X Terminal with Mandrake

2001-11-26 Thread Matt . Carpenter

I'm familiar with using Caldera COL3.1 and eD2.4/eS2.3 as an X terminal,
but for the life of me I can't seem to get Mandrake to work. Is there
anything different involved?

Thanks,
Matt

Re: fighting the worm (enough of this already)

2001-09-20 Thread Matt . Carpenter

I think it is definitely MORE up in the air than before. What's changed
with Nimda is the incorporation of not only exploits but multiple exploits
with intelligence to wreak far more havoc than before. Also, most worms
until this point targetted servers, with mail viruses focussing on email,
and very little IE exploits. This one hits the servers from the clients
and the clients from the servers.

As more of the old exploits are used in tandem and with more intelligence.
I believe that people will be force to take notice. What happens after
that is up in the air. Thoughts of that article about TCP/MS come back in
scary waves, though.

hey Dennis-

just wanted to drop a note and check up on you. How is life treating you?
Did you get some good sailing in this year? How has writing been lately?
I'm sure that there has been plenty going on to keep you hoppin'. How do
you get to choose what you write about? Is is your choice or are
assignments handed to you from someone above?

Well, Julie, Rachel (15 mo) and I leave for camping this Sunday. We'll
attempt what I am certain will be an exciting and painful 4 days of tent
camping. This is kind of a trial run for the little chickie. We need to
see how she likes camping, and hopefully start the hopefully short process
of getting her used to it. It IS in the long-term plans, and since Rachel
is as well, she'd better adapt ;)

Well, I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Re: eW3.1 and KDE2.2

2001-08-31 Thread Matt . Carpenter

I have had the same problem with just a standard install. Your best bet is
to look at /var/log/gui for details on what is happening at X start and why
it's resetting.

Mine seems to happen when I remove the "vga=791" from the kernel line in
GRUB's menu.lst file. The VGA parm makes my CLI difficult to read (tiny
characters) but X seems to work. When I remove it or replace it with the
"vga=274" which was placed at install on another eW3.1 box, X doesn't
start.

Hi folks,
Considering all the trouble I've been having getting my eD2.4 install
up to snuff, I decided to try migrating to eW3.1, which I have
installed on a test partition. I downloaded and installed kernel 2.4.9
and X4.1.0 without too much difficulty. I then tried to start
installing KDE2.2 from the SRPMs I was using under eD2.4, but ended up
with some compile issues. Rather than debug that, I decided to
download the pre-compiled RPMs. After installing all packages, I tried
to telinit 5 to start KDE2.2, but it doesn't want to work.
kdm starts, but before a login screen displays, X restarts. This
happens repeatedly (X starts - doesn't get to kdm login - x restarts)
until kdm apparently gives up and I get an error message, 'Id "gu"
respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes'. If I don't telinit 3,
then the cycle gets repeated in 5 minutes.
'startx' works. I get an xsession and can run non-kde programs
(composing this in Netscape), but when trying to run KDE apps from
plain X, they fail with an error "error while loading shared
libraries: /opt/kde2/lib/libkdeui.so.3: undefined symbol:
stylChange_8QToolBarR6QStyle", but I'm not at all sure whether that's
relevent to my problem.
/var/log/messages has:
kdm[1781]:Greeter returned non-zero exit code 32512
modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-81
kdm[1802]:Greeter returned non-xero exit code 32512

So this looks like an error with kdm, or kdmrc.
Any clues?
Thanks,
Tim

cannot boot from 03.90 I have had a brand NEW motherboard
fall over and die (DFI with DDR ram). Seeing that I had to re-install I
made
both /boot and / as ext2 and left the rest as reiserfs. On reboot the

So on this setup of mine reiserfs is not a real option, it also shows that
its
not a reliable file system as yet either, as it MUST work properly under
all

StarOffice 5.2 on eW3.1

2001-08-28 Thread Matt . Carpenter

I have an install of eW3.1 running and was attempting to get Star Office
5.2 installed on it. When installing with the -net option, I was unable to
complete the installation regardless of options (standard or custom), it
always errored out with similar messages at the same point in the
installation stating that it couldn't write particular files. OpenOffice
did something very similar. When installing 5.2 WITHOUT the -net option,
it installed fine. The -net option was all installed from a normal user,
"xhost localhost", and su-ed to root for install. It stated "possibly not
enough disk space" but that's bunk.

