[Ltsp-discuss] installation issues

2012-08-09 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Hi all,

I've been pulling my hair out trying to get Edubuntu to work properly. I am
installing it at a small, private school and am running out of time. Any
help will be greatly appreciated.

 I am using a HP Pavillion Slimeline s5120f with 3.8 GB mem and AMD Athlon
7750 Dual-core Processor X2 as the server. I downloaded and installed the
32 bit version of EdUbuntu. It is connected to a Linksys wrt610N Router
which has its DHCP server enabled. The router itself is on a dedicated IP.
>From the router it goes to one of two nic cards on the server. The other
nic card is a usb to rj45 converter and goes to a 16 port switch and then
on to the clients.

The clients are, for the most part, P4 Dells but have also tested on a
Lenovo laptop and an Acer laptop. I downloaded and burned boot CD from
prebuilt gPXE iso boot images are from
http://www.rom-o-matic.net/gpxe/gpxe-1.0.1/contrib/rom-o-matic/with
alldrivers

 I have been able to get the clients logged into the server but the
graphics have a broad spectrum of problems ranging from black screen, to
severe resolution problems and even displaying the server's desktop upside
down and reversed on the lenovo laptop.

At first I was thinking all the problems had to do with the server's NVidia
graphics card. Then I was thinking since the clients each handle their own
graphics and the problems had to do with the downloaded gPXE file. Now I am
thinking it is a wrong setting in the Linux iso image that is sent to the
client when they boot telling the connecting client to operate in the wrong
resolution.

Thanks in advance

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] installation issues

2012-08-09 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Thanks Rob,

Here is what lts.conf says

[default]
LDM_THEME=edubuntu
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8
LDM_LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8

I added to it
XSERVER = vesa
X_MODE_0= 1280x1024

but that was a no-no (the server wouldn't boot afterwards). As I am
reinstalling Edubuntu for yet another time I'll mention what may be another
symptom/cause. When installing we are given the option to download updates
as we install. Updating seems to cause edubuntu to not be able to access
the Internet afterwards (not positive but sure seems like it).

[Ltsp-discuss] no software/dashboard icons on client

2012-08-10 Thread Robert Lefebvre
I am a total noob at Edubuntu and even networking in general but I finally
managed to get a client to boot and log into the server but when it does
the desktop is missing any navigation. There is no icons in the top right
that indicate network connection, date, username reboot etc. There are no
program icons in the left menu either.

There is, however, a folder on the desktop titled "untitled folder". It is
filled with the os folders and files.

How do I get the client to display programs?

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] no software/dashboard icons on client

2012-08-11 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Hey David,

Hey hey hey HEY!

Yes! That worked like a charm!

I have four test stations set up and rebooted all of them and got the menus
:-)

Your instructions worked flawlessly! Thank you so much!

Adding this to the wiki is an excellent idea because I Googled for a long
time and wasn't able to find anything. It may be because it is a difficult
issue to describe in a short search phrase. I suggest you splatter the
article with as many variants as you can.

Suggestions:

Edubuntu 12.04 No menu
Edubuntu 12.04 No menu after login
Edubuntu 12.04 Desktop but No menu
Edubuntu 12.04 Desktop but No menu after login

Edubuntu 12.04 No Ubuntu admin bar
Edubuntu 12.04 No Ubuntu admin bar after login
Edubuntu 12.04 Desktop but No Ubuntu admin bar
Edubuntu 12.04 Desktop but No Ubuntu admin bar after login

Edubuntu 12.04 No menu or Ubuntu admin bar
Edubuntu 12.04 No menu or Ubuntu admin bar after login
Edubuntu 12.04 Desktop but No menu or Ubuntu admin bar
Edubuntu 12.04 Desktop but No menu or Ubuntu admin bar after login

For clarity on the wiki let me mention that my lts.conf was already there.

It had
[default]
 LDM_THEME=edubuntu
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8
LDM_LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8

NOTICE (maybe mention in the wiki) there are no quotes in all the current
code. Your code worked with the quotes but I also tested w/o them and it
won't work w/o quotes. A strange result.

So, yes, I am using Edubuntu 12.04. It is at a small private school in
Winter Park, Florida (just north of Orlando). It is a school for special
needs kids and I'll be doing a couple of courses there on building computer
games. The owner's wishes are to get them equipped with applicable skills
and hopefully I'll be able to get them typing, doing basic graphics, simple
coding etc along the way to building a game that they will acquire those
skills.

I am definitely a Moodle fan so that will be my next step (to install
Moodle). Now my research seems to indicate that Edubuntu will not have a
conflict with Moodle. I was concerned there would be because there will be
two servers running (I don't see Apache installed or running). Would you
have some advice on installing Moodle before I attempt it?

