Apple mail question

2012-10-17 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am on the latest release of Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and use Apple mail to
monitor 6 accounts - 2 gmail, 1 hotmail, and the others old fashioned pop. Some
of the accounts are imap and the others are pop.

This all works fine except that for some reason Apple Mail keeps claiming that
I have 13 new items. None of my inboxes or my local folders have unread mail
and so I cannot understand why Apple Mail thinks I have these 13 new items. It
is a minor problem but I would like to track down the 13 new items and convert
them into old items.

Note that my Apple Mail has a long history with local folders and some of the
inboxes being migrated from Snow Leopard to the latest Mountain Lion as new
releases became available.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

Re: I need somebody who has experience with vm fusion 5 on a mac

2012-10-17 Thread Sean Murphy
Hello,

I live in both world's. Depending on which version of Windows 7 you are going
to use determines the amount of RAM. If you use the 32 bit then you only need 2
gb of RAM for the OS. If you are going to use 64 bit then you require 4 gb. So
you can get away with only 4gb on the Mac if you only use the Windows 7 32 bit.
Ideally it is best to have more then you require to prevent any performance
reduction on the Mac.

Installing the OS will have the same challenges if you do it on a native PC.
That is, you either do it via a script or have sighted assistance. What ever
screen reader you use will be done in the same fashion.

Caveats in relation to settings within VMWare:

1. There is an article in the archives that discusses about remapping keys
within the Mac and Windows. Edsharp is the app for windows to remap keys. The
reason for this is that the Mac does not have a insert key and you cannot use
the caps lock key while Voice over is on within Windows. Voice-Over doesn't
pass the key through.
2. Turn off all shortcut keys within the VMWare configuration.
3. Only use a 1 CPU. You do not get any advantage with more then 1.
4. Set up share and access your documents from the VMWare share. This allows
you to access them from windows or the Mac.
5. Install vmware tools in the guess OS.

Other then this, there is not much more to do.

Actually I compare d the links and the mac update site is correct. The dev
gave me a link that does lead to a 15 day trial that let's you broadcast 30
minutes at a time so you can get a feel of how the software works. unless he
took it down in the month since I contacted him and bought the program.

Yeah someone did mis info the thing. his trial did not cost anything. There are
some exceptions but this is not one of them. lol!

anyways email the dev if you want the link as I don't feel like getting in
trouble.

Take care and good luck.

Re: I need somebody who has experience with vm fusion 5 on a mac

2012-10-17 Thread Phil Halton
if you already have a windows7 bootcamp partition, and you then do a windows
easy install in VMWare, how does this affect the windows product key? That
is, the product key is already used to activate the bootcamp partition. Do I
also get to use the same product key to activate/validate the VMWare
installation? I know the product key is tied to the hardware, so maybe its
okay since its the same hardware?

And, is it more advantageous to simply point VMWare to the bootcamp? Would
it be redundant to have both bootcamp and the other?

Lots of questions.

I think what they mean is on a laptop keyboard you cannot modify the caps lock
key to work as an incert key in fusion for your guest OS what ever it might
be. hence you need a key remap software for your guest OS to remap another key
un my case the right cmd key.

Be blessed.

Re: DJay4 Mac

2012-10-17 Thread Gordon Smith
I think the only thing missing from this software is a VoiceOver mechanism. By
"VoiceOver", I am not referring to the Mac OS X or iOS "VoiceOver". A
"VoiceOver" is a term frequently used by broadcasters to represent such times
as when the presenter speaks over the top of intros, Outros or an appropriate
musical background.

When I say that, I mean a mechanism whereby the music playing at the time is
reduced by a percentage of the presenter's voice. For instance, if the
presenter is female and has a soft higher voice, the music would drop to a
certain level, so that her voice is clearly audible. If, however, the
presenter is mail and has a lower stronger voice, the music's reduction would
be different. You see what I mean? This kind of "VoiceOver" is a skill which
presenters learn over time. However, it can sometimes be better managed by
automation and actually I personally have used a lot of studios where this kind
of functionality is standard.

