Re: [LegacyUG] V8 -Lost features that were in V7.5

2016-11-25 Thread Jennifer Crockett
Thanks, Cathy.

Funnily enough I didn't have the pop-up on Family View enabled - so I won't
miss that.

Re TNG - I have found it is best for me to use Basic Sources rather than
Source Writer and I don't plan on using Shared Events as these don't
translate well into TNG.

Jennifer
Legacy 8 installation does not overwrite Legacy 7.5 as the default locations
have changed.
So you can install Legacy 8 and still use Legacy 7.5.
You can't use the same database so make sure you convert a copy of your
database in a different folder rather than your current Legacy 7.5 database.

It's expected that Legacy 9 will overwrite Legacy 8.

RE TNG, John Lisle, one of the main Legacy testers, does extensive testing
of Legacy gedcom to TNG. You're likely to get more rather than less.
He's already been testing for Legacy 9 new features and most have been
implemented to aid upload to TNG.

Like Monique, I still miss the information pop-up on Family View that has
been replaced by the Child Scrolling Grid that I don't find anything like as
helpful. I tend to use Descendant View for a quick overview of children now,
after customising the columns.
But that's nothing to do with Gedcom.

Re: [LegacyUG] V8 -Lost features that were in V7.5

2016-11-25 Thread Monique Riley
Jennifer,

One thing that I really miss from v7.5 is when you hovered over a child in the
Family View, you could see the full date and place for birth, christening, and
death along with the full marriage date with spouse. In v8, you only get to see
the spouses name when you hover over the child's name.

That was so handy. I know in v8 you can change to a grid view, but if a family
has a lot of children, you can't see them all at once in the grid view. It was
very handy to quickly hover and see migration of families by where the vital
events of the children were taking place. I use the "best fit columns" for my
children to display in both v7.5 and v8.

That's the only feature I can think of that was lost. Maybe it was the only one
that I cared about though.

[LegacyUG] v8 Name Tags - Excellent feature

2014-08-14 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Following the problems Cheryl was having trying to figure out how to tag a
family line in order to create Name Tags for a family reunion, I took a
first look at the process.

I must admit this is a very neat feature of Legacy v8. To be able to include
a photo of the named person on the Name Tag, to include a small descendant
chart of the person in relation to their place in the family and to be able
to add the name of the Family Reunion really makes the Name Tags personal to
each recipient! To be able to create these printed Name Tags from your
database with a few clicks of the mouse is a real time saver and makes a
great contribution to a family reunion.

Well done, Legacy!

Thanks, Cheryl, for bringing this feature to my attention.

Mary

Re: [LegacyUG] V8 Display

2013-12-12 Thread Brian/Support
Those options are only offered during a new install. It has been a while
since I did that kind of install but if I remember correctly they were
possible colour schemes.

To change the entire colour scheme go to Options > Change Colours
Click the Choose an alternate colour scheme link to open the list of
available colour schemes.
Before you do though I suggest you click Options > Save the current
colour scheme to save any customization of the colours you made since
you installed. Give it a name like MyCustom. That way you will be able
to reload your current colours after changing the scheme.

Hi,

I'm struggling to configure Family View to give me the same 'large fonts' that
I was able to get in V7. I am using the same settings in both V7 and V8. In
Screen Fonts, Data is set Verdana 10 pt, Labels to Arial 10 pt, “stretch fonts
when resizing is checked”, and min font size is 10, max font size 99.

The names, dates, and location data displayed in Family View are significantly
smaller in V8, I estimate 2-3 pts.

Some reasons:

1.  The new ribbon takes up more space than the old toolbar.

[LegacyUG] v8 Bug: PP alert will resolve or not depending on click or right-click

2013-12-02 Thread Kirsty M. Haining
I’m using Win 8.1 64bit, Legacy 8.0.0.356

With a pop-up potential problem, I am presented with the standard choices:

 Right-click to exclude problems.

 Shift-right-click to change problem settings.