Also, are you familiar with the MX180 PC?

$69

We would need a grant of some type to acquire them but the kids would be
able to use them to connect to the lab and could take them home to have as
their own.

Thanks again,

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] no software/dashboard icons on client

2012-08-11 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Hi again,

I was able to get Moodle installed but did it manually. There were a couple
of issues with the EdUbuntu install. I don't know if you are aware of them
or not but

1) EdUbuntu is using an old version (1.9.9) of Moodle so I installed the
newest (2.3.1)

2) Am I wrong and did it to myself or does EdUbuntu install Moodle into
usr/share folder? Somehow the Moodle files ended up there when they should
be in var/www

But it really feels good to have the lab and Moodle up and running. Now on
to building the courses. :-)

Thanks again for your awesome and timely help.

Robert

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] no software/dashboard icons on client

2012-08-13 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Hi David,

Well, I had an excellent day with LTSP (for a change). I had been booting
from a cd and was thinking there was a lot of work to get the clients to
boot from the network. Wow was I wrong. Sort of stumbled upon it by
accident that all it takes is changing the boot order in the bios. So, I
went through about ten machines and all except two are booting directly to
the network.

Then the boss (the owner of the school started using the lab from an old
Dell client station and was blown away with how fast it was. It used to be
so slow. Well he was so impressed he started dragging every pc and laptop
out that he could get his hands on and I got about 8 abandoned machines
going.

But the best story was when I came across two basically stripped out pcs.
They had no hard drives, no memory, holes where the floppy used to be, and
no history about what was wrong with them. I found a proper memory stick
and threw it in one and started it up. Wouldn't you know it went right into
a network boot in a snap. I had never done a diskless machine before and
tonight I got my first two built. Way cool.

[Ltsp-discuss] Clients lose Internet access after being idle

2012-08-22 Thread Robert Lefebvre
I am running the latest version of EdUbuntu in a lab of 12 clients. I have
not nailed the cause for the entire lab losing Internet but I am suspecting
the system is entering a "sleep mode" and cannot restart. Is such a thing
possible?

[Ltsp-discuss] tried to change to fat clients and made a mess

2012-08-26 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Hi all,

Our new network is a bit slow and we traced that to needing some equipment
upgraded (switches and nic cards) but our budget is maxed out. So I figured
I would move some of the stronger client machines to fat client operation
but after the process no clients will boot. They give the error "could not
find kernel image vmlinuz"

To attempt to change to fat client I followed the directions here -
http://jonathancarter.org/2010/11/24/how-do-ltsp-fat-clients-work/
and everything went fine until the last step - restarting dhcp. The
instructions say to use "/etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart" but that
command gives the error "dhcp3-server: command not found" Further research
told me ltsp uses a different dhcp server so I tried " sudo stop
isc-dhcp-server and got
isc-dhcp-server stop/waiting
and then sudo start isc-dhcp-server and got
isc-dhcp-server start/running, process 25078"

Were those restart commands correct and does anyone see anything else in
those instructions that would cause EdUbuntu to break?

I have a bunch of kids coming in the morning for class on these units so I
really could use some help figuring this out please.

Thanks in advance
Robert

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] tried to change to fat clients and made a mess

2012-08-26 Thread Robert Lefebvre
It was a good idea and I gave it a try but still get the error "could not
find kernel image vmlinuz"

I was reading that Debian will re generate an image on its own (the
instructions I initially used said to order that done on the cl) .

I've got two "linuz" type files in my boot directory
vmlinuz-3.2.0-23-generic-pae and  vmlinuz-3.2.0-29-generic-pae

There is also what looked like a vmlinuz directory there but ls -l reveals
it is something I am not familiar with - perhaps a symlink? that forwards
to the first file above (vmlinuz-3.2.0-23-generic-pae).

ls -l reports this about vmlinuz

lrwxrwxrwx   1 root root33 Aug 11 14:09 vmlinuz ->
boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-23-generic-pae

The properties of vmlinuz-3.2.0-29-generic-pae and
vmlinuz-3.2.0-23-generic-pae are different too ...
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  5015840 Apr 23 11:41 vmlinuz-3.2.0-23-generic-pae
-rw--- 1 root root  5010176 Jul 27 14:35 vmlinuz-3.2.0-29-generic-pae

AND I didn't even have the server installed on April 23?

I hope the error can be found.

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] tried to change to fat clients and made a mess

2012-08-26 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Perhaps it may be of value to mention I had backed up /opt/ltsp/i386

I did that because the fat client install procedure kept getting an error
that i386 was already present. I tried to replace the current new one with
the original but still got the same error and nothing changed.

