F/OSS software choices: was Creating a statement of account

Quoted For Truth! The absolute truth! Choice and DIY-ability (which is another aspect of choice) is the major reason I use F/OSS. Before getting involved in F/OSS in 1998, I used to pay about $2K per year for software, and I had no problem doing so. With most of my proprietary software, I got my money's worth and more. But you had to do everything the software's way. You couldn't shellscript everything into exactly what you wanted. Often you couldn't add or change features. And all too often, native formats were secret binary that you couldn't mess with. Now I create my UMENU2 lightning fast menu system with tab indented outlines made in VimOutliner. I put tokens in a LyX file and run a Python program against it to get the exact heading numbers I want in my trainer instruction document. I have a diploma, made in Inkscape, whose .svg contains tokens so that I can fill out a YAML file and print diplomas for the whole class, with each student's name, the instructor name, dates, course name, and company name. Scripts personalize my LyX files with the customer's name. A script reads my Gnumeric book order file, deduces which books are print instead of eBooks, and prints mailing labels in the proper fonts for mailing. To me, this customization opportunity to implement my choice of workflow and product is what makes F/OSS so wonderful. Hi Rich When I started using Scrivener, I didn't know about gnumeric or spreadtab, but I've had Scrivener to hand (for about 30 years) and I used it to do spreadsheety arithmetic in plain text files and in the last 10 years in .tex files. Two applications instead of one is a good thing, not a bad one. You're using one application to calculate and process all the numbers and export them as data, and a second that does nothing but format those exported numbers to paper. You're keeping data and appearance separate. and I'm pretty sure doing it with two applications makes it much easier to keep it running correctly year after year. But of course, if you already have it done in LyX and like it that way, well, that's the way you should do it. Re: Creating a statement of account
Hi Rich I don't use Lyx for invoices or any documents with calculations in them. Instead I use Latex usually (depending on what I am doing) with the letter class adapted for window envelopes and my header. Latex takes care of the typesetting and a program called Scrivener looks after the arithmetic. Scrivener is quite an old program, originally written for CPM (it was on the Amstrad Joyce computer if you remember that) and rewritten for MSDOS but it works well for me on Linux using dosemu. It helps me to produce typeset documents such as payslips, remittance advices and lots more - even annual financial statements. Time out. I didn't mention LibreOffice. I mentioned Inkscape, Plain TeX, or just plain ASCII output to the printer. I wouldn't recommend using LibreOffice for this purpose. I have this cool little merge program that prints mailing labels, with the return address in a small font and the To address in a big one. It's basically a looping program that replaces tokens in a Plain TeX file with data items, piles those one on top of another using Plain TeX to paginate, and it prints out my mailing labels. Probably took me 3 hours to write 10 years ago, still working perfectly today. SteveT Steve Litt December 2017 featured book: Thriving in Tough Times http://www.troubleshooters.com/thrive

