Re: [FLEAA] Charging Station Specs

2008-09-01 Thread Andrew
Hi Greg,

Well, that is good news.
I hope your pro-active approach spreads.
We definitely need more charging areas around Florida.
I'm sure we will be mentioning the office building when we mention the
charging area; it helps to find the charging area when you know what
building it's at.

The specs on charging stations can vary.
I'm partial to the old fashioned RV Park style of charging station.
I will email you a catalog to look through.

Does anyone have specs for a charging station. My office building is
going to set up a charging station in the Sawgrass Mills area, and they
asked for some specs. They seem like they would be interested in making
it a public charging station and wanted the best set of specs. It will
be a special parking space in front of the building. They are planning
to run a special circuit and anything else needed for a outdoor connections.

Please let me know what you might think would be the best option. Do you
think FLEAA would be willing to give the office building some press if
they make it a public station.

Last year was the first year for this car show, and it was big then.
I was there with my eBox and Charles was there with his Vectrix.
There was definitely something there for every kind of automotive

Jason plans to expand the classes offered at his college to include hybrids
and electric vehicles.
He would like input from our members about electric vehicles and also about
a conversion he is planning.

Jason writes:

We also have our 1999 Cavalier Z24 donor car stripped of its engine and

Seminole Community College is hosting their annual car show on October 4th,
2008. I have attached the preliminary flyer (please excuse the typos!)
We are in the process of including Odyssey Day with our car show. I have
spoken with Bill Young and he encourages participants going to his show on
Friday to charge their vehicles and drive to Sanford on Saturday. We will
have charging options for everyone. If interested, please let me know of
your charging needs. I will have more odyssey day info as it comes available
as well as the focus.
We also have our 1999 Cavalier Z24 donor car stripped of its engine and
transmission. I need some feedback on what motor/controller to use with this
vehicle. Any info would be appreciated!

If you are interested in being a vendor during the show to showcase your
business, clubs, etc. I have included a form.
I am also including a registration form, as we will have vehicle judging for
trophies.
If you do not wished to be judged, you are still welcome to attend and have
your car seen at this event!

All proceeds go to our automotive scholarship fund to help our students.

seems thgat many foreign manufacturers are building electrics... GM
'leaked' pictures of the volt where is ford and dodge??

anyway would it be possible to think thsat opec may suddenly drop the
price
of oil to try to get the subject of electric cars off the minds of people?
If all the world goes electric eventually wouldnt that mean oil would drop
and only used in plastic making the prices drop...

price of oil almost down to 100 a barrel but yet still costs $3.50 a gallon
around tampa. Its been the same price per gallon since oil dropped from 140
a barrel to what it is now

they were telling us the price of a gallon goes up when the price ber
barrell goes up then why doesnt it work in the opposite
direction?!?!?!!?!

If this isnt a reason to switch off oil completely I do not know what
is.

On the EVDL someone mentioned that they talked to Tom Gage at the EV
Rally in Palo Alto. According to him, Tom Gage said that the battery
pack in the Tzero is dead now,

But, on a positive note, he says Tom Gage mentioned making a BMS
available that used 18650 batteries. Considering that there is a page
under construction on the AC Propulsion website titled AC Propulsion
Battery Monitors that seems quite possible.

Does anyone, (particularly Andrew whom we all know has some

Hey Everyone,

My son James' school, Park Vista High School in West Palm Beach, is having
its annual Auto Show on December 13th at the school from 1 to 4PM with
awards at 4:30.

We had a small turnout of EV's last year at the show and the instructor said
if we had 6 or more EV's there, they'd try to create an award class for the
EV's. We need to register soon though so they know how many EV's will be
attending. If you pre-register, there is a $10 fee. Here is the link to the
website:

http://www.palmbeach.k12.fl.us/91eeehs/Auto%20Show/HTML/index.htm

Here is a link to the flyer:

http://www.palmbeach.k12.fl.us/91eeehs/Auto%20Show/forms/PVCHS_AutoShow_Flye
r2008_Color.pdf

You can get to the registration page directly here:

http://pvchssurvey.com/auto-show.htm

Please be sure to specify that you are with the FLEAA as far as the club
goes.

They are expecting between 400-500 cars this year so it should be a great
opportunity to get out there with the EV's and show them (taking a little
lead from Al Lococo ;-) off to the public.

If you register and can be there, please let me know so I can keep track of
who's going to be there.