[Ltsp-discuss] Need advice about server purchase

2012-08-30 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Hi all,

We are going to upgrade our server and had one in mind. It has plenty of
memory and a gigabit lan (we'll need another) but the question I had was
about the 6 core processor it has.

AMD-FX6100, 6Cores processor with 14MB cache.
Core 1 speed = 4.0Ghz
Core 2 speed = 4.0Ghz
Core 3 speed = 4.0Ghz
Core 4 speed = 4.0Ghz
Core 5 speed = 4.0Ghz
Core 6 speed = 4.0Ghz
Total processing speed (6X4ghz = 24 Ghz)
Core temperature = (70'F to 90'F )
Heat sink and fans (AMD original copper pipes heat-sink & it support up to
8 cores processors with speed 4.0Ghz)

We are only running 20 thin clients but want to get another 30 by year's
end.

My main question is whether the 6 cores are better for a lab. I'm thinking
it would because requests come in from many different clients.

[Ltsp-discuss] changed nic card and lost client connections

2012-09-02 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Hey all,

I'm a noob at networking and Edubuntu but am starting to grasp it (I think
:-).

I just changed the server over from using a USB to rj45 ethernet connector
to a pci express gigabit network card and am having problems getting it
re-connected to the clients. At the client I'm getting the EdUbuntu
landing/login page but w/o the input for just a couple of seconds and then
get this error :

BusyBox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
(initramfs)

I'm attempting to use "eth2" (i.e. the new gigabit card) connected to the
client network. I was able to get onboard eth0 connected to the Internet.

I've got the /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf file set like this

#
# Default LTSP dhcpd.conf config file.
#

authoritative;

subnet 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 192.168.0.20 192.168.0.250;
option domain-name "example.com";
option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.0;
option broadcast-address 192.168.0.255;
option routers 192.168.0.0;
#next-server 192.168.0.1;
#get-lease-hostnames true;
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
option root-path "/opt/ltsp/i386";
if substring( option vendor-class-identifier, 0, 9 ) = "PXEClient" {
filename "/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0";
} else {
filename "/ltsp/i386/nbi.img";
}

I ran the "ifconfig" command on the cl and got this:
eth0  Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:24:8c:a9:d0:cd

*I ran *

sudo service isc-dhcp-server start

*
Might this all be related to my previous botched attempt at setting the
server up to create fat clients?*

I Googled the error and it was saying the error was tied to a block being
wrong or broken. When the fat client change was reversed the network was
still up afterward.

Thanks in advance

[Ltsp-discuss] where/how to repair missing pxelinux.cfg/default

2012-09-02 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Could someone please explain to me how to go about fixing the error when
booting the client and it reports

"TFTP prefix: /ltsp/i386/
Trying to load: pxelinux.cfg/default
Could not find kernel image: vmlinuz"

I can see vmlinuz at the root level but can't find pxelinux.cfg and tried
making one and putting it in both ltsp/i386 and also created a directory
named tftpboot and placed pxelinux.cfg in it.

[Ltsp-discuss] I'm really soured on Edubuntu

2012-09-03 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Getting edubuntu has been one of the most exhausting exercises at what
seems to be futility (at least right now). I talked this school to invest
in it and it is turning into a complete failure. Since the beginning it has
been nothing but one problem after another. Its like playing womp-a-mole. I
fix one problem and another pops up.

Earlier today I tried installing fat clients for the third time only to be
greeted with yet another crash. This time the screen was completely black
and I could see no sense in trying to recover it. I re-installed everything
over again - edubuntu, apache, mysql, php, webmin and still have moodle and
wordpress to go.

The only problem is yet another couple issues .

Out of six machines that were working previously two booted to the Edubuntu
desktop but had no launchpad for the programs. Probably a misconfiguration
somewhere.

Two others boot into the desktop but then go black h.

The other two don't want to accept the network kernel for some reason and
miss the network boot and boot to the hard drive. I hate to say it but
those windows screens are looking better each time.

2012-09-03 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Thanks Rob,

I may do that on the new server we are supposed to be getting. In the mean
time I have to get this running for the kids by a.m. I'm keeping busy
checking the cabling as a previous post suggested. This all started when I
switched from t100 nic and switches to t1000.

Ok, I found it -- sort of.

If I change the session manager (down in the lower right corner of the

I just need to find out how to make that the default for the kids.

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] I'm really soured on Edubuntu

2012-09-04 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Hi everyone,

Well, it gets even stranger ... but in a good way.

I experimented with the CompizConfig Settings Manager because it is the GUI
for the default display right? And all over the place (in the comments, in
the package's landing page) it has dire warnings it could crash your system.

Well, I was going to try to "tone down" the display so decided to give it a
try. When I did I lost the menu on the server gui. Thought I was a goner.

