On Thu, 29 Jan 2009, A B wrote: I seem to remember that a LyX / wiki connection was discussed some time ago and it just struck me that that is also an nice way of collaborating. Hi, Yes, I'm the guy usually bringing this up :-) The ability to save LyX documents as a wiki page and load a wiki page into Lyx. In non-lyx environment there might be a wiki page for information sharing/documentation, and if you can edit the wiki page through LyX, well, that would be very nice, when one consideres the (lack of?) edit-friendlyness in wiki. I agree that wiki pages aren't that easy to edit. Some tools exist to edit the pages in a separate text editor, and I'm pretty sure WYSIWYGI tools are on their way as well. However, note that AFAICT, it's only the following functionality that you gain: 1. The document is stored in a common area (the wiki) and can be edited using LyX.. 2. The document (i.e. wiki page) is stored so that's it's easily visible and searchable through a regular browser 3. The document is editable also through the web browser. The first functionality could just as well be implemented by several other means, e.g. by using a VCS to upload files to a public repository. This would also give you additional functionality. The second functionality could also be implemented by uploading (comitting/pushing) not only the .LyX-file, but also a .html-version of the file. And a PDF while you're at it. Alternatively, the system could automatically generate a PDF/HTML-file on the server once a .lyx-file has been uploaded (comitted/pushed). The third functionality is more difficult though. Why am I saying this? Well, I think it's important to ask ourselves what the collaboration functions are... to me the number one functionality would be to let several people edit the same document at once. Technically, saving is nothing more than posting a long text to a web page? Yes. loading = reading a frame on a wiki page? Yes. Add a html/wiki -- LyX converter and we are all done! Heck, with the current LyX format it feels like replacing \section with == Well, in principle, yes. :-) /Christian -- Christian Ridderström, +46-8-768 39 44http://www.md.kth.se/~chr

I prefer the DnD approach because it is much faster. Is the reason single clicking is to slow because you have to move the point a long distance, and thus would have to click many times to move it? Or is it because there are several points that you have to move separately? Maybe the answer will affect how the UI should be, e.g. if it'd make sense to be able to select several points and then move them simultaneously. But the .zlyx could be used as an export file format to share with others, then one could just merge back the .lyx embedded into the .zlyx : I see this as a way one can use this feature, but some may want to use it otherwise (as everyone does when using OOo for example, reinsert the figure) This is where things get messy. If you just want an export format, then that actually exists already, kind of. There's a script, lyxpak.py, in the development tree that will pack a LyX file and all its dependencies, wherever they may be, into a tar, I think. Then it can be shipped off, unpacked, etc. The difficulty is then in updating. Obviously, you can unpack the tar yourself and do with it as you will. But, for security reasons, you do not really want LyX to be able automatically to unpack and write to arbitrary locations in your filesystem. Aren't there options to 'tar' that can help with this, e.g. only allowing things to be written to somewhere inside a subdirectory. As for the updating, I don't think 'tar' will be enough... you could expand the .tar-file into a separate directory and then compare the directories and manually move the files that have changed _and_ that you want to use to replace your version of those files. Then I thought a bit more for a solution, but what I came up with really just ended up amounting to a version control system where you were emailing changes. So why not go for a distributed version control system that supports sending changes (or all of it) as e-mail. This way you can get by without a server. /Christian -- Christian Ridderström Mobile: +46-70 687 39 44

Under Tools-Preferences-Shortcuts-Documents and window, there is a key 'buffer-export' with the assigned value of 'Ctrl-X H'. That key combination does nothing; the status line tells me it's been disabled. What I don't know is what flavor of buffer export it is supposed to invoke. If I try to change the valued from 'Ctrl-X H' to 'Ctrl-H' a message pops up telling me that chord is already assigned to buffer-export. Under File-Export I can manually select pdflatex and that works as intended. In ~/.lyx/bind/my.bind the 'buffer-export' value is assigned to the key 'Ctrl-H', but that does not work either. It moves the cursor a line above the title, but that's it. I'd appreciate learning what to do to get ctrl-h to export the buffer using pdflatex. Of course, learning why the icon bar handles don't let me move them would also be appreciated. Here's a (very) partial answer. I think that 'buffer-export' requires an argument, e.g. 'pdf2' to say what kind of export you want. Maybe that's incompatible with just using 'Ctrl-x h' for export? You could try doing M-x (should give you a prompt, and then type) buffer-export pdf2 After getting that to work, you could probably bind a command that does the above to a keyboard shortcut. Or ask on the developers list... :-) /Christian -- Christian Ridderström Mobile: +46-8 768 39 44
Tip: How to type degreen symbol in Windows using the numeric key pad
