Tip; Sorting Your Dock ITems
Hello everybody This is something which we here use all the time, but others may not be aware of it. So I thought I would bring it to the attention of the group as it could save some work later if, like ours, your dock is heavily populated. Did you know that there is an operating system shortcut for rearranging the sequence of items in your dock? We prefer to keep everything arranged alphabetically; just, I guess, because we're fussy about organisation and that goes for everything in our lives including our house. Anyway, I digress. The key combination Option+Left/Right-Arrow will allow you to move items in your dock into a sequence that you prefer. For example, if you have two items which both begin with the letters S A, you can use either the VoiceOver shortcut Control+Option+D or the OS shortcut Control+F3 to bring up the dock, then type in the first two letters of your item. But if the first one in sequence isn't the one you most frequently use, it can be annoying to have to move to the second one. So why not just move the item using the above shortcut, so that it;s first in your list? To do this, highlight the item you want to move and, to move it up the list, use Option+Left Arrow. To move the item down the list, use Option+Right Arrow. We prefer to store the dock in alphabetical sequence, so that we know exactly where to look. Just as we know where everything is on our hard drive because we store things in logical places with logical names. I just thought I'd share that, since it's something which we use a lot and which others may not know about. It's one of the most useful OS shortcuts in our opinion. Sure; i personally could drag and drop the items using the trackpad; but that's not the point. I always try to use Voiceover as frequently as I can so that I'm reasonably up on accessibility issues. Re: Mac Access Support; Administration And List Policy, [Response]
You have my blessing to remove me from this list. As a retired veterinarian, emeritus professor, deaf-blind individual, rower, cross-county skier, and guide dog owner, I have in the past, and continue do do so today, belonged to numerous lists. And and I have never encountered such rude list owners in my life. Obviously, you don't like your hypocritical boat . being rocked, because it was YOU Lynn. YES, YOU Lynn who posted those nonsense subject headings! Finally, before you terminate me forever from this list, I would like to point out that one of your list controllers (James Austin) answered this query of mine on-list and posted the same question to you and Gordon! Linda Mumford -- On Aug 3, 2011, at 6:59 AM, Gordon Lynne Smith wrote: Hello Linda I am taking the liberty of replying off list, and also carbon copying this to our two assistant list controllers so that they know precisely what I have said to you, in the event of any query or dispute. It has come to our notice Linda, that you have recently made a couple of list administration related comments on list. Whilst Gordon and I welcome your feedback, since you have repeatedly made reference to list rules, as you call them, (list policy, as we prefer to phrase it), not that it really matters, I would point out to you that it is also stipulated in list policy that, should you have any questions or comments regarding list policy, you should not post them to the list; but contact either the support address, supp...@mac-access.net, whence this message is being sent, or either of our two very able and capable list controllers: Anne Robertson, a...@anarchie.org.uk, or: James Austin, james.aus...@mac-access.net and one of us will be delighted to address your questions directly. If you opt to contact the assistant list controllers and they don't feel it appropriate for them to do so, they will forward your request to us directly and we will address it. In this particular instance, I also wanted to explain to you the situation so that you understand where we're going. Gordon and I run this list, along with all other mac Access Dot Net resources. Therefore, our decisions related to the list are final. If people don't like the way we run it, they're at perfect liberty to leave the group. That said, we always try to listen and to engage in constructive dialogue with our members wherever possible. We have, unfortunately, had a couple of situations arise recently where we have had to remove people from the group because of unacceptable behaviour and or attitudes. I sincerely hope that won't happen again; as it's something that gives us no satisfaction whatsoever. We will not, however, permit * anybody * to turn Mac Access into a flame war. If * anybody * tries to do so, they will be moderated as a first resort and, if they still do not comply, they will be removed. I am not suggesting that in any way you have done anything wrong. I'm simply making the situation clear so that everybody concerned has a full understanding of the position. Gordon and I run these groups as a hubby, alongside our professional and, just at the moment, very stressful personal commitments. Therefore, we are not always able to devote as much time to the group as we would like. Sometimes, it is inevitable that things get missed; although we do try to monitor list traffic as closely as possible. As recent events have shown, we're not perfect Linda; we do make mistakes and in those events we're more than willing to hold up our hand and admit to having done so and, where appropriate, apologise. In recent times, as you would see if you were to take the time and trouble to check out the archives of the list over recent weeks and months, I have made numerous requests on list for people to observe subject lines. However, Linda, we are simply not able to force people to comply all the time; and it's true to say also that I and, possibly, yourself have missed the opportunity to make changes as traffic on list has increased significantly as the number of members grows. So Linda, in summary, I would ask you please to refrain from sending administrative requests to the group, although I want to make it clear to you that I fully understand that your motives were in no way malicious. I understand your frustration and, in actual fact, I share it. But this is a matter which members need to discuss with the administrators, as doing so on list contravenes list policy in itself, and, I would also point out that we can act more quickly if you bring it to our attention off list as messages to the support address are always prioritised. If you have queries or comments regarding the way the list is administered or the behaviour of members, please bring the issue to the attention of one of the above mentioned people and we will be happy to investigate and take the

It may very well be 5.0 now, in which case I haven't received the update. Re: Apple Care Question.