But as it turned out, I may have found a safety device to that problem with
CompizConfig Settings Manager. You see, I had set up with two admins. I
signed in with the other admin and, fortunately, still had my old desktop.

There are a number of reports of people losing their system while using
CompizConfig Settings Manager. This procedure of setting up a second admin
with every one of the permissions as the first enabled me to save the
system. If more tests confirm this then perhaps it should become part of
the installation procedure.

That ( LDM_SESSION="gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d")
fixed it! Thanks! I had already started explaining to the students how to
go to preferences and change the session but that was causing them some

Hi Dave,

Well right now we have two gigabit nic cards on the server, one handles the
Internal network while the other goes directly to a static IP. And there
is also a 100t onboard nic but that has been deactivated but I would like
to make that available to non-ltsp machines since there won't be too many
of those.

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Possible to have separate non-ltsp path to Internet?

2012-09-23 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Hi Jay,

It sounds like "You can configure the existing LTSP DHCP server to handout
IP addresses and a unique gateway to non-PXE clients." is the way I need to
go.

How do I do that (how do configure the dhcp server to handout IP addresses
and a unique gateway to non-pxe clients)?

Here is my current dhcp config file ...

#
# Default LTSP dhcpd.conf config file.
#

authoritative;

subnet 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 192.168.0.20 192.168.0.250;
option domain-name "example.com";
option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.1;
option broadcast-address 192.168.0.255;
option routers 192.168.0.1;
#next-server 192.168.0.1;
#get-lease-hostnames true;
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
option root-path "/opt/ltsp/i386";
if substring( option vendor-class-identifier, 0, 9 ) = "PXEClient" {
filename "/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0";
} else {
filename "/ltsp/i386/nbi.img";
}
}

One thing I am concerned about is whether activating the currently
de-activated on board nic card will cause all the configurations of the
LTSP server to become trashed. I deactivated the on board nic during
install when it appeared that it was defaulting to eth0 and I couldn't
quite figure out how to leave it while still configuring the two pcie
gigabit nic cards. Is there a way to activate it so that it is named eth2
from the start? Or, if not, will I only have to assign new names to it and
the other two nics in the etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent.net.rules file?
What I am afraid of is activating the onboard nic and Edubuntu creates a
bunch of automatic config files that I won't be able to correct.

Thanks too.

Robert

Hey, thanks for all the great replies.

The reason for using PHP is that I use the list of registered users in
Ubuntu as the "master" data list for a number of present and future custom
website functionality. For example, the PHP pulls the list and creates a
form to manage their electives. Their actual choices vary each day so I use
PHP and Mysql to maintain a db with their classes. I also use PHP to
provide multilevel access (i.e. different for students, parents, teachers
and admin) to the web pages for such things as forms, news, resources etc.
The passwd file works great as a "read source" since only registered
students will be given access to the web pages. There are some other
benefits as well to using php and a database.

All the command line code is great, but unless someone can tell me how to
let these php pages write to the command line then I would have to not only
give the teachers access to it but would actually have to teach the
teachers to code and, well, they already think I'm way over the edge as far
as "geekiness" and they would be certainly less than enthusiastic students
for sure.

I'll definitely study up on the programs and methods suggested. Off the
cuff (before studying those recommendations) it sounds like adding PHP to
sudoers would work but can I scale back the permissions from total sudo to
a less functional sudo?

Thanks

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Grant write privileges to PHP to the etc/passwd

2012-11-12 Thread Robert Lefebvre
This is all great resources. Thanks and I'll follow up with the results.

Another thought was to only make the sudoers file accessible to php and not
add php as a sudo user. If/when the script was run, I could have php write
to sudoers to add itself. Then when the script was done it could rewrite
again and remove itself. The benefit would be that it can only add itself
as a sudo user (and not any other user) whereas if I grant php sudo access
anyone hacking php could create a user and give it sudo access too.
Definitely not perfect, just one extra layer perhaps.

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Grant write privileges to PHP to the etc/passwd

2012-11-13 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Hello everybody,

I've begun researching your suggestions and I am leaning towards the
openLDAP suggestion. I need some help with direction of my further research
please.

I should have little problem installing it in Edubuntu 12.04 as it s
included in the Software Center. And I should have little problem coding to
it with PHP as the concepts are basically the same as interacting with
MySql. And I get how to add users and such to the LDAP database. But how do
I tell Edubuntu to only use the users from the LDAP list?
Thanks.

I would assume as a login manager that it merely lets things happen after
authentication but the events that are allowed are only what is programmed.
If only software functionality compatable with the Android kernel were
allowed then there should be any fight. I'm thinking an SSH tunnel bringing
in X11 data from the server. Android can handle X11 ok can't it?