Hi Charles,

My best guess is the Tesla will be one from the company.
Darryl Siry, Tesla's SVP of marketing, sales and service is planning to be
in Miami for the December 5th event.
I believe Steven's Tesla is currently in New York.
I believe there may be some sort of an announcement around the time of the
December 5th event about Tesla's plans for a dealership and service center

I will have to see how much of this I can confirm in the next few days.

[FLEAA] Tesla Miami Event

2008-11-28 Thread Andrew
Hello Everyone,

This is what I know so far about the Tesla Miami event.

Darryl Siry will be in Europe.

Two Tesla Roadsters will be in Miami.

December 2nd and 3rd will be media days.

December 4th and 5th will be Art Basal set up and display.

December 6th and 7th from 10am to 3pm will be ride and drive days at the
Gulfstream Park Race Track parking lot for customers and possibly FLEAA
members as well.

I will know more details fairly soon.

If it is possible that FLEAA members will be able to ride and/or drive a
Tesla, they will probably like to know about how many will make it to the
Miami event.

If there is anyone who may be able to make it to Miami on December 6th
and/or 7th for this event, please let me know so I have an idea of how many
will be there.

Hello everyone,

My friend, Adam, and I have put together this piece on the company AC
Propulsion, which turns gas cars to electric. We want to sell it to Current
TV, but thanks to the economy, they are not buying random packages right
now. You have to win the weekly contest. This is where all of you come in!

If you could just click on the link below:

and pass this email on to everyone you know, it would be greatly

Thank you so much. Let's hope I win! We didn't make this for nothing!

The car has an egg shape to give it the maximum usable interior space and
a relatively aerodynamic exterior.
I think it's roomy and practical.
Frankly anything EV is better than an ICE, as long as it has good range and
I can drive it on the highway.

Andrew,

Let me add this, it is interesting that hese people have had to close the
trial application process, because the excessive numer, is so far in excess
of the 500 they require. This in the face of repeated doubts from the auto
industry about the need for a BEV offering.

I believe adding yourself to their email list is a way of adding weight to
numbers already on their application list.

2009-02-08 Thread Andrew
Hello everyone,

We are gearing up for our annual Battery Beach Burnout February 21st and
22nd.

Join us if you can, it will be an electrifying weekend.

So far we have quite a few EVs, including an AC Propulsion eBox, a number of
Toyota RAV4-EVs, a Vectrix and possibly a Detroit Electric.

We want all types of EVs, but we are especially looking for modern EVs
(Tesla, Aptera, etc.) and historic EVs (Baker Electric, Detroit Electric,
etc.).

Does anyone know of a Tesla owner who would like to bring their EV to our
event?

We would really like a Tesla (wouldn't we all?).

According to the release company (Business Wire) it is currently published

2009-02-15 Thread Andrew
Well said Charles.
Everyone should make an effort to be there, with their EVs if they have
them, and contact their Local, State and Federal elected officials to be
there as well.
If they are on this email, contact them anyway to reaffirm your position
that they should be there.
What happens at Battery Beach will have a substantial influence on the
future of electric vehicles.

Find your Florida State Representative at the link below.
If you are not sure who your Representative is, there is a ZIP CODE + 4
search at the left on this webpage.
If you don't know the + 4 of your zip code, check your mail, it should be on
the address of some of the mail you receive.
When you reach your Representative's webpage, there is an email link at the
upper right.
You can also call them at their Capitol and district offices.

Contact your United States Representative (Congressman) here:

You can email them and call them at their Washington and district offices as
well.
Remember, they represent you and your interests, but you have to let them

Subject: [FLEAA] Battery Beach Burnout update

Hi everyone,

There have been a few questions on what vehicles and also which politicians
we are expecting at BBB, so I'll try to answer those questions as best we
can, given the information we've got at this point, now 6 days out.

First, having participated in this event each year over the last 4 years,
let me just say that this year is shaping up to be by far the best one ever
and a quantum leap over previous years in terms of quantity, quality, and
just the overall caliber and professionalism of the event, with a lot of
good corporate, institutional, business, OEM, and governmental participation
and sponsorship this year. It's going to be an absolute blowout, stellar
event, so if you haven't made your plans to come yet, and to bring your EV
if you have one, please do; it will be well worth the trip!

