Because it is in the "label" (\cite key?) field whereas (I assume
without having seen a MWE) the others are elsewhere ("author" field for
example).

From

 https://bibdesk.sourceforge.io/manual/BibDeskHelp_2.html

 Citation Keys

A cite key is a unique identifier for a given reference. BibTeX
scans your document for occurrences of a cite command with a cite
key embedded in it, and translates it into a properly formatted
reference. Several patterns are common in choosing cite keys, from
simple ones such as "lastnameYEAR" to more complicated abbreviations
of journal names and author names. BibDesk will automatically
generate cite keys for you (See section Citation Keys), or you can
enter your own in the editor.

-->
BibDesk takes a fairly strict interpretation of the valid characters
for cite keys, and the characters " "@',\#}{~%" (including the space
character) are never allowed, while you will be warned if you use
one of "&$^" in a cite key.
<--

Cite keys are essentially TeX commands, so you should avoid
using underscores, for instance, if you ever need to print the
 actual cite key itself.

RE: Display of supported Bibliography styles in LyX?

2018-04-16 Thread Bernt Lie
Thanks, John

The closest style I’ve come across in LyX, is “ACM-Reference-Format”. That one
is not entirely correct regarding the conference/proceedings style… the *year*
should be towards the end of the reference, and not just after the author names.

The style is for a conference, and follows the style of conferences for a
computer language. Unfortunately (in my view), the style for these conferences
has been defined starting from Word – with no knowledge or care about the
limitations in LaTeX. [“Limitations” in LaTeX in the sense that it is much more
difficult to modify layout in LaTeX than in Word, at least for “simple” users…]

In addition to the reference style, I have problems with:

  * Body font size – is specified as 10.5 point, which is not supported in
LaTeX. Someone directed me to a package for scaling the font size, but that did
not work for me. [Some 30 years, a fellow Ph.D.-student found that the
“optimal” font size for readability was 10.7 point. So there may be some merit
to 10.5 point. However, for me, 11 point or 12 point would be even better  –
today.)
  * Possibly with margins and column gap. And definitely with the top margin
on the first page.
  * The font type in the title – doesn’t seem to be changed to Times Roman as
the remainder of the text is.

A general wish list for LyX could be:

  * Better explanation for how to use conference styles/templates and journal
templates with LyX.
  * The documentation holds some involved description of how to set up Layout
files. But this seems overly complex (?). Maybe a video would be better.

I fear that new (conference/journal) layouts which are not supported by LyX
will be more common in the future, as more and more “amateur typographs”
develop their own styles in Word ☹.

I’ve had problems even with IEEE conference templates… A couple of years ago, I
used an IEEE conference style that was not supported in LyX, so I had to have a
student help me using some other tool. And then, IEEE’s own test tool for
checking whether the papers followed their style, flagged my paper as not
adhering to their style. Those using the Word style had no problem. I suspect
that their LaTeX style was not fully according to the requirements tested in
their test tool…

Interestingly enough... references don't show up AT ALL in my document

Yes, I have used this approach on occasion, but it really "show HTML"

Thank you for that comment Nikola. Our projects are related to
IT system documentation and have not required to use bib. We do
use many external references and the html method does this without

You need to read the  pandoc user guide, which should be installed with pandoc,
or is easily findable with a search.
LyX is not set up to produce bibliographies and references with pandoc. Rather,
there are specific ways that the references and bibliography have to be set up,
which means that you need to find and use the appropriate pandoc options.
I've only just commenced looking at this, so I cannot help with detail, except
to say
1. tex4ht may not be under the most active development, but it continues to
produce good output for me with citations and bibliography.

2. It seems the easiest way to use pandoc for citations and references (until
you work out how to modify the LyX command---under preferences>output--- to get
what you want) is to save as a LaTeX file and run pandoc on the command line.

Hi Nikola,

I would consider it a miracle if exporting to ODF/Word worked perfectly.
LyX is not actually responsible for the export. LyX just uses other
exporters that you have installed on your machine.

If you happen to be using the newest LyX version, 2.2.0, LyX now
supports exporting to ODF using Pandoc. I have no idea if the export is
better/worse than with tex4ht, but Pandoc is under much more active
development I believe so there is a chance it is better. So you could
try installing LyX 2.2.0 and the newest version of Pandoc.

If you are not using LyX 2.2.0, I would warn you to be careful when
changing from LyX 2.1.x to 2.2.0 at an important time. Make sure you
have time to address unwanted consequences of using a major version
upgrade. If you happen to be on Ubuntu, you can easily use 2.2.0
alongside 2.1.x so they do not interfere with each other. For more
information, see:

Exporting to ODF or MS Office ignores any bibliography styles

2016-06-13 Thread Nikola Ivan Leder
I am using Lyx to write my thesis and have run into several problems with
exporting regarding references.

I need are numerical references in numbered by order of appearance in the
text (not sorted alphabetically) with vancouver style.

I set this up with natbib and bibtex8 with vancouver style.
The export to PDF or DVI via luatex gets me a perfect document, everything
else gives me alphabetically ordered references, completely ignoring any
changes I make to document/settings/bibliography.