Also, at the Ubuntu site they offer two Ubuntu/Android apps. (
https://one.ubuntu.com/downloads/android/). Both of these are just as, if
not more, complicated than what is needed to run as a thin client aren't
they?

Well I definitely don't understand it but when my current clients boot, PXE
and LTSP deliver them a login screen, that's all. That doesn't seem too
complicated to me but since there isn't anything out there yet to use these
Android devices as thin clients it must be complicated or it would have
been done.

>You might want to first try setting it up on a more

I agree totally but I've been looking for Non-PXE alternatives to connect
to the server but haven't found any. I have Ubuntu as the operating system
on my laptop but I also change the bios and network boot to the server with
it. So, it then has a totally different OS running than the one on its hard
drive. One approach, then, may be to reboot an Android device and have it
then load a new Linux kernel. That would make the client operate just like
all other clients and would not be affected by any subsequent Android
modifications.

tried it with the MK802 mini PC I also have but what strikes me about the
approach is how I don't have to make different boot images for my current
clients even though they have different processors (Intel and Amd),
different Nic cards, etc. I would think we should probably need two or
three versions for tablet devices and micro PCs - one for Android, one for
Apple and one for Microsoft

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] ltsp as an android app

2012-12-04 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Thank you everybody. I think we have some really good discussion going and
hopefully some people with the skills can step forward and build some of
the needed parts that could make all this easier and enable widespread use
of these devices as thin clients. At our school, for example, I just built
my first LTSP lab and the owner is estatic about the cost savings and the
quality. But I look at these devices at $30-40 each (and retail at that)
and see that low cost computer labs are right at our finger tips.

telling
>you, it's software all the way down.

My background is web development rather than server admin and I've heard we
had a similar situation back during the 'browser wars'. The solution then
was also software based - they used javascript to detect the browser and
delivered the proper code depending on the browser detected. It seems the
solution to this current issue should be some type of detection software to
detect the type of device. Such a solution could adapt to even as yet
undeveloped hardware. Once the hardware type is identified, developers
could deliver the kernel in some sort of modular approach. What I mean is
large chunks of the kernel should/could be reused by different devices with
intermittent customized kernel code applicable to the devices. It seems the
current approach is for every developer, for every device, to start from
scratch.

While there has been plenty of warnings away from developing the needed
boot process because of the complexity it just seems strange that there is,
indeed, such a complexity given that Droid is linux based?

I came across this step by step tutorial on running Ubuntu and Android
together on the same smartphone. While that is not the same as running
ltsp with as Android app it sounds like it may contain a lot of the key
pieces of the puzzle. And considering that the smart phones are a lot more
locked down than the devices such as the Raspeberry Pi, MK802 and tablets
(which all allow root access) the steps outlined in the how to should be
easier.

This is my first app experience and am trying to get up to speed with using
Eclipse. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

[Ltsp-discuss] MIT's Scratch Program In An LTSP

2013-08-21 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Is there anyone out there with experience running Scratch in an LTSP
network?

I installed it in our school's network last year and it works but ...

the users can't save anything locally.

They can open an account at MIT and save it to their system but it would be
better if they could save it to our own server.

Has anyone been able to get Scratch to save locally?

Thanks in advance

Robert

We're going ahead and using it but with the added hassle of getting the
kids to set up accounts at MIT to save them there aaargh :-)

Hey Matt, Thanks for the reply again.

I installed it late last year and maybe I didn't update the chroot
properly. I'm not all that well acquanted with it either. In your code on
the chroot, you are using a proxy. We don't so do I just leave that config
off or do I substitute our server's IP?

Update, upgrade and install software into the chroot

sudo ltsp-chroot -m -r; export
http_proxy=http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:80

apt-get update

apt-get upgrade
apt-get install gnome-session-fallback ubuntu-restricted-extras firefox
hydrogen mypaint audacity vlc tuxmath epoptes-client tuxpaint scratch

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] MIT's Scratch Program In An LTSP

2013-08-27 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Here is lts.conf

# lts.conf, provided by Edubuntu installer
# see http://edubuntu.org/documentation for more information

[default]
  LDM_THEME=edubuntu
  LANG=en_US.UTF-8
  LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8
  LDM_LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8
LDM_DIRECTX="false"
LDM_XSESSION="gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d"
#LDM_XSESSION="gnome-session --session=classic-gnome"

That was PERFECT timing. I was trying to remember where the config was to
change the desktop.

I was going to try out the LXDE desktop. I used it on another install and
it seems quicker.

But on that topic, do some programs work on one desktop while others won't?
We were having problems on the other install with X2Go and it worked great
on LXDE.

