The dsssl style sheets that control the different outputs are ignoring them! They have special parameters where to put the toc, to hide it... The problem you have is that according to the docbook dtd the toc should go in a very specific place. So the simple option is: don't use it, if you want you will still have it in the final output... If ignoring ;-) my advice you want to put it I can tell you to do it... I need to create documents with tables that can be output as SGML (for RCS archiving), PostScript, ASCII and HTML. So far as I can tell, I can't get HTML without the SGML intermediate, but I can't get SGML without using a template, but I can't use the templates because each has it's own issues that I can't seem to figure out, ad nauseum. Please fell free to ask any doubt... I'm not a stupid person, but LyX 1.0.4 is really making me feel that way. As far as LinuxDoc goes, this all worked for me in an older version of LyX (though I can't remember which one.) The only code that changed with 1.0.4 was the addition of docbook as far sgml related stuff is concerned... Thanks , Claudio You can gzip the PS (or better EPS) files. This makes you save quite a lot of megs. But you need to extract the bounding box information first and put it into a separate file. This leaves you with one image.eps.gz and one image.eps.bb file. LaTeX and xdvi should be able to deal with these compressed images automagically. Unfortunately, LyX is not yet able to display them. But you can still use them without problems, you simply need to turn display off in the figure popup and change the name of your image from image.eps to image.eps.gz in that same popup. Below is a little script that can do the trick on hopefully any PS and EPS file. Thanks a lot Claudio

FYI: Compiling lyx-1.04 with gcc-2.95.1 and X11R6.3
Hello, I have built the lyx distributions for a long time now using gcc-2.7.2.3. However when compiling lyx-1.0.4 I had upgraded to gcc-2.95.1 and found out that the compiler is VERY picky about type declarations. The compiler did classify undeclared function types in Xlib.h and Xutil.h from the X11R6.3 distribution as errors, not warnings!! The included header files, via forms.h, were treated as C++ header files instead of C header files. The only way I found to solve this was to add the -fpermissive directive to the compiler. Another way which I did later was to edit the header files themseves by replacing all 'extern XFunction' with 'extern int XFunction'. Is this the correct default for undeclared functions in earlier versions of gcc? At least the executable seem to run correctly. Thank you for a good job with LyX. Svante Signell

I have a few questions about lyx-customization:
1- is there a way to have defaults values in format -- document set as
I want when I begin a new document, for instance: language: frenchb,
font size 12pt
2- I use latex to write documents in multilanguages (french, greek,
sanskrit) is it possible to see greek characters, and
sanskrit-translitterated characters in the graphic interface; this need
to add fonts that lyx could read, to bind the keyboard keys to display
these characters, and sometimes add a "usepackage".
I tried the greek language with lyx: we see the latin caracters in the
lyx window and get greek characters in the dvi file. (there are some
bugs: we cannot get correct tilde accents); to have a
sanskrit-translitterated text I use the csx fonts and a csx.def package
(\usepakage[csx]{inputenc}) and I have binded some keyboard keys to get
special characters in emacs windows (for instance F12 a gives a macron).
Is possible to do something like this with lyx?

Hello, You are right. In fact the problems comes from the lyxrc (I now can export in ps format ; \print_adapt_output is now to false). If I click on "List of Figures" or "List of Tables", why not popup the list of figures/tables as done when I am creating a cross-reference. I realize they are not separated in the popup box. I can't manage to compile sgml tools 2 (compiler error) and not any time to fix this now. however my suse 6.2 distribution has a group with installation of docbook ddt, jade, etc and I have installed all this. so that, logically I should be able to use lyx 1.04 docbook feature. However if I have effectively e docbook template, this don't gives me the "export docbook" menu. Thanks , Claudio You can gzip the PS (or better EPS) files. This makes you save quite a lot of megs. But you need to extract the bounding box information first and put it into a separate file. This leaves you with one image.eps.gz and one image.eps.bb file. LaTeX and xdvi should be able to deal with these compressed images automagically. Unfortunately, LyX is not yet able to display them. But you can still use them without problems, you simply need to turn display off in the figure popup and change the name of your image from image.eps to image.eps.gz in that same popup. Below is a little script that can do the trick on hopefully any PS and EPS file. Thanks a lot Claudio

Hello, I have built the lyx distributions for a long time now using gcc-2.7.2.3. However when compiling lyx-1.0.4 I had upgraded to gcc-2.95.1 and found out that the compiler is VERY picky about type declarations. The compiler did classify undeclared function types in Xlib.h and Xutil.h from the X11R6.3 distribution as errors, not warnings!! The included header files, via forms.h, were treated as C++ header files instead of C header files. The only way I found to solve this was to add the -fpermissive directive to the compiler. Another way which I did later was to edit the header files themseves by replacing all 'extern XFunction' with 'extern int XFunction'. Is this the correct default for undeclared functions in earlier versions of gcc? At least the executable seem to run correctly. Thank you for a good job with LyX. Svante Signell