If I choose right-click, and exclude the particular warning message and save,
the PP alert does not clear. If, however, I choose click and bring up the
dialog box showing the problem and then select the button for “Mark as not a
problem” the PP alert WILL clear — even though both options have the effect of
ticking and saving the appropriate box in the individual’s “Exclude from
Potential Problems” dialog box. When the alert did not clear (because I had
right-clicked), I tried going to a different individual, refreshing the view,
etc., but the PP alert remained visible. When I went into the “Exclude from PP”
dialog box and found the ticked box on the appropriate tab (in my particular
case it was for a warning of a birth too long after the parents’ marriage), if
I CLEARED the ticked box, and saved, and exited, and then went in via the
PP-alert but this time chose CLICK instead of RIGHT-CLICK, chose to mark it as
not a problem, save, etc. … then the PP alert cleared. I did not try the
shift-right-click option to globally change my alert settings.

Incidentally, I found out this problem because I was reading about the
UnknownName.txt file for exclusions on the PP report — but I am seeing NO
alerts whatsoever for any non-standard names or characters in my name fields. I
thought it might be because I had never formally run the PP report, but
apparently that wasn’t the cause. Anyone know why I’m not seeing PP alerts for
non-standard names, etc.?

cheers,

Kirsty Haining

Pam,

I'm not a Mac user so I can't answer most of your questions, but it seems to me
that if you can get a copy of Windows 7, that would be the preferred Windows
version if you get Parallels, Fusion or Bootcamp.

WINE and Crossover XI don't need Windows installed. Crossover is the

RE: [LegacyUG] v8 Hide/Show Spouse/Child and Siblings List

2013-12-01 Thread Kurt Kneeland
Option 1.7 controls the popup information for spouse(s) and children on the
Pedigree view. You can set it off, for right-click or for automatic
(hover/rollover). There is an Edit individual button on the popup. You can
also double-click an individual in the popup list to make them the primary.
Siblings of the primary would be on the popup list for the parent.

One thing I've noticed is in automatic mode if you hover and get the popup for
one individual, then move away, you can't get the popup for that individual to
reactivate until after you've activated the popup for a different individual.

I don't see it either. Unless I'm missing something, It is no longer possible
to highlight a person on the pedigree either. Is this another step backward?
I see that you can right-click on a name there, and view lists, but that
doesn't buy you any other option, like to navigate to one of them. That means
you cannot see on the pedigree view any relationship except for the left-most
individual. Maybe that is okay, but it doesn't seem as friendly as it used to
be.

Re: [LegacyUG] v8 Hide/Show Spouse/Child and Siblings List

2013-12-01 Thread JV Leavitt
I don't see it either. Unless I'm missing something, It is no longer
possible to highlight a person on the pedigree either. Is this another
step backward? I see that you can right-click on a name there, and view
lists, but that doesn't buy you any other option, like to navigate to
one of them. That means you cannot see on the pedigree view any
relationship except for the left-most individual. Maybe that is okay,
but it doesn't seem as friendly as it used to be.

Regarding Spit Screen view -- there is a very small Icon next to the word
"About" in the upper right hand corner of the screen.  The Icon looks like a
cascaded double-window, like the Icon you see on any window that is maximized.
Clicking on that will put the two panels into split screen view again. Paul
Rogers is right, however, that there is no "Window" item on the ribbon -- it
isn't on any menu bar.

The Icon does not appear if you have two panels showing, but if you maximize
one of the panels, the Icon re-appears, and you can get the two panels to
re-appear by using the Icon again, even if you have two panels of the same
database.

If you are not in split screen mode, and click on the Icon, the panel is put
into a non maximized mode, and clicking on the square box shaped Icon next to
the X will put the screen back to maximized, just as it does on the windows of
any program.

Works fine for me. I split screen, maximised one panel. Clicked on the
Restore button/icon and the maximised panel returned to previous
half-screen size, alongside the other half-screen panel.

Too many questions Pam.

Here is answers to the Mac compatibility.

I have been running L8 on two different Macs for several months during testing
of L8:

1. iMac using VMWare 6 with Windows 7 -- no problems.

2. iMac using Parallels 8 & 9 - no problems.