Also, back on Epoptes, I want to make sure ... so you are saying you can
see their screen and can broadcast to them whether they are thin or fat
right?

And thanks again for the help.

One more thing ... if I wanted the clients to boot to an Apache (localhost)
web page instead of the login how would I go about that? Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] MIT's Scratch Program In An LTSP

2013-08-27 Thread Robert Lefebvre
I never picked up that local apps was not the same as fat client. So I
looked up local apps and it has this:

If you are using a 2-interface LTSP setup, a thin client will probably not
be able to get to the internet using local apps. The solution is to set
your LTSP server up as a router so you can access the internet through it.
Some instructions are available at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ThinClientHowtoNAT/

-> If you are using a 2-interface LTSP setup

Means if I am running two nic cards? Yes I am, so in order to run FF
locally do I have to install NAT?

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] MIT's Scratch Program In An LTSP

2013-08-28 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Ahhh, ok, it just clicked what they are saying. We do have two nics, one is
for internal, on for the Internet. Don't need NAT though. And never thought
of the setup as being a router but guess it is.

Along the lines of setting up local apps, I'm trying to build the client
chroot with this -

To run an additional app locally, just install it in the chroot and update
the image:
sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386
sudo apt-get install
sudo ltsp-update-image

but neither firefox nor scratch can be found and generate error

Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package firefox

I'm running a 64 bit server but the clients are set up to run as 32 bit.

Any ideas why the server can't find the apps to install them? I'm stumped

I got the install instructs from here but they are for version 10.10

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] MIT's Scratch Program In An LTSP

2013-08-30 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Everything in your instructions was EXCELLENT. The program list you had me
move to local was great. I'm going to add some resource intensive graphics
programs like Gimp and Blender to local also.

BUT lol, the original problem with Scratch is still with me but we are
getting different symptoms and I think I know the cause but can't figure
out the solution.

1) Scratch is displaying a blank white screen
2) Firefox has been shifted to local operation but Chromium (which is also
on our network) was not
3) After configuring local_apps Firefox lost the ability to play Flash
videos
4) After configuring local_apps Chromium (not a local app) continued to
play Flash videos
4) Scratch requires Flash

So, I was trying to figure out how to fix Flash Player on the local app. In
the install of local apps you gave me it include ubuntu-restricted-extras
which should handle flash issues.

I also changed the desktop to LXDE.

Here is my new lts.conff

# lts.conf, provided by Edubuntu installer
# see http://edubuntu.org/documentation for more information

[default]
  LDM_THEME=edubuntu
  LANG=en_US.UTF-8
  LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8
  LDM_LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8
#added on tuesday august 27, 2013
#RM_SYSTEM_SERVICES="dnsmasq mysql nbd-server epoptes"
 #USE_LOCAL_SWAP
LOCAL_APPS="true"
#SHUTDOWN_TIME="19:00:00"
LOCALDEV="true"
LDM_DIRECTX="true"
#LDM_XSESSION="gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d"
#LDM_XSESSION="gnome-session --session=classic-gnome"
LDM_XSESSION=/usr/bin/startlxde

When I commented out LDM_DIRECTX="true" I got Flash back for Firefox.

BUT Scratch still only shows a white screen.

It still works on the server but it is still acting the way it used to
(i.e. won't save locally).

Might this be related --- When I start Scratch, the Icon in the launcher
reads Squeak. I remember Scratch uses Squeak and was installed at the same
time by the Ubuntu Software center. I can't do it now because school is in
session and students are logged in but am thinking I need to install Squeak
to the chroot too.

2013-09-03 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Thank you both for your help.

I was able to get Matt's solution to work by adding the desired starting
page to the bash file like this
#!/bin/bash
/usr/bin/chromium-browser localhost

Jim, I wasn't able to get yours to work. Does the file need an extension?
And the folders you specified in the path didn't exist so I created them.
And I just now realized that was for Google Chrome and we are using
Chromium.

Everything is working and I now have a bunch of resource pages for the
teachers and students.

THANKS!!

[Ltsp-discuss] Remote Desktop For LTSP

2013-09-04 Thread Robert Lefebvre
We've had pretty good success using the X2Go program to enable remote
access to both our server and our clients but I have just found Guacamole (
http://guac-dev.org/) which looks interesting.

I like it because it doesn't require that a client be installed on the
remote user's machine.

But, on the other hand, I don't like that it uses VNC which I think is
slower than the X protocol that X2Go uses (but I could be wrong).

Having just started looking at Guacamole, it sounds like it can use any
remote server so it might be possible to get the best of both worlds and
have Guacamole access the x2go remote x server.

Guacamole sounded like a good topic for discussion too.

[Ltsp-discuss] Clustering or app servers?