Well, my view is that you are using the wrong tool, ie typesetting to do bookkeeping instead of letting the bookkeeping do the typesetting. I use SQL-Ledger which is Open Source in Perl and uses LaTeX to prepare the invoices. In my very vague statement I made no such claim that LibreOffice / Microsoft office is suitable, but instead tried to suggest that LaTeX may not be the right tool. Rather, I would rely on purpose-built accounting software to manage finances. This software would be able to focus on the details and complexities of the finances, rather than the details of the output. Those financial details could then be captured and moulded into whatever output format, and with whatever output processor, you prefer (LaTeX, myriad Pandoc-compatible formats, etc.). While I wholly appreciate LaTeX's capabilities, as a general framework lots of folks have adapted it to uses that it, as a typesetting engine, isn't best suited. As one goes from typesetting toward programming, I start to ask myself whether it is the right tool to perform the processing or just to prepare the ultimate output. If one has invoices that are as simple as what I demonstrated, by all means use it. However, not knowing your business finances, I can't make that assessment and would prefer to err on the side of caution. As an example: I use TikZ heavily and it isn't so long ago that I was using it to perform a calculation within an illustration and was surprised to see that a rather basic trigonometric function wasn't available in the version of TeXLive I was using. Keeping everything "in LaTeX" is ideal, but sometimes there are weaknesses or simplifications made in available packages that make this more troublesome/risky (how much of the solution is rigorous versus being a functional hack?) than using an external application. When it comes to finances, I wish to avoid any hint of risk. > I can produce invoices with GnuCash, but they're more parts-focused, not > time-and-expense-focused. This way you get the strength of a proper accounting program but the elegant output of LaTeX. The two key adages I follow in this regard are UNIX's "do one thing, and do it well" and someone else's "use the right tool for the right job." > However, do you have an example .lyx file that isn't working for you and >> an example of what you're trying to achieve (perhaps from a pre-LyX >> interface)? If it's acceptable to use a mono type, I'd just use a program that outputs the invoice to stdout and pipe that to a printer, or make it ito a PDF. If it's guaranteed to always be one page and you want pretty fonts and pictures, use Inkscape to produce a .svg template, and within that template use replaceable tokens for everything. If it might be multiline, it's harder, but you can use break logic to trigger a page footer routine and a next-page-header routine to create several .svg files, then use (I'd imagine) pdfjam to turn those into a multipage PDF. Or, you can do something similar, except instead of .svg use plain TeX (which is much simpler than LaTeX) to make the header, footer, and line items, in the fonts you desire. LyX is a tool that's priceless for creating fixed-text PDF files, and if it were ever made a true XML it would be priceless also for creating ePub and HTML and everything else, but in my opinion it's wy too much tool for the concise and specific task of writing a report or invoice. When you're creating your company's accounting statements for stockholders within your yearly report, THAT's the time to use LyX (probably with plenty of replacement tokens). Creating a statement of account
I'm trying to create an account statement for clients whom I invoice by time and expense and I'm missing something in my efforts. The statement is a running explanation of payments received and charges against those payments. I'm trying to use the invoice2 package, so far unsuccessfully. The document class is KOMA article. At the top of the first page is my company letterhead (a .pdf file) in a titlehead environment, followed by a title (the name of the project or case). The preamble contains: \date{} \usepackage{scrpage2} \usepackage{invoice2} \usepackage{longtable} \pagestyle{scrheadings} Following the address (address environment) is a paragraph then the table which I understand should use the capabilities of the invoice2 package. I've not figured out how to make the table compatible with that package and would appreciate a clue stick. I can make the calculations outside the statement and enter results manually but would like to have the invoice2 package do this for me. Regards, Rich

Someone uses my Bugzilla account
Hello, Stefan wrote me this mail yesterday: Am 04.11.2008 um 16:04 schrieb Stefan Schimanski: Hallo! I logged into Bugzilla now and changed my password, but I still feel insecure. Is it possible to completely delete my Bugzilla account so I can create a new one if needed again? RE: how to into account the franch aspell dictionnary
I am at present using Lyx 1.3.3 with the qt version under windows, but I am not able to use the french dictionnary. The english dictionnary works fine, but I cannot find the way to put the french dictionnary into account by Lyx. I know that we have to put the same file in the lib and share folder of lyx, but which files exactly? If someone would have the dictionnary, it would be a great help for me. Sorry, Harold, I should have mentioned that you need first to install aspell and the aspell French dictionary and data. Then, you should copy ALL together the data and dictionary files from aspell directories into the directories indicated in the discussion suggested by me in my previous post. It sounds like your browser is broken, all the form does is check that the address is well-formed (as far as I know). Use a different browser and try again.. regards john -- I am a complete moron for forgetting about endianness. May I be forever marked as such.
cannot create bugzilla account
Dear Lyxers, I used kfm (the K file manager) to visit http://bugzilla.lyx.org/createaccount.cgi and create a bugzilla account (at least I tried). It tells: To create a bugzilla account, all that you need to do is to enter a legitimate e-mail address. The account will be created, and its password will be mailed to you. Optionally you may enter your real name as well. but unfortunately, I did not find a mail with the password afterwards (some hours later). Could this be related to the "legitimate" requirement? How is this checked, is there a response for illegitimate adresses? (May be the adress kfm uses for anonymous logins is different from the one I gave to bugzilla) Or could this have to do with the rather outdated browser or my non-existend DNS-entry for an existent IPN? cheers Guenter -- [EMAIL PROTECTED]

G-Brief(German) bank account information
Lyx version 1.1.6fix3 Hi I use g-brief(german) as template for a letter. I need my bank account displayed, thus I filled the fields Bank, BLZ and Konto. The result, however, does not show the information. Anything else to do? Thanks oliver