3. MacBook Pro - 2012 - using Parallels in both a Windows 7 and Windows 7

Good luck on your other questions.

or b) the 8.0 media(I’m reading it’s easier to use) OR c) use Heritage
Collection Software Suite to “organize” and manage the media? How do Heritage
features compare with what’s available in Legacy? Obviously, a broad question,
maybe no simple answer, but is there a good link to read/learn more about
this? I don’t want to waste a lot of time by not choosing the most efficient
way to import/link to photos/ media, or even audio files?.

2. What experiences have people had using Legacy with Mac and either
Crossover or Fusion installed? Does it affect program function in any way? What
would be the negative considerations I would need to know about?

3. Are there any minimum specifications/models/years I need to consider
if I did go with a MAC book pro? I “think”? audio/video files can only be
“linked” to the program anyway, is that correct?

4. Has anyone had any experience using one of the “convertible” type
units, e.g. Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 2 or Thinkpad with Legacy or any of the new
genealogy apps in a Wifi setting (or otherwise)? Or would it be better to get
a full desktop type and consider a tablet or Ipad or something more designed
for Wifi? (am thinking if I visit an archive, or use microfilm readers with a
scanner)

5. What about Windows * and Legacy? Any issues to consider? I have
Windows 7 now and would preferably like to stick with that however . . .
.choices??

6. If I want to do more family “interviews” with audio, etc, which type
programs would be most compatible with such audio/historical programs as
mentioned by many of the Legacy webinar speakers?

7. Should I consider the #/type of ports, slots, etc in making a computer
choice, considering the direction genealogical software/media/app programs such
as Legacy are going? In other words, what type of machine/ flexibility should I
consider, so that the machine can outlast at least a few years of tech advances?

Ok, enough. Thanks for any input! Sincerely, Pam

Re: [LegacyUG] V8 media and ?Mac conversion usage questions

2013-11-30 Thread Leon Chapman
Too many questions Pam.
Here is answers to the Mac compatibility.

I have been running L8 on two different Macs for several months during
testing of L8:
1. iMac using VMWare 6 with Windows 7 -- no problems.
2. iMac using Parallels 8 & 9 - no problems.
3. MacBook Pro - 2012 - using Parallels in both a Windows 7 and Windows 7
environment - no problems.

Good luck on your other questions.

2013-11-30 Thread Sherry/Support
Pam,

I'm not a Mac user so I can't answer most of your questions, but it
seems to me that if you can get a copy of Windows 7, that would be the
preferred Windows version if you get Parallels, Fusion or Bootcamp.

WINE and Crossover XI don't need Windows installed. Crossover is the
"supported" version of WINE - WINE is free..

Thanks for the tip on minimizing the ribbon! It really does make a difference

display the ribbon only when required. Problem solved!

Paul,

The first thing I did was to minimze the Ribbon bar - you'll find that makes a
*big* difference in the font sizes.

Right click on the menu (where the ribbon names are) and select "Minimize the
Ribbon"

If that helps, go to Options > Customize and in option 1.4, select "Start with
ribbon minimized".

The option on the interface is temporary.

Another thing you can do is click on Design (upper right corner), select Font
and then select Large or Extra Large. That enlarges the buttons on the ribbon
bar.

But you'll find just having the ribbon bar minimized makes a world of
difference. When you click on a tab, the ribbon drops down over the Parents and
you can select your options.

Sherry

Re: [LegacyUG] V8 Family View

2013-11-27 Thread Sherry/Support
Paul,

The first thing I did was to minimze the Ribbon bar - you'll find that
makes a *big* difference in the font sizes.

Right click on the menu (where the ribbon names are) and select
"Minimize the Ribbon"

If that helps, go to Options > Customize and in option 1.4, select
"Start with ribbon minimized".

The option on the interface is temporary.

Another thing you can do is click on Design (upper right corner),
select Font and then select Large or Extra Large. That enlarges the
buttons on the ribbon bar.

But you'll find just having the ribbon bar minimized makes a world of
difference. When you click on a tab, the ribbon drops down over the
Parents and you can select your options.

Sincerely,
Sherry

Re: [LegacyUG] V8 Family View

2013-11-27 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Paul,
You CAN do something about the Ribbon. There's a little arrow on the
right which minimises the ribbon. Click on the a Ribbon header and
the Ribbon pops up until you've chosen the function you want and then
disappears again.