2013-09-04 Thread Robert Lefebvre
We are currently running just one Edubuntu 12.04 server with a 6 core AMD
processor and 32 GB of ram but I would like to add 1 or more other servers.

I've looked at the ltspcluster.org site and for other tutorials but they
all sort of start "from scratch".

What I was wondering was if I can add the LTSP cluster suite (such as the
load balancer, ltsp-cluster-agent,ltsp-cluster-control etc) to my current
installation.

And along with that I am wondering whether two independent servers each
with edubuntu 12.04 installed can be clustered to work together?

Thanks

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Clustering or app servers?

2013-09-04 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Hi,

I'm not following the advantage of doing this with VMs. I've only dabbled
with them but I'm thinking to add additional processing power to the
network. If possible, I would like to scatter the servers throughout the
school and have them double as workstations for the teachers too. I know
the term "server" is loosely used in LTSP and isn't any special type of
computer. In our network the teachers get the best, strongest machines.
Often they are idle though as they are busy with students.

Am I correct in believing that once the load balancer assigns a request to
a particular server then that traffic would flow back and forth direct from
the client through the switch to the server?

> Do you mean clustering beyond the load balancing LTSP would provide?

Did I answer this above? Or is there some type of load balancing going on
in my single server system now? Like I said, I am thinking of using teacher
work stations as servers at the same time. Or is the idea totally whacked?

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Remote Desktop For LTSP

2013-09-05 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Since X2Go works over SSH maybe someone can figure out how to get Guacamole
to work with it then as it says here
http://guac-dev.org/doc/gug/configuring-guacamole.html#idp689280

Adding an SSH connection

If you are using the default authentication built into Guacamole, and you
wish to grant access to a SSH connection to a particular user, you need to
locate the section for that user within your user-mapping.xml,
and add a section like the following within it:

ssh
*localhost*
*22*

If added exactly as above, a new connection named "*Unique Name*" will be
available to the user associated with the section containing
it. The connection will use SSH to connect to *localhost* at port *22*.
Naturally, you will want to change some or all of these values.

If you want to login automatically rather than receive a login prompt upon
connecting, you can specify a username and password with additional
tags. Other options are available for controlling the font.

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Remote Desktop For LTSP

2013-09-05 Thread Robert Lefebvre
-> Joseph -This may be a simple question, but is this different from using
NX to
remotely access the LTSP server? I've been using that for several
years and it has performed very well.

>From the x2go Developer's section - "X2Go server currently uses NXv3 based
libraries and tools for the backend implementation of X2Go (graphical
compression & caching for low bandwidth connections). "

Before I found x2go I used http://www.nomachine.com/ which uses NX but, if
I remember right, there was a limit on the free licenses one could get.
X2Go has not limits.

As an extra endorsement about X2Go performance, we had picked up a small
laptop at, of all places, a pawn shop and for some reason couldn't get it
to connect to our network so we gave it to one of our students. It was
horrifically slow running XP but the first thing we did was install X2Go.
Today, while accessing our server through wireless and the web with X2Go
this little laptop performed like a champ. Programs like Gimp, Libre Office
Writer popped right up on the screen.

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Remote Desktop For LTSP

2013-09-05 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Just got this reply to a question I posted on the FreeNode/#guacamole-help
channel

The question to guacamole-help : Does anyone know how/if guacamole
integrates with X2go?

Answered by:
 me_robert_too - x2go support is not implemented, but there is
no reason it couldn't be done
 a library like libguac-client-x2go would have to be written
to provide the support for guacd.

That's all way beyond my comprehension. People on that chat were all asking
what x2go was and was it faster than rdp.

I posted this because I thought it was something new and it does seem
that's the case.

There is another aspect of this X2Go saga in that it appears it can compete
with LTSP in the thin client area as well.

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Clustering or app servers?

2013-09-06 Thread Robert Lefebvre
i have experimented with LDAP and had it working (I think) on what is now
our back up server. So do I absolutely have to use LDAP to cluster servers?

If so, I think I would opt to do a total new install on another box. With
your experience does that seem like the best approach?

Thanks

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Remote Desktop For LTSP

2013-09-06 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Something else to maybe consider is x2go use with ltsp clustering. I've
been studying clustering servers and am about to go that route and cluster
servers seem to conduct dual load balancing - one for nx traffic and the
other for, lets say local? *I may be wrong but it sounds like that's what
goes on.

*
*After installing x2go server in Ubuntu 12.04 there is a user named x2go
user. Hope that helps with the "on demand" question.

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Clustering or app servers?

2013-09-06 Thread Robert Lefebvre
Thanks Robert,

Each teacher and each student have their own accounts and home directories
so they all log on anywhere in the school. The teacher "servers" (i.e.
machines) will be located by the teachers work desks mainly so they can
keep a close eye on them.

