If the talibans are behind it. as seems probable at the moment, I hope the world communities can agree to crush them. Besides the unkown number who died in US they have murdered tens of thousands in Afgahnistan and burned their own cities to the ground. It's a bitter irony for the US government that it was the CIA who helped the talibans to power. While it is soothing to the emotions to vent anger in this manner, it is counter productive to actual solutions. What is needed is a concerted effort, world wide, to *STOP* all terrorism. Unfortunately, there are areas of the world where people feel free to allow terrorists to hide and mingle with the general population. Attacking these areas only allows you to become a terrorist, too, thus increasing the problem, not decreasing it. I would think this is a perfect case for Linux and distributed data. If all those people who conglomerate in the WTC each day were to telecommute, there wouldn't be such an obvious and easy target for terrorists. Secure networking is the only way to make this a reality. But heck, this is the *information* age, not the stone, bronze, iron, industrial or atomic age. Oh, crapola It is war, one we must now activly engage in and win. It will be a war like no other, with no rules of engagement. No Geneva convention as the other side does not follow those rules. When sand gets thrown in your eyes its time to abandon queensberry rules. No other way about it. If they could have been sure to get Bush they would have dropped one into the whitehouse also, but chose a target with more casualties instead. Bush in a bumbling, indecisive idiot and they want him to remain in place. We are under seige. Our borders are now CLOSED, airline traffic is halted, the net is clogged. We have no reliable means of coast to coast travel, amtrak is a joke. We are a changed country so we might as well jump in with both feet and get them bloody right of the bat. Heightened security is now the norm. The US military worldwide is now at delta, that is like you move, you die. We no longer will have life as we *knew* it in the US. And IMHO, for that reason someone in charge of the terrorist activity should die publicly as well as the leaders of countries that activly support and harbor the terrotists. The folks I spent two and a half hours with walking down over 100 flights of stairs were amazing. They were all calm and worked together to make sure everyone got down safely. There were four guys who carried a man in a wheel chair down 50 flights of stairs. Others were comforting those who were crying. What saddened me this morning was that these good people may have been in the buildings today when the buildings collapsed. I will never forget the experience or those great people. You misunderstand me. My point was that this is not a religious war for us, and shouldn't be. In terms of national security there must be a swift and complete elimination of whomever was responsible. Before someone becomes an apologist for the Muslims, name me a country where Muslims live in appreciable numbers where they do not cause violent disturbances. In the Middle East, the Muslims are fighting and killing until secular governments are taken over by religious leaders. I believe Syria and Iraq are two places where that has NOT happened because the secular leaders are just as vicious as the Muslims. In Algeria, the Muslims fighting to take over the government routinely slaughter civilians. In Egypt have we forgotten who killed Sadat after he made peace with Israel? Have we forgotten the slaughter of tourists in Egypt? The regime in Afghanistan is a pure Islamic dictatorship. Iran replaced its secular dictator with an Islamic dictatorship and promptly found itself in a brutal war to overthrow the secular dictatorship of Sadam Hussein. Sadam won because he was more brutal (nerve gas.) In Indonesian and the Phillipines, Muslims are engaged in violence, brutal killing violence, against non-Muslims. Indonesian used to be used to show the "gentle face of Islam." In Africa, Muslims kill and enslave non-Muslims in the Sudan. In Nigeria, Muslims are imposing Islamic law on non-Muslims. One hundred people were killed there in a city which has no history of inter ethnic violence on account of this on the last day of the Durban racism conference in S.A. I don't believe the Durban conference addressed this issue, although I could be wrong. In summary, any country with a substantial Muslim population is in for some bad times. That includes now many countries in Europe and the USA. In the USA, we have substantial populations of minorities. Only the Puerto Ricans (one time) and the Muslims (repeatedly in recent years) have carried out terrorist attacks against this country. That should tell you something. It would only take a few hours of training. Like the others, it allows for only one God, theirs, and allows of only one interpretation of God's will, their interpretation. However, Islam goes much farther. Much like Communism, which was supposed to be an economic theory but extended its authority to every aspect of human activity, Islam is supposed to be a religion but also controls all other aspects of life. By denying many rights to women, it maintains a high birth rate and thus overwhelms other groups, like modern Christians or Jews, which afford their women more rights and thus experience a lower birth rate. This influences current events. The Balkans are a good example of this. A great thorn of contention between Christian and Muslim groups, before they just starting killing each other, was the tendency of Muslin women to run away to marry Christian men, because