Hello Jim Hopefully I can respond to this without anybody taking me out of context. :) You receive 90 days of complimentary support from Apple which includes basic installation and setup, plus 1 years' limited warranty on your hardware. It is my understanding that AppleCare gives you access to additional resources; but what I found odd was that they say that your AppleCare plan ends 3 years from the day you bought the machine. So to me, that only means they give you 2 years of extended cover, not 3. However, I don't dispute what others have said about this; in as much as it has allowed them to receive replacement hardware so it seems like a worthwhile expenditure. How Can I Remove Items From iTunes?
Hi Everyone, I have some mp3 files that I have downloaded in the past, but now want to delete from my iTunes music table. Flaming
Hello everybody This is one of those messages I wish I never had had to write. But this needs to be reaffirmed so I'd best get it over with now. The list policy document located at http://www.tft-bbs.co.uk/mac-access-welcome.html makes it very clear that flaming won't be tolerated on this list. Recently, because I haven't wanted to take any action against anybody, things have been slipping and there has been a bit of flaming on this list. That, as of now, is a situation which will be rectified. As per her request, for instance, Linda Mumford has been removed from this group. Frankly she was nothing but trouble from the day she joined; and I shouldn't have tolerated it for as long as I did. However, she is the first member I have had to remove because of unacceptable behaviour. I went out of my way, on and off list, to be courteous and polite to that lady; so I really don't know where she gets her views of what constitutes Rude from. However, she's gone now and hopefully she might eventually see the error of her ways. OK, so she's history; but we have to think of the future of the group. Gordon and I are currently having to deal with a very difficult personal situation whereby 2 members of our joint family are being treated for cancer. Those situations are obviously at the forefront of our minds; and we are devoting most of our time towards aiding their recovery. Earlier this week we came very close to announcing the closure of this group, owing to the persistent trouble-causing which has gone on here recently. But we opted not to do that because it would be to the detriment of the very large majority of members who have behaved absolutely impeccably and totally in the spirit of the group's aims. However, from this point on, we will be enforcing the rules to the letter with regards flaming. Any member who does it will be moderated and, if necessary, removed; end of story. I sincerely hope it won't be necessary. Gordon and I totally acknowledge that we aren't above making mistakes; and we've made a few recently. We too need to take more care in how we say what we say, and that we will do. But those who are determined, like Linda, to twist what others say to suit their own purposes won't be pacified in future; I will simply do what's necessary for the good of the group. As Leonard Nimoy (alias Mr. Spock) so famously said, The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few; or the one. That is how it will be. Focus on the track you want to delete in the music table and press the backspace/delete key. The track will be gone. You can highlight multiple tracks and delete them all at one time as well. Re: Tip; Sorting Your Dock ITems
Oh yeah. I use this shortcut all the time. it is very very useful and I think is dissc used in one of the vo appendices I read once. lol! I hate that shortcut though.I wish there was a way just to do it with out thinking about it lol! On Aug 3, 2011, at 4:51 AM, Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith wrote: Hello everybody This is something which we here use all the time, but others may not be aware of it. Re: Apple Care Question.
