. To use the FamilySearch service you must have a free account where you set up a username and password. These must be entered into the Username and Password fields. After entering them you can click the Test Login button to make sure everything is correct. You can have your hint searches refreshed from time to time. You can set this to happen between every 30 and 120 days. This will let you see new hint results as they are added to the service. When high-confidence hints are found (at least a level of 4 out of 5), you can have Legacy automatically automatch the people in your family file to those in FamilySearch. This will fill in the FamilySearch ID number into the correct field for each person. To choose this option, select the Automatch... option. If you would ever like to have all the FamilySearch hints refreshed for all the people in your family file, you can click the Refresh button to the right of the FamilySearch option. This will then start going through all the existing FamilySearch hints in your family file and resubmitting them in the background." [LegacyUG] Dates when not really known
Hello, I noticed the discussion of using the various words for a date that is not really known. Michelle said that Est could be used. Well I tried it and after typing 'Est' and hitting the enter key, 'est' was the result. Why? I have all settings I can find set to 'do not change what I enter'. Thoughts? Re: [LegacyUG] Restore in Legacy 9 did not include my media files
Hi Roxanne, A gedcom will not contain any media files. If you have them in your dropbox as a media back-up, you can import them back into legacy once you get legacy 9 set up. If you wish to use Legacy on a tablet or phone you have to purchase an external program called 'Families'. At this point in time, Legacy has to be run on a Windows machine or, as mentioned, exported as a sqlite file for Families. Here is a link that explains it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.telgen.families&hl=en Martha In Los Osos, CA-- LegacyUserGroup mailing list LegacyUserGroup@legacyusers.com To manage your subscription and unsubscribe http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com Archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/

Hello, I am in the process of creating updated FGS's for a project. I have a couple who had no children and have indicated that fact. [LegacyUG] Event Notes
Good Morning, I am working on a file in preparation to putting a family online. In the past [last week] I was able to create a Descendant book, modify it and incorporate it into my web software.