these women wanted to escape the confines of Islamic law. The women who remained in Islam had a higher birth rate. Thus Kosovo converted from a Serb to Albanian majority with subsequent murderous attacks on the Serb minority. These attacks were based on nothing but a sense they were not getting their fair share. The Serbs responded to protect the Christian Serbs. The West objected to the heavy handed approach, and now we have troops in the Balkans who will never leave. They were sent to protect the Muslim majority. Now they are trying to keep these same Muslims from attacking Serbia and Macedonia. People who say Muslims are peaceful just haven't had the benefit of living near a large Muslim population yet. That may change in the near future. Notice the marked violence France is experiencing with its large and growing population of North African aka Muslims. For example, they just had a standoff with a North African who was using a missile launcher against the police. Gangs from North African ethnic suburbs around Paris have gone on rampages, even into Paris. These remarks may sound intolerant. They all based on fact and they are all realistic. Just because you say it can't happen here doesn't mean it won't. I spoke to a man who was over there when a guy was being executed (head cut off). He was out with his two kids walking and got caught up in the crowd. The crowd pushed him and his kids to the front for a good view of the beheading. It just occurred to me. The only two Presidents who opposed Israel building on the West Bank, Jimmy Carter and George Bush the First, were both attacked by certain lobbies and were one term Presidents. GB actually held up money for Israel, I seem to recall, earning the fury of some people. Jimmy Carter was also abused by the same people for opposing West Bank expansion. Mr. Clinton was a great friend of Israel and did nothing I know of to really discourage this expansion. All the fuss about the West Bank really exploded during Clinton's term. Clinton let this Ben Laden guy live after the embassy bombings, despite his high profile bombing of Afghanistan and that drug factory in the Sudan. He left town just in time. This country will be cleaning up his messes for a long time. What confirmation of the wisdom of allowing only two terms for President. SO, I have to conclude, that the American voters backed politicians who supported expansion by Israel into the West Bank. Why they were unmindful of potential consequences of such actions is a mystery. Since 5.30 am this morning I have listened/watched to what happened in the US. I thought that i would get online and offer my sympathies to the citizens of that country and tell you what I thought. However something stopped me as I thought what I am seeing and hearing is the first knee jerk reaction of a peoples that are in shock. I also live in a complacent country/society that is far away from all those clowns, idiots, bombers etc, that exist in other countries. We as a nation are rather insignificant on the world scene, anything that happened here would have little effect on world polotics, but the US, or GB, Russia thats different. I have read that which has been written by some users of this list and I hope that far more sanity will prevail with time. Ther are no winners in this type of terrorist attack anymore than all Christains are alike, are all muslims alike. In the middle ages there were some atrocious acts by so called pious christians against those that held slightly differing beliefs. You world may now in the light of what has happened stop and think why Australia has this 'Boat Peoples' problem. One must remembere they are _NOT_ refugees, they have money and pay their way to illegally force their way into this country. The ratio of men to women and children in the groups is about 10-15 to 1, there were 400 men in that contraversial group. Just for your information too, we have the biggest Muslim nation sitting just above us 280Mill to our 21mill, but so far the relations have been cordial. There have been incidents between Indonesia and Australia, but more internally than externally, we really do not want to annoy them either. Wea also have a problem here with some lebanese gangs in Sydney, that do not like being referred to as lebanese, btw they are shi'ite Muslims. I grew up in the beggining of WW11, in London and experienced first hand bombing, aand being bombed out when they flattened Liverpoool, where I had been sent to get me out of the so called 'terror bombing' 1940 style. I saw Belsen Belsen and Dachau in 1951. I also had a Stepfather here in Australia that was a prisoner of the Japs, Burma Road and Changi for 4 years. Someone said that the Japs at least targetted military and not civilians. Whoever it was was dead wrong, they did whatever they liked (Rape of Nanking). So for many a year this sort of thing has taken place but not with the terrible effect and immediacy that the new media can give it. It is unfortunate that the leader of the world politically, also becomes the main target of 'HATE' that the disaffected, twisted leadership use to cover their shortcomings. In hindsight this has all been predicated and all that was necessary was for them to wait till the US lowered its guard: became somewhat complacent. Dare I say thank god that they didn't use biological weapons as well;; This time! We see many movies whereby we become innured to the sort of thing that we saw today. I am sure that many who may have switched on at the crutial time would be forgiven if they thought they were watching such a movie, I did. I have fought guerillas and been in wars as many have.