I need to write to the developer of this application actually, as I have a few
small suggestions but I also want to congratulate him on a very well-written
and functional application.

I said is track loging but if the dev can fix the pre queuing table I'll be
one happy camper when it comes to the nice piece of software. I might even use
some of the dsp effects I have on my system. Hey it works. lol!

I've seen some grate reviews of the app on the mac app store and I have to say
I agree with all of them. The dev really in my opinion outdid himself.

Hi Esther

As I understand it, Apple will not allow trials of applications in the App

apologies, all.

Hi All,

I've not been following the lengthy Djay4 Mac discussion, but I note that Chris
and Orin asked about a trial download, and Gordon replied that since it was
distributed through the Mac App Store there was no trial download. A Google
search brought up the link to an Algoriddim web page labeled "Download a free
15-day trial of djay", and the page URL is:
http://www.algoriddim.com/djay-mac/download

There's a note that "To fully activate the trial version and remove all
limitations" you should purchase djay from within the application or from the
Mac App Store. The MacUpdate site seems to imply that a demo version costs
$9.99, and points to the same versions of the djay download (4.0.6).

Make of this what you may.

2012-10-17 Thread Chris

No. There is some aronious information going on this thread.
1. All this talk about Edsharp. It's actually called Sharp Keys and
Google is your friend for this one for now.
2. We are talking CPU cores here, and not the actual CPU. Vmware Fusion
virtualizes everything, even Cpu cores.

3. You do not need Bootcamp to use Vmware Fusion.
4. There is no Windows for Mac.
Hope this helps.

There is no need to do another install of Windows. Just tell Fusion to use

if you already have a windows7 bootcamp partition, and you then do a windows

easy install in VMWare, how does this affect the windows product key? That
is, the product key is already used to activate the bootcamp partition. Do I

also get to use the same product key to activate/validate the VMWare
installation? I know the product key is tied to the hardware, so maybe its
okay since its the same hardware?

And, is it more advantageous to simply point VMWare to the bootcamp? Would
it be redundant to have both bootcamp and the other?
Lots of questions.

A little wasteful doing it that way though. Also, be mindful of the fact that
you may have problems with assistive accessibility tools which rely on video
drivers if you use a BootCamp partition with such a tool and want to do the
same under Fusion. I'm not naming tools, quite deliberately because not all of
them would have this problem.

you're referring to a process called ducking.
This where the effect you're speaking about happens.
it's also used when voice over artists record adds, jingles and promos, etc.

Re: a Zoom and Voiceover question.

2012-10-17 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Jim,

Interesting question. If I understand you correctly, you are wanting to hear VO
on your Mac speak the "zoom in" and "zoom out" levels, or to at least provide
some sort of vocal indication that something is happening when you are pressing
Command+Option+Plus or Minus, or that you've toggled zoom on or off, yes? I've
personally not found a way to make this happen on my MBA running the latest ML
version and would be interested to hear if anybody else has come up with a
solution for this.

Incidentally, now that it is theoretically possible to use both VO and Zoom
concurrently on an iDevice running IOS6, I gave it a try on my iPad 2 and
received the same silent treatment when using the three-finger zoom gestures
with VO turned on.

Hmm. Have you been in contact with the dev to maybe see if that can be done for
those of us who want it. When you're in dah club you don't need it, but if you

Re: I need somebody who has experience with vm fusion 5 on a mac

2012-10-17 Thread Phil Halton
Gordon, could you clarify what you mean by "assistive accessibility tools".
Are you refering to screen readers?
Also, I assume the wastage you speak of has to do with the disk space
utilized by the bootcamp and which would perhaps not be used by Fusion - is
that right?

I thought I understood that you could actually install the Guest OS via
Fusion and recover the space used by the bootcamp partition, effectively
removing bootcamp after importing it into Fusion. Does that sound about
right?