My bibliography is in .bib made with Jabref.

I need export to word or ODF so I can copy/paste certain parts of the text
to various web forms and such... as well as for correspondence with my
mentor etc..

Is there any way to "fix" the export function?
If I just select all text in the PDF and paste it in a text processor,
there is a lot of manual work to get it to look proper.

thank you in advance!

P.S. tried this in Linux and Windows, behavior is exactly the same

Have You installed the styles in ~/texmf/bibtex/bst? This path is
checked when You refresh Your TeX-information (Tools->Check TeX).

Hope this helps.

This has happened before, I believe, and been asked about on the list. I
don't know if 1.5.svn is different. If not, it should be.

Personally, I agree.
However, the argument for not doing so was that the texmf scanning can take
rather long time, which will slow down reconfiguring.

At least it should be given a less "cryptical" name. "TeX Information"
is not very good.

Re: bibliography styles

2007-02-22 Thread Sophie Vandenbussche

Step by step:

I visited the address you gave me in your previous mail:
https://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5117release_id=12253

I chose the file named LyXWin144Complete-2-11.exe
http://prdownload.berlios.de/lyxwininstall/LyXWin144Complete-2-11.exe
and downloaded it (also tried with LyXWin144Small-2-11.exe
http://prdownload.berlios.de/lyxwininstall/LyXWin144Small-2-11.exe, it
gave the same result). When I click on the download link, I get a
message a little bit strange saying I chose to open a file of BibTex
style...

I double clicked on the file and I obtained the strange message I
reported, then I tried again with the small version and got the same.

Finally I went on the lyx wiki and downloaded + installed the last win
installer present there (lyx-144-2). I had the lyx-144-1 version
installed on my computer before.

Today after reading your mail, I tried again the whole thing: downloaded
LyXWin144Complete-2-11.exe
http://prdownload.berlios.de/lyxwininstall/LyXWin144Complete-2-11.exe
and then installed it without any trouble. By the way I updated my
Miktex at the end of the installation.

It seems that my problem was due to the old lyx version I had on my
computer yesterday. To complete the answer, my OS is windows XP media
center edition.

I observe quite many changes after installation of this last release
144-2-11:

- I now have a dos window opening when I run lyx
- my lyx is at last in french (before, I asked french during
installation but it came in english...)
- no error occurs when clicking on the bibtex button and the styles
appeared in the bibtex options (where before no styles were available, I
had to give the full path each time)

Still, the output I observe in my bibliography has not changed, no
matter which style I choose. I always have the fulle information
including the keywords, the abstract and so on like reported before. Is
there something special to do to choose a style, apart that the
selection by the menu that appears when clicking on the bibtex button?

Uwe, thank you very very much for all this help!

Sophie,

What you describe looks a lot like plainnat.bst, which is included in
LyX. In any case, you probably should use Natbib. For more on Natbib,
see the following page:

http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/HumanitiesLyX#toc12

I'd look at the .bst files included in your basic distribution. If you
don't find anything suitable, there is also a command-line program
called custom-bib that allows you to make your own .bst files.

Sophie,

What you describe looks a lot like plainnat.bst, which is included in
LyX. In any case, you probably should use Natbib. For more on Natbib,
see the following page:

I'd look at the .bst files included in your basic distribution. If you
don't find anything suitable, there is also a command-line program
called custom-bib that allows you to make your own .bst files.

Hello again,

Looking more carefully to things, it seems my problem is more
complicated than choosing a style. I found examples on the internet and
it seems that, as Maria said, the plainnat.bst corresponds to what I am
looking for. But at the moment, no matter what style I choose, I obtain
things like that:

Maria del Carmen Fernandez-Alonso, Francisco Javier Canada, Jesus
Jimenez-Barbero, and Gabriel Cuevas. Molecular recognition of saccharides
by proteins. insights on the origin of the carbohydrate-aromatic
interactions.

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 127(20):73797386, 2005.

no, you're right, it's not the best way for choosing
a bibstyle. If you like, try the attached patch for 1.2.0,
than your bib-gui looks like the attached gif. You'll
get a browser with all available bst-files in your local
TeX-system.

No problem -- the .bbl file (there may be more of them with
bibtopic) is just the stuff which can replace the \bibliography
in the end of your document. So you can develop your paper with
all luxury of bibtex databases, and than send to your publisher
.bbl file together with the rest (or edit .tex file and replace
\bibliography and \bibliographystyle with the content of .bbl
file).

if the \cite are in the chapter where the bibliography is. I need a
global bibliography for the whole document but organized in several
sections. Is there a package than can do that?

Use the bibtopics package.
Search the lyx-users archive for information on using this package with lyx.

Bibliography styles...

2001-11-13 Thread ben

Hi,
I've looked the Herbert help page, but I haven't found what I need,
maybe because I haven't searched enough :-) I would like to have a
bibliography splitted in several sections, each section containing some
of the documents listed. I've tried chapterbib but it seems to work only
if the \cite are in the chapter where the bibliography is. I need a
global bibliography for the whole document but organized in several
sections. Is there a package than can do that?

Thanks for any tips.