We've had a very wide blast distribution publicity campaign and have gotten
tremendous interest in the event already, and that's before our radio
marketing campaign kicks in this coming week, where we've got a hundred
spots of our on-air ads running on 5 South Florida radio stations during the
5 days leading up to the event, plus a live radio broadcast at the beginning
of the event itself, from 10am to noon Saturday morning.

We're expecting as many as several thousand people at the event over the
course of the weekend and upwards of 80 EVs, including:

A couple Tesla Roadsters.

At least 3 A123/Hymotion plug-in Priuses -- one from FPL, a second one from
Sumter Electric Co-op (SECO Energy), and a third from our FLEAA North
Florida Director, Fran Sullivan-Fahs, on her EVI tour.

An AC Propulsion/Kokam lithium-powered Porsche from Suncoast Electric
Vehicles.

An AC Propulsion eBox.

3 Toyota RAV4-EVs.

A Rennaisance Motors Tropica.

A couple Corbin Sparrows.

Dozens of converted electric cars and trucks.

High school EVs from all over the Southeastern US.

Two 90-100 year old antique electric cars, still running! -- a Detroit
Electric and a Milburn Electric.

Two plug-in hybrid bucket trucks from FPL.

A 40-foot hybrid bus from Palm Tran (Palm Beach County's bus operator).

Electric motorcycles from Vectrix and Patterson Cycles, as well as converted
motorcycles.

Zenn MSEVs.

GEM NEVs.

Dozens of electric scooters.

High school electrathon racers from all over Florida.

Clipper Creek, the only 208-240V charging infrastructure manufacturer, will
be demonstrating their charging stations by charging the Tesla Roadsters at
the event.

Coulomb Technologies, a 120V charging infrastructure manufacturer, will be
demonstrating their 120V charging posts by charging the GEMs at the event.

With major EV incentives legislation now being introduced in the state
legislature, we are also expecting a number of prominent politicians at the
event, including:

I wanted to pass along the update on HB 879 - the EV Incentive Bill:

http://blogs.tampabay.com/energy/electric_car/

March 11, 2009
Tax break for Florida electric car buyers advances in House

A bill in the Florida legislature would remove state sales tax on electric
cars and give businesses who use them a tax credit, AP reports.

HB 879, sponsored by Rep. Adam Hasner, was approved unanimously by the House
Energy Utilities Policy Committee on Tuesday. There's a companion bill
sponsored by Sen. Thad Altman, R-Melbourne.

As this blog has previously reported, the bill has the strong backing of the
Florida Electric Auto Association.

This is a way for Florida to take the lead in advancing the electric car
movement and getting more cars on the road that use zero gas and have zero
emissions, says Hasner, R-Delray Beach.

I think they need a good technical advisor/electrician/engineer.
If they would rewrite their script, there are at least three Teslas in their

Folks,

I was contacted by someone named Vinny at Fox/USA Studios about a TV show
that is filmed in Miami called Burn Notice. He called to enquire about
having an electric vehicle for the show. First he wanted to rent one then
said they just wanted to shoot the car in the scene and wanted to know if we
could help him out. I said we had several members with vehicles around and
asked him what type he was looking for. His response was one of the goofy,
rounded EV's with no doors was what we were thinking of. I said, you mean a
GEM neighborhood electric? He wasn't sure on the name. I asked him if he
wanted a NEV / LSV like a GEM or a highway capable - higher speed car. We
then told me it wasn't going to move in the show, just be parked in the
garage as part of the scene, so something that was obvious as an electric
would be preferred.

So far this sounded good; then he laid out the scene for me: Our hero is
going to run into the parking garage in a large building and yank the cord
from the wall that the car is using which will create a problem and short
out the whole building creating a power outage. I was a little stunned at
first and then informed him that we strive to promote electric vehicles and
the ease of use - including charging. I mentioned that the safety of the
vehicles (how safe they are to operate) is also something we promote as part
of that. His response was basically disregard and stated that's not the
scene we are trying to create.

I told him I would have to ask around, but if that was the effect he was
going for, it didn't sound like something we could help him with.

I wanted to send this out to give everyone a heads up, including our
commercial partners, that this film group is looking for a car, but how they
want to use it isn't going to do EV's any favors.

If you get contacted by them, please let me know.

Thanks,

Just spoke with Bill of largo, FL. He owns a Tropica.

He said he'd be happy to make his car available for their scene.

tesla looks to much like a lotus, I don't think anyone would make the
connection it's electric.

the tropica could be of use, they could pan over the controllers in the back
and then follow the cord from the zivan charger into the wall just before he
pulls it.