TIA

Re: Easy hook up of a laptop to a home network

2001-08-27 Thread Matt . Carpenter

I would recommend either the Hub with BNC connector or wireless. You can
do direct PC-PC networking using a crossover cable (1236 go to 3612) but
that limits you and doesn't really solve the problem. The problem is not
that your son's laptop doesn't have BNC, it's that your equipment is
outliving it's worth. If you choose the cross-over solution, you have
added nearly zero flexibility to your network. At least with a 10Base-2/T
hub you'll be able to add both RJ45/BNC hosts to your network in the
future. With a wireless solution, there is an added layer of complexity,
but from everyone I've spoken to, it's worth it.

I know they make tranceiver cables that go BNC to RJ45, Do they make 'em
the
other way? I think I remember seeing them when I bought the tranceivers for
a
couple old RS6000's we have at work (Microchannel). Check out your local

5) To have all of this information stored in a central database

You still didn't say what the problem was. Are you getting errors?

The lilo.conf that you quoted below writes LILO to /dev/hda6, and *NOT*
the MBR of hda. Also, it indicates that you keep your kernel(s) in /
instead of /boot.

What is the IP address of the external interface of your firewall and it's
default gateway?

I have also seen multihomed machines with improperly configured proxies or
firewalls be identified by their internal address. This might also be what
is happening here.

It doesn't matter whether your IP's are static or dynamic. What matters is
whether they are registered or not (if they're in those ranges already
listed, they are NOT)

I am on the @HOME network. I was just told that alhough we appear to have
static ip's they are really dynamic IP's, changed rarely if at all.
I was getting repeated attempts by 10.91.193.1 to offer dynamic ip
assignment, for example. I was told that was a server for @HOME upstream
from me. It may be (JUST WILD
GUESSING) that although we think we are on the internet, we may really be
on
a private network run by @HOME, thus allowing this private IP number to
be used.
Still guessing, this may be some stuff being broadcaste from @HOME central,
for whatever reason. I just block it all.

2001-08-20 Thread Matt . Carpenter

First off, the 192.168.x.x is a reserve address space, which you should NOT
be seeing, unless you don't have any registered ip addresses and your
border router is a 192.168.x.x address as well.
Secondly, this is multicast traffic, which is pretty selectively allowed.
Route discovery protocols use this type of traffic, as do some streaming
technologies.

If you have a registered IP Addy on your firewall's external interface,
this traffic is most likely spoofed traffic and can be safely discarded
(with the proper security response) I would contact the ISP and let them
know of the issue and ask that it is resolved if they aren't the ones doing
it.
None of these address ranges belong to anyone. 10.x.x.x,
172.16.x.x-172.21.x.x, and 192.168.x.x are all reserved address spaces, for
use internally in your network. ISP's should NOT allow packets with this
source address to ever traverse the Internet.

Re: delete email from server

2001-08-16 Thread Matt . Carpenter

Neither. I use KMail all the time. I'm finding it more pretty than
useful, however, and am looking for a good IMAP client. I've been playing
with Althea lately but have heard of one from the Kompany called Aethera
(or something like that), which is supposed to include some PIM stuff as
well.

I have times when KMail seems to "forget" that it's seen ANY messages and
red/l's again. This doesn't happen all the time, and I've found months in
between. Unfortunately with this option, KMail forgot to include the
"delete from server when deleted from mail" option, so I'm finding myself
in a situation of d'ling 480mb this time. I'm pretty frusterated. When
mentioning this option to the KMail team, I was told that it wasn't going
to happen. I don't believe I heard a response to the IMAP request.

I know some other mail agents have "Leave on server" and also a "Download
only
new messages" option as well.

I would guess that either there is another option you need to check to have
it
only grab mail it hasn't already d/l'ed, or Kmail (which I am neither a fan
nor
user of) is too simple to have that option.

Here are my steps.