You can also customise the Quick Access Toolbar top left. You do this
by clicking on the Design on the right of the Ribbon, then Toolbar.
You may need to close and re-open Legacy to see your selections.
There's a Maximum of 10 icons that can permanently be placed on the
Quick Access Toolbar. Other icons can be added for the session by
right clicking on them in a Ribbon and choosing to add to the Quick
Access Toolbar.

You may want to increase your minimum font.

Some of the issues where it appears to us there's more room for
things relate to Legacy being international and some languages
requiring more room.

Legacy 8 does not always resize correctly when you change window
size. If this happens for you, just resize it again slightly and
things should pop back to normal for that window size.

[LegacyUG] V8 Family View

2013-11-27 Thread Paul Gray
Hi,

I'm struggling to configure Family View to give me the same 'large fonts'
that I was able to get in V7. I am using the same settings in both V7 and
V8. In Screen Fonts, Data is set Verdana 10 pt, Labels to Arial 10 pt,
"stretch fonts when resizing is checked", and min font size is 10, max font
size 99.

The names, dates, and location data displayed in Family View are
significantly smaller in V8, I estimate 2-3 pts.

Some reasons:

1. The new ribbon takes up more space than the old toolbar.

2. In the Parents boxes at the top, a line has been added with the word
Parents with a plus sign on the right to add parents. This takes up one
third of the available space. If that wasn't there, there would literally be
50% more space to stretch the fonts for the parents names.

3. In the Husband and Wife boxes, there is a fair amount of white space
under the names. The names themselves have a very similar size to V7, but
the extra white space below (with FS arrows if turned on), leave less real
estate for the vital events below.

4. In the children section, there is the title "Children" with icon to the
right to access the functions we used to right click to access (e.g. child
sorting). Not really sure why this results in smaller fonts as they did take
away one child line ( now 4 vs. 5) to accommodate the 'title' line.

I'm sure there is nothing I can do about the ribbon, that's just the way
things are. But, are there any options to otherwise change the elements of
family view so that I could get bigger fonts.

I don't think this is a show-stopper, but one of the things I liked about
Legacy V7 was how I could get large easy to read screen fonts. They have
certainly maintained the ability to have a variable font size to take
advantage of large monitors, but the putting additional 'titles' and white
space on the screen has effectively reduced the font size of names, dates
and locations.

Hoping there is some setting I can tweak, if not I will live with it.

Re: [LegacyUG] V8 shared events

2013-08-01 Thread Brian/Support
There is a Note specific to the person's role which can be customized
for the person who is sharing the event. This is in addition to the Note
for the main event for the person who is the primary for the event.

In the census scenario the head of household would be the primary and
each other person would have the role of household member. You can also
create your own custom roles for an event as well if you find an entry
for other than household member. In one census in my family file, a
person is listed as a boarder in my great grandfather's home on the 1881
census in England. In other cases there may be a maid, live-in
housekeeper etc. enumerated with a family where you may want to add
custom roles.

When I create census events for the members of a family, these are not
identical as I use the description and notes fields to personalise each
person's event.

Typically the description contains age and occupation and the notes may contain
descriptive info such as the number of children or immigration date or house
size etc. One sentence may read:

On 2 Apr 1911 he appeared on the census at Highfield Farm Cottage, Writtle,
Essex as a 45-year-old agricultural labourer.

but his wife's sentence might read:

On 2 Apr 1911 she appeared on the census at Highfield Farm Cottage, Writtle,
Essex as a 44-year-old who had been married for 21 years with eight children,
three of whom had died.

Will this scenario be possible as a shared event under V8? In other words, do
shared events have to be identical for all people or can they be customised so
that the basic event is shared but the details are different for each person?

Ron,

I quite agree, if it turns out that it does take to the year end, as was
suggested in another post, then I would expect that it will be less buggy,
and perhaps, have more enhancements that it would have if released much
earlier. It should be appreciated that in the long run it will be much
better for all of us if the programmers take their time in finalising their
ideas and coding.

We'll have to wait for the release to find out what will be in v8.

Or Geoff's presentation mentioned in another email - whichever comes first.