Maybe we could suggest when he pulls the cord, the plug gets stuck in the
outlet, pulls the outlet from the wall and the wires inside the outlet then
cause the short.

makes more sense.

I have a very long post to tell you about the first meeting of the N.
Florida EAA chapter which has been named the Tallahassee Area EVA. As many
of you may remember I had plans to start a subchapter of the FLEAA up here
when I returned from The Electric Vehicle Initiative. But, someone did all
the work of setting up a chapter while I was gone. I was pleasantly shocked
at all the good EV energy that was present at this large meeting yesterday.
We had 2 PHEVs, one great converted Dodge caravan with good range, some
NEVs, and...a Tesla! I will try to attach some photos to our blog of the
exciting day. The Tesla owner gave every person there a ride.
But click below to the link to our blog for the story of this wonderfully
exciting day!
I must say that N. Florida has entered the world of EVs in a big way.

Dear Mr. Roddy,

The Focus the Nation Planning Committee is delighted that you will be
participating in this groundbreaking event for our area. To stimulate a high
level of engagement, we would like to give you a clear idea of how we have
envisioned the event as a whole. The overarching theme is the value and
importance of establishing broad cross-sector partnerships for communities
to seize the opportunities of the new economy in order to become truly
sustainable. In addition to the panel discussion, over 20 exhibitors have
asked to be represented in the Main Hall Showcase to take place over lunch
immediately after the panel.

Following the general welcome by the presidents and Boca Raton mayor, a
panel discussion will be conducted on Florida's new economy and energy
future. A number of prominent academics and business leaders in this field
will discuss questions posed to them on these topics. Exhibitors are
expected to attend and participate in this part of the program. Some of the
questions will revolve around the following broad areas:

. In terms of sustainable development today, which and for what
reason do you consider to be the most promising careers and job
opportunities?

. How can academia, business, and government work together as a
community to reduce our ecological footprint, advocate for policy change,
become more equitable, and develop sustainable business and employment
opportunities?

. Which are some of the more successful solutions currently being
implemented to make businesses, institutions, and communities more energy
efficient and carbon neutral, more equitable, and more prosperous?

Once the discussions have run their course, the audience will be given an
opportunity to ask more specific questions of the panel. The showcase and
lunch that will follow will provide an opportunity for people to connect and
build relationships intended to initiate collaborative action in education,
business, and government leading to a more prosperous and sustainable future
for our community.

Attached you will find the program detailing the day's activities. The
event will be held in the Barry Kaye College of Business at the FAU Boca
Raton campus. Please click on the link for directions

http://uavp.fau.edu/Flashmap/FAUMap.html

As part of our effort to promote a strong showing, we are asking all
participants to encourage other like-minded and perhaps a few skeptics to
register at no charge at http://fauf.fau.edu/focusthenation
http://fauf.fau.edu/focusthenation.

Free parking has been reserved in Lots # 7 and # 9 on the north side of the
building. Please enter the Sean Stein Pavilion and check in at the
registration table. I will be the event point person so don't hesitate to
contact me for any reason (cell phone: 561 789 9418).

Attire: Business Casual

We value your participation in this important event very highly, and look
forward to seeing you on the 18th.

Re: [FLEAA] US drops car fuel cell research

2009-05-12 Thread Andrew
Pete,

Battery electric vehicles are at east 4 times more efficient than hydrogen
fuel cell vehicles.
A hydrogen fueling infrastructure from production to distribution and retail
across the US would cost a trillion dollars.
The charging infrastructure for battery electric vehicles largely exists
today, electric outlets are everywhere.

[FLEAA] Hotels for GLEE Event

2007-03-17 Thread Andrew Roddy
Hello Everyone,

Here is the link to the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce Hotels, Motels
and Resorts page.

There are accommodations in Marathon that are a better value than the Banana
Bay Resort.

I would ask how close the hotel is to the event, but Marathon is not a very
big island.

http://www.floridakeysmarathon.com/description.asp?u_category=Hotels,%20Mote
ls%20and%20Resorts

I booked a room at the Banana Bay Resort, but I may cancel, and book a room
at another resort with a more reasonable rate.

I believe the Banana Bay Resort will charge one night's stay if anyone
cancels a reservation a week or less closer to the arrival day.

Here is the link to the Florida Keys GLEE website.