I have a few questions about lyx-customization:
1- is there a way to have defaults values in format -- document set as
I want when I begin a new document, for instance: language: frenchb,
font size 12pt
2- I use latex to write documents in multilanguages (french, greek,
sanskrit) is it possible to see greek characters, and
sanskrit-translitterated characters in the graphic interface; this need
to add fonts that lyx could read, to bind the keyboard keys to display
these characters, and sometimes add a "usepackage".
I tried the greek language with lyx: we see the latin caracters in the
lyx window and get greek characters in the dvi file. (there are some
bugs: we cannot get correct tilde accents); to have a
sanskrit-translitterated text I use the csx fonts and a csx.def package
(\usepakage[csx]{inputenc}) and I have binded some keyboard keys to get
special characters in emacs windows (for instance F12 a gives a macron).
Is possible to do something like this with lyx?

Hello, You are right. In fact the problems comes from the lyxrc (I now can export in ps format ; \print_adapt_output is now to false). If I click on "List of Figures" or "List of Tables", why not popup the list of figures/tables as done when I am creating a cross-reference. I realize they are not separated in the popup box. I can't manage to compile sgml tools 2 (compiler error) and not any time to fix this now. however my suse 6.2 distribution has a group with installation of docbook ddt, jade, etc and I have installed all this. so that, logically I should be able to use lyx 1.04 docbook feature. However if I have effectively e docbook template, this don't gives me the "export docbook" menu. FYI: Compiling lyx-1.04 with gcc-2.95.1 and X11R6.3
Hello, I have built the lyx distributions for a long time now using gcc-2.7.2.3. However when compiling lyx-1.0.4 I had upgraded to gcc-2.95.1 and found out that the compiler is VERY picky about type declarations. The compiler did classify undeclared function types in Xlib.h and Xutil.h from the X11R6.3 distribution as errors, not warnings!! The included header files, via forms.h, were treated as C++ header files instead of C header files. The only way I found to solve this was to add the -fpermissive directive to the compiler. Another way which I did later was to edit the header files themseves by replacing all 'extern XFunction' with 'extern int XFunction'. Is this the correct default for undeclared functions in earlier versions of gcc? At least the executable seem to run correctly. Thank you for a good job with LyX. Svante Signell

I have a few questions about lyx-customization:
1- is there a way to have defaults values in format --> document set as
I want when I begin a new document, for instance: language: frenchb,
font size 12pt
2- I use latex to write documents in multilanguages (french, greek,
sanskrit) is it possible to see greek characters, and
sanskrit-translitterated characters in the graphic interface; this need
to add fonts that lyx could read, to bind the keyboard keys to display
these characters, and sometimes add a "usepackage".
I tried the greek language with lyx: we see the latin caracters in the
lyx window and get greek characters in the dvi file. (there are some
bugs: we cannot get correct tilde accents); to have a
sanskrit-translitterated text I use the csx fonts and a csx.def package
(\usepakage[csx]{inputenc}) and I have binded some keyboard keys to get
special characters in emacs windows (for instance F12 a gives a macron).
Is possible to do something like this with lyx?

Hello, You are right. In fact the problems comes from the lyxrc (I now can export in ps format ; \print_adapt_output is now to false). Horiz: use extra options and insert something like @{}l@{} this should remove
space between cell and cell.
Vert: Before the table put in TeX mode:

I do not know what a good solution would be in this case. A special case for gcc 2.95? I am sure other software projects have this problem too. It would be interesting to know how it has been fixed. Math Symbols for Laplace- and Z-Operators
Hi For some technical formulae I need to have the Symbol for Laplace (a nice big "L" in script style) and for the z-transform a nice big "Z" also in script style. Do these two characters exist in some math-package, if so, wich package. Your help is very much appreciated. (please e-mail me directly, cause I am not on the mailing-list. Thanks. clicking on list of tables/figures
Feature suggestion. If I click on "Table of Contents", I get a popup list of chapters/sections. If I click on "List of Figures" or "List of Tables", why not popup the list of figures/tables as done when I am creating a cross-reference. I realize they are not separated in the popup box. I am writing a book on PostgreSQL (www.postgresql.org) for Addison, Wesley, Longman. I wanted to try and mention LyX in the preface. Is this the proper text? docbook
I can't manage to compile sgml tools 2 (compiler error) and not any time to fix this now. however my suse 6.2 distribution has a group with installation of docbook ddt, jade, etc and I have installed all this. so that, logically I should be able to use lyx 1.04 docbook feature. However if I have effectively e docbook template, this don't gives me the "export docbook" menu. How did you input the formula? Mathed gives errors when reading it:
