I didn't have any library dependency problems on my eDesktop system, but
I'm running update gtk and gimp-1.2.1-31.

I just compiled gimp-print-4.2.0 which directly supports the Lexmark
printers which seems to give considerably better print quality. I haven't
built this into the updated gimp rpm yet, but just did a ``make install''
after building.

To summarize what I did to get this working on Caldera eDesktop 2.4.

#!/bin/sh
ln -s /usr/LessTif/Motif1.2/lib/libXm.so.1.0.2 /usr/lib/libXm.so.2
checkpc -f
exit 0

I've been quite pleased with the z53's performance and output. I'm
especially happy with how quiet it is -- quite the contrast to older
inkjets, particularly my old Epson.

My sole gripe with the x53 is that the downloadable driver for it
from Lexmark requires GTK and GDK libraries:

libvdk.so.1.2.5:
libgtk-1.2.so.0 => not found
libgdk-1.2.so.0 => not found
libgmodule-1.2.so.0 => not found
libglib-1.2.so.0 => not found

And so for libvdkcompo.so.1.2.5 and libvdkgnome.so.1.2.5. Beyond
this, I've no complaints that can't be attributed to PEBCAK.

Blessed be,

I opted for a Lexmark color injet (the z53). I have never been

of the reasons I chose the Lexmark. When I'm a bit more flush, I will

As you would know, it's not so much the 'best' (tm) printer available in
Linux but more, the best driver available. For whatever reason, the Epson
(Stylus) series of printers has the better drivers: meaning simply that more
devel work has gone into the ghostscript upp files than most others.

I have a series of Epsons ending at the 660 model and have been satisfied
with the stc500.upp driver for above. So, although I wouldn't know what the
latest 'n greatest color inkjet printer is, this week, I would recommend
sticking to Epson anything solely on what I've said above.

If memory serves, Pam did an SxS for the 760 USB, it's probably still
current.

please look at Cups, it should use samba to your print server. my pserver is my wife's
NT box. I do have a netgear server box on the lan. Cups says it should be able to use
it.
My wife's nt box is connected to it and should still be able to use winders to set
printing.
Let you know more in the next week.

I used to do that all the time, when my laserjet was on the Winders
machine, but since I bought a faster color printer for the wife and
moved the laserject to my box, I don't need to do that. Also, I
changed from a LAN driven by the Winders box to a NetGear router, so I

things on the Winders box, and I hate that.

Umm...check auctions, most laser printers work (the are compatible with HP
bla bla) I picked up a Lexmark Optra S2420 (24 pages per min with LAN
interface) for Australian Dollars $500 thatz like US $250. It works like a
charm, they hava a duty cycle of 100.000 month and this one has barely done
65.000 so check ebay and good luck.

PS. I wouldn't recomend a bubble jet to anyone if you print more than 5
pages per day

My wife's Lexmark Z52 works nice and linux drivers are available. The
printer is well under $100 most everywhere. I just bought an HP 960C
and used the 970C drivers in COAS and it works too. It was just under
$200. Had a problem with long cables in both so I need to get the
expensive high-speed IEEE blah-blah cable.

For black and white stuff I use a HP 500, cheap, almost universal, and reliable.
For color the Canon S400. It sells for around $80 and uses four cartridges. One
for black, three for the standard colors. Makes it kind of nice if one color
runs out you don't have pitch out all the cartridges, just replace the one that
run out of ink. Cheaper that way (some ink cartridges cost almost as much as my
HP500. Also, Canon wisely concluded that the average uses more BW than color and
made the black ink cartridge three times larger than the color carts.

I don't know about the newer Canon BJs, but the older ones took
forever to power on and off - requiring massive cleaning each way. I
have a Lexmark Z53 on my Winders PC now, at it's great. I'm using a
Laserjet 100 on Linux, since I don't really care about color.

Personally I have stuck with Epson for the quality of the colour printing
and lastly for the less expensive consumables, (no printhead on cartridges).
I am sure that you will pick up an excellent model for that price or less.

There have been discussions in the media and in lists re the canon style
versus epson style cartridges. However over the years I have not had one of
these epson printeheads either replaced or fixed. as always there will be
someone who has but!

Re: Printer Recommendations

2001-11-26 Thread Joel Hammer

I am using a lexmark z53. They support linux to a certain extent, so it is
more than just compatible, it is SUPPORTED.
Their setup program runs under linux, so you can easily configure the
printer.
Just for Kurt, attached are screen shots of the menu. I didn't send them to the loop
since I doubt everyone wants to see them. However, if others on the loop want
to see them, just drop me a line and I will be glad to send them to them.
As best I can tell, the support for actual printing is a program which
filters postscript files using ghostscript to a file that the z53 is happy
with. You need enscript to print text files.
I guess they know how to configure ghostscript for their printers.
It works well, I think, including color.
And, the cost is moderate, under $200 or thereabouts. (I forget, but I am
cheap.) I just spent $31 for a backup B&W cartridge. I am through buying
cheap cartidges, after what happend to my epson stylus. There are cheaper
printers like the z32 which also supports linux, but for reasons which escape
me, I switched to the epson. But, the latter never did print color well with
linux, and so I switched to the lexmark z53, with which I am very satisfied.
I haven't really tried photo quality printing, though.
The only problem is two way commuication. This is required for some of the
higest quality printing, and samba doesn't allow for that, so I guess the
windows clients might lose something but nobody is complaining in my
household. If you do set up this printer as a network printer on a samba
server, if you don't turn off two way communication with the PC, (in the
windows driver setup) things will not go right. Oh yes, one more thing. It
seems impossible to set up the z53 drivers on the samba server to download to
the windows clients. Something happens in translation and the windows PC's
always hang after the driver is installed. I also could never get the
lexmark driver to install in win4lin properly. So with win4lin, I just
picked a generic postscript driver and send the print jobs to the samba server
queue and all prints well.

I get very nice results from my HP DeskJet 695c. I doubt it's available
as it's about 3 years old, but I mention it because there MAY be recent HP
DeskJets that will work well also.

Kurt:
The Lexmark Optra 40 works well. It's 600x600 dpi, standard. One
can 'soup it up' to 1200x1200, I've read. Though the Xerox Docuprint
C20 is the same machine, the ink cartridges bearing the Lexmark name
cost one-third less, I've found. (I have the XC20).
