There's a redpaper that talks about this. See:

Securing Linux for zSeries with a Central z/OS LDAP Server

You might also want to check out the ABC's redbooks (which ever one
 deals with RACF and security).

That would be Volume 6.

Mark,

Is your picture from the Orlando presentation still valid when virtualization

be able to run on so few IFLs. The general thinking in my company is that
VMware is a lot simpler route to attack that.

Red Hat 7.1 and 7.2 were not commercial product offerings from Red Hat.
Red Hat introduced its commercial offering with Red Hat Enterprise Linux
2.1, which was not offered on the s390. So I believe that there is
confusion here between what is Red Hat Enterprise Linux and what is Linux.

The very first versions of Red Hat for the mainframe were Red Hat Linux 7.2
for 31-bit systems, and Red Hat Linux 7.1 for 64-bit systems. Note that
these did _not_ include Enterprise in the names. When we were writing the
Distributions Redbook, only 31-bit versions of Linux were available, and
only a beta test version of Red Hat Linux 7.2 for S/390 was available. When
we were writing the book, it had a 2.2.19-0.07
kernel, and an experimental (never worked for me) 2.4.3 kernel. The GA
version of 7.2 was announced on December 19, 2001.

After 7.2/7.1, the next version released was indeed Red Hat Enterprise
Linux 3 for S/390 and zSeries in 2003.

That's because that's what the actual utilization on those servers was. Even
so, according to my IBM contact that did the sizing, the cost of a VMware

There are a lot of smaller applications, that don't need GB databases G. And

I strongly recommend avoiding profile and config files which are
specific to a particular shell. Better would be to instead source
/etc/profile and ~/.profile and teach your users to do the same.
Not only does Linux have alternatives to BASH but if you're in
any mixed environment you possibly won't have BASH on the others
(BSD, OpenVM, AIX, Solaris, HP, whatever).

BASH has a lot of cool extensions which people are tempted to use.
(Using them is fine and good, but entrenching BASH in the rest
of your system is foolish.) Remember to start with #!/bin/bash
if you want BASH-specific features. But don't expect such a script
to run on your non-Linux systems right away.

Re: Oracle, zlinux, and virtualization

PMFJI

On my smaller Oracle 10g R2, under SLES 10 SP2, with OEM running, I've
been able to get the SGA down to 140 MB, with PGA of 16 MB. This can run
in a vsize of 600 MB with dual prioritized vdisk for swapping.

There are a lot of smaller applications, that don't need GB databases G.
And as we scale up, they can get more memory, WHEN, it is proven that
they need it. The rules of thumb from the Intel side, just don't apply
with the mainframes.

Sounds a little like our Red Hat rep who told our Linux guys yesterday that IBM is likely
to get rid of z/VM in favor of KVM, because why would IBM want to support multiple

sure make it hard to sell mainframe Linux as a solution internally. Simple statements
like these to the wrong people are nearly irreversibly damaging.

This strikes me as odd, considering that Oracle is encouraging their z/OS

Not what the Oracle rep (thought they were) was talking
about. Works great is not the same as supported or
certified. The fact is, Oracle does certify and support
Linux on System z running as a z/VM guest, but that's only

I added the paging volumes this morning to ensure we had enough in place.

This is our VM Test LPAR and the sum of the virtual storage of the linux guests
is 14G so things are tight. What should be done first?

1. Further reduce guest storage. We have done this already but there may be a
way to squeeze some more.
2. What about messing with SRM STORBUF etc?
3. Anything else besides ordering more storage? I am actually looking for
something non-disruptive. Taking down a 6 LPAR z9 to add more memory to a test
lpar does not go over well. We tend to tag this stuff on when production changes
are made.

You're on the right track.

I'd try storbuf 300 300 300 for immediate relief from the E3.

But you are still overcommitted by a lot, more real storage (or smaller,
fewer servers) is in order.

With z/VM 5.4 you can add storage dynamically. Course, that assumes
you've got some sitting in the z9 doing nothing at the moment...

I added the paging volumes this morning to ensure we had enough in place.

This is our VM Test LPAR and the sum of the virtual storage of the linux
 guests
is 14G so things are tight.

We tend to tag this stuff on when production
 changes
 are made.

Re: Contrainted System - What to do first and am I missing anything.

2008-12-03 Thread Tyler Koyl
Firstly, thanks everyone for you help. I did set storbuf as recommended.

David:

I try and keep quickdsp off as much as possible as well. Many fruitless
arguments have ensued. It may be overkill to have it set 'ON' on a test LPAR
but swplt01 is a firewall, swplt05 is a WAS portal. It is 'on' partly to give my
unix admins a warm fuzzy feeling. I am beseeched at all times by Unix admins and
Oracle DBAs who don't understand, and therefore, do not trust z/VM scheduling.
It is an uphill battle at times but progress is being made, and as my knowledge
comfort level increases, so does theirs.

I'm sure the people at Red Hat who were there at the time would be very
surprised to hear that. Red Hat was generating revenue from Red Hat Linux long
before Red Hat Advanced Server (not Enterprise Linux) 2.1 was released.

Before RHEL there was Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 3.1.

Basically, RHLAS was RHL 7.2 packaged as a commercial offering with
support. Before that, RH was offering support for RHL (how else to make
some money?), but RHAS as the beginning of the differentiation between
free to obtain and not-free. Previously one could choose between free
downloads and packaged options (including downloaded with support).

RHLAS was subsequently renamed to RHEL.

It's RHL 7.2 and 7.1 that I was recalling, for IBM mainframes.

When RH released RHL 7.3, there was no corresponding upgrade of RHLAS
which remained based off RHL 7.2.

In the RHL series, 7.0 was the last RHL with a 2.2 kernel, RHL 7.1 the
first with 2.4.

Tyler,

As David indicated, QUICKDSP is a very big stick that has specific uses. Once
you
implement Barton's suggestion, you may want to handle prioritizing individual
virtual
machines with SET SHARE. Be careful there as well, the relative numbers are
just that,
relative to each other.