?

A little wasteful doing it that way though. Also, be mindful of the fact
that you may have problems with assistive accessibility tools which rely on
video drivers if you use a BootCamp partition with such a tool and want to
do the same under Fusion. I'm not naming tools, quite deliberately because
not all of them would have this problem.

Trial versions of apps [was Re: DJay4 Mac]

2012-10-17 Thread Esther
Hi Gordon,

You wrote:
> As I understand it, Apple will not allow trials of applications in the App

> humble apologies, all.

I think that the precise statement is that Apple does not allow for trial
versions of applications to appear in the Mac App Store, because it does not
allow developers to distribute apps that will suddenly stop working unless the
user pays more money at a later date in the app stores. Similarly, it does not
allow for special pricing for subsets of users. The dev can choose to lower the
price for everyone for a day or other extended period, and inform previous
customers on his mailing lists or on his web site that he is going to do so,
but he can't give different treatment to selected groups in ways that would
(possibly) allow a fair distribution system to be subverted.

But there's nothing to prevent a developer from offering trial versions of
software at his web site, or from running separate discount promotions or
bundle sales of the same app from his web site. That's one of the reasons I
check the MacUpdate site listing for most apps. Even though there are
occasional errors, they're usually pointed out in user comments, and links are
supplied to the developer's site so you can find more current information.
(Some developers' web sites aren't laid out as rationally as the MacUpdate
site, so I also appreciate the standard layout that is used.)

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: DJay4 Mac

2012-10-17 Thread Esther
Hi Gordon, Sarah, and Others,

I believe you can contact the developer of DJay4 through Twitter, using
@algoriddim as the contact address. The other way to give feedback is to join
the forums at their web site, and the forum leader is named Anders. This
information comes up from a Mail Archive search. There's a history of the
developers' responding to feedback about VoiceOver. Most of the accessibility
inputs (for both the Mac app, and then later for the iOS app releases for both
iPhone and iPad) started 3 years ago (in the previous version of DJay3), with
the efforts of Yuma Decaux.

She was active in contacting the developers for VoiceOver improvements, and
tested the iOS app versions on both iPhone and iPad. I'm passing on the contact
information she supplied.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: I need somebody who has experience with vm fusion 5 on a mac

2012-10-17 Thread Eric Caron
Chris and others,

One other correction. I'm using keyremap4macbook and PCKeyboardHack to remap
keys both on the apple side and in my VM Fusion machine. As a result I am
using the Caps lock key as the insert and thus using the insert as a screen
reader modifier.

This allows me to remap on the apple side of things, and I find this much
easier then working inside the VM. Thus I have no need of Sharp keys.

you know, some of you all who have a tun of experience with this vm fusion
stuff, really aught to write a blog post about it. I bet if we could get some
experienced people to make a check list so to speak for what people need to
know before installing, and during the process of using vm fusion it would help
a lot of us newbies out there. There is tuns of vm fusion stuff, but not much
out there having to do with how we, the blind/visually impaired, use this
program and the benefits/cons to it. Just saying, it should be a blog post or
something somewhere.

iPhone App Store - update

2012-10-17 Thread Glenn
Hi,
I have IOS 6 on my iPhone, and I'm sure most of us know that the app store
is a bit different now.
I get apps that can't update from time to time, even though I am connected
to my home WIFI.
Also, what is the
"down pointing triangle"?
But the apps that don't update also say
"installing dimmed".
Seems like I don't need to enter my password for updates, which makes sense.
Thanks for any feedback.
Glenn

Hello Glen:

When tapping on the down pointing triangle this is a description in what's new
in the update.

2012-10-17 Thread Sarah Alawami
The app store might look slightly different from when I did this but here you
go. This should explain all except the apps that are being stubborn. I have no
advice at the moment for you on that. sorry..

Enjoy.