Hi, I searched the lists for how to type a degree symbol in LyX under Windows and didn't find something that I thought was really easy. So here's an alternative (which may well have drawbacks), e.g that it requires your keyboard to have some kind of numeric key pad. Ok (also expected, and yes, I simply copied the InstantPreviwe-page to a different wiki server -- www.pmichaud.com) So it does not appear to be a question of the amount of text. On Wed, 9 Jun 2004, Paul A. Rubin wrote: Actually, I think it *is* a matter of the amount of text. The page above was on a different server. So you think the text quantity issue is tied to a specific server (as opposed to a specific client, or client configuration, or failure to make an appropriate propitiation to the gods before clicking save)? I don't know what I think - the last time I actually tried to get a handle on this problem nothing made sense really... You're right. Deleting paragraph 5 did not do the job, but deleting 4 and 5 let me save it. So we know this problem only occurs if the size is above a certain limit. I do this from my office (Ethernet to OC3 (?) link to regional net). I have a personal firewall on my office PC, and there are allegedly firewalls in place between my building and our campus and between our campus and Out There. The firewall could be a common denominator... my router at home has a built in gateway. Actually, I wonder if the problem disappeared when I got a new router at home? If I have enough energy I'll see if I can plug the old router back in and see if I get problem again. However, the building firewall (allegedly) only filters inbound traffic, and I believe the same holds for the campus firewall. So the edited page should be reaching the server. This seems to be a problem that only happens when you: * Do the save from some network (unknown what the characteristics are) * The page contains more text than some unknown limit Maybe there is something in the network path that doesn't like posting data over a certain size? Highly unlikely in my case. The server I used for a successful remote post is on the same network segment as my office PC, so the successful and unsucessful traffic should have followed pretty much identical routes. Ok, that's actually good since it means that the problem is closer. The server has a static IP and my PC gets its IP address by DHCP, but that seems unlikely to explain the difference. I agree. Hmm. Just edited the page successfully from two PCs across the hall from my office (same segment). One was Win 98, the other Win XP (same as my office), so the OS is not the differentiator. (Incidentally, FYI, the Wiki pages do not display correctly on Netscape 4.76, perhaps indicating a problem with CSS support in an older browser.) Probably... was it really bad? (Maybe it's enough if I write a note in the Site.FAQ that Netscape 4.76 is too old.) Aha! (Or perhaps I should say Aha??) I turned off my firewall momentarily (scary thing to do here), and an edit went through just fine. Stranger still, I then turned the firewall back on, and I can still edit the test page. Ok... I can buy that turning of the firewall (what kind of firewall btw?) allows you to edit, but why would it keep working??? I can't find anything in the firewall log with respect to traffic to/from wiki.lyx.org. However, there is an entry with a similar IP address (maps to tott.linpro.no). I think the wiki server is in Norway and here's a funny thing: wiki.lyx.org is an alias for aussie.lyx.org. aussie.lyx.org has address 80.232.38.164 tott.linpro.no has address 80.232.38.218 so these two machines are very close... this seems significant since I don't remember encountering this problem on other wiki servers. It's about the right time frame for one of my unsuccessful edit attempts (prior to turning the firewall off), and it indicates that the firewall blocked 19 ICMP Type 3 (Destination Unreachable) packets from tott.linpro.no, apparently in response to traffic I sent. Ok, this is getting a bit stochastic. I closed the browser and restarted it, then (with the firewall on) edited the LotsOfText page and tried to save. The browser hung, and the firewall reported a bunch of ICMP 3 packets from tott.linpro.no. Fine. I then ran netstat to check network connections, tried another edit (without shutting down the firewall, without restarting the browser) and the edit went through (!?). Then I tried another edit, and it failed, but I got no new ICMP packets from tott.linpro.no. And then another attempt succeeded. This reminds me of something else that I've noticed... the first time I want to upload a file, I have to click on the upload button twice (nothing happens after the first click, just as if a request has been sent but there's no response). I'll bring this up on the devel list to see if tott.linpro.no is known. /Christian -- Christian Ridderström http://www.md.kth.se/~chr

When the music suits you, you're all set. Go to Edit-Preferences-Look n' Feel-Bind file and change that to the one you want to use. Then run Edit-Reconfigure, exit LyX and restart it. Check default lyx-dir/bind for a lot of examples how to bind keys to things. You can then define your own in ~/.lyx/bind It's not quite that easy I think. You need to define a command sequence that invokes 'buffer-export'. Doing 'buffer-export latex' exports LaTeX, but when I try 'buffer-export pdfLatex' it says command deactivated or something. So I think it's a matter of figuring out what the argument should be. /Christian -- Christian Ridderström http://www.md.kth.se/~chr
Re: archive for lyx document
On Wed, 14 Jul 2004, Georg Baum wrote: I wonder whether there could be something like an archive for a lyx file and the additional stuff for it (such as figures, bibliography). It would help to keep things neatly together without bothering about pathes. Personally I think that it is the wrong direction to add file archiving capabilities to lyx, I prefer to use specialized tools for that task. You should file this as an enhancement request on bugzilla if you don't want it to be forgotten. Putting the archive capability in LyX might be wrong, If you file an enhancement request, I think you should you suggest (as an alternative) that LyX should be able to create a list of all files that your document depends on. Then you could use this list to create the archive yourself, manually adding any other files you think should be included. So if I have finished work with a lyx file and all its figures I would evoke in Lyx: export to archive. Next time I want to work with it after perhaps having moved it to another place or even another machine I would ask LyX to open the archive Don't forget that you may still lack some .sty-files etc on the other system, so it won't be fool-proof. /Christian -- Christian Ridderström http://www.md.kth.se/~chr

Unwanted pagenumbering in Contents (report class).