Apple Care has been good to me over the years. 1. The largest number of refusals has been water drops . All the smaller Apple devices have a sensor that changes color with too much moisture, and if the sensor is marked then you are pretty much out of luck. My daughter has a Mac Book Pro that she dropped and then the hard disk started to fail. We brought the system into the Apple Store told them the computer started acting bad after being dropped. The Genius examined the exterior case and decided to replace the hard disk for free. I expect that if the case had more then the occasional scratches they would have charged us. WQuestion about 1 password on Lion
Hello, I believe some of you use 1 password on Lion. On Snow Leopard I used to start 1 password, enter my master password, go to the Logins table to locate a web site of interest, and press Command+Option+Return. this started Safari, opened the required web page and automatically input my user name and password so that I am ready to do secure things. If I do the above on Lion Safari automatically starts and opens the correct web page but does not automatically fill in the name and password. If while Safari is open I tab back to my 1 password window and press Command+Option+Return again then my user name and password are usually automatically entered. However this is all more difficult than it was on Snow Leopard. I believe I am using the latest beta version of 1 password. Any hints on the easiest way to login to a web site using 1 password on Lion? Sorry if this has already been discussed and I have missed it. Is it possible to Move and Merge Folders in Lion?
Hi Zack, John, Paul and All, I'm starting this as a new thread because I have a related question but didn't want to hijack Paul's original thread. Has anyone tried merging 2 folders using just the commands in Lion? One of the things I like most about MoveAddict is it's intelligent and flexible behavior when merging folders that contain files and subfolders with duplicate names. I gave this a quick test using Lion's Command+C and Command+Option+V to attempt to merge two folders of the same name that contained a mix of different and same-named files. While Lion presented a warning dialog telling me a folder of the same name already exists, when I chose to continue it did not merge, just seems to have blown away the target folder and files and replaced it with the source. I did the usual digging for answers but didn't yet find any Lion command that would perform a move and merge in one stroke as MoveAddict does so well. Any thoughts? Re: Is it possible to Move and Merge Folders in Lion?
Please correct me if I am entirely wrong, but I recall reading somewhere that if you drag a folder onto another, you have the option to merge those folders. Of course, now that I need the info, I can't find where I thought I had read it, but I am fairly certain this was a new feature in Lion. Re: Migrate Time Machine backup to new Mac in Lion
Hi Sarah, Just a word of warning about migrating Time Machine backups in Lion. You might want to read through the current reader reports discussions about Time Machine under Lion at the macintouch web site: http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/lion/ The issue is that if you have been using a third-party NAS device for Time Machine backups, it may not support Time Machine under Lion due to enforcement of AFP authentication. Even though the standards for Time Machine support have been previously published, in the past many devices could support Time Machine without being fully compliant with the specifications, that are now required for Lion. So you should check whether your NAS devices (other than Time Capsule) have firmware updates or other notes about support with Lion. Also, I recall that nearly two years ago on this list, Dane asked about USB modem support for dial-up and FAX, and I pointed him to Macintouch discussions about using a Zoom USB modem (or other device that had 64-bit support) in favor of the Apple (32-bit) modems that were then being discontinued. This was also discussed in the above Lion related pages: begin quote Benoit Evans David Charlap asked: Is it the modem or dial-up connectivity [that Apple dropped]? Apple dropped its USB add-on 32-bit modem from their hardware product line. Everything else related to using the modem (e.g., dial-up connectivity and file faxing) still works if you have a suitable third-party USB 64-bit modem. One that works is the USRobotics USR 5627 (available from Amazon and other vendors). end quote Here are a few representative excerpted quotes on the subject of Lion Time Machine backup on other devices from the last few days: begin quote Thomas Armbrüster There are two problems with Lion and 3rd-party NAS devices. First is the new authentication method, which in some cases prohibit to mount the NAS. Second is Time Machine, which is a completely different case. Since 2009 Apple had made public its Time Machine Network Interface Specification, which you can get in the developer documentation. And no NAS I have seen and tested in the last year did comply with this specification except Time Capsule. So, even if, in the past, Time Machine worked with the 3rd-party NAS devices, it was not supported by Apple, but tolerated. And Lion now takes it seriously. end quote begin quote Aaron Pressman So in regards to all kinds of server