Disable nwclient,IPX,and RIP/AUX daemons using LISA.
reboot. ** maybe not needed
grab ncpfs-2.2.0.18 from http://freshmeat.net
cd /usr/src
tar xzvf ncpfs-2.2.0.18.tar.gz
cd ncpfs*
./configure
make
make install
vi /etc/lib.so.conf
append a line "/usr/local/lib" to the file and save+exit
ldconfig
ipx-configure --auto_interface=on --auto_primary=on
modprobe ncpfs
slist ** servers names appeared **
ncpmount -S fs1 -U guest ** password prompted!

1. Still, the ipx network number colision would pop up. Why?
Already using the /etc/sysconfig/ipx suggested by Caldrea KB.
2. Is Caldera's client crippled?
3. Where can I find newsgroups specialized in dosemu?

A... Ok. Thanks. Please let me know if and when you get these back
up. Thanks! I liked 7.1 but the installed software wasn't current enough.
I want to spend a bit of time living with SuSE 7.2 in a few different
configurations to learn where it fits in the networks I have influence
over. Right now I have had to recommend the expensive COL Server 3.1
because I know it inside and out, and know what kind of support I can
expect, mainly with regard to updated packages, Security alerts, etc..
Perhaps as I get to know SuSE better, that will change. I had a hard time
stomaching it, since Linux is a hard enough sell in Microsoft-ville anyway.
But it's getting easier. We'll see if the client bites. The guy selling
it is pretty sharp. He thinks they'll go for it, since I vouch for the
support and quality.

Re: IP NetWare Client for Linux

2001-07-17 Thread Matt . Carpenter

I thought that Caldera's client did this... Is that not the case?

Well, Novell's stance on this is that they are moving away from Mac and
Unix clients for NetWare in favor of their new initiative of Native File
Access. Effectively, this is going to mean that NetWare boxes are going to
allow SMB access to their fileservers. This is great for those of us who
use Samba and know it's strength in Unix, but it's depressing for those who
understand F&P sharing using IPX vs SMB over TCP/IP. IPX had its problems,
but it has always been lightning fast compared to it's SMB brother, at
least when compared to an NT server. I haven't compared Linux to NetWare
yet. We'll have to see how this turns out.

I've had good results with the ipxutils and ncpfs packages. Check
freshmeat.net and rpmfind.net. These work well with NetWare 4.11, I'm
not sure about 5.x, but they may be worth a try. There are a couple of
GUI-type frontends available too, but I don't know much about them, as I
just use CLI.

Re: Is there a SAMBA doctor in the house???

2001-07-11 Thread Matt . Carpenter

I do two ways of SMB "clienting". For the persistent connections which I
want to access from CLI, I use smbmount to graft a foreign SAMBA share into
my filesystem. For the quick and dirty "There's a spread-sheet on that box
I need to see or change,etc..." I use KDE2.1's smb:// or 2.1.1's rlan:/
features. They've not been well-announced, but they are pretty sweet.
What I hope the KDE team does is join these two technologies for something
akin to a "Map Drive" option in Konqueror which allows the share to be
mapped either anywhere in the FS tree, or possibly in /samba/ or someplace
easy to find.

That's well and good, but the SxS is no longer Caldera specific. Perhaps
when I get some time, I'll try out all the techniques referenced here
and write up a generic SxS on it. I can test all with Mandrake 8.0,
Caldera eD2.4 and RedmondLinux (Build 35). The biggest obstacle will be
that elusive time thing ;)

Re: ssh2 issues

2001-07-11 Thread Matt . Carpenter

I had added my box in /etc/hosts on the SolBox before writing that last
email. Good question, though...

The -v options showed me that it's hanging after authentication, while
requesting X11 forwarding and connection spoofing... I give it a -x option
and it logs in no problem... Which explains why it would work from a VC,
but not through X. I still don't understand it... but at least I know how
to make it work... I'd still like not to have to type -x or +x between
different systems... The kicker is that X Forwarding is configured on the
box, and this is a swap out box for another SolBox... and I never had this
issue with THAT box... I'll have to delve into the sshd2_config on the
server. The other issue is that I MUST use ssh2 now, even though the
server is configured to bounce down to ssh1 if needed.

Thanks Lonni.

Run ssh with the -v switch to see what's going on. Could be some weird
reverse lookup problem. Does your IP address properly resolve on the
Solaris box?