I'm using webmin as an administrative GUI but can and do sometimes do
things from the CL.

The current install is EdUbuntu 12.04 w/o LDAP.

The reason I was thinking of making a new install is safety because the
current machine is the production unit. If I could get the main
authentication and home directory server set up, add two more
teacher/server cluster units then I can move the authentication passwords,
user accounts, home directories and the network to the new cluster control
server. After that is set up I would definitely want the current production
unit to be added to the cluster but probably only as an app server right? I
mean, it is the strongest machine we have and could handle most of the apps
by itself whereas the authentication/ cluster control server has a lighter
load and doesn't need to be as powerful correct?

[Ltsp-discuss] ltsp cluster installation

2013-09-09 Thread Robert Lefebvre
I am following the instructions here -
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSP-Cluster trying to build
the cluster server in a desktop with Edubuntu 12.04 installed.
During the install I got one warning that may have something to do with the
problem.
Install gave this error

┤ Configuring libphp-adodb ├┐
│ WARNING: include path for php has changed!
│ libphp-adodb is no longer installed in /usr/share/adodb.
New installation path is now /usr/share/php/adodb.
Please update your php.ini file. Maybe you must also change your
web-server configuraton.

I wasn't able to locate any current path setting to /usr/share/adodb nor
anything there about libphp-adodb so I am totally clueless what, if
anything , I am supposed to put in the php.ini file.

But I continued on with the installation. Everything else went well until
it got to where I was to use the browser to open a config page. I've tried
a number of different paths but can never get to open the

http://ltsp-root01/ltsp-cluster-control/Admin/admin.php from the browser.

In the ltsp-cluster-control.config.php file it has this as the path to
the admin page but that doesn't
work in the browser as a replacement for what the instructions say-

 $CONFIG['rootInstall'] = "/usr/share/ltsp-cluster-control/Admin/";

http://usr/share/ltsp-cluster-control/Admin/admin.php from the browser
gets a file not found error while
/usr/share/ltsp-cluster-control/Admin/admin.php won't open because it
is php and needs apache. Thanks

[Ltsp-discuss] This defies computer science?

2013-09-24 Thread Robert Lefebvre
I have a new installation of Edubuntu 12.04 on a 6 core amd with 16 gb of
ram.

Everything is working fine when logged into the server and at one client
station but none of the other clients will let anyone in. The users on the
"bad" clients do get authenticated but after authentication the screen is
returned to the initial login window requesting the username again.

Here is the really strange part ...

On the client that does connect correctly, any/all users registered in the
server can get in at it.

If I unplug the ethernet cable from it and plug it into another pc then no
one will be able to log in. I find that out as it is the same cable, same
switch, same server settings, same authentication that worked previously on
the one working client.
The only difference I can see is different mac addresses of the PC.

I worked back through with troubleshooting including swapping cables,
swapping swithes, restarting the server, and the clients etc and have
reproduced the symptoms multiple times, multiple pcs. I even considered
that the room had been hit by lightning and all the pcs but one were killed
so I tried my own laptop on the network and got the same results.

The server must have somehow gotten set to only accept a couple of mac
addresses and is canceling the login of any others even if the user is
authenticated.

Your help resolving this is sorely needed and greatly appreciated.

[Ltsp-discuss] lost gui on server

2013-10-01 Thread Robert Lefebvre
I made a new install of edubuntu 12.04 with ltsp last night and left it on.
This morning it was telling me it needed to restart in order to finish
updates and when I did, it gave a window about running in reduced or
limited (I forget the exact term). After clicking to continue the screen
goes black with some text but is not a command line.

How do I get my gui back?

It turned out to be caused by me turning off the video card driver update
before it was completed. I was able to login as admin from one of the
clients, went to Stem Settings and selected Hardware Additional Drivers.
And this time I waited :-)

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Load Balancing in LTSP-cluster

2014-08-24 Thread Robert Lefebvre
I was running EdUbuntu in a school environment and tried to implement
clustering and never was able to get it working. Thehttps://
www.ltsp-cluster.org/ is so old it belongs in the wayback archives. I had
come to the conclusion that the Ubuntu community is more concerned with the
bells and whistles of the desktop than with clustering and that is fine.
But trying to use old, none supported documentation turned into one huge
time sink. I finally concluded that if I ever were to get clustering going
I would need to switch to Debian. Just my opinion but it seems that
community is much more devoted to maintaining clustering capabilities than
the Ubuntu communty by a long shot. Don't waste your time with Ubuntu. They
obviously don't care about clustering so their Edubuntu package is
basically limited to what one server can handle.