connections, especially NAS and non-Mac servers, Apple has really fallen down in the customer communication department. With little publicity, Apple has disabled many of the popular and long-used authentication methods that non-Mac servers rely such as Cleartxt Passwrd, MS2.0, 2-Way Randnum exchange, and DHCAST128. Lion Macs will only, by default, out of the box, authenticate via DHX2. Good news: you can restore some of the other methods by mucking with the terminal. See: Lion Server: Connecting to legacy AFP services http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4700 Also, NAS makers are updating their software. But this seems like a change affecting an awful lot of people and Apple should have been more up-front about it. More background can be read here http://macwindows.com/TIP-Workaround-Lion-AFP-NAS.html and here http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2388928,00.asp end quote begin quote Meta Sienkiewicz I will affirm that the manufacturer of my NAS hardware is working on firmware updates to make their equipment compatible with Lion and Time Machine. Today my Buffalo Tech LinkStation Live let me know there was a new firmware update. I went to the website to see what that was about and found that besides the current update there was also a Beta firmware that said it Fixed the problem that Time Machine backup could not be performed on Mac OS X v10.7 Lion. I am still running Leopard and Snow Leopard so will not need this right away but it is good to know Buffalo Tech is working to make things compatible for when I do update/upgrade my Macs. end quote begin quote MacInTouch Upgrading to Mac OS X Lion (OS X 10.7) FAQ [Drobo Technical Support] http://support.drobo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/602 Comment Richard Barrett I have a DataRobotics Drobo FS NAS bought, in part, because I wanted to use it as a LAN Time Machine backup repository. I was initially concerned about reports of Time Machine incompatibility with various NAS devices due to AFP. The Drobo firmware update 1.2.0 described here resolved the problem: http://www.drobo.com/support/updates/firmware/Release_Notes_Drobo_FS_Firmware_1.2.0.pdf I now have a machine running Lion and others running Snow Leopard coexisting on my LAN and sharing the Time Machine partition on the Drobo FS. end quote This is only meant to be a representative selection to outline some of the issues. Anyone who is really interested in the details of support for NAS devices should go read the full discussion pages. HTH. Cheers, Esther On Aug 2, 2011, at 19:57,
iTunes behaves differently in Lion
Since using Lion, iTunes functions differently than before and I'm wondering how to get it to behave like the old days. I used to be able to arrow through my list of songs with the up and down arrows. Now I need VO with them. I also used to be able to type the first few letters of a song and it would go to that song. I can't do that anymore. Why is it that everything in Lion seems to revolve around tables and there's no way to change that,, or is there and I just don't know? I'm pulling my hair out! Hi! No, it is not. However, if you use Vommand-Option right and left, VoiceOver for some reason announces the movement. Not sure why this is, exactly, since it seems strange to me that two commands that seemingly do the same thing act differently. Some iTunes references [was Re: How Can I Remove Items From iTunes?]
Hi Desi and Others, A lot of questions come up about iTunes, so I'll list some places you can find answers. First, I'll just mention that iTunes works as a database program, so when you add and delete tracks, you should always do this through the iTunes program, as Marcy explained. It's like working with phone numbers or the post office -- the record for where to find a track or whether it's in your library depends on the directory that's maintained by iTunes, and not simply whether the track is somewhere on your computer. If you move your track to a different location or delete it without telling iTunes, all it knows is that there's a broken link. At best it can offer to search through you Music library location to try to find it, but that's very inefficient. When you press delete, you should be presented with a dialogue asking if you want to send the track to the trash or keep it in the itunes library. Sending it to the trash will do just that, and it will disappear forever when you empty the trash. On Aug 3, 2011, at 5:32 PM, Desi Noller wrote: Hi Esther, Thank you so much! Re: Migrate Time Machine backup to new Mac in Lion
Hi Dónal, I think that these are only issues for NAS storage devices, but I always keep bootable clones handy. The post was more directed on migrating time machine backups. The server authentication protocol problems are related to Paul's query about 1Password having to rewrite it's interfaces. I'm meaning to answer that separately :) I'd check by taking a read through the (updated) Take Control Guides for (Upgrading to and Running) Lion. Cheers, Esther On Aug 3, 2011, at 10:59, Dónal Fitzpatrick wrote: Hello Esther, I presume the problems with nas storage devices don't extend to bog-standard USB/Firewire external HDs? Dónal On 3 Aug 2011, at 21:12, Esther wrote: Hi Sarah, Just a word of warning about migrating Time Machine backups in Lion. Re: Some iTunes references [was Re: How Can I Remove Items From iTunes?]