Re: Stupid newbie network question

2001-07-11 Thread Matt . Carpenter

POI-
You might want to note that the machine you run the application on (ie. NOT
the one you are typing at), needs to be able to resolve whatever your local
hostname is, as TELNET sets up the DISPLAY environment variable as:
DISPLAY=hostname:0.0

So if your machine is not resolvable by DNS, you might consider adding an
entry in /etc/hosts for your local workstation.

I use ssh with XForwarding stuff turned on (in the client config and server
config both)
I like that better because I don't have to deal with the above issue, not
to mention I can run X Apps securely over the Internet without poking holes
in my firewall!
Note that running through ssh is a little bit slower, but it only uses the
established connection! Pretty sweet, eh?

This worked flawlessly. Well, not quite flawlessly, I had trouble
disconnecting from the server. I ended up switching to a console

and killing X and kdm. There's gotta be a better way to close the session
than that. I'll keep looking into it.

This MUST be executed from within X.

"xhost downstairs" tells X to open up access to "downstairs" so that
"downstairs" is able to communicate with your video/kb/mouse.
A virtual console doesn't have access to tell X this.

Even if you don't choose SuSE, MAKE SURE YOU TRY IT! It is a different
feel, but it's nice! That and the fact that the 7 CD's for Professional
have a huge amount of CATALOGUED software... What do I mean by this? Do
you remember the "Specify Selection" option W3.1 and LTP gave you when
installing, allowing you to choose the apps to install? Well, imagine
something like that which allows un-/installing entire software selections
(notifying and/or automagically installing dependent packages). We're
talking INTELLIGENCE programmed in!

Other than that, it has a nice look and feel, like it was polished a bit.

Re: Stupid newbie network question

2001-07-10 Thread Matt . Carpenter

VNC is like a Remotely Possible. But it is unnecessary to do what you are
trying to do

X-Windows is by nature a networked windowing system. This means that it
can act like Terminal Services, allowing multiple sessions at the same time
across the network, as opposed to sharing the only one (that shows up on
the computer screen) like RP or pcAnywhere.

Study the /etc/X11/kdm/Xaccess file. You do NOT want a Chooser setup,
because that (IIRC) just acts as a "Central Directory" for available X
Servers to log into.
I (on my protected home network) uncommented the line with a single "*" on
it, meaning accept a GUI-login connection from anyone. There are various
ACL capabilities in this file you may want to consider. Then, restart your
X-Server on the server host. (CTRL-ALT-BKPSC).

On the machine you'd like to log in FROM, you want to be in Runlevel 3
(CLI). From the commandline, type something like:

X -query

and it should bring up a GUI login screen. There are many better accounts
of this config, but I hope this serves as a decent overview.

Kruiser is one of the better ones for KDE1.x. I liked it a lot. If it
integrated better with KDE2, I'd probably still be using it. But KDE2 is
starting to do some good things now. Someday soon perhaps they will
include the ability to map and unmap "drives" so to speak, more like
grafting into the fs tree. It doesn't seem like it'd be too difficult.

Yes, I've been there... actually on google. The best resource for linux smb
browsers is at the samba website. What pains me most is... there's not a
lot to
choose from... Personally, I'm happy with text mode tools, etc... But I've
got
to get something on par with windows, that runs on kde 1.x...

I haven't considered kruiser... I'm under the impression it's a kde 2.x
app.
I'll look again.

Re: what's happening?

2001-07-07 Thread Matt . Carpenter
TCP 111, TCP515, TCP 12345 are all wellknown hacks.  It looks like you've been scanned for these hacks by some script kiddies.  Sure is enough to wake you up, though.  TCP 111 is RPC.  TCP515 is LPD, TCP 12345 is some sort of trojan, I think NetBus.  For more information on these hacks, check out http://www.securityfocus.com and search on these ports.  You want to look up who owns these address ranges (at www.arin.net) and email the people in charge of their security issues.  Include the logs, etc.. and voice your concerns.  Don't expect an answer, but you may receive one.  Either way, the incident is noted and you've pretty much done all you can do.  You most likely have not been hacked, but this is intrusive behavior and needs to be addressed."MW Chang (linuxisum)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Sent by: [EMAIL PROTECTED]07/07/2001 06:24 PM ZE8Please respond to linux-users To: Linux Users <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> cc: bcc: Subject: what's happening? SuSE update problem

2001-07-06 Thread Matt . Carpenter

Can anyone help me on this?