Actually the question is, "Will Geoff be presenting a BETA version of Legacy 8"?

Otherwise, what's up with the marketing folks? Why is there no fanfare about
this? You'd think that they would want to drum up as much publicity as possible
rather than keep Legacy 8 a big secret. With that being said, I surmise that
Geoff will be presenting a BETA version. Just my 2 cents.

By the way, I think the mail server burped because myself and apparently others

The "freebie" upgrade was historically given if you purchased the Deluxe
was within x number of days (can't remember the exact number) prior to the
release of the new version.

For years, the discount upgrade applied if you have the immediately
previous version of Deluxe (for example, if you had v5 Deluxe, then you
could get discount for v6) but that was changed to make the discount
available to those who have previously purchased *any* Deluxe version.

I don't know what the plans are for v8.

The discounted pricing has always applied to an established Deluxe user,
IIRC. The New Purchasers have traditionally been given a free upgrade
if they had just purchased the Deluxe version immediately prior to the
release of a new Major upgrade.

Hi,

I was able to get in familysearch.org about two weeks ago, but when I tried
it just now, it failed to log me in.  I wonder why they do this when it will
become availabe for us soon?  It sure doesn't make any sense.  Actually I have
used that site since about 2002, with no problems.  If they don't stop this,
maybe we will have to remove our trees on ancestry.com.  I have clicked on
several trees, already, and some of the trees are gone.  Just a thought!

2011-12-06 Thread Nannette Fretwell
Tim, I am an indexer and an arbritrator and can still only get to the New
Family Search like every other non-LDS member. It's never changed for me.
In fact...I signed up with a different name, email address, etc and still
cannot get access like an LDS member.

I'll just have to wait until they open more of it to the general public, I
guess.

Re: [LegacyUG] V8

2011-12-06 Thread Kathy Meyer
I also thought that was true. Perhaps what we are thinking about is the
records access, not NFS. Some of the records that are indexed actually
belong to other subscription sites (like ancestry.com for instance); when
you search the familysearch records index, LDS users will actually have
access to the image as well as the index because of the arrangement made
between the two parties. Additionally, non-member indexers will also have
that little perk to be able to access the image of those indexed records.
That was such a long time ago so who knows what has actually transpired
since then. Ancestry.com had asimilar arrangement for indexers FYI but I
don't know if they still do that.

Hopefully it won't be long that everyone who would like to access NFS will
be able to do so. Better to introduce it slowly because the capacity for
people to really mess up the database is scary :-/

2011-12-06 Thread David C Abernathy
Yes, you have summed it up right. Family Search and some of the OEMs of
software are using the term “General Public”, but it is being released to very
few non members of the LDS church. I signed up to be a early indexer, but was
not given any access. So I have been waiting for a LONG time.

I think it just may be a big waste of time, if one is not doing any of the
“Church” related record tracking.

Thanks,

So...just to confirm, the consensus is that NEW Family Search is still not open
to the general public though a very luck few have been granted access but only
when they create a brand new account (not connected to their current Family
Search account)

Does that sum it up correctly?

Also if you are registered at new.FamilySearch.org, the LDS church has
been giving access to non members on a random selection to access

Under "Do I need to register?" the site says "No. You do not need to
register if you already have an account for the new FamilySearch
website, FamilySearch indexing, the Research Wiki, or the new version of
www.familysearch.org.

You may sign in using the user name and password you chose."

That's a completely different log-in than the one for new.FamilySearch.org

You have to go to new.FamilySearch.org and register for a password to that site.

That doesn't mean you'll get to log in right away... it could take
awhile for you to get the log-in for NFS.

Check the website for more details and if you have any further
questions about getting a log-in, you'll need to contact someone with
the church (there's probably a link on the website)

waiting so it appears they're still issuing them in a roll-out manner.

I'm already registered for familysearch.org and when I try to login using
that id/password I still get the message that says my account is not ready
for new.familysearch.org. Are people gaining access by just creating a new
account with a different id and password?

It is available. Just go to new.FamilySearch.org and register to get
your log-in.

still waiting so it appears they're still issuing them in a roll-out
manner.