Hi LyX-users I'm writing a technical report, using the class: report. How can I remove the pagenumber from the 'Contents'-pages? (I've tried using \thispagestyle{empty}, but it doesn't work). Extra blank page to achieve odd pagenumber
Hi LyX-users 1. How can I make LyX/TeX insert an extra blank page, so that chapters always begin on an odd pagenumber? 2. Using the 'Paragraph properties', should perhaps allow one to do this feature in future versions of lyX. I'm using the 'report'-class. y.s. Christian Ridderström
Special font for title and author-lines, or Alt. How to change font in one paragrahp
Hi I'm writing a conference paper that requires me to use Times New Roman (or Times) for the main text, but 18pt Arial bold for the title, 10pt Arial bold for the authors and 10pt Arial for author affilation. All of this should furthermore be left-justified and at the top of the page. I.e., it should look something like this: ---Top of page | Title line in 18pt Arial bold | | Authors in 10pt Arial bold | Author affiliation in 10pt Arial | | | I think that I should probably just use a standard paragraph-type and change font/size for these lines, but how do I do that? BiBTeX and nocite
Hi I had the same problem as described by Marc below. "Marc" == Marc Van Droogenbroek writes: Marc Hello! I have to write a document that only contains \nocite Marc references. The \nocite references were included as LaTeX Marc commands. Apparently therefore LyX doesn't launch BibTeX. Marc The solution I found was to include a \cite reference (from the Marc menu) and to remove it afterwards. Marc Is there a better solution to this? There is no direct support for nocite currently. The only solution I can think about is to add all the \nocite'd entries as notmal citation insets, but with a % marked as TeX just before (therefore, they will be in comments for LaTeX, but visible for LyX). Hope this helps. JMarc - Assuming that this problem has not been fixed in versions of LyX later than 1.1.2, I'd like to suggest the following: Add an option to the dialog box for inserting BiBTeX-citations that allows the user to mark it as of the type: "nocite" I also tried the suggested solution of putting a '%' in TeX-mode just in front of a normal citation, but that didn't produce anything either. If anyone knows of a different workaround to this problem, I'd be grateful. /Christian Ridderström
lyxdiff
Hi I've been looking for a tool that compares two .lyx-files and marks the places where they differ. Searching the net, I found a small script called "texdiff". There was no manual or anything, but I got it working. It is used as follows:texdiff new_version old_version and produces a new file: new_version.diff.tex that you can compile and look at. The differences have been marked according to different styles (bold text, with margin arrows, or withing thick brackets). This works, but first you have to convert both versions of you .lyx-files to .tex-files. This might be possible to do directly with a .lyx-file. Unfortunately, 'texdiff' uses a program called 'sed', and I don't know enough about it or the .lyx-format to make it work with a .lyx-file. If there is anybody out there that has the time and sed-skill to convert "texdiff" into "lyxdiff", I've attached the "texdiff"-files (that I found at: http://www.dis.uniroma1.it/PUB/italiano/texdiff/ ) Christian Ridderström PS. I saw something in the announcement about the Lyx file-format being changed, so maybe this should wait. Maybe it is just bad practice to let other programs/scripts mess with the .lyx-file? Possible bug related to BibTex insert dialog, showing the same entry multiple times
Hi I just wanted to report the following behaviour: In the dialog to insert Bibtex-references, each bibtex entry appeared several times. So if I had a bibtex entry @article{Ridderstrom:2000, }; The list would show Ridderstrom:2000: Ridderstrom:2000 When I changed the content in the Bibtex reference box from chr.default, chr to chr.default.bib,chr.bib this behaviour disappeared!