I am attempting to run SuSE Update over FTP on my laptop. Now SuSE handles
PCMCIA NIC's pretty strange... Whereas Caldera broke up the Device from
the Interface configuration, SuSE doesn't, but allows a "PCMCIA" settin for
the NIC. I'm at a loss because the Updater tells me I have no connection
to the network, although I can ftp to ftp.suse.com fine from the command
line...

Help??

SuSE 7.1 findings.

2001-07-06 Thread Matt . Carpenter

Ok. Now that I've been using SuSE 7.1Pro for a little while (very little),
I have found the following:

It is a very nice install (Wow, YaST2 is much better than YaST1). This is
the kind of installer that makes me want to have my mom watch while I
install the thing.
I like the default color schemes and configs (nice clock in KDM). I like
the xconsole, even if I don't know what to do with it at times.
Nice admin tools. The X tools are rather DrakX-esque and somewhat better.
So far I like them better than COAS. They seem a bit more complete and
friendlier.
Nice software selection! HUGE amount of software, including most of the
software I tar->RPM'd for eD2.4
ReiserFS! Cool! Scary Root Scheme! Cool! Comprehensive RPM-Management!
Sweet!
While I don't like GNOME/Enlightenment, some of the software I like and use
requires the libraries, so it's nice that they're all there.

JBuilder is a great addition... if it weren't only German!
No Other Java IDE's to speak of?
X doesn't come up right and I get a blank screen. I end up CTRL-ALT-F1-ing
and the ALT-F7-ing to get back to GUI login.

Overall, SuSE is a VERY nice distro. I am in the process of d/l-ing W31 to
check it out. I know comparing a d/l ISO to a purchased 7 CD set is not
fair, but W31 will have to soar pretty high over the beta to convince me to
give up SuSE... I just miss understanding how it's FS/Configs are laid out
the way I understand eD2.4.

Possibly more later.

Gotta love standards committees... You can look at 'em in one of two ways:

The Pigeon: Flap their wings, make a lotta noise, shit on everything and
fly away (much like consultants)

The Punching Bag/Equal Opportunity Offender: They are in the business of
pissing EVERYONE off because it's their job to come up with ONE solution.
If this didn't cause so much strife, there wouldn't be a NEED to have a
standards committee!

Re: building a new distro

2001-07-02 Thread Matt . Carpenter

I would be very interested in an article taking a look at the LSB and the
distros, now that the LSB has been out and published for a while. Are we
achieving the interoperability which was the goal of the LSB. If not, is
any distro doing better than the others? We as a Linux community should
consider supporting any such vendor as STANDARDS are the key strength of
Open systems. We need to encourage this philosophy. It took a lot of time
and effort to have these individuals come together and work on a
standard... something that has been a necessary goal for some time.

I second that motion. Mucho grassy ass.

I'm probably hallucinating from the coffee, but I can envision the
people on this list building a customized distribution that's quite
easily patched on a regular basis to keep current. Instead of a 16
 month
period between releases, members get a CD of updates to the libraries,

kernel, XFree, KDE, etc. via snail mail or built into an .iso to
download and burn once every 60 days or so. Besides, a distro built by

the group would evidence our distancing from: 1. Caldera, 2. hostile
licensing methods, and 3. excessive pricing structures, (regardless of

who made the distro). It's a lot easier said than done of course.

Nonetheless, keep the info coming, you're work is appreciated many
 times
 over.
I agree. I expounded these very thoughts and wishes myself some time ago. I
think Caldera has a lot of work to do to clarify it's licensing and sales
policies. I as one who has been looking forward to the release of the new
desktop version am somewhat dismayed by the apparent changes in policy. I'm
taking a wait and see attitude and giving the boyz from Orem a lot of rope.
Hopefully we won't all hang.

But the idea of an easily updateable version of a secure, free linux geared
toward the SOHO user is what I am searching for and perhaps LFS is the only
way I'll be able to get what I want. So I'm very interested.

Warren