Re: Mac Mini Server question
Hi Jim, I'm not on Lion, but usually your login options are kept locked. Is there a button that might be labeled something like Click the lock to make changes? that you can navigate to and click? An authentication window should appear prompting you for your Admin password. Then try setting up the login options for your account. The pop up button for Automatic login and the check box for Use VoiceOver in the login window should be undimmed. When you're finished, you can VO-Space on the Click the lock to prevent further changes button to lock things again. Hope things are working well now for you. Incidentally, it seems that with the newer Mac Mini servers that come with both Lion server and Lion preloaded, you don't have to go through the complicated upgrade path you faced in order to just use the new Man Mini with Lion. Re: iTunes behaves differently in Lion
Hi Kristeen and Sarah, I believe this is the iTunes 10.4 update, which is separate from the update to OS X 10.7 Lion. It's true that this version of iTunes is supposed to be optimized for Lion, but I think the issues may be with iTunes rather than Lion. I also think so. I would still bug it. I think there's an iTunes section there. I could be wrong but I would also email accessibility@apple.comwith a detailed bug report if possible.. Take care all. New Member Welcome
Hello everybody It is traditional when new members join the Mac Access Dot Net email forum that Gordon and I try to welcome the new member(s) personally. In keeping with that tradition, we are delighted to welcome Randy Stegall to our number. We are gratified by the fact that Mac Access is growing globally. We hope that you will find Mac-Access@mac-access.net a pleasant, friendly and worthwhile place to be. In here you will find a wealth of knowledge, and people with a variety of skill levels ranging from the total novice, to the application developers with advanced skills. Then there are those who don't yet own a Mac, but have a keen interest. We hope you will feel free to post your questions and constructive comment, whatever your skill levels may be. Be assured, there will be none of the ridiculing and flaming which we know takes place in other groups. That kind of behaviour is not tolerated in Mac-Access. Anything Mac OS and iOS is on topic for this group. In the case of virtualisation applications such as Fusion and Parallels Desktop, the configuration of the applications themselves, plus the configuration of the virtual machines is on topic. However, the configuration of Windows or any other operating systems within that virtual machine is off topic. The exception to that is if you're using another instance of OSX within the virtual machine. This has always been a bit of a grey area; but we hope this clarifies the position. If you have any list-related queries, please do not hesitate to contact either Gordon and myself, (the list owners), at supp...@mac-access.net, or one of our very capable assistant list controllers; Anne Robertson, a...@anarchie.org.uk or James Austin, james.aus...@mac-access.net and we will be happy to help you. Once again, a very warm welcome to the group. We hope you find your membership an enjoyable experience. Finally, I would like to add that currently, we are offering all Mac-Access. members the opportunity to purchase the Take Control Of Your Mac publications, published by Tidbits.com, at an 80% discount. Re: WQuestion about 1 password on Lion
Hi Paul, I've been reading some of the feedback comments of users of 1Password under Lion, and there have been many people who have been asking for revisions. There seem to be a number of updates being distributed. The most recent official one is 1Password 3.7.1 posted yesterday. I think this is currently a bit of a moving target, and the conclusion that operations are more difficult under Lion is not a VoiceOver only complaint. So I don't think this has been discussed yet on list, and it certainly hasn't come to a resolution. HTH. Cheers, Esther On Aug 3, 2011, at 09:56, Paul Hopewell wrote: Hello, I believe some of you use 1 password on Lion. Crucial Website
Hi all Anybody managed to successfully navigate the crucial.com website using VO and Safari? I'm trying to buy some extra memory for one of our machines, (so I can't use their scanner). So I select my machine type and model. But from there nothing seems to happen when I click the memory adviser link. Thoughts? Re: iTunes behaves differently in Lion
Hi Kristeen and list, It's like swatting a fly with a hammer, but Lion installs with iTunes 10.3. Therefore you have the option of doing a clean reinstall of lion and decline the iTunes update